Black doesn't mean boring...

I don't profess to know much about fashion, but I do know that one of the key trends this season is Monochrome {I know this because the clothes in shops and glossy mags tell me so, clever, right?!}. I also know that I wear a lot of black, and seem to be naturally drawn to monochrome colour schemes {if we can call black and white a scheme?!}. I even prefer black and white photography. To me, black is far from boring.

As a busy working single Mum, I need clothes that are smart and flattering, yet effortless to wear and easy to coordinate. With this in mind, and inspired by some new work trousers I recently purchased, I burnt a hole in my virtual credit card and did some online wish-list shopping...

I tend to use my nail polish and make up to inject a bit more colour vibrancy into my day to day appearance - I probably have more nail polish than I do clothes! I'm trying to make more informed choices about the clothes I buy, opting for classic, simple pieces that will last, and hoping I have the pennies to supplement them every once in a while if I feel uninspired.

And just to prove I don't always wear black... I totally fell in love with these grey studded ballet shoes! Grey is a colour...honestly, it is!

25 facts about me...

1) I'm a July baby and was always the youngest in my year at school. Having a birthday just after the start of the summer holidays meant I never had to endure sitting through lessons though!

2) I am absolutely terrified of spiders. I simply can not deal with them. Tiny ones are just about bearable, but any bigger than my thumbnail and I'll run out of the room screaming. I am trying my hardest to hide my fear from Jamie - I think perhaps I shall train him to search and destroy?!

3) I'm newly single for the first time in 9 years. 2013 has served up some major life changes, but I'm looking upon them as a chance for a fresh start and a new beginning.

4) I take hundreds of photos. I Instagram constantly, and fill up my iPhone memory on a monthly basis, seeing the photographic opportunity in almost every moment. I simply point and click, but I love the feeling of capturing a moment and preserving it for posterity.

5) I paint my nails on an almost daily basis.

6) I haven't ever been to Paris, and I am absolutely desperate to go. I want to be a horribly stereotypical tourist and take hundreds of photos of the Eiffel Tower whilst munching on a baguette.

7) I'm actually pretty shy, although no one who meets me ever believes that. I've grown in confidence as I've grown up, and going to University was certainly the catalyst that boosted my self esteem and gradual self belief. Being confident is not something that comes naturally to me.

8) I laugh a lot, and have a pretty immature and sarcastic sense of humour. Fart jokes are almost guaranteed to make me laugh. Reading Damn You Auto Correct makes me giggle until my sides hurt.

9) I was quite the tomboy when I was little. I used to play with two boys that lived on my street, making mud pies, building dens in the bushes outside my childhood home, and generally getting rather grubby. I also used to make them play 'Mums & Dad's'...I was always the Dad!

10) I have this little sister Lucy. She is small and very funny. Sometimes we take silly photos of ourselves.*

11) I'm a bookworm, and when I have the time I love nothing more than to immerse myself into a fictional world.

12) I have never broken a bone in my body {hope I'm not tempting fate}, despite being ludicrously clumsy.

13) I have lived in Surrey my whole life, although I am often surprised when strangers comment on my 'posh' accent.

14) I got my first tattoo in 2012, and am already eager to get another. Sorry Mum!

15) Being a Mother is the hardest thing I've ever done, whilst simultaneously also being the very best. Nothing can truly prepare you for what you will endure for your little person. Jamie will always be my No.1 man.

16) I really love music, and how instantly it can transform my mood. My heart most definitely lies with drum & bass.

17) Speaking of music, I went through a 'goth'/'emo' stage in my teens, and drove my parents crazy with the sounds of heavy metal blaring out of my stereo. Even now if I hear a System of a Down, Slipknot or Korn track it is an instant hit of nostalgia.

18) I would dislike living in a city. I need to be somewhere with fresh air, near green fields, woodland, winding country lanes and small, cosy pubs.

19) Having said that, I was never much of an outdoorsy person {although I am more so now, especially since having had Jamie, who loves to be outside}. My Mum used to call me a troglodyte because I would be hidden away inside all through the summer!

20) I am utterly obsessed with Christmas. It is such a magical time of year.

21) I didn't realise I had a 'type', but over Christmas a close {male} friend identified whist watching MTV that I appear to - 'rough and ready', tattooed/pierced, stubble, a skinhead or messy hair and a toned body. Well, what can I say?!

23) I have a fair amount of phobias, but by far the most irrational are my {genuine} fears of cheesecake and dinosaurs.

24) I'm pretty obsessed with Pinterest, and 'pin' almost daily.

25) I really like the 'Keep Calm' trend, however annoying or outdated it may be now. It is just a motto that appeals to me, I find it inspiring {my dedicated Pinterest board probably attests to that}.

October Favourites {2012}

I've got stuck in somewhat of a make up and beauty rut of late, and most of the products that feature in my October favourites are actually things that have been trusted staples for a while now, but I often forget to mention. I've been {very loosely} trying to operate on a 'one in, one out' beauty product basis, which often means some things get overlooked whilst I desperately scrape the dregs of another product up.

MAKE UP

MAC Eye Shadow Quad {self made}

I'm trying to make more of an effort with my eye make up again, and whilst daily work make is applied more with ease and speed in mind, if I'm off out I've tried to use more than just a simple wash of shadow over the lid. I've dug out my {self made} MAC eyeshadow quads again, and my 'neutrals' are always my most used. Satin Taupe is easily my favourite MAC eye shadow, and looks great paired with Patina, with Shroom in the inner corner and as a brow highlight. I often use Carbon to line my eyes, or darken up the crease and outer corner shadow of an evening. Simple, reliable and effortless.

Clinique High Impact Mascara

I've lost track of the amount of mini Clinique High Impact Mascaras I have tried over the years, so often are they included as a GWP or magazine freebie - which is how I acquired the most recent tube. Previously I've been significantly underwhelmed, and chucked them in the bin after one or two uses, however, I've persevered this time and actually ended up wearing this mascara almost every single day of October {there's a fair amount of product in this small tube actually too!}. It separates my lashes well, holds a good curl and provides definition that doesn't flake. I have found it transfers under my bottom lashes slightly throughout the day, and wouldn't purchase a full size, but I've enjoyed actually using one up for once!

Essie Bahama Mama

Another month, another Essie nail polish. I am fast becoming addicted to Essie, and would quite happily contemplate streamlining my collection and have it largely compiled of just the beautiful shades in the Essie diffusion line. Bahama Mama is just stunning, a "warm, rich, creamy dark plum" that perfectly complements autumn, and makes me feel more stylish and elegant. I love darker shades on me, and find it to look good on long or short nails.

Korres Pomegranate Lip Butter

As a recent convert to the infamous Korres Lip Butters, I too can now loudly sing their praises. I don't think they are the most hydrating lip balms I've ever tried, however, they leave my lips feeling soft and subtly tinted - I do love a good multi-tasker! They smell great and the pigmentation is surprisingly good for a tint. These have fast become a handbag and desk essential for me.

Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal in 004 Taupe & 005 Nude

These purchases were entirely enabled by Meg {stalk her on YouTube, Twitter or her blog}, and I'm so pleased I got hold of them. Marketed as "long-wear waterproof eye liner" the 'Scandaleyes' are perfect for wearing along the waterline, or even for smudging out and wearing as an eyeshadow or base. They have a soft and creamy texture, and really do have decent longevity - I wear the Nude shade on my waterline to help me look more awake, and it's still detectable in some form at the end of the day - albeit not quite as perfect as when it was applied. The Taupe shade lends itself perfectly to a gentle smokey eye, and it's dirty mauve brown tones are fantastic for autumn style.

Revlon Lip Butter in Berry Smoothie & 17 Mirror Shine in Belle

I've been leaning toward more berry toned, darker lipsticks now that autumn is upon us, and dug out some staple favourites from my humble collection. Both of these shades are effortlessly wearable and help me to look {and feel} instantly more 'together'. I find it easier to coordinate the rest of my make up when I'm wearing a slightly darker, more berry toned lipstick too, so do tend to gravitate toward them.

SKINCARE

Mama Mio OMega Body Buff*

You all know I like a good scrubbing, and there aren't many scrubs I don't like or haven't used. However, I'd never before tried a scrub that is designed to be applied to DRY skin, BEFORE you shower - enter the OMega Body Buff. The pumice grains are tiny, and the scrub feels 'dry' - in comparison to my normal sugar/salt scrubs - meaning that it's not messy or sliding off all over the place whilst you hop around the bathroom buffing yourself. It's a great time-saving product, that I tend to apply whilst waiting for the shower to warm up, and it leaves my skin feeling smooth and actually fairly moisturised. As scrubs go it's pretty pricey, but used once or twice a week I think it's a great product.

HAIRCARE

Schwarzkopf Professional BC Oil Miracle Finishing Treatment*

I've been using this Oil Miracle Finishing Treatment for months now, and really love it. Initially I preferred my Moroccan Oil, so was attempting to use this up first, although I've ended up rather loving it, and my hair feels so much nicer when I use this. I believe there is actually a 'light' version of this product, however, I find this to be lightweight and barely detectable after use. It's a relatively thick oil, that I run through the ends of my hair when wet, before blow drying. My hair absorbs it instantly, it helps to keep my dry ends soft and tamed, and makes styling a little more streamlined. I like the lingering scent when I waft my hair too, it's soft and clean but not overpowering.

HONOURABLE MENTION

iPhone 5

Early October meant the time had finally come for me to upgrade my phone contract, and I opted for the newly released iPhone 5 {after much terrible service, delays and faffing by O2}. I must admit to not being overly excited by new technology, I just wanted a faster, sleeker phone, and I've got to say it was worth the wait to get my hands on.

To keep my shiny new phone safe, I invested in this gorgeous padded case, purchased from eBay {link to seller}. It's made out of a lovely Cath Kidston fabric 'Hampton Rose', and fastens with a loop and button at the top. It's excellent quality and superbly well made, meaning my phone is protected as well as stylishly housed.

If the packaging and presentation of this product wasn't so darn sleek and stunning, I would apologise for the photo heavy post. However, I fear even the final selection of the 30+ photos I snapped of this beautiful creation, do not quite do it the justice I feel it deserves. The length of this post, for just one lipstick, is testament to my adoration for it too I am sure.

Pink Apricot {No.301} is one of twelve refined shades from the Burberry Beauty AW12 collection. The Lip Velvet's are "effortless long wear matte" lipsticks, with richly pigmented and hydrating shades, that leave a velvety finish to the lips. The lightweight, water resistant formula offers impressive longevity, without feeling heavy or overbearing.

For my first foray into the world of Burberry Beauty products, I was unapologetically impressed. From the subtle and classic Burberry print design on the packaging, the satisfying magnetic snap closure of the lid, to the embossing on the bullet itself, this product oozes high end make up sex appeal. It feels exquisite and excellent quality before you even apply it to your lips - and may I also add, the scent is reminiscent of Parma Violets, if a little more sophisticated.

As for the shade itself, Pink Apricot is indeed an accurate description - think warm, brown toned pink, combined with a gentle apricot, to create an incredibly wearable and flattering shade, that has the perfect amount of colour for these dreary days. From the shade to the packaging, this lipstick makes me feel less like a kid playing dress up, and more like the adult that I suppose I should embrace being.

When applied to the lips, the consistency is thick, yet glides on smoothly, and I find this to be surprisingly hydrating for a matte lipstick, making it not only effortless to apply, but comfortable to wear too. Burberry Beauty designed this with a "breathable, protective and elegant" finish in mind, which I think they most certainly have achieved. I can also testify to it's long wearing properties pretty successfully, for the swatch I initially applied still remained visible after 3 washes with vigorous scrubbing each time - impressive.

NOTD: Essie Navigate Her

I suspect I am breaking the 'rules' of autumn with this pastel murky green shade, but sometimes that just has to be done. Essie 'Navigate Her'* is a shade I would normally tend to reserve for warmer months, given it's light pastel hues and natural ode to springtime. However, I often tend to wear a lot of black once the weather gets cooler, and like to brighten things up with coloured nails and accessories...plus, rules are meant to be broken, right?!

Essie describe this shade as a "light, bright green", although I would say perhaps a milky, pastel green, reminiscent of pistachios, is more appropriate. Either way, it's a really unique colour that I have worn rather a lot already this month. Opaque in two thin coats, and with great longevity {especially when used in conjunction with a decent top coat}, I think it's a great antidote to dull, dreary days.

What Do I Think?

Shampoo and conditioner reviews are such a personal thing, and therefore somewhat difficult to write. Our hair is completely different, and whilst it's easy for me to say that my hair is medium, colour treated, with dry ends and oily roots, what works for me might not necessarily work for you. As such, I always think product reviews should be treated with some degree of caution. Having said that, these two products were consistently good, and I personally think they would work well for any colour treated hair type. Organic Care Systems is a brand I've heard little about, quite surprising given how effective I found the products to be. As the name would suggest, the brand favours organic, natural ingredients, and their products are free from parabens and all other nasties. The brand is also completely cruelty free. The Power Build range is designed to naturally strengthen and protect colour treated hair, whilst providing volume and nourishment, and helping to prevent colour fade. The shampoo {250ml} lathers well, and left my hair squeaky clean and relatively tangle free - a rare find indeed - and the conditioner {200ml}, although quite thin in consistency, provided much needed moisture and nourishment. The products smell clean and fresh, as if I'd just walked out of a salon, and my hair was soft and bouncy, with a nice shine.

I've a confession. I'm going to come right out and just say it. I love glitter. Especially on my nails {even if it is a bitch to remove}. It delights the child in me, the lover of all things girly and sparkly, and at times, I just can't get enough.

