When I caught wind of Seven Lamps I got REALLY excited. Not only because it boasts some of my favorite restaurant qualities (craft food/drink, regionally inspired cuisine, seasonal ingredients, rustic/farmhouse style decor) but because it in BUCKHEAD. Not because I think it needs Buckhead, but because I think Buckhead needs it. And more restaurants like it.

The 114-seat space has a light color palette and features reclaimed wood from a North Georgia mill to create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Another unique design element is the tranquil patio area which offers outdoor courtyard dining. Equipped with a fire pit, herb garden and Adirondack chairs for lounging, the space is an oasis in the heart of Buckhead.

Seven Lamps is located at 3400 Around Lenox Road in Buckhead’s Shops Around Lenox. The restaurant serves lunch daily from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m and serves dinner from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily. A late night menu is offered from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. For more information, visit www.sevenlampsatl.com.

Now onto the grubness.

My friend Kenny went for the Red Derby, consisting of Bellemeade Bourbon, blood orange, Savannah Bee Co, honey, tarragon | 12.

I went for the Lucy's Candle: Krogstad Aquavit, orchard cherry liqueur, meyer lemon, sparkling wine | 12. Let me tell you something about the drinks at this place - they are not for the faint of heart. If you are expecting a frilly mixed drink where the alcohol is a background singer, you'll want to hold off on the drinks. Now is you prefer your alcohol as the leading singer, completely dominating the stage, then you will enjoy the drinks at Seven Lamps. Very good flavors and very strong flavors.

Next we took turns ordering small plates - everything sounded so good - we decided to truly go for it.

Oh, holy heaven (or whatever you believe in), the savory crepes are divine ($9) - wood grilled tuscan kale, vidalia onion, gruyere gratin, smoked vinaigrette encapsulated in a bowl of melted cheese.

Up next, the mucho heated oysters with b & b pickles, white bread, Duke’s mayonnaise ($8).

Hello, hand cut cottage fries with duke's mayonnaise, espelette (best $4 I've ever spent). These are also the equivalent of crack.

The buttered lobster bun with celery aioli, steamed brioche ($9) was incredibly delicious. The bun was so buttery and pillowy, it literally melted in our mouth.

After splitting our sides, we somehow convinced ourselves that there was room for the main event. I can assure you that after four sides split between two people, ordering a main dish won't be necessary. Nevertheless, the dishes we did order where sensational. Please behold the three cheese sammy with egg and avocado. Creamy, filling and smooth. A really winner!

I ordered the tortellini stuffed with chestnut and marscapone mascarpone with vanilla macaroon, and apple leather. It is a very sweet pasta, almost like a breakfast pasta. Since I am completely addicted to all things sweets, this dish was a great match for me. The elements mascarpone apple, and a vanilla/cinnamon flavor blend nicely together.

All in all the experience was fantastic. Great service, strong drinks, absolutely fantastic food with unique flavor blends and technique. For a restaurant in Buckhead, this was one of the more inviting/authentic experiences I've had in a long time. A refuge, really. Check it out when you get the chance!

I finally got to see my first Cirque du Soleil performance! My fiance and I went last Sunday - and let me tell you, I think we are both hooked. I know I don't have other Cirque experiences to compare this one to, but I'll do my best to review the show for you nonetheless!

I've always wondered about the whimsy that existed under that massive blue and yellow tent at Atlantic Station as I've passed it year in and year out, driving up and down the interstate.

TOTEM, written and directed by Robert Lepage, traces the journey of the human species from its original amphibian state to its ultimate desire to fly. The characters evolve on a stage evoking a giant turtle, the symbol of origin for many ancient civilizations. Inspired by many founding myths, TOTEM illustrates, through a visual and acrobatic language, the evolutionary progress of species. Somewhere between science and legend TOTEM explores the ties that bind Man to other species, his dreams and his infinite potential.

The show opens up with the giant turtle at center stage, representing the origins of life on Earth. The shell is whisked away to reveal a community of amphibians and fish that live beneath it. They burst into a playful parallel bars number, with artists launching themselves into the air.

In between acts, Cirque's version of "clowns" entertain the crowd, drawing authentic laughs. The next big act that I loved was the Bollywood-inspired music accompanied with two men as they compete against each other on the rings, until a woman arrives and shows them how it’s done. Their graceful movements, sheer physical strength and superb physiques is astounding!

