Pottery barn tray

Now that all signs of the holidays are gone, my house looks a bit bleak. So I moved a few things around and added some trinkets. What I really needed was a tray for the ottoman I made last year so that we would be able to place drinks on top. My friend kristin got an email saying that the William Sonoma outlet in Long Island was closing down, yipee!! We excitedly drove for over an hour to get there and to our startling surprise the store was completely empty. What a bummer! Thank goodness there was a Pottery Barn, it would have been a total waste of a long trip. I found the perfect tray, it was made with distressed wood and iron handles, perfect match with my desk in the livingroom. I grabbed it along with a few other tchotchkes and we headed to Homegoods for a little more shopping.

I filled a little urn with some corals and starfish

I bought a gorgeous white orchid to add to my pink orchid, they are my favorite flowers!

Accessorized the tray with my orchids and shells, I really like the way it looks…

Welcome Tasha!

Congratulations to my friends Kristin and her family on the new addition to their family! They had been waiting over a year for their adoption to go through. Her name is Tasha and she is one lucky girl… She has been adopted by the most wonderful family. Tasha is a beautiful eight week old German Shepherd that is going to be treated like a doggy princess. She is the cutest little puppy!!

So while I was visiting Tasha I couldn't help but notice some changes in Kristin's home, remember the post on Kristin's beautiful home.

Her tall glass vases filled with gorgeous sea glass... I've never seen so many handpicked sea glasses. That's a lot of walks on the beach!

She changed her diningroom table from round to rectangular for more seating. Still beautiful and more functional.

A driftwood garland placed on the table adds nice coastal flair.

Little puppy is pooped from all the excitement. She is soooo sweet!

Coquillage mirror in the making

One of my favorite things to make are shell mirrors… That being said, this is one of the mirrors I am working on lately. The shells that I use are the ones I have collected on the beach and shells I have ordered from all over the world.

This mirror is still incomplete, even though I have it hanging up. I needed to get it off my table for the holidays. I like the way it is manifesting so far… I want to add some more textural shells and finish off the edges.

How to make the Coqillage Mirror

I started with a 1/4" plywood, cut it to size using a jig saw. Painted the back and added hooks for a heavy duty cable wire to hang.

I added a beveled edged mirror to the front center with mirror glue (sorry I don't have pictures of that, but you get the idea). I wanted to have a focal point on the top, so I adhered bunch of coral around a beautiful large abalone shell. Then, continued to place different kinds of shells all around the mirror.

I have it temporarily displayed above my checkered cabinet along with my sea inspired arrangement.

I love living near the ocean and enjoying all the beauty it has to offer. I like taking walks to find treasures that has washed up like beautiful sea glass, driftwood, old pottery and of course beautiful seashells. Normally, it is freezing here at the New York beaches during this time of year, but it has been surprisingly mild… So we took advantage of the weather and took a walk on the beach to find some goodies and to have our doggy Ringo go for a run.

Found tons of oyster shells and quahog shells.. . I can't wait to make a oyster shell mirror!

Staircase makeover

My husband is a home improvement contractor and so I should have tons of how-to projects to show you. I always ask my dear, dear husband to take before and after pictures of his projects... But he always get so caught up that he forgets to take the before pictures and we are left with only after pictures. Case in point with this fabulous staircase makeover project which I don't have before pictures of to show you, so this is where our imagination comes in… Imagine the risers of this steps were so scuffed and damaged that the only thing was to do was to rip it out and replace with new wood risers, carpet it or tile it. The owners wanted something different, artistic and durable, so my husband suggested tiling the risers and staining the treads. They loved the idea!

First, he stained the treads in a dark stain, I love the combination!

He put a layer of thin set especially made for wood with a trowel on the risers, "buttered" the tiles and placed them on the risers. Accent tiles were placed to give it the artistic flair that the homeowners desired.

It looks beautiful!

