Religion class&lt;/a&gt; my freshman year of college.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;img style=&quot;display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto&quot; src=&quot;http://seminary.lds.org/content/images/manuals/bm-trm/009.gif&quot;&gt; &lt;p&gt;(&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Note:&lt;/strong&gt; I don’t have much to say about this paper today… maybe because it’s pretty straight forward, and maybe because I have strep. Probably the latter.&lt;/em&gt;) &lt;p&gt;Isaiah’s main prophecies were concerning the first and second comings of Christ. Nephi loved the words of Isaiah, and because he did he wrote about them even when he was not directly quoting them. One of the most important points of Nephi’s discourse on Isaiah is the plan of salvation which he outlines in this discussion. How does Nephi describe the plan of salvation and what things does he emphasize? Nephi speaks almost entirely of Christ’s atonement and enduring to the end, two vital points of the plan of happiness. &lt;p&gt;Nephi testifies of the awesome power of the atonement as he describes it as “infinite for all man.” (2 Nephi 25:16) The plan of happiness hangs on the atonement. There can be neither salvation nor eternal life without the amazing sacrifice of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. For “there is none other name given under heaven save it be this Jesus Christ… whereby man can be saved.” (2 Nephi 25:20) The salvation that Nephi speaks about is the first condition of the atonement. By Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection all men are saved from the bonds of physical death which “he hath given… free for all men.” (2 Nephi 26:27) &lt;p&gt;However, Nephi continues and speaks of the second kind of salvation made possible by the atonement. This salvation is dependant upon man’s individual conversion and devotion. Nephi states this as his reason for speaking and teaching so much of Christ so that “our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.”( 2 Nephi 25:26) Jesus Christ’s atoning sacrifice redeems men from spiritual death on the condition of their belief and steadfastness. Christ’s grace will save man “after all [they] can do.” (2 Nephi 25:23) Man must believe in Christ and be reconciled to God. In order to help man become this reconciled being, Christ gave man His spirit to stay on earth after His ascension into heaven. This spirit is to aid in man’s conversion, allowing him to be saved by the grace of God. However, “the Spirit of the Lord will not always strive with man.” (2 Nephi 26:11) Nephi reminds man that the companionship of the Holy Spirit is also conditional upon man’s worthiness. &lt;p&gt;Nephi’s discourse on the first coming of Christ teach man “line upon line” and “precept upon precept” of the sacrifice of the Lord that makes the plan of salvation possible. Christ’s “infinite atonement” and the gift of the Holy Spirit which He left for man after his ascension are those tools and keys that the Lord has given to man for him to be saved, according to his steadfastness and faith.  &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;What does the plan of salvation mean to you?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;  </content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/feeds/6810450738915088505/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/06/plan-of-salvation.html#comment-form' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/6810450738915088505'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/6810450738915088505'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/06/plan-of-salvation.html' title='The Plan of Salvation'/><author><name>Becca</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/01667724269493668949</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='https://img1.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-74864394654073513.post-2936132951599249039</id><published>2012-06-13T08:09:00.001-06:00</published><updated>2012-06-13T09:33:11.142-06:00</updated><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Book of Mormon Papers"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Isaiah"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Jesus Christ"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Old Testament"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="prophecy"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Second Coming"/><title type='text'>Christ’s Millennial Reign</title><content type='html'>&lt;p align=&quot;center&quot;&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/search/label/book%20of%20mormon%20papers&quot;&gt;Book of Mormon Papers&lt;/a&gt; - &lt;/b&gt;a series of posts&lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;containing papers I wrote for a&lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://religion.byu.edu/&quot;&gt;BYU Religion class&lt;/a&gt; my freshman year of college.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://lh3.ggpht.com/-5C0nd_3TXT4/T9iyszJfqBI/AAAAAAAAS5Q/wncWT17e_zQ/s1600-h/Winslow-Lion-Lamb%25255B3%25255D.jpg&quot;&gt;&lt;img style=&quot;background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px&quot; title=&quot;Winslow-Lion-Lamb&quot; border=&quot;0&quot; alt=&quot;Winslow-Lion-Lamb&quot; src=&quot;http://lh3.ggpht.com/-g3qr64S6tZs/T9iyts6YZVI/AAAAAAAAS5Y/A4kAtwNWS2c/Winslow-Lion-Lamb_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800&quot; width=&quot;397&quot; height=&quot;310&quot;&gt;&lt;/a&gt;(&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Note:&lt;/strong&gt; It’s ironic that I just &lt;/em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/06/isaiah-on-my-mind.html&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;&lt;em&gt;wrote about how Isaiah has been on my mind&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;em&gt; – since I’ve been trying to slog through Isaiah in the &lt;/em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://mormon.org/free-book-of-mormon/&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;&lt;em&gt;Book of Mormon&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;em&gt; – and then here I come to post the next Book of Mormon paper and it’s about Isaiah. Maybe I need to pull out my Old Testament seminary manual or institute manual and have it by my bedside so I can get something out of Isaiah this time around. I actually &lt;strong&gt;love&lt;/strong&gt; Isaiah, but I don’t always understand it without having to do &lt;strong&gt;tons&lt;/strong&gt; of research, which is time consuming, and I read my Book of Mormon right before bed which doesn’t leave time for a lot of research. I usually read a page or two and write my thoughts in the margins. My scripture &lt;strong&gt;study&lt;/strong&gt; usually comes during the day, and that’s when I do some major researching. But I keep feeling bugged to study Isaiah, so I think I’m going to have to start sooner rather than later… I’ve been putting it off so that I can finish my study of the &lt;/em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/search/label/The%20Character%20of%20Christ&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;&lt;em&gt;Character of Christ&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;em&gt; in the gospels, so either I need to hurry up and finish my study of the gospels, or I need to postpone that and jump head first into Isaiah… &lt;/em&gt;)  &lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;p&gt;The words of Isaiah are valuable sources of plain and precious truths of the gospel. When Nephi quoted Isaiah he included many prophesies of Christ’s first and second comings. What are some of the important things that Isaiah prophesied concerning the coming of Christ and what do these things mean? Isaiah prophesied of the destruction that would come to the wicked and the saving of the righteous and the peace that would come from Christ’s reign.  &lt;p&gt;The fate of the wicked, or those members of the great and abominable church, has been compared by prophets to several tragic historical incidences. Isaiah relates the destruction of Assyria as a type for the destruction of the wicked during the second coming. Isaiah prophesied that the Lord would “punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.”(2 Nephi 20:12) Assyria was destroyed because of the worldliness of its people, and so shall the members of the great and abominable church be destroyed at the second coming of Christ.  &lt;p&gt;When Isaiah prophesied of Christ’s birth he prophesied that Christ should be called “Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.” (2 Nephi 19:12) The peace that will come from the Savior is everlasting and will dwell upon those who are righteous at the day of his coming. The Lord said “O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid…” (2 Nephi 20:24) The Lord will destroy those who contend against His people, and he will leave them with an everlasting peace. The state of the earth during the reign of Christ will be peaceful and righteous when “the wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the young lion and fatling together and a little child shall lead them.” (2 Nephi 21:6)  &lt;p&gt;Innocence, peace, and righteousness will characterize the world while Christ reigns, and those who are righteous at His coming will be spared to live at that time, while the wicked will be destroyed according to the prophesies of Isaiah and the word of the Lord.  &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;What do the prophecies of Isaiah mean to you? How do you “liken” Isaiah to yourself?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  </content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/feeds/2936132951599249039/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/06/christs-millennial-reign.html#comment-form' title='2 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/2936132951599249039'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/2936132951599249039'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/06/christs-millennial-reign.html' title='Christ’s Millennial Reign'/><author><name>Becca</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/01667724269493668949</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='https://img1.