Railway lines for hauling materials had been laid as early as 1835. Most of the earliest railways were pulled by horses or men.

The first steam locomotive in the country was Thomason, commissioned in 1951 for hauling construction material in Roorkee for the Solani viaduct. It had a short life though, and was decommissioned after a boiler explosion within nine months.

The Indian government, in 1953, released a stamp to mark the hundred year anniversary of the event.

'Defeat? I do not recognise the meaning of the word!': Margaret Thatcher's best quotes

When Margaret Roberts applied for a job with ICI in 1948, an assessment noted that she was 'headstrong, obstinate and dangerously self-opinionated'. Both before and during her political career Baroness Thatcher gave the world a series of memorable quotes. Here are some of the best:

'I wasn't lucky, I deserved it' – Comment on receiving a school prize aged nine

'If you want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman.' – Speech as an MP in 1965

'It will be years – and not in my time – before a woman will lead the party or become prime minister' – Speech in 1974

Mrs Thatcher gives her closing speech at the Conservative Party Conference following the IRA bombing of a Brighton hotel in 1984

'It's the Labour Government that have brought us record peacetime taxation. They've got the usual Socialist disease – they've run out of other people's money.' – Tory Party Conference, 1975

'Any woman who understands the problems of running a home will be nearer to understanding the problems of running a country.' – Election campaign, 1979

'Where there is discord, may we bring harmony. Where there is error, may we bring truth. Where there is doubt, may we bring faith. And where there is despair, may we bring hope.' On winning 1979 election

'Pennies don't fall from Heaven – they have to be earned here on Earth.' – Speech at Lord Mayor's Banquet, 1979

'To those waiting with bated breath for that favourite media catchphrase, the U-turn, I have only one thing to say: You turn if you want to. The lady's not for turning.' Speech at Conservative Party Conference, 1980

'I don't mind how much my ministers talk, as long as they do what I say' – Interview, 1980

'No one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions; he had money as well.' – TV interview, 1980

'My policies are based not on some economics theory, but on things I and millions like me were brought up with: An honest day's work for an honest day's pay; live within your means; put by a nest egg for a rainy day; pay your bills on time; support the police.' – Interview, 1981

'Defeat? I do not recognise the meaning of the word.' – at the start of the Falklands War, 1982

'Oh, I have lots of human weaknesses. Who hasn't?' – Interview, 1983

'This attack has failed. All attempts to destroy democracy by terrorism will fail.' – At Tory Conference in Brighton after the IRA bombing of the Grand Hotel, 1984

'We had to fight the enemy without in the Falklands. We always have to be aware of the enemy within, which is much more difficult to fight and more dangerous to liberty.' – Reacting to the 1984-85 miners strike

'I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end.' – Interview, 1989

'We have become a grandmother.' – On the birth of her first grandchild, 1989

'I fight on, I fight to win.' – After failing to win enough votes to avoid a second round in the Conservative leadership contest. It is the very first International Day of Happiness " src="http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/03/20/article-2296374-15C285D6000005DC-527_638x618.jpg" width="418" height="405" />

Smile! It is the very first International Day of Happiness

The 10 essentials for happier living can be summed up as a GREAT DREAM as seen on the UN action for happiness website

The ten keys to a more cheerful life have, rather handily, be condensed into the acronym GREAT DREAM: giving, relating, exercising, appreciating, trying out, direction, resilience, emotion, acceptance and meaning.

Unsurprisingly several of the tips focus on increasing the number and quality of relationships in our lives.

Connecting with people both on a personal, and on a large societal level, is important to our happiness

Connecting with people, both on a one-on-one basis, and feeling more connected with society as a whole has been show to increase our sense of well being.

We all know the warm feeling we get when we spontaneously reach out and help someone, or a stranger performs a random act of kindness, such as helping you carry your bags, or even offering a smile on a hellish commute.

A study published in the Review of Personality and Social Psychology, showed that helping others increases life satisfaction, provides a sense of meaning, increases feelings of competence, improves our mood and reduces stress and can help distract us from our own troubles.

The UN also point out that while connecting with friends and loved ones our hectic modern lifestyles mean that while we may constantly plan that long overdue catch up without it ever happening.

The key to a happier you ...

1.Be part of something bigger

2.Do things for others

3.Connect with people

4.Take care of your body

5.Notice the world around you

6.Keep learning new things

7.Have goals and things to look forward to

8.Find ways to bounce back

9.Take a positive approach

10.Be comfortable with who you are

Being connected to something bigger, whether it's society or something spiritual, has also been found to be a common trait of those with an omni-smile as it can make you feel like your life has a purpose - even when you are taking out the rubbish in the rain!
flesh spreads across Europe

Dubbed 'the drug that eats junkies'

Majority of addicts die within one year of first hit

1.2million addicts in Russia

Cases now reported in Germany

A deadly drug which rots the flesh of users - and kills the majority of addicts within a year of their first hit - is spreading across Europe.

Krokodil originated in Russia but is now reportedly on sale in Germany - where several deaths have been blamed on its use - leading the Czech Republic's national drug agency to warn of its dangers.

