It is here again, the best time before the best best time of year, Christmas in July! During this month, gifts began being bought and there are a lot of deals to enjoy. Reasons to start present buying now are many:

No Holiday traffic or crowds
Most likely to spend less on gifts
Highly likely to save more on sale items
Shopping is done early
All that is left to purchase in December is wrapping material
Black Friday is not the only option when it comes to great prices

These are a few reasons to go Christmas shopping early and one of the best reasons, it will lift spirits and may put one in a very happy holiday mood.

Christmas Savings in July

Many options are available when it comes to saving on gifts in July. Everyone is trying to filter out the previous years Christmas products, even William and Sonoma has fall and holiday goodies that will still be good for the holidays. Here are a few places to look at for great deals and gifts:

These are some suggestions, but there are more places to look for savings. Christmas gift shopping is so much fun right now because it is summer, and by the end of summer, there are so many bargains and right now is a good time to even stock up on needed winter clothes if able to find them on the sells rack.

Christmas Gift Shopping

For anybody gift shopping now or during the holiday season, these are a few tips to help the day/days enjoyable and to get one in the Christmas spirit.

Make a list, check it twice (go in knowing what is being sought)
Keep it simple (ornaments, framed sayings, picture books)
Go to one store or at least stores that are in walking distance (lets face it, shopping is exhausting sometimes and narrowing gifts down to one spot or general area is less stressful than jumping in the car, getting in traffic, parking, jumping back in, driving, and so on)
Shop with friends (get up and go out with friends, grab a seasonal coffee-if able-and have fun together)
Go early. The best time to get out is definitely when the stores open. By midday, everyone is out and about and less crowds is always a plus.
Take a break. Go have a meal, coffee, tea, snack, or, if with friends, everyone could bake a dozen of their favorite Christmas treat and share.

Christmas Time is Near

It is summer, time for beaches, cold drinks, laying out, sitting on the porch, and just relaxing, but..... it is also 6 months till CHRISTMAS DAY!!!! Hallmark Channel is already gearing up for their Christmas in July event (begins July 15th) and will be previewing holiday movies and showing old ones for several days, and people, amazingly enough, will begin shopping in order to get a head start.

Most of us know, shopping during the holiday season can be stressful, as well as a bit fun and exciting. However, it can also be extremely expensive. Whereas, getting the ball rolling early might help the pocketbook along with the sanity.

Early Christmas Shopping Tips:

July to September, end of summer sales, end of last years winter, Christmas items, and Fall items is BIG! This is a wonderful time to buy gifts, online and in store. Sell prices are usually very reasonable and there are discounts to be had (always check group on, retail me not, and other websites-including store websites-to slash prices a little more).

Go through the clothes sell rack (takes time, but last year, I found 2 Sweater perfect for winter reduced from over $50 to under $5, and some stores even have leggings and pants reduced for under $10)
Wallets and Change purses, look for those 60% to 80% off racks and towards the end of summer there can be a lot to choose from.
Shoes. Come autumn, boots and closed toed shoes are so expensive, look for those during the summer because many are marked down over 50% off.
Make-up. Be it through a consultant, a department store counter, or an actual beauty supply store, free gifts are often offered in abundance, prices are lowered because fall and holiday items are soon to follow, and look for those free gifts worth $40 or more because those make excellent Christmas presents.
QVC Network-I know, possibly not a first pick, however, this channel has some really good deals and the gifts will be Christmas themed, from plates, spreaders, to ornament packs that can be divided up into individual gifts, definitely give it a shot.
Christmas Shoppe-If able, go to the local Christmas store, many have a section where ornaments, decorations, and more are marked down %60+

Electronics, Appliances, and Toys can be bought during the summer, but in many cases, the deals are about the same and there is always a sale on all three. Even so, if buying appliances as a gift, beginning of fall tends to be a good time due to the fact that most home projects occur during Spring and Summer, so stores will want to filter out some products come fall, but come Christmas, those prices tend to go back up, just be on the look out.

The holidays are here and it is time to cook! It is also time to check out some new items for the holidays hitting store shelves and figuring out ways to incorporate them into favorite recipes or use as appetizers. It is also the season for holiday cooking specials galore, and one of the best shows from which to get inspiration is, The Kitchen, and this year there were two recipes that stuck out, cranberry glazed sweet potatoes, and not only can this recipe be served as is, they can be incorporated into other dishes.

New Holiday Food Items

So many new items are out, along with the staple ones everyone waits for the other 10-10 1/2 months of the year. Several food items hitting the shelves include:

Mocha Chocolate M&M's
M&M's Hot Chocolate
Cranberry and Sage Triscuits
Salted Caramel Pringles
Cranberry English Muffins
Nestle Toll House Candy Cane Morsels
Hot Cocoa Chips Ahoy

These are a few Holiday items on store shelves and as strange as Salted Caramel Pringles or Cranberry and Sage Triscuits sound, they are really good and can be used at the holiday table.
For the Pringles, use as a savory topping on a sweet potato or pineapple casserole or as broken pieces in glazed apples or an apple salad. For the Triscuits, use with a cranberry cheese ball or a seasonal dip as an appetizer.

Using the M&M's for toppings or inside baked recipes is always a good idea. When baking cookies, brownies, cakes, or even for an ice cream inspired treat, add these or broken up chips ahoy or candy morsels to the mix to add extra flavor, and enjoy those flavors more while sipping a cup of Peppermint Coffee (Keurigs Peppermint coffee is delicious!).

Use the Red Velvet donuts as appetizers as well as the cranberry salsa. Buying the prepared cranberry salsa is actually less expensive than homemade and will safe the cook time and money. As for the Cranberry English muffins, what better to use for the leftover sandwiches during the holidays? All of the foods listed are really good and certain to add flavor to anyone holiday.

