Hidden Gems of Gujarat- Unnamed wonders - 1

This blog post is a joint effort with my co-travelers , photographers and dear friends Hibru Patel, Lalit Jain, Priti Bhatt and Shri Parikh. Special thanks to Ria Patel for her youthful exuberance and joie de vivre which made this trip even more special.

Our trip to Roda temples near Himmatnagar, Gujarat, had whetted our appetite for such more trips. Our last stop on that memorable day was Mahakali Mandir atop a tiny hill at Sabali. The view from the top was very pleasing to say the least.. One can see the shimmering waters of Guhai reservoir on one side of the hillock. We made a mental note of exploring it on some future date. Few of our group members decided to climb the steps to reach the temple. I regret not joining them after I heard their oohs and aahs! They could see farmland dotted with rock formations and tiny domes of far away temples. But what was most interesting and intriguing for them was the cluster of temples they could see almost down below the hillock. When we saw the photos, we made plans to visit the area again and explore them. Unfortunately the scorching heat stopped us from doing it immediately.

Bouts of rain fall in June was heaven sent for us. Now our impatience to explore those temples needed to be assuaged. One balmy morning, we started our journey from Ahmedabad. Now road up to Sabali ,being familiar was easy to navigate and reach.

All our efforts to gather information about these temples proved to be useless. Not a word could be found on the net, at the moment our only source of information. The only nugget of information we could find was the image captured from Google earth shared below. It just provided the information that these temples belong to the Jain sect.

Social Media - Some thoughts

Do I need social media? This question haunts me time and again. Being a Photo Artist, I am not in a position to completely ignore it too. In recent times, I share love-hate relationship with social media platforms.

I became active on various platforms , particularly photo sharing ones, since I started photography in 2010. I needed the outlet for my creative pursuits. I needed the feedback , particularly in the initial stages of my photography career. I began with and was quite active on Flickr, a wonderful photo sharing site. I must admit, it really helped me not only as a photographer but also helped me in developing my persona, as I came out of the cocoon and started interacting with other artists. Next was Facebook. I have never considered Facebook as a serious photo sharing site. It is more of a social meeting site. Then came g+ . Absolutely amazing platform which contributed a lot for my development as a photographer. Sadly it will shut down on 2nd April'19. Instagram, twitter, MeWe and few others I visit and share on whenever mood takes me.

Do I need social media?

Yes, social media helped my development as a photo artist, I met some wonderful people online and made lifelong friends. But, I am no longer a starry eyed photographer or user of SM as disillusionment with SM platforms have slowly crept in.

I started photography for my personal joy, hobby which made me forget everything and I began to live for it. I got feedback , fortunately mostly positive , on various SM sites. I also studied and enjoyed photos of many other photographers. Impact of these two important factors, positive as well as negative, made me rethink about need and importance of social media.

Let me write about sharing and feedback factor first. As years progressed, I realised that I needed and waited for feedback on my work, personal joy of capturing and sharing had taken a backseat.And that realisation was a first nail. When any artist claim that they share on social media for personal joy without expecting anything in return then he or she is deceiving oneself.

I became close observer of people's online behaviour. Feedback one receives depends on how active you are. More active you are more likes and comments you will get. One may earn respect as an artist but response you get depends on how active you are. Out of sight out of mind or you scratch my back I scratch yours is the dictum of all SM platforms. And it is not a pleasant scenario for any artist. One needs to follow , not only follow but be actively engaged, to get decent response to one's work. That made me wonder about genuineness of the response one gets. And in all this where is the place for constructive criticism? Any artists thrives on constructive criticism or genuine feedback. Do you really get it on social media? I doubt. One needs to be more active at SM rather than actually working at developing one's art. Groupism, where this far and no further factor is strong, is another issue I have faced and observed. Sadly that is a reflection of society today.

Judging work based on the response received, which may or may not be genuine , can go against development of any artist. SM can make and break career of an artist, which is really a scary thought. Advertisements to teach you tricks to increase your followers is a case in point. If at the end it is all to do with tricks and keywords and scratching someone's back where does it leave an artist?