Dubbed 'the drug that eats junkies', it rots from the inside, causing such severe damage to tissue that users suffer from gangrenous sores which open all the way to the bone.

Scroll down for graphic video on effects of Krokodil

<img alt="Korodil: Dubbed 'the drug that eats junkies', it turns its users' skin scaly, eating them from the inside. It also rots their brains

The condition can lead to limbs being amputated, but life expectancy for addicts is at the most two to three years, with the majority dying within a year.

Extraordinarily, around 1.2 million Russians are believed to have been ravaged by the narcotic, Time magazine has reported.

The drug, whose name means 'crocodile' - reportedly a reference to the way it turns users' skin scaly - also rots their brains.

Krokodil is a sickening cocktail of over the counter painkillers, paint thinner, acid and phosphorus. In some cases, petrol is also added.

The resulting mixture is called desomorphine - a derivative of morphine - and is extremely addictive.

Gangrenous: Krokodil causes extreme tissue damage, killing the majority of users within a year of their first hit

At just £4 per injection it is a much cheaper alternative to heroin, especially in Russia where the painkillers are available without prescription.

The drug's prevalence in Russia has led to the Czech Republic's national anti-drug agency to warn heroin addicts not to switch to the alternative.

Spokesman Michal Hammer said that although no cases had been reported in the country, its arrival in Germany would eventually see it cross the border.

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2063224/Curse-Krokodil-Fears-home-Heroin-thats-rotting-Russian-addicts-flesh-spreads-Europe.html#ixzz1e5Dc5p6J

100-year-old Fauja Singh smashes world record for the oldest marathon runner as he completes Toronto race in a sprightly 8 hours and 25 minutes

Fauja Singh finished 3,850th ahead of five other runners

He started running aged 89 and runs 10 miles a day

By Emily Allen

Last updated at 10:37 AM on 17th October 2011

A British man has quick-footed it into the record books becoming the first 100-year-old to finish a full distance marathon.

The world's oldest marathon runner Fauja Singh, from Ilford, east London, finished the Scotiabank Toronto Marathon in Canada in eight hours, 25 minutes and 55 seconds yesterday.

Sikh Mr Singh raised his arms in triumph as he crossed the finish line to clinch the remarkable Guinness World Record record.

SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO

Quick footed: Fauja Singh, 100, raises his arms in celebration after completing the Toronto Waterfront Marathon yesterday earning him a spot in the Guinness World Book of Records

Twenty-six miles is a hugely draining test for anyone and after almost 22 miles it looked like the centenarian might have to stop.

But he battled on for another two hours to reach the finishing line in 3,850th place - ahead of five other runners.

Triumph: Mr Singh waves at the crowds as he receives his marathon medal yesterday

Earlier this week he set eight world records for running distances between 100 metres and 5,000 metres.

Mr Singh, who only started running 11 years ago after the deaths of his wife and son, trains every day, running 10 miles.

He attributes his success to ginger curry, cups of tea and 'being happy'.

He holds the world record for the men's over-90 category after completing the 2003 Toronto marathon in five hours and 40 minutes.

He said last month: 'I am not a learned person in any shape or form. To me, the secret is being happy, doing charity work, staying healthy and being positive.

'If someone says I must stop running I ignore them - invariably they're younger than me. The secret to a long and healthy life is to be stress-free.

'If there's something you can't change then why worry about it? Be grateful for everything you have, stay away from people who are negative, stay smiling and keep running.'

Born in India on April 1 1911, Mr Singh was a farmer in the Punjab when he first developed a love for running, but he only took the sport seriously when he moved to the UK 50 years later.

He has completed seven marathons since turning 89 and has become the first person to sign up to the Edinburgh Marathon Festival 2012, 26.2-mile race, as part of four-man relay team with an average age of 86.

NEW DELHI: Advertisements, promoting morning-after pills, can be aired since the Drug Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) lifted the ban on October 10.
The embargo on advertising all emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) was imposed in January, 2010.
Then, concerns had been raised that the ads were promoting the drugs as regular contraceptives and misrepresenting abortion.
The DTAB's latest guidelines say a committee, which would include the principal of a reputed girl's college, representatives from NGOs and the advertising council, can screen the ads and the scripts before they go on air.
No ways the ads can stigmatize abortion as an option, besides making it clear that the pills' side-effects include disruption of menstrual cycles.
The DTAB has suggested that both private firms and the Union health ministry to advertise and "promote EC pills so that the rural population are made aware of its availability".
The ads can promote the ECPs' use for emergency only. "The drug is safe for use in young as well as older women. It has no serious side-effects even after multiple uses. However, it should be promoted as emergency contraceptive only and not as regular means of contraception," the DTAB says.
"The DTAB's decision has been sent to the Union health ministry for notification," said a member of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO). Seven companies market ECPs in India that have been available as over the counter (OTC) drugs since September, 2005.
India records 7 million abortions annually, and 20,000 women die because of abortion-related complications. Only two in five abortions are safe.
ECPs should be popped at the earliest, and not later than 72 hours after unprotected sex. Doctors advocate strongly against its indiscriminate use.
Around 8.2 million pills were sold in India last year. One of the most common misconceptions about the drug is that it is equivalent to an abortion pill. ECPs act as an interceptive agent and not an abortive one. Lack of proper knowledge about its functioning has led women popping them as regular oral contraceptives that are taken on a daily basis.
"It stops unwanted pregnancies in almost 855 of the cases. Unwanted pregnancies lead to unnecessary sufferings. There is a lack of adequate and safe abortion facilities, with at least 10 illegal unsafe abortions per legal ones," the DTAB says.
Experts said ECPs are comparatively heavier in dosage than regular oral contraceptives or birth control pills, and cannot be taken regularly as a family planning method.
The exact mode of action of ECPs is not known, but probable mechanisms include prevention of ovulation, fertilization and, or, implantation, depending on the phase of menstrual cycle when it is used.
The mechanisms for prevention of pregnancy are thought to happen before the implantation occurs. When used correctly - time and dose as prescribed - after a single act of unprotected sexual intercourse, the ECPs fail to prevent pregnancy in about 2% of cases.

