Researchers is working on a mosquito-killing laser with ability to kill around 100 mosquitoes per second

This device is called the mosquito laser and it was invented by an astrophysicist, Lowell Wood. The reasons behind it invention is simple, to kill as much mosquitoes as possible to prevent malaria from spreading.

It was originally introduced in 1980s but not much research had ever been done about this device until decades later. In a struggle to fight malaria, Intellectual Ventures has once again resurrected the idea of using laser to kill mosquitoes to prevent the diseases from spreading.

This idea however, has been criticized due to the fact that most area that’s affected by malaria doesn’t have a reliable source of electricity.

How it all started
They were brainstorming for some ideas to end malaria crisis when an architects from the Strategic Defense Initiative was suggesting that they build a laser that can shoot and kill the mosquitoes. Shortly after that, many scientists at Intellectual Ventures has follow up with that idea and they manage to start shooting mosquitoes with a year.

It awesome and it work
This device is called the Photonic Fence but it also known as "star wars mosquito defense system". It is best deployed around building such as school, hospital or even a village. Other than able to kill mosquitoes in range of 100ft, it also can kill around 50 to 100 mosquitoes every second.

But experts are not sure
This is an awesome device and being able to shoot mosquitoes really is sound cool. However, experts are still not sure about it effectiveness due to lack of electricity in malaria affected are such as some area in Africa. Other than that, experts are worried about the cost required to build this device.

Researchers found that lab rats are willing to help set their partner free

If you had to choose between helping a tortured friend out of their misery & getting 1 million dollar all for yourself, which one would you choose? We all know that a lot of people out there will choose money.

However, Inbal Ben-Ami Bartal from the University of Chicago had discovered that rats are able to learn and willing to set-free their cage-mate. And unlike most human, this rat seems willing to help even when it got nothing in return.

The researcher even try to distract the rat by using chocolate but the rat still keep it focus to save the trapped cage mate.

However, lab rats helping each other weren’t actually a new discovery. Back in 1959, Russell Church, a psychologist had train a rat to press a lever to get food. The psychologist then connects the lever to another cage that contains another rat.

If the first rat pushes the lever, it will get the food but the rat in the other cage will get a painful electrical shock. What happen next is amazing, after realizing that the lever that it push will cause painful electrical shock to the other rat, the first rat simply avoid the lever.

Russell Church then published his discovery in a paper called “Emotional reactions of rats to the pain of others”.

In 2006, Dale Langford from McGill University had made another similar research and she gets more evident that rats feel empathy.

What she did is she put a couple of rats together for two weeks before separating them. One of the rats is puts inside of a cage, and the other rat is outside of the cage. The rat can free his trapped partner by pushing against a restraining door and tipping it over. After about a week of learning how to do that, the rat successfully set his partner free.

These two experiment show that rat can feel empathy and willing to take action to help each other.

Due to prenatal scans and people in China prefer to have a son instead of a daughter. In 20 years, there might going to be 30-50 million unmarried men in China.

Prof Li Shuzhuo of the institute for population and development studies at Xi'an Jiaotong University said that a normal human birth ratio should be 106 males for every 100 female.

However, in China the amount of male had increase to 118. Which mean in the next two decade, there could be 30 to 50 million men having trouble finding a female.

Why this happen
This situation accure because in Chinese culture, a men will continue the family line. When a women get married, she will join her husband family and not the other way around.

Chinese people also prefer to have a boy because they want to have someone to take care of them when they're old. This had cause the amount of men in China to exploded.

Most expert are worried that too many unmarried men might going to cause problem such as sexual violent, prostitute trafficking and even crime.

There are so many different types of apples in the world that it would take almost 20 years for a person to try them all if s/he eat one new type of apple everyday.

According to the book, Cook's Wisdom, there are 7000 type of apples in the world. Most common type of apples such as Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Gala, and McIntosh can be found in the U.S.

Modern farming and production of apples that seem to be mass producing only certain type of apples might be the reasons why a lot of people didn't realize that the variety of apples is actually this much.

Some type of apples are best eaten raw while some other a better use for baking. Despite the mass amount of varieties, only a few type of apples are commonly use in cooking and massively consume by consumers.

Blue street are able to reduce crime and suicide?

Some area in Scotland and Japan switched to blue street light. As a result, crime and suicide rate in the area are decreasing.

In year 2000, a blue street light was introduced in Glasgow, Scotland to improve the city landscape. The number of crime in the area are getting lower after that.

Similar thing happen in Nara, Japan when the police started to set up blue street light around the neighborhood. The crime rate is reduced by 9 percent.

The Japanese also switched the light on the ends of platforms at Gumyoji Station in Yokohama to blue. As a result, there are no new suicide attempt was reported.

There might be several reasons for this, some of the reasons might include :

The unusual color cause people to be a lot more alert and caution.
Blue light might make people feel calmer compared to red and yellow.
Blue light usually associate with police, making people feel like the area is watched more strictly by law enforcement units.

