Treating Cellulite With Coffee

2012-07-05T12:17:00.000-07:00

Now that summer is here, many people are concerned about the appearance of their cellulite, commonly referred to as “orange peel” or “cottage cheese skin”. According to the National Institutes of Health, “Cellulite is fat that is deposited in pockets just below the surface of the skin. It occurs around the hips, thighs, and buttocks. Because it is very close to the surface of the skin, cellulite leads to a dimpled appearance.”

“Orange peel skin” can affect both men and women, and although it does not pose a health risk, people may be embarrassed by its appearance. Fortunately, there is a solution to reduce the appearance of cellulite!

By topically applying coffee to the skin in the form of a soap or body scrub, you can effectively lessen the presence of “cottage cheese skin”. The caffeine in coffee has stimulating properties that prompt the draining of the fats and toxins that contribute to cellulite. When coffee is massaged on the skin, circulation increases, fatty tissue breaks down, and toxins are released. These all result in a minimized appearance of “orange peel skin”.

Dr. Ava Shamban, an assistant professor of dermatology at UCLA, explains how coffee can be used as a remedy for cellulite. She says, "The theory behind caffeine is that it actually can reduce fat. It can enhance fat metabolism and also reduce some of the edema, or swelling that we get around the fat, so the skin appears smoother."

Along with the benefits of the caffeine, the coffee beans act as an exfoliant, removing dead skin, and firming and toning the skin. Not only will topical applications of coffee reduce the appearance of cellulite, it will also tone and give you all around healthy skin!

At Kalliste Shop, located at 10 Cedar Street, Dobbs Ferry, NY 10522, we offer coffee soap that is great for reducing cellulite. The coffee beans in this product exfoliate the skin while the caffeine drains fat. This organic handmade soap is great for your skin and is wonderfully scented. Our products are all natural and contain no chemicals or animal fat (as many soaps do). Come by the shop or visit our website, www.kallisteshop.com, for coffee soap to reduce your cellulite and get healthy skin!

Tea Tree Soap: Essential for Everyday Life

2012-05-15T08:03:00.000-07:00

If there is one thing everybody has in common, it is the battle for blemish-free skin. People spend hundreds of dollars on popular name brand soaps and acne fighting products with high hopes of having perfect skin. However, because of the artificial chemicals and animal fat that are in popular name brand products, it can actually make your skin worse. Skin is pretty sensitive, and scrubbing with a soap that has little to no natural oils in it can create blemishes and dry it out. There is a soap, however, that can take care of all your skin worries.

Tea tree oil is the most versatile oil when it comes to fighting off skin imperfections. The oil works as an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, which are great for clearing out all the dirt and oils that create blemishes like acne. When the tea tree oil is in a soap, it not only fights of acne, but helps get rid of dry skin. In fact, this soap can be used to help scalp dryness and get rid of dandruff. Since it is an anti-fungal, it soothes and helps eczema, Athlete's foot, and any other infection on the skin. Tea tree oil also has the characteristic of an antiseptic, so this soap can also be used on cuts and burns. Feeling sick? Use the soap in the bath and it may help lessen the symptoms of the cold and flu. Bugs also stand no chance against tea tree oil soaps. The soap is great to use on any bug bite; it soothes the bites and gets rid of them. A big plus to having this soap is in case someone acquires head lice. Use a little soap in your hair and the lice will be gone in no time. This one bar of soap can help in any skin crisis. Keeping a bar of tea tree oil soap around the house is essential so you are prepared for any skin crisis that makes its way in to your life.

Here at Kalliste, we have the tea tree and black clay soap that works wonders. The bars last a long time, and with the mix of tea tree oil and black clay, it detoxifies and cleans the skin. Daily use of the soap will get rid of existing blemishes, and help prevent future outbreaks. Our soaps are all handmade organic vegan soaps. There are no artificial chemicals or animal fat in any of our products. Before resorting to a well known brand from the nearest convenient store, try something all natural! The great smelling natural aroma of the soap and improved look and feel of your skin will rise above any other skin product.

Tackling Contemporary Issues Through Soap-Making!

2012-03-23T10:22:00.001-07:00

Recently, Kalliste was given the opportunity to spread the love for soap-making to a wonderful group of high-school students at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY! Students enrolled in the course, "Contemporary Issues in Science," had the opportunity to participate in a soap-making seminar hosted by our own wonderful owner Marie!