We are counting down the hours till 2012 and I am still amazed at how fast this year went by. I hope to accomplish a lot more in the upcoming year than I did 2011… I am making my list of goals and hope to have everything checked off at the end of the year. One of my goals for next year is to make my Etsy shop grow. Another goal for next year is to learn how to be a more successful blogger. I could just keep going on and on with all the things I want accomplish next year, the truth is if I am successful with just one I will be happy! What would you like to accomplish next year? Do you have any New Year's resolutions? What ever it is, I hope you enjoy doing it!

Spectacular Christmas display for Juvenile diabetes Research Foundation

Each year our friend Joe Mure does an amazing display of lights and decorations around his home, it's called "The little north pole." He does this to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and is diligently working towards finding a cure for this terrible disease. Over the years he has raised over a million dollars for this cause and still continues. Starting the first weekend of November, Joe and his 40 or more friends install all the decorations and displays during the entire month. On the first Saturday of December, the street gets closed off from cars for the "lighting" of The Little North Pole. Our whole community looks forward to this event every year. He sets up a stage for the local school bands and dancers from the dance school to perform. There is also famous entertainers like Judy Torres from the 80's, "Chicken little" one of previous "American Idol" contestant and more. He even has Santa Clause and Mrs. Clause come on a fire engine ladder to give out toys to hundreds of children that come to join in the festivities. There is free food and games for everyone which are donated from caterers for the cause.

I hope everyone is enjoying this most wonderful time of the year. I finally got the kids together to take Christmas pictures at the beach this past weekend. Once I took the pictures I downloaded them onto snapfish, picked out the layout of the Christmas card and ordered them. I picked them at my local drugstore the next day… So simple!

Our Christmas tree and decorating the house finally was completed this weekend.

Here are some of my homemade oranments.

I handpainted this glass ornament with glass paint in a swirly design and glued rhinestones on them. They came out really cute!

I glued hydrangea flowers to a styrofoam ball and attached beads to the center of the flower.

Another styrofoam ball covered with lace trimming, very victorian!

My puppy Ringo exhausted watching us decorate! What a life!

Sunburst mirror made with seashells

I have always loved sunburst mirrors! So I was very exicted to make this one out of my favorite objects, SHELLS. I don't have step-by-step pictures of this project, because I was just making it to put in my
Etsy shop. It came out so pretty, I wanted to share it with you.

First, I adhered abalone shell shards to the perimeter a wooden circle form. Then placed all the tiny little pearlized umbonium shells all around the form, making sure to also put the shells on the inside edge. Lastly, I attached a round mirror I purchased at my local craft store with mirror glue.

Sandwich bag Christmas wreath

This the best time of the year for me. Everyone is just a little more joyous and kind. Every Christmas it brings me back to memories of Christmas past. I love the magic of Christmas!

This brings me to two past Christmases ago, when my daughter, at the time in third grade made this fabulous sandwich bag wreath in her class. I just had to share it with you!

Supplies needed

Wire hanger (preferably white)

Box of 50 Clear sandwich bags (without the zipper)

Red ribbon

Jingel bells

First, bend the wire hanger to form a round circle, the hanger hook is used to hang the wreath (how perfect). Take a sandwich bag and tie around the wire form, very close together. Tie bags all the way around and there it is! Just make a bow with the red ribbon and tie it to the wreath. Add the jingle bells and you are good to go! How simply beautiful!

Reupholstering dining chairs

I have been away from blogland for so long, I missed all the creative and inspirational people I visit everyday! I miss seeing all the great projects from all of you wonderful bloggers. I am so glad to be back and start doing some projects of my own. Enough of this laissez-faire lifestyle, I need to create!

I am going to start by reupholstering my dining room chair, it is long over due! I really don't like these chair at all and I would love to just say adios to them… but I can't do that till I can replace them with other chairs. Reupholstering the dining room chairs is the easiest and the least expensive way of refreshing the look of my dining room. New fabric on the chair seats will renew the look of the room and can be accomplished in only a few minutes.

This is the new look...

This the way they looked before, they were dirty dingy looking and ripped. They were quite embarassing!