Cranberry Glazed Sweet Potato Stuffing

The Food Network show, The Kitchen, featured several holiday favorites from turkey to desert, and one of the side dish items featured was cranberry glazed sweet potatoes. They are easy to make, minimal mess, and very economical friendly, along with delicious! Another plus, this recipe can be turned into a stuffing. Simply follow the recipe used on The Kitchen, but only pour 1/4 cup of the glaze over the sweet potatoes. Stir in the sweet potato glaze mixture into cornbread, sausage and apple, or out-of-the box turkey, chicken, sage, or cornbread stuffing (already prepared). Add about 1/2 cup of the glaze into the mix and spread into a large rectangular baking dish. Bake at 325 to 350 degree Fahrenheit for 25-30 minutes. Half way through, butter the top of the stuffing and spread 1/4 cup of the glaze over the top, finish cooking. The result, a sweet and savory stuffing that incorporates everything from cranberry to sweet potato that still goes perfectly with gravy.

Christmas items in Starbucks! The outrage!

Starbucks has decided not to celebrate Christmas this year. Yes, there will be the usual selection of Eggnog, Gingerbread, Chestnut Praline, and Crème Brulee Lattés, and Peppermint Mocha, and the favorite treats including cranberry bliss bar (mouth watering good), but there is no Christmas scene or holiday design on the cup which is obviously a sign that the corporation is totally Anti-Christmas. Seriously, who sells Christmas food items and doesn't put a Christmas tree or Santa face on their cups, napkins, and other items to go with it? What is an Eggnog latte without ornaments on a paper cup that is going to end up in the trash? Come on Starbucks, where's your Christmas Spirit?!?!?

It seems like they left that spirit on the menu and on the sale floor. Sure, go ahead and sell $12.95 mugs with ornaments on them, Christmas K-cups and Coffee for $9.95 to $16.95, and big travel mugs and even a $2 refillable cup that says "JOY" on, making millions have to skip out on TWO or THREE or FOUR holiday lattés in order to buy a cup they will have at home with Christmas designs on it, but don't bother giving your patrons a beautifully designed Christmas scene on the cup that will go into the trash. That's fine, your customers will gladly go roam the country for a store with holiday coffees that offer them a holiday cheer paper or Styrofoam or whatever cup, because of all the things to boycott Starbucks over, this is it!

Now, honestly, the cups are pretty boring and blah as far as Christmas cheer go, and as painful as it is, most people will probably still be drawn to your company because of the delicious Christmas beverages and treats and possible gift items, and the fact that gold card members get awesome deals, and because the company is doing the buy 5 grande or venti holiday beverages and get 1 free offer, with the little ornaments stickers. Even so, the point is, this company has gone too far, and the cup issue must be fixed, ASAP! To all the Bah Humbuggers, from now on my name for the baristas will be "Merry Christmas!" Take that, Starbucks.

Thanksgiving Leftover: Baked Burritos

Thanksgiving or Christmas, this is a leftover recipe that can be used with chicken, duck, turkey, pork, or beef, and it could even be made as a quick pre-Thanksgiving meal for the family the night before a holiday because it is so easy to put together. Using shredded turkey, cheese, salsa (or make it interesting and mix in some cranberry with the salsa), rice (even a thin layer of mashed potatoes), and flour or corn wraps, this is a great meal for Black Friday or after the holidays, and extremely versatile.

Ingredients:

1/2-1 lb. shredded meat
12-15 Flour or Corn Wraps
2-3 cups of Mild or Medium Salsa or (if using mashed potatoes) 1-2 cups gravy (yea, it gets interesting in a good way)
3 lb. Shredded Cheddar Cheese
2 cups cooked rice or 1 cup mashed potatoes
1-2 cups baked, black, pinto, or kidney beans (optional)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Spread about 1/2 cup salsa (if using the mashed potatoes, use leftover gravy instead of salsa) on the bottom of a casserole dish (9X9 or 13X9).
Fill each wrap with meat, beans, and some cheese. Roll and place side by side in the baking dish.
Spread the rice on top and the rest of the salsa on top of the rice, then top with lots of cheese.
Bake for 20-25 minutes (until cheese is melted and slightly bubbling).
Wait 5 minutes, then dig in!!

Another way to make this-

Follow the 1st step above.
Spread some Cranberry sauce on the bottom of the baking dish, along with some gravy.
Fill the wraps with some stuffing and turkey, roll and place side by side in the dish.
Spread Mashed Potatoes on top, then top with cranberry sauce and gravy. Add some Italian Cheese if desired.
Bake 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are slightly browned and the top is bubbling and warmed.
Wait 5 minutes and EAT!!

This is such a fun way to take leftovers and incorporate them in a dish that is totally different and one that kids will love to eat, because it is not the same old leftover meal. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!!!!

