Are you an adventurer? Do you have the spirit of a wanderer? If so, then the hottest new trend in vacation travel, a motorcycle vacation, may be just the ticket for you. Whatever countryside you enjoy, and whatever bike you ride, a motorcycle vacation promises great fun and entertainment.

Imagine a history buff that uses a motorcycle to explore old Civil War battlefields. Wilson's Creek in southwest Missouri, Pea Ridge in Northwest Arkansas, and the site of the battle of West Port near the Plaza in modern day Kansas City are all easily accessible by bike. Or, if exploring the west is more your thing, take a trek out west, starting in Sedalia, the scene of the first recorded cattle drive in history. Then on your bike trace the other cattle towns of the old west like Wichita, Parsons and Dodge City in Kansas. Then keep heading west to Colorado the mile high state and visit Estes Park. Go a little south and visit Colorado Springs, park your bike for a day and take a tour of the Air Force Academy and look at the grounds of Cheyenne Mountain, home of Norad.

Still yearning for more western adventure, then you can ride your motorcycle to New Mexico and visit Lincoln County where Billy the Kid and his Regulators raised a ruckus in the 1880's. New Mexico has great camping in the mountains near Cloudcroft, so be sure to take the opportunity to visit and if you feel up to it, sleep under the stars, with your trusty motorcycle near you, like a cowboy's horse.

While in New Mexico the Apache reservation at Riodosa offers a chance to try your luck at slot machines and the wheel of fortune. Then a visit to a great Mexican restaurant and on to the town of Roswell, site of the 1947 UFO crash that some people say made history. When you get to Roswell you can either take your bike to a campground, or park it at a nice reasonably priced motor hotel so that you can spend some time in the UFO Museum and Research Center on Main Street. While there you can visit with some witnesses to the crash and hear some fascinating stories, and take a side trip out to the ranch outside of town where debris was found, and some say small alien bodies were recovered. When you've seen all the UFO sites you feel like seeing, you can visit the Robert Goddard Museum next door to the Town's convention center. Goddard is the father of modern rocket science. He performed many of his experiments in the desert near Roswell and the museum is great fun. When you get done in Roswell, then hop on the bike and go to Albuquerque near Holloman Air Force Base, and then on down to White Sands rocket test ground. New Mexico is full of interesting sites. If you head up north, be sure to his Santa Fe and appreciate the Native American arts and crafts on display.
Next stop on your bike tour should be Las Vegas, Nevada. The most exciting town on earth is just a hop, skip and bike ride away. Here's a chance to really gamble, or if you don't like to bet, then just stop in at one of the casinos to try a very low priced, delicious buffet. It seems like all the casinos have great buffets and try to outdo each other. You'll enjoy them all. Remember too that this is a town made for entertainment. Try one of the shows on the strip, or a comedy club or magic act.

Now, after visiting Las Vegas, it may be time to go on to the one place that no motorcycle vacation can be complete without visiting, Sturgis. The town of Sturgis, North Dakota is legendary among those who ride motorcycles, and the town people know how to make a biker welcome. Stop in for a root beer and buy a T-shirt as a souvenir of your trip. You'll be glad you did, and you'll remember your motorcycle vacation for years to come. Hop on your big, be it hog or Honda, and enjoy the ride.

With the recent success of Ducati Corse in the World Motorcycle category "Moto GP", engines made in Italy have shown, together with the "custom" Ferrari, to be designed to be regarded as leaders around the globe.

Indeed, a bit like in all other areas, the Italian manufacturing presents as well as a high quality product also the passion and determination that distinguishes us in achieving excellence and objectives.

In this regard, even in Go-Kart production Italian companies are moving and promoting all over the world, thanks to a great go-kart production using the best engines, components and accessories.

But perhaps this fascinating world of competition with mini-cars, called Kart or Go-Kart, is not well known and less popular because of the two sports quoted above: motorcycle and Formula One.

Indeed, karting is the simplest form of motorsports run with small cars with essential shape: tubular steel frame without suspension, wheels and engine. The sport, just for fun transmitting in goal, was born as a hobby but now is a step "almost mandatory" for those who wish to embark on a career as a professional pilot. Not surprisingly, the latest F1 exited from its "breeding garden" of the go-kart (Schumacher, Senna, Prost, Alonso, just to name a few).

The kart was born in America, as often happens, for economic motivations in 1956 where cars race became increasingly expensive and the number of participants (and especially the audience) was so narrow to seek alternatives. In these terms, the Karting was the dowry of remedy, at least in some respects, this situation by proposing solutions extremely funny but also economic and accessible to all fans of engines.

In Italy the phenomenon develops and explodes in the early '70s where simple manual constructions moved towards specialization of some companies in the production and sales of Go-Kart competition. The first racetracks were born and passion spreads quickly from young to older who do not disdain the emotions that only a sports car like the Go-Kart can feel.

Recently Kart manufacturers have always researched and developed new solutions, improving each component of competition mini-cars with high technology spare parts able to greatly improve the performance and consistency of the same in sports and competition areas.

Finally we have only to indulge in this passion with friends and colleagues in breathtaking races, perhaps without exaggerating for the weak of heart.

Deciding On The Purchase Of A Motor Home

The purchase of a motor home isn't to be taken lightly. There are several different types of "motor homes" on the market and each one is different in size, features and price.

The best known type of motor home is the recreational vehicle. This is known as a Type A motor home. The roomiest of motor homes, the largest and therefore the most expensive. Motor homes come in sizes up to 45 feet. They come with all the luxurious amenities you could imagine. Some have washer and dryer, hardwood floors, granite counter tops, luxury leather furniture, plasma TV's with satellite, custom stained glass and some even have large garden tub/showers. They range between $85,000 used and $400,000 for a new motor home. They generally get between 5 and 8 miles per gallon. Some of the newer larger models get around 5 miles per gallon. These sleep up to six people.

A Type B motor home category includes van campers and travel trailers. The van campers generally range from 18 feet to 22 feet in length and can comfortable sleep four. A fully contained van camper can have a shower, toilet, kitchen, TV, couches and beds. The beds are closer together affording less privacy. Most only have enough head room to allow for full standing in the center of the vehicle. Much smaller than the Type A motor homes they have less storage area. The van campers range in price between $43,000 and $70,000.
Travel trailers come in sizes 16 feet to 38 feet. The range in price from $6,000. for a used trailer upwards to $45,000 for a new travel trailer. You can generally find a fairly wide range of amenities in travel trailers. The larger the size the more you can sleep and the more likely you will be to have a private bedroom area.

