Faculty’s Jared Paul on NKOTB, the Package Tour, Boston, Themed Cruises and More

Manager/producer Jared Paul, who recently rebranded his company Faculty, has had his hands full with the New Kids on the Block album, 10, and Package Tour (the latter also featuring 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men). Then there are all his other acts, the all-star Boston Strong benefit concert, and multiple other projects. Why he wasted a few precious minutes of downtime talking to us is a mystery.

How did Boston Strong come about?
It started with a call from Donnie Wahlberg; he said the bands of Boston had to come together and help after what happened at the Marathon, so we reached out to Don Law and Dave Marsden at Live Nation. We’re all extremely passionate about it. It’ll take place at the TD Garden Arena on May 30 and will benefit ONEFUND, which was set up to aid victims and first responders. New Kids on the Block, Aerosmith, James Taylor, Carole King, Jimmy Buffett, Jason Aldean and several other major acts will perform.

Tell us a bit about the NKOTB album and the Package Tour.
We’d done the previous record with Interscope [2008’s Top 5 album The Block]. But we set about very consciously to produce the record ourselves and to produce the record independently.
And one of the biggest reasons we did that—having the absolute utmost respect for Jimmy Iovine and everything he did for the band —is because the New Kids are in a way no different than Phish or the Grateful Dead. They’re touring juggernauts with an extremely loyal community. Our agenda was to make a record that we were proud of, that the fans would love. It’s the soundtrack to the party.

You’ve also had an interesting array of partners.We’ve been able to get some amazing partners—whether it was Ryan Seacrest debuting the single or the artwork, or VEVO debuting a lyric video that we did with fan-generated content, or Perez Hilton being a partner on the making-of-the-album piece, or VH1 doing a making-of-the-video piece. Live Nation actually helped us debut our video, and this was a nontraditional partner. We know that it was the single biggest engagement of any piece of content Live Nation has ever put on one of their platforms.

Let’s talk a little bit about the creative that went into the album: the writing process, song selection.The band is very much a partnership. There were basically two production teams heavily involved in the record: a Dutch production team called DEEKAY Music, and a producer/writer named Brent Paschke, who worked directly with some of the band members as well.

It was made over the course of about three months. It was a very safe, exploratory process, and it happened very quickly. It’s an adult pop record. That said, their fans have actually gotten a bit younger. I think we grew our audience. We did a Backstreet Boys tour, so they can be in their early 20s and go up to their late 30s.
How did the package come together?The BSB tour was such a banner success. We saw that there are like-minded fans—and bands—out there. The New Kids prefer to play arenas. We took a two-year break from North America and toured internationally. We started thinking about like-minded artists and friends. The 98 Degrees guys played the Mixtape Festival with us, and there was camaraderie there. And, of course, the band has always had such a high regard for Boyz II Men. It started with a 25-city tour, and we’re at 50-plus right now.

We’re touring in the round, which is important, because we want every seat to be a good seat. We are very aggressive about keeping our ticket prices under $100. We haven’t significantly increased our ticket prices in six years. And we offer many VIP options, which sell out in minutes, because the band spends a lot of time interacting with their fans before their show.

Can you say a little bit about the cruise?We’re on our fifth one. We did it the summer of 2009, and it sold out in an hour. That was a 1,900-seat boat called The Imagination; we subsequently increased the boat to 3,000 people for all the years since. You don’t know what you’re getting into. At that time it was the fastest-selling cruise ship of all time. We’ve been doing it ever since. They have a great time. Who wouldn’t want to be on your own cruise ship you’ve chartered with 3,000 people who love you?

Let’s get into some of the rest of your roster.
Emblem3 on Columbia is exploding; every tour date and VIP package sold out in a minute. Their record is due out in June, A&R’d and executive produced by Savan Kotecha. I’ve managed Julianne Hough since before she was on Dancing With the Stars. She’s sold a half-million records as a country artist for Universal and toured with some of the biggest acts in the genre. MKTO just went triple platinum in Australia on their first single. We did 75 shows with Big Time Rush last year for Nickelodeon and Columbia, averaging well over 10,000 people. They’ll tour with Victoria Justice this summer in arenas and amphitheaters.

*TNT reality series “Boston’s Finest” ends its freshman season on Wednesday with an episode given more weight in light of Monday’s bombings.
As previously reported, the show is a passion project for its producer Donnie Wahlberg, a to-the-bone Bostonian whose tweets made national news yesterday as he sought an update on his New Kids on the Block band mate Joey McIntyre, who was running in the race.
Joey eventually tweeted that he was ok, and had crossed the finish line just five minutes before the two bombs went off, killing three people and injuring at least 170.
The handful of cops featured on “Boston’s Finest” were likely among those called to the horrific scene.
Wahlberg isn’t a cop, but he’s certainly played a bunch of them on TV. He’s currently NYPD detective Danny Reagan on CBS’ “Blue Bloods,” and suited up as an LAPD detective on NBC’s short-lived “Boomtown” in 2002. An opportunity, therefore, to follow real officers from his hometown was right in his wheelhouse.
“This is what speaks to my sensibilities,” Wahlberg told us during interviews for the show. “I’m in Boston all the time. I’m in those streets every day. I deal with the people there every day. So for me, the story that I want to tell is about the people that I know. It’s about the people I grew up with, the people I grew up around, and people who are doing heroic things.”

The Day After

Nothing can change that beautiful New England country side. Nothing can wipe away the moment I had with that Joey girl holding that well preserved New Kids poster from ‘89. Nothing can stop the “little person” walking up heart break hill or the double amputee walking down it on prosthetic “blades”. Nothing can take away that kiss I had with my mother. And no ones gonna tell me she didn’t recognize me. No one can take away the signs all along the course for every teacher and aunt and BFF and son and uncle that was running. Nothing can take away what happened 11 minutes after I ran a 3:57 Boston Marathon. And nothing will ever take away the power and resolve and fearlessness of the great city of Boston. We will get through this. It will take time. But we will get through this. See ya next year.

Day 60-ish

Sitting in the dressing room for the French Canadian version of The Voice (La Voix) with NKOTB. I am supposed to stay off my feet today and so far: mission accomplished in that one. I have had moments of anxiety/ excitement since I stopped into Boston to pick up my bib on Friday. Emotions start coming to the surfice. I am now thankful for the distraction of going to Toronto and Montreal this weekend. I’ve been sleep ok but then mercifully I just had a really good nap!! So we will shoot La Voix and be done at 7:40 and then jump on a plane and get into Boston around 10 and hopefully I’ll be in bed by 11-ish :)… feeling good. Let me thank you one more time for all your thoughts and prayers and well wishes!! See you out there on the course :)

NKOTB’s Joey McIntyre Gears Up For The Boston Marathon & “The Pack

New Kids on the Block’s own Joey McIntyre called Gina J to talk all about this summer’s highly anticipated tour with Boyz II Men and 98 Degrees! He also filled us in on the new NKOTB album, and his big race this Monday!
NKOTB’s youngest member grew up outside of Boston, and this Monday he will return to the city as a participant in the annual Patriots’ Day race– the Boston Marathon. “It is probably going to be very emotional being in my hometown and doing that,” Joey told Gina. “It’s very exciting.”
The singer has dedicated himself to months of training in preparation for the twenty six mile run, and he noted that all the hard work has been paying off. “I have learned a lot through the preparation and the training. Like anything, if you train the right way you feel prepared [and] I feel pretty good about the race.”
What did his strict regimen call for today?
“Today is sort of a day off,” he admitted. “I am supposed to do a little cross training, but I am ‘tapering’ as they say… I am slowing down before the big race.”
Joey informed us that he will be specifically running the race for his mother’s memory. “My mother has Alzheimer’s so I was raising money to fight Alzheimer’s,” he explained. “My goal was 26.2 thousand dollars [and] we just surpassed that on crowdrise.com/joeymcintyre. There’s nothing wrong with raising more even if you get to your goal.”
Highly anticipated since its announcement, “The Package Tour” will feature NKOTB, Boyz II Men, and 98 Degrees all on one stage this summer. The tour kicks off with three performances right here in CT– May 28th, 29th, and 31st at Mohegan Sun.
“Hopefully, I will be recovered from the marathon to be able to get up there and perform,” Joey joked. “Logistically speaking, it is just nice to be in one place [when you start the tour]. There’s nothing like opening night. It’s going to be exciting.”
NKOTB are sure to perform all their hits, as well as new material from their latest album, 10, which was released earlier this month. “We wanted to make new music because our fans wanted new music,” Joey explained. “We worked hard at it and kind of ‘seized the beast’ that is NKOTB. We are happy with how it turned out.”
So have their fans– 10 immediately made its debut in the top ten of the Billboard 200 chart.
“We are just really lucky and we try to give back in any way we can,” Joey replied. “It’s a nice give and take, that is for sure. We are just five guys lucky to be doing what we love to do.”

