One of the most common questions we get on our website is related to marriage. Many young men and women are curious what life holds for them especially their love life. Marriage can be a big decision, and how your life partner will be will have a big impact on your life. Will your future husband be handsome, will he support your career? Is your future wife going to be pretty and will she be supportive of you? All these questions matter a lot.

Vedic Astrology has been used not only to answer above questions but also to check if a certain match is favorable or not. Many times quickly arranged marriages are decided in a hurry on in passion but they fail mainly because the kundli matching process was not completed. Even if someone does not believe in astrology, the process of matching kundlis gives an opportunity to pause and sit down with your elders and evaluate the compatibility of the prospective match in detail. This process of sitting down with your elders and with your family priest is very useful as the match gets blessed by everyone.

Seventh house in a birth chart represents partnerships in life of a person including marriage and love life. The planets present in that house, position of the lord of the seventh house and other planets aspecting the seventh house determine how good or bad the love life will be. Time of marriage and love affairs depend on the Dashas of these planets.

Apart from above mentioned factors, the position of Venus and Jupiter also play important role in this regard. Jupiter represents the Saubhagya or Suhag (husband) in the birth chart of a female. Similarly position of Venus represents wife in a man’s birth chart. Along with above considerations, one must always consider the effect of Navamansha and other charts along with the natal chart.

When analyzing compatibility between two persons, there is a unique system developed by Indian astrologers known as kundli matching point system, which compares the two individuals along eight different traits. They are given points based on how compatible these traits are and a maximum of 36 points can be achieved. The higher points a couple receives, the better chances of them being compatible.

Manglik is another term which is used frequently and unfortunately has been the cause of needless worry and panic. Many marriage- related talks have broken down over this issue when it could have been resolved very easily. A manglik person is someone whose seventh house is afflicted by Mars. Either the planet is present in that house or is aspecting that house. But many times this effect gets cancelled which astrologers fail to report due to ignorance or for their own gains. For example the effect gets cancelled if there is a similar condition present in the partners chart. Moreover, many times manglik issue can be easily resolved by performing some easy remedies and pujas. If you want to know if you are a manglik, or need remedies for the same, please click here.

Ultimately, a successful marriage depends on mutual trust respect and understanding. Like anything else you must work hard to develop a good relationship and a good marriage. All the best and may God bless you!
Vastu Shastra is the ancient Indian science of constructing and decorating homes, working places, offices, temples etc. that swirl with good energy by making full and proper use of natural and positive energies which comes from space and under the Earth. Vastu is complitely different from the modern age architecture. It depends on us, how we make optimum use of the available resources and environment that supports physical and spiritual, health and prosperity into our family and our society.

Vastu Shastra evolved during Vedic times in India. According to Hindu mythology, "Vastu Purush" was born from the sweat of Lord Shiva. He then received the blessings of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva :

“If ever anyone creates a shelter or a work place then he has to take care of Vastu concepts. If a person ignores them and creates a wrong structure, then he will be afflicted by the anger of Vastu Purusha as he is blessed with.”

Artificial lakes, geometric courtyards, bore wells, gardens of the ancient times thirstily absorbed positive energy. Because they were constructed using the basics of the "Vastu".

The origin of Vastu shastra may have taken place well over thousands of years ago. The Great Yogis and Maharshis of ancient India may not have lived in houses themselves but they most definitely dedicated their lives in research to create a great science for making our lives better and more productive each day. The principles of the Vastu are basically based purely on the effect of Sun rays and cosmic energies we encounter during different times of the day.

Vastu is a part of Vedas, which are believed to be four to five thousand years old. Our ancient Maharshies who had the capacity to see the mantras in the sky with naked eyes from the cosmic mind and created Vedas by the grace of God and their meditation and super spiritual powers. Hence, Vedas are heeded with divine knowledge. The art of Vastu originates in the Rig Veda and Stapatya Veda, a part of Atharva Veda.

Even if you have constructed your house or workplace, and cannot make structural changes, even minor changes in arrangement can greatly increase the harmony and productivity of an area. Several other solutions to Vastu defects exist which can be easily put into use.

These are the results which a person may expect when Shani is transiting the Lagna (Ascendant) in the horoscope:

1. It causes hard work, knowingly or unknowingly.

2. Gains are lesser than normal.

3. More struggles and trials.

4. It causes a person to be emotionally strong by doing away with dependencies. One cannot expect a free meal in this period.