I believe this No7 Stay Perfect Glitter Top Coat in Gold may have been limited edition, and is no longer available, in which case I am terribly sorry for posting about it so late. However, I'm starting to feel that Christmas vibe, and what better way to conjure up more festive feelings than gold glitter?! I mean, just LOOK at it, it's so pretty:

For this NOTD, I paired one coat of No7 Stay Perfect Glitter Top Coat in 'Gold' with two coats of Nails Inc 'Black Taxi', and a coat of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri top coat. This polish is packed full of small gold glitter particles intermingled with larger chunks of hexagonal gold glitter, and is simply mesmerising to look at.

What Do I Think?

There is nothing nicer than being able to recreate a spa experience in your own bathroom. If you can ignore the baby toys dotted around the edge of the bath, and the layer of dust that you keep meaning to clean off of the windowsill, placing some scented candles about the place and playing some relaxing music can certainly give the temporary illusion of a pampering haven. I always associate spa's with clean and zesty citrus scents, and of course indulgently luxurious textures. This particular range of Mandara Spa products is inspired by the revitalising fragrance of an 'Island Paradise', and let's face it, who wouldn't want to even momentarily escape to one of those?! As a lover of exfoliating, the Intensive Body Scrub is perfect for me, it's creamy consistency is packed full of tiny, grainy particles, that slough off dead skin cells leaving behind soft and healthy looking skin. A little blob of product goes a surprisingly long way - although do take care because the bottom of the shower will get rather clogged as you rinse off - and the scent lingers delicately on the skin for a while after.

Whenever I get the chance to lower myself into a deliciously relaxing hot bath of an evening, believe me I do, and the Pampering Bath Soak is a wonderful product to pep you up if you're feeling in need of some serious TLC. It's thick and luxurious, with the most mouthwatering lemon and grapefruit scent, it creates the perfect amount of bubbles and envelopes you in a soft, aromatic warmth. My skin feels delightfully soft and fragrant after use. There is only one problem with these products...when I open my eyes I'm actually there, in my slightly grubby bathroom, with someone banging on the door because they need a wee...not in the blissful Island Paradise I'd drifted off to in my imagination.

Let us not beat around the bush here, Hydraluron {created by the sciencey skincare folk at Indeed Labs} has received a fair amount of attention in the beauty industry, although I personally feel it is well deserving of even more...

Hydraluron is a moisture boosting serum marketed at dehydrated skin - your skin can be dehydrated at any age, although this product may be a particular favourite for more mature skins, which tend to be the most prone to dehydration. Containing the wonder ingredient, hyaluronic acid, it is designed to be used in conjunction with all of your other regular lotions and potions, and should increase their moisturising properties too, by encouraging more effective absorption in the skin.

So, how does it actually work? Could this unassuming white tube, ensconced in a bright pink box, really hold the answer to dehydrated skins prayers? Well, starting at the beginning seems as good a place as any, so let me first explain what hyaluronic acid is. Occurring naturally in our bodies, hyaluronic acid is what helps the skin to retain water {hydration} - it can actually "hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water". The younger the skin, the more hyaluronic acid, hence why it is an increasingly popular choice of ingredient for 'anti aging' topical skincare treatments. When the skin's levels of hyaluronic acid become depleted, skin can become dehydrated, which can often manifest itself as dry flaky skin, or oily, dull skin. Which is where Hydraluron comes in...I can't comment on whether it is in fact the "world's purest hyaluronic acid from the Netherlands" {although I'm going there next month, so perhaps I can verify this?!}, but what I can comment on is the potency of this serum, and that it certainly packs a pretty impressive punch in it's attempt to "restore optimal hydration levels". It's almost certainly a more affordable method of providing dehydrated skin with a much needed moisture surge, that negates the need for invasive injections or the popping of pills.

My skin drank this serum up, right from the very first application, and my skin looked almost instantly brighter. I found my moisturiser was absorbed more effectively after use too, and my skin didn't 'drink up' my foundation as much as it usually would - dehydrated skin will quite literally suck all moisture from products applied topically. You don't need very much product at all to cover your entire face and neck, too much and it will feel sticky. I've noticed an improvement in the look and texture of my skin since using this, and although I don't think I look any younger {which wasn't necessarily what I was after}, I definitely know my skin is more hydrated.

Be aware that the packaging itself is slightly misleading, for out of the average sized box comes a slightly less averagely sized tube {30ml}, although what it lacks in physical size it certainly makes up for in its effectiveness. The box itself however, is packed full of informative facts and figures about the product, it's origins and it's results. I'm certainly very taken by Hydraluron, despite my initial scepticism, and would highly recommend it to anyone who feels their skin could do with a little more hydration.

What Do I Think?

Let's start with the positives. I really like and respect Korres as a brand, I admire their ethos and what they represent. I love the packaging, the simplicity of the bottle and typography on the label appeal to me, and the box is sturdy and informative. I also love that the products can boast about this:

However, for me that is where the positives have to end. Unfortunately, this particular product just did not agree with my skin, and actually caused me to breakout quite significantly - creating tiny little whiteheads or bumps under the surface of my skin, all over my face {normally my breakouts are on my chin or along my jawline}. I discontinued use to be sure it was this cleanser causing the problems, and sure enough once I stopped so did the spots. It hasn't deterred me from trying out Korres products, but I will be sure to investigate the ingredients further in an attempt to pinpoint what my skin disagreed with. The gel consistency and gentle fragrance appealed to me, and it couldn't be any simpler to use, it's just such a shame this time it didn't work out.

I buy my Korres products when visiting my local Waitrose (instore or online), however, you can also find them stocked online at ASOS, Feel Unique and Look Fantastic (to name but a few).

How Much Does It Cost?

This bottle was £15.00 (for 200ml) - a pretty big dent in my purse considering I didn't like it.

Would I Recommend It?

I sadly can't recommend this particular product, however, I do recommend Korres as a brand, and this one experience most certainly won't deter me.

September Favourites {2012}

"Where have you been, and what have you been doing?" I hear you cry - at least...I hope you did *awkward pause*. Another month has crept past, and I've barely blogged at all. For the first week of the month I was in Vancouver on a work trip; the second week was wiped out by the fog of jet lag, a panic attack and exhaustion {my insomnia has kicked in again, oh joy}; the third week was spent recovering from the first and second week; which leads us to the fourth and final week of the month, in which I did actually manage to publish a post. I would apologise for my absence, I suppose that would be the polite thing to do, however, sometimes life truly does just get in the way, and catching up on missed time with my little man got took precedence.

The trip to Vancouver did allow for some sneaky duty free and beauty shopping {a whistle-stop tour of Sephora and the Pacific Centre beauty hall}, and the majority of my splurges feature heavily in this months favourites.

SKINCARE

Avéne Light Hydrating Cream SPF20

I posted a mini review of this Avéne moisturiser in my Currently Using: Skincare Edition post this week. Suitable for normal to combination and sensitive skin types, this wouldn't normally be a product I would try. I subscribed to a magazine recently purely because, for the price of the subscription {£8.00}, you received a gift of four Avéne products worth significantly more! This moisturiser was part of the set, and I've really been enjoying the gentle hydration it gives my skin, and having SPF20 is an added bonus as far as I'm concerned, even if we might have bid the sunshine a reluctant farewell.