My next favorite act was when 10 businessmen executed a number requires extreme strength. The performers held long metal polls while one of the guys climbs almost to the peak of the big top.

Another one of my favorite acts involved five unicyclists juggling metal bowls in a display of agility, balance, synchronized control and physical grace, tossing the bowls with their feet and catching them on their heads without using their hands. All while maintaining their balance on the unicycles! The ooo's and ahhh's coming from the crowd came on point and in unison.

The next two acts that I'll describe were my absolute favorites. Two lovebirds, a young man and woman perform very impressive lifts in a light-hearted vertical dance on the trapeze.

Next, in a scene that evokes a wedding ceremony, a pair of roller skaters spins and whirls at heart-stopping speeds atop a tiny platform—in a diameter—shaped like a drum.

There is honestly not a bad seat in the house - Cirque keeps the seating limited, creating a much more intimate feel. Just like any entertainment event, concessions are expensive - but I did appreciate them bringing pop-up concessions into the main area of the tent for those who didn't want to battle the crowds in the main lines during intermission.

My only complaint is that without knowing the theme of the show, the storyline did not seem to flow as seamlessly as it could have. But beyond that small thing, everything was dazzling and spectacular. The ambient lighting really added another layer of depth to the performances which were astonishing at the very least. The mere amount of strength, precision, creativity and performance caliber was unmatched to anything I've ever seen.

It made for a great date night and we thoroughly enjoyed the show. Everyone was so nice, the process was smooth and seamless. We chatted afterwards about how we want to see what else they can come up with - now official Cirque fans!

One recommendation - make sure you get there at least 30 minutes before the show. If you are late, you will have to wait to be seated until there is an appropriate break in the performances. There will also be signs pointing you to specific Cirque parking - which will get you closer to the tent, but have you waiting in line much longer. To avoid parking lines, just head on over to regular Atlantic Station parking and make the walk to the tent.

Hallelujah! Finally, some culinary excitement in the Ansley Mall area of Midtown! Words couldn’t explain my disappointment when one of my favorite Atlanta restaurants, Shaun’s closed its doors. Best pork schnitzel I’ve ever had. So when I heard that Chef Shaun Doty (Shaun’s, Yeah! Burger) was going to join forces with Lance Gummere on a fast-casual chicken emporium concept, I was stoked. Not only does Bantam & Biddy deliver chicken done right, it also delivers on it’s promise of regional, organic and largely gluten-free options.

My friend Jessica and I briefly talked to Shaun and he told us that he was aching to pair the fast-casual concept with the ability to still bring the chef-driven inspirations to the table. Shaun is also very excited about the location of his new effort, mentioning that the clientele in the area have been clamoring for something like B&B in the neighborhood. Feast your eyes on the goodness below and apologies in advance for making you insatiably hungry.

Did I mention their scrum-diddly-umptious cocktail menu that largely falls under a $7 price point?

You order your food at the front, and they bring the food to your table.

We started off things right with the Wings from the Snacks + Soup section. These Asian-infused wings were gobbled up in seconds and easily some of the best wings I've ever had. The spicy recipe is mixed with peanuts and a pickled cucumber salad. You need to try these. Trust me.

I know this is primarily a chicken emporium. There are, however, a few non-chicken dishes on the menu (including some great salads and vegetarian options). The Pork Schnitzel at Shaun's was my jam, so imagine my excitement when I saw it on the menu. Perfectly cooked in a buttery, lemon-y crust, it is served with an onion salad, peanuts and parsley on top. Drooling just thinking about it.

My friend went with the Carolina Chicken, served with pickled beets and goat cheese, and a side of sauteed broccolini and garlic. She loved every bite, thought suffice to say, her absolute favorite was also the wing appetizer. She also ordered one of the homemade sauces, the Blue Ridge BBQ, to dip the tender, juicy chicken into.

Bantam and Biddy also has a dessert bar, full of a plethora of mini pies and cakes. We went with the lemon meringue and chocolate. I am embarrassed to admit, that after all of that food, we still managed to scarf these down with ease.