A lot of travelers like the fact that they can park their trailer in a trailer park and take their vehicle touring the area. It does however take lots of practice learning how to properly drive with a travel trailer hitched to the back of your SUV.

Talk with friends and family who already own motor homes. One of the first things to do is to decide what type of traveling you and your family are most likely to do. Do you plan to spend one week vacationing in one spot? A travel trailer might be for you. Do you plan to visit a different spot each day, overnighting in different areas? Then a recreational vehicle might be for you. However, if the price of gas and the thought of filling up a 100 gallon gas tank on a vehicle that gets 5 to 8 miles per gallon isn't for you, you may want to re-think the choice of a recreational vehicle.

Truckers and haulage drivers have a tough choice sometimes. And while the sweet taste of a juicy breakfast may seem the perfect end to a job well done, a well planned backload from a freight exchange can create more paid work on completion of a job.

Let me explain.

In traditional haulage and freight transportation a trucker gets a delivery, and takes it from A to B (let's say Aldershot to Basingstoke). Trucker gets paid, company get their delivery – everyone's happy.

Except that the trucker has the trip back to their Aldershot to look forward to, and this time without any pay to cover the distance – or dead mileage. It wastes time, it wastes money and it eats into profits – whether the driver is an owner operator or works for a big haulage company.

And this is where freight exchanges come in.

Think of a freight exchange as a dating service for cargo. Freight forwarders post the loads they want to be delivered and the truckers sign up for loads they want to deliver. Then the two parties agree an appropriate fee and the delivery is made.

But how does this help our friend making the lonely journey back from Basingstoke? Simple – if he's aware in advance that he's going to be running empty back to Aldershot that afternoon, he can visit the 'freight dating' scene and look for any freight forwarders looking to send a package from Aldershot to Basingstoke – or any town en route. If he finds a backload (as they are known in the business), the company get their package delivered in a timely manner, the driver cuts down on his time driving unpaid, and the freight forwarder gets their load delivered. Everybody wins – except as mentioned earlier, our haulage driving friend delays his juicy breakfast reward, but life's a compromise.
Freight exchanges are nothing new, and have been around for decades, but as technology develops we're seeing new technologies in the industry, making things even easier. The freight exchanges I represent, Courier Exchange (http://www.courierexchange.co.uk) and Haulage Exchange (http://www.haulageexchange.co.uk), have their own e-payment system for the quick transfer of invoices, a mobile phone network allowing drivers to be contacted by the freight exchange while on the road and a system of freight alerts which inform haulage companies and owner operators when new loads are posted on the freight exchange which are suitable for them.

It's come a long way from just driving freight from A to B, and no doubt there are some interesting developments for the humble freight exchange in the future.

Paint your own Rims? Who would have thought something previously done by professionals could be done in your own home.

While, the concept of painting your own rims has been around a few years now, many questions pop up of how to do it and I thought I would share my own experiences with painting my Integra stock rims. I have read up many examples of how to do this, but my first time trying was this year when I chose to refinish my winter rims. I was quite please with the outcome.

First, what the hell do you need to paint your rims? Paint of course :) This is where Duplicolor comes in with their wheel paint. They offer paint colors to match your style coming in white, gunmetal, classic silver and bronze as well. I chose to do mine in gunmetal leaving my lip the stock polished style look. So here are your options:

So you chose your color, bought your paint and are semi-ready. First, you need to sand down your rims. Why? This gives the surface a rough texture so the paint has something to adhere to. Reference the article to polish your rims on how sanding of the rims works. The only difference with this is how far you want to go. In my case, being winter rims painted I chose not to go through the process of stripping the paint on the rims completely. I simply sanded down the surface with 300 grit sandpaper ensuring to make everything sanded equally. This gives the rough surface required for the paint to adhere, and as long as your rims had no damage it should be good enough.
Your rims are sanded; you have your paint and now are ready. First, make sure you clean all sanding dust off the rims and ensure a totally clean surface so the paint will stick and not flake off after your first drive out with your newly painted rims!!! Here are my rims washed and ready to completely dry before painting:

My rims are masked off with newspaper and masking tape. Of course you want to do this so you don't turn your tires into the color you are painting. I don't want gunmetal painted tires. Also if you look close enough, you will know that the lip has been masked off as well. So I carefully applied the masking tape on the lip to protect it from being painted as well. Also, you know the little thing you pump your air into, mask that off as well unless you want that to have a color change as well :)

The rims are dry, you have masked off what you don't want painted and now you are ready. Put some newspaper on the ground and place the rim on top of the newspaper. You don't want to paint the concrete underneath the rim so keep it clean with the newspaper.

Now apply your first coat of paint. Let the paint dry well and next day admire your handiwork and results.

It is gift-time once again and you are tearing at the few strands of hair on your head trying to find something to give your valued customers. Being an automobile dealer you realize the importance of making a customer feel happy and wanted and more than anything else, special. If you really want to achieve this, you could think seriously about gifting them with Buick Lucerne Keychains.

With a wide range of options to choose from, you certainly will have a difficult choice to make. Which one should you go in for? Is the leather and gold combo better than the metal oval one or maybe we should gift the silver? Do we buy the same model for all the 1459 customers that we have or should we buy some of each?

When you think of buying Buick Lucerne Keychains, you will also think about the value addition you can make to the product. For instance, if you want your customers to not have trouble in case of a breakdown in the vehicle then you could gift them a keychain engraved with your number on the reverse side. Not only do you give it a personal touch, but it also is a highly practical solution.

When you are in the midst of nowhere wondering what to do with an automobile that has conked out, you could ask them to call your customer service centre, from where they could give you a few tips on how to restart your vehicle. How would they do this, if your number was not engraved on the Buick Lucerne Keychains?
If you decide to buy a large number of keychains, you could get in touch with the manufacturer and ask him for a decent discount. It does make a lot of sense for an automobile dealer like you go gift his customers Buick Lucerne key chains. They make wonderful gifts and your customers are going to appreciate your gift idea for its beauty, style and practical utility.

