“What was he like?”Jack Kennedy said the reason people
read biography is to answer that basic question. With the verve of a
novelist, Chris Matthews gives us just that. We see this most beloved
president in the company of friends. We see and feel him close-up,
having fun and giving off that restlessness of his. We watch him
navigate his life from privileged, rebellious youth to gutsy American
president. We witness his bravery in war and selfless rescue of his PT
boat crew. We watch JFK as a young politician learning to play hardball
and watch him grow into the leader who averts a nuclear war. What was he
like, this person whose own wife called him “that elusive, unforgettable
man”? The Jack Kennedy you discover here wanted never to be alone,
never to be bored. He loved courage, hated war, lived each day as if it
were his last.Chris Matthews’s extraordinary biography is based on
personal interviews with those closest to JFK, oral histories by top
political aide Kenneth O’Donnell and others, documents from his years as
a student at Choate, and notes from Jacqueline Kennedy’s first
interview after Dallas. You’ll learn the origins of his inaugural call
to “Ask what you can do for your country.” You’ll discover his role in
the genesis of the Peace Corps, his stand on civil rights, his push to
put a man on the moon, his ban on nuclear arms testing. You’ll get, more
than ever before, to the root of the man, including the unsettling
aspects of his personal life. As Matthews writes, “I found a fighting
prince never free of pain, never far from trouble, never accepting the
world he found, never wanting to be his father’s son. He was a far
greater hero than he ever wished us to know.”

Uncover
humans' impact on the Earth's atmosphere, land masses, and water
bodies, and the impact of solid and hazardous wastes

Learn the truth about the greenhouse effect, global warming, and weather cycles

Discover amazing ecosystems and biodiversity, erosion and desertification

Learn about the hydrologic cycle, oceans, glaciers, and water pollution and treatment

When you loved the one who was killing you, it left you no
options. How could you run, how could you fight, when doing so would
hurt that beloved one? If your life was all you had to give, how could
you not give it? If it was someone you truly loved?
To be irrevocably in love with a vampire is both fantasy and nightmare
woven into a dangerously heightened reality for Bella Swan. Pulled in
one direction by her intense passion for Edward Cullen, and in another
by her profound connection to werewolf Jacob Black, a tumultuous year of
temptation, loss, and strife have led her to the ultimate turning
point. Her imminent choice to either join the dark but seductive world
of immortals or to pursue a fully human life has become the thread from
which the fates of two tribes hangs.

Now that Bella has made her
decision, a startling chain of unprecedented events is about to unfold
with potentially devastating, and unfathomable, consequences. Just when
the frayed strands of Bella's life-first discovered in Twilight, then scattered and torn in New Moon and Eclipse-seem ready to heal and knit together, could they be destroyed... forever?

The astonishing, breathlessly anticipated conclusion to the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn illuminates the secrets and mysteries of this spellbinding romantic epic that has entranced millions.
Longing, book three in the Bailey Flanigan Series, picks up where
Learning ended. After a long and lonely silence from Cody Coleman,
Bailey Flanigan becomes closer to her one-time Hollywood co-star,
Brandon Paul. Nights on the town in New York City and long talks on the
balcony of Brandon's Malibu Beach home make Bailey dizzy with new
feelings and cause her to wonder if her days with Cody are over forever.
Meanwhile, Cody's work coaching a small-town football team has
brought him and his players national attention. In the midst of the
celebration and success, Cody finds himself much closer to a woman who
seems to better understand him and his new life. Even so, never does
much time go by without Bailey and Cody experiencing deep feelings of
longing for each other, longing both for the past and for answers before
they can move forward. Will an unexpected loss be the turning point
for Cody? Will Cody and Bailey find a way back together again for the
first time in more than a year? And if they do, will their brief time
together be enough to help them remember all they've been longing for?

