In the past I have not had much opportunity to travel. Now I am experiencing new places, new scenery and new cultures. I find it all quite fascinating. Recently I travelled to the mountain region of Costa Rica living in a small village not in a ‘tourist’ region. This allowed me to learn a lot about the ‘real’ culture of the area. While Costa Rica is somewhat torn between the old time-honored traditions and new modern ways in most cases they will maintain many of the traditional values.

I had friends who came to Costa Rica to get married about two years ago; however the resorts that cater to the tourist weddings also cater to the typical North American type ceremony and celebration. What I learned of the Traditional Historical Costa Rican Wedding ceremony there are a lot of symbolic rituals that are far from what the North Americans are accustomed to. While Costa Rica is somewhat torn between the old time-honored traditions and new modern ways in most cases they will maintain many of the traditional values.

The Bride wears Black…. An elegant silk black dress with a lace veil that offers a sharp contrast to the typical crisp and clean White we see on the cover of the bridal magazines and in the movies. In North America the Black dress would almost be deemed as inappropriate for a wedding as this would be more symbolic of a funeral. Here in the Costa Rican culture this school of thought is not the case.

The Groom wears a shirt with detailed embroidery on it. This is a garment that was crafted by the bride. Historically this was done by hand as a symbol of their dedication to their fiancé. During the ceremony there is a gesture by the groom where he passes thirteen gold coins to his bride to symbolize his acceptance of his role as the provider and head of the family.

Their receptions are quite the celebrations. They are a friendly warm people who value family a great deal The more wedding guests you have the more blessed you are. Every member of the family will be in attendance and the Spanish-Latin music will be lively and loud and carry on until late into the night. Food will be available in abundance.

One of the greatest curses you can have is to be able to use a skill for everyone but yourself. Some of us are like that with communication. We can write wonderfully, and tell people just what to say in any situation. Many people come to us for advice, and by the words of wisdom we give them; you would think that we would be a famous orator. Nonetheless, in public speaking engagements, some of us struggle.

That is why, when we was asked to give the best man wedding toast at someone’s wedding, we may be terrified. Perhaps we have feared public speaking event of all kinds for a long time, but wedding toasts are one of the worst. If you are giving a public presentation at a business meeting, for example, you can always console yourself with the fact you may not like your coworkers. If you are giving a report at school, you can always try to come up with an extra credit project to prove that, despite the fact that you can not communicate in public, you still know what you're talking about. With wedding toasts, however, you are on your own. You are standing up in front of a group of assembled friends and family, and you had better not mess up.

So the best way to overcome our fears is to have fun with the toast! Be silly if you have to, even loony… it will take the pressure off and you may even be a hit! Or use the wedding favors on the table as a prop and create your own show!

I have always believed in the importance of getting nice gifts for people. After all, what is the point of a gift-giving holiday if you just go through the motions? Giving gifts, if you ask me, is an almost sacred obligation. It is a thing that brings people together, after all. Communities are strengthened, ties are forged, and everyone leaves feeling a little bit happier – or so the theory goes.

This is why I have been having so much trouble picking out wedding presents recently. I'm getting to the age where my friends are getting married in droves, and yet I can't find the perfect wedding favor for everyone. Of course, there is an easy solution. Everyone signs up with a wedding registry after all, so the most obvious thing is to buy something that is on that list. The problem is that wedding registries seem so insincere. There is nothing personal, for example, about getting someone a candle wedding favor or non personalized wedding favors. If you ask me, an elegant wedding favor should have a more personal touch.

The problem is that it is difficult to come up with ideas for wedding favors for a friend or loved one. If you are looking for a gift for a friend, it is usually pretty easy. You'll know enough about that friend and his or her likes and dislikes to pick something good out. With wedding favors, however, it isn't at all the same. Usually, you know one person much better than the other. In addition, most people don't have the same tastes. What might be a good bridesmaid present isn't necessarily a good present for the groom. That is why so many people take the easy way out and go through the registry to pick out their wedding reception present. Otherwise, the choices are very difficult.

Of course, you can always get them something fancy and beautiful that you know they need. Getting engraved wedding favors is often a good idea. For example, you can get them a fancy calligraphy set or stationary set, or consider handsome photo album wedding favors, or even silver plated wedding favors. All of these favors, however, are somewhat risky. It is difficult to know if someone else has already gotten them the same thing or not. A lot of my friends are surprised when they find out that I work so many wedding planner jobs. In many ways, I am not the type you expect to be involved in the field. I don't really go in for formality, and I don't like big crowds of people. Nevertheless, I love wedding traditions. One of the nice things about weddings is the place that people give for poetry in the event. Traditions like releasing live doves or butterflies, having toasts to honor the bride and groom, and of course the whole ritual of giving the bride away, are quite charming. The wedding is meant to be a live embodiment of the commitment that the bride and groom are making to each other, and wedding traditions reflect this.

Of course, there is a lot of room in wedding tradition for your own variations. In Jewish wedding traditions, for example, people carry the bride and groom around on chairs, all while dancing and singing. Some families have a wedding tradition of getting extremely drunk at every event. Other families are much more sober, but love to sing.

It doesn't really matter what you are into – it only matters that you do it as a way of bringing everyone together. If you have a particularly eloquent family, sometimes you can have several rounds of toasts. If, on the other hand, you've a group who loves to party, your wedding tradition should involve live music and dancing late into the night. A wedding is a festival, and the most extravagant one that most people have in their whole life. There's plenty of room for the bride and groom to give free rein to their whimsy, their ideas for wedding favors or the reception tables, to the photography style.

Of course, a traditional wedding also has its charms. Many people like the sobriety of a commitment ritual. Even people who I wouldn't expect to have a very serious and formal wedding often go in for this. You see, in the modern world there is so much less ritual and formality than ever before. Many people view marriage as sacred in a way that they don't view many other things. Wedding traditions are a way to cement the bonds of matrimony, and sometimes a wedding can make the most impact when it is an extremely sober and straightforward event. Let’s be honest, us girls think about and plan the details of our wedding from when we are just pre-teens watching the romantic movies on TV.
