Ford designed ‘Scorpion’ diesel engine to replace the Navistar Power Stroke for 2011

How important? Diesels make up almost 80% of Super Duty sales. And the move is expected to permanently end Ford’s longtime use of Navistar built diesel engines in its heavy duty pickups, due to an ongoing legal battle between the two companies over warranty and cost issues related to the old 6.0-liter V8 Power Stroke model years 2003 to 2007.

Ford has used Navistar diesels in its F-Series trucks since 1982. Ford has a new engine under it’s 2011 hood, with a new grill to accommodate its all new engine.

The all new Ford designed ‘Scorpion’ 6.7-liter V8 diesel engine that will replace the current Navistar supplied 6.4-liter V8 Power Stroke by 2011. The Scorpion will also use lighter aluminum cylinder heads, abandoning the cast-iron heads in the current 6.4 liter Power Stroke. Power targets are said to be about. 390hp & 720lb-ft of torque. Today’s Power Stroke V8 is rated at a more ’sedate’ 350hp 350lb-ft of torque. Scorpion fuel economy is expected to be increased by at least 3 miles per gallon (mpg) versus the current engine. Helping the Scorpions mileage will be a new 6-speed automatic, like the 2009 F-150 has.

After releasing some exciting technical info on an all-new Power Stroke engine for the 2011 F-Series Super Duty with sales starting in the Spring of 2010.

Under the hood of the new F-Series Super Duty will be a revolutionary new 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbo-diesel engine. The all-new engine promises a “significant improvement in torque, horsepower and fuel economy,” this new F-Series Super Duty would continue to be a class leader in both payload and towing. It will also be significantly quieter than past diesels.

Numerous high-tech innovations have been employed in building this new engine, starting with a compacted graphite iron (CGI) engine block that Ford says is twice as strong as standard iron blocks. This was deemed necessary due to the increases in power output. (This may evenn make it to other vehicles like the GT 500)

The new engine makes use of a Honeywell single variable turbine turbo (this is similar to the one found on the Porsche 911 Turbo), but takes turbo technology a step further still. Instead of one, there are two compressor wheels driven off a single turbine impeller, working like a bi-turbo setup that gives the engine a fast response time with little lag as well as the power of a larger turbo.

Visually, the new engine looks remarkably different, due to the fact that the intake and exhaust systems are the reverse of a conventional engine. The exhaust manifolds sit in the valley of the big V8 engine, while the intake manifold is on the outside. This means the cylinder heads are essentially flipped around.

By significantly reducing the amount of exhaust piping, lag is reduced considerably. Additionally, this new packaging moves the hotter elements of the engine like the turbocharger and exhaust pipes away from the intake areas, ensuring a constant supply of cool air to the engine. And as for that turbo, it sits in the valley between the cylinder banks. Due to its location, spool up is considerably faster and the engine’s overall balance is improved. Another major benefit of this setup is that that cab no longer has to be removed from the frame if work needs to be done on the turbo. Making the maitenence easier, the fuel-pump, EGR also know as exhaust gas recirculation and the thermostats are also easily accessible from the front of the vehicle.

Dan's first drive in a Hybrid Ford Fusion

Today I had the chance to take the first test drive around our Ford dealership in a Hybrid Fusion.

Wow what a great car. Quiet and smooth ride, felt like it has more power than 175 Horse power (13 more than Ford's last Hybrid Engine) and I was able to cruise at 43 mpg on the 275 volt (Ni-MH0) battery. Ford boast it can do 47 on Electric and with time I'm sure this is a reality. We have been offered just a few and I would guess these will be sold out soon. Check with your tax accountant as you will get great tax benefits with the purchase of this vehicle.

2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid EPA rating 41/36, best in class

Fusion highlights;

The vehicle, rated at 41 m.p.g. city and 36 m.p.g. highway, goes on sale NOW, Hurry they will be sold out soon. Point of interest a four-cylinder gasoline-powered version that, in its own right, delivers 23 city and 34 highway.