The World's Must-See Places takes
you on a tour of more than 100 of the world's greatest sights. In true
DK Eyewitness Travel Guide style, each page of the book will show you
what other books only tell you, with unique 3-D cutaway artwork that
lets you look inside each building as if you were there.
Ancient,
classical, and modern sights from every continent are included. Each
featured sight has been selected for its uniqueness, or its historical
or architectural importance, and many are included on UNESCO's list of
World Heritage Sites. The sights include iconic landmarks, such as
Chartres Cathedral and Sydney Opera House, and lesser-known gems,
including the Kairouan Mosque in Tunisia and the Toshu-gu Shrine in
Japan.
In addition to engaging text that describes each sight,
sidebars and text panels cover topics such as the architectural style of
the building, the architect and his works, or historic events or people
that shaped the building as we know it today.
This book not only
inspires readers to visit featured sights, but will also dazzle
armchair travelers who prefer to explore these cultural wonders from the
comfort of their own homes.

In the aftermath of a colossal battle, the future of the Seven Kingdoms
hangs in the balance once again--beset by newly emerging threats from
every direction. In the east, Daenerys Targaryen, the last scion of
House Targaryen, rules with her three dragons as queen of a city built
on dust and death. But Daenerys has three times three thousand enemies,
and many have set out to find her. Yet, as they gather, one young man
embarks upon his own quest for the queen, with an entirely different
goal in mind.

To the north lies the mammoth Wall of ice and
stone--a structure only as strong as those guarding it. There, Jon Snow,
998th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, will face his greatest
challenge yet. For he has powerful foes not only within the Watch but
also beyond, in the land of the creatures of ice.

And from all
corners, bitter conflicts soon reignite, intimate betrayals are
perpetrated, and a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and
skinchangers, nobles and slaves, will face seemingly insurmountable
obstacles. Some will fail, others will grow in the strength of darkness.
But in a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics
will lead inevitably to the greatest dance of all. . . .

Dubbed “the American Tolkien” by Time magazine, George R. R. Martin has earned international acclaim for his monumental cycle of epic fantasy. Now the #1 New York Times
bestselling author delivers the fifth book in his spellbinding landmark
series--as both familiar faces and surprising new forces vie for a
foothold in a fragmented empire.
From one of our most powerful writers, a work of stunning frankness
about losing a daughter. Richly textured with bits of her own childhood
and married life with her husband, John Gregory Dunne, and daughter,
Quintana Roo, this new book by Joan Didion examines her thoughts, fears,
and doubts regarding having children, illness, and growing old.

Blue Nights opens on July 26, 2010, as Didion thinks back to Quintana’s wedding in New York seven years before. Today would be her wedding anniversary.
This fact triggers vivid snapshots of Quintana’s childhood—in Malibu,
in Brentwood, at school in Holmby Hills. Reflecting on her daughter but
also on her role as a parent, Didion asks the candid questions any
parent might about how she feels she failed either because cues were not
taken or perhaps displaced. “How could I have missed what was clearly
there to be seen?” Finally, perhaps we all remain unknown to each other.
Seamlessly woven in are incidents Didion sees as underscoring her own
age, something she finds hard to acknowledge, much less accept.

Blue Nights—the
long, light evening hours that signal the summer solstice, “the
opposite of the dying of the brightness, but also its warning”—like The Year of Magical Thinking before it, is an iconic book of incisive and electric honesty, haunting and profoundly moving.
Google’s Android operating system is amazing in the breadth of what it
can do, and the many ways it can be implemented on smartphones. That
also means that there may be many powerful features that you haven’t yet
discovered, and a bit of confusion as to why your phone doesn’t look
like the phones you see in other people’s hands.

That’s why The
Complete Android Guide was created. It’s a comprehensive run-down of
everything your phone can do, written from the perspective of the
curious user. With screenshots, step-by-step instructions, and
explanations of how everything fits together in plain English, new
Android users will unlock their phone’s potential, and journeyman ‘droid
fans will pick up some new tricks.

As Android changes and
updates, so does this guide. The Complete Android Guide is updated as
soon as possible after new Android versions arrive on phones and
tablets, and major variations are covered, like Motorola’s Motoblur and
HTC’s Sense UI. When new, cool apps come out, we include them in the
extended features. You’ve got a 21st century phone, and a how-to guide
should at least try to keep up.