The Holiday season is coming up quick, as it approaches updates on latest sales, toys, and other children's gifts will be given. Even so, it is the time of year to start the looking, shopping, and the laying away. So far, several items are on boys and girls toy lists for the year, here are some to consider looking for now:

Girls:

Frozen items-pretty much goes without says-even so, for preschoolers there is Frozen Karaoke and also, probably a huge item, Sing-A-Long Elsa-prepare yourselves folks
Barbie Style your Way House and Style your Way Fashion-accessories and items for the house can be purchased separately but aids in creativity as well as story telling and development
Calico Critters-this series is absolutely wonderful for younger children. Kids will have fun creating a town full of friendly critters who take care of each other and may even help kids in developing a town with a sense of community and realizing how all professions and people come together to see that everyone is happy and needs are met.
Princess Peppa- For toddlers
Little Live Pets-this is a bird cage with a bird that will sing and be a fun addition to a kids room-also, easy pet to take care of
Monster High Castle and Play sets-This series has really kicked off and kids will have fun recreating scenes using the "Freaky Fusion Catacomb" Set

Star Wars Lego- As a mom of 3 boys, all that has been talked of for weeks now is the new Star Wars film and toys! One of the best gifts to give a boy or girl is legos, and what better way to celebrate the highly anticipated opening of the new film than with legos? Several have caught the eyes, including the Wookie Gun and Sandcrawler, but there are many to choose from and all will inspire young Jedi's everywhere to build a galaxy of their own.
Star Wars Blade Builders Master Jedi Light Saber-oh yea, this and Kylo Ren's light saber are going to be popular with the fans.
Star Wars Interactive R2-D2-Yea, another popular toy (also, there is an interactive Yoda who will teach young Jedi's to become masters and is actually pretty cool), he walks, spins, moves in any direction, can be programmed to do 1000 different commands, is voice activated, and even projects images of Leia on the wall. Talk about a popular item for the holidays, this is it.
Nerf N-Strike Modulus ECS-10 Blaster-Last year it was bows and arrows from the Nerf company, this year it is back to a blaster. This is pretty much an updated version of all other Nerf blasters, just new, but look for the sales on the item on Black Friday andCyber Monday and know, they go fast.
MeccaNoid G15 KS Personal Robot-Anyone remember the movie, "Short Circuit?" Well, this robot will bring back memories and create new ones for children. This robot talks, communicates with people, but it will require a long assembly time.

Hallmark Channel Christmas Movie Line-up

Hallmark Channel's, "Home and Family," finally previewed the line-up of original movies for the 2015 Christmas season, beginning on Halloween! The best part, this year-there is 17 new original movies and a FIVE night movie event during Thanksgiving. One has to admit, the movies have gotten better over the years, and continue to do so. Last year's movies were huge hits for the Hallmark Channel, more so than year's past, many premiering at number 1 and even being the most watched show on television.

Hallmark Christmas Movie Line-up 2015:

The Christmas line-up includes stars such as Candance Cameron Bure, Danica McKeller, everyone's favorite teacher on the show When Calls the Heart, Rachael Boston, Lori Laughlin, Baily Madison, Dermot Mulroney, William Shatner, Christopher Lloyd, and what seems to be the headliner, Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey directs and acts in the last movie to première of the season (Dec. 19th), Melody and Mistletoe. Even so, the most anticipated movie is most likely, Northplole: Open for Christmas and for Debbie Macomber's Dashing through the Snow.

Northpole was an instant hit with viewers last year. Hallmark stores sold the Christmas tree light up device from the movie and the Elf/Santa talker (can't remember the names of the items), and people fell in love with the heartwarming story, and Debbie Macomber is a Hallmark staple now and her books are absolutely wonderful and perfect for those looking for an easy heartfelt reading experience, but no matter what, all these movies (17!) will make for one Holly Jolly Christmas on the Hallmark Channel.

So get ready, Oct. 31st is when the holiday madness begins and it is going to be wonderful! Merry Christmas!

Christmas in July

Christmas in July has really been building up over the past few years. Now, it seems like everywhere one turns their is a Christmas in July special, event, show, sale, or movie! And it is AWESOME!!! Of course, the best part of Christmas in July is the preview of ornaments at Hallmark. This is an event that has been going on since this blogger can remember. In fact, my first job was as a temporary ELF at the première of the ornaments at Hallmark. Yeah..... an ELF. Fast forward a few years and, even though manning the food station and inviting customers into the store in an Elf outfit was a bit embarrassing, I still get excited and go shop at Hallmark in July.

Although, the store premières its ornaments, do not overlook other areas of the store. There are some great gift ideas in there and Fall and Christmas items from the previous year marks down BIG time. One fun gift idea is the "You might be a Redneck if..." magnets and coasters, all $1. Peanuts items slightly marked down but always a fun gift, and Fall sayings marked up to 80% off. Now, the main draw is the ornaments, and in some stores some older ones can be found at a discount price but for the most part all are full price. Even so, the best time to start Christmas list shopping is now in order to really enjoy the holidays later.

However, there are other stores prepping, already, for the Holidays (including Halloween). Craft stores are starting to bring in Autumn decorations, and by the end of August, discounts on those items begin to appear, and by October, the craft stores mark them down big time and begin to bring in the Christmas items. For Christmas lovers, especially those who enjoy being crafty, look out for decorative items from last year (often in the isles, on the sides, sometimes in the very front) to get crafty with. Also, go ahead and stock up on paint and brushes to decorate plastic or glass ornaments. Even though these are low cost items, this way it will cut cost later and will be ready to use when needed.

Another great gift to go on and buy for those who love them, or for ones self, CANDLES!! Many candle and fragrance stores have holiday scents, most have Fall items out right now, but the holiday candles are still being sold. For those who want to wait, the new fragrances usually show up sometime between September and October. On the plus side, that is when the Autumn items start going on sale too.

Of course, do not forget clothes and yes, winter and Christmas apparel can be found now for up to 80% off! Kohl's is a great option. Check out the sales rack, no matter what store, take the time to really look through stuff. There were sweaters and dresses all under $10! Some other stores, such as Belk's, have Christmas shirts from last year. So, for those who need that gaudy Christmas shirt for a party or photo but do not want to spend as much on it, go look now for the discounts.