I first unscrewed the seat from the base of the chair. Put the screws aside.

Cut fabric leaving about extra 4 inches around the seat. Turn over the seat so the bottom is facing up and make sure to align any pattern there may be (See what i mean by embarassing!).

Pull fabric tightly and put a few staples in. Take the fabric from the opposite side, pull tightly and staple. Do the same on the other two sides… Then staple generously around the seat leaving the corners.

At the corners neatly create a tri-fold with the fabric, pull taut and staple. You can cut off the extra fabric.

I secured the newly upholstered seat to the chair frame with the screws. Five more to go, I will show you all the completed dining chairs tomorrow.

This refreshening is just what these chairs needed. I really like the end results!

Powerful tools!

One of my favorite items to make for my etsy shop is my seashell encrusted letters. Usually, I purchase the 9" letters and embellish the letters with the shells. People really seem to love these shell letters, as do I. Last week I received an order for 18" seashell letters, so I figured no problem I will just order 18" wooden letters and I will embellish them. Well, it wasn't that easy because when I went searching online for these large letters, the prices were $215 per letter! This was almost three times more than what they were sold for and I still have to attach the shell on them. I had no choice but to cut these letters out myself with my husband's jig saw. Talk about a challenge, every few minutes I had to stop and check to see if all my fingers were still attached! Ha Ha! After some trials and errors, I got the hang of it and it wasn't so bad… Granted, this was not a 1-2-3 project, it took hours and hours to embellish the letters with tiny little shells. However, now I'm thinking of all kinds of new projects I could do with this new found tool. It's funny how life is, simple little things has the possiblility to open so many other doors. You gotta just do it!

First, I decided the dimensions of the letters and drew them on the wood.

Then, I used the jig saw to cut the letters out.

I spray painted them white...

Believe it or not, I spent two days attaching shells to the letters.

But, it was well worth it, I love the way they came out!

So, go on try something new! It may open a new door for you and you never know where it may lead!

Fabric indecisions… Resolved!

Remember this chair?

I forgot to mention in my last post that my husband didn't just find one white occasional chair, but two other regular white chairs in similar styles. I had them in my garage and thought of using them for a later project, and kind of forgot about them. As I was asking blogland for opinions on what fabric to choose from, I was also asking my family and friends. My sister (oh the brilliant one) remembered the other two similar chairs and suggested I use the muted fabric on the two smaller chairs and the bold and beautiful fabric on the occasional chair. I think my dilema has been resolved! I plan to refinish them and put them in my Etsy shop, so they don't have go with my home's color scheme. I can't start on these chairs for a few days, because I some orders to make for my etsy shop. But, I will show you the finished results hopefully at begining of next week.

So do you think I made the right decision? I would love to here from you...

Which fabric to choose...

My husband surprised me one day with this beautiful occasional chair he had found along the way. I absolutely love the cut outs on the backrest and its clean lines. It is a strong solid chair, it just needs a little TLC. I could strip it and stain it with a dark wood stain, but I really like the fresh crispy look of the white. I am going to lightly sand it, fill some areas with wood putty and spray paint it with Rustoleum white paint.
Now, my real dilemma is that I have two fabrics that I cannot decide on. One with bold and vibrant colors, a little risky. Another with more muted and safe colors. Which one to use? I am leaning more towards the bold colors, because I usually go with the more safer colors. But, I'm not quite sure which way I should go! So, I would really, really love your opinion…

D.I.Y. Bubble Chandelier

Here is a great DIY project from the Su Casa group owner of a boutique in Los Angeles. Instead of shelling out $3,000-$7,000 for a chandelier for her shop, she thought it would be rewarding to create their own chandelier for a fraction of the cost of a store bought chandelier.