But can any artist leave SM completely? Unfortunately NO. Artist needs an audience. Artist can exhibit work periodically or get it published. But to bring the crowd in or create a follower base for published work one needs to take help of SM. SM has become necessary social evil. Immediacy is the biggest advantage that SM has over other avenues. Artist gets immediate feedback on SM and that can also help in the development as an artist. Here, one assumes that feedback is genuine! Ideal way will be to strike a balance somewhere and take the response with pinch of salt, particularly when one is not overly active on SM.

One can withdraw from social media, only if, one truly and genuinely creates for own pleasure and not for the world out there (that would be nirvana!) or one has reached a position in one's field where SM response doesn't matter.

Personally speaking, I prefer to take a break from time to time and concentrate on learning other aspects relating to my hobby or allocate time for other hobbies. SM is not going to change by my raving or ranting, so better keep a healthy distance.

Journey through ancient India begins again.

It was difficult to walk away from idyllic and spiritual surroundings of Shiva temple and "Kund", but temptation to explore further was equally strong.

Side note: Many statues and artifacts of these temples are kept in Baroda museum. ASI has failed in providing any historical or archaeological information about these temples at the site.

We started our walk through ravines of the river Hathmati or of some stream which must be meeting the river nearby. We were on a look out for Navgrah Temple and Shiva temple. I wish ASI had put board showing the way to those temples. Though maybe topography made it impossible for them. And to be truthful it was interesting to search for them and find them.

Both the temples were on the mounds. Maybe to protect them from over flowing river during monsoon.Our first climb was to Navgrah Temple. Temple precinct was peaceful with occasional chatter of jungle babblers breaking that quietness. One feels like whispering at such places so as not to disturb the serenity.

Navgrah temple is so called because 9 planets of astrology are depicted on its door panel. Pillars have statues of Apsaras or dancers. Surprisingly few of the statues are better preserved than at other temples.

As a photographer, I loved the play of light and shadow on the temple and it's compound. Many artifacts , collected by the ASI from surrounding areas can be seen strewn around the compound. We settled down on the stones and enjoyed some quiet moments. One can see lush Green wheat fields on the backside of the temple. ASI has also done plantation on one side of the temple. After a little walk we could see mound on which Shiva temple was situated. Climbing was little tricky as steps were broken and loose.

Shiva temple, considered to be the largest in the group is in dilapidated condition. 2001 earthquake has really taken its toll. Beautiful Nandi statue with missing head can be seen in front of the temple. Cracks were visible all over the temple and one rather worried about going inside the temple.

Sun was really making its presence felt now. Time for lunch and some rest! We left ,enriched by what we saw and carrying beautiful memories forever.

Why give it a meaning?

I have been asked many times, what thoughts run in my mind when I lift my camera to capture an image. And I am always at a loss to answer this seemingly simple question. I have been advised by many people to think of or to philosophies my reasons for choosing a subject. Unfortunately for me it does not work that way. Frankly, never ever any deep thoughts or philosophy take over my mind when I see the subject I want to click. It is just an instinct which makes me choose a subject. Some inherent beauty I see in it, may be a beauty which only I see.

My vision of Wheat fields

For me it is something to do with feeling, subject raises in me, which may not be profound at all. It can be just framing I like, composition I like, abstractness of it which I like, face I like, shape I like. At the end they all represent my vision. What I find most difficult is to give reason behind my capture. What thoughts ran in my mind when I clicked? I would say none. There is no reason, there is just love of capturing what I see and what I experience. Feeling of oneness I get with my subject obliterates all other thoughts from my mind. It is pure meditation where no thought exists. It is me and my subject to the exclusion of everything else.

So when I am asked what you were thinking, I turn blank, because at the moment of capture I was in conversation with my subject and not thinking. When I look at my picture later on, I give it a thought, trying to attach a reason and I always fail, because that seed is not there. It is very difficult for me to give my feelings a name, my experience a title. In rare cases, it suddenly springs and then I realise that it is not related to experience of the time of capture, but it is related to something which I may be feeling at that particular moment.

I do not have a habit to go in search of a meaning of other photographer's photo or try to go deep into photographer's mind. May be a trait I should develop. I feel that each one of us has a different way of "looking" at things. For me it boils down to whether I like the way of his or her, looking at the subject. And here looking does not have any deep meaning attached to it. For me it is like love at a first sight. I like it at a first glance or I do not.I appreciate the vision of the photographer.