Now, for those looking to do for others, Samaritan's Purse is always doing shoeboxes and some areas do them in July and December. It is a great ministry and for anyone who has participated in it, they will tell you the immense joy it brings to kids and families who really have nothing-not even pencils or crayons or paper. It is a wonderful opportunity and one of many to look into. It is always fun to get excited about sights and sounds of the Holidays but it is so important to think of others and keep that Christmas Spirit going year around.

It is never too early to begin the Christmas shopping process. Even if it is the week after Christmas, which is an awesome time to buy next year's gifts. Shopping early has multiple benefits, one of the main benefits, not running around like a crazy person with all the other people trying to find gifts. However, for families with children, early shopping may not always be the best idea or it could be an excellent one, but the main reason for early shopping is co-workers, aunts and uncles, grandparents, friends, and siblings, leaving the children for the Thanksgiving sales is understandable.

Reasons to Shop for the Holidays Early

Summer is a great time to go ahead and buy Holiday gifts for family, especially towards the end of July through the beginning of September (Labor Day sales). Reasons for shopping during this time include:

No Holiday Traffic
No gigantic lines at every store entered
Easier access to decent parking spaces
Less stressed store employees (even if it does not seem so, it very much is, anyone who has worked retail or in any store can probably agree)
More likely to find items being sought
Christmas in July sales
Reduced prices on many holiday items online (many stores, companies, even eBay, offer holiday sale items throughout the year and, if lucky to find, in stores)
Personal favorite reason: Coffee and food lines are short and one can still order Peppermint mocha's at Starbucks in most areas year around

Honestly, the list of reasons goes on and on and with all the Christmas in July events and the fact that many stores start loading up on holiday items early, finding holiday gifts is pretty simple. A great tip, if going to a specialty store (like those in Gatlinburg or, near here, Biltmore Village or a specific year 'round Christmas shop) find the sales tables and racks. Items can be discounted up to 80% off. Also, check out retailmenot.com, and get daily offers for multiple stores and websites.

Christmas Gifts to Buy Early

Focus on family and friends. For some, it may be as easy as ordering gift baskets from Hickory Farm in December for everyone or just buying gift cards at a specific store, one store for men and one for women. Even as easy as that is, it can add up. A quick tip in this case:

Have a Christmas account ready to use when the holidays hit-specifically for friends and family
Set a specific amount for family and friends-same or more for one, less for the other
Know how many are being bought and if it is going to be an individual or couples gift

For those who like to buy separate gifts for everyone, here are some more tips for buying early presents:

Gift cards to favorite stores
Canned jelly and jams (prepared at the end of summer, store in the cupboards, decorate with gift tag and ribbon and give along side crackers or biscuit mix, easy peezy)
Make-up Sales, end of summer sales make a great time to hit the make-up aisles or department and maybe even score a free gift to keep or give
End of summer clothing sale for men and women, stores have huge sales during this time and even towards Thanksgiving when it comes to Fall apparel. Look for sales items, especially in stores like Target, in the back near dressing rooms. In fact, some winter items from last year are still in stores but marked down 80-85% in some places. The other day, at Kohls, I bought a $37 long sleeve shirt for $9.95, marked down 3 times-pretty good deal. It takes some searching but is worth it.
Books or planners or calendars, go ahead and get some books or planners for the following year .

Lotions, Body Wash, and soaps are always a good buy but many stores seem to have spectacular deals on these items at Christmas and offer added bonuses. If buying for kids, end of summer is a great time to buy clothes, but it might be better to buy a size up in pants-if it's an infant or toddler, stick to the size they will be at Christmas-parents will use it at some point. As for toys at this point, keep it simple-stuffed animals, Imaginext or Legos, Lincoln Logs, toys that make noise, Mattel cars, bubble machines, ball and bat, summer items that will not be available come Christmas.

Christmas Sales!

Even though it is Spring time, sales on Christmas items can be found. Today, William Sonomas was a total surprise. Some of the items on sale included "Gingerbread Cheesecake Mix" for $.97 (YES!!), "Peppermint Cookie Mix" for $4.97, "Peppermint Bundt Cake" for under $5 and more! To add to the fun, caramel goods and some fall items were also on sale and the expiration date (unlike some of the food mixes found at Hallmark and other stores) were good through 2016!!! Talk about excited.

Some other stores that have Christmas sales include local Christmas shops. Many of these shops have upstairs rooms or separate areas where sales are located and when items are up to 80% off, it is so worth it to check those rooms out and perhaps find a Christmas gift for this year. Hallmark also offers great sales on winter holiday items at this time and yes, those are also somewhat hidden in the store but can be found, and don't forget to go to the sales racks in Kohl's, especially in the home goods section because they offer extremely good markdowns.

Starbucks, depending on locations-both in grocery stores and chain stores-is selling single and 9 or 12 packs (cannot remember the exact number) K-cups Blonde Christmas Blend and another Christmas Blend. The individual cups are $1.50 and the boxes are reduced to $4.95. If seen, grab.

No matter what time of year Christmas deals can be found. Merry Christmas Everyone!!!

Winter Decorations

Just because the Christmas season is over does not mean that the lights and all ornaments need to be boxed up for the next 10-11 months. Make the season last longer, throughout the winter or even the year just by using snowflake, homemade or bought, ornaments, tinsel, and white or blue lights.

Grove Park Inn Gingerbread Houses 2014

Directions:

Wrap the lights around white tinsel (or whatever color of tinsel is available) and hang in windows, above the fire place, entertainment center, or doorways. Place ornament hooks onto snowflake or snowman ornaments and hang along the lit tinsel.

Another way to add some winter flare to the home is by creating a winter wreath using blue tinsel, foam wreath, and white snowflake wire tinsel.

Wrap the foam wreath with the blue tinsel. Use a glue gun to secure the first and last piece to the foam wreath. Wrap the snowflake wire around the blue tinsel. Hang using blue ribbon or wreath hook.