While you are on the subject of gifts, you could also check out the other accessories that come with a Buick stamp. There are car seats, shelves and other safety accessories that would give your car a classy look. If that is what you are looking for, there's no problem; just log on to the internet for more information. There are websites that cater to practically all your needs. If you are looking for wholesale rates, when you want to buy in bulk, there are sites that offer you good deals.

Since these articles are made of very good material, they do last a very long time, long enough for your customers to remember the services that you are capable of rendering. There might be quite a few names that are available, but there is no doubt that Buick Lucerne Keychains are right on top of the list. A wonderful gift idea you cannot go wrong with the Buick Lucerne Keychains and it is sure to make a lasting impression.
Don't Forget The Tax Deductions!

When donating an automobile to charity, you'll want to think about tax deductions. According to Publication 4303, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and state charity officials provide general guidelines for donations.

In the case than an individual is eligible to deduct charitable donations for federal income tax purposes, there are steps that must be taken. Only if the charity receiving the vehicle is a qualified organization, can this happen. Charitable, religious, and educational organizations usually qualify.

To verify a charity organization, simply call the account services division of the IRS and see if it has tax exemption status. If an organization is located at a church, synagogue, temple, or mosque, it is not required to apply for exemption.

Some charity only allows for limited tax deductions. Your tax deduction cannot exceed 50 percent of your adjusted gross income and other limitations may apply as well. You can research a specific type of charity contribution and learn how it will affect your taxes. Generally though, the largest amount of money you can deduct from your income tax return is simply the fair value of your automobile – whatever price a person would buy it for.

It is important to take care of the vehicle's records, as they may be required to authenticate your donation. Furthermore, if you plan to deduct more than $250, you should ask for a written acknowledgment from the charity about the donation. The document should feature the name of the charity, a description of the automobile, a statement that clarifies that no goods or services, beyond religious guidance or instruction, were exchanged for the automobile.

You must obtain this written acknowledgment on or before the due date of your return; the same year you donated the vehicle. It can be a paper copy or a mere e-mail.

As for charities, they must be available for public inspection so as to secure their tax exemption status. As well, they must provide documents that show their annual returns.

Sometimes I wonder how US Presidents used to get around. Before the invention of the limousine, the private jet, or even the car, what exactly set the President's mode of transportation apart from the mode of the regular citizen?
Armored cars are now considered almost essential for all high-profile figures in dangerous parts of the world. A Presidential Limousine has become virtually synonymous with the word "Armored Car," in essence it is a vehicle of hardcore protection.

The Presidential limousine may seem like a recent invention, something that came about within the past few Presidential terms. This, however, is a misconception. Officially, the first President to ride in what has become known as the Presidential limousine was Woodrow Wilson. Taking the streets during a parade celebrating the US victory in World War I, he was honoring the end of the war and, unknowingly, starting the beginning of a transportation tradition.
Protecting world leaders is a serious business and there are only a handful of companies around the world with the specialist engineering skills. One of the first armored cars for a political leader is thought to have been a limousine built by engineering firm O'Gara-Hess & Eisenhardt for President Harry S. Truman in 1949.

Today, the technology has greatly moved on - and it has been shown to save lives in the worst case scenarios. President George W Bush's vehicle is thought to be the most advanced ever. Vehicle security works on three basic principles: • Protection at point of attack • Ability to evade and escape • Counter-measures
Models openly advertised as having "presidential standard" security come fitted with armor around the battery, radiator, engine block and systems to automatically seal the fuel tank to prevent explosions. Another measure appearing in the top-of-the-range models is night vision systems. The Presidential limousine is sometimes taken to overseas stops where secure transportation is needed. Sometimes, the president uses transportation that is already in the country.
Limousines have long been viewed as a pinnacle of success. Presidential limousines with bullet proof glass and numerous security features are produced by automotive manufacturers and presented to the sitting president. Cadillac limousines have been a favorite choice of U.S. Presidents throughout the years as is illustrated by President Bush's new Cadillac DTS Limousine.

It doesn't really matter - the last Presidential limo was a Cadillac and the next one will be too. It's standard protocol for the head of State to drive a vehicle from their country's most prestigious automotive manufacturer. In Britain, that's a Jaguar, and in many countries it's a shared gig - Peugeot and Renault in France, BMW and Mercedes in Germany, and in Japan, Emperor Akihito is currently driven in a Nissan Prince Royal and there's a suitably up market Toyota under development.

As we are saying limousine is a luxury car which is often associated with the wealthy and hardcore protection. Therefore limousines are owned not only by individuals, many are owned by governments to transport senior politicians, by large companies to transport executives, or by broadcasters to transport guests.

Wear Motorcycle Helmets? That's A Good Question!

Motorcyclists are always evaluating the use of motorcycle helmets. Is this simply a matter of preference or are there significant issues to be considered?

A friend of mine (Bill) has chosen to ride with a helmet, or at times without a helmet. He says it depends upon riding conditions for him. One day he was on a two lane road, traveling about 50mph when a tractor trailer truck pulled out from the right side of the street to go the same direction. His thought was to maintain his speed and simply pass the truck. [Which, most likely could be done.] Unfortunately the truck driver did not have enough room for the turn, and stopped dead still, crossing both lanes. Bill was now approaching the truck too fast and too close to stop safely. He tried breaking hard but immediately knew he was facing the side of the trailer head-on. With quick thinking he laid his Harley on the side and slid under the trailer and on down the road a couple hundred feet. Relaying his story to me, he was flat on his back, feet first, with his arms spread out and his head bopping on the highway. When all was finished he gave credit to God for helping him and praised his destroyed helmet for saving his life. [Plus, the leather jacket and gloves that had taken the tears in place of him.] My friend only suffered from some sore muscles and hurt pride. But, it brings up the subject of helmet safety.

In the KSL-TV News of South Jordan, the Police Chief (Dan Pearson) is likewise teaching people that motorcycle helmets save lives, after losing three friends to motorcycle accidents in two years. All three suffered from head injuries and none were wearing motorcycle helmets. Then, the police chief himself was involved in an accident on highway 89 North of Afton, Wyoming. A truck towing a horse trailer had passed him and pulled in front of him, hitting the front of his motorcycle with the spare tire mounted on the back. Dan was thrown off his bike, landing headfirst. He says, "This injury would have been a fatal blow if I hadn't had the helmet on." Dan suffered from bruises and a few broken bones.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that motorcyclists survive a crash and receive less serious injuries when wearing a helmet. They report that at least 600 people are saved each year.