B&B has everything you could possibly want in a fast-casual restaurant. Affordable, delectable cocktails, mini desserts that don't totally make you feel guilty, a plethora of gluten-free, organic menu options that cater to both the chicken lover and the vegetation lover. You usually don't think "gourmet" when you hear the word fast, but at B&B, you get it all. I'm just happy I have a good excuse now for visiting my Midtown friends a little bit more often!

Mexican Coke Float from El Taco

My Dad worked for Coca-Cola for almost 30 years. So naturally, it was virtually a sin to utter the word Pepsi in our house, let alone drink it. Growing up in Atlanta, the city of Coca-Cola, was pretty awesome as a kid. Getting to sample all of the different flavor types the company was trying out before it hit the shelves was about as cool as it got. One year I combined a bunch of different Coca-Cola products into one drink and was convinced it was going to be the next biggest soda. My dad even humored me and said that he shared the idea with all of his co-workers who also “loved” it and thought it was a “great idea.” So each time something major happens with the company or they use their home turf as their test market for something, I get super amped.

You may have seen some futuristic-looking soda fountains in and around Atlanta lately (or perhaps for a few years in the case of Firehouse Subs) emblazoned with that telltale logo. These machines are called the Coca-Cola Freestyle machines and Atlanta is the first city to have them. Each freestyle machine has a full-color touch screen that allows you to choose over 100+ different brands, including flavors and sodas not available anywhere else. Believe me when I say, there is literally something for everyone. Soda, energy drinks, flavored waters, juices, you name it. You can also combine flavors! The machines are starting to pop up increasingly at restaurant chains around the city and even in some movie theaters. The AMC on Cobb Parkway has an army of them. Firehouse Subs is one of the restaurant chains in the area that has Coca-Cola Freestyle.

The way it works is pretty easy. Order the size you want when you are placing your order at the counter. There is no need to specify what drink you want since you will be concocting your creation yourself!

Freestyle cups give you an idea of the different flavors available for your favorite bubbles and non-bubbles. Peach Sprite anyone? I haven't tried it yet, but I love the idea of it.

Next, all you do is press the cup against the ice dispenser to get your ice. (Or not, if ice is not your thing). Position your cup right below the soda dispenser before shifting gears to the incredibly awesome touchscreen.

Did you ever think we'd get to the Jetsons point of touchscreen for our soda vending machines? Select the circle flavor you'd like. Me, I'm a Pepper. So I selected me some DP.

Hello awkward photo (side note). So once you select your "master" drink if you will, you select your sub-flavor to go along with it next if you wish. For example, if you selected Dr. Pepper on the first screen, you can just select it again on the next to get plain old Dr. Pepper. If you feel like living a little, this is the screen where you can have some fun. In my case, I love me some Dr. Pepper Cherry, so I selected the black circle for my drink.

And voila! There you have it! It is like that cool part of the Coca-Cola museum where you can sample every amazing flavor of Coca-Cola products ever made, minus the part where it flies into your cup from across the room (maybe that is phase two?). Located in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, Ammazza offers a locally driven dinner menu of authentic Italian cuisine. Italian slang for expressing astonishment or admiration, “Ammazza” is exactly what the Connerty brothers plan to achieve through their classic Italian cooking methods and by using essential ingredients found only in Italy as well as local, fresh finds. In addition to incredible Neapolitan-style pizzas, Ammazza’s menu also includes an array of Italian street food-inspired dishes.

I genuinely love everything about this place. From the design on the website, to the type face of the restaurant facade, to the all-natural soda choices, and the industrial-style metal plates that I must somehow obtain, this place delivers a cool and delicious experience soup to nuts. It reminds me of a hipster, O4W version of Antico pizza.

The layout of the restaurant is stationed. Entrez-vous to the counter where you can place your order. Grab a number and then round the corner to find the family style communal dining table in the center surrounded by an array of tables and booths. Seat yourself and then head to the tableware station to grab your plate, cutlery and water.

The tables at Ammazza are made out of repurposed wood from an old cotton mill down in Cartersville.

I also love that you can peer into the wood-fire oven pizza's being hand-tossed!

I'd never had alcoholic ginger beer before. Squeeze a lemon or lime into it and you have a very fall-appropriate, refreshing, cider-like libation that is perfect pairing with a carb-a-thon.