Windows PowerShell transformed the way
administrators and developers interact with Windows, allowing them to
script administrative tasks and control Windows from the command line.
It's now a daily timesaver for anyone working with Windows Server,
Exchange Server, SQL Server, and other mission-critical tools.

Windows PowerShell in Action, Second Edition
shows how to build scripts and utilities to automate system tasks or
create powerful system management tools to handle the day-to-day tasks
that drive a Windows administrator's life. This updated edition covers
PowerShell V2 in detail, with full chapters on remoting, modules,
events, and the PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment.

While no prior knowledge of PowerShell is required, the reader should have some amount of scripting or programming experience.

The people of Cedar Cove know how to celebrate Christmas. Like Grace and Olivia and everyone else, Beth Morehouse expects this
Christmas to be one of her best. Her small Christmas-tree farm is
prospering, her daughters and her dogs are happy and well, and her new
relationship with local vet Ted Reynolds is showing plenty of romantic
promise.

But…someone recently left a basket filled with puppies
on her doorstep, puppies she's determined to place in good homes.
That's complication number one. And number two is that her daughters
Bailey and Sophie have invited their dad, Beth's ex-husband, Kent, to
Cedar Cove for Christmas. The girls have visions of a mom-and-dad
reunion dancing in their heads.
As always in life—and in Cedar
Cove—there are surprises, too. More than one family's going to have a
puppy under the tree. More than one scheme will go awry. And more than
one romance will have a happy ending!
Review:

I am a senior engineer for network security operations. I read "Hacking
Linux Exposed" (HLE) to learn how adversaries compromise Linux hosts.
HLE impressed me at every level. I highly recommend system
administrators and security personnel read and heed this book's
recommendations.

The "Hacking Exposed" series is known for its unique
example-driven style. Rather than telling the reader about a technique
or problem, the authors demonstrate the issue using command-line
examples. I find myself reading with book and laptop at hand, ready to
duplicate the authors' sample commands. This process reinforces the
authors' message, while the reader learns if a specific problem applies
to his situation. Furthermore, by showing exactly how to execute certain
commands, the authors impart bits of wisdom and trickery not found
elsewhere.
For example, chapter 11 describes attacks and defenses
for FTP servers. To explain active and passive FTP sessions, the authors
demonstrate running an FTP client with the -d switch to illustrate raw
instructions sent by the client over the FTP command channel. I had
never seen this switch in use, but as an intrusion detector I constantly
see raw FTP instructions like those revealed by the -d switch. These
and other tidbits, like using the chattr -i command or setting the
"sticky bit", make HLE exceptional.
Beyond these benefits, readers
will enjoy clear, thorough explanations of Linux security issues. HLE
gives first-rate descriptions of ssh and web man-in-the-middle attacks,
race conditions, and FTP data hijacking. HLE also provides great
illustrated examples of FTP bounce attacks, giving intrusion detectors
the minutiae we need to recognize these techniques. I had heard of most
of the compromise methods offered by HLE, but never seen them discussed
in such practical detail.
If the material in chapters 1-13 of HLE
don't prompt you to verify your Linux host's integrity, then the case
studies in appendix D will. The security community needs more of these
narratives. These stories, based on true events, show the lengths to
which some attacks will go to penetrate target machines.
"Hacking
Linux Exposed" is another strong addition to the "Hacking Exposed"
series, and the security community will benefit as a result.

President Bill Clinton gives us his views on the challenges facing the
United States today and why government matters—presenting his ideas on
restoring economic growth, job creation, financial responsibility,
resolving the mortgage crisis, and pursuing a strategy to get us "back
in the future business.” He explains how we got into the current
economic crisis, and offers specific recommendations on how we can put
people back to work, increase bank lending and corporate investment,
double our exports, restore our manufacturing base, and create new
businesses. He supports President Obama’s emphasis on green technology,
saying that changing the way we produce and consume energy is the
strategy most likely to spark a fast-growing economy while enhancing our
national security.

Clinton also stresses that we need a strong
private sector and a smart government working together to restore
prosperity and progress, demonstrating that whenever we’ve given in to
the temptation to blame government for all our problems, we’ve lost our
ability to produce sustained economic growth and shared prosperity.

