These are some photos from the event Real and Virtual Worlds: A Forum On Today's Latino Americans. An informative discussion that took place last week at KPCC's Crawford Family Forum. It was an event sponsored by #LATISM and it's part of SCPR's One Nation initiative which will bring us more events throughout the year. It was a pleasure to attend and photograph. Photography Workshop with Venice Youthbuild

Last week we did workshop with the students of the Youthbuild program at John Muir Charter School in Venice, CA. Above are some of the photos we made.

This organization is doing good work with youth who struggle with poverty, gang affiliation, drug abuse, young parenthood and other barriers to moving beyond their circumstances. You can learn more about the program here and go to this site to become involved.

I went to Photo L.A. this year after not having gone for a few years. There were of course elephants in tutus dancing in the moonlight but there was also some really good work.

Youth Speak Collective is a non-profit organization in Pacoima California that is making a positive difference in the community by providing support to local youth through various programs. Cooks County - My Restaurant Recommendation for 2012

Some months ago I worked with friends Dan Mattern and Roxana Jullapat on a shoot. We had fun and created some beautiful images (see above). Recently Dan and Roxana, along with some partners, opened Cooks County Restaurant. I had dinner there a couple of weeks ago and now I have to recommend it to everyone. Appetizers, mains, sides, desserts, everything is delicious, interesting wine list too. The food is made with fresh, locally sourced, quality ingredients. I am very, very happy for Dan and Roxana. We have been friends for about 10 years now (!!). I know that they are artists who care about their craft. They make food that is simple and elegant with a lot of thought behind it. They deserve all the support they can get and you will have had one of the best meals ever. Check out their website for more information. If you live in Los Angeles you really should go. If you are visiting Los Angeles make it part of your plans.

This past Tuesday I photographed the All in the Familia event at Southern California Public Radio's Crawford Family Forum. It was a great conversation where people from very successful Hispanic family businesses told their story and discussed what it is like to work with your family. We laughed, we cried. Check out the conversation here, it is inspiring and entertaining. Leslie Berestein Rojas has written about the event on her Multi-American Blog. Thanks very much for SCPR for putting the event together and especially to Edgar Aguirre for asking me to come and take photos.

Hi everyone. I hope you had a great summer and are now enjoying this fall weather. I am sending this e-mail today to share some new work. Among some of the things I have been busy with are these two portraits of Los Angeles.

I have been going to the site of the Occupy Los Angeles protests to make portraits of the participants. It has been and continues to be a very interesting experience. I support these protests for various reasons but simply put, I am excited that people are standing up to have their voice be heard. The passion that is driving people is inspiring. I also recently photographed Los Angeles for the LAPD Foundation. I had the opportunity to travel around the city in an LAPD helicopter a few times. It was a wish come true combining both my love of this city and the dream of flight. You can see a portfolio of these photos here: L.A. is Beautiful

I love that both of these series happened around the same time because it is a rare opportuntiy to get to photograph two very different facets of the same thing.

Last week I went to Stephen Cohen Gallery to see the Vivian Maier show that is on display. An interesting thing about her is the story of the discovery of her work, the work is good. I was looking at it and happened upon the work of Liz Steketee . Holy shit! I had never seen her work and I loved it. The images are very interesting but I was more impressed with the prints. They are actual objects of art. Some of them are made to look like old black and white family snapshots torn out of an album but they are about ten times the size what the original print would be. The level of craft is amazing plus the images a bit bizarre. Check out the work on her site but even better see the work in person of you ever get a chance.

Went back out to LA City Hall yesterday. Took some more portraits. Though there seemed to be a lull in energy and direction when I was there there is definitely not a lack of passion. I met people from a church, a communism advocate, a long time activist, a young unemployed man, a homeless women. The thing all the people I talked to have in common is their passion.