One question that is asked, "motorcycle helmets might protect your brain but can it increase your chances of a broken neck?" Dr. Michael Yorgason, a surgeon at Montana Orthopedics and Sport Medicine, states that the findings from medical literature shows: "autopsy studies done after fatal motorcycle accidents have shown that neck injuries and fractures are equally likely, whether you are wearing a helmet or not." Yet, most medical reports support the use of motorcycle helmets. They believe that the helmet generally decreases the risk of head and brain injury significantly and surmise that wearing them does not increase your risk of neck injury.

An Italian study concluded that a helmet decreased injury by 66%. A Thailand study found that after making motorcycle helmets mandatory, head injuries decreased by 41% in 2 years. Now, in Kentucky, a study revealed that brain injury increased by 4.3 times when not wearing a helmet.

In an article written by Jonathan P. Goldstein, PhD., titled "The Effects of Motorcycle Helmet Use on the Probability of Fatality and the Severity of Head and Neck Injuries." He concludes that there are a number of variables in a study that puts the study in question. Major differences are held concerning helmet use or non-helmet use. Normal results compare death and injury rates are two and three times greater for non-helmet riders and increases in occurrence rates in repeal years that vary from 19% to 63%. On one side: the helmet verses the non-helmet study fails to consider these two classes of riders. Stating that helmet riders are more cautious by nature. One, they drive slower, thus have slower speeds in crash situations. Two, they are less likely to have an accident. Three, helmet wearers are less likely to drink and drive (alcohol or use of drugs). These behavior changes dramatically reduce a riders risk.
On-the-other-hand, factors to consider are: 1-average age of the biker 2-average miles driven each year, per biker 3-average experience of the biker 4-the size of the motorcycle driven. So, between the size of the bike, potential speed, age, risk taking and alcohol ingestion; simply, cannot realistically prove the effectiveness of helmet use.

The Goldstein study did approach these variables in question. They reported a study that evaluates the effectiveness of motorcycle helmets in accident situations. The conclusions are: 1-Motorcycle helmets have no statistically significant effect on the probability of fatality. 2- Helmets reduce the severity of head injuries. 3-Past a critical impact speed of 13 mph, helmets increased the severity of neck injuries. The report then concluded that helmet users face a trade-off between reductions in the severity of head injuries and increases in the severity of neck injuries.

Under these circumstances a mandatory helmet use law cannot be reasoned to be an effective method to stop an individuals death or injury when involved in an accident.

Perhaps other choices need to be considered in providing safety in motorcycle use. Here are three suggestions. One, educate the general driving public (car and truck drivers) in road use with motorcycles. Two, educate inexperienced motorcyclists on accident avoidance (evasive action) and the proper use of these powerful machines. Three, create a strict enforcement of drunk driving laws.

[Some studies show that alcohol consumption is the major factor in deaths and injury.]

Harley-Davidson offers basic and advanced training to 200+ dealerships in 30 states. Honda has four training centers. BMW is considering advanced training but says they tend to attract seasoned riders.

It is believed that training cuts panic. You need to know how to negotiate a curve and resist the urge to brake, etc.

Here are some other factors that need to be considered. Tires should be inflated to the proper level. A riders visibility to be seen. Tests have shown that the plain white motorcycle helmets are the easiest to be seen. Clothing makes a difference between day/night.

For night riding there are reflective vests and lighted vests available. There is GLO GLOV; reflective tape for clothing and cycle; reflective vests and coats. Now back to helmets.

USA Today carried the statistic from the National Highway Traffic Saftey Administration, reporting that 24% of the fatal crashes in 2003 involved unlicensed motorcyclists, and that car drivers are responsible in about two-thirds of motorcycle fatalities.

US DOT findings discovered that following the Helmet Law Repeal in Texas and Arkansas from Aug/Sept of 1997 to May 1998, helmet use dropped to 52% in Arkansas and to 66% in Texas. In Arkansas motorcycle fatalities rose 21% following the repeal and head injuries increased 18.5%. Texas fatalities rose 31%.

One court case in California disputed what standards were set for qualifying a helmet as "safe". For a list of the US Government "Compliance Testing of Motorcycle Helmets" you can check to see if your helmet passed or failed. Check with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

When I am on my motorcycle, I know what I am doing. I don't know what the other driver is doing. So, with the many facets of helmet use and considering the pro/cons, I choose to wear a helmet. You will have to decide for yourself!

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/fftr/~3/U9jNXO-VMf0/wear-motorcycle-helmets-thats-good.html" title="Wear Motorcycle Helmets?

Autopilots The first self-steering gear was introduced in the 1920's to control model yachts but it was not until 1948 that the principle was applied to full scale yachts. Standing at the helm for lengthy periods, monitoring instruments and keeping a good look out can be very tiring. An autopilot relieves the helmsman from steering the correct course leaving him free to maintain a proper watch. The autopilot can be set to either steer a compass course or a course relative to the wind. A fluxgate compass or electronic wind indicator feeds information to a microprocessor which then makes the necessary rudder movements to return the vessel to it's required course. The mechanical power is applied to the rudder by either electric linear activators, hydraulic pumps or rotary drives. GPS/Chart plotters can be used to input navigational instructions to the autopilot.

Battery Chargers will keep batteries fully charged thereby extending their working life.

Chart Plotters Typically a chart plotter consists of an antenna, mounted high on the boat, to track GPS signals and a display unit sited either at the at the navigation station or the helm of the vessel. The vessels position is sent from the antenna to the display unit which in turn shows it graphically on the chart. The Chart itself will look similar to it's paper equivalent and show depth, land mass, navigational aids such as bouys and potential dangers in the form of wrecks and obstructions. The user can add way points to the chart and zoom in and out of the display. Chart plotters can be connected to drive an autopilot and/or send GPS data to a fish finder or radar. They can also interface with a laptop enabling complex passage planning to be done away from the boat and then entered into the chart plotter after arriving at the boat.