We started with the Classico, which is what is sounds like, a classic offering of Italian meats and cheeses. A word to the wise - the entrees here are massive and meant for sharing.

Said industrial metal plate as mentioned above. In love.

Massive entree numero uno (side note: notice how I've written both Spanish and French in this blog post and not Italian.) This is the pizza Contadino, which should feed between 2-4 people depending on how hungry everyone is. This white pizza consists of roma tomatoes, roasted artichokes, wild mushrooms, olives and onions topped with house mozzarella, basil and extra virgin olive oil. It was deliciously hearty and evident how authentic/fresh the ingredients are.

Massive entre numero dos is a Naples street food favorite, the Semplice. House-made dough stuffed full of house mozzarella, flor di latte, ricotta and basil, fried to golden perfection.

As if we weren't dangerously full after appetizers and our main dishes, we pushed the boundaries with the Torta Caprese, flourless chocolate almond cake from the isle of Capri topped with homemade chocolate ganache and of course, a few cannolis (crisp pastry shells stuffed to order with sweetened ricotta cheese). A gamble that paid off in immense satisfaction!

As if all of this wasn't enough to put Ammazza in the resto rotation, it is open until midnight Sunday through Thursday and open until 2 am Friday and Saturday night. And yes, that means they serve food until they close. Win, win, win!

The @pinewoodtr delivers southern charm with flair

Decatur-based The Pinewood draws inspiration from locally sourced and inspired ingredients with a twist. Every ounce of the food and drink churned out of the kitchen is handmade. The restaurant prides itself on its neighborhood-friendly-hangout ambiance with a sophisticated twist.

Once my friend Tony and I arrived to the restaurant, upon the encouragement of our extremely kind and warm server, the drink menu pulled us in. Tony ordered the "Day That I Die" (pictured above - excuse my lighting issues) - Bulleit Rye Whiskey, Fresh Lemon, Ginger Syrup, Buckwheat Honey Syrup & Roasted Georgia Pecan Tincture. This libation soared and soaked you to the bone at the same time. The strong, prominent taste of the whiskey blended nicely with the sweetness and bitterness of its supporting characters.

The cocktails at The Pinewood are impressive. In fact, they just launched a new cocktail menu. All of the classic cocktails are priced at $7.50 each, including favorites such as the Moscow Mule and Whiskey Sour. The seasonal drinks range in price from $6-$11. Some of the recent fall additions include:

Autumn Rivulets: Redstone Hopped honey wine, Rothman & Winter orchard pear, Yellow Chartreuse and basil granita ($9.50)
Padre Thyme: Laird’s bonded apple brandy, apple cider, El Jimador Reposado, honey, thyme, cardamom tincture and fresh lemon ($9.50)
Brom Bones Fizz: Bacardi Solera rum, Cardamaro, pumpkin, white balsamic, house-made ginger soda and sage ($9.50)

Onward to the appetizer! Fried green tomatoes with the most delectable remoulade I've ever come into contact with. We all know the remoulade can make or break a fried green tomato. Two thumbs up.

And it keeps.getting.better. I could not resist the Crunchy Buttermilk Chicken calling my name from the menu. Ritz cracker and Panko crusted chicken served over potato hash. The chicken could not have been cooked more perfectly. Imagine your Grandma's secret recipe for fried chicken and then take that up a few notches. But less us forget the heavenly bed of hash below it. Heaven. Pure heaven.

The grand finale culminated in the chocolate jar, consisting of chocolate custard with whipped cream and five spice. The presentation of this dish was front-porch charming, served out of a mason jar.

All in all I can say with confidence that I recommend The Pinewood for those seeking a creative twist on locally inspired southern classics. If you are interested in checking out The Pinewood, the restaurant is offering five new food and drink promotions, Sunday through Thursday night:

Our beloved Bravos are play-off bound, very fitting as future hall-of-famer Chipper Jones' storied career approaches its final days. Having grown up watching the Braves since I was a wee tot (Fulton County Stadium/Sim Bream slide-heard-round-the-world days), moments in Braves history like this make me feel nostalgic, and proud to be a true Braves fan.