5. It causes a person to become reserved, and raises self- independence and self-confidence.

6. Promotes planning for new projects and new developments.

Struggles and trials in a person's life is directly related to the position and lordship of Shani in his or her horoscope. Whether the effects of Shani will be good or bad, these are written down in the birth chart.

When a person feels restless and anxious, then it naturally means that that person's job in this world is not yet over. There is no fulfillment in life so that person will need to make appropriate changes and perform hard work to achieve it.

When someone feels lonely, then he moves away from outer world and searches for a world inside himself or herself. And this is how that person's spiritual journey begins, to find the meaning of life in this lonely world. Ideas and spirituality start coming out from within.

Actually, Saturn only acts as a mirror. It does not cause any bad or good deeds by itself. Saturn will make you think about yourself and who you are. Initially, you may not like what you see in that mirror. But Saturn will make you face the reality, it may cause some trouble initially but this is where the true mettle of a person comes forth. It tests you by taking away things you have taken for granted and makes you work for them.

Towards the end, when Saturn is going away it will give back everything it had taken but it also gives you the most valuable gift - self confidence and a foundation for self development. Hence, a period of Saturn may be full of struggles but it is absolutely essential for the development of a better and beautiful tomorrow.
In the first article in the series we learned about the planet Saturn, it's science and it's mythology. Now let's focus on the planet from an astrological point of view.

Shani is the most infamous planet in Astrology. The name itself strikes such fear in the minds of people that they panic or get severely depressed, which may be misused by some unscrupulous folks. But is it the truth? It is logical that no planet by itself is good or bad!

People think Saturn always brings hardship and failure, which is far from the truth. Actually, Shani is known as the "judge" among all the planets. It will give you results based exactly on your past karma. If you have performed good karma, it will give you good results, otherwise not. Only if you have put in proper amount of effort, will you succeed.

Nature and Characteristics of Shani

Shani by nature is a perfectionist, a builder. Shani is strict and likes those who follow his "rules". Shani likes to test a persons courage by making them come face to face with realities of life. Shani is a sage, a philosopher, a devotee of Shiva, and a deep thinker. Shani is not materialistic. A person under the influence of Shani will be driven away from materialistic things and towards philosophy and spirituality. It will make the person hardworking, disciplined, persistent, responsible and emotionally strong.

Shani is the lord of two zodiac signs - Makar (Capricorn) and Kumbh (Aquarius). Shani transits around the full zodiac in approximately 30 years. So, it remains approximately 2.5 years in a single sign. When Shani transits through a sign, it brings new changes and discards all old and rudimentary ideas and starts a new chapter in the person's life.

Transit of Shani in Ascendant (First House)

One of our readers asked a question about Shani's effect when it transits the Ascendant. Ascendant is located in the First house (Pratham Bhava) of a horoscope.

So, what does the first house represent? It represents the personality, health, appearance and character of a person. Hence, when Shani transits through first house, a person will get affected in above matters.

According to Vedic Astrology, Saturn aspects three houses - third, seventh and tenth house from the house it occupies. That means, Shani will also affect these three houses apart from the first house when it is transiting through the first house. Here is what the three houses represent:

Third House - Courage, Neighbours, Communication, Neck, Throat, Younger siblings

Seventh House - Spouse, Travel, Foreign trip, Partnership

Tenth House - Profession, Business

So these aspects will also get affected when Saturn transits the first house, but not necessarily in a negative way. The nature of effect totally depends on horoscope of a person. Specifically:

1. Lagna (ascendant) of the birth chart
2. Location of Saturn in the birth chart and it's lordship
3. Effects of dashas (periods)
4. "Power" in the horoscope - If a birth chart is powerful, a person may withstand really bad times and still come out on top.

In the next article in this series, we will tell you some examples of how Shani effects these aspects and how to remedy the bad influence.

ABOUT SHANI (SATURN)

Saturn, or Shani in Hindi, is a planet which is feared by many people. Sade Sati is the most common concern among people, but it is also the least understood. One of our readers asked us a question about the effects of Shani in Lagna (Ascendant) of a birth chart. For the benefit of our other readers, we decided to analyze it in detail and present an article for your benefit.

To understand the effects of Saturn, let us get some background on Saturn. Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and is second largest planet in the solar system, Jupiter being the largest. Saturn is composed of all gas without any solid surface. It is a very cold planet, with temperature going down to -150 degree Celsius. Saturn has 62 moons discovered so far and it's nine rings are composed on ice and dust particles.