Magnetic Transmitting Compasses work like traditional compasses using magnets to determine the vessels orientation to the earth's magnetic field they then transmit the boats heading to an electronic display. They make steering easier than with conventional compasses because they display steadier headings and do not suffer from the "lag" that occurs when making a turn. They can interface with chart plotters, autopilots and radar. Fluxgate Compasses consist of two pieces of readily saturated magnetic material with coils wound round them in opposing directions. AC current is passed through the coils and the material is saturated in one direction and then the other. The earth's magnetic field affects slightly the time at which saturation occurs, earlier in one coil and later in the other. The difference is then calculated giving an output proportional to the earth's magnetic field. They are accurate to 0.1 of a degree. Their output can be displayed digitally to the helmsman or they can interface with autopilots, chart plotters and radar.

Echo Sounders work on the same principle as sonar. A transducer emits a narrow beam of high frequency sound. This is reflected by any solid objects and the time between transmission and receipt of the echo is measured. The speed of sound through water is know and so the range or distance to the sea bed can be calculated. That is then displayed in metres. Forward Looking Sonar (FLS) enables you to see the underwater hazards before you're actually on top of them. A typical range for a FLS is 150 metres.

An Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) is a piece of equipment designed to float free of a vessel in distress. It then sends a radio signal that can be detected by Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking (SARSAT) satellites. They relay a message to a ground station that in turn can instigate a search and rescue operation.

Fish Finders use the same technology as sonar. A narrow beam of high frequency sound is transmitted by a transducer, this is reflected by solid objects such as the sea bed. By developing this technology fishfinders provide displays that show where the fish are and they can differentiate between bait fish and larger species

Global Positioning System (GPS Receivers) - This system was originally designed for military purposes and is owned and operated by the United States Department of Defence. 24 satellites are arranged in a "birdcage" around the globe, they are positioned in such a way that at any place on the earth's surface a direct line of sight can be established to a minimum of 4 satellites. A fix is obtained by measuring accurately the distance between a satellite and the GPS receiver at a precise time. Because the exact position of the satellite is known, these distances provide position lines which are converted by a microprocessor within the GPS receiver to read outs of latitude and longitude.
The log is used to measure the boats speed through the water. A paddle wheel or impeller, mounted below the waterline is turned by the flow of water, this generates electrical impulses that are fed to a microprocessor that displays both speed and distance run.

Inverters - On most boats today you will find domestic equipment of one sort or another. For on board entertainment there are televisions and stereo systems. With the popularity of chart plotters comes the PC or laptop. Maintenance often requires the use of power tools. Liveaboards might have a washing machine, dishwasher or microwave. Can take 12v, 24v or 48v supply and convert it to a stable 110 v or 220v AC supply.

Navtex can perhaps best be described as a continuously updated telex service providing navigation and weather information within specified areas. An on board receiver, tuned to 518kHz, the worldwide Navtex frequency, if left turned on will either print out or display the latest massages sent from a local station. The service is available up to 400 miles from the coast.

Radar enables you to see what otherwise would be invisible. They offer greatest benefit at night and in fog or rain and are of particular value when close to shore or in busy shipping lanes. They consist of an antenna and a display. The antenna sends out a stream of RF energy which is reflected back off hard objects. When this energy is bounced back it is converted to a signal which displayed to the user. The antenna rotates every few seconds, the display continuously calculates the direction of the antenna and so a precise bearing to the target is calculated. The time is measured for the energy to be reflected and so the distance of the target is also displayed.

Satellite Phones consist of an antenna, a modem and a normal handset. They are powered by an iridium battery. Their range is anywhere covered by in Inmarsat Mini-M satellite. Voice, fax, email and data can be transmitted.

Satellite TV requires an antenna and of course a television. Reception is available within a "footprint" which is based on EIRP (Effective Isotropic Radiated Power) of a transmitting satellite. The EUTELSAT together with the two ASTRA satellites cover Europe. NILESAT and the two ARABSATs cover Africa and the Middle East. Good coverage is also available in North, Central and Southern America.

SSB Radio has a range of several thousand miles. You will need an FFC license, or the equivalent in whichever country you plan to operate it. Power consumption is a consideration. Up to 100 Watts may be required for transmission. SSB radio requires several items of equipment. A transceiver capable of SSB operation, An antenna, this must be 8 metres long and in practice most boats use a backstay or shroud for the purpose having fitted the necessary insulators. An antenna tuner matched to the transceiver model. If you want to send email you will also need and radio modem and computer.
VHF Radio The power required to transmit is minimal, all sets have the option of transmitting on either 1 Watt or 25 Watts and the lower power should be used whenever possible. Unlike telephones that allow you to both talk and hear at the same time most VHF sets require you to press a transmit button prior to talking. This is known as simplex. In addition you get the convenience of Roadside Assistance and Courtesy Transportation programs, features that the competitors just cannot match.

Hyundai Ix35 SUV Interior Styling

Design and Engineering

Good:
The first to feature the Hyundai brands 'Fluidic Sculpture' theme which arrived in February 2010. It makes into the list of the coolest Compact SUV's one can buy. It is enhanced by the large hexagonal grille up-front which is a typical Hyundai style of spelling its presence. The rear hatch holds a feature that could be called the 'mini duck tail' (Porsche 911 lovers get this). Carverdict's Salute.

Not so good:
Considering the size of the vehicles 'footprint' the Hyundai ix35 is no lightweight design - tipping the scales between 1.6 & 1.8 tonnes (compare this to a medium family-sized wagon and you'll see that on average SUV's are definitely heavier creatures). The front grille is body coloured on the entry-level 'Active' grade and as a result (to our eyes) it doesn't appear as well integrated as the grey coloured versions on the mid and upper-grades.

Interior and Styling

Good:
The steering wheel is a funky four-spoke structure and the driver's seat features six-way power adjustment (except on the entry-level Active grade). The seat position is relatively high, providing good frontal visibility. The rear seats offer sufficient head room and feature a fold-down centre armrest with favorable sized cupholders. The Hyundai ix35's cabin storage space is great for a family car and the rear seats fold flat to boost cargo space from almost 600L to over 1,400L! The panoramic glass roof, standard on the Highlander grade, creates a beautiful lightened feel to the interior.