"Inventing Scrooge"

During the holidays this blogger starts reading Christmas stories in October! Some favorites include, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever," "A Christmas Story," "Humor For the Holidays," and "Mrs. Miracle." Throughout the 7 years where reading 3-5 holiday books during the season, this woman has never read the classic most famous novel by Dickens, "A Christmas Carol." Now, I have seen numerous movies of the story, but never ever read the book, but that is about to change thanks to one book that took me on a journey into the characters of the beloved classic and its author.

Inventing Scrooge by Carlo DeVito, is a fantastic read. The book dives into the history of the man behind the story and how his daily/nightly walks and travels, along with financial fears, helped him pen A Christmas Carol. From Marley and Fred to the three Spirits of Christmas and Scrooge, every character has a personal story from Dickens's past and, in some cases, notable men of England's past. The story was written with such detail, that even the fireplace in Scrooge's bed chamber is based on one from Dickens's favorite childhood home.

Charles Dickens was a well-known, well desired, writer by the time his Christmas tale was written, but what led him to write the tale was the loss of money on a recently developed book that was not very popular with the public. Due to his childhood, Dickens was terrified of not having money and of spending money and time wisely. He grew up in a home where the parents became frivolous in spending, eventually landing his father in debtors prison and the children in child labor. After reading the "behind the scenes" of his life in this book, readers will realize how much of himself is in every novel from A Christmas Carol to Oliver Twist that he has written. Even so, it is not just Dickens life that is featured, it is that of the characters, and one way in which Dickens drew inspiration was by walking.

Dickens took daily/nightly walks to help him physically and mentally. During these walks he went through all sorts of areas, no matter where he may be, but one of his favorite cities to walk was London. Even so, it was during a walk through a grave yard where he came up with the name Ebenezer Scrooge, on another journey he saw a door knob that he decided to describe as the one on Scrooge's door, and it is possible that even Marley's name was thought of during his nightly journey's, but characters such as Fred and Fanny came from his own family.

The character Fred is based on his own brother, a brother who he loved and helped and tried so hard to keep in line in order to keep him from ending up like their father. It is said that the first meeting of Fred and Scrooge in the book was based on the feelings Dickens had for his brother when his brother, who was a joy to Dickens and his wife and children, and him got into an argument and left. This and so much more is why DeVito's book has officially inspired me to read A Christmas Carol.

This is a wonderful novel, some critics say as good as Dickens own story, and will make one see the characters of the story with a whole new light. Highly recommended read. Merry Christmas all year round!!!

A few days ago, I found $2 kid pants, originally $17, but the key to finding them was really looking, taking time is definitely helpful.

Hallmark is a big deal during the holidays, this past season was no exception and the best prices on their ornaments come after the Christmas season. There are still plenty of ornaments online along with Interactive Storybooks and puzzles. While in store, there is usually an area, not in plan site, that has a Hodge lodge of holiday items ranging from Halloween to Christmas that can be as low as a few cents.

There are so many reasons to check out the sales and maybe make a new tradition to shop for Christmas gifts after Christmas rather than fighting the Black Friday or pre-Christmas crowd. Here's to keeping the Christmas Spirit all year long, and wishing everyone a Happy New Year!!!

Winter Snowflakes

Kids Craft: Winter Snowflakes

Using snowflakes and garland to decorate is not only for the holiday season, it can also be for the entire Winter season. Every year, for the past three, this family has made snowflakes out of construction or computer paper and used thread or garland and thumb tacks to hang them throughout the house. It is amazing how something as simple as snowflakes and garland can bring such joy, not only to the kids but in terms of decorating and budgeting.

Materials:

Strings of garland (as low as $1 at Wal-Mart and Dollar Tree)
Colored Construction Paper (a booklet for $2.49-$3.00 depending on store)
Thread or Wrapping Ribbon
1 bag/box of Tacks
Scissors

Directions:

Follow Instructions on how to cut snowflakes at the following site: Snowflakes
String the garland throughout a room, using thumb tacks to secure to ceiling.
Cut six inch ribbon pieces at loop through one of the holes in the snowflakes. Tie onto the garland in any pattern desired.

This is fun, easy, inexpensive, and can even be done on a snow day. The best part is, it can be used as a Christmas decoration in the kid's rooms and left up throughout the winter! Happy Holidays Everyone!

Fudge Cookies

Theses cookies are the result of fudge that decided not to set properly. After making the Kraft Jarred Marshmallow recipe with semi-sweet morsels instead of the stated Baker's Chocolate Bars, the fudge did not want to set, but it tasted like Hot Chocolate. Delicious!!! Instead of throwing it out, this batch of fudge was transformed, melted slightly, and turned into delicious Hot Chocolate Fudge Cookies.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 to 2 cups, softened Fudge
2 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions:

Soften fudge in the microwave on high for about 30 seconds, set aside.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
Pour the fudge into a mixer, mix on low to medium for 30 seconds, till creamy, add the flour mixture until firm (like cookie dough).
Spray a cookie sheet with baking spray or line with parchment paper.
Place 1-2 inch balls onto the cookie sheet, cook 17-20 minutes.
Let sit for about 5 minutes, remove from sheet using a spatula, place on a plate or tray and enjoy!

These turned out to be a favorite this year with the kids. What was a lost cause, in terms of fudge, became a great save for mom! Woohoo! Merry Christmas and enjoy.

Holiday Salad

Simple light side dish for the holidays, a delightfully delicious salad. Most holiday meals focus on carbs and protein, but it is always nice to have a light dish before hand or as an option for guests. This salad and dressing is easy to assemble with easy to find ingredients. Most importantly, it is good.