The atmosphere of Saturn is composed of 96% Hydrogen and 4% Helium. There planet is composed of ammonia crystals and ammonium hydroxide. The core is composed of other heavier elements. With the abundance of gas, this planet is known as GAS GIANT.As mentioned in the shloka, Shani travels slowly, and completed one revelution around the Sun in 29 Earth years. But it completed one rotation on it's axis in only 9 Earth hours.

IN HINDU MYTHOLOGY

According to Hindu Puranas (scriptures), Shani is considered to be a son of Surya (Sun) and Chhaya (shadow). His brother is Yamaraj and sister is Yamuna. His color is considered to be same as an Indraneel Mani, also known as Neelam (Blue Sapphire).

The wife of Saturn is Param Tejasvi and one day she went to him to request a son. But Shani Dev was busy meditating and praying to Lord Krishna. After waiting a long time, his wife got agitated and cursed Shani that wherever, and whoever he sees will get destroyed. This causes Shani to keep his head down all the time.

SHANI IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY

This is the mythology behind the harmful drishti (aspect) of Shani. According to Vedic Astrology, Saturn is beneficial in the house it occupies, but harmful to the houses which it aspects. Shani aspects 3rd, 7th and 10th house from the one it occupies.

Shani hates actions such as fraud, deceit, telling lies, consuming alcohol, gambling, staying unclean, animal cruelty, and disrespect of God, parents or elders.

If Shani occupies a favorable position in a birth chart then that person progresses in several aspects of life. That person is hardworking, fair in dealings and justice-loving. His/her social standing is also very good and that person does not suffer from any major ailments. On the other hand, if Shani is not positioned well in a chart, then damage to the house, fires, debt, disputes and loss of wealth and property will occur. Eearly defects in teeth and eyes are also the effects of bad Shani positioning.

Shani Jayanti (birthday of Lord Saturn) is Wednesday, June 1 of this year as per Hindu Panchang. This occasion falls on Amavasya (new moon) of Baisakh month every year. That is why it is also known as "Shani Amavasya". It is a very important festival and several rituals and prayers are performed which can be very beneficial to humans. Please read on to learn these rituals.

1. Visit a temple where you can find Shani Dev or Navgrah (nine planets). Pray to Shani Dev by performing "Abhishek" with oil.

2. Donate clothes and shoes.

5. Wear a ring on your middle finger made out of a horse shoe. The horse should be black. It is commonly available in grocery stores in India.

6. Fix a horse shoe on your main door. Again, make sure the shoe is taken from a black horse.

7. Chant these mantras and meditate - "Ohm Shan Shanaishcharay Namah" and "Ohm Pram Preem Praum Sah Shanaishcharay Namah"

Panchak is the period of five days in each month when Moon transits through Aquarius (Kumbh) and Pisces (Meen). During this period no auspicious deeds are recommended.

The period is named "Panchak" because during this time Moon transits through five constellations:

1. Dhanishta (last leg)

What not to do in Panchak?

Any auspicious or inauspicious deed is prohibited in this period of five days. Well, the latter is prohibited everyday!

Five specific deeds are especially prohibited. They are:

1. Marriage

2. Cremation of dead body

What happens when you perform the prohibited tasks during Panchak?

Everything in Panchak is connected to number 5. So, if you perform a prohibited task during Panchak, you will have to repeat it 5 times! So best that one avoids them.

What can you do in Panchak?

You can perform your daily tasks which carry you through the day. You can of course pray, perform puja and religious rights.

When is the next Panchak? How will I know about it ahead of time?

May 24 - 29, 2011

June 20 - 25, 2011

July 17 - 22, 2011

August 14 - 19, 2011

Panchak start and end at specific times, depending on your location. Submit you email here, and we will remind you in advance with start and end times.

Indian calendar, more specifically, Hindu calendar is known as Panchang. Like any society, Hindu calendar is the backbone of Indian culture. All our festivals, fasts and muhurats (auspicious dates) are determined by Panchang. It is also known as Panchangam in South India, but follows the same timelime.

But Panchaang is much more than a calendar, it is a record of all planetary positions, not only of the past but accurately calculated positions in the future. This makes Panchang an indispensable tool in Jyotish, the Indian branch of Astrology. These planetary positions are used to develop a Kundali (Indian Birthchart). Panchang gives direction to us on which field of work to choose and the most appropriate time for it.

<ins style="border: medium none; display: inline-table; height: 15px; margin: 0pt; padding: 0pt; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 468px;"></ins>
<ins id="aswift_7_anchor" style="border: medium none; display: block; height: 15px; margin: 0pt; padding: 0pt; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 468px;"></ins>

The literal meaning of Panchang is "something which has 5 parts. These five parts are:

Tithi

Vaar

Nakshatra

Yoga

Karan

These five characteristic define each day.

