State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge today named 367 Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Schools.

Georgia has much to be proud of when it comes to the success of Advanced Placement," Superintendent Barge said. "Much of this success can be attributed to the dedication to rigor and excellence at each of our AP Honor Schools."

Advanced Placement (AP) classes and exams are administered by the College Board, which also administers the SAT. AP classes offer rigorous college-level learning options to students in high school. Students who receive a 3, 4 or 5 on AP exams may receive college credit.
From Dunwoody High School's Sra. Adams-Fletcher: I'm very happy to let you know that Dunwoody won the popular contest with our video Learn and Discover Languages. Please thank everyone for their support and for helping us to promote language education in the Dunwoody cluster!!

This student video podcast is part of the Discover Languages Campaign which begins in the month of February. Former students have highlighted what they have done with their language study since graduating from Dunwoody. It is important to raise awareness in the Dunwoody community of the importance of early language learning. The Dunwoody cluster is the only cluster without an elementary school program and yet it still maintains a strong high school program. Just imagine if we started younger!! By: Cami Nail, Primrose School of Dunwoody
www.PrimroseDunwoody.com
cnail@primrosedunwoody.com

With the invention of computers, video games and electronic toys children have become increasingly less active. Childhood obesity and the need for more physical activity are increasingly critical issues in America . One way you can encourage your children to become more physically active is by dancing!

The American Heart Association recommends that children ages two and older participate in at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. Dance is a simple activity that doesn’t require complicated equipment and can be done just about anywhere.

“I recommend dance as a fun physical activity for the whole family because it doesn’t require a lot of time, money or resources,” said Dr. Mary Zurn, vice president of education for Primrose Schools. “Dancing is a creative form of self-expression that helps build self-confidence. Plus, it provides time well spent with your family.”

Dr. Zurn and Dr. Steve Sanders, a fitness expert and Director of the School of Physical Education & Exercise Science at the University of South Florida as well as a member of the Primrose Education Advisory Board, recommend these tips to encourage your family to start dancing:

Step 1: Select appropriate music. You aren’t just looking for age-appropriate lyrics. It is also important to find music with an eight-count beat that isn’t too fast or too slow, so children can successfully develop movements in time with the music.

Step 2: Create a dance routine with your child. Together, decide how your dance will begin, what movements will go in the middle and how it will end. Children naturally respond to music with movement, which they can then turn into a dance. They love to pretend and don’t have any difficulty responding if they are asked to “be” the wind moving in the trees or even a dog searching for a place to bury a bone. Their imaginations don’t need much encouragement to get moving.

Step 3: Focus on developing your child’s key motor skills. Freestyle dancing is great for getting the heart rate up, but dancing can also be beneficial to your child’s motor and coordination development. Dancing will enable them to practice fundamental skills like jumping, landing, leaping, sliding, galloping, moving forward and backwards, and learning how to imitate moves.

Step 4: Check your child’s heart rate. Teach your child to connect physical activity with maintaining a healthy heart by measuring his or her heart rate. Show your child how to feel and count his or her heart beats.

Mr. James Unger comes up with unique ways to relate topics to his fourth grade students. His creative side spills into his classroom daily, and that serves to motivate the students. Using wacky voices, having students do a self-created “Ones, Tens, Hundreds” dance, turning the room into an outer space adventure to make learning geometry exciting, and using mnemonic devices are just some of his tricks. Mr. Unger says, "I strive to make learning come alive, and I find that I can do that by connecting with my students through humor and imagination. My teaching is often a form of entertainment for my students, for we all know you will pay attention to things you enjoy." He is enthusiastic about the subject matter that he teaching, and that rubs off! "I explain it this way, my goal is to have fun while teaching students to make learning fun!"

