Drop Stitch Shell

Yarn: Berroca Cotton Twist - 6(6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9)
Size 6 (4.0 mm) 24” Circular Needle
Size 7 (4.5 mm) 24” Circular Needle
OR NEEDLES REQUIRED FOR KNITTER TO GET AND MAINTAIN GAUGE

Size: 28” (30”,32”, 34”, 36”, 38”, 40”)

Gauge: Moss Stitch - 5 Stitches = 1”
Drop Stitch - 5 Stitches = 1”

Version 1: Hip measurement is approximately 2” less than underarm measurement.

Version 1: With smaller circular needle cast on 126

(135, 144, 153, 162, 171, 180) stitches using the long-tail cast-on method.

Join, being careful not to twist.

Version 2: Hip measurement is equal to underarm measurement.
Both versions are knit in the round to underarms, then divided,
working front and back separately as if flat.
Version 2: With smaller circular needle cast on 140

(150, 160, 170, 180, 190, 200) stitches.

After 1st round, work the first stitch of each round
through back loop to minimize the effect of the circular join.

Round 1: Knit 1, Purl 1 to end of round.
Round 2: Purl 1, Knit 1 to end of round.
Repeat rounds 1 & 2 to for 16 total rounds.

BODY- Read completely before starting the next round. Switch to larger needle.

Version 1: Foundation Round 1 *P1, YO purlwise, P2 Tog, K3, Make 1, K3.*

Repeat *to* to end of round. 140 (150, 160, 170, 180, 190, 200)

stitches remain.

Version 2: Foundation Round 1 *P1, YO purlwise, P2Together, K7.*

Repeat *to* to end of round. 140 (150, 160, 170, 180, 190, 200)

stitches remain.

Round 1: *P3, K7.* Repeat *to* to end of round.
Repeat Drop Stitch Pattern until body length is
10” (10”, 10.5”,11”, 11”, 11.5”, 11.5”) from cast-on edge.

If you want the tank to be longer or shorter,
this would be the time to make the adjustment.

Drop stitch pattern will end before bodice is divided

and armhole shaping is started.

Last Drop Stitch Round - Versions 1 & 2:
*P1, YO purlwise, dropping the purl stitch that is being

replaced with the yarn-over, P1, K7.* Repeat *to* to end of round.

Switch to smaller needle.
Resume Moss Stitch for 1”(1”, 1.5”, 1.5”, 2”, 2”, 2”) then divide body into

two sections, placing half the stitches onto a holder.

The front bodice and back bodice will be worked back and forth

on your circular needle, then seamed at shoulders to finish.

NOTE: Sizes 30”, 34” & 38” are worked with an odd number of drop stitch sections.

Work 5 stitches into the beginning of next round, before dividing and binding off.

This will shift the drop stitch from the center of the front and back.

Begin Armhole Shaping:
Bind off 4 (4, 4, 4, 5, 6, 6) stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows.
Decrease 1 stitch at each armhole edge every other row 4 (4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6) times.
Decrease 1 stitch at each armhole edge every 4th row 3 (4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5) times.

AT SAME TIME:
When bodice 4” (4.5”, 4.5”, 5”, 5”, 5”, 5.5”) from armhole bind-off,
begin neckline shaping at next right side row:

Continue armhole shaping, then bind off center

14 (15, 16, 17, 17, 17, 18) stitches.

Join a second ball of yarn to work right front or back.

Work both sides of front or back simultaneously to maintain even shaping.
Decrease 1 stitch at neck edge every other row 4 (4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6) times.
Decrease 1 stitch at neck edge every fourth row 3 (4, 4,4, 5, 5, 5) times.

Continue working shoulder strap until bodice is

total length of 9.5” (10”, 10”, 10”, 10.5”, 10.5”, 10.5”).

Strap and bodice may be lengthened or shorten at this point if desired.

Join shoulders with a 3-needle bind off. Weave in ends.

AT LAST

When Ravelry.com Beta site opened in 2007, I waited with anticipation for my invitation to arrive. I was quick to post photos of my own projects with every intention of churning out the patterns that went with them.

I had been teaching knitting classes and knitting non-stop for a couple of years. Like many knitters, I had learned the basics as a child and over the following years picked up the needles, finished a project or two along the way, and then moved on to other projects that fit an ever-changing schedule - marriage, children, work, divorce and school - all the normal things that many of us have experienced in our twenties and thirties. Several times I let the yarn stash go, but always held on to the tools, books and magazines.

What I didn't count on were the many distractions and self-doubts that kept me from my goal. The bones of the patterns were in place, but I was afraid of actually putting the work online. The explosion of young knitters unleashed a generation of enthusiastic, computer savvy designers and breathed new life to my old needles. Certainly my patterns would not be missed.

One afternoon this fall I found a Ravelry message in my inbox. Someone was asking for the pattern. Shocked - I really had forgotten all about the pattern page - I logged onto Ravelry and found that there were over 50 requests for patterns. So with egg on my face and my needles crossed, here we go!

One Stitch At A Time