It is still unknown if the crime and suicide rate will remain low when people has become accustomed to the blue light. Nevertheless, it is very interesting to see if a simple change like this can bring such a great impact.

An Australia graphic designer, Dan Fleming had create a very creative project where he draw animals using the alphabet that is used to spell the animals. This kind of art is known as typography and it involve using a variation of colors and alphabet to draw the shape of the animals.

What make it remarkable is the fact that the Rubik’s cube wasn’t actually invented as a toy. It was created by Erno Rubik, an architect from Hungarian as a working model to explain 3 dimensional geometry.

The first Rubik’s cube was weight 2 times heavier that the current one and it was called “Magic Cube”. However, after he design the cube, Rubik realize that he couldn’t solve the puzzle himself as the colored squares become more mixed up the more he move them.

The cube can be rearranged in 43 quintillion different ways. Nevertheless, he finally solve the puzzle after a month by rearranging the corner of each side first.

It took a few years for Rubik to market his invention as a toy. In 1979, Rubik’s cube was recognize as a potential hit at the Nuremberg Toy Fair and by 2009 it become the biggest-selling toy of all time as 350 million units was successfully sold worldwide.

The popularity of the cube never fully disappear, probably due to the “speed cubing” competition where people compete to be the fastest to solve the cube. The record is currently held by Mats Valk who manage to solve the puzzle in only 5.55 second.

Shelter is one of the most basic human need. But building houses had become a very difficult task mostly due to the facts that a lot of countries simply didn’t have enough construction workers and the amount of money involve in building houses for the population.

So, what can we do to tackle all this problem? We print houses with 3D printer of course!

Recently in east China, a private company had use a set of giant 3D printer to print out not just 1 but 10 houses. The one-story houses look like other ordinary houses, the only different is these houses was build using an intelligent printing array.

This intelligent printing array is made of 4 printers that use automatic spray to print out the house wall layer by layer. The material it use to print these wall is a combination of cement and construction waste.

Ma Yihe, the inventor of this giant 3D printer and his team are very proud of their quick-dry cement technology which make the printed materials to dry at a very fast rate. This new technology however, is still kept secret.

This printer also said to be eviroment friendly and cost effective.

Nevertheless, since this technology is so new and cost-effective, some peoples online had been questioning if the houses that was build using this technique is safe to live in and if these houses will be able to stand a natural disaster such as earth quake and tornado...and volcanic eruption. OK, I just made up the volcanic eruption part :-P

Okunoshima the rabbits island

During the world war 2, Okunoshima is a location where the military manufactured the poison gas. The operation was so secret, the island it self had been erased from many maps. The bunnies were used to test the power of the chimecal weapon produced there.

But that was years ago. Today, this is Bunnies Territory!

After the world war, Okunoshima which sometime called Usagi Jima (rabbits island) had been developed as a park. The island now have a hotel, camping ground and even a golf course. Visitor can even swim in the water surrounding the island.

However, a lot of peoples who arrive here might loose their desire to camping, swimming or even playing golf almost immediately due to being overwhelm by cuteness. Just look at this little fella!

If you think being sting by fire ants is painful, you obviously didn't want to be bitten by Panda Ant. Panda ants are also known as “cow killer” due to their sting which is strong enough to disable a cow. This species are not actually an ant, Panda ants are actually considered as some sort of wingless wasp.

How come you never see one?
Panda ant can produce about 2000 eggs per year. However, predator such as anteater is a threat to them. There are only a little information about this species available because panda ants are rarely spotted and not too many research and studies about them are ever made.

It so cute!
Despite their cute appearance, petting them might not be a good idea because if their sting can disable a cow, it maybe deadly to human too.

"Force field" might be use to replace windshield wipers

It look like a British super car manufacturer, McLaren are planning to replace windshield wipers with a "force field". The new system, which is adapted from fighter jets are able to shake water, dirt and bugs from the windscreen.

Is this technology affordable to the masses?
When we see a new technology become available to the masses, the price tag is often the number one factor that prevent ordinary peoples from purchasing it. However, according to The Daily Mail, this "force field" system could be produced for as little as £10 once it is perfected.

The benefits of using “force field” instead of the windshield wiper
Other than looking fancy, the new system also have some other benefits of using it. This include:

A better view since there's no wiper moving across your windscreen when you're driving
No more brochures or flayers under your wiper blade since there is no wiper blade at the first place.

Windshield wipers had been used for so many years and it probably take some time before this new system replace the traditional windshield wipers. Nevertheless, this is a very exciting news.

After watching some samurai films, I figure you might be interested in knowing how a real-life samurai warrior actually look like. So here are some pictures of them. From these pictures, we can see that they not only use sword as their weapon, but also bow and some sort of customized spear.

I personally think the real-life samurai warrior didn't look as cool as the one in the movies. But they do look brave and strong tho.

A Japanese photographer named Yoji Ookata was exploring the underwater world when he discover a mysterious symbol in the Japanese sea.