http://m.timesofindia.com/PDATOI/articleshow/10360543.cms

Related articles

Morning After Pill Side Effects (mademan.com)

Women on Pill pick a dud in bed but a dude in the home (calgaryherald.com)

80,000 Women Die During Abortions in India (socyberty.com)

No threat to lesbian couple, say families

Image via Wikipedia

The families of runaway lesbian couple Beena Dhama (22) and Savita Rani (24), who had strongly opposed their marriage, finally seem to have accepted the two and their relationship. Except for Beena's maternal uncle, their parents have come to terms with the union and 'pardoned' them.

<ins><ins></ins></ins>

“Savita's parents as well as mine have accepted our relationship and forgiven us. It was Savita's parents who had agreed initially. Now, my parents too have fallen in line after several media reports. However, my uncle Satbir Singh still has a problem with our marriage and has threatened to shoot both of us,” Beena said.

Friends for over 15 years, the duo had fled their hometown Baghpat in Uttar Pardesh about two months ago and had been staying together in Kasan village near Manesar in Gurgaon.

According to a petition filed before the Gurgaon court, Beena was unmarried prior to July 22 while Savita had tied the knot with one Ombir last December. Her marriage was dissolved in panchayat proceedings held in Nipura tehsil in Baghpat.

While Beena's father Sukhbir Singh is a farmer, Savita's father Jai Parkash works with a private firm in Baghpat.

The couple's lawyer Durgesh Boken had moved a Gurgaon court against nine relatives of Beena, including uncle Satbir Singh, apprehending a threat to their lives.

The court has sent notices to the Haryana police as well as the relatives to appear in court on August 16, Boken said.

Krishanpal Singh, brother-in-law of Beena, who was present in court on Saturday confirmed that her parents had forgiven her and accepted their marriage. “We have no objection to their marriage now,” he said. Savita's family members too said there was no threat to the couple.

Beena and Savita, however, moved into a safe home in the complex of State Council of Education Research and Training under police protection on Saturday. The one-room set has an attached toilet, kitchen and other basic furniture but the runaway couple would have to arrange food on their own.

While the couple had sought women police personnel to be deputed, officials turned down their request and two male guards have been posted for their protection.

Meanwhile, the couple is looking forward in life and say they have the larger responsibility of bringing up four children of Beena's elder brother. He had died in 2007. The children, in the age group of 3 to 10 years, regard Beena as their father and also call her “papa”.

“Savita and I got married to bring up these children. I have been taking care of them ever since my brother died and his wife left them,” said the Class 12 dropout.

http://www.hindustantimes.com/News-Feed/NewDelhi/No-threat-to-lesbian-couple-say-families/Article1-727575.aspx

Related articles

Married Lesbian Indian Couple in Hiding Over Honor Killing Fears (towleroad.com)

India's first married lesbian couple given 24-hour protection (telegraph.co.uk)

Police Guard India's First Married Lesbian Couple From Their Own Bloodthirsty Families (queerty.com)

Besharmi Morcha aka SlutWalk launches website (rajneeshnews.blogspot.com)

Delhi Slutwalk conducted successfully

Sonakshi Babbar, Hindustan Times
New Delhi, July 31, 2011

After much criticism and unending debates, Delhi Slutwalk Arthaat Besharmi ...

As many as 700-800 people walked at Delhi Slutwalk arthaat Besharmi morcha today at Jantar Mantar, making it a success. People from all walks of life made their presence felt at the event. From foreigners, school children, teenagers, to city people, all were there to protest against sexual

<ins><ins></ins></ins>

harassment of women. Interestingly, there were as many men participating in the march as women.
Though the route of the walk was short - from Jantar Mantar via YMCA back to Jantar Mantar, the excitement among the participants was palpable.
The organiser Umang Sabarwal, a 19-year-old journalism student also attended the event along with her family, amidst police security.
Walk was followed by a streetplay and performance by Delhi Drum Circle.