Students had the opportunity to create their own soap using all-natural ingredients such as olive oil, lye, and green tea extract. We were able to tie our soap-making seminar into these students class program by creating the soap bars for local veterans.
Tackling a "contemporary issue," through soap-making was an awesome way to incorporate our product and message into those in need in our local community. This was a great experience and not only was fun was had by all, but the students were able to help out people in need! We are happy to have had this opportunity to work with the Masters School and help out the community!

The Eco Social

2012-02-28T11:29:00.000-08:00

Here at Kalliste we were itching to create a fun meetup group to bring likeminded "Green," individuals together! We brainstormed and came up with "The Eco Social!" The Eco Social will be a networking and hang out group starting on Tuesday, March 13th 2012, and continuing ever other Tuesday following. So come join us at 7 pm, meet some cool ecofriendly business owners and other people, and have a glass of wine! Vintology Wines has been kind enough to offer us their sponsorship, and we are excited to start this partnership with them as we launch our new social group. We promise it will be a good time! Go Eco! :)

Custom soap for Holistic Health Coach - Heal 'N Glow!

2012-02-17T11:15:00.000-08:00

Joanna Puciata of Heal 'N Glow

Here at Kalliste Soap Shop, we are always thrilled to partner up with other individuals and businesses who aim to create a positive impact in the world. One of these people is Joanna Puciata, founder of Heal ‘N Glow, her own company focusing on holistic health coaching. Joanna focuses on helping each customer with his or her own personalized health plan, including a personalized skin care regimen, which is where we come in. When Joanna founded Heal 'N Glow, she did not realize that soap would be a product she needed to focus on. “I ignored the soaps, thinking there can be nothing in them that can harm. Wrong!,”

Joanna soon realized that soaps could be just as harmful as improperly crafted cosmetics and facial products. Going with her belief that “Anything you put into the skin, including the products you wash with, goes into the bloodstream where there are no enzymes to help the body cope with the toxins,” Joanna realized the dangers to our bodies of chemical and animal made soap, and partnered with Kalliste to offer her customers a truly clean inside and out life experience.

Tea Tree & Black Clay Soap

Joanna’s Holistic health coaching teaches her clients how to be completely healthy in every aspect of their lives. In her own words, “I counsel people into health, but for me that means holistically, from top to bottom. Wholesome diet, stress reduction, exercise, exfoliation, detoxification, good skincare including good soaps made out of rich butters and oils, without artificial fragrances and colors gives a brand new quality of life, and allows us to lead a healthy life.”

Oatmeal Vanilla Soap

At Kalliste, we produce personalized private label soap that work for Joanna and her business. The scents of these special soaps include oatmeal vanilla, tea tree and black clay, and Candy Land glycerin. Oatmeal vanilla is one of our signature popular soaps, it gently exfoliates while soothing dry and rashy skin. The tea tree and black clay is a great body and face soap, as it naturally helps with acne, using tea tree oil as a natural astringent and black clay to draw out impurities. Candy Land glycerin soap is a custom Heal ‘N Glow product, unscented with fun colors this soap is great for children or anyone with very sensitive skin.

We wish Joanna the best of luck as she continues to change the world one healthy client at a time!

Thanksgiving at the Soap Shop

2011-11-23T11:52:00.000-08:00

The season of holidays has arrived and we have some great things in store and in stock! Our recently added Pumpkin Pie Soap has been the best selling gift item for the season, making a cute addition to a holiday gift basket or even just on its own in a clear baggie adorned with a gift message and some ribbon or in a suiting little bakery box. The sweet and spicy aromas of this adorable pie soap catch every customers nose as they walk in, and then smell even more delightful in the bath and shower as they lather up. This pie soap, paired with a cupcake soap or two make a great gift for visiting someone over the holidays, especially if they have a sweet tooth or enjoy making pastries!
We've also updated our website to a sleeker, more modern look. Like the previous website you have the option of assembling a Gift Basket of gourmet soap online, which we will then decorate and deliver for you, or make it available for pickup at the shop! A new feature on the site however is our gourmet soap Gift Certificate. Choose any amount you would like to gift and then enter your recipients email address with a personalized message and your certificate gets emailed to them immediately!