Donnie Wahlberg: NKOTB Star On Embracing Their 'Boy-Bandness,' Losing a Sister and TV Success - AOL MUSIC

Donnie Wahlberg's been making love.
The 43-year-old singer and actor is returning to his pop star past with New Kids on the Block's just-released record10 and tells AOL Music that making the album was a labor of love unlike any other in the group's three-decade span.
"When we were young we were all about dating girls and having fun," he says. "It's like we've stopped having sex and started making love. That's where we're at as a group now -- this is what we do, we love what we do and we're in love with what we do... so it makes making love all the more special!
"I enjoy every aspect more now than as a kid -- performing, recording, touring. I feel more at ease and confident, which is saying a lot because it's a young man's game."
While they're no longer kids, Wahlberg says the band have finally embraced their "boy-bandness," returning to their roots and having more fun recording 10 than 2008's reunion record The Block.
Still, learning to appreciate what they have hasn't been easy. Following the mind-blowing success which saw them dominate the late-'80s/ early-'90s pop scene -- much like One Direction does today -- the Boston quintet were left directionless in their early 20s and stumped about their futures, having already experienced a lifetime's worth of ups and downs.
"It's like you're on a really fast train and assume it'll keep going but one day it stops," says Wahlberg. "If you're not prepared, it's difficult. The public has an opinion of who you are and may never accept you as anything else.
"It may not seem a big deal, but when you're twentysomething and been through one of the most exhilarating rides of most people's lifetimes, you think it's forever. So being faced with, 'What will I do for the next 70 years?' is daunting because it's not easy to be on the cover of every magazine, then take a job at McDonalds.
"It's scary and lots of kids don't survive that initial huge success. They end up broke or on drugs. It takes a lot of hard work and belief in one's self to get through that and find your next phase in life. But if you can find your way to what it is you can do next -- that you can love and be proud of -- it's more fulfilling the second time around."
More fulfilling indeed. At 25, lost and baffled about his future, little did Wahlberg realize that some of his greatest successes would lie another 20 years down the track.
In what's shaping up to be the year of Donnie, the father-of-two has helped lead his show "Blue Bloods" to record-breaking ratings, is getting a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame and filming reality show "Wahlburgers" alongside actor brothers Mark and chef Paul about their Boston area burger restaurant. NKOTB tour dates are selling out and 10shot to number two on iTunes within hours of going on pre-order sale.
Then there's the project he's most proud of -- executive-producing "Boston's Finest." While the title may sound like a show about NKOTB, it's a reality series following the professional and personal lives of the Boston police department, a squad the Wahlberg siblings had many encounters with growing up.
"I really believe I was the perfect person to produce this show, with my love for the city, my experience playing a cop and my understanding of the police department," he says. "It's one of my proudest accomplishments and that's saying a lot.
"Sometimes, as a producer I want them to get called to serious crimes because it'll make great television, but as a human I don't want to see their lives in jeopardy because I've come to care for them so much."
While Donnie says he'd never be as good a cop as those on the series, he's continuing to have a blast playing Detective Danny Reagan on "Blue Bloods." The show's family focus has strongly-resonated with viewers and having grown up with eight siblings, it's what drew him to the role.
"'Blue Bloods' is a throwback show because they don't make shows that focus on families like this anymore. Nowadays, it's about the family down the street selling heroin or the husband with three wives. Everything's focused on the unusual family. When I read the pilot the family dinner scene attracted me most. I've felt the heat of my dad staring down at me and my sister while we're arguing and that same heat's there with Tom Selleck and Bridget [Moynahan].
"And just like we tease Tom on-screen, that's directly from my childhood with my dad. He was a very tough guy and we loved trying to break through that hard exterior and make him laugh."
The parallels between the Reagans and Wahlbergs were highlighted by a recent emotional episode where Wahlberg's son's life hung in the balance. Behind the scenes, Wahlberg was consumed with thoughts of sister Debbie, who passed away nine years ago at 43 -- the age Wahlberg is now.
"The way my family came together at the hospital, put our differences aside and were just there for her -- mum, dad, siblings, cousins, all spending the nights together. I really felt that spirit during that episode. I thought about how even in the worst of times our family tries to make the best of times."
After playing so many cops plus following them for "Boston's Finest," Wahlberg admits he now thinks like a police officer. While checking out a new condo recently, he left one realtor puzzled while conducting somewhat of a "police investigation" to determine if he could get a better deal because things weren't right in the laundry.
So do those policing traits kick into gear in the studio with NKOTB?
"I'm definitely one of the bosses of New Kids, but I'm not an authoritarian," he says with a laugh. "The guys trust me as a leader because I'm not disciplinary, I'm a good listener and I try to be selfless and put the team before myself."
The group will be joined by 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men when they hit Canada with "The Package Tour" in June. Having spent "a whole phase" of his career here, shooting projects like the "Saw" films and "The Path To 9/11," Wahlberg's pumped about returning.
"Canada has always been a special place to me. Driving to Edmonton two summers ago is one of my favourite touring memories ever. Seeing mountains, glacier-formations, moose... it's something I wouldn't have appreciated 20 years ago. I would've been in the back playing video games, so it's a treat to do these things again.
"And Canada's one of our biggest markets, so we're looking forward to getting back. I can't wait!"