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media="http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/" url="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-g3qr64S6tZs/T9iyts6YZVI/AAAAAAAAS5Y/A4kAtwNWS2c/s72-c/Winslow-Lion-Lamb_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="72" width="72"/><thr:total>2</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-74864394654073513.post-3917170962064585788</id><published>2012-05-23T20:00:00.000-06:00</published><updated>2012-05-23T20:00:03.395-06:00</updated><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Book of Mormon Papers"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="inspiration"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Isaiah"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Jesus Christ"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="scripture study"/><title type='text'>To Understand With Your Heart</title><content type='html'>&lt;p align=&quot;center&quot;&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/search/label/book%20of%20mormon%20papers&quot;&gt;Book of Mormon Papers&lt;/a&gt; - &lt;/b&gt;a series of posts&lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;containing papers I wrote for a&lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://religion.byu.edu/&quot;&gt;BYU Religion class&lt;/a&gt; my freshman year of college.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;(&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;Note&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;:&lt;em&gt; I enjoyed re-reading this post because it reminded me that I need to study the words of Isaiah more! It’s interesting how many people talk about how hard it is to understand Isaiah. His words really are plain and precious. The symbolism is sometimes hard to understand, but only if you aren’t familiar with symbols. I had great teachers (both religious teachers and secular teachers) who really helped me to understand symbolism. One of my favorite classes in high school was Art History, and we learned a lot about symbolism in that class.&lt;/em&gt;)&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;In the Book of Mormon, the prophets quote Isaiah several times and often will give their own interpretation of Isaiah’s prophecies.&amp;nbsp; Nephi is not only no exception, but he alone quoted Isaiah more often than any other writer in the Book of Mormon.&amp;nbsp; Nephi explained himself several times, often stating how he read Isaiah to “more fully persuade them to believe in the Lord their Redeemer,” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/19.23?lang=eng#22&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 19:23&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; or for the “proving unto [his] people that save Christ should come all men must perish.”&amp;nbsp; The words of Isaiah are often hard to comprehend and can cause frustration instead of enlightenment.&amp;nbsp; How, then, is one supposed to read the words of Isaiah so that he may believe more fully in Christ?&amp;nbsp; Isaiah himself states that man must “understand with their hearts” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/16.10?lang=eng#9&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;2 Nephi 16:10&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; in order to understand and be converted.&amp;nbsp; After one has begun to understand with his heart, the treasures of Isaiah may be enjoyed and stored up in burning testimony.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;In a vision described by Isaiah, he is called to testify and prophesy of Christ.&amp;nbsp; After overcoming feelings of self doubt, removed by the atonement of Christ, Isaiah offers himself as a witness.&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt; (&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/16.5-8?lang=eng#4&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;2 Nephi 16:5-8&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt;&amp;nbsp; However, Isaiah was informed that, although men would hear his words, they would misunderstand and perceive not.&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt; (&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/16.9?lang=eng#8&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;2 Nephi 16:9&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt;&amp;nbsp; The things of Isaiah are simple and plain truths of the gospel; they are words which, if received in the correct spirit and mind, can enlighten and enlarge the soul.&amp;nbsp; Man is continuously instructed throughout the scriptures to experiment on the word and plant the words in their heart with faith. &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/32?lang=eng&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;Alma 32&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt;&amp;nbsp; If one will but follow that counsel, the plain and precious truths contained in Isaiah will begin to change the lives of those they touch.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Isaiah was called as a special witness of Christ.&amp;nbsp; Words which testify of Christ are important to one’s own understanding of the Redeemer, and there is no better way to come to know the character of Christ than to read of Him through the prophesies and witnesses of those called to testify of Him.&amp;nbsp; The words of Isaiah may be hard to understand, but if approached in the correct spirit and mind, within Isaiah’s words may be found plain and precious truths that will strengthen and enlarge the testimonies of those who read them.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;How do you approach the words of Isaiah?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  </content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/feeds/3917170962064585788/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/05/to-understand-with-your-heart.html#comment-form' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/3917170962064585788'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/3917170962064585788'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/05/to-understand-with-your-heart.html' title='To Understand With Your Heart'/><author><name>Becca</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/01667724269493668949</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='https://img1.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-74864394654073513.post-3730404180027176446</id><published>2012-04-23T09:03:00.001-06:00</published><updated>2012-04-23T09:03:16.716-06:00</updated><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Book of Mormon Papers"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="character"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="faith"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="life"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="spirit"/><title type='text'>Spiritually Minded</title><content type='html'>&lt;p align=&quot;center&quot;&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/search/label/book%20of%20mormon%20papers&quot;&gt;Book of Mormon Papers&lt;/a&gt; - &lt;/b&gt;a series of posts&lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;containing papers I wrote for a&lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://religion.byu.edu/&quot;&gt;BYU Religion class&lt;/a&gt; my freshman year of college.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;(&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Note:&lt;/strong&gt; This paper reminded me of the first time &lt;/em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://mormon.org/free-book-of-mormon/&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;&lt;em&gt;I used an economy Book of Mormon for my daily reading of the Book of Mormon&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;em&gt;. I kept a little slip of paper as my book mark, and I kept a list of principles and words that were used to describe “eternal life”. I had a great little list, but I don’t know where it went, which is really sad. I guess I will just have to go through the &lt;/em&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://mormon.org/free-book-of-mormon/&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;&lt;em&gt;Book of Mormon&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;em&gt; looking for eternal life again.&lt;/em&gt;) &lt;p&gt;Before Nephi died, he instructed Jacob to carry on the tradition of scripture writing, and instructed him to write the words of Isaiah for the benefit of the Nephites. Jacob proceeded to write the words of Isaiah and instruct the people how to live the words of Isaiah. In teaching the Nephites how to live righteously, Jacob admonished them that “to be spiritually minded is life eternal.”&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt; (&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/9.39?lang=eng#38&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;2 Nephi 9:39&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; What does it mean to be “spiritually minded?” Being spiritually minded is about learning and living of God. Man is spiritually minded when he puts off the natural man and when he comes to know God and Jesus Christ. &lt;p&gt;Jacob stated that life eternal is to be spiritually minded. Christ also described life eternal in His great intercessory prayer. He stated “and this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/nt/john/17.3?lang=eng#2&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;John 17:3&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; Therefore to be spiritually minded is to come to know God and Jesus Christ. The first step in this process is to have faith in Jesus Christ.&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt; (&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/pgp/a-of-f/1.4?lang=eng#3&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;AoF 1:4&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; Alma taught that “if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/32.21?lang=eng#20&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;Alma 32:21&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; In the writings of Isaiah quoted by Jacob, Isaiah prophesied that the children of Israel who would “wait for [Christ]” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/6.7?lang=eng#6&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;2 Nephi 6:7&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; would not be ashamed and would know that He is the Lord. Waiting and hoping are synonymous; therefore to have faith is to grow closer to a knowledge of the character of God and Christ. &lt;p&gt;In coming to know the character of God and the Savior, one must also live according to that knowledge. As Jacob admonished the Nephites to live righteously, he asked them “Would I harrow up your souls if your minds were pure?” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/9.47?lang=eng#46&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;2 Nephi 9:47&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; Jacob taught that those who are righteous love the words of truth. &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/9.40?lang=eng#39&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;2 Nephi 9:40&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; Because the way of the Lord is righteousness, those who are righteous will love the Lord, because all truth is of Him. Jacob directed the people of Nephi “do not spend money for that which is of no worth, nor your labor for that which cannot satisfy.” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/9.31?lang=eng#30&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;2 Nephi 9:31&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; Jacob was teaching the people to seek for that which is eternal, or life eternal. He was advising them to become spiritually minded by working for “treasures in heaven” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/nt/matt/6.20?lang=eng#19&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;Matthew 6:20&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; and spending their time and efforts on things of eternal significance. Jacob counseled them to “wait for Christ” and believe in Him, feasting on the words of Christ. The words of Christ are eternal and constant, and feasting upon them is one of the most profitable ways to learn of His character. &lt;p&gt;Learning to live righteously by feasting on the words of Christ and following His commandments allow mankind to grow closer to God and Christ and allow them to come to know the character of God. Hoping for and living for Christ will bring a man closer to Him and will aid in the purpose of becoming spiritually minded. Then, man may attain “life eternal,” or exaltation to know God and Jesus Christ for eternity, for being spiritually minded is life eternal. &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;What does it mean to you to be “spiritually minded”?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  </content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/feeds/3730404180027176446/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/04/spiritually-minded.html#comment-form' title='1 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/3730404180027176446'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/3730404180027176446'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/04/spiritually-minded.html' title='Spiritually Minded'/><author><name>Becca</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/01667724269493668949</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='https://img1.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>1</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-74864394654073513.post-72928514621426848</id><published>2012-04-12T08:00:00.000-06:00</published><updated>2012-04-12T08:00:05.745-06:00</updated><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Book of Mormon Papers"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="scriptures"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="the Book of Mormon"/><title type='text'>Delight in the Scriptures</title><content type='html'>&lt;div align=&quot;center&quot;&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/search/label/book%20of%20mormon%20papers&quot;&gt;Book of Mormon Papers&lt;/a&gt; - &lt;/b&gt;a series of posts&lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;containing papers I wrote for a&lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://religion.byu.edu/&quot;&gt;BYU Religion class&lt;/a&gt; my freshman year of college.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;p align=&quot;left&quot;&gt;&lt;em&gt;(&lt;strong&gt;Note:&lt;/strong&gt; So this isn’t one of my best papers, but I was not surprised to find that I chose to write about delighting in the scriptures. In &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/4?lang=eng&quot;&gt;Chapter 4&lt;/a&gt;, Nephi recorded the reason for him including many scriptures, especially the writings of Isaiah, in his record. Nephi’s reason is that his soul “delighteth in the scriptures.” Earlier Nephi had stated that on the plates he would write “the things of [his] soul.” From these two statements, one can conclude that Nephi had made the scriptures, even the writings and the words of the prophets, a part of his soul. What does it mean to make the words of God “things of [one’s] soul?” Nephi gave a reasonable outline when he stated that “my heart pondereth them, and writeth them for the learning and the profit of my children.” In order to make the word of God a thing of one’s soul, one must delight in the scriptures, ponder them, and wish to teach the words to others. (&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/4.15-16?lang=eng#14&quot;&gt;2 Nephi 4:15-16&lt;/a&gt;)  &lt;p&gt;Nephi’s delight of the scriptures comes from a more general feeling that his “soul delighteth in the things of the Lord…” As the scriptures come from the Lord, it would follow that Nephi would also delight in them. The dictionary describes delight as “to take great pleasure or joy.” Nephi must have understood the doctrine that men are on this earth to have joy. (&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/2.25?lang=eng#24&quot;&gt;2 Nephi 2:25&lt;/a&gt;) Nephi also understood what things bring men joy on this earth.  &lt;p&gt;It is obvious from Nephi’s writings that he pondered the scriptures often. Many of his writings quote Isaiah and expound on Isaiah’s writings. The dictionary defines ponder as “To reflect or consider with thoroughness and care.” Surely in all Nephi’s writings and also through his actions which were consistent with the teachings of the prophets, it is made clear that Nephi pondered the words of God in great depth.  &lt;p&gt;Before Nephi quoted the words of Isaiah for the first time, he stated, “that I might more fully persuade them to believe in the Lord their Redeemer I did … liken all scriptures unto us that it might be for our profit and learning.” (&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/19.23?lang=eng#22&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 19:23&lt;/a&gt;) Nephi showed great care and concern for his family, and he showed this by teaching them of the words of the Lord. Countless times did Nephi rehearse the scriptures to his brethren, showing them the examples of their fathers and praying that his brothers would do likewise.  &lt;p&gt;Nephi showed that he loved the words of God by delighting in the scriptures, pondering them, and sharing them with his family and others. Because Nephi understood the importance of the scriptures, he was able to internalize them and make them “things of [his] soul.”&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;Have you made the scriptures a part of your soul? Do you delight in scripture? Do you ponder them? Do you read them, study them, and teach them to your family members and others around you?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  </content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/feeds/72928514621426848/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/04/delight-in-scriptures.html#comment-form' title='1 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/72928514621426848'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/72928514621426848'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/04/delight-in-scriptures.html' title='Delight in the Scriptures'/><author><name>Becca</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/01667724269493668949</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='https://img1.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>1</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-74864394654073513.post-6542987630461827446</id><published>2012-03-15T08:00:00.000-06:00</published><updated>2012-03-15T08:00:04.790-06:00</updated><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Book of Mormon Papers"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="example"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="fathers"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="God&#39;s law"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="God&#39;s plan"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="man and woman"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="men"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Priesthood"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="righteousness"/><title type='text'>“Be Men”</title><content type='html'>&lt;p align=&quot;center&quot;&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/search/label/book%20of%20mormon%20papers&quot;&gt;Book of Mormon Papers&lt;/a&gt; - &lt;/b&gt;a series of posts&lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;containing papers I wrote for a&lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://religion.byu.edu/&quot;&gt;BYU Religion class&lt;/a&gt; my freshman year of college.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;(&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Note:&lt;/strong&gt; This is one of my favorite papers. Ever since I found out my first son would be a boy I have fretted over how to teach him to be a man. What does it even mean to be a man? Our society has such twisted ideas on what makes a “man” – they don’t usually include being a worthy priesthood holder, serving others, obeying God, and protecting your family. The world is more likely to see a “man” as someone who is “buff”, someone who can “get the ladies” and someone who does whatever he wants to, without regard for anyone else’s needs or feelings. The Lord’s way is not our way (Isaiah 55:9), and is definitely not society’s way. Let’s teach our sons to be men. &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.urbanfaith.com/2011/09/fatherhood-the-%E2%80%98courageous%E2%80%99-way.html/&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;Godly men&lt;/a&gt;.)&lt;/em&gt; &lt;p&gt;Lehi and his family traveled for many years in the wilderness. Near the end of Lehi’s life, he spoke to all of his sons and gave them words of wisdom and admonishment. Lehi spoke to Laman and Lemuel and counseled his sons to be men. What did Lehi mean when he gave his sons this counsel, and how can this counsel be applied to how one lives in today’s world? When Lehi gave this counsel to his sons, he was encouraging them to be strong in the faith and stay true to the gospel of Jesus Christ so that they would be able to receive eternal life and live with their families in glory for eternity. Men and women today can take the same counsel to heart if they desire the blessings promised to those who become men or women of Zion.  &lt;p&gt;Lehi was concerned about the spiritual welfare of his sons, which is seen throughout his life as recorded by Nephi. Along with his father, Nephi tried several times to convince his brothers of the truthfulness and necessity of accepting the gospel. Throughout their journeys in the wilderness, Laman and Lemuel rarely showed the qualities of manhood which were desired of them by their father. Lehi showed his great concern for his sons when he instructed them to “arise out of the dust… and by men, and be determined in one mind and in one heart, united in all things, that ye may not come down into captivity.” The dying prophet was trying to get his sons to understand what qualities would make them part of Zion – by being “of one heart and one mind, and [dwelling] in righteousness.”(Moses 7:18) To Lehi, being a man meant possessing and developing the qualities of Zion.  &lt;p&gt;Other fathers also counseled their sons to “be men.”(2 Nephi 1:21) On his deathbed, King David of the Old Testament pleaded with Solomon, “Shew thyself a man.”(1 Kings 2:2) David had the same ideas as Lehi on what would make his son a man. A son could become a man if he would “keep charge of the Lord thy God, to walk his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies.”(1 Kings 2:3) These qualities also can be included in the list of those that build Zion.  &lt;p&gt;Laman and Lemuel were further instructed by their father to “put on the armor of righteousness”(2 Nephi 1:23) to escape the chains of Satan. This instruction is explained more fully in Lehi’s discourse to Jacob, his firstborn in the wilderness. Lehi teaches his family, or rather reminds them, of the plan of salvation and the law of the atonement and the Messiah, whereby men are justified. It is by observing the commandments of Christ that Lehi encouraged his sons to be men, and the commandments of Christ begin with the atonement and salvation through Him.  &lt;p&gt;Lehi desired that his sons become men, just as the Father desires that all of His children become men and women, heirs to celestial thrones. Therefore, mankind must “stand fast in the faith… [and] be strong”(1 Corinthians 16:13) and “be of good courage”(2 Samuel 10:12) and be steadfast in keeping the commandments of the Lord. Mankind must choose to heed the counsel of Lehi and other fathers, including that of the Eternal Father, and be determined, be of Zion, “be men.”&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;How are you teaching your sons to be men, and your daughters to be women? Are we men and women of God? Are we courageous in keeping the commandments – a mark of &lt;/em&gt;true&lt;em&gt; manhood and womanhood?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;If you haven’t seen the movie &lt;em&gt;Courageous,&lt;/em&gt; I can’t recommend it enough! It is an excellent movie, which testifies of the importance of fathers who are godly men, and also testifies of the redeeming power of the Savior’s atonement. Go watch it. You won’t regret it, I promise. It’s even action packed enough to keep your husband’s awake! Here’s the trailer if you need more convincing:&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div style=&quot;padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; width: 448px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; padding-top: 0px&quot; id=&quot;scid:5737277B-5D6D-4f48-ABFC-DD9C333F4C5D:9158d405-7929-4994-9a44-096eb5c5d6a7&quot; class=&quot;wlWriterEditableSmartContent&quot;&gt;&lt;div id=&quot;01011189-af89-464f-8354-e7106ac8b297&quot; style=&quot;margin: 0px; padding: 0px; display: inline;&quot;&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9VT_NBIVfs&quot; target=&quot;_new&quot;&gt;&lt;img src=&quot;http://lh3.ggpht.com/-6z7VvfuNS5g/T2DZeOBOOSI/AAAAAAAASuc/WIOsr1QppPs/video4e638c99ffe0%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800&quot; style=&quot;border-style: none&quot; galleryimg=&quot;no&quot; onload=&quot;var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById(&#39;01011189-af89-464f-8354-e7106ac8b297&#39;); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = &amp;quot;&amp;lt;div&amp;gt;&amp;lt;object width=\&amp;quot;448\&amp;quot; height=\&amp;quot;252\&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;param name=\&amp;quot;movie\&amp;quot; value=\&amp;quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/i9VT_NBIVfs?hl=en&amp;amp;hd=1\&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/param&amp;gt;&amp;lt;embed src=\&amp;quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/i9VT_NBIVfs?hl=en&amp;amp;hd=1\&amp;quot; type=\&amp;quot;application/x-shockwave-flash\&amp;quot; width=\&amp;quot;448\&amp;quot; height=\&amp;quot;252\&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/embed&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/object&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/div&amp;gt;&amp;quot;;&quot; alt=&quot;&quot;&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;  </content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/feeds/6542987630461827446/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/03/be-men.html#comment-form' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/6542987630461827446'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/6542987630461827446'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/03/be-men.html' title='“Be Men”'/><author><name>Becca</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/01667724269493668949</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='https://img1.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-74864394654073513.post-4329742793562014971</id><published>2012-03-02T05:00:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2012-03-02T05:00:01.620-07:00</updated><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Book of Mormon Papers"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Isaiah"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="scripture study"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="spirit"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="teaching"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="testimony"/><title type='text'>Receive the Word</title><content type='html'>&lt;p align=&quot;center&quot;&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/search/label/book%20of%20mormon%20papers&quot;&gt;Book of&amp;nbsp; Mormon Papers&lt;/a&gt; - &lt;/b&gt;a series of posts&lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;containing papers I wrote for a&lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://religion.byu.edu/&quot;&gt;BYU Religion class&lt;/a&gt; my freshman year of college.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;(&lt;strong&gt;Note&lt;/strong&gt;: This isn’t one of my finer papers, but I do love how Nephi had almost all the same revelations that Isaiah had. Nephi knew the words of Isaiah were true because he had the same revelations himself! I love the words of Isaiah and I would love to study them more in depth some time. This year – &lt;a href=&quot;http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/search/label/The%20Character%20of%20Christ&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;the character of Christ&lt;/a&gt;. Next year – &lt;a href=&quot;http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2011/10/power-of-scripture.html&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;standard works in a year&lt;/a&gt;. The next year – words of Isaiah.)&lt;/em&gt; &lt;p&gt;After Nephi read to his brothers from the book of Isaiah, he then proceeded to testify to his brothers about the truthfulness of the words of Isaiah. Nephi received his testimony of those words by way of his vision in which he was shown prophesies that Isaiah talked about. If Nephi was going to tell his brothers about his own personal prophesies why did he wait until after he had read the words of Isaiah to testify to his brothers about his own revelations? Why did he think that the words of Isaiah would be more convincing to his brothers? Nephi used the testimony of Isaiah to back up his own visions and prophecies; however, his brothers were not spiritually prepared to receive Isaiah. If they were so unprepared to understand Isaiah’s teachings, it would have been that much more difficult for them to understand Nephi’s vision.  &lt;p&gt;Nephi read from Isaiah because, as he stated, his purpose was to “persuade [his people] that they would remember the Lord their Redeemer.” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/19.18?lang=eng#17&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 19:18&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;) &lt;/font&gt;Nephi knew the value of the words of Isaiah because he had his father’s testimony compounded with his own personal revelation of the scattering of Israel and the Messiah’s coming. Nephi tried to explain to his brothers how they could receive a testimony of the things that they had read from Isaiah and tried further to explain why he himself had such a testimony of the words of Isaiah when he bore witness that “by the Spirit are all things made known unto the prophets.”&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt; (&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/22.2?lang=eng#1&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 22:2&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;) &lt;/font&gt;Laman and Lemuel demonstrated that they knew what the words were supposed to mean as they asked, “Are they to be understood according to things which are spiritual?” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/22.1?lang=eng&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 22:1&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; Although Laman and Lemuel understood that the writings of Isaiah were of a spiritual matter, they did not have the desire to know the truthfulness of the things that were read to them. They were not spiritually prepared for the testimony of Isaiah and, furthermore, not prepared for the subsequent testimony of Nephi.  &lt;p&gt;Nephi’s own personal testimony must have been strengthened by reading the words of Isaiah. The personal revelation Nephi received was confirmed by the things that he knew of his Redeemer through his study of the words of Isaiah. Although Laman and Lemuel did not understand the teachings of Isaiah they at least understood the spiritual significance of those teachings and therefore were more prepared to understand the spiritual significance of their brother’s testimony, which testimony presented “more than one witness,” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/10.12?lang=eng#11&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;Alma 10:12&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; strengthening both the testimonies of Isaiah and the testimony of Nephi.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;Have you ever shared the scriptures to help give your own testimony more power? How do you understand the words of Isaiah?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  </content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/feeds/4329742793562014971/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/03/receive-word.html#comment-form' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/4329742793562014971'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/4329742793562014971'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/03/receive-word.html' title='Receive the Word'/><author><name>Becca</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/01667724269493668949</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='https://img1.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-74864394654073513.post-822219561077789728</id><published>2012-02-28T05:00:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2012-02-28T05:00:12.295-07:00</updated><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Book of Mormon Papers"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="faith"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="family"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="prophecy"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="testimony"/><title type='text'>A Part in the Prophecies</title><content type='html'>&lt;p align=&quot;center&quot;&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/search/label/book%20of%20mormon%20papers&quot;&gt;Book of&amp;nbsp; Mormon Papers&lt;/a&gt; - &lt;/b&gt;a series of posts&lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;containing papers I wrote for a&lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://religion.byu.edu/&quot;&gt;BYU Religion class&lt;/a&gt; my freshman year of college.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;(&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Note: &lt;/strong&gt;There are several examples in the scriptures of events that happen to prepare a prophecy of the Lord – or commandment – to come forth. Every Christmas I think about Joseph and Mary going to Bethlehem to be counted. I am pretty sure they didn’t &lt;/em&gt;have&lt;em&gt; to go to Bethlehem in person, with Mary so close to delivery. I imagine they could have gone to their Rabbi and let him know Mary was going to have a baby any day now, so they were prefer to be counted by proxy. Like absentee voting. I am certain there wouldn’t be &lt;/em&gt;that&lt;em&gt; big a problem. But Joseph knew who the child was the Mary was carrying, and he also knew that the baby Jesus was supposed to be born in Bethlehem, not Nazareth. We have the opportunity to help bring to pass the prophecies of the Lord. We know what they are (the gospel will be preached to all the earth – so &lt;/em&gt;serve missions!&lt;em&gt;; the constitution of the United States will hang by a very thread and the Elders of the Church will rise up to save it – so &lt;/em&gt;get involved in the government of our nation!&lt;em&gt;) I am sure you can think of several others. I think this is part of the importance of studying the words of Isaiah – not only so we can &lt;/em&gt;know&lt;em&gt; the prophecies of the Lord, but so that we can take part in them. And be on the Lord’s side of the prophecies)&lt;/em&gt; &lt;p&gt;Throughout the entire journey of Lehi’s family in the wilderness, Laman and Lemuel murmured against Nephi and their father. Angels, shocking and other miracles failed to convince Laman and Lemuel of the power of God. When Laman and Lemuel were rebellious and desired to return to Jerusalem, why didn’t the Lord simply let &lt;img style=&quot;display: inline; float: left&quot; align=&quot;left&quot; src=&quot;http://www.lds.org/gospellibrary/artbook/images/ArtBook__070_070__NephiSubduesHisRebelliousBrothers_Sm___.jpg&quot; width=&quot;333&quot; height=&quot;446&quot;&gt;them go back and destroy Laman and Lemuel along with the wicked of Jerusalem? Nephi testifies of the purpose of God saying “thus we see that the commandments of God must be fulfilled.” &lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/17.3?lang=eng#2&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 17:3&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; In addition to strengthening Nephi and his family through afflictions brought on by the two, Laman and Lemuel would play a part in the prophesies that were shown to Nephi concerning the destruction of his seed and the apostasy which would eventually lead to the opening of the dispensation of the fullness of times. &lt;p&gt;The weaknesses in Laman and Lemuel’s testimonies caused Nephi to become a more faithful servant of the Lord. Nephi prayed often on behalf of his brothers and cared about their salvation a great deal. He was constantly reproaching his siblings because of their wickedness and rebelliousness. However, even when his whole family seemed to be murmuring against the Lord, Nephi’s faith was strong enough to withstand that temptation. It could have been difficult for Nephi to continue in the ways of the Lord when even his father, a great prophet, murmured against the Lord; however, Nephi not only showed his faith in the Lord, but he showed faith in his family when he asked his father “Whither shall I go to obtain food?” &lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/16.23?lang=eng#22&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 16:23&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; Nephi’s faith in the Lord was strengthened because of his family’s weaknesses. Nephi did not have the luxury of his family’s testimony to rely on all the time. His family was weak in their testimony, so Nephi was required to have a stronger testimony of the things he knew were true. &lt;p&gt;Although it may have been easier for Nephi and his family to get through the wilderness without the constant bickering and murmuring of Laman and Lemuel, the Lord needed Laman and Lemuel to play a special part in the plan that would include the apostasy and eventual restoration of the gospel. In &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/12.15?lang=eng#14&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 12:15&lt;/a&gt;, Nephi sees in a vision the seed of Laman and Lemuel coming against his seed to war. This war led to the utter destruction of the righteous and the seed of Laman and Lemuel to be a “dark, and loathsome, and a filthy people, full of idleness and all manner of abominations.” Nephi showed his understanding of the necessity of his afflictions when on the ship Laman and Lemuel bound him with cords. Nephi recorded, “Nevertheless, the Lord did suffer it that he might show forth his power, unto the fulfilling of his word which he had spoken concerning the wicked.” &lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/18.11?lang=eng#10&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 18:11&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; Nephi understood that he was being used as an instrument in the Lord’s hand to bring to pass the judgment of his brothers. &lt;p&gt;Nephi’s blessings were great because of the afflictions brought on his family because of his brothers, and Nephi understood the commandments and prophesies of the Lord wherefore he “did not murmur against the Lord because of [his] afflictions.”&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt; (&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/18.16?lang=eng#15&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 18:16&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; Laman and Lemuel may have made the journey difficult, but the Lord has said “Ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith.”&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt; (&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/ether/12.6?lang=eng#5&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;Ether 12:6&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; It may have been easier for the Lord to let Laman and Lemuel return to Jerusalem and be destroyed or carried into captivity, however the Lord is all knowing and “thus we see that the commandments [and prophesies] of God must be fulfilled.” &lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/17.3?lang=eng#2&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 17:3&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;2&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;Have you ever felt like you were part of a prophecy? I can’t wait to post that paper – it was really long, so I might have to post it in parts. While reading the part where I say Heavenly Father “will give His children many opportunities to accept [the gospel]” I was reminded of something a friend of mine said during a Relief Society lesson. She said that before the judgment day “Each person will be taught the gospel in a way that they perfectly understand what they are accepting or rejecting.” I think that is pretty true, and kind of what I was saying in this paper.)&lt;/em&gt; &lt;p&gt;Nephi received a vision of many prophesies of the latter days. In these prophesies Nephi was shown the loss of many plain and precious parts of the gospel through the formation of a great an abominable church. Nephi was also shown the restoration of the gospel to the earth and the work that would spread the gospel to the world. The Lord also taught Nephi that some of the children of men would not accept the gospel. If the Lord knew who would accept the gospel and who would not, why did He not judge those He knew would not accept the gospel? Not only is the Lord merciful in that He will give His children many opportunities to accept and come unto Him, it is expedient that He should provide a way to test and try the children of men so that He may prove us – whether as followers of Him or followers of the “great and abominable church.” &lt;p&gt;The Lord told Nephi that “because of these things [the plain and precious parts of the gospel] which are taken away out of the gospel of the Lamb, and exceedingly many do stumble…insomuch that Satan hath great power over them.” (&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/13?lang=eng#28&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 13:29&lt;/a&gt;) This may seem like a hopeless situation for those who never receive the plain and precious parts of the gospel. However, the Lord also states that He will be merciful unto the Gentiles and “bring forth unto them, in mine own power, much of my gospel.” (&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/13?lang=eng#33&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 13:34&lt;/a&gt;) The Lord goes on to describe to Nephi the restoration of the gospel. The Lord wants His children to know of His gospel and would not let them perish in ignorance. &lt;p&gt;However, as more knowledge is revealed to the children of men, they have a much more crucial responsibility. The Lord said to Nephi that He would “work a marvelous work among the children of men.” (&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/14?lang=eng#6&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 14:7&lt;/a&gt;) This work is to be “everlasting” – or to be an eternal judgment. The Lord’s purpose in bringing forth the gospel in the latter days is to prove the children of men, either to convince them “unto peace and life eternal” or “unto their bringing brought down into captivity.” (&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/14?lang=eng#6&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 14:7&lt;/a&gt;). “Who’s on the Lord’s side, who? Now is the time to show!” (&lt;a href=&quot;http://library.lds.org/nxt/gateway.dll/Curriculum/music.htm/hymns.htm/special%20topics.htm/260%20whos%20on%20the%20lords%20side.htm#JD_Hymns.260&quot;&gt;Hymn No. 260&lt;/a&gt;) The Lord has revealed His gospel in the latter days to prove the children of men and to separate them into those on His side and those against. The Lord has said that “whoso belongeth not to the church of the Lamb of God belongeth to that great church, which is the mother of abominations.” (&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/14?lang=eng#9&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 14:10&lt;/a&gt;). &lt;p&gt;Although the Lord is merciful and wishes all of His children to return to live with Him again, there stands the eternal truth that “the kingdom of God is not filthy, and there cannot any unclean thing enter into the kingdom of God.” (&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/15?lang=eng#33&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 15:34&lt;/a&gt;) Therefore, the Lord has prepared a way to prove the children of men and judge them according to their hearts by bringing forth the gospel in the latter day, requiring man to choose between “liberty and eternal life…or captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil.” (&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/2?lang=eng#26&quot;&gt;2 Nephi 2:27&lt;/a&gt;) &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;What things do you learn about from the revelations that were given to Nephi? Do you think each child of God will have every opportunity to accept the gospel? What is the great and abominable church? What is the Church of the Lamb of God?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  </content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/feeds/3854042694980774566/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/02/that-he-may-prove-us.html#comment-form' title='1 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/3854042694980774566'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/3854042694980774566'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/02/that-he-may-prove-us.html' title='That He May Prove Us'/><author><name>Becca</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/01667724269493668949</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='https://img1.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>1</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-74864394654073513.post-5717193481166651131</id><published>2012-01-31T05:00:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2012-01-31T05:00:12.406-07:00</updated><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Book of Mormon Papers"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="faith"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="God&#39;s plan"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="humility"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Jesus Christ"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="obedience"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="prayer"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="pride"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="revelation"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="the Book of Mormon"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="the Holy Spirit"/><title type='text'>He That Receiveth Light</title><content type='html'>&lt;p align=&quot;center&quot;&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/search/label/book%20of%20mormon%20papers&quot;&gt;Book of&amp;nbsp; Mormon Papers&lt;/a&gt; - &lt;/b&gt;a series of posts &lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;containing papers I wrote for a &lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://religion.byu.edu/&quot;&gt;BYU Religion class&lt;/a&gt; my freshman year of college.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;(&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Note:&lt;/strong&gt; Re-reading this paper, I can tell this is right after my high school AP English course… on another note, &lt;strong&gt;wow&lt;/strong&gt;! I had forgotten(?) that I knew so much about Nephi’s vision of the interpretation of Lehi’s dream. Also my awareness of Nephi’s humility is good stuff. I think I am a lot more arrogant and prideful than I was when I wrote this paper. Some change is not as good as others… Either way, this is some good stuff! I hope you enjoy it!&lt;/em&gt;)  &lt;p&gt;After Lehi recounted his vision, Nephi desired to know for himself of the revelation given to his father. Nephi’s desire led to a vision of interpretation of his father’s dream. What other knowledge did Nephi receive to interpret his father’s vision, and how did the Lord know that Nephi was ready to receive that knowledge? In addition to an interpretation of Lehi’s vision, Nephi received visions of the “condescension of God.” The life, death, and resurrection of Christ, along with the visitation of Christ to the Americas, were shown to Nephi as part of the interpretation because he followed the instructions of the Spirit and of the angel and acknowledged his lack of the wisdom which he desired.  &lt;p&gt;The Spirit of the Lord caused that Nephi should be “caught away” into a mountain, which is symbolic of a temple. There the Spirit asked Nephi, “What desirest thou?” When Nephi professed his belief in the words of his father and his desire to know the interpretation thereof, the Spirit rejoiced, and then commanded Nephi to “Look!” This is the beginning of a pattern that continues throughout Nephi’s vision. Nephi responded faithfully to the request of the Spirit of the Lord saying “I looked and beheld…” What Nephi beheld is important, however it is very interesting that each time the Spirit or the angel bid Nephi “Look!” he looked without hesitation, opening the opportunities for more revelation.  &lt;p&gt;At first, Nephi only received the vision of the tree, yet to more fully explain the interpretation of the tree of life and the love of God, an angel showed to Nephi the birth of Christ. When asked “Knoweth thou the condescension of God?” (&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/11?lang=eng#15&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 11:16&lt;/a&gt;) Nephi answered truthfully responding that he did not know the meaning of all things. He was humble and teachable and willing to receive the knowledge that the Lord was ready to reveal to him. To reveal the interpretation of the iron rod, the Lord showed Nephi his ministry among men during which Christ gave his word to the world, for Christ is the Word. The large and spacious building which represented the pride of the world was shown to Nephi by revealing the crucifixion of Christ, for Christ was “judged of the world…and slain for the sins of the world.” (&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/11?lang=eng#31&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 11:32-33&lt;/a&gt;)  &lt;p&gt;Further interpretation was given when the Lord revealed the righteousness of the Nephites for the four generations following Christ’s visit to the Americas and the subsequent fall into iniquity to illustrate the mists of darkness as the temptations of the devil. (&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/12?lang=eng#16&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 12:17&lt;/a&gt;) Also revealed was the interpretation of the “great and terrible gulf” which was the “word of justice of the Eternal God.”  &lt;p&gt;The vision given to Nephi revealed to him the life and purpose of Jesus Christ. The plan of salvation, as illustrated by the vision of the tree of life, is centered around Christ. He is the reason there is a plan and He is the plan. Therefore, that each part of the tree of life was explained by a revelation of part of Christ’s life and ministry confirms that the vision of the tree of life is symbolic of the plan of salvation. Nephi demonstrated his readiness to the Lord to learn these sacred things by being eager to learn, by looking when bid to look. Man is taught in this day through similar ways. The Lord bids one to “Look!” and the more one obeys that command, the more revelation that will be added to him.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;What insights do you have about Lehi’s dream? Have you had times in your life when the Spirit has told you to “look” and when you obeyed you were blessed with personal inspiration and revelation?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  </content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/feeds/5717193481166651131/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/01/he-that-receiveth-light.html#comment-form' title='1 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/5717193481166651131'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/5717193481166651131'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/01/he-that-receiveth-light.html' title='He That Receiveth Light'/><author><name>Becca</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/01667724269493668949</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='https://img1.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>1</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-74864394654073513.post-6482970767418675422</id><published>2012-01-24T05:00:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2012-01-24T05:00:00.653-07:00</updated><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="accountability"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Book of Mormon Papers"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="faith"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="gifts of the spirit"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="gospel principles"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="inspiration"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="knowledge"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="prayer"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="prophets"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="seeking the Lord"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="testimony"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="the Holy Spirit"/><title type='text'>A Personal Witness</title><content type='html'>&lt;p align=&quot;center&quot;&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/search/label/book%20of%20mormon%20papers&quot;&gt;Book of&amp;nbsp; Mormon Papers&lt;/a&gt; - &lt;/b&gt;a series of posts &lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;containing papers I wrote for a &lt;br&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://religion.byu.edu/&quot;&gt;BYU Religion class&lt;/a&gt; my freshman year of college.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;(&lt;strong&gt;Note:&lt;/strong&gt; this paper reminds me of the admonition to never take anything the Prophets say at face value – we should always approach Heavenly Father with what we have heard, and ask “diligently” to know “by the power of the Holy Ghost” if the things we have heard are true.&amp;nbsp; A personal testimony is always better than just hearing it from someone else. It reminds me of the &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reading_Rainbow&quot;&gt;Reading Rainbow series&lt;/a&gt; where LeVar says, “But you don’t have to take &lt;/em&gt;my&lt;em&gt; word for it.”)&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;div style=&quot;padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; width: 283px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px&quot; id=&quot;scid:5737277B-5D6D-4f48-ABFC-DD9C333F4C5D:aa15c693-cc19-49ad-b1db-bf9fa3523b11&quot; class=&quot;wlWriterEditableSmartContent&quot;&gt;&lt;div id=&quot;5933f259-e33b-4490-ba80-9ef1795a6829&quot; style=&quot;margin: 0px; padding: 0px; display: inline;&quot;&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9nFs2PeWw0&quot; target=&quot;_new&quot;&gt;&lt;img src=&quot;http://lh6.ggpht.com/-bu0z4Dbybqs/TxWrWm6C0jI/AAAAAAAASic/ABcZmg03MhY/videoff70ba1f624b%25255B9%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800&quot; style=&quot;border-style: none&quot; galleryimg=&quot;no&quot; onload=&quot;var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById(&#39;5933f259-e33b-4490-ba80-9ef1795a6829&#39;); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = &amp;quot;&amp;lt;div&amp;gt;&amp;lt;object width=\&amp;quot;283\&amp;quot; height=\&amp;quot;237\&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;param name=\&amp;quot;movie\&amp;quot; value=\&amp;quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/l9nFs2PeWw0&amp;amp;hl=en\&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/param&amp;gt;&amp;lt;embed src=\&amp;quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/l9nFs2PeWw0&amp;amp;hl=en\&amp;quot; type=\&amp;quot;application/x-shockwave-flash\&amp;quot; width=\&amp;quot;283\&amp;quot; height=\&amp;quot;237\&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/embed&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/object&amp;gt;&amp;lt;\/div&amp;gt;&amp;quot;;&quot; alt=&quot;&quot;&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;p&gt;After hearing of Lehi’s visions and prophecies, Nephi discussed his desire to know for himself of the things that to Lehi were revealed. Lehi told of his vision of the tree of life and later went on to prophesy of the coming of Christ. Why was it so important for Nephi to gain such a personal testimony of the words of his father, and why is there no record of his brothers showing similar faith? Instruction has been given that “by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/moro/10?lang=eng#4&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;Moroni 10:5&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; However, it is given on one condition – “if ye shall ask with real intent, having faith in Christ.” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/moro/10?lang=eng#3&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;Moroni 10:4&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; This is real intent and faith that Laman and Lemuel lacked.  &lt;p&gt;Lehi’s prophecies contained many things that may have seemed foolish to some of his less faithful family members. The prophesy that a Messiah or Savior would come to save the world from sin was difficult to understand. Oftentimes, the words of prophesy are not easy to understand and must be accompanied by a mind that “diligently seeketh” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/10?lang=eng#18&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 10:19&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;).&lt;/font&gt;  &lt;p&gt;In asking the Lord for a personal testimony of Lehi’s visions and prophecies, Nephi also developed greater faith in the power of the Holy Ghost and in the sameness of God. Nephi states that when he asked he knew that God would answer him because God had answered those “in times of old” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/10?lang=eng#16&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 10:17&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; and Nephi knew that God would answer all those after him.  &lt;p&gt;In addition to gaining his own testimony, Nephi’s testimony was part of a “special purpose” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/9?lang=eng#2&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 9:3&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; that the Book of Mormon became in containing “more than one witness” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/10?lang=eng#11&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;Alma 10:12&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt; which has more power than the testimony of one. Nephi would add his personal testimony and revelation to the witnesses of several other prophets who had also testified of the coming of Christ – “how great a number had testified of these things, concerning this Messiah.” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/5?lang=eng#4&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 11:5&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;)&lt;/font&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Laman and Lemuel, as proven in previous experiences, lacked the faith – or even the desire – to gain a personal testimony of any of their father’s or brother’s teachings. They would not manifest even a desire to understand the prophecies of their father until shortly thereafter, after which Nephi chastises them for failing to “look unto the Lord as they ought.” &lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;(&lt;/font&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/14?lang=eng#2&quot;&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 14:3&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;font size=&quot;1&quot;&gt;).&lt;/font&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Nephi’s inquiry of the Lord not only blessed him in his own spirituality, but also blessed all future generations who would read the multiple witnesses of Christ given in the Book of Mormon. Moreover, Nephi’s testimony of the power of the Holy Ghost is assuring. Nephi testifies that all who are desirous to know can receive that knowledge through the awesome power of the Holy Ghost which is “the gift of God.”&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;Why do you think it was so important for Nephi to gain his own witness of the visions his father, the prophet, had seen and heard? Is it just as important for us to receive a personal witness of the words of the prophets? How do you gain that witness? Do you seek diligently, and look unto the Lord for that witness?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  </content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/feeds/6482970767418675422/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/01/personal-witness.html#comment-form' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/6482970767418675422'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/6482970767418675422'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/01/personal-witness.html' title='A Personal Witness'/><author><name>Becca</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/01667724269493668949</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='https://img1.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-74864394654073513.post-6773425686014782892</id><published>2012-01-19T05:00:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2012-01-19T05:00:13.108-07:00</updated><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="adversity"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="agency"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="Book of Mormon Papers"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="family"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="happiness"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="judgment"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="justice"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="progression"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="refinement"/><category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="trials"/><title type='text'>Strength Through Adversity</title><content type='html'>&lt;div style=&quot;text-align: center;&quot;&gt;

&lt;div style=&quot;text-align: center;&quot;&gt;
&lt;i&gt;containing papers I wrote for a&amp;nbsp;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div style=&quot;text-align: center;&quot;&gt;
&lt;i&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://religion.byu.edu/&quot;&gt;BYU Religion class&lt;/a&gt; my freshman year of college.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;i&gt;(&lt;b&gt;Note:&lt;/b&gt; This is the first paper I wrote in my freshman Book of Mormon class at BYU in the fall of 2004. I have learned a lot since I took that class - I have learned a lot about repentance, forgiveness, and trials. I will admit I was - and probably still am - a naive, inexperienced young woman. The things that stand out to me about what I wrote here are Nephi&#39;s &quot;frank forgiveness&quot; of his brethren - &lt;a href=&quot;http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2011/11/charity-never-faileth.html&quot;&gt;charity anyone?&lt;/a&gt; - and the reminder that faith produces miracles, not the other way around. As I was reading this paper, I was a little surprised at the ... finality of my conclusion. It is important to understand that what Alma said about the blood of the innocent crying out in judgement against with wicked is &lt;/i&gt;true&lt;i&gt;&amp;nbsp;- however, in the past year or so, I have become increasingly aware of the fact that God will give us &lt;/i&gt;every opportunity&lt;i&gt;&amp;nbsp;to change - up until judgement day. And if we &lt;/i&gt;do&lt;i&gt;&amp;nbsp;repent and partake in the atonement, we can and will be forgiven of &lt;/i&gt;all&lt;i&gt;&amp;nbsp;of our sins - even the ones that seem very serious.)&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;div class=&quot;MsoNormal&quot; style=&quot;line-height: 150%;&quot;&gt;
&lt;span style=&quot;line-height: 150%;&quot;&gt;While Lehi and his family journeyed in the wilderness, Nephi
was often ridiculed by his older brothers Laman and Lemuel.&amp;nbsp; At one point, his brothers even beat Nephi
and their other brother Sam with rods.&amp;nbsp;
Why when Nephi was so righteous, blessed, and even “chosen” did the Lord
allow his brothers to bind him and beat him at various occasions?&amp;nbsp; Not only did all of his trials help to
strengthen Nephi, but they also allowed his brothers to witness on several
occasions the power of God, making their punishment for sinning against the
Almighty even more serious.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div class=&quot;MsoNormal&quot; style=&quot;line-height: 150%;&quot;&gt;
&lt;span style=&quot;line-height: 150%;&quot;&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; The Lord has
said that “where much is given, much is required.” &lt;span style=&quot;font-size: xx-small;&quot;&gt;(&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/82?lang=eng#2&quot;&gt;D&amp;amp;C 82:3&lt;/a&gt;)&lt;/span&gt;&amp;nbsp; Nephi was blessed, as he himself stated, with
“goodly parents” &lt;span style=&quot;font-size: xx-small;&quot;&gt;(&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/1?lang=eng#1&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 1:1&lt;/a&gt;)&lt;/span&gt; and with many other blessings he describes
throughout the section.&amp;nbsp; Because Nephi
was given so many great blessings, he was required to endure more than others
may be required to endure.&amp;nbsp; Countless times
Nephi records statements from the Lord to himself saying “Blessed art thou,
Nephi” &lt;span style=&quot;font-size: xx-small;&quot;&gt;(&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/2?lang=eng#18&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 2:19&lt;/a&gt;)&lt;/span&gt; and “thou shalt be made a ruler and a teacher over thy
brethren” &lt;span style=&quot;font-size: xx-small;&quot;&gt;(&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/2?lang=eng#21&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 2:22&lt;/a&gt;)&lt;/span&gt;.&amp;nbsp; Nephi was
truly chosen of the Lord who only gave him trial after trial to prove him and
strengthen him.&amp;nbsp; Nephi grew in patience
and in love toward his brothers as he “frankly [forgave] them all that they had
done.” &lt;span style=&quot;font-size: xx-small;&quot;&gt;(&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/7?lang=eng#20&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 7:21&lt;/a&gt;)&lt;/span&gt;.&amp;nbsp; That kind of
frank forgiveness can only come from one who has accepted the challenges of the
Lord and looks at those challenges in a spiritually positive light.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div class=&quot;MsoNormal&quot; style=&quot;line-height: 150%;&quot;&gt;
&lt;span style=&quot;line-height: 150%;&quot;&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Every time
Laman and Lemuel were involved in mocking, abusing, or ridiculing their younger
brother, the power of God was made manifest to them.&amp;nbsp; When Nephi and his brothers returned to
Jerusalem to obtain the plates of brass, Laman and Lemuel beat Nephi and Sam
and stopped only with the appearance of an angel &lt;span style=&quot;font-size: xx-small;&quot;&gt;(&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/3?lang=eng#28&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 3:29&lt;/a&gt;)&lt;/span&gt;.&amp;nbsp; Later when Laman and Lemuel bound Nephi in
the wilderness and left him for dead, by the power of God, Nephi broke the bonds with which he was bound
&lt;span style=&quot;font-size: xx-small;&quot;&gt;(&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/7?lang=eng#16&quot;&gt;1 Nephi 7:17-18&lt;/a&gt;)&lt;/span&gt;.&amp;nbsp; Unfortunately, even
these miracles of God did not convert Nephi’s brethren because they had no
faith.&amp;nbsp; “Miracles do not produce faith...
faith comes by righteousness” &lt;span style=&quot;font-size: xx-small;&quot;&gt;(&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bd/faith?lang=eng&amp;amp;letter=f&quot;&gt;BD Faith&lt;/a&gt;)&lt;/span&gt;.&amp;nbsp;
The Lord said to Nephi, “…inasmuch as they brethren shall rebel against
thee, they shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord.” &lt;span style=&quot;font-size: xx-small;&quot;&gt;(&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/2?lang=eng#20&quot;&gt;1 Nephi2:21&lt;/a&gt;)&lt;/span&gt;.&amp;nbsp; Not only does the Lord allow bad
things to happen to good people for the growth and development of the
righteous, but also so that “the blood of the innocent shall stand as a witness
against [the wicked], yea, and cry mightily against them at the last day” &lt;span style=&quot;font-size: xx-small;&quot;&gt;(&lt;a href=&quot;http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/alma/14?lang=eng#10&quot;&gt;Alma14:11&lt;/a&gt;)&lt;/span&gt;.&amp;nbsp; &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div class=&quot;MsoNormal&quot; style=&quot;line-height: 150%;&quot;&gt;
&lt;span style=&quot;line-height: 150%;&quot;&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; The Lord
allowed Nephi to be bruised and afflicted by his brethren for Nephi’s own
personal growth regarding his brothers and others.&amp;nbsp; Laman and Lemuel’s judgment was also sealed
by their actions toward Nephi and the other righteous members of Lehi’s family.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style=&quot;line-height: 150%;&quot;&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

The first religion class you usually take is Religion 121: Book of Mormon. Religion classes at BYU are usually taught by religion professors. My first Book of Mormon class was actually taught by a Mechanical Engineering professor. &lt;img style=&quot;display: inline; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px&quot; align=&quot;right&quot; src=&quot;http://media.ldscdn.org/images/media-library/scripture-study/scripture-study-462668-gallery.jpg&quot; width=&quot;245&quot; height=&quot;353&quot;&gt;I was part of what BYU called “Freshman Academy” where you have three or four classes with the same group of students. One of those classes was Religion 121, and since we were all engineering students, an engineering professor taught our Book of Mormon class.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Not to minimize the effect of having dedicated religion professors, but my Book of Mormon class with &lt;a href=&quot;http://ratings.byu.edu/?page_id=50&quot;&gt;Brother Jordan Cox&lt;/a&gt; was the best religion class I ever had. We basically had one standing assignment in Bro Cox’s class, and that was to read the assigned chapters in the Book of Mormon, and then write a one page paper in which we asked a question and answered it with the words from the reading assignment. He didn’t care how much we wrote, what size font we used, or the size of the margins – it just had to be one page.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The two midterms and the finals were also papers. One on the words of Isaiah, one of the Church of the Lamb of God, and for our final, we were supposed to write about our testimony.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I still have the copies of almost every paper I wrote for that class, and over the next little while I am going to post those papers on this blog. I am really excited to share these papers with you, and I hope you enjoy them.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Since the Book of Mormon is broken into two semesters of classes at BYU, these papers only cover the first half of the Book of Mormon. My goal this year is to continue the Book of Mormon papers that I wrote that Freshman year and write papers for the second half of the Book of Mormon, the same way.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;I am really looking forward to it!&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;How do you study the Book of Mormon? Did you take a &lt;a href=&quot;http://religion.byu.edu/&quot;&gt;Book of Mormon religion class at a Church-sponsored university&lt;/a&gt;, or a &lt;a href=&quot;http://institute.lds.org/courses/the-book-of-mormon.asp&quot;&gt;Book of Mormon institute class&lt;/a&gt;?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt; </content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/feeds/5827469701293640033/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/01/book-of-mormon-papers.html#comment-form' title='4 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/5827469701293640033'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/74864394654073513/posts/default/5827469701293640033'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://delightinscripture.blogspot.com/2012/01/book-of-mormon-papers.html' title='Book of Mormon Papers'/><author><name>Becca</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/01667724269493668949</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='https://img1.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>4</thr:total></entry></feed>