India's diverse culture is reflected in Bollywood, its exuberant film industry that has embraced talent from across the country and all communities. Of late, many singers from the Christian community have lent their voices to soundtracks for Hindi and other desi cinema. We take a look:
Dominique Cerejo

Dominique Cerejo became popular with her song Yeh Tumhari Meri Baatein from Rock On.

She started singing at the very early age of seven. She participated in a church singing competition and won, and that spurred her on to take singing lessons to polish her voice.
Shankar Mahadevan, with whom she was acquainted, gave her a chance to sing in Dus, the first film he worked on. She was also part of the chorus in the title track of Taare Zameen Par. But things really changed for her after Rock On's Yeh Tumhaari Meri Baatein.

Some of the songs to her credit are: Sooraj Ki Baahon Mein from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dhoom Again from Dhoom 2, Aashayein Aashayein from Iqbal, I Just Wanna Spend My Life With You and I Am In Luv from Neal N Nikki, Yeh Kaisa Hai Shaher from Paanch, Baamulaaiza from De Dana Dan, Pyaar Impossible title track, and I Am In Love from Once Upon a Time In Mumbaai.

Image: Dominique Cerejo

Related articles

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Review (tornaryang.wordpress.com)

Fabulous at 53! Sharon Stone shows off her perfect pins in little red dress

Even when she's just meeting up with friends, Sharon Stone still looks like she could commandeer the spotlight on any red carpet.

The glamorous 53-year-old actress was spotted arriving for dinner with pals last night at BOA Steakhouse in West Hollywood, California.

Wearing a sleeveless red dress, Sharon put a fashionable foot forward as she stepped out of her car sporting animal print stilettos.

<img alt="Fabulous at 53: Sharon Stone looked fit and fashionable in a little red dress last night in West Hollywood, California" src="http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/07/02/article-2010602-0CD51F2B00000578-635_468x806.jpg"
The short dress showed off the star's toned legs and perfectly manicured toes.

For the outing, Sharon went virtually make-up free and swept her blonde hair back in a pony tail.

Ever since her appearance in the erotic thriller Basic Instinct, the star has been known for her daring and sexy fashion choices.

<img alt="Leggy: Sharon shows off her enviable pins as she walks into the restaurant to have dinner with friends"
And proving that she still has an enviable body for her age, she looked as slim and toned as she did when she dis-robed on screen in the Nineties.

Although her career has been less high-profile of late, Sharon- who is best remembered for the Basic Instinct films as well as such blockbuster hits as Total Recall - has been as busy as ever.

Recently, the actress appeared in several episodes of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.

<img alt="Classy exit: Sharon makes sure not to show too much leg as she exits her car" This is still a really prevailing concept and idea in our society that our apparel dictates the kind of treatment we receive and it dictates the respect that we receive.'

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1380450/Scantily-clad-protesters-join-Slut-Walk-end-rape-victim-blaming.html#ixzz1QJMN1rEK

NEW DELHI (AP) — Plans by a group of women to hold a "SlutWalk" in New Delhi to protest sexual violence have triggered a debate on whether such marches are appropriate in India and can change mindsets about women's status in the conservative society.

Organizer Umang Sabarwal said Wednesday the march is aimed at shifting blame from victims to perpetrators of crimes against women.

Similar marches have been held in cities around the world. The protests, which originated in Toronto, Canada, were sparked by a police officer's remark that women could avoid being raped by not dressing like "sluts." They protest the notion that a woman's appearance can explain or excuse attacks.

Millions of women are working in most sectors of the booming Indian economy but social attitudes have been slow to change and women face a daily barrage of sexual harassment.

Sabarwal, a Delhi University student, said the objective of the walk is to get people thinking about how women's lives and actions are restricted by the threat of harassment.

"We want to focus on changing social attitudes toward women," she said. "Every time a woman is assaulted, people don't blame the perpetrator of the crime. Instead women get a lecture about what they're supposed to wear and where they can go or not go."

However, plans for the walk have also drawn criticism from many women who say the use of the term "slut walk" is derogatory.

"Naming the protest 'slut walk' degrades women even if it has shock value," said Shobha De, a best-selling fiction writer.

"It's a campaign driven by women in the West. It does not connect with women in the Indian context," De said Wednesday on the TimesNow television channel.

Others accuse the organizers of craving media attention.

"How is this walk going to help millions of women in India? They are doing this for sensational footage on television," said Shaina N.C., a Mumbai-based designer.

India, a rapidly modernizing country, has a high incidence of rapes and sexual attacks on women. A government-backed United Nations survey found that about 85 percent of women in New Delhi are afraid of being sexually harassed while outside their homes for work or study.

The march, scheduled for late July, has been renamed "Besharmi Morcha," which means "Shameless Protest" in Hindi.

"The idea is to reach out to a maximum number of people, and people in India are better versed in Hindi than English as opposed to other countries where the 'SlutWalk' has been a success," said Mishika Singh, a college student involved in the campaign.