Ingredients:

1 Large Head of Lettuce
1 pack of Grape tomatoes
1 container (6-12 oz) Feta Cheese
1/2 cup Dried Cranberries
1/2 cup Chopped Walnuts or Pecans
1/2 cup Vegetable or Olive Oil
1/2 cup Balsamic or Red Wine Vinegar
2-3 Tablespoons of Fresh squeezed Lemon Juice

Directions:

Chop the lettuce, place in a large pot and fill with water, let sit for 30 minutes. Drain the water, dry the lettuce (this can be done the day before, just store the lettuce in the container or bowl being used for the salad in the fridge overnight).
Wash the tomatoes by running water over them. Let remaining water drain on a kitchen towel that has ben folded.
Place the dried lettuce, tomatoes, Feta Cheese, Cranberries, and Walnuts into a large salad bowl and toss together.
In a small bowl, mix the Oil, Vinegar, and Lemon Juice using a fork until blended together. Pour over the salad and toss together before serving.

This goes great with the classic holiday meal of turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, and more. Merry. Christmas!!!

Okay, it is getting close to the big day and many people may start to get nervous while trying to find toys for the kids, popular electronics, and just figuring out what to get and where to find it for the best price. Well, do not worry, there is still time and stores are still offering amazing deals online and in store.

Christmas Clothes Shopping:

Personal favorites include, Old Navy, Kohl's, JC Penney, Sear's, and Target. The best part about these stores, with the exception of Old Navy, they can be a one stop shop for those who do go out to the stores to shop. However, if looking for toy deal in store, Wal-Mart still seems to have the best price cuts and will match the price.

Here are some tips for these locations:

Old Navy is offering up to 60% off on most the store, bought a sweater for $12 the other day, and $10 kid jeans/$15 adult jeans. Also, if shopped there within the last ten days, get your receipt, go to the survey listed on the receipt, this shopper got 15% off the next visit, but it is normally 10%.
Kohl's has great deals when it comes to clothes, toy wise, there are some good ones on Mattel Products, in fact the Mattel Products at Kohl's, for now, match or can be lower than most at other stores. Even so, for anyone in the Kohl's reward program, use the coupons, 25% off/20% off along with $5 off can make a big difference. The Christmas bonus buy ends today, but more than likely, a bigger sale will appear, so no fear. Toys are anywhere from 10% to 40% off and the cookware and select bedding is up to 50% off.
JC Penney's has printable coupons and is offering free shipping on orders $49 or more thru Saturday. The coupons range from $10 to 20% and 25% and an extra 10% on certain products. Codes are available for online shopping. Some great items include the gloves and scarf, coats (50% off), pajamas, and the kid clothes and shoes.
Sears is a store where it is hard not to find a sale, but the better deal may be online for some items such as clothing and jewelry. An extra 20 to 60% can be taken off using the codes on Sear's.com.
Target is just a fun store, period. Toy wise, they are doing BOGO 50% Off! On major brands. 30% off clothing and shoes, also check out the sales rack, kid jeans and pants as low as $10, and many other savings throughout the store.

However, what about online shopping. There are major deals to be found but here are important tips for shopping online:

EBay-do not pay more than you would in a store for an item or gift card. Biding wars get serious, but if a new Blue-Ray ends up being the same price on eBay as it is in the store, besides gas money, there is no need to wait for it to be mailed.
Check shipping costs-always check the shipping, the price may look nice but the cost of shipping might be shocking.
Buy in bulk, especially on sites like Amazon. If able, use their credit line and save a lot on the order, just be sure to pay the card what is owed (I used it, save $70 on a 198 order, turned around and paid the remaining balance on the card). However, be careful, not advising use of it if it makes one feel uncomfortable.
Amazon has cut many prices especially on DVD's.
Retailmenot.com has some fantastic deals at major stores such as Ultra and even online sites like Amazon. Sign up for the emails and get the deals, and check out the site for more coupon codes to use.
Check store and order sites for free shipping codes and for sale codes. There are a bunch of codes for online shopping on store sites, most of the time at the bottom or side of the page. Look for them because they are worth it.

Cranberry Walnut Cheeseball

Although, Hickory Farm's is the king when it comes to Cheeseball, they got nothing on a delicious homemade Cheeseball that will have guests begging for more and for the recipe. This is sweet and savory, goes great with one of the most popular butter crackers of the holidays and super easy to make. No gathering should be without this yummy treat.

Ingredients:

12 oz. Cream Cheese, softened
4-6 oz. Cranberry Pecan Goat Cheese (in special cheese section, price $3.49-5.49, depends on store and sales)
4 oz. Feta Cheese (optional), crumbled
1 1/2 cup Chopped Walnuts, finely chopped in a food processor or blender
Salt and Pepper

Directions:

Let the cream cheese soften on the counter, can be done overnight.
Place the Cream Cheese, Cranberry Pecan Goat Cheese, and Feta into a bowl.
Spray hands with cooking spray, to keep everything from sticking too bad, mix the cheeses together well, add salt and pepper to taste, and form into a ball.
Place the finely chopped walnuts on a plate and roll the ball around until covered in walnuts.
Put the cheeseball back into the preparation bowl, pour remaining nuts over it, cover and store for four hours to overnight.
Before serving, place on a platter or plain white plate with crackers around it.

Not only will this be a hit at a holiday gathering for family and friends, it can be taken to cover dishes at church and work and will more than likely be gone. Merry Christmas Ya'll!!!

Rockefeller Christmas Tree Story/Paper Ornaments

The lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is, perhaps, the most anticipated event of the Christmas season. It is a sign that the season is officially in full swing and decorations began to glow throughout the city. It is a tradition, a tradition with a very humble beginning.