Avéne Micellar Lotion

Acquired via the Avéne set I mentioned above, this Micellar Lotion was the product I was most excited about trying. As I mentioned in my recent skincare post, I use this product to remove the bulk of my face and eye make up prior to a more thorough cleanse. It's the perfect solution to quicker make up removal for lazy ladies like myself, is gentle on the skin and eyes, and removes even stubborn waterproof mascara without the need for rubbing.

Caudalíe Beauty Elixir

Almost as soon as I was through the doors of Sephora in Vancouver, this little beauty from Caudalíe dropped happily into my basket. I couldn't resist the temptation, as it glinted at me innocently from the bottom shelf, the lure of it was too much for me. I'm pretty sure there is something addictive in this little bottle of joy, because I can't stop spritzing it all over my face, I find it very calming.

MAKE UP

Chanel Nail Colour in Suspicious {561}

You've got to hand it to whoever designed Gatwick Airport's World Duty Free...making people walk past the beautiful stands of high end make up on their way to an early morning 9 hour flight is just asking for trouble...which is how I happened to find myself lusting over the nail polishes from the Chanel Autumn 2012 collection. I had to join the long queue at the tills to buy some travel plug adaptors, and I mean, it would've been rude not to buy some Chanel at the same time...right?! Suspicious is a stunning raspberry pink, the perfect shade to transition us from the warmth of late summer to the crispness of early autumn and beyond. Sure, the longevity is pretty diabolical, and yes you expect more for your money when you're buying Chanel, but it was a colour I just couldn't refuse, and an indulgence that warmed the soul.

Essie Angora Cardi

I featured Angora Cardi by Essie in a recent NOTD post, after sampling it when I stayed at Lydia's house last month. I completely fell in love with the dreamy creamy purple/rose shade, and promptly went out and purchased my own bottle. From the new diffusion line, this polish boasts the 'new' Essie formulation and the wider brush, making it an absolute dream to apply. Fully opaque in just two thin coats, this lasts really well on me when used in conjunction with a decent topcoat, and I've worn it almost exclusively this month.

Fresh Sugar Kisses Mini Lip Duo

As I stood at the till, chatting with the salesperson and cursing aloud at the absence of a Sephora in the UK, the beauty junkie inside of me literally squealed in delight when I was told I could sign up to be a 'Beauty Insider' and receive some freebies that day {please note, this was probably also due to the rather excessive amount of $ I handed over for my splurges}. I'd heard good things about the Fresh Sugar lip treatments, so was thrilled when the salesperson popped this Mini Duo into my black and white stripey bag. The Sugar Lip Treatment smells divine, all sugary, fruity and citrusy, so fresh and clean, and although it's not incredibly long wearing, I do find it hydrating and a pleasure to apply. The Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment leaves a delicate pink tint on the lips, with a subtle healthy sheen. Both products boast SPF15 as an extra bonus, and the packaging feels high quality and luxurious. I can wholeheartedly recommend either of these to keep your lips hydrated on a long haul flight too.

Liz Earle Brow Pencil and Liz Earle Brow & Eyeliner Brush*

Brow maintenance is something I've admitted I'm lazy with before. It's not that I don't want my brows to look nice, it's just that it adds another step to my already tight for time beauty routine of a morning. However, I believe I may have discovered a low maintenance quick fix answer to my eyebrow grooming prayers - enter the Liz Earle Brow & Eyeliner Brush and the Liz Earle Brow Pencil in Fair. The brow brush is perfect for taming my wayward brows into place, and the shade of the pencil is perfect for filling in any sparse looking gaps without being too obvious. The pencil is soft and water resistant, it doesn't fade or transfer throughout the day, and is certainly a product I will repurchase.

MAC Well Dressed Powder Blush

Try as I might to stray away from this blush, I just can't help but find myself drawn back to it's soft pink charms. A quick stroll around the MAC store in Vancouver led to me handing over yet more hard earned $ for my third or fourth MAC Well Dressed repurchase. It's such an easy, wearable shade of pink, with a tiny hint of shimmer, that makes my cheeks look effortlessly flushed and my overall complexion appear healthier. What's not to love?!

HAIRCARE

YUKO Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner*

Yuko are not a brand I am overly familiar with, and I'm guessing most of my readers won't be either. I'd had a selection of products from their Anti-Frizz range sat on my bathroom shelf for a little too long before I finally got around to trying them out and I've been pleasantly surprised by how much I've enjoyed using them. Although not overly frizzy, when left to it's own devices my hair can be wavy and wayward, so a little extra control never goes amiss. Both the shampoo and conditioner smell clean and fresh, and leave my dry, frazzled hair feeling clean, soft, well nourished and unexpectedly light. I'll definitely do a more in depth review soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

Denman Be-Bop Massage Brush*

Another haircare product that I've been meaning to mention for some time is a funky looking palm sized plastic massage brush from Denam, named the Be-Bop. Designed to be used to massage the scalp when applying shampoo, I've instead preferred to use it for combing through my hair when rinsing out conditioner in the shower. Its many bristles stimulate the scalp in a gentle way, detangling my hair and when used a few times a week, I find it helps to keep those dreaded white flakes away {I suffer with a dry scalp occasionally}.

PERFUME

Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb

Admittedly my biggest Sephora splurge, Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb has been on my perfume wishlist for well over 4 years. The over-excitement at finally being in a Sephora, combined with a small amount of time and a large amount of recklessness saw me making a totally indulgent purchase, but with no regret. The floral scent of this perfume is so utterly perfect, and I am so glad I finally took the plunge.

HONOURABLE MENTION

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

At a risk of stating the obvious, this book is about a circus. There is not much more I can say without giving away the magical and enchanting plot, other than strongly urge you to pick up this book and read it. A gripping page turner from the start, I devoured this book from start to finish and am already keen to re-read it, which doesn't happen too often I can tell you. If you're into chick-lit this book probably isn't for you {although there is a little love story}, but if you're after something different you can get your teeth into, this could be it.

Alpha H Liquid Gold with Glycolic Acid

"Expensive", was my first thought about the now infamous Alpha H Liquid Gold when I first looked into trying it. However, when a product is so highly endorsed by the likes of those I trust {and whose skin I covet}, eventually, the lure will prove too much and I cave. Plain and simple packaging, for a seemingly plain and simple liquid, this is a brand and product that don't need to shout from the rooftops about being great, because as soon as you use it, you'll know. Liquid Gold is like magic, you sweep it over your face on a cotton wool pad, experience a light tingling sensation, go to sleep and wake up with noticeably plumped and improved skin. Don't get me wrong, my skin is FAR from perfect, but my previous acne scarring is faded significantly, existing blemishes are healing quicker and I *think* appearing less often {aside from when Mother Nature's monthly gift calls upon me}. I wholeheartedly believe this product is a worthwhile investment.