Copyright © 2011 The Associated Press. The actor, after filing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against Maharashtra government’s rule to raise the permissible age of alcohol consumption from 18 to 25, has now lent his voice to the Delhi version of the radical women’s movement ‘Slutwalk’. It has been renamed as ‘Slutwalk- Athaart Besharmi Morcha’ in India and Imran Khan praised the movement and its leader Umang Sabharwal for raising the burning issue of women’s right to dignity, safety and freedom.

Imran has also vowed to connect with the youngsters through a special page on Facebook and plans to mobilise public opinion, especially the youth, to support his endeavour of opposing the new drinking age rule of Maharashtra government.

However, it is a curious fact that all the ‘socially conscious’ Bollywood actors find only such issues which are taken up and mostly affect the urban elites. Imran, why not start a drive to eradicate the farmers indebtedness in the Vidarbha region in Maharashtra? Such an endeavour would serve a larger number of youth than merely filing PILs against a rule which, as everybody knows, will be broken anyway!

 <a title="http://www.filmitadka.in/201106251102/gossip/imran-supports-slutwalk-athaart-besharmi-morcha.html"
Here are some links and resources found on WIKIPEDIA regarding slutwalk.

The SlutWalk protest marches began on April 3, 2011 in Toronto, Canada and have since become an international movement of rallies across the world.[1] They are a protest against the belief that any aspect of a woman's appearance might explain or excuse rape.[2] The rallies began in response to remarks made by Constable Michael Sanguinetti, a Toronto Police officer, who suggested that in order not to be victimized, "women should avoid dressing like sluts."[3][4] The protest take the form of a march, by mainly young women, where some dress in ordinary clothing, and others dress provocatively; there are also speaker meetings and workshops.[5] Such protests have not been universally accepted as appropriate; for example some objectors have remarked that this approach is an example of women defining their sexuality in male terms.[6]

New Delhi: Organisers of India's first 'SlutWalk' have rebranded the event. The name has now been changed to 'Besharmi Morcha' which means 'Shameless Protest'.

The organisers feel that not all people in the national capital will understand the meaning of the word 'slut'. And more importantly may misinterpret the usage of the word for the protest. The organisers have finally settled down for 'Besharmi Morcha'.

Mishika Singh, one of the co-organisers told IBNLive, "The idea is to reach out to maximum number of people, and people in India are better versed with Hindi than English as opposed to other countries/cites where the 'SlutWalk' has been a success."

The dress code apparently is being questioned, as the common notion is that women have to be dressed in short skirts and hot pants to participate. Hence, aiming for maximum participation in support of the issue the so-called sensible dressing will be the order of the day.

"SlutWalks," which are now a global phenomenon to protest against sexual violence has seen women dressed in skimpy clothes in other parts of the world.

The first "Slut Walk" was held in Toronto this year after a police officer caused outrage by stating during a speech to university students that women should avoid "dressing like sluts" in order not to be victimised.

Related articles

SlutWalk plan triggers debate on women in India (theglobeandmail.com)

SlutWalk as a protest is a mockery of Indian Women & Issues (ajeetdiary.wordpress.com)

Slut-shaming?

HELSINKI: Samsung Electronics Co Ltd will become the world's largest smartphone maker this quarter, overtaking struggling Nokia Oyj which has lead the market since 1996, Nomura said on Monday.
In the next quarter Nomura also sees also Apple Inc overtaking Nokia, pushing the Finnish company to No. 3 in the rankings.
"Nokia looks set to relinquish its smartphone crown to Samsung and Apple," Nomura analysts said in a research note. "Further emphasising the shift in power to Asia is our forecast for HTC to almost match Nokia during 2012."
Research firms Gartner and Canalys both said they saw Nokia - which created the smartphone market with its 1996 launch of the Communicator model - losing smartphone volume leadership later this year.
"If Nokia's new phones are not well received in the third quarter and (with) the Galaxy S2 ramping up, Samsung might overtake them and become the smartphone leader in Q3," said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.
Nokia has lost initiative in the smartphone market to Apple's iPhone and Google Inc's Android devices, and at the lower end to more nimble Asian rivals.
Overall, Nokia still makes more cellphones than Samsung due to its strong position in basic cellphones and its wider distribution network in emerging countries.
The company is switching to Microsoft Corp's software from its own Symbian platform as part of an overhaul of its phone business set out in February by new Chief Executive Stephen Elop.
On May 31 Nokia abandoned hope of meeting key targets just weeks after setting them, raising questions over whether its new boss can deliver on the turnaround he promised.
Shares in Nokia were 0.6 per cent firmer at 4.33 euros by 0934 GMT, in line with a slightly stronger technology sector.
Daredevil tight-rope walker crosses 100ft-high rocky ravine without ANY safety equipment

One gust of wind could lead to almost certain death.

But daredevil tight-rope walker Andy Lewis, 24, appears perfectly relaxed as he crosses a 45ft long wire suspended over a 100ft ravine with no safety equipment.

At one point he even leaps into the air to strike a pose before landing inch perfectly back on the bright orange line.