Mr. Unger’s coworker, Adrienne Thornton, says: James Unger is an extraordinary teacher. Every day he thinks of new ways to teach and engage the students in his class. He concentrates on making learning both easy and fun by having a hands-on approach to teaching. In math, he teaches the students in his class to not only understand the steps to problems, but to understand the why behind them as well. In science, he is constantly giving kids life experiences to tie learning to; from sending smoke into the air to sending light bouncing around the classroom. James has high expectations for his kids, and they rise to the challenge. Students say that he is a tough teacher, but that they learn a lot. Kids leave his classroom with a greater understanding of the concepts and a desire to learn more.

Have a Student Interested in Engineering?

Auburn University's Annual E-Day

If this statement and the entire article were not so pathetic, I could laugh. Dr. Walker is among the TOP reasons this school system is failing. I believe, and so do many others, that Dr. Atkinson is on the right track. There must be a lot of people in the Central Office running scared......

Here is the entire article...

Monday, January 30, 2012 11:44 PM

School Superintendent Progress Report: failing

by Steen Miles for the Champion News
If one had to assess the overall performance of new DeKalb School Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson to date she’d have to get a failing grade. Just when we thought things were on the uptick with the election of Dr. Eugene Walker as chairman of the school board, more highly publicized dunderhead activities on the part of the new school superintendent come to light.

One can only hope with Dr. Walker’s years of leadership, education experience and political acumen, that he will tutor Atkinson and help her make a passing grade. If not, her tenure here should be short-lived. As one parent so aptly put it, Atkinson is “clearly over her head.”

Perhaps one shouldn’t hold over the dear lady’s head the fact that she came from a 7,500-student system in Ohio to a system more than 10 times larger at some 95,000, but something has to be said of the need for comparable experience of which she is sorely lacking. It’s akin to allowing someone with crop duster experience at Uncle Ned’s farm to take a Boeing on a transatlantic flight. Atkinson’s recent actions of shifting and reassigning key personnel before her expensive audit and the band debacle give rise to serious questions about her management ability. Four lessons and no more:

No. 1. Put the children’s interest ahead of ego. Take time to learn the lay of the land before making wholesale changes. If you’re going to spend tens of thousands of our tax dollars for expensive personnel audits, why not wait for the audit findings before making wholesale changes that call into question the integrity and competencies of people being shifted? Good managers don’t leave blood on the carpet. Executions are swift. Torture is just not good form. To quote published reports from your spokesperson, drafts of the audit have guided some of your staffing changes. If we’re top heavy by 1,400 plus people and you plan to cut perhaps 300 you’ve got 1,400— not 300—people wondering if the ax will fall on them. How’s that working for you in boosting morale? It seems no good deed goes unpunished under this new regime. Good, dedicated, competent people in operations and technology, the deputy superintendent for teaching and learning instruction, chief of curriculum, purchasing, the nationally recognized, award-winning, “I told you so” CFO have all been side-lined. Why? Because you wanted to bring in your own people? Fine. We realize a new broom sweeps clean. But an old broom knows the corners. Know the lay of the land. Sometimes cuts are too deep. Brain drains and the lack of institutional knowledge have been the bane of many organizations that have found themselves having to rehire the very people they let go.

No. 2. Take time to learn the“culture” of the system. Band as an extra-curricular is to DeKalb what football is to the University of Georgia. You better have some awfully good reasons to suspend those activities and for goodness sake, don’t do it piecemeal. Opined in this space before, suspending band activities at 21 schools around the county to investigate “inappropriate” activity was foolhardy. This followed the hazing death of Florida A&M band member Robert Champion, a former DeKalb County student. To add insult to injury the announcement is made that the investigation is continuing into a number of adults including volunteers and former students. Are not these band members continuing to interact with the people under investigation? She took off like a bull in a china cabinet on that one. Oy!

No. 3. Talk to your board and key stakeholders before making major decisions. Get buy-in. No good manager works in isolation and should not have the appearance of same. The power of consensus is inclusion. Morale is said to be at an all-time low and speaking about the problems to anyone including board members could be a “career decision.” Fear is never a good motivator of people. President Eisenhower said people are sometimes like strings. You can pull them along almost anywhere, but you can’t get very far trying to push them.

No. 4. Don’t allow a “spokes-person” to speak for you on major issues. Don’t let your constituents hear about major changes from the media before you give them the courtesy of sharing your decisions with them. Own your decisions if you are confident about them. The time-tested PTA slogan might apply: “The school cannot live apart from the community.”

Our hard-working staff and teachers (no matter who they’re related to) need to be appreciated not deprecated so as to give the best to our children. How well does our new superintendent know the people she is bringing in? I’d dare say quite well. Careful, someone might call that cronyism. Atkinson might yet hold out some promise if she gets some badly needed counseling and a crash course in managing a large school system. It has to be noted that she cuts a striking figure as a parade grand marshal. Someone wondered out loud whether she exempted the parade from the ban on band activities so that the boys and girls could trumpet her ride down Main Street.
In one of the most exciting and emotionally exhausting meets I have ever seen in my 10+ years as a “Swim Mom”, the Dunwoody High “Wet Wildcats” were runners-up to Lakeside High School in this past Saturday’s DCSS Swimming Championships. Both the Dunwoody Boys and Girls teams were tied for 1st with Lakeside going into the final event – the 400 Free Relay. The Chamblee boys team took 1st, Lakeside 2nd and the Dunwoody boys 3rd. The boy’s team missed the championship title by 2 points!!! In a repeat of last year’s championship, the winner of the girl’s 400 Free Relay would take the title. The Lakeside girl’s relay team took first edging the Dunwoody Team which gave Lakeside the girl’s championship by 6 points.

Throughout the meet and even after the disappointing end, these Dunwoody High student/athletes displayed amazing class and sportsmanship. To watch the team lineup at the end of the pool to cheer on their relay teammates was an awesome and moving sight. They are a credit to their parents, Dunwoody High School and the Dunwoody Community.

Some information about the Dunwoody High Swim and Dive Team: Swimming is not a major sport and gets very little attention and acknowledgment from DCSS (3 pools for the entire county, really???), despite the fact that many DCSS swimmers have gone on to earn swimming and/or academic scholarships. There are no big televised signing days or articles in the AJC and that is disappointing in my view. Swimmers and Divers are among the brightest and best DCSS has to offer. I have been told that the DHS Swim/Dive Team has the highest GPA of any of the sports teams at Dunwoody. There are almost 100 members of the Dunwoody High Swim and Dive Team!! The team practices 4 to 5 days a week beginning at the end of October (many of these students having just completed softball or Cross Country), through the end of January. A few weeks ago this team participated in 3 Swim Meets in the span of 7 days – an exhausting schedule for the team and the coaches!!! Not only does the DHS team compete against the other top DCSS swim programs, Lakeside, Chamblee, Druid Hills, the team also competed against St. Pius and Wesleyan – two of the top private school programs. These students and coaches give their all and should be commended for another great Swim and Dive Season.

If you come across a member of the Wet Wildcats or Coach Rae Colley, Coach Corky Gibbons or Dive Coach Chris Wilson, give them a shout-out for a job well-done!!
Becca performed a beautiful 11-dive program to take the championship, followed by Lakeside in 2nd and Druid Hills in 3rd. Dunwoody was set up to go 1-2, but an unfortunate technicality on her dive sheet cost Natasha Briggs the medal she so deserved on the very last dive. Becca was last year's bronze medalist, and she used that experience to her advantage in bringing home the County Championship! Way to go, Becca!

Dunwoody’s male divers performed exceptionally well also in a ridiculously tough field. Adam Julian earned a State-Qualifying score to finish 4th and Bret Davis finished just behind in 6th.

Good job Coach Wilson and the dive team!!

Now the swimmers take over. The 500 Freestyle prelims were also held Thursday night. All 4 of Dunwoody’s entrants, Jay St. Onge, Chas Wildner, Lindsay Caldarella, and Rebecca Friedman, qualified for the 500 Free Finals.