Avéne Micellar Lotion

Although I use the REN No1 Purity Cleansing Balm {see below} to remove the bulk of my make up, I found it really stung my eyes, making the removal of mascara and the like rather unpleasant. In a concerted effort to ditch make up wipes from my skincare routine, I opted for a gentle micellar solution to partially remove my make up - and more specifically my eye make up - before doing a deeper cleanse with my balm cleanser. I've really enjoyed using Avéne products recently, they are gentle yet effective and good value for money.

REN Active 7 Radiant Eye Gel

I'll be honest, I've never really found an eye cream/gel that actually works wonders, although as eye gels go this is nice, and feels cooling upon initial application to the under eye area of a morning. I wouldn't say it makes my eyes any more radiant, or any less puffy, however, it is refreshing and does trick me into feeling as though I'm doing something proactive about the serious eye baggage situation {being an insomniac doesn't help, trust me}.

Caudalíe Beauty Elixir

It was always inevitable that I would give into the hype surrounding the Caudalíe Beauty Elixir, and although it's early days yet {I've been using it for approx. 3 weeks}, and although I'm slightly terrified at how quickly my {30ml} bottle is disappearing, it's safe to say I like it. A lot. Although I'm not a huge fan of herbal smelling products, I can't say I find the scent overly offensive or off-putting, and have been religiously spritzing this on my face twice a day since purchasing it in Sephora at the start of the month.

Avéne Light Hydrating Cream SPF20

Despite having the oiliest skin of anyone I've ever known {fact}, my skin is also dehydrated, and as I've come to realise, those two factors can result in a somewhat vicious circle. As the name of this Avéne moisturiser might suggest, it is a light cream that still offers plenty of hydration and even sun protection. I have found this to be an excellent base for make up, it holds up a fairly decent attack against oil, and makes my skin feel softer and more supple. I'm not sure it's 'the one', but it's proving to be a worthwhile test.

Hydraluron

In case you've missed out on the buzz surrounding Hydraluron, it's essentially an unassuming serum that packs one hell of a punch, in skin hydrating terms at least. Designed for seriously dehydrated skins, this serum is intended to be used in addition to your existing skincare products, as an enhancement. I use it after my Caudalíe Beauty Elixir and before my moisturiser {day and night, unless I'm using my Alpha H Liquid Gold}, and most definitely notice that my moisturiser is absorbed more efficiently and effectively. I have been using this for just shy of two months, and although the effects are noticeable, I expect them to be longer term with continued use. Again, this product is pretty expensive - you get what you pay for, and if you want something good, you might have to part with a little more cash to get it. Fortunately, a little goes a very long way.

REN No1 Purity Cleansing Balm

Using a cleansing balm to remove my make up has been an entirely new experience. I'd previously dabbled in the world of cream cleansers, gel cleansers, oil cleansers, liquid cleansers and even the dreaded make up wipes *shock horror*, but never balm cleansers. Recommended by a very wonderful friend of mine, I purchased the REN No1 Purity Cleansing Balm and although I admit it took me a while to get used to a slightly different method of make up removal, I loved how my skin felt so clean and calm after use. I find this a strangely comforting product to use, and the whole process of a night time skincare routine helps me 'wind down'.

REN Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask*

I had tried a {tiny} sample of this mask as a GWP, and greedily finished it off within two uses. The consistency is unlike anything I'd ever used before, and feels a little like smoothing a sticky fruity smelling syrup onto your face, however, the effects are worth it. As the name might hint, this mask has radiance in mind, and with the potency of it's ingredients it certainly helps my skin to look and feel less congested, brighter and healthier. Not my favourite mask by any means, but certainly worth a try and my current 'go to'. A brief word of warning - use this with caution, it HURTS if you get it in your eyes, so learn from my mistakes and don't apply it before getting into a steaming hot bath!

August Favourites {2012}

Yet another month has quickly sailed past, and once again I gather up my monthly favourites into a bag and arrange a still life on the coffee table - after removing the toy cars and plastic dinosaurs first, of course.

Sadly, I've no time for all of the usual pomp and ceremony, so without further ado, here are my August favourites...

SKINCARE

Hydraluron - Indeed Labs

This purchase was entirely the fault of Caroline Hirons - although in this case, blame isn't necessarily a negative thing! She blogged about it. She said we needed it. I bought it. As per usual, I will be doing a more in depth review of this as soon as I can, but so far, so good. Definitely a worthy investment.

Mandara Spa Island Paradise Intensive Body Scrub*

You all know by now that I'm an exfoliating addict - I know, I know, I sound like a broken record. This offering from Mandara Spa is a delightfully scrubby scrub, my favourite kind in fact, and has a gorgeous fresh and zesty fruit scent to it, making it particularly well suited to those mornings when you're feeling a little s l o w {that's every morning then}.

MAKE UP

Liz Earle Lash Definition Smudgeproof Mascara in Black*

As soon as I opened this mascara, I have to admit my hopes were not high. The brush is nothing special, the formulation looked dry and clumpy, and the packaging somewhat cheap and uninviting. However, first impressions aside, I am actually enjoying using this mascara - it takes a little work to ensure there are no obvious clumps {unless that's the look you're going for}, and the formula is a lot drier than I tend to prefer, but this holds an impressive curl all day long without smudging or flaking, something that I was definitely not expecting.

Korres Lip Butter in Jasmine

Finding out that my local Waitrose stocks Korres products was a potentially expensive discovery. Whilst buying a salad and some fruit for lunch one day, one of the infamous Korres Lip Butters just 'fell' into my basket. The Jasmine scent is incredibly delicious, and I'm in love with the gorgeous pale pink sheen this leaves on my lips. It's nourishing as well as being pretty, and although I'm not a huge fan of the packaging, I really love this product. I'm very tempted to try other 'flavours' now, but will wait until I've use this up first... probably!

Essie Nail Lacquer in Turquoise & Caicos and In Stitches

I'm slowly acquiring a new love for Essie polishes, and after blogging about and obsessively wearing the gorgeous Turquoise & Caicos last week, I promptly applied a shade passed on to me by Lydia, called In Stitches. I'd describe it as a dark dusky pink, and it applied nicely in 2 coats. The diffusion line with the bigger brush and improved formulation is definitely preferable to the older versions though.

Carmex Moisture Plus Ultra Hydrating Lip Balm Sheer Pink Tint SPF12

I picked this up when my tub of Carmex ran out a couple of months ago, and promptly lost it in the depths of my handbag. I recently rediscovered it with glee, and have been enjoying using it ever since. It's essentially just Carmex, in stick form, with a tint - in this case a bright bubblegum pink - that leaves a non-sticky, moisturising sheer colour on the lips. The colour lasts longer than the 'shine', and I find this to be fairly good at keeping my lips well hydrated for at least a couple of hours after initial application.

Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Anti-Chip Top Coat

I've wanted a decent top coat for years now, and simply never got around to investing in one - despite the significant amount of times per week that I re-paint my nails. Upon Lydia's trustworthy recommendation, I purchased the Sally Hansen Insta-Dri top coat - a quick drying polish that also increases the longevity for the majority of my nail polishes worn underneath. I won't be without this now.

BEAUTY TOOLS

Real Techniques by Samantha Chapman - Buffing Brush and Contour Brush

If you love beauty, you'll probably have heard of the Pixiwoo sisters, Sam and Nic. Their YouTube videos are incredible, and having met both of them previously I can confirm they are just as nice off screen as they appear on screen - something that clearly transmits well to their huge amount of 'followers'. Their down to earth, fun but professional approach to make up and its artistry has earned them much deserved success, and Sam recently launched her own collection of make up brushes - Real Techniques. My local Boots store stocks them, and I'd had my eye on the Buffing Brush for ages - it looked like the ideal brush for applying a light coverage, well blended foundation - and it is! Available as part of the 'Core Collection' set, it also comes with 3 other brushes, including the Contour Brush, which I have thoroughly enjoyed using for a more precise application of blusher. I can't say enough good things about these brushes, and I will definitely be saving up for some more!

Tangle Teezer - Original Black

Another product passed on to me by Lydia was the Tangle Teezer, a hair brush I have wanted to try for years. I'm sure she won't mind my saying that Lydia has thick hair, and found that this simply didn't brush through her tangles adequately. In comparison, I have fairly thin hair, just a lot of it, and have found that this de-tangles my hair gently and effectively, and seems to be much kinder to my hair than my other brushes. I've really enjoyed using this, and it's now a firm favourite - different strokes for different folks, aye {please excuse the pun, I couldn't help it}.

HONOURABLE MENTION

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

I know no one likes being told what to do, however... Buy this book. Stop what you're doing, right now, and buy this book. It's such an incredibly well written, emotive and powerful read and I utterly love it. I first heard about this book in a Gemsmaquillage video, and finally bought it online earlier this month from Amazon {with a handy gift voucher}. John Green possesses an enviable talent for writing, and despite being a male author, this book is narrated from the perspective of a female teenage cancer sufferer. It is not 'just' a book about cancer, or 'just' a teenage romance novel, or even 'just' another best selling book. It is so much more - I urge you to read it and fall in love with it yourself.

This past weekend saw me visiting the sunny shores of Portsmouth, and one of my dearest friends Lydia. Readers of Lydia's blog will know that without any shadow of a doubt, she is a nail polish addict. When faced with Lydia's impressively sized collection of an array of beautiful nail polishes, I'm afraid to say I got a little overwhelmed and didn't know where to start. I am, at best, habitually indecisive, and when faced with so much choice, it took me longer than it should have to narrow down my selection.

In the end, I opted for two shades that complimented each other rather well thanks to their purple tones. The lighter of the two shades, a dusky mauve/pink, is Angora Cardi by Essie - a shade I simply must have. It is such a unique colour, at least I'd never seen anything quite like it before, and in my opinion is a professional, wearable and 'for all seasons' shade. The darker colour is Carry On, also by Essie, and although not unlike polishes I already own, I was drawn to it's sophisticated deep purple hue. I used three coats of each shade, to reach total opacity, although a lighter application would most likely have only necessitated two. I finished with a coat of Sally Hansen's InstaDry {more on that beauty to follow!}, for glossy nails that were chip free for at least two days - pretty good going for me.

I'm quite taken with Essie nail polishes, despite their inconsistent and sometimes dubious reviews. I'd like to extend a big thank you to Lydia for letting me loose in her collection, and for a lovely weekend ♥

For anyone lusting over the {sadly} discontinued Chanel Nouvelle Vague polish that I featured last week, fear not - dupes do exist. There is no such thing as an exact dupe, however, something that comes close, for a fraction of the price, is never a bad thing.

This gorgeous turquoise polish from Essie, named Turks & Caicos, is a pretty similar dupe - although the blue and green tones are slightly more intense, and there is not even a hint of sparkle. This polish has a gorgeous creamy consistency and finish, and although it took 3 coats to reach full opacity, the longevity is seriously impressive, and I just can't stop looking at my nails, glinting in the sunshine like the beautiful clear ocean waters the shade is named after.

The infamous Essie Mint Candy Apple, although similar to both Nouvelle Vague and Turks & Caicos, is paler and less intense, and upon comparison is my least favourite of the three. As you can see if you look at my previous NOTD's for these shades, all three colours are a variation along the same theme, with subtle nuances, all equally beautiful in their own right.

Essie polishes can now be found in selected Boots and Superdrug stores, for £7.99, making them more accessible and also slightly dangerous for the polish fiends among us!

Awkward 'I don't know how to pose' face!

As a busy working Mum now, managing a fully made up face of a morning is nothing short of a miracle. I'll either be headed to the office or a playdate/playgroup, and as a notoriously terrible timekeeper, I'll nearly always be pushed for time and rushing to get myself ready before Jamie destroys the house.

Any product that helps me to feel made up and polished, with minimal effort required, is always going to excite me, so when I discovered the Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains on the Revlon stand in my local Boots last month, I popped a couple straight into my basket.

As the name of these would suggest, they are essentially a lip stain in the form of a balm - picture a chunky Crayola crayon and you won't be far off. I have a couple of shades, but my ultimate 'go-to' is Honey {featured in my July favourites post}. It's a lilacy pink shade, that is incredibly wearable and can either be applied in a thin, sheer layer, or more heavily for intense pigmentation. I can take or leave the slightly odd minty flavour and scent, which is unnoticeable after a few moments wear. To me, the consistency of these is drier than a balm upon application, but they do hydrate my lips and definitely don't leave them feeling dry or flaky. These really do last too, and are the first stain I've tried that fade nicely without leaving patches or transferring. I easily have visible colour still on my lips, even after eating and drinking, up to 4 hours after initial application, albeit slightly less pigmented.

Aside from the fact that these are not so subtle copies of the Clinique Chubby Sticks, a more expensive counterpart, I highly recommend that you check these out if you've not already. There are 6 shades available in the UK I believe, and you can buy them from anywhere with a Revlon stand for £5.99+ - well worth that price.

NOTD: Chanel Nouvelle Vague

Although I've often lusted over the decadently delicious and tantalising nail polish {and make up} at Chanel counters, I'd never actually tried one until last weekend - when Lydia allowed me to introduce my nails to the divine beauty that is Chanel Nouvelle Vague. This polish was released with Chanel's Summer Collection in 2010*.

This colour is so stunning, and in direct sunlight, the tiniest and most delicate of shimmers can be detected, sparkling away smugly in all their Chanel glory. This is more than just a 'turquoise' nail polish, and not just because of the designer name I hasten to add. It's a really stunning shade, with more depth than first meets the eye. I would describe this a creamy pale, blue toned turquoise, with a subtle silver pearl shimmer.