Pre October 2010 the Hyundai ix35's steering wheel adjusted for tilt (up & down) but not reach (in & out). Not any more, thankfully it now does both. The 2011 ix35 range also gains additional sound deadening materials to reduce road noise levels.

Not so good:
It is disappointing that the dash features more plastic than one would like. The rear legroom provides enough space for the legs to put up with the journey, but not as spacious as expected. The lower window lines are quite above the margin; this means the kids will have to keep bouncing to get a view of the road.

Performance

Good:
Entry-level Active's 2.0L Petrol engine produces a respectable 122kW of power (& 197Nm of torque) and whilst noisy under hard acceleration it is by no means forgotten - it's the sole front-wheel drive variant and subsequently lighter than the AWD ix35's. The mid-spec 2.4L Petrol benefits from significantly more torque (227Nm); however by far the most impressive engine is the smooth-sounding 2.0L Turbo Diesel which generates a whopping 135kW of power and 392Nm of torque.

Not so good:
With the much hype of the 2.4L Petrol engine, in the real world however the speed doesn't seems any faster than 2.0L. Yes the sound is less though.

Ride and Handling

Good:
Hyundai ix35 affords a fantastic ride displaying the ability of being the only Compact SUV on the road without the fear of being scratched at the corners. Easy to steer through the traffic. Even if the Highlander grade is set on large 18-inch alloy wheels, it gives a comfortable ride.

Not so good:
The steering is on the light side, but considering this isn't a sports car, it's hardly worth mentioning. Under hard acceleration the Turbo Diesel grades can suffer from torque steer through the steering wheel (no surprise considering how much pulling power this engine has).

The impressive handling (for a high-riding SUV anyway) does come at the price of ride quality; whilst fine over smooth surfaces the ride is a touch on the firm side over rougher surfaces..

From October 2010 the electronic power steering has been changed to improve steering feel and in order to enhance the ride quality all AWD variants now get ASD suspension as standard. We'll let you know our thoughts of the changes very soon, once we spend some time driving the updated range.

2011 Dodge Durango Road Test

Chrysler has gone through difficult times in the last few years and is now busily rebuilding with a slew of nicely upgraded 2011 products and some very good all-new ones. Among the latter is this new 2011 Dodge Durango SUV-a three-row, unibody, rear-drive platform - with little but its name in common with its truck-based SUV predecessor.

Dodge design chief Mark Trostle says its handsome new body was shaped by the same "passionate" designers who did the muscular 2011 Charger. "It's all about proportions," he asserts, and its purposeful but pleasing proportions begin with a 10-inch-longer body on a five-in. longer wheelbase vs. the Grand Cherokee's.

This new Durango's spacious cabin offers premium soft-touch materials front-to-rear regardless of trim level. Interior design chief Klaus Busse calls it "friendly all the way back to the third row, with nice, soft edges throughout." An interactive Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) provides a variety of useful information, and the new instrument panel offers a choice of monotone or two-tone trim with dark upper and lighter lower colors.

Twenty-eight different seating configurations are offered in the 2011 Durango, and cargo room extends to a maximum 85 cubic feet with both second- and third-row seats folded flat. The front seats offer four-way lumbar adjustments and can be warmed or cooled with heating and ventilating options. A fold-flat front passenger seat can be combined with the 60/40 split-folding (and reclining) second-row and 50/50 third row providing room for long items.

Noise-killing laminated glass is standard, and a double sound-insulated wall separates the engine compartment from the interior. The adult-size third row is easy to access, and when it's unoccupied, its headrests drop away with the push of a button to open up rear visibility.

The 2011 Durango's new unibody structure is markedly stiffer than the previous body-on-frame thanks to a "strategic selection" of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels. Its short/long arm front and isolated multi-link rear suspensions mount to isolated cradles, while somewhat aggressive shock and spring rates and large sway bars limit body roll in hard cornering. Working with a surprisingly precise new electro-hydraulic "performance" steering system, this combination provides an excellent balance of on-road handling and ride comfort.

Base engine is Chrysler's new 3.6-liter DOHC, 24-valve, variable valve timing (VVT) all-aluminum Pentastar V6. It delivers a generous 290 ponies and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, along with best-in-class V6 tow capability (up to 6,200 pounds) and 14 percent better fuel economy;16 mpg EPA city and 23 highway with rear-wheel-drive, 16/22 with available all-wheel drive vs. the old V6 it replaces.

Optional is Chrysler's legendary 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with VVT and "fuel-saver" (cylinder deactivation) mode. It cranks out 360 horses and 390 lb.-ft. of torque and delivers best-in-class tow capability (7,400 lbs.) and fuel efficiency at 14/20 EPA mpg with RWD, 13/20 with AWD. Both are coupled to standard 5-speed (not 6-speed) automatic transmissions, and HEMI-powered AWD Durangos have a low-range transfer case for light off-road use and towing challenges such as pulling a boat out of the water on a steep angle or backing up with a trailer attached.

The Hemi-powered R/T sits lower on 20-in. performance wheels and tires and a sport-tuned suspension. The Citadel boasts perforated Nappa leather, blind spot monitoring, HID headlamps, 20-in. chrome wheels and a unique chrome grille. Other available features include adaptive cruise control, rear park assist and state-of-the-art navigation, communication and entertainment options such as SIRIUS Satellite Radio and Backseat TV, and Uconnect Web.

autoMedia.com test-drove a Hemi-powered 2011 Dodge Durango on a variety of California roads, including narrow, twisty two-lanes and found it surprisingly quick, quiet, comfortable and almost sport-sedan fun despite its three-row SUV size and substantial 5,100-lb. curb weight. No question it is fully competitive with such able competitors as Chevy's Traverse, GMC's Acadia and Ford's excellent all-new (also unibody, but car-based FWD/AWD) Explorer.

Beginning in 2011, the Ford Motor Company started to showcase its Ford Vertrek concept, a vehicle offering a glimpse of the design direction Ford will be taking with several of its upcoming models. The Vertrek made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, critically acclaimed for its fresh style, roomy interior and advanced engine.

Conceptual Cars

The Ford Vertrek is a concept in that it likely won't be built exactly as shown, but it will lend many of its ideas to future models. Some auto show concepts represent the vivid and sometimes unrealistic dreams of an automaker's design team. Other concepts are the real deal and are soon green-lighted for production. Auto shows allow car manufacturers to gauge customer opinion on a large scale and make adjustments to a project based partially on that feedback.