The Fusion's regenerative braking system, which recovers up to 94 percent of braking energy (the electric motor does the bulk of the braking, turning into a generator and using the recovered power to recharge the battery pack). Thus brake pads are expected to last three to five times longer.

Ford stacked the battery pack behind the rear seat. That still allows for a large trunk. The "battery" actually is 208 individual cells the size of a household 'D' cell.

The Fusion can reach 47 mph on electric power alone – provided you have the right touch on the throttle.

You don't feel the gasoline engine kick in or cut out because of the powertrain control module is calibrated to ease the transition.

Oil change intervals are expected to be at 10,000 miles because the engine does only half the work in this hybrid configuration.

The Fusion Hybrid is a complete car, with some advantages over the competition. Like the Prius and Camry, its hybrid system has an electric motor boosted by a gasoline engine in this case, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder. With both motors working together, the output is 191 horsepower, driving the front wheels through a continuously variable automatic transmission.

Aside from the power train, the new Fusion Hybrid is virtually the same as a Fusion SEL, which is to say it's been substantially upgraded from the original model. The exterior styling has been freshened to improve aerodynamics and give the Fusion a wider look.

Most noticeable are the interior styling changes, with redesigned seats and extensive use of upscale soft-touch materials, which together fashion a substantial, near-luxury ambiance. The front seats are big, deep and supportive and the outboard back seats also offer decent comfort, though not an excess of knee or head room. The center-rear position is impossibly cramped.

On the road, the Fusion Hybrid is serenely quiet and the drive train is so sophisticated that it's difficult to discern when the gasoline engine kicks in and out. Handling is secure and the ride is comfortable.

The video from the debut of the Shelby GT500 Super Snake Prudhomme Edition includes not only the wicked dragster-inspired 'Stang, but also a touch of Shelby's "wit" on display.

2010 Aston Martin One-77 - Auto Shows

We have reported endlessly, it seems, on the stunningly fast, stunningly expensive, and stunningly styled Aston Martin One-77 in advance of the car’s official unveiling, which has just taken place at the 2009 Geneva auto show. Now that the supercar is out of the bag, we have more details on the most ambitious automobile in the company’s history.

The One-77’s architecture was guided, Aston says, by the principles of front-engine/rear-drive touring-car racers, incorporating a carbon-fiber monocoque and a double-wishbone suspension that features inboard, pushrod-actuated dynamic shocks. And, as with race cars themselves, final suspension tuning that will be set once the vehicle is actually delivered to the owner for the ultimate in customization. Ford Bucks Detroit Trend With 3 New Car Models

The number of new models that will make a debut in 2009 will probably total fewer than 10, according to product plans revealed by the car companies.
“The environment is obviously not good as far as the economy and consumer confidence goes,” said Joseph Phillippi, principal in the firm Auto Trends Consulting.
Ford, however, is bringing out three new vehicles this year — the Fusion, with either a hybrid or conventional engine; the new Taurus sedan and the Transit Connect van.
Ford will introduce the Fusion Hybrid with an advertising campaign beginning Tuesday night on “American Idol.”