I do photography to go away from it all, to leave all seriousness of life behind, to attain that blankness of purpose. Can’t something be done for the fun of it, for the enjoyment you get out of it? Why give it a meaning?

Hidden Gem of Gujarat - Roda Temples , Himmatnagar

I had heard about Roda temples of Gujarat sometime around 2011 and since than I was looking for opportunity to visit them. 8 years later I could fulfill my wish when my photography friends decided to do photo-walk there. Located some 15 kms from Himmatnagar on Khed- Tasia road these temples are worth visiting for history and photography lovers alike.

Once you take a turn towards the direction of the temples , you ride on the dirt track among the wheat fields. For city folks like us , fresh air and bountiful fields were pure delight. As a photographer I itched to photograph the vista.

Roda group of temples, built in 8th or 9 th century , were badly damaged in 2001 earthquake. ASI has surely done a wonderful job of restoring them and it seems the restoration work is still in progress. All the temples are at elevated level and one gets a feeling that in old times a river must be flowing along these temples. It is believed that originally there were some 125 ( numbers vary from 109 to 125) temples in the area , today only 6 of them remain.

First thing I noticed about the temples was their architecture. I felt the affinity to temples from southern part of India. later on when I started reading about it, I came to understand that they can be compared to temples of Hampi and other places in Karnataka.

A glimpse of this Shiva temple. albeit in state of semi-ruin was enough to convince me about the beauty I should expect as we go further ahead. In the first precinct one can see this Shiva temple apart from Bird Temple. Few remains of the carving inside are proof how people from that era valued life other than humans.

Cool winds and cloudy atmosphere made our trip all the more pleasant. Important point to note here is that one must carry enough water and food supply as there are no restaurants or "Dhaba" nearby. And this must be one of the most ideal place to do picnic, so why not carry your food!

As we went further ahead on the dirt track, we found another gem, best of them all, precinct with three temples with "Kund" in front of them. "Kund" (reservoir) was quite similar to the one at Modhera Sun Temple. May be they were built during the same period. Shiva temple had a Shivling and saw steady stream of visitors as it was a Shivratri day. Out of three, one temple was in ruins with just a base on the view. Third one, according to the information I have gathered, is a Vishnu temple.

We forgot time in this peaceful and divine surroundings. It was so interesting to go back in time and contemplate history of bygone era.

Street Photography - A Point of View

Today street photography is the most followed genre of photography. Anyone with camera, mobile ones included, becomes a street photographer or aims to be a street photographer. It actually makes me happy to see so many young, enthusiastic photographers. In a way they all contribute towards popularity of art, and photography for me is an art.

Latest trend I see in street photography is juxtaposition of different elements. In simple terms juxtaposition means putting elements , subjects side by side to achieve some kind of effect or give meaning to the art or picture. In a mad rush to adhere to the trend, I see photos which are captured with only aim to juxtapose elements. There are very few genuinely talented photographers who achieve that perfect balance of elements to tell a story which is readable or interesting. May be I am out of sync with modern world of street photography. A bird flying in the sky, leg or hand of someone protruding from the edge of the frame , a dog or a cow lazing around or doing gymnastic, all in one frame, is a scenario I see too often. Hope some one will come up with an unusual and unique story represented by combining various elements.

In the meantime, I will follow what my emotions identify with.. classical and yet slightly abstract view at street photography.

Sidi Saiyyed's Mosque ,Ahmedabad

Recent visit of Prime Minister Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Abe has once again brought attention of the world to beautiful lattice windows of Sidi Saiyyed Mosque of Ahmedabad.

It was built in 1573 by Sidi Saiyyed , slave of Sultan Ahmedshah , in last year of his rein. Built in Indo-saracenic tradition , it is famous for its beautiful stone carving. Beautifully intertwined tree and it's foliage is delicately and artistically carved out.

Center window of the western wall of the mosque is left uncarved. Two different versions are attributed to this. According to one version, it could not be completed as Mughals invaded Gujarat before it could be finished. Another version blame it on British. It is hinted that this beautifully carved window was carved out and shipped to London.