Reaching new heights: Andy Lewis, 24, risks his life as he inches his way along the narrow tight-rope 100ft above a rocky ravine in California

Not satisfied that his deadly wire act was risky enough - the 6' 2'' daredevil decided to up the stakes by balancing on a part of the body not designed for - the tips of his ankles.

Venturing over an area called the Flat Sands in California, Mr Lewis, was literally at the top of his game.

In one hair raising picture, Andy looks to be praying for salvation as the unforgiving desert loomed ominously below him.

'The line is called ''the Mexican Caulk gun'' I never walked it with or without a leash before,' said Andy from San Francisco, who regularly risks his life in the extreme sport dubbed 'slacklining'.

'If I had lost balance I would either catch the line or die.

'Risking your life for no other reason than to just be able to have the consequence of death on your brain - this is the sport of free solo.

Relaxed: Mr Lewis has has become so confident with the extreme sport, dubbed slacklining, that he is able to jump into the air and strike a comical pose for the camera without losing his balance

'It melts everything else away inside your brain. The more I walk free solo, the more I am free.'

The shaggy haired slackliner was introduced to the sport after graduating from high school in 2004. Since this time Andy has honed his skills and decided to become a full-time slackliner in 2008.

Breathtaking: Mr Lewis would plummet to the hard rocks below if he fell and missed the line

He explained how he is able to balance on his ankles from such a terrifying height without plummeting to his death.

'It is just plain painful to balance on the tops of your ankles,' said Andy.

'The sheer strength it takes to build up the ability to balance on your ankles takes a long time.

'Once you get it though, you have it but in terms of things you can do on a slackline, and the things I have done free solo - I am only scratching the surface of the possibilities.'

Andy is now so dedicated to his art that he lives for it totally - and has even tattooed his arm with the word "slacklife" in commemoration to his beloved high wire sport.

Andy's skill and dedication means that he brims with confidence when he life is literally hangs in the balance.

'Just because I loose my balance, doesn't mean I won't catch the line,' he said.

'It would take a whole hell of a lot for me to miss the line when I have to.

'When I am free soloing, usually I am so confidant with my abilities on the slackline. I just stroll across - it doesn't even look hard.

'That is the problem with slacklining, the better you get at it, the easier it looks.

'That is why I think a lot of people don't get how hard and scary the sport really is.

'The true challenge is masked by years of preparation and trained talent.'

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1393453/Slackliner-Andy-Lewis-crosses-100ft-rocky-ravine-safety-equipment.html#ixzz1O7dVQhFj

Related articles

Class Act: Slackline Yoga (fitsugar.com)

Biker pulls first triple backflip (thesun.co.uk)

Actor Raj Kiran found in mental asylum in US

CNN-IBN
Updated Jun 01, 2011 at 10:10pm IST

Mumbai: Actor Raj Kiran, who had been missing for years, was located in a mental asylum in the US. Raj Kiran’s family has reportedly not been in touch with him for the last 10 years.

Kiran is known for his films like 'Karz' and 'Arth'. On a recent trip to the US, actor Rishi Kapoor found about his whereabouts through his brother Govind Mehtani.

About a month back, actor Deepti Naval had tried to locate Raj Kiran on Facebook, saying he had been last seen driving a cab in New York. Reports say that he has been suffering from acute depression.

CNN-IBN spoke to Mahesh Bhatt who directed Raj Kiran in much acclaimed film ‘Arth’.

“This was not a bolt from the blue for me. I had expected this to happen. These breakdowns occur. The same thing happened with Parveen Babi and then eventually she died a tragic death,” said Mahesh Bhatt.

Mahesh Bhatt said that he last saw Kiran in an ashram in India where he was being treated. He was suffering from mental affliction.

Raj Kiran's friends from the industry are now planning to get in touch with him and bring him back to the place he belongs, the movies.

Related articles

Underworld gangster takes Yash Chopra under toll (bollywoodtopstories.wordpress.com)

Another Bombay film industry tragedy - Raj Kiran (satyamshot.wordpress.com)

I Recovery Stick

Suspect your partner is unfaithful? The gadget that recovers deleted text messages could confirm your worst fears

Perfect for those in a less-than-trusting relationship, this gadget can retrieve deleted text messages.

The USB stick - called the iRecovery Stick - is designed to recover information that has been wiped from an Apple iPhone.

It can also retrieve deleted contact details and even mapping solutions, which show the destinations that the phone user has visited.

<img alt="Covert: The USB stick - called the iRecovery Stick - is designed to recover information that has been wiped from an Apple iPhone" src="http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/05/05/article-1383822-0BEA5D6100000578-828_468x165.jpg"
Unsurprisingly, it's proving very popular with those who suspect their other half has something to hide.

Ray Couch, spokesman for manufacturer Paraben, said: 'This gadget is good for everyone from suspicious wives and husbands to girlfriends and boyfriends.

'It's also aimed at the employer who suspects foul play from a member of staff and even the police.'

The USB stick gadget works by connecting to a computer, which is, in turn, connected to the iPhone.