Maxximus G-Force: First (and Last) Glimpse of a 1600-hp Beast - Car News

A gearhead fairy tale: a wistful mechanic and a wealthy benefactor create a 1600-hp Ultima-based road demon.
BY STEVE SILERThe invitation was brief, but intriguing. “Philanthropist and businessman David McMahan unveils the world’s newest, fastest, street legal supercar, officially certified by the World Records Academy. Please join us for breakfast and viewing this remarkable, beautifully crafted, one-of-a kind car, harnessing over 1600 horsepower.” Three eye-popping numbers that suggested that, if not the fastest, the G-Force might be one of the quickest cars in the world: 0–60 in 2.134 seconds; 0–100 in 4.541 seconds; 0–100–0 in 8.861 seconds.
We’re not sure if there is a real good way to harness 1600 hp, but if any car is going to be able to snatch “world’s fastest” status from the current titleholder, it’s going to need all the horsepower it can get. The record is currently held by, depending on who you ask, either the 1001-hp, 253-mph Bugatti Veyron 16.4 or the 1183-hp SSC Ultimate Aero (built by Shelby Supercars), the latter of which the Guinness Book of Records certified as the world’s fastest production car when it hit 256 mph in 2007. The 2009 Ultimate Aero now makes 1287 hp, for what it’s worth.
We arrived at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, stood around the car’s satin-draped form, and waited, ready with questions. What is Maxximus? Where is it based? What exactly is under the hood of the G-Force? How much will it cost? How many will be built? And of course, when do we get to drive it? Within minutes, the regal Dr. McMahan wafted in, accompanied by Marion Kirby, the builder of the G-Force, to give us the answers.
The Ultimate Ultima
How does one build a car that beats the fastest cars in the world? Well, for an outfit as “mini” as Maxximus, starting with a solid basis was key. Kirby chose as his starting point Great Britain’s featherweight, mid-engine Ultima GTR720, which has been available as a kit or turnkey car in more or less the same form for a quarter of a century. The Ultima GTR is hardly new, but it’s always been quick. Our most recent GTR test happened way back in April 2000. An expensive car at $152,150 as tested, that example’s 345-hp Corvette-sourced LS1 V-8 powered the 2314-pound skateboard to a 3.3-second 0–60 time and an 8.2-second 0–100 time. It also pulled 0.98 g on the skidpad. Those are all impressive figures, even today. The later GTR720 uses a 720-hp small-block Chevrolet engine to generate acceleration figures that are among the best of all “production” street cars in history: 0–60 in 2.6 seconds, 100 mph in 5.3 seconds, and 0–100–0 in 9.4 seconds, according to Ultima.

World's cheapest car set for production. Emphasis on "cheap"

Here's a good way to build a cheap car: take out the airbags, power steering, rear seat belts, anti-lock brakes, and most cylinders, all frills, and other standard safety equipment. Do that and you'll end up with a four-door, four-seater, 33-hp 2-cylinder car that you can sell to a hungry market with decidedly low expectations for about 100,000 rupees ($1,988). Which still seems kind of expensive when you consider that you can buy a new Kia Rio for $10,000.
Often called the Model T of the 21st century, the Tata Nano is expected to go into production for the growing Indian automotive market on March 23, with orders being accepted in April.
According to the company's website, "The Nano's safety performance exceeds current regulatory requirements." That may be true for India, but lack of seatbelts in the rear is enough to bar it from the U.S. market.
The EU may have more strict emissions standards that the U.S., but apparently tragically weaker safety standards, and the vehicle is expected to retail in Europe for 5,000 euros ($6,347) next year.
While Tata says it conforms with Euro IV emission standards, it doesn't say much in terms of crash tests. While we don't know what a Nano vs. Land Rover side impact test will look like, its diminutive size and weight (1300 lbs) means it it probably conforms nicely to European pedestrian safety laws,

An eye on Detroit: NAIAS '09 - Day 1

Keeping an eye on the competition in Cobo today... guess which manufacturer's car this is from? Judging by the response of some auto makers, you'd have thought this year's Detroit autoshow wouldn't be worth the effort. However, judging by twitter chatter, mainstream news coverage and the response of people on the ground, hell hasn't actually frozen over (its only Detroit's pavements) and those that ventured to the Cobo Hall today for the start of the North American International Auto Show 2009, were rewarded with some treats and surprises. This show was always going to be about certain North American manufacturers proving to a skeptical American public they deserved bailout money, and for every other manufacturer, a chance to prove the auto industry wasn't actually on its knees, and could still deliver the vision, and kick-ass products that would make people open their wallets.