Vadnagar - Remains of the Buddhist Monastery

It is not so well known that, Gujarat was once thriving center of Buddhism and has many relics to prove it , including caves and Ashokan edicts. As the state gets ready to showcase it's Buddhist heritage next week , I recollected my visit to Buddhist relics in Vadnagar, Vadnagar, famously known as home town of Prime Minister Modi, has recently again come into limelight with excavation of Buddhist monastery.

In 7 th century AD, Hiuen Tsang mentioned about Vadnagar ( or Anandpura as it was known at the time )as being one of the most important monastery.of the period. 7 Monastic cells have been excavated by 2016. Unfortunately locals have built houses on the adjacent land making it impossible to excavate it further

Buddhism flourished in Vadnagar between 3 rd and 9th century AD. As per ASI, it was built in three phases and they found remains from 1st and 2nd century AD too. In their excavation of 2015 , they found excellent water management system with well laid out canal system. Large number of coins and artifacts were also found establishing close connection with the silk route.

Vadnagar is 100 kms from Ahmedabad and can be reached by state highway 71. This more than 2000 years old town was fortified by Solanki dynasty and few relics of the era can also be visited

Enjoy dinner of “Hot and Tasty” chilly Bhajiyas at the lake. Not to forget the hot corn cobs and Malabari parattha.

Strong smell of coffee covers entire town of Yercaud. For coffee lover like me it is a heaven. Town , though not quite big, can be quite crowded during working hours. We visited Vinayak Coffee shop and bought some freshly ground coffee. Owner explained to us that ideally coffee should contain 12 to 15% chicory and not more. Pepper is another thing to buy from the market here.

There are few typical “points” to visit which all hill stations boast of. Lady’s seat, Pagoda point, Killiyur’s waterfalls to name a few. Highest point in Yercaud is Sherveroyan temple. Temple is inside the large rock. One needs to bend and go inside to pray to the deities Sherveroyan and Cauvery.

Our stay was arranged at Lake Forest hotel. Its colonial buildings and wooded environment transported me to another world.

This charming little hill station doesn’t have much to offer like its other stellar competitors. And I think therein lies its attraction. From Hotel Lake Forest to its scenic drive to its shimmering lake in twilight it holds your interest. For people living in South India it will be a wonderful way to spend a long weekend.

Being a photographer, its charm made my creative juices flow.

Yercaud- Hillstation of Tamilnadu - Part-2

Anyone visiting Yercaud must spare few hours to take 31 kilometers scenic drive in Sheravoy hills. Our drive took us right up to Cauvery peak and back.

Beauty around is seen to be believed. Coffee, pepper and orange plantations abound. Teak plantations are in plenty. Peeping in the woods, one can find lovely colonial planter’s bungalows.

Misty atmosphere and smell of vegetation prevails. We stop frequently to enjoy the beauty which I have rarely seen in my frequent travels around India. Hidden charms of Sheravoy hills are on display through entire route. I feel this is a must do thing for any traveler to Yercaud.

YERCAUD - Under-rated Hillstation of Tamilnadu -1

Any talk about hill stations of South India is likely to include Ooty, Coorg, Munnar , favourites of travelers. Yercaud,in Tamilnadu, for reasons unknown, has been relegated to backseat. Situated at height of 5000 ft., in Sheravoy hill range, it is situated just 28 kms from town of Salem. My recent visit there has convinced me that its beauty is highly underrated. It has its own charm and has retained, more or less, characteristics of the town of yore.

Road to Yercaud

With trusted Canon 7D in tow, we undertook a journey to Yercaud on picturesque mountain road consisting of 20 hairpin bends.Each curve of the road brought a beautiful vista in sight. With not much written in praise about Yercaud, my expectations were pretty low. And to be frank, the first sight did nothing to alleviate that feeling. But as the hours passed its special charm grew on me. Yercaud’s name is derived from lake at its center. Yeri means lake and Kaddu means forest. Established by British, it came to be known as Yercaud. Life of this tiny town revolves around its lake. It is worth spending time at the lake at twilight which makes its water shimmer with wonderful glow. Eating corn cob and enjoying the setting sun can be highlight of the evening.

