Posting 2 days in a row……this could get dangerous, y’all!!
I find so many fabulous things throughout the week just from surfing the net, or Instagram, and I just fall in love and I want to share it with the world! So I thought it would be fun to do a little recap of things I’m loving on Fridays (again….let’s see if I can stick to it). And “Friday’s Favorite 5” was born!
So without further adieu, let’s get this partay started!

I am absolutely loving Hello apparel right now! Their new kids sweatshirts are so darn cute!

I am literally obsessed with EOS lip balm!! Not only is the packaging killer, it actually keeps my lips moisturized! