netted yarn...

I've had several people to ask me where I bought the end peg pieces that I used to knit my ruffled scarves. Here is some more information about that and what you can do to use pegs and knit these scarves like I do.

First I watched Iselas video here. She uses the Knifty Knitter brand of knitting board in that video and you can find those at Michaels Craft stores or other craft stores. She is using the purple one and I can’t remember if it’s sold alone or in a set. That would be the easiest and cheapest way to go.

Now the way I make them is by using the end pegs from my adjustable loom. My post with photo and instructions is here. The adjustable looms would be too pricey just in order to get the end pieces. I purchase all of my looms and boards at www.dalooms.com as I think their quality is excellent. I believe their pegs have changed a little since I purchased mine, but they are still by far the best I’ve used. They have excellent service and this is the lady from the above video (Isela) and her husbands company.

Now what may be a good idea for you, is to get (2) of their Keepsake Looms. These should work just fine for making these scarves the way I do. You’ll only be using about 7 of those pegs anyway and it doesn’t matter what gauge or size they are. I think this is the way to go.

The only other thing you could do is to go and buy one of the Knifty Knitter brand knitting boards (the smallest one you can find) and have your husband to saw it in half to give you 2 separate sides. They cut pretty easily and you can sand the edges smooth.

Hope that helps!

" Have a blessed day!"

How to Knit a Ruffled Scarf using Pegs and Netted Yarn

I'm going to try and explain how I knit my ruffled scarves using the end pieces from my adjustable knitting board and the new ruffle type yarns which look like ribbon

until you stretch them out to reveal a netted type yarn that is about 2 to 3 inches wide.

First grab your end pieces. I'm using ends that have 8 pegs. I've added loops to only 7 of the pegs. Have the wrong side of the pegs facing you. Turn under about 2" of the yarn and place on a few pegs, then place loops on the other pegs and again on the first few. What you are doing is hiding the raw edge inside the ruffles to start. Add loops so that your working yarn is to the left.

Now, stretch out the yarn and take every other loop along the top edge of the yarn and place on the pegs going from left to right. (the top of the yarns edge will have loops and the bottom edge will have a finished edge)

Keep adding loops from left to right until all 7 pegs have loops on them. Now you have 2 loops on each peg. One from the cast on row and one that you just put on. Remember that on a few pegs you'll have 3 loops from turning under that first 2 inches.

Now tilt the end piece forward slightly and using your pick tool, knit off the bottom loop up and over the second loop and off the top of the peg. This is called knitting off.

After all loops are knitted off....

Tilt the end piece up and giving the bottom of the yarn a tug it should now look like this. Once you have knitted more rows you'll no longer have to tug as the weight of the scarf will do it for you.

Now you have to transfer these loops to the other end piece. If you didn't do this your scarf would only have ruffles on one side. You are essentially knitting around and around in a circle. Adding a ruffle to the front and then to the back of the scarf.

To get the loops to the other end piece, slide the other end piece up between the pegs where the loops are. Then transfer them one at a time to the right peg beside by lifting up and over from the back of the new end pieces pegs.

Once all loops have been transferred they will look like this.

Next, just slide the first end piece out from behind and your loops will now be placed on the second end piece all ready to knit the next row. Your working yarn will always be to the left of the pegs.

Just keep repeating this method to knit your scarf as long as you want.

OPTIONAL TRANSFER METHOD

Now if you are really brave, this is an easier and faster way to transfer your loops!

Take your second end piece and position your empty pegs under the looped pegs. I sort of wiggle the empty pegs back and forth a bit to make sure they are in the loops. Now, here is the scary part...

In one fluid motion tilt the end piece with the loops up so that the loops fall onto the empty end piece. Be sure that the pegs that are empty keep touching the other end piece the whole time!

This is so much easier than it sounds and is much faster than transferring the loops one at a time! But, if you are faint of heart or just a scaredy cat, then by all means transfer your loops the way I explain above. Your scarf doesn't care! LOL

I hope you'll give this method a go, as I am sure you'll find that it is much faster than using the knitting board and less stressful. It is also easier on the hands than using knitting needles. What ever way you decide, I hope I've encouraged you to try one of theses scarves. The hardest part will be finding the yarn!
" Have a blessed day!"

Ruffled Scarves using Netted Yarn

I tend to put my projects on Ravelry and then completely forget to blog about them. I've been busy recently knitting some Christmas gifts. After the first of the year I'll blog about what I made and show some photos.

I recently saw this video from Isela showing a ruffled scarf she had made using a knitting board. I thought it was beautiful and had never seen or heard of this net type of yarn. She used Katia Triana which usually sells for about $12 per skein. The first thing I did was scour the internet searching for these types of yarns. These are the brands I found and the prices they usually sell for.

Sundance Frill - $4
Premier Starbella - $6
Red Heart Sashay - $7
Hobby Lobby Chrysalis - $7
Bernat Twist and Twirl - $7
Patons Pirouette - $8
Katia Triana - $12
Knitting Fever Flounce - $12
Rozetti Marina - $12
Rozetti Marina Glitz - $17
Frill Seeker - $15

These skeins normally have about 33 yards which doesn't sound like much, but is plenty to make a 60" or longer scarf. The Red Heart Sashay, Bernat Twist and Twirl and Patons Pirouette you may be able to find locally at Hobby Lobby, Michaels or AC Moore. Hobby Lobby has their own brand called Chrysalis. My Michaels carried none of these and Hobby Lobby said they sold out of their brand as soon as it came in. The one day I was there they only had a butt ugly green color. LOL

Every place online that sold this type of yarn either only had awful colors left or they were back ordered and out of stock until the end of this year or February 2012!

I finally lucked up and found some on ebay!

So, while waiting on my yarn to arrive I tried one with some Lion Brand Ruffles yarn that I had purchased a year or more ago and it came out nice too, although different from the net type yarns. It has since been discontinued. I mixed the white and tweed every other row as I wasn't sure I'd have enough.

It came out 60" and used a whole skein of the white and one of the tweed.

I've been using size 10.5 DPN's to knit mine and have been CO only 6 or 7 stitches which is plenty. However, after about the 3rd scarf my left hand was very sore from the way I had to hold the needles to keep the stitches from slipping off. Which by the way is very easy to do. I crochet too but found it was just too hard to make these that way and I preferred the needles to using the knitting board as well. I just thought there had to be an easier way. Well, there is!!!

I remembered my end pieces that came with my adjustable knitting board. They have 8 pegs and work wonderfully! Using them is so fast and you don't have to worry about losing your stitches or your hands hurting. So, you say why not just use the knitting board like Isela shows in the video? I did try that way, but found it too fiddly and aggravating having to keep the work pushed down in the middle of the board. Plus having to put the loops from the yarn on the back side of the pegs, transferring all loops to the other side of the board after each row and continually turning the knitting board. For me just entirely too frustrating. So, in my next post I'll try to explain using the end pieces and show lots of photos as well. For me this way is so much easier and you may find that true too.

So, until then try to find some of this new type yarn and watch some videos on youtube showing how to use this yarn.

" Have a blessed day!"

A sweater set for Arden...

I changed mine up a bit

and then used a different pattern for the hat. The hat pattern is called Varigated Hat and I love the texture.

It was also easy to follow. Retangly Hat!

I have been lacking in keeping up with this blog, but that doesn't mean I haven't been super busy! I knit, crochet and scrapbook and it seems that I don't have enough time to get to all the projects that I want to complete let alone start. Anyhow, I'd been dabbling in double knit and was intrigued with how you could knit a tube on 2 straight needles with NO purling!

So, I finally decided to take on a REAL project and this is it! The pattern is by Catherine Hughes and is called "Rectangly Hat". It was a lot easier than I expected it to be and that was due in large part to the excellent way in which Catherine set up the chart. This was by far the easiest chart I have ever followed! Also, a big "Thanks" to Catherine for sharing the pattern for FREE.

I knit this for my son Justin as he lives in NY and this will be his second winter there. I love how 100% wool keeps the wind out and repels the rain, so he should get lots of use from this hat. My husband is modeling it here and you can see that it's really 2 hats in one as it's totally reversible.

I'm already planning my next double knit hat and am going to try and chart a design myself. I had so much fun following this pattern and also the fact that it fits so perfectly that I asked Catherine if she could share where she got her blank chart for her design? She graciously shared it with me and I can't wait to get started. More on that later. Anyway, why don't you give double knitting a go?

When I went to upload my photos for this project to Flickr I was surprised that this was my first knitted FO for 2010! Are you kidding? It's June and I am just now finishing a knitting project? Wow! I have been doing some crochet and I have been busy crafting more with my Cricut these days, but I didn't realize that I hadn't been knitting.

I made this for one of my husbands employees who is having a girl in August. They are giving her a baby shower mid June, so I knew I needed to knit fast. I forgot how much fun these little BSJ's (Baby Surprise Jacket) were to knit. I did add a 2x2 ribbing to the sleeves and added a crochet picot edge around the front and lower back edge, neckline and sleeves. I also used an applied i-cord bind off. Another thing I did was to knit an eyelet row and then run an i-cord through it. It turned out very nice.

I can now share the secret project that I was working on the end of April. I crocheted this photo of my daughter Jennifer and her soon to be husband Sean. I made this as a wedding gift to the both of them and gave it to my daughter at her bridal shower this past Saturday.

It took me 2 weeks to complete it from start to finish. It ended up being 32" by 32" and had 107 stitches per row and had 125 rows total. The pattern was 25 pages long with 3 columns of instructions on each page.

This was a CBN (Crochet by Numbers) pattern designed by Todd Paschall. You send him a photo and he turns it into a pattern for you for a $30 donation. Here is his website...

http://www.crochetbynumbers.com/

He also has a group on Ravelry and you can find that here...

http://www.ravelry.com/groups/crochet-by-numbers

This was my first CBN pattern and although it's a lot of work to make one of these, it is very rewarding as the result is awesome!