The first tree was nothing like the trees featured now a days. The year was 1931, the depression had hit the country extremely hard, and the tree placed at the center was small with no lights or ornaments. In 1931, construction workers, many most likely thankful for a pay check, were building the famous complex, completed in 1933, and wanted to bring a sense of holiday spirit to the site. More than likely, most of these workers were not adorning their homes with decorations, but decided to spread some cheer by decorating a 20 foot Fir Tree with paper ornaments, strings of cranberries, and tin cans. It might not have been the grandest sight with no lights, no glistening ornaments, but for the workers collecting a pay check, it provided an enormous reminder of thankfulness and joy.

Since 1933, the tree lighting ceremony has been a huge event, minus one year during WWII during a blackout period. Children in the early fifties got to experience the ceremony for the first time on television, those lucky enough to have one, on the famous TV show, Howdy Doody. Stars and musical guests have continued the beloved tradition, and in a way so have many throughout the country.

Children and adults alike continue to make ornaments from paper, tin cans, mason jar lids, Christmas cards, clothes pins, and all sorts of items. The ornaments by themselves may not seem like much to some, but the main ingredient in all these homemade decorations is love and joy. Every single decoration made by a child or adult, be it at school or home, is done so with care and is truly treasured year after year as it is placed on the tree along with collections of others accumulated over the years.

Christmas Glitter Ornaments

Materials:

Colored Construction Paper in blue, green, red, white, purple, and pink
Glitter Glue (pack of 6/priced anywhere from $1.99 to $3. Depending on store)
Red and Green Ribbons, cut to six inches long
Stencils (optional)
Scissors
Hole puncher

Directions:

Just to note: These ornaments can be done free hand without stencils, it is up to the kids and parents.

Pick out what color paper to use and what shape or picture to draw (snowman, Santa Face, Reindeer Face, Star, Poinsettia).
Use a pencil to lightly draw out the pattern, using the stencil.
Draw over the pencil marking with the glitter glue, using different colors for the outline and for other areas of the stencil if desired.
Let dry over night.
Cut around the shape, leaving some edge on the outside, punch a hole in the top of the cutout, put the ribbon through, tie and hang on the tree.

Sweet Potato Casserole with Marshmallows

Marshmallows, brown sugar, 2 large sweet potatoes, some orange juice, and 1/4 cup butter is all that is needed to create a tasty, mouth watering sweet potato casserole that even the kids will love!

Ingredients:

2 Large Sweet Potatoes
1/2 bag of mini marshmallows
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup, plus 2 tablespoons butter
1 Tablespoon Orange Juice

Directions:

Heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Place the sweet potatoes in a small oven dish with 2 Tablespoons butter. Use a knife or fork to create some holes throughout the potatoes. Heat for 1 hour, till skin is able to be pulled off rather easily (can be heated on bottom rack while turkey cooks).
Take the skin off, mash the potatoes and add the orange juice, sugar, and remaining butter. Mix together.
Add 1/4 cup marshmallows and stir together.
Spoon the mix into a baking dish, sprinkle with more brown sugar and top with remaining marshmallows.
Bake 45 minutes until set and marshmallows are slightly browned.

Cranberry Cocktail

This cranberry cocktail is light and delicious and uses beer instead of wine, liquor or champagne. As someone who enjoys cocktails but always feels like they are too sugary and is not a fan of wine or champagne, this holiday concoction is the perfect compromise. Using light beer, light Cranberry juice, and a little bit of freshly squeezed orange juice it is the best drink to sit back and relax with while watching a fun Christmas movie.

Ingredients

8-12 oz. light beer
8 oz. light Cranberry juice
1 teaspoon freshly squeezed orange juice
Orange slice for garnish (optional)

Directions:

Pour the beer into a cup followed by the cranberry juice and orange juice. Stir a bit and place a slice of orange on the glass if desired.

Paper Garland

When the term paper garland comes about, most people may think of the red and green loops connected together to create a chain of garland. However, there are a number of ways to create garland using construction paper, scissors, tape, and ribbon or Christmas colored twine.

Christmas Light Garland

Materials:

1 pack Colored Construction Paper with Yellow, Blue, Red, Green, Purple, Black, and Pink Paper in it
1-2 Rolls of scotch tape or glue or staples and a stapler
1-2 rolls of Christmas colored ribbon or twine
Scissors
Different Colored Glitters (optional)

Directions:

Cut out light bulb shapes using a variety of colors or one specific color (except black). Cut enough to o around the tree.
Cut out 4 inch rectangles from the black and brown papers for each light bulb.
Staple, tape, or paste one end of the black rectangle to the top of each light bulb.
If using glitter and glue, lay on a flat surface with cardboard underneath and draw Christmas shapes, write names, or write Merry Christmas or a message on the bulbs usin the glue and sprinkle glitter on top. Let dry.
Lay the ribbon or string out on the ground and place the lights on it, in desired order, by folding the remaining black rectangle over the ribbon and securing with staple, glue, or tape to the back of the paper bulb.
Wrap around the tree.

This is a really fun project for kids at Christmas, they will literally want to take over, and very good for snow days. Merry Christmas!!!

No Stress Holiday Meal

Easy, Low Stress Holiday Meal

Too often, holiday meals become overly stressful and burdensome. There is no reason, unless eating at 11AM or noon, to get up at 4AM or 5AM and have to start preparing the meal. No reason that everything on the menu has to be homemade and no reason to think that, as the host, every dish that each guest wants should be cooked. Instead of over spending on food, time, and sanity, here is a simple menu and tips for a stress free Holiday meal.

peppermint bark ice cream brownie cake

Turkey:

Instead of buying a whole turkey, get one or two turkey breasts. They cook faster (8-10lbs.=2 to 2 1/2 hours), and happen to be easier to prepare.