Tithi

Tithi is the date which is calculated by measuring the difference between Moon and the Sun. One tithi is defined as the time it takes for Sun and Moon to travel 12 degrees relative to each other. Hence, each tithi is composed of 12 degrees.

Each maas, or month has 30 tithis. The month itself is divided into 2 Pakshas (Krishna and Shukla) of 15 tithis each. Amavasya (New moon) falls on Krishna paksha while Purnima (Full moon) falls on Shukla Paksha.

Vaar

Vaar, as most of us know, is the day of the week. Like many other calendars, there are 7 days in a week in Hindu calendar as well. They are - Ravivaar (Sunday), Somvaar (Monday), Mangalvaar (Tuesday), Guruvaar (Thursday), Shukravaar (Friday) and Shanivaar (Saturday).

More on Panchang in next part.

We were discussing about the Hindu calendar, Panchaang. We had already covered the importance and meaning of Panchang. We had also discussed two out of the five parts which define Panchangam - Vaar and Tithi. Please read that article below.

Now let us look at the remaining three parts of a Panchang - Nakshatra, Yog and Karan.

Nakshatra

This part of Panchanga defines the position of the Moon. It tells us which constellation Moon is travelling in, on that day. One Naksatra occupies 13 degrees and 20 minutes in the sky. So, the total 360 degrees of the sky has 27 Nakshatras.

Yog

Yog tells us the angular relationship between Sun and Moon. But unlike tithi, which is the longitudinal difference between Sun and Moon, yog is the longitudinal sum of their positions. There are 27 yogas and each have a specific nature which provides unfavorable or favorable conditions for certain matters.

Karan

Defines half of a tithi. There are hence two karans in each tithi.

Apart from above information, a Panchang also conveys the transit of planets. Transit is the current positions of planets in space.

All this information is calculated using a highly advanced mathematical approach. This makes Indian calendar, Panchang, a highly sophisticated almanac of dates, times and planetary positions. All this information is used to determine things like auspicious muhurats, suitability of the day for people and for a specific area of activity. Hence, in depth knowledge of Panchanga is essential for understanding and practicing Astrology.

In the month of Baisakh, in Shukla paksh,on the third tithi falls the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya. According to Hindu texts, any good karma accumulated on this day gives Akshay (indestructible) result.

Although Shukla Paksh Tritiyas of all twelve months are auspicious but the one falling in Baisakh month is the most auspicious of them all. According to Bhavishya Puran, Satyug started on this tithi itself. Lord Vishnu took the avtar (incarnation)of Nar-Narayan, Parshu Ram and Hayagriva on this day itself.

On this day, Badri Nath and Shri Lakshmi Narayan are worshipped. In the famous holy place of Badri Nath, the gates are open throughout the day. In Banke Bihari Temple at Vrinadavan, you can take darshan of Shri Vigrah. And Dwapar Yug was also supposed to have ended on Akshaya Tritiya as well. Hence, any good deeds performed on this day are never destroyed.

It is believed that on this day, you can perform all tasks without worrying about the Muhurat. tasks like, wedding, house-warming, buying property, vehicles, jewellry, etc. Taking a dip in River Ganges on this day washes away all the sins. If this occasion falls on a Monday and in Rohini Nakshatra, then this occasion becomes doubly auspicious. This tithi is auspicious from Madhyanh till Pradosh.

On this day, one should get up early and pray to Lord Vishnu and have Chana Dal and cucumber in breakfast. One should perform charity and pray for forgiveness for all the sins of self and the family.

On this day, spring season ends and it's the start of summer season. That is why, it is a tradition to donate pot full of water and handheld fans. It is believed that whatever one donates on this day, one shall receive the same things in next life.

There are many stories related to Akshaya Tritiya. One of them is that a Vaishya (trader) performed some charity on this auspicious day and in his next birth became a great king of Kushawati. And in his subsequently was born as Chandragupta Maurya.

Also, this is one of the greatest religious festivals in Jain religion. Aadinathji broke his year long fast on this day itself by having sugarcane juice. People who observe alternative days of fasting end their fast on Akshaya Tritiya. Jainis celebrate this day in huge numbers. In huge gathering they take oath of forgiveness, non-violence and charity.