In the Vertrek, Ford is showing the world the design direction of its small SUV line. That line is called the Ford Escape in North America and the Ford Kuga in Europe. Both models are approximately one to two years from being replaced, perhaps sharing the same body style and incorporating many of the features found in the Vertrek.

Those features include a grille not unlike the one found in the 2012 Ford Focus, a compact car scheduled for North American release in spring 2011. Already on sale in Europe and most other Ford markets, the all new Focus is recognizable for its pronounced, sporty grille, an attribute of the Vertrek.

Smart Design

But, the Vertrek isn't a car and it certainly is tasked with doing many different things than the Ford Focus. The vehicle stands tall, riding on 20-inch wheels flanked by flared wheelwells. The most pronounced styling attribute, however, is the roofline which curves downward from the A-pillar to the D-pillar. The Vertrek resembles a sports model placed on top of a compact car chassis.

Inside, the Vertrek is all about room, offering 66 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second seat. That's important because the current Ford Escape has a roomy interior too, prized for maximizing its cargo space. Ford's designers made sure that one of the Escape's chief attributes was adapted for the Vertrek, doing that with great success.

Because the Vertrek is a concept, the exact layout of the cabin and the features offered aren't emphasized as much. Yes, if this vehicle were put into production, you would see Ford SYNC, an impressive stereo system and all of the latest technology features. Those attributes are important, but the emphasis of the Vertrek is on its design, cabin layout and what is featured under the hood.

EcoBoost Engineering

Speaking about "under the hood" attributes, the Ford Vertrek incorporates an engine that the Ford Motor Company says will be widely used within the next few years: EcoBoost, its line of fuel induction, turbocharged motors. In the Vertrek and very likely to appear in the Ford Escape and Ford Kuga, can be found a 1.6-liter four cylinder version of this engine. Diminutive, but certainly not weak and it is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

That combination will give Ford's small SUV two notables: top of the range power and exceptional gas mileage. Whoever said the two must be mutually exclusive?

So, if you are at an auto show in North America, look for the Ford Vertrek as copies of this model will be shown in many locations. The Vertrek name won't be retained, but come 2013, the Ford Escape and Ford Kuga will most likely take many of its most important characteristics when next generation versions of these SUVs make their debut.

Ferrari has a long and successful history of developing 12-cylinder engines. From its first V12, in 1946, through today's cars, such as the 599XX and the 612, Maranello continues to produce powerhouse engines with outlandish ability. The fastest, most glamorous ultimate supercars through history have had 12 cylinders to power them, some of the best racing cars, too. A Ferrari is all about sensibility rather than sense and the 12-cylinders engine is right at the core of Ferrari's being and remain the Pracing Horse's most emblematic engine, both for its performance and its magical sound. The first Ferrari engine was, of course, a 12-cylinder.

The first V12 of 1946, designed by Gioachino Colombo, was an engine of mere 1.5-litre capacity; by the time its direct descendants had reached the end of their development, they had grown to 4.0 liters. The first quality expected from a V12 is smoothness. It is expensive, a bit longer than V8 and it is heavy, but it is the best compromise for smoothness in a road car.

It is impossible to choose which 12-cylinder Ferrari should be elected to represent part of the world's heritage, but what follows is a brief examination of the most notable 12-cylinders cars in Ferrari's history. The 250 GT Berlinetta was designed by Pininfarina and built at the Scaglietti works in Modena.

Its power unit was a further development of the original Colombo-designed single overhead camshaft per bank V12 engine. The Testarossa revived perhaps the most revered name in Ferrari's history and the engine was the first four-valves-per-cylinder 180deg V12 cylinder configuration unit fitted in a Ferrari road car. The F50 was the limited edition Ferrari "extreme machine" of the 1990's, taking over the mantle from the epic F40. Whereas the two previous Ferrari "supercars", the 288 GTO and F40, had been powered by turbocharged V8 engines, the latest variant used a normally aspirated V12 engine. The mid-mounted engine was a 65deg V12 unit fitted longitudinally.

The 612 Scaglietti was the first V12 Ferrari to feature an aluminum chassis and body unit, and with the engine mounted completely behind the front axle it has an optimum 46/54 front/rear weight distribution. The 612 is also the first Ferrari to benefit from the Atelier Personalization Programme, which provides clients with a wide choice of options to create a true one-off. The 612 Scaglietti embodies the series production of 2+2 Ferraris which started with the 250 GT in 1960 and was followed by the 330, 365, 400, 412 and 456 series.

However, more than any of its predecessor, this really is the ultimate 2+2, a true four-seater. The 599 GTB Fiorano pays tribute to the company's famous Fiorano test track. The numerical "599" refers to the 5999cc engine, which is derived from the astonishing unit fitted in the Ferrari Enzo. This new generation 65deg V12 engine boasts many features that have reduced its weight, size and centre of gravity. The mid-front engine car has a 200mph top speed and a 0-62 mph acceleration time of a remarkable 3.7 secs. All these plus a spacious leather-clad cabin and excellent luggage space, too.

You can rent a hybrid car on your next trip to California, Phoenix or Vegas, but you better call ahead. The availability of these exciting new vehicles is limited and rentals are in very high demand.

But when you rent a hybrid car, you can save money on gas and support the environment at the same time. Plus, if you're thinking of buying one, renting before hand is a great way to check out the new technology.

Whatever the reason, customers are lining up at EV Rental cars.

Thanks to Jeff Pink's entrepreneurial spirit and his mission to save the planet, EV Rentals opened its doors in 1998 as the first and only hybrid electric rental company in the U.S. And Pink now has the biggest fleet of these vehicles anywhere in the country.

There are over 400 hybrids to rent in eight western airport locations - Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Ana, San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Phoenix and Las Vegas. And Pink now has a partnership with discount Fox Rent A Car and is getting ready for expansion with plans for 2,500 brand new hybrids.

As you may already know, these cars are pretty hard to come by. There just aren't that many available and they're certainly not accessible at the gas car fleet prices offered to Hertz and Avis. This means EV Rentals has to buy their automobiles one at a time at retail prices. But they do get some help through government consumer education program grants.