I am having such a great time using my MTC (Make the Cut) and my Cricut for cutting and designing Word Books and these Explosion Boxes. This one is for a couple in our SS class as their Wedding Anniversary is this coming Sunday. The husband invited our entire class to a surprise lunch after church. He wants to surprise his wife. He said no gifts, but we can bring cards, so this is my version of a card. LOL I feel pretty safe that she won't see this, as I don't think she even knows about my blog and she isn't on FB.

I designed these to be cut with MTC so you don't have to cut out the box by hand. You can find all of those files here: EBox Files You'll notice that I turned each layer just enough so that it still fits on the underneath layer. I thought this made for a prettier open look. I decorated some, but also left places for the recipient to decorate! The flower petals I took from another box I am working on but haven't finished yet.

I also added a puzzle! I found that svg here on the web. I first cut the puzzle, then I left it on the mat, changed my blade for a cricut marker before I cut it again. I left the puzzle piece on my mat and made it not visible so it wouldn't cut. Then I dragged the dove picture on top and sized it the size of the puzzle then I re-cut. This drew the dove picture right on top of the puzzle. I colored it while still on the mat, then carefully removed all of the between tid bits before removing them from the mat. I then put them in a pocket on one of the box flaps. I printed out a small pic of the completed puzzle for the recipient so they know what they are putting together...LOL

I also added tiny white flowers to the center which are glued to long thin pieces of plastic so they float around in the middle. I just cut thin strips of clear plastic which I save from the backs of clear stamps, deco parts and other scrap book supplies that have that clear backing to hold the parts. Bend the other end slightly and glue to the bottom underneath the edge somewhere. They are really neat because they bounce around when the box moves.

I hope this inspires you to create your own explosion box!

I took a week right after Christmas to re-arrange, re-organize and just generally clean up my crafting room. I used things that I already had, so I didn't have to spend any money which is always good. It still needs a bit of tweaking, aka cleaning out the drawers and tossing stuff I don't need, but overall I am very pleased with how it turned out. It was worth all of the time and effort it took as now I can spread out while I scrapbook and make cards.

I know I'll use my Cricut more now that it's easily accessible and I don't have to drag it out when I need to use it or drag out the cartridges because I have the Gypsy. I also purchased a netbook recently so that I can use the MTC (Make the Cut) software program to cut anything I desire with my Cricut. No more buying cartridges!

Here is a short video clip of my room...now to make something cool!

If you own a Cricut and you are tired of purchasing cartrides, then you need the MTC (Make the Cut) program! I purchased mine last week and am very happy with it.
You can choose for them to say

Handmade for you by

Crocheted for you by

Knitted for you by

Merry Christmas from

Each set has pre-printed lines at each end to help you when you cut them so that each is perfectly sized. You just print, cut and wrap! A small piece of scotch tape holds it together. If you sell your dishcloths, you’ll also want to slip a business card in the back of each one.

You’ll receive the PDF set by email and may print them out on any paper you choose and as many times as you need. These make any dishcloth gift so much nicer and if you sell your dishcloths online these will make them stand out from the rest. Or just wrap your dishcloths for gifts to friends and family.

You can wrap them individually or fold the dishcloths in sets of 2 or 3 and then wrap them with the wrappers.

These make a nice dishcloth gift... even nicer!

Just choose your option below and once I receive your order I should have your Personalized PDF's to you within 48 hours or less. If you don't receive them please check your SPAM folder and please let me know if you don't receive your file in the allotted time frame.

You can purchase any of my other dishcloth wrapper sets HERE!
My Art Fire Shop

PHOTOS OF SETS BELOW

I will personalize them with your name (or business name). You can choose for them to say

Handmade for you by

Crocheted for you by

Hand Knit for you by

Knitted for you by

These make a dishcloth gift even nicer!

Just choose your option below and once I receive your order I should have your PDF's to you within 48 hours or less. If you don't receive them please check your SPAM folder and please let me know if you don't receive your file in the allotted time frame.

This is my newest knitting design. I call it Cowl-A-Bunga because it has HUGE stitches and has an over sized look. This look is all the rage for fall. It can be worn as a scrunchy cowl, hooded cowl to keep your ears toasty or as a off the shoulder capelet.

It is knit big for lots of warmth and knits up quickly. It can be started one evening and finished the next!

It is lightweight and very versatile. It has 3 button holes on one end and on the other 3 closure ruffles and 2 mega i-cords with wooden beads on the ends. You can wear it many different ways and I have shown just a few here.

Modeled by my beautiful niece Alexis!

$6.99

Am I sewing?

It has been FOREVER since I have sewed anything! However, today I pulled out my serger and sewing machine to make the staff in Dr. Sharmas office some Christmas surgeons caps. I found the pattern at Hancock Fabrics when they were on sale for 99 cents which today is a steal! Patterns have went WAY up in price since I last sewed anything.

I did have to adjust the pattern somewhat to how I wanted them to look. I took a sample cap from the doctor's office to go by. I think they came out pretty good and I'm surprised I remembered how to use my sewing machine and serger!

Here is the one I made for Dr. Sharma. I ironed on this cute Taz patch to the front and I'm sure he'll get a kick out that. The other 3 are for the 2 guys and 1 gal that assist him while doing surgeries.