John Pfaender, owner of online store Chop Shop Tees, and his fiance can certainly echo the sentiment. Pfaender has been in the apparel industry for some time, designing and printing t-shirts for numerous clients and retail stores. A frequent Ted visitor (his fiance is a die-hard Braves fan), Pfaender and his good friend Matt Reynolds thought it would be a great idea to generate some quality products to commemorate Chipper's last year of baseball. Thus, Chop Shop Tees was born. Since the launch of the site, 100% of traffic and sales generated so far, has come through social media.

Atlanta’s only true German beer garden is gearing up for Oktoberfest, the annual 16-day festival traditionally held in Munich, Germany running from late September to the first weekend in October. DerBiergarten’s “Munich on Marietta Street” Oktoberfest celebration will feature authentic German food and beer, festive décor and live entertainment along with special events added this year including a Brat Eating Contest with professional eater Grace Lee and a “Barks & Beer” night for pups on the patio.

Der Biergarten is German owned and operated with more German draft beer than anywhere else in the Southeast with 20 selections on tap.

AFOMFT Review: @7Hens, Decatur's new chicken schnitzel resto

I was really excited when Seven Hens, Decatur's newest fast casual restaurant (with a unique twist) invited me to come check out their digs and show me how to schnitzel. I got to meet owner Michael Gurevich, an Israeli residing in Atlanta, who knew he had to carve out a new space in the Atlanta food scene when he opening Seven Hens. Gurevich wanted to take this street food staple from his culture, marry it with the best flavors from different countries, and serve it up to Atlantans in a style that speaks to the heart of Georgians across the land - frieeeeddd chicken.

If you haven't had the opportunity to try a schnitzel before (your welcome in advance for the enlightenment), let me explain what it is. Schnitzel is a traditional Austrian dish made by pounding and tenderizing boneless meat until it’s thin, coating it in bread crumbs, and then frying it. Although its exact origins are uncertain, schnitzel has been adapted and adopted throughout the World’s many cultures.

Step 1: My friend Tony and I pounding and tenderizing the boneless meat.

Step 2: Coat the chicken breast with flour. Dip it in an egg-based batter and coat it with breadcrumbs. The breadcrumbs will vary depending on what schnitzel you order.

Step 3: The coated breast is then quickly fried (about a minute) to create a moist, tender chicken breast encrusted in a crispy, seasoned shell.

Step 4: The chicken is sliced into strips using Seven Hens' signature Mezzaluna knife in a performance-like manner.

Guests are then asked to pick which country schnitzel they would like the chicken to be seasoned with (American, Mexican, Italian, French, Chinese, Indian or build-your-own) and how they would like it served up (on a baguette, in a wrap, a salad, or as a platter with two sides). Guests can also finish off the process by adding an array of house-made dressings, spreads, sauces and topping inspired by world cuisine.

Seven Hens is also dedicated to quality ingredients - they use trans-fat free oil, fresh produce, local/all-natural chicken, and the baguettes are baked fresh at a local bakery.

Tony and I got to make both the American (Cajun-style breadcrumbs, BBQ sauce, tomato, lettuce, onion, classic American coleslaw) and the Chinese (Traditional sesame-seasoned panko, Chinese mayo, teriyaki glaze, lettuce, tomato, onion). Let me tell you folks, this is not your run-of-the-mill sammy shop. I think the concept is genius. Both the American and Chinese were spot on with their flavors and frankly put most of the fast casual sammy places in Atlanta to shame. Once you go schnitzel, you never go back. My only complaint was the sides - I wish there were more options. Other than that, I had no complaints and urge you to go check this place out. I left the restaurant begging the owner to open up shop near my workplace in Duluth so that I can enjoy these delectable schnitzel sammies (worry not for those of you who don't do chicken or fried - they have tofu and grilled chicken options as well!) on a daily basis.

Seven Hens is a concept through-and-through and every detail of the restaurant has had great thought behind it (from the menu, to the decor, to the website, to the name). Did I mention they sell King of Pops?

I, for one, would jump at the chance to sit in on a cooking class with this aussie cutie chef/host from The Biggest Loser, Top Chef Masters and Around The World in 80 Plates, if I didn't have plans already! For those of you who are looking to shake up their Saturday evening with something a little different, read on.