Right now, you have a choice of renting a Toyota Prius, a Toyota Highlander and a Honda Civic Hybrid. All three are recommended by Consumer Reports and get between 35 mpg to 60 mpg in town and on the road.

And, in the state of California, with a hybrid, you get to drive in the carpool lane even when you're driving alone. That, by itself, can save you a small fortune in time and money when tooling around LA.

EV Rentals' mission is to "provide the most technologically advanced environmental vehicles to the general public as soon as they're available, to educate the public and to raise the awareness of the benefits of driving clean-fuel vehicles, and to create a market for clean vehicle technology."

The management team at EV Rentals believes it's time for people to start thinking more about protecting the environment. They're extremely proud to have prevented over "100 tons of air pollution and to have passed on to their customers more than $1 million in fuel cost savings by acting environmentally."

However, be aware that when you rent a hybrid car, it will probably cost you more than for a conventional gas model. And, even though you pay less for gasoline, you'll still have to drive a lot of miles each day to make up the difference.

Right now, until auto manufacturer's economies of scale kick in, owners of these exciting new vehicles have the same problem.

But consider this. When renting a new Prius in LA, you'll be driving the same car Leonardo DiCpario drives. I'm sure he considers the extra expense as either an investment in the environment or the cost of being extremely cool. You could too!

Hybrid cars vs gas cars? The answer depends on your priorities.

Maybe you're tired of paying high prices at the gas pump or sending U.S. dollars to the Middle East. Perhaps you're concerned about the environment and the fact that oil is a depleting resource that shouldn't be wasted sitting in traffic jams.

Whatever your priorities, fuel economy is not the only factor to consider when looking at hybrid cars vs gas cars. To make a sound financial decision, you might also want to compare the purchase price, tax benefits, insurance, repairs and maintenance costs.

Starting with fuel economy, realize no one gets the numbers posted on new car window stickers. The average driver only gets about 75% of what's been promised.

And that includes hybrid cars. But hybrids still get much better mileage than conventional gasoline vehicles. Smaller four cylinder models are the only gas cars that come close to hybrids in fuel economy.

The hybrid, however, comes with a higher sticker price than similar gas models. Some are as much as several thousand dollars higher in cost. This extra cost is expected to come down in the near future as consumer demand increases and manufacturers achieve greater economy of scale.

Consumer advocate testing has shown that hybrid savings in fuel economy usually fails to offset the extra purchase price. But, for many buyers, federal and state tax benefits can help make up the difference.

Hybrid cars may also get relief on insurance costs too. Some automobile insurance carriers are now offering as much as 5% to 10% discounts on hybrid cars. Apparently, preliminary research has shown that hybrid car drivers make fewer insurance adjustment claims and that's being reflected in their premiums.

Another thing to consider is repair and maintenance. Some believe the new hybrid technology may be too sophisticated for local auto mechanics, requiring hybrid car owners to always return to the dealer for repair. But that's not just true for hybrids. As cars become more electronic, auto mechanics will need a degree in computer science to keep gas cars in tune too.

Hybrid car manufacturers, like Toyota, Honda and Ford, must feel confident about their cars because they offer at least 8 to 10 year warranties on hybrid-specific components. Toyota, for example, reports their battery pack will last for more than 180,000 miles. For the average driver that's over twelve years.

And, as far as maintenance is concerned, most hybrid components need no regular maintenance. Of course, you'll have to change the oil in the gas engine every 5,000 to 10,000 miles, just as you would in a conventional car.

One distinct advantage hybrids have is that you won't need to change your brake pads as often. Because of their regenerative braking technology, hybrid brake pads last much longer. Prius customers have reported driving as far as 85,000 miles without a replacement. The brake pads of most gas cars last only about 15,000 miles.

The bottom line for hybrid cars vs. gas cars gets down to your own personal priorities. But, there's one thing for sure, as consumer demand increases you're going to see more alternative car future choices at better prices.

The Toyota Motor Company is coming off of a tough period where the quality of its cars have been questioned and as customers consider competing models. For the first time Toyota's supposed invincibility has been challenged and the automaker is now finding that its once smooth road has been littered with quality potholes.

But, Toyota is working diligently to take care of its own problems and is moving forward in its quest to elevate its Prius hybrid model. The Toyota Prius has been around for more than a decade, the benchmark model by which all other hybrids are patterned. Toyota cannot afford to rest on its laurels, however, as Ford, Hyundai, Kia and others have brought their own hybrid models to the market. Plug-in hybrids are here as well and include the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt. Suddenly, Toyota is in danger of being bypassed by the competition.

Expanding Prius

The Prius line is, however, the most popular hybrid on the market. Sales in 2010 were down in this segment, but that is considered to be only a temporary glitch. Gas prices have moved north of $3 per gallon which means car buyers are exploring their options including finding cars getting exceptional fuel mileage.

Toyota's plans for Prius are unfolding, with the automaker using the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit to explain where the brand is headed. Between show releases and company chatter, we can expect the Prius line to look far different over the coming years as that model is expanded:

Plug-In Prius - Like other automakers, a plug-in version of the Prius is on its way. This model will use a lithium-ion battery pack and be rechargeable. Having plug-in capacity will enable the Prius to go much farther on electricity only, with a gas engine kicking in when the battery has been depleted.

New Models - The Prius v is the first new model for the Prius family. This wagon-like vehicle is a crossover. The cabin is larger, which means back seat passengers will get more room. Storage has been increased, by 50 percent according to Toyota. The "v" will debut as a 2012 model and will ride on the same platform powering other Priuses.

Concept Prius - Although not green-lighted for production, the Prius C concept shows that Toyota is serious about building an entire line of Priuses. This model, a 2011 NAIAS debut candidate, maintains the five-door versatility of the original Prius, but has a sportier visage and is being targeted to compete against the cheaper Honda Insight.

Rare Earth - Toyota, like other hybrid builders, relies on rare earth materials such a lanthanum to power its Prius. That may change as the automaker is looking at using an induction system for its hybrid models, avoiding usage of materials which are expensive and 90 percent controlled by the communist Chinese government.

Future Growth

Expect Toyota to roll out additional Prius models as the sub-brand continues to grow. A coupe is possible as is an even smaller Yaris-size model. Don't expect Prius to become its own brand, but it will be an important sub-brand and could prove to be the model line credited with rescuing Toyota.