Once the two devices are connected, the built-in software on the iRecovery Stick retrieves the deleted data on the phone.

It can take several hours to complete the process, depending on the amount of information that is retrieved.

It can also be used in more mundane circumstances, such as retrieving data has been accidentally deleted, including songs on iTunes.

Mr Couch said: 'We've had a lot of interest from the American police, in particular.

'Now they can find out what their suspects have been deleting without having to call in a specialist team.'

The gadget is 'future proof', its makers promise, meaning it is designed to run with future generations of the iPhone

Mumbai: Tata Motors is planning to launch a Nano model that will run 40 kilometres on a litre of diesel, matching the mileage of a typical 180cc motorcycle. It will be the most fuel-efficient car in India. The launch is expected this financial year.

A senior executive of Bosch India, which is helping Tata Motors develop the engine for the model, said, "We have worked with Tata Motors for Nano's petrol version and we are working with it for the diesel version too. The car has a two-cylinder, 700cc engine which develops healthy power without compromising on fuel economy. Although official test figures have not been revealed, we expect it to run 40 km on one litre of diesel."

A Tata Motors spokesperson said: "You are aware that Tata Motors continuously improves its products. But we do not provide guidance on our innovations."

At 40km/litre, the running cost of the new Nano will be Rs 1/km. The capacity of the fuel tank is expected to be 15 litres.

For Tata Motors, the diesel version could finally attract customers opting for two-wheelers - the original idea behind the Tatas' Rs 1 lakh car project. For instance, Bajaj Pulsar 180, which costs Rs 78,000 (ex-showroom, Mumbai), runs 40 km on a litre of petrol.

However, Bajaj Auto, too, is working on a petrol car with Renault and Nissan and aims to offer 40km/litre. The car is slated for launch in 2012.

Nano is the largest-selling Tata model in India with monthly sales of around 8,500. The country's largest selling car, Maruti Alto, records monthly sales of 25,000 a month.

Are U Suffering From “FOMO” ?

Can't pick a dress or a holiday in case a friend does better? You've got a modern malaise called FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out)

Do you ever find yourself standing in a supermarket aisle, unable to make up your mind which brand of cereal to buy? Or looking at the list of new films coming out, literally paralysed by choice about which one to see? Where to go on holiday? What colour to paint your bathroom?

Or, more invidiously, do you endlessly worry that where you are right now is not as much fun, or important, as somewhere else? That your friends are leading fuller, happier lives than you?

Sound familiar? Then join a very modern club. For we increasingly live in a world where choice is no longer a luxury, rather it’s a stick we beat ourselves with.

Modern Malaise: Do you ever find yourself standing in a supermarket aisle, unable to make up your mind which brand of cereal to buy? Or looking at the list of new films coming out, literally paralysed by choice about which one to see?

Faced with endless options and possibilities, we torment ourselves with the thought that every time we choose one thing over another, we’re turning down a myriad other possibilities, shutting the door on what might be something better.

If you recognise a part of yourself in this modern malaise — and I certainly do — then welcome to the latest syndrome: FOMO, or ‘Fear Of Missing Out’.

What was once known as ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ has morphed - in our modern, multi-media, multi-tasking, multi-choice age - into a full-blown psychological condition.

The symptoms? They’re all around us. We fill our shopping baskets with things we don’t need - just in case we miss out on that day’s ‘must-have’ dress or a special offer that others are taking advantage of.

In our social lives, too, we no longer settle for the friends we’ve got or the events we’ve got planned. We want more. So when we hear that someone has had a good time at a party which we didn’t go to, we’re envious, then full of self-doubt and anxiety that we must be less popular than them.

And in our brave new world of social media, where everyone is communicating what they are doing every minute of the day, this sense of paranoia reaches extremes, because we’re not only aware of our own choices but bombarded with those of others as well.

Take a look at the people in the cars alongside you next time you’re on the motorway. I’ll bet you at least one driver will be texting from their mobile phone — because the possibility of a social connection is more important than their own safety (and the lives of others).

These are the sort of people who interrupt one call to take another, even when they don’t know who’s on the other line. They check their Twitter stream while on a date, because something more interesting or entertaining just might be happening.

No escape: In our brave new world of social media, where everyone is communicating what they are doing every minute of the day, our sense of paranoia reaches extremes

Where once we only worried about keeping up with the folks next door, now we have to worry about keeping up with the whole world, who keep us updated 24/7 through emails, texts, Twitter streams and Facebook updates.

So, at the click of a mouse, you can hear about John’s holiday in the tropics and Angela’s gorgeous new Dolce & Gabbana dress, which she picked up in a sale, and which is going to look so cool at Fred’s party tonight.

Fred’s party? Help, you’re not even invited. What once remained secret is now public knowledge and, unless you are forged from steel, it’s impossible not to be affected by it.

And it can be paralysing — particularly for the young, who have never known another way.

The daughter of a friend of mine — lovely, talented and in her late 20s — won’t commit to a career because she thinks that going along one particular road will mean she’s shut out of others.