The Cook's Warehouse in Midtown still has seats available for the "Kitchen Solutions from Curtis Stone" cooking class from 7-8 PM on Saturday, July 14. Cost is $45 a person. Below is the description of the class on the Cook's Warehouse website:

"Meet one of the hottest chefs on the culinary scene - Chef Curtis Stone - as he unveils his new cookware line for you! But this is no ordinary cooking demo - Curtis will entertain as he solicits audience participation to create several recipes. He'll share his insight on what tools are essential as he "shakes" and "grinds" his way around the kitchen. Along the way, he'll give away culinary prizes as he talks about the kitchen dilemmas that he faced as a professional chef - dilemmas which led him to design his line of “Kitchen Solutions”. This line of kitchen products was developed by Curtis to tackle common challenges faced by anyone who spends time in the kitchen. From the “Go with the Flow” dripless oil can to the “Bump and Grind” mortar and pestle, these products are designed to make cooking less stressful and more enjoyable. (please note that while there may be limited samples of the food prepared by Curtis, we will not be able to sample all recipes to all guests.) Starting off the evening right with a little chips and queso. The queso is still one of my favorites in the city as are the chips, which are sprinkled with a special seasoning that keeps the chips on rotation all night long.

Had to enjoy the summer perfect patio weather by kicking of the evening with one of Tin Lizzy's newest margaritas, the Beach House - 1800 Coconut, orange liqueur, sour mix and lime wedge. I ordered mine low calorie (I believe this is a new option from TL as well - all of their margaritas can be made low calorie by switching out the margarita mix) and was pleased with a refreshing, strong drink.

Next up on the list was the , the Sangrita - tequila, sangria, orange liqueur, sour mix and lime wedge. My favorite of the evening.

For dinner came three different tacos. From left to right. Grilled shrimp taco, Korean BBQ pork taco (pulled pork with Asian slaw and spicy chili salsa) which was my favorite, and the Buffalo Shrimp taco (fried shrimp, buffalo sauce, lettuce and blue cheese), another solid choice. Tin Lizzy's will forever be top of my list for happy hour, lunch or that go to place where you want to kick back with friends and enjoy some good food and drinks.

Tin Lizzy's Cantina opened its fourth location in Atlanta’s Perimeter area on June 22^nd at 121 Perimeter Center West, which is directly across from Perimeter Mall and just west of Ashford Dunwoody Road. I had a blast at the Briza Restaurant summer menu blogger party! Thrilled to clink glasses and nom delectable food with my fellow foodies. Briza Restaurant occupies the space formally lived in by Pacci, one resto that I was very, very sad to see go. I had very high hopes for the new resident since my favorite Atlanta Italian restaurant was ousted due to change in ownership for the adjacent hotel.

Briza serves farm-to-table fare with Southern flair. Executive Chef Janine Falvo’s seasonal cuisine is made from locally sourced ingredients.

Executive Chef Janine Falvo’s passion for food stems from a family deeply rooted in culinary tradition. Falvo was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where her childhood was filled with memories of berry picking, seasonal harvest canning and celebratory holiday feasts. After years of showcasing her culinary prowess to her family and friends at such gatherings, Falvo decided to hone her skills and make a career out of her lifelong passion.

Falvo’s culinary savvy has earned her recognition as Restaurant Hospitality’s Rising Star Chef in 2007. In 2010, she was selected to represent Sonoma in a dinner at the James Beard House in New York City and was a featured chef in Food Arts’ bi-annual menu preview. In 2011, Falvo appeared as a hopeful on the ninth season of Bravo’s popular series “Top Chef.”

I had the pleasure of sampling dishes from Briza's new summer menu and can't wait to share the dish details with you.

We started out the dinner with an amuse bouche consisting of a beau soleil oyster, and green tomato-black pepper mignonette. Paired with iron horse “russian cuvee”, green valley ‘04 (let me tell you, these pairing were SPOT ON). This oyster made the perfect first bite, seasoned beautifully and awakening the palette.

The first course was heirloom tomatoes served with burrata cheese, watermelon, and gazpacho water paired the iron horse as well. The small seeds you see on the plate are basil seeds that bring forward a bit of that basil flavor while adding some texture to the dish. This dish blew me away. The burrata was so incredibly creamy and the flavors mixed so well together. I could substitute this for my Yoforia on any given hot Atlanta evening. So refreshing.