Clinton
writes, “There is simply no evidence that we can succeed in the
twenty-first century with an antigovernment strategy,” based on “a
philosophy grounded in ‘you’re on your own’ rather than ‘we’re all in
this together.’ ” He believes that conflict between government and the
private sector has proved to be good politics but has produced bad
policies, giving us a weak economy with not enough jobs, growing income
inequality and poverty, and a decline in our competitive position. In
the real world, cooperation works much better than conflict, and
“Americans need victories in real life.”

This is the first comprehensive guide to
cover JSP 2 and 2.1. It supplies you with the tools and techniques to
develop web applications with JSP and Java servlets. You’ll learn to
choose and implement the best persistence option for your web
applications, and how to secure web sites against malicious attack and
accidental misuse. You will improve the performance and scalability of
JSP pages, as well as architect reliable, stable applications.
The
authors describe all of the rich JSP 2 features, and explain JSF
integration with JSP. Completing the thorough package, this book
examines how integration with open source projects like Ant, Struts,
XDoclet, JUnit, and Cactus can make web development even easier.

The year is 1984, but not for long. Aomame bolts from the cab, walks
onto the elevated Tokyo expressway, descends an emergency ladder to the
street below, and enters a strange new world. In parallel, a math
teacher and aspiring novelist named Tengo gets an interesting offer to
rewrite a mysterious 17-year-old's story for the final round of a young
writer's literary prize. So begins Haruki Murakami's magnum opus,
an epic of staggering proportions that folds in a deliciously
intriguing cast of characters and central motifs--the moon, Janáček's Sinfonietta, George Orwell's 1984--that
acquire powerful resonance as Aomame and Tengo's paths take on a
conjoined life of their own, dancing with a protracted elegance that
requires nearly 1,000 pages to reach its crowning denouement. 1Q84
was a runaway bestseller in its native Japan, but more importantly,
it's easily the grandest work of world literature since Roberto Bolaño's
2666 and represents a monstrous literary event. Now would somebody please award Murakami his Nobel Prize?

When Jaycee Dugard was eleven years old, she was abducted from a school
bus stop within sight of her home in South Lake Tahoe, California. She
was missing for more than eighteen years, held captive by Phillip Craig
and Nancy Garrido, and gave birth to two daughters during her
imprisonment. On August 26, 2009, Garrido showed up for a meeting with
his parole officer; he brought Jaycee, her daughters, and his wife Nancy
with him. Their unusual behavior raised suspicions and an investigation
revealed the tent behind the Garridos’ home where Jaycee had been
living for nearly two decades.

A Stolen Life was written by
Jaycee herself and covers the period from the time of her abduction in
1991 up until the present. In her stark, compelling narrative, she opens
up about what she experienced—and offers an extraordinary account of
courage and resilience.
Readers captivated by Twilight and New Moon will eagerly devour Eclipse,
the much anticipated third book in Stephenie Meyer's riveting vampire
love saga. As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a
malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again
finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is
forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with
Jacob --- knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the
ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation
quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death.
But which is which?

George Gamow tends to get forgotten these days. He died some time ago,
and his books are now over forty years old. Some, like his history of
20th century physics, may seem a bit dated in light of the discoveries
since then.

Yet there's still magic in these pages. Gamow was one of
the greatest of 20th century physicists, and at the same time, a great
teacher whose passion for the sheer fun of math and science was
communicated in his books, whether explaining the wonders of infinite
series, or how to locate a hidden pirate's treasure chest using
imaginary numbers. Unlike a lot of modern poipular science writers,
Gamow didn't shy away from showing you the math- but he could explain
in a way that even an elementary school child could understand.
A wonderful book for the child or adult who isn't afraid to think.

In his final hours in the Oval Office, the outgoing President grants a
controversial last-minute pardon to Joel Backman, a notorious Washington
power broker who has spent the last six years hidden away in a federal
prison. What no one knows is that the President issues the pardon only
after receiving enormous pressure from the CIA. It seems Backman, in his
power broker heyday, may have obtained secrets that compromise the
world’s most sophisticated satellite surveillance system.