         Casasugar Home

This supply list is for a chandelier measuring 2' X 4'.  They made it a substantial size because they needed to make a statement in their boutique.
Of course, you can create any size or shape you want.  
Supplies:
2'x4' white wire grid panel, though you can do any shape or size. About $15-$23.
CB2 Bubble Balls, 50 small & 40 large. $1.95 ea small, $3.95 ea large.
Silver Christmas ball ornaments, 80 small, 80 medium.
Fishing line. We bought high knot strength /30 lb.,  $3.
One spool of sterling silver wire, 20-22 gauge.  You can also do 22 gauge floral wire.
4 ceiling mounting hooks  
White chain, about 10 feet, cut evenly into 4 pieces. 
4 S-hooks 
2 white lamp cord kits from Urban Outfitters,  $12 ea.
2 half mirror light bulbs $9 ea
One 2" nail.
Pliers
One pair of wire cutters, or use scissors if you must.

See the little silver toggles on the table?  We tied fishing line into a knot around the toggle and slipped it into the opening on top of the CB2 ball . . . the other end of the fishing line was tied to the wire grid. Fastening the fishing line to the wire grid. We suspended the wire grid from the ceiling, and started tying our fishing line to it from there.  We made sure to place the wire grid under an existing ceiling electrical fixture so we could easily install the lighting.  We also made sure that we had enough chain length to raise and lower the grid as needed. Seeing the first bubble hanging was so much fun.

The first 60 glass balls have been hung . . . now onto the silver ball ornaments. (The light you see in the background is from another chandelier.)  Right around this step we added the 2 light fixtures. We hung the small silver ornaments right up against the wire grid so as to hide it.Ultimately, the entire top of the chandelier should be covered with silver balls so as to fully conceal the wire grid.  We actually placed some silver balls on top of the grid so as to hide it as best we could.   The finished product! If you look closely (above) you can see the silver balls lining the top of the chandelier along the wire grid.  You can also see the pink box cover that extends from the ceiling down to the chandelier itself (this picture was taken in the reflection of a large mirror).



Insert your 4 chandelier hooks into the ceiling and attach about 2-3 feet of your white chain to each (make sure it is secured in the ceiling so as to carry the weight of the chandelier!).  You need that extra amount of chain so that you can bring down the wire grid low enough to work on and install the lighting fixtures (and then raise up to the ceiling when you are done). Suspend the wire grid from the ceiling using your chains and s-hooks. 
At your work table, cut the silver wire into 2" pieces (your quantity depends on the number of glass balls you are using).  Loop each 2" piece once around a nail to create the toggle.  You can use pliers to adjust the size of the loop, particularly to make it small enough to fit inside the top of the glass bubble.
Cut a piece of fishing line a few feet long.  Knot one end to the silver toggle you just made.  Slip the toggle inside the top of the glass CB2 ball.  Then attach the other end of the fishing line to the wire grid.  Hang each glass ball at varying lengths.  We started from the center of the grid and worked our way out.
In the very center of the grid we added our 2 light sockets.  We wired both sockets close to the top of the grid and plugged in both cords to the ceiling fixture (or you can easily have an electrician wire the cords to a single ceiling outlet).  Plug in your Half Mirror Light Bulbs.
We added silver ball ornaments to the chandelier.  We hung these balls extremely close together near the top of the grid so as to completely conceal it (the grid shouldn't show when you're done).  For some of the balls we created toggles using our silver wire, and for some we simply used Christmas ornament hooks!  Make sure that for each ball you hang directly on the grid that you twist the wire together so the hooks will not fall off if the chandelier is ever shaken (we live in California, so it's a factor we need to consider!).
We ended up creating a cover around the top of the chandelier so as to conceal the chains holding it up as well as the sides of the wire grid.  We simply created a light-weight crate that could be hooked to the chains holding up the rest of the chandelier.  It was painted a pale pink to match the color of the walls in our store. Another option is to create a framework around the chandelier and cover it in a semi-sheer fabric so as to let the light shine through, much like a lamp shade.  If you hook the chandelier close enough to the ceiling, you don't need any cover. We simply have high ceilings in our store and wanted something to finish the look of the piece.
Such a great project, the chandelier is gorgeous!