This Thanksgiving we would like to say Thank You to the Village of Scarsdale. Kalliste Soap Shop opened its doors 7 months ago and was immediately welcomed by the community. We have built so many relationships in that short time as well as a loyal customer following. We are happy to share with you today that we are now in 14 stores nationwide and expanding to more!

A Bar of Hope

2011-08-02T13:33:00.000-07:00

Do you ever wonder what happens to those tiny bars of soap in hotel showers after they have been used only a few times by a guest? Does it get thrown away? Not if the non-profit Global Soap Project can help it.

The Global Soap Project reprocesses and distributes those barely used bars to vulnerable communities in Afghanistan, Ghana, Haiti, Kenya, Uganda, Cameroon and Swaziland, preventing millions of avoidable deaths due to poor hygiene. To date, 75 tons of that soap has been saved and distributed worldwide.

Kalliste Soap Shop, a local Scarsdale soap manufacturer and retailer, is joining in GSP’s ongoing efforts and is kicking off its collaboration by hosting a Cocktail Party to raise awareness and funds for GSP.

“The resourcefulness of this project is remarkable. We are behind them 100% and will do whatever we can to help.” says Marie Labropoulos, owner of Kalliste. As part of its ongoing contribution to GSP, Kalliste Soap Shop will introduce a new scented bar, Bar of Hope, as part of its collection of gourmet, organic, and vegan handmade soaps and will be donating 50% of the profits to GSP. “I’m really excited about the opportunity GSP gives us to help out those less fortunate, and eager to play a role in eradicating preventable disease around the world,” says Labropoulos.

The event will be held on August 11th, 2011 starting, 5:30pm till 8:00pm at Kalliste’s retail store on 30 Garth Rd., Scarsdale, NY 10583.

Antibacterial Soap a Health Risk

2011-06-06T10:07:00.000-07:00

Natural soap has long been used in effectively getting rid of germs and bacteria, but in recent years there has been a rise in the use of household products containing antibacterial agents. The American Medical Association (AMA) has been monitoring the use of these household items and warns against them, stating that today's elevated uses of such products could create bacteria resistant to both antibiotics and the antibacterial soaps themselves.
When antibacterial products first appeared on the consumer market there were only a dozen sanitizing products available. Today the market for antibacterial products has grown to hundreds of consumer household products from hand soaps, lotions and toothpastes to even food container packaging, pillows, mattresses and full bathrooms outfitted with Tricoslan, an anti-microbial agent. While bacteria become resistant, scientists fear that a germ-free household environment may result in our immune systems becoming weakened. A number of studies have shown that the development of allergies, asthma and skin problems in children is linked to their having been raised in household environments that are too sterile.
Some may argue that the use of an antibacterial soap may not even have the antibacterial effect which it is intended to. Dr. Stuart B. Levy of Tufts University School of Medicine states "To achieve a 90% death rate, wild-type E. coli required exposure to 150 µg/mL of triclosan in soap for 2 hours at 37ºC... Most importantly, the time, temperature, and amount needed to kill the bacteria greatly exceeded the average 5-second hand washing performed by most people."
Much of what is available and popularly used today is called soap but cannot in fact be categorized as soap. According to the FDA these detergent bars, comprised of chemical cleansers, foaming agents and surfactants, cannot be called soap and are otherwise named beauty or bath bars. Real soap is defined by the FDA as being "of an alkali salt of fatty acids and whose detergent properties are due to these alkali-fatty acid compounds". Soap's soluble fats (vegetable, fruit or animal) are introduced to an alkaline substance and undergo a process known as saponification over a period of time in which the fat molecules turn into the hard sudsing alkaline bar called soap! The long chain molecules of soap are lipophillic (non polar) on one end and hydrophillic (polar) on the other, thereby attracting and dislodging both dirt and oils as well as water to the molecule and then rinsing clean off the surface and down the drain.
The pH scale which measures the acidity or alkalinity of substances measures from 0 on the acidic end to 14 on the basic or alkaline end with a neutral pH at 7. Natural soap measures between 9 to 9.5 on the pH scale making it too alkaline an environment for bacteria to live in and multiply. At the soap shop plenty of people ask whether keeping a natural bar of soap at the sink for hand-washing can spread germs and bacteria. The truth is that a natural soap bar is not a suitable environment for most microbes and carries less personal and public health risks than pH balanced detergent bars and antibacterial hand washes and is indeed the better option for your hands and your environment.