This occasion is also celebrated greatly in Bundelkhand, Maalva, and in Rajasthan with various rituals and customs.
This was carried out by the Gods on one side and the Demons on the other side. They combined their forces for a common goal - to unearth the greatest and most precious treasures from the depths of the ocean. The greatest of the great treasure of them all was - the Amrit kumbha (pot of immortality nectar). Both Demons and Gods wanted amrit which will make them immortal and hence invincible. A great battle ensued, and spread to the four big cities. These cities were Naasik, Ujjain, Haridwar and Prayag.

Even to this day, this epic battle is remembered in the form of the Kumbh festival. Astrology suggests follwing schedule of taking a bath and getting blessed during this holy festival:

1. When Jupiter is in Aquarius (Kumbh) and Sun is in Aries (Mesh) - Bathe in Ganga river in Haridwar

2. When Jupiter is in Leo (Sinh) and Sun is in Aries (Mesh) - Bathe in Shipra river in Ujjain
3. When Jupiter and Sun both in Leo (Sinh) - Bathe in Godavari river in Naasik

4. When Jupiter is in Taurus (Vrish) and Sun is in Capricorn (Makar) - Bathe at the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna rivers in Prayag

Taking a bath at these places during this festival will wash away all your sins.
Cow has a special place in Hindu religion. She is considered to be in the same level as gods and demigods. Hindu texts say that all 33 crore demigods (devtas) reside in her body. What this actually means is that cow gives out a high amount of positive energy which can be compared to all 33 crore devatas combined!

And why not? Each and every part of gau mata is so useful to us. Her milk is nutritious, the milk products such as butter and ghee delicious, especially for kids who need all the protein, iron and calcium while growing up! Lord Krishna's love of milk and his antics to get to his beloved treat of makhhan (butter) are well documented! Even cow's waste products are useful. Cow-urine is known to have antibacterial and antiseptic properties. And cow dung is used as a fuel and as manure to increase land fertility. Cow is truly a survival kit in herself. No wonder she was, and still is, so revered by Hindus. In fact, even coming close to her shadow is said to take a man's pains and troubles away. It has been a provider to humans in every way.

So how can we use all this positive energy that this benign animal has to offer? By respecting and caring for her. One should try to serve her and be in her close proximity. One should choose to protect her and if possible raise a few cows in their backyard or farmhouses. She will give you a thousand times more than what you invest in serving her.

Immortals in Hindu Mythology !

Some of them have this immortality as a blessing, while others are cursed and cannot find the peace that death brings. And then there are others who are here to protect the mankind and their devotees. But each of them have special powers which can be harnessed for our benefit.

So, how can we utilize their powers? By following this simple ritual. Each year, on your birthday, take out some time to remember these great immortals and seek their blessings. Earthlings are blessed with the holy occasion of Somvati Amavasya when an Amavasya (new moon) falls on a Somvaar (Monday). Hence, it is called Somvati Amavasya. It is a very rare occasion, in fact, it is so rare that Pandavas kept waiting for a Somvati Amavasya in their lifetime, but it didn't happen even once. This occasion is very holy according to Hindu texts.

Amavasya (New moon) occurs when Moon is positioned between Earth and the Sun. This raises the importance of Moon as it comes in between Earth (us) and the Sun. So, it doubles the effect because Monday is already a day of Moon. And Moon being especially dear to Shivji, residing on his forehead, Somvati Amavasya becomes a once in a lifetime opportunity to get the blessings of Bhole Shankar (Lord Shiva).

So, on this day, get up early morning and take a dip, if possible in River Ganges, or a nearby river or stream. Get blessings of Shivji, Parvati and Tulsi. This day is also good for giving away food, clothes and cow for charity. Also worship a Sacred Fig (Peepal) tree on this day and try to do parikrama (circling) of the tree 108 times.

This special occasion is very beneficial for folks who are praying for kids, wealth, long life and to get rid of debt. To increase the benefits you can also fast on this day and pray for your wishes to come true!

Secret behind making your each day succesful!

Every morning when you get up, sit up on your bed and put your palms up to your face. Now place them together so as to make a "half moon" using the heart lines of your two palms. Now recite the following shloka as you look at your palms:

Karagre basati lakshmi, karmoolay saraswati
Karmadhye tu govinda, prabhate kar darshanam

This means that all three - Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati and Lord Vishnu reside right here on your palms. Every morning you should get their blessings. By doing this, remind yourself every morning that you have all the power in the world right in your hands and you are the only one who make things happen. Do not be dependent even on God, if you have to do something, do it yourself.

Now, put your palms on your face and pray to the four mothers: own mother, gau mata (cow), ganga mata (river ganges) and dharti mata (mother earth). Make it a daily routine and you are bound to see the positive effect of this ritual in your life.
