Yes, it is right at the door.

I'm really excited this year to see the amazing progress with Revit MEP 2013, Revit MEP 2012 was a breakthrough in the product life cycle and 2013 is coming faster, smarter and more features coming under the hat.

MEP products are going to turn heads around this year and Engineers will find lot of value to combine more than one product in the same project. BIM is going to be bigger this year in the MEP industry and bigger and smaller projects will benefit from this progress.

Creating Multiple Sheets in Revit

I can create multiple sheets in Revit by first creating a sheet list schedule and type the name and number for each sheet, second I click on new sheet and I select the placeholder sheets I want to create in the New Sheet Window. That will create all the sheets in one step

Navisworks API Plugins

While the focus is more on Revit API and creating Add ins to Revit, I found that Navisworks API is open to add Plugins
Navisworks installation comes with some .net examples that I compiled and I added the .DLL files to the plugins folder

Metric or Imperial Units

As most of international projects use both units, Revit also allows us to do the same without using different Metric and Imperial templates.

I'm working on Metric job now, but most of the manufactures send us their equipment in Imperial units
I used the same numbers in the manufacture catalog in Imperial units and I added the symbol of the imperial unit as Revit has under project units and Revit converted the values automatically in the metric project

But to get this to work, I have to use the same unit symbol has for every unit

Creating Filters using Shared Parameters and turn them on and off like Layers

Here are the steps that you can create filters for all the objects and have them available in the properties pallete and also turn them on and off like CAD Layers

1. Under the manage tab click on shared parameters and create 3 parameters :
• M-HVAC-Supply-New
• M-HVAC-Supply-Existing
• M-HVAC-Supply-Demolish
2. In the parameters properties window change the parameter type to Yes/No
3. Click on project parameters and click on Add, change the type to shared and select the above shared parameters one in a time
4. Change the group parameters under to layers and click on check all
5. Under the view tab click on filters
6. Create new filters using the same layers names and click on check all and select the parameter from the filter rules list
7. Add the different filters in the VG window to a view
8. Change the color and the line type to each filter
9. in your view select the ducts and click on the check box for each filter to turn the filter on
10. you can change the duct display based on the layer

It seems that we will have a way to create Details and Schedules a lot faster in Revit, these tools are very promising and I wonder if Autodesk will consider some of these tools in the future releases

I used different filters in a 3D views and I was able to present the duct work for each HVAC system separately in different color

This is a very good way that allows me to visualize duct construction while I design HVAC systems on floor plans

Shared Parameters Convertor

In a Previous post, I wrote about mapping family parameters to schedules using shared parameters.

Revit 2011 subscription extension tools has a new tool which will help to achieve that process, the tool creates new rfa files after adding the shared parameters you previously create to use with your projects

So for Example, I will use the same example in my previous post, let say that I want to have custom Hot Water Flow parameter in my WSHP schedule and the heat pump folder has about 20 families

I will start by creating the shared parameter, then I will use the shared parameter conversion new tool and I will use the heat pump folder as my source folder, then I will create another destination folder for heat pumps and of course I will use the same text file of the created shared parameter , the tool will create new families after adding the shared parameters in my text file, then I will open the new rfa files and use the formula to map the custom shared parameter to the existing family parameter, when loading any of the new families to my projects I will find the shared parameter available to add to my WSHP schedule

Using Revit MEP schedules in HVAC balancing

do you know that you can create logical formulas with conditional formating in Revit MEP schedules?

With the calculated values in schedules, I can create a balancing schedule to check the diffrence between calculated CFM and the actual CFM in each space

unites, I would like to thank the MEP team in AECOM at Roanoke, Virginia about the challenge

Revit has project unites window where you can control the different parameters unites based on discipline, I created a custom tag which shows the air flow in both unites

Mapping Parameters in Schedules

When you create Mechanical Schedules in Revit MEP for instance, the Schedule properties dialog window shows only some of the parameters associated with the family but the Schedule Fields window does not show all the parameters associated with the element or the family type

so for instance I have a WSHP Element and I want to include specific Parameters for that equipment in my schedule like Hot Water Flow, so I go to the family editor and I create a shared parameter matching the required element parameter, then in the types properties window I can create a Formula to map the required parameter, so when I upload that to my project I can add that shared parameter in my schedule

There are two important features in Revit MEP 2010.

Justification editor allows you to align the multiple duct segments with different sizes in the plenum space to the bottom face for example

Routing Solutions allows you to route the duct to go above or below obstacles

One of the Extensions that you can add to Revit MEP from Autodesk subscribtion is RDB link, this extension exports the Model and the families data to an external Database

You can export it to Excel, Access and SQL server then you can edit the info and import the data back to reflect on your model

Space Naming utility