Backman is
quietly smuggled out of the country in a military cargo plane, given a
new name, a new identity, and a new home in Italy. Eventually, after he
has settled into his new life, the CIA will leak his whereabouts to the
Israelis, the Russians, the Chinese, and the Saudis. Then the CIA will
do what it does best: sit back and watch. The question is not whether
Backman will survive—there is no chance of that. The question the CIA
needs answered is, who will kill him?

A riveting historical narrative of the heart-stopping events
surrounding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and the first work of
history from mega-bestselling author Bill O'Reilly

The anchor of The O'Reilly Factor
recounts one of the most dramatic stories in American history—how one
gunshot changed the country forever. In the spring of 1865, the bloody
saga of America's Civil War finally comes to an end after a series of
increasingly harrowing battles. President Abraham Lincoln's generous
terms for Robert E. Lee's surrender are devised to fulfill Lincoln's
dream of healing a divided nation, with the former Confederates allowed
to reintegrate into American society. But one man and his band of
murderous accomplices, perhaps reaching into the highest ranks of the
U.S. government, are not appeased.
In the midst of the patriotic
celebrations in Washington D.C., John Wilkes Booth—charismatic ladies'
man and impenitent racist—murders Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre. A
furious manhunt ensues and Booth immediately becomes the country's most
wanted fugitive. Lafayette C. Baker, a smart but shifty New York
detective and former Union spy, unravels the string of clues leading to
Booth, while federal forces track his accomplices. The thrilling chase
ends in a fiery shootout and a series of court-ordered
executions—including that of the first woman ever executed by the U.S.
government, Mary Surratt. Featuring some of history's most remarkable
figures, vivid detail, and page-turning action, Killing Lincoln is history
Shoot, I muttered when the paper sliced my finger; I pulled it out to
examine the damage. A single drop of blood oozed from the tiny cut.It
all happened very quickly then.Edward threw himself at me, flinging me
back across the table...I tumbled down to the floor by the piano, with
my arms thrown out instinctively to catch my fall, into the jagged
shards of glass. I felt the searing, stinging pain that ran from my
wrist to the crease inside my elbow. Dazed and disoriented, I looked up
from the bright red blood pulsing out of my arm-into the fevered eyes of
the six suddenly ravenous vampires.Legions of readers entranced by
Twilight are hungry for more and they won't be disappointed. In New
Moon, Stephenie Meyer delivers another irresistible combination of
romance and suspense with a supernatural twist. The "star-crossed"
lovers theme continues as Bella and Edward find themselves facing new
obstacles, including a devastating separation, the mysterious appearance
of dangerous wolves roaming the forest in Forks, a terrifying threat of
revenge from a female vampire and a deliciously sinister encounter with
Italy's reigning royal family of vampires, the Volturi. Passionate,
riveting, and full of surprising twists and turns, this vampire love
saga is well on its way to literary immortality.

Though he may not speak of them, the memories still dwell inside Jacob
Jankowski's ninety-something-year-old mind. Memories of himself as a
young man, tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the
Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. Memories of a world
filled with freaks and clowns, with wonder and pain and anger and
passion; a world with its own narrow, irrational rules, its own way of
life, and its own way of death. The world of the circus: to Jacob it was
both salvation and a living hell.

Jacob was there because his
luck had run out—orphaned and penniless, he had no direction until he
landed on this locomotive "ship of fools." It was the early part of the
Great Depression, and everyone in this third-rate circus was lucky to
have any job at all. Marlena, the star of the equestrian act, was there
because she fell in love with the wrong man, a handsome circus boss with
a wide mean streak. And Rosie the elephant was there because she was
the great gray hope, the new act that was going to be the salvation of
the circus; the only problem was, Rosie didn't have an act—in fact, she
couldn't even follow instructions. The bond that grew among this
unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and ultimately, it was their
only hope for survival.

Surprising, poignant, and funny, Water for Elephants
is that rare novel with a story so engrossing, one is reluctant to put
it down; with characters so engaging, they continue to live long after
the last page has been turned; with a world built of wonder, a world so
real, one starts to breathe its air.