The next course was the artisan foie gras served like a fried pies with a strawberry-rhubarb compote. Paired with castillo de monseran garnacha, carinena d.o. ‘09 (my favorite wine of the evening). This dish was inspired by Chef's Sonoma days. I love the combination of savory/sweet and the playful display of the foie gras.

Next up was the Alaskan halibut served with lobster home fries, truffled hollandaise and paired with the buena vista pinot noir, carneros ‘09. A very summery fish - nice and light, fluffy and creamy.

The 48 hour short rib was a big hit among the crowd. Served with vidalia onion puree, rattlesnake beans, and stone fruit watercress salad, the meat was braised with cherries and apricots and sous-vide for 48 hours. Paired with joseph carr merlot, carneros ‘09 .

Rounding out this refreshingly delightful dinner was the sour cream pound cake served with grilled Georgia peaches, spicy peanut brittle and peach sorbet. Paired with paolo saracco moscato d’asti, piedmonte d.o.c.g. Amazing. Just simply amazing. A perfect salute to the peach state, the moscato was paired wonderfully.

AFOMFT Review: Get to the @TheOptimistATL...and fast!

I was gleefully happy for the opening of Ford Fry's Westside seafood and oyster house, The Optimist, so when the opportunity presented itself to try out the food, I was dragging my fiancee out of the door before he even knew what was happening. The Optimist’s menu offers guests sustainable seafood of superior quality. Fresh catch comes into the kitchen daily and is prepared with a simple touch that highlights the restaurant’s wood-burning oven and grills. The menu is a combination of Chef Evans’ boyhood fish camp days with a touch of modern flare to match today’s palates.

The restaurant is divided into two sections, the main dining section and the adjacent Oyster Bar at The Optimist, and is a more casual “fish camp” style venue featuring a raw bar and an outdoor patio with a two-hole putt-putt golf course.The atmosphere definitely screams modern, fish house and sustainability - a combination of wood and steel, big open space and clean lines.

When I heard The Optimist Beverage Director (Lara Creasy), had developed a beverage program with selections she carefully chose to complement the menu, I knew that getting a cocktail was a necessary part of the experience. The wines hail from coastal regions around the world and the bar’s micro-brewed beers are from America’s port-city breweries.

I ordered a signature cocktail, The Beach Shanty - Allagash White (one of my favorite summer beers), Brinley's Shipwreck spiced rum, lemon and ginger liqueur. It was a refreshing, citrus-y, bite that paired perfectly with the peel-n-eat shrimp appetizer we ordered.

For the appetizer, we ordered the peel & eat GA white shrimp, “come back” sauce & lemon / $11 per 1/2 lb. I don't know what entailed the "come back" sauce, but it tasted like your typical tartar sauce with a bit of dill mixed in. The shrimp had an Old Bay type seasoning on it and the combination of it all was just divine. I could have easily devoured another 1/2 lb.

The fiancee ordered the skirt steak, with romesco sauce, and beef jus / $24. He said the components of the dish mixed together made for a very solid main entree offering. But my man has had many of steak, and while extremely good, we decided it was the seafood that really, really shined. We recommend sticking surf, maybe not so much turf. But solid option for your any of your non-seafood-eating-friends that you may have to drag with you to this place (ASAP).

Okay, so our waitress recommend that we order a side dish to split. All of the sides are $6 and are pretty sizable (the entrees don't automatically come with a side, you need to order the sides a la carte). I balked when Lee suggested we go for the potato gnocchi, lobster butter, and corn side. Why Italian at a Seafood restaurant? I can't even begin to describe the party that happened inside of my mouth the moment I took a bite. The best gnocchi I've had in Atlanta bar none. The pilow-y, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth pockets of goodness where so amazing - I didn't want it to end. It must have been the lobster butter. I'm not sharing next time, even if it means I have to run an extra half marathon that day to burn the calories.

For the main event, I went for the wood roasted soft shell crab with pickled ramps and garlic broth / $26. Holy garlic, buttery, sweet, goodness. It was my first time having a roasted soft shell crab and let me say, it was marvelous. Crunchy skin, smokiness from the wood fire, mixed with the garlic broth and sweetness of the ramps = sensory overload in the best way possible. I literally can't stop thinking about this meal.