As an avid champion of the accent nail {it allows me to indulge my incurable indecisive nature}, I chose to pair this with a glitter polish from CND - another brand I had heard many good things about, but had yet to try. The blue toned sparkle is more subtle than most of the rather more obnoxious glitters I own, and lent itself perfectly to this more sophisticated summer manicure.

I'm desperate to get my mitts {excuse the pun} on some Chanel nail polishes now - although I've heard mixed reviews with regard to their longevity, and have obvious reservations based on their high end price - I was suitably impressed and can't help but want more.

*I've just looked on eBay to see if this polish was available to purchase, and people are selling it for silly money - I'm talking £80+. What the...?!

Spotlight On: L'Occitane Candle for Sight

Empties {July 2012}

I can't help but notice how many bloggers are currently featuring posts or videos dedicated entirely to their empties. Whilst, to those 'non' beauty obsessives out there {Colin, I'm talking about you here!}, writing about your empty products might seem slightly borderline crazy territory, however, to me it seems completely and utterly normal.

Empty posts are, to state the obvious, indicative of what you have actually used. Be those products you've begrudgingly used for months and months until they finally give up the ghost, or products where you've frantically scraped the remnants out of the packaging. Either way, you've used them up, and no doubt have something to say about them. Where possible, I'll link to previous mentions or reviews, but will keep my comments short and sweet for this post.

I've been collecting these empties for approx. 2 months, but I'll call this my July empties. I, like many other bloggers, am on a drive to shop my stash and use up the products I already have before purchasing new ones - this is all well and good in theory of course, but we all know how much of an impossibility that is in reality. I digress...

July Empties

John Frieda Sheer Blonde Colour Renew Tone Correcting Conditioner

Regular readers will know I'm a big fan of John Frieda, the products always work well and my hair responds well to them. The Colour Renew range is designed for colour treated blonde locks, to help prolong the colour intensity and keep the brassy tones at bay. This works but I've used better conditioners.

John Frieda Sheer Blonde Go Blonder Lightening Shampoo

The John Frieda Go Blonder range works really well at brightening and maintaining my *ahem* bottle blonde hair, and leaves it feeling clean and healthy. I'll always go back to this range when I'm feeling in need of a trusty shampoo and conditioner.

Sanctuary Spa Body Wash

My Mum had passed on some travel sized Sanctuary products to me, and the original scent is instantly nostalgic of my two visits to the spa in Covent Garden itself. I take these travel sized versions when I go camping, because camping doesn't have to mean dirty and smelly you know!

Tisserand De-Stress Bath Oil*

Whilst I'm unsure as to how de-stressing this bath oil is itself, the lavender, marjoram and mandarin scent is soothing and relaxing, making it perfect to use for a slumber inducing evening soak in the tub. I will probably stick to using drops of my lavender essential oil rather than repurchase this, but it does create a nice, unexpected lather.

Pro:Voke Touch of Silver Twice a Week Brightening Shampoo with Violet Pigment

Lydia included this in my beauty box Christmas present last year, and although it isn't a patch on my beloved Clynol purple shampoo, it does work to retain the brightness of colour treated blonde. I will review this soon.

Yes to Baby Carrots Shampoo & Body Wash*

Jamie reviewed this all by himself last year, and despite multiple hair washes a week {he's a typical boy, always grubby by the end of the day} this shampoo has lasted for ages - we're seriously impressed and will definitely repurchase this.

Jan Marini Bioglycolic Facial Cleanser

This had been lurking in a dusty corner of my beauty shelf for more time than I care to mention, and I didn't expect much from it to be quite honest. However, I really adored the positive effects this had on my skin, and if it is still available on the world wide web, I'd definitely consider repurchasing.

Tisserand De-Stress Bath & Shower Oil*

This product is almost identical to the aforementioned Tisserand Bath Oil, so all I will add is this: use in the shower with extreme caution. Oil + water = slippery shower surface.

Sanctuary Spa Body Lotion

The moisturising counterpart to the aforementioned body wash, I really like using Sanctuary body products, the scent if nothing else makes me feel sophisticated and luxurious.

Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief Whitening Toothpaste

I know, I know...it's a toothpaste, BUT hear me out here, because this actually does work. It does make my teeth less sensitive, and I'm pretty sure it does also make my teeth a little whiter. It's darned expensive if you ask me, but when something works and makes eating ice cream easier, I'll pay that price quite happily.

Original Chap Stick

Who doesn't love Chap Stick. I do.

Bio Oil

I used Bio Oil throughout my pregnancy, and have used it sporadically ever since {2 years - my baby boy is TWO next week!}. It's pretty hard to fault this product, it's gentle on the skin but does exactly what it says on the ~~tin~~ bottle. The next one is waiting and ready to go!

Maybelline One-by-One Volum' Express Mascara

I have mixed opinions on this mascara - I rated it 3/5 in my review last autumn, but had another one to use up, and although I do like it, I definitely don't love it, and wouldn't repurchase this.

No7 Beautiful Skin Quick Thinking Wipes

Before you all pelt me with rotten vegetables and burning newspapers, let me defend my use of the face wipes. I am, by my own admission, very lazy. I've lamented over my evening make up removal irritations before, and now I only use wipes very, very occasionally - in extreme illness, at 'sleepovers' or when camping.

Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara

Holy Grail Mascara. Will repurchase for eternity - or at least until they stop making it. Which they can never do. The end.

The Body Shop Super Volume Mascara*

This mascara really is pants. I don't know if it's empty, but it's dried up and flaky, and irritates me a lot more than is rationally accepted. I will most definitely not be repurchasing this.

Calvin Klein Euphoria Eau de Parfum

Another one of my perfumes that has crashed and burned. It was delicious while it lasted, but it's time for me to move onto pastures new now Mr Klein. I'll see you again someday.

What Do I Think?

For the last 2-3 months, every time I have used these products I have mentally tried to compose something constructive to say about them. It's not that I dislike them, or even have a particular problem with them, I just don't love them. I'm not overly impressed or dissatisfied, although admittedly hair products are not things I tend to get excited about in general. I am a big fan of Clynol products, my favourite shampoo {that I have just repurchased, and sold my Mum on too!} is their Colour & Care Reflex Silver Shampoo, however, this range just doesn't wow me in the way I anticipated it too. The 'repair' concept is right up my street, all of the products contain keratin, an ingredient renowned for it's restorative purposes for dry and damaged hair. Out of the four products, my favourite is probably the Recovery Repair Conditioner, it smells amazing and although it doesn't feel very substantial when you apply it, it leaves my ends tangle free, soft and healthy. In conjunction with the conditioner, is the Revive Repair Shampoo, and although this lathers nicely and leaves my hair feeling clean, it doesn't add any extra shine or bounce, and my hair feels no healthier from this than any other bog standard shampoo. The Remedy Leave-In Instant Keratin Filler is a treatment to be sprayed onto damp hair, concentrated specifically on the most damaged areas {the ends, for me}, then styled as usual. I can't stay I detected any noticeable difference, aside from leaving a nice scent, although it did help to detangle my hair when styling. The Caress Sealed Ends product is again something that I expected to really like, and perhaps I'm making unfair comparisons between this and my hair oils, but it just doesn't perform well enough, or noticeably enough, to warrant a rave review. I will use these products up, there is no reason for mindless waste, I just won't be 100% satisfied. I would just like to mention the packaging of Clynol products, as an aside. Good packaging never goes unnoticed with me, and I'm a fan of the clean, simple design, the products dispense just the right amount really easily, with no unnecessary mess.