So she does four different jobs while simultaneously lamenting the fact that she didn’t train to be a doctor when she was 18. She wants to make a choice, because it will make life easier, but she’s paralysed by the fear of making that choice.

Another friend’s daughter is even more conflicted. According to her mother, she can’t decide on any social engagement until the last possible moment because she wants to keep her options open. The result? She spends most of the day deliberating about that night’s plans.

I used to go through a version of that, too — not spending my entire day planning the evening, but sometimes cancelling a date at the last minute because something else had come up that, at that moment, seemed more important.

I’ve also, I shamefully admit, agreed to go to up to four or five different parties or events on one single evening, unwilling to say no to any of them out of fear that I won’t be invited again, then juggling what to do, often with minutes to spare.

Leaving aside the potential rudeness of accepting an invitation and then not showing up, this kind of indecision, of holding out for what you think is the most interesting option, saps the spirit and creates anxiety.

Are you suffering from FOMO? These are the sort of people who interrupt one call to take another, even when they don't know who's on the other line. They check their Twitter stream while on a date, because something more interesting might be happening

I’ll never forget the time I cancelled a visit to my friend in hospital, who had just been through a very difficult labour, to go to a smart party in London where I thought I might meet a man (I should stress I was single at the time).

As so often happens in that situation — where you have let people down in your slavish desperation to make the most out of every conceivable opportunity — the party was terrible and I spent the evening regretting my decision not to see my friend.

Having too many options is paralysing and exhausting to the human psyche. It leads us to set unreasonably high expectations, question our choices before we even make them and blame our failures entirely on ourselves.

We can feel we’ve failed in everything — from our choices of consumer products (jeans, TVs, salad dressings) to our lifestyle choices (where to live, what job to take, who and when to marry).

Now that social media sites allow us to make instant comparisons not only with our friends but with people we’ve never even met face to face, the scope for this kind of undermining is limitless. I believe women are particularly affected by FOMO, prone as they are to comparing themselves to other women, and envy.

You buy one dress but your girlfriend buys the other one you were considering, and you feel resentful that she ended up looking better. You get a beauty treatment, but wish you had chosen another.

Hell, I have ruined entire holidays worrying I should have chosen another destination.
Richard Layard, LSE professor and co-founder of the Happiness Party, which launched last week, is an expert on the destructiveness of too much choice.

‘Too much never makes people happy, and if we’re given a lot of choice we reject it,’ he says, citing an experiment where a group of people were shown two shelves containing jars of jam.

‘One shelf had 30 jars, the other had six. They were asked which one they wanted to chose a jam from. Almost all chose the shelf with only six jars. It is more simple, less time-consuming.’

In his 2004 book The Paradox Of Choice, Barry Schwartz tackles one of the great mysteries of modern life. Why is it that societies of great abundance, where individuals are offered more freedom and choice (personal, professional, material) than ever before, are now witnessing a near-epidemic of depression?

Conventional wisdom tells us that greater choice for the greater good is always a good thing, but Schwartz argues the opposite.

He makes a compelling case that the abundance of choice in our Western world is actually making us miserable, and our current ability to rate our lifestyles and social status against those of others causes resentment, too.

'I believe women are particularly affected by FOMO, prone as they are to comparing themselves to other women, and envy'

A woman I know who works in advertising told me that she felt fine about her life — until she opened a Facebook account and started comparing every detail of her own life to those of her network of contacts.

‘I am 28, with three flatmates, and am perfectly happy with my lot. But then I see someone posting pictures of their precious baby or their wonderful new home, and I just want to die.’

On those occasions, she said, her knee-jerk reaction is often to post an account of a particularly cool thing she has done, or to upload a fun picture from her own weekend.
This may make her feel better - but, of course, it just generates envy, resentment and anxiety in another unsuspecting person, and thus a vicious circle is created.

The sad irony about this epidemic of FOMO is that we do miss out and end up diminishing our own lives. Life becomes something that simply happens while we’re waiting for something else - something better - to happen.

Not that we ever really experience the act of waiting for anything any more - there is always a smartphone to check, an email to read, which transports you from your own reality now, to someone else’s.

If there is any cure for this condition then it is surely the eventual wisdom of experience.

One of the great advantages of being older, I often think, is that I am nearly always happy to be right where I am, rather than living with an almost perpetual sense that I could be happier if only I was somewhere else.

Nowadays, I feel on top of my choices, and while I have a lingering sense of anxiety, even guilt, that I haven’t read Middlemarch, haven’t been to the Great Wall of China, still haven’t lost a stone since January, have failed to read a newspaper for two days and have played too many games of Scrabble on my iPad - I like the life I’m in more than I’ve ever liked it before.

The reality is that there are few things so truly important in life that they can’t wait. If you’re the Prime Minister, then you have a legitimate reason to check your texts during dinner. But everyone else, not so much.

Isn’t it time you, too, learned to settle for what you have, rather than clinging to the fear you may be missing out on something better?

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1381788/Have-got-modern-malaise-called-FOMO-Fear-Of-Missing-Out.html#ixzz1Kw99qGvm