Just when I thought it couldn't possibly get any better, entre les doughnuts. Let me clarify, these are BUTTERMILK DONUTS with powdered sugar, that taste more like cake then doughnuts. Served with sweet corn ice cream and hot pepper jam / $6.

All in all - a great happy hour spot for those that want to stay on the Oyster Bar side and get some appetizers/seafood on ice and putt the ball around the green. As for a nice dinner, absolutely worth the money. Great atmosphere, best seafood in town, and super great service. Very friendly wait staff. I want to go back tomorrow!

Hey friends, I've got an incredibly cool story to share with you. This Saturday, June 9 at 12 PM marks the grand return of the Red Bull Soap Box Derby at Piedmont Park. Although there is a smattering of local teams gathering and racing, this team in particular has a very positive message and interesting approach to working on their soap box car (and I'm not just saying that because I've done some consulting for the Atlanta Mission - full disclosure).

BeRemedy, a local organization that uses social media to connect those in need with those in their community who can help has partnered with the Atlanta Mission, a non-for-profit that has been transforming lives who face homelessness since 1938. BeRemedy is working with some of the men at Atlanta Mission's Potter's House, which offers a long-term residential discipleship program to more than 180 chemically addicted men. Located on a 550+ acre farm near Athens, Georgia, The Potter’s House offers therapeutic and vocational programming, providing services that include GED training, computer literacy, and job training. These men have been helping with the construction of the BeRemedy Red Bull Soap Box car. The Atlanta Food Truck Park & Market is the first permanent food truck site in Atlanta offering food trucks to the community and visitors 7 days a week for lunch and dinner! There will also be a weekend farmers market, live music and artist farm.

Tomorrow, starting at 5 PM, the Grand Opening will have a Kid's Fun Zone, live music by Jamal Hafza and Doug Pall, Bocce Ball, Corn Hole, a picnic area & more.

When Music Midtown made a small resurgence last year I was thrilled, yet skeptical at the same time. I've been going to the real-deal, three-day, six stage musical blowout since I was in middle school. My very first concert was the Foo Fighters at MM in the 6th grade (oh how things come full circle with Foo headlining this year's line-up!) With a new location in Piedmont Park and a one-day only line-up, I decided to sideline and see what the verdict was from those who attended. Everyone had nothing but good things to say - Piedmont was the perfect venue for it, not too overcrowded, could hear the music nice and clearly, well put-on and most of all - MEMORABLE.

Imagine my complete and utter excitement when MM announces it is moving to a two-day festival back at Piedmont with an absolute KILLER line-up! PEARL JAM is at the very top of my list of concerts to go to before I die. And the AJC reports that Music Midtown will be the only live concert the band will perform in 2012. Like.a.giddy.school.girl.

I love this idea. Anytime a business owner involves the community in it's establishment in some capacity - I feel like it is something worth sharing. I also can't wait to try this out - Seafood is one of my favorite types of food and I am always excited to hear when a newbie resto comes onto the scene.

The Optimist and The Oyster Bar at The Optimist, Ford Fry’s highly anticipated seafood restaurant and oyster bar located on Atlanta’s west side, is asking future patrons to be a part of the restaurant’s oceanic culture. The soon-to-open eatery is looking for images of guests enjoying fun in the sun and the sea. Suitable photos include any image portraying surfside fun, from fishing, surfing and other water sports to playing in the sand and relaxing with family and friends on the beach.

Over the coming weeks, the restaurant’s designer, Smith Hanes, will be creating storyboards using these photos and will hang them on a wall in The Optimist to be a permanent part of the restaurant’s décor. I wanted to fill you guys in on the Prohibition-themed parties Atkins Park Tavern in Virginia-Highland is throwing in the next few weeks. The staff will be dressed in Prohibition-era attire as well. Atkins Park will also show old 1920s movies and Boardwalk Empire on all televisions throughout the restaurant, and a Photobooth will be set up in the upstairs private dining room so guests can get their photos taken with 1920s props. The Photobooth will be sponsored by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), and each $5 photo donation will be donated to the 2012 Georgia Chain Gang and the team’s endurance Race Across America for LLS.