Hingolgadh, situated in Rajkot district, presents a stark contrast to the surrounding arid region of Saurashtra. Declared as sanctuary in 1980 , it is a place to visit for birders. In 1984, nature education camp was started at the site , providing nature education to children of Gujarat. One can reach Hingolgadh via Ahmedabad (180 kms) or via Rajkot (75 kms) by road. Our journey from Rajkot was bumpy as road was in bad condition due to incessant rainfall of few weeks. 75 kms journey took us almost two hours. Unfortunately sign boards were nowhere to be seen , requiring us to stop frequently and inquire about the sanctuary.

Hingolgadh - nature in all its glory

Indian Pitta, also known as Navrang, bird native to the subcontinent come to Hingolgadh, somewhere in June, for nesting before the monsoon sets in. They migrate from Himachal Pradesh, plains of Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. They return back to their native states by end of August. By the time we reached, Hingolgadh, all pairs except the one, had left Hingolgadh. We were lucky to see this pair and their nest.

Faces of India -16

I am back to my favourite subject: Faces of India.

I visited remote tribal area of my state last year. It was interesting and enlightening experience to meet tribal people, in particular children.

I particularly enjoyed photographing this pair of sibling. In spite of their poverty stricken background, they were amazingly smart and sharp. Their expressive eyes were endearing.

She was a one beautiful woman. Staying in the back of the beyond she had a poise and charm to beat any urban woman.

Street Photography - My point of view

My definition of street photography has become quite fluid with time. It keeps on expanding as I immerse myself in exploring it.

Passing time- Street Portrait

Thinking about what street photography is, leads me to a field or subject or a genre which has a huge possibilities and huge scope.

Yet, I am much clearer about what is not street photography for me, namely:

1. Landscape photography
2. Nature photography
3. Wild life and bird photography
4. Product photography
5. Studio photography.
6. Photography done inside one's own home.

Genres like architectural photography, abstract photography, people and portraits , photos captured on the beach , forest or mountains, bus or railway stations, inside train or subways, are part of street photography for me.

Subway stories- Tokyo- Street Photography

Simply anything and everything that happens on the street or belongs to the street can become a subject for street photography. Once you leave your home and you are out, street becomes your playground. Obvious exceptions being point no.1, 2, and 3 described above, though roads or tracks may be part of that experience and can fall under category of street photography.

My heart lies in...

After spending 6 years in the filed of photography and many dialogues with myself, I have reached a firm conclusion, my heart and interest lies in the genre of abstract photography.

Intricacies interpreted

Abstract photography and all its genre captivate my imagination. Abstract, Realistic abstract, Abstract expressionism all interest me as art forms and I try to interpret and use those forms in my photography. Abstract photography is the way I see, experience and feel the world around me.

I do enjoy street photography including candid street portraits , for completely different reasons. Street photography gives me opportunity to travel, to meet people and reach wider audience. In its broad definition, Street photography documents the world as it exists. Being an abstract photographer, I always try to give that little abstract twist to the street photography I do, as I prefer to interpret the scene in front of me as I feel it.

Why I avoid photo-walks.....

For me photography is a meditation and it requires complete union with the subject and its surroundings, making me oblivious to everything else. It is a pursuit to be followed in solitude. And hence when I am invited for a photo walk, I generally indicate my inability to join.

When I look at pictures I have captured during photo-walk , I observe lack of concentration and forced efforts. When I look back and re-construct the photo walk and think about the moment I captured a particular photo, I see cacophony of moments reflected in that photo.

If it makes me "self-concentrated" photographer, then I am. In pursuit of my art, I prefer to work under circumstances which makes me feel comfortable.

Someone asked me very interesting question. Do you see in abstract or do you create an abstract? Question which made me think about my photography , which can be fairly abstract or sometimes rather strongly so.

If you look at the palm leaf above , one thing becomes very clear that I do look at my subject in an abstract manner. For me it is not a palm leaf but some object with a strong shadow and lovely textures.That is the first thing I noticed about it. Moment I saw it this way, it stopped being a palm leaf. This confirms the first part of the question that I do look at things in an abstract manner.

While I was shooting this photograph, I realised that by taking a photo at certain angle, I can make it look like steps. And I shot it according to that vision. This confirms the second part of the question that I create an abstract.

I don't think any artist, and I consider myself a photo artist, restricts herself or himself to thinking in one particular way. It is a constantly evolving process which ends with the saving of the edited version of the photo in the hard disk and even beyond.