Thaw two-three days in advance, wash, dry, take out the heart and gravy packet, butter under and over the skin, salt and pepper, place in a store bought roasting pan and pour 1-2 cans chicken stock on top.
Cook on 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes, then turn to 350 degrees Fahrenheit for the rest of the time till the internal temperature has reached 165-170 degrees.

Ham:

Buy half a ham or a ham in the can. Cook according to package directions (found on whole and half ham labels), in a roasting pan, and pour 2 cans pineapple chunks over the ham, 1/2 cup cherry halves (or whole cranberries), and place about four Gala or Fuji Apples (sliced) around the ham.

Cook the night before, slice, separate the fruits from the ham (place in a bowl and cover). The next day, heat the ham covered with aluminum foil in an oven safe dish on 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 20-30 minutes. Pour the fruit mix on top and serve in the dish.

Stuffing:

Use the box. That's right, boxed stuffing.

Autumn Waldorf Salad

Prepare according to box directions. Add more butter or chicken stock if desired.
If desired, add 1/4 to 1/2 cup whole berry cranberry jelly and 3 Tablespoons finely chopped celery.
Mix, place in a serving bowl and serve.

Green Bean Casserole:

Just use Campbell's recipe, it's a winner, no fuss, no stress, and eating the extra French Onion's is great. Add some cooked chopped bacon if desired.

Corn:

This is iffy. This girl loves corn pudding, sweet southern corn pudding, and my grandma's recipe is great but super difficult and does not always set correctly. So, a few sites, such as Taste of Home and recipes.com have some great ones. Even so, keep it simple, grab some corn n the cob, boil it, serve with butter.

Mashed Potatoes:

Bags of potatoes are usually inexpensive and with butter, pepper, and salt (maybe some milk), can become the side everyone reaches for.

Wash, dry, peel or don't peel
Cut into fours and bring to a boil in a large pot over medium-high heat.
Turn to medium low, heat until softened (15 minutes).
Drain the water.\
Use a potato masher and mash, add 1 stick butter, mash some more.
Add salt, pepper, about 1/4 cup of milk and continue to mash till desired texture is reached.
Add some Gouda, Goat, Italian, Parmesan, or a white sharp cheese, chives for extra flavor. Serve with sour cream.

Ginger Pumpkin Ice Cream Cakes

Pies:

Buy the pie for two reasons:

It is more expensive to bake the pie than it is to buy it, depending on pie brand. Pumpkin filling can cost over $2. Add in the pie crust and whipped cream and the hour cooking time, along with hoping it sets right and buying the already made pie for less than $4.50 seems like a good idea. Two brands that tend to be good, pie wise, Edwards (never had a bad one and they are always on sale at Wal-Mart during the holidays) and Sara Lee.
After cooking everything else, it almost feels like a chore to make a pie, watch it while it cooks, check it, and want for it.

Other items that would be quick to make and worth adding to the menu:

Deviled Eggs
Fruit Salad
Salad with salad dressings
Veggie Platter
Cheese Ball-12 oz. Whipped Cream cheese, 2 cups Shredded Sharp cheddar, 1 Tablespoon Worschestire Sauce, 1/2 Teaspoon Pepper. Set 1 1/2 cups of sharp cheddar aside, spread on a plate. Mix the reaming ingredients together, form into a ball, roll around in the cheese, place in a bowl, wrap and chill over night. Serve with crackers.

Ice Cream Cake-buy a store bought pound cake, cut in half, spread softened ice cream in on the bottom half, put the top back on, spread ice cream on the top half, sprinkle with finely chopped candy. Keep frozen till ready to serve.

Advent Calendar

Advent calendars are a merry way to countdown to Christmas, especially for children. What child does not like to open the little doors on a chocolate filled calendar, only to open every single one of them at once instead of actually on the date listed. Other advent calendars come in the form of, what looks like, a house or church with doors that open with Bible verses or Christmas messages. There are so many available, but instead of purchasing an already made calendar, why not make one with the kids?

Kids love, love, love crafting during the holidays, be in decorations or baking and this advent calendar will not only be crafty but also somewhat a surprise for the children.

Advent Gift Calendar

Materials:

24 Christmas Boxes or jewelry/shoe boxes/red and green boxes, etc, various sizes
2 different kinds of Christmas wrapping paper for those boxes that are not already decorated or Christmas colors
1 bag of bows
Green and Red Construction Paper cut into 24 circles
1 Black Sharpie
Gifts for the box (ornaments, candy, gift certificates)
Double sided tape

Directions:

Number each green and red circle 1-24, alternating colors.
If needed, wrap boxes, lids and bottoms separately. Otherwise, skip this step.
Place the numbers on the boxes, numbering small to large.

The next part is for parents only!

Put gifts inside the boxes. These can be from the dollar store, small Lego toys, ornaments, for those who love cars-matchbox cars, candy, a few $5 gift cards to favorite store, a Christmas wash cloth, hand towel, movie or CD (found very cheap on Amazon), or even hot cocoa packets.
Once gifts are packed, close the box (using tape if needed) and place bow on top or side, depending on how the boxed will be arranged.
Place on a shelf, bookcase, fireplace, or as a centerpiece on the dining table using candle holders to create layer and stacking the boxes in order on top of each other, or do not place bows on them and stack like a Christmas Tree.
Kids can open one a day as they countdown to Christmas.

Along with the treats, add Bible verses or Christmas messages to remind the kids what the season is really about. Merry Christmas!!!