No. I like the Repair range, and I like Clynol, however, I need to LOVE hair products in order to re-purchase them, and especially as the prices are more mid-high end, I wouldn't want to buy these again.

July Favourites {2012}

July is my favourite month, closely tied with December. No least because it brings my birthday {although the older I get, the less appealing this becomes}, but also, if Mother Nature is on our side, a hint of sunshine and blissful summer evenings spent sipping Pimms in the garden and eating BBQ'd food. I don't think you need me to tell you what December brings...

I have been unintentionally AWOL from this space of t'internet for a little over a month, and whilst I won't go into the {personal} circumstances that necessitated this, I can assure you it was only temporary. Regrettably, I missed posting my June favourites, so this post amalgamates two months worth of products that I've been enjoying. I'll try to keep it short and sweet, for I've a feeling this could be a long one.

I've a list of things to blog about as long as my arm, and the piles of products that are sat about waiting to be photographed are starting to accumulate a thin layer of dust, so hopefully I can begin posting more regularly again. Although, this is the second time I've had to write this entire post, so let's keep our fingers crossed that Blogger plays ball... On with the show!

MAKE UP

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Honey

It's pretty impossible to miss the latest offerings from Revlon in the beauty community at the moment, and aside from the fact they are unapologetic and blatant copies of the Clinique Chubby Sticks {but much more reasonably priced}, it's not hard to see why. They really are what they say they are: an effective lip stain with a balm-like consistency, that provides great pigmentation and longevity whilst still hydrating the lips. I will be reviewing these in more detail soon, but my favourite thus far is the one on the right in the above photograph, Honey, a gorgeous lilac/pink.

Nails Inc in OMP! by Fabulous

I try not to include old limited edition products in my monthly favourites, I know first hand how frustrating is to fall in lust with something that is near impossible to get your mitts on. However, I've been wearing this shade on my fingers and toes almost exclusively throughout much of June and July, and it would be criminal not to include it within this post. It's a gorgeous hot pinky coral, perfect for toes and great with a light tan in the summer months.

SKINCARE

REN No1. Purity Cleansing Balm

I've had a skincare shake-up of late. In fact, that's putting it fairly mildly. I've completely replaced every single product I was using, and have started again from scratch. I sought advice from skincare expert Caroline Hirons, aka Beauty Mouth - if you've never visited her blog, then I suggest you stop reading this and get your butt over there right now {as long as you come back here of course!} - who suggested I invest in a balm cleanser and the infamous Alpha H Liquid Gold to begin with. My skin is oily/combination, with congestion on my chin/jawline in particular, but it is also seriously dehydrated. My previous skincare routine just was not cutting it. I opted for this Cleansing Balm from REN, that came highly recommended. A full review is to follow, so for now let me say just one word about it: revolutionary.

Caudalie Vinosource Moisturising Matifying Fluid

Caudalie is a brand that has been on my radar a lot recently, and I managed to acquire this moisturiser as a GWP {gift with purchase} when I subscribed to a magazine. I was after something lightweight and oil controlling, and this fits the bill perfectly. It manages to keep my oily skin under control for longer, whilst providing much needed hydration - a common misconception with oily skin is that it doesn't need moisturiser: it does. A more in depth review will follow in due course.

REN Frankincense Revitalising Night Cream

Night cream is something I have been incredibly slack with in my previous skincare routines. Let's just say, I'm incredibly lazy, and once thoughts of bed have entered my head of an evening, it's a darn miracle that I manage to remove my make up and cleanse before passing out, let alone apply moisturiser. However, this sample has made me realise just how beneficial not omitting this step from my evening routine can be - my skins texture has honestly improved after just a couple of weeks regular use. I sense a full size purchase on the horizon.

REN T-Zone Balancing Day Fluid

I've been flitting between the aforementioned Caudalie moisturiser and this offering from REN for the last 2-3 weeks. They are pretty similar, this too is lightweight and controls oil effectively, whilst providing decent hydration to my parched skin. I'm really impressed with all of the REN products that I have been trying - and with the service from their website for that matter - I purchased the Cleansing Balm and was able to chose 5 sample sized products to try. Good for testing, bad for the purse!

The Body Shop Almond Body Butter

As part of my great skincare shake-up, I've been ditching the majority of my body products that contain mineral oils. Essentially, mineral oils prevent the total absorption of the products into the skin, making both the product and process of applying it essentially worthless. The area of my body that not using mineral oils has had the most effect on are my legs. Gone are the dry, scaly pins, that were impossible to keep smooth, and in their place is soft, healthy looking skin - all from cutting out mineral oils. I love The Body Shop Body Butters, although they do take a long time to sink in so are definitely best applied before bed - if you can keep your eyes open long enough. This Almond scent literally smells good enough to eat - but I wouldn't recommend that!

HAIRCARE

Organic Care System Power Build Shampoo & Conditioner*

I am going to be reviewing this duo very shortly, so I'm not going to say too much. However, let it be known that these products really are nothing short of amazing, I've definitely fallen in love, and am dreading these tiny little sample sizes running out - it's imminent. I am definitely trying to make more savvy choices when it comes to products at the moment, and trying to cut out unnecessary ingredients - these tick that box nicely.

Fructis Style Sleek & Shine Anti-Humidity Smoothing Milk

It is very unlike me to get overly enthusiastic about hair styling products, in fact up until my recent discovery of oils, I never used anything aside from shampoo and conditioner. I was introduced to this product by my hairdresser, a lovely friend who comes to my house and transforms my hair from drab to fab. Unfortunately, this product is really difficult to get hold of in the UK, however, luckily for her - and me - she acquires ample supplies from a friend travelling across the pond {aka, to the States}. Despite the fact that using a Fructis product feels like a throwback to the 90's, this really does do what it says - it smooths the hair, controls frizz without adding any detectable product or excess weight to the hair, and it makes subsequent styling a dream. Plus, it smells divine

PERFUME

Burberry Body Eau de Parfum*

Fragrance is something I have a love/hate relationship with. I love the pretty bottles adoring my dressing table, and I love to smell amazing, however, I really hate the price and hate how quickly I seem to go through the fragrance. However, I do have a few in my collection at the moment that I am really enjoying, predominantly this offering from Burberry. I will be positing about this in more detail very soon - and will describe the scent properly then too - keeping you on tenterhooks!
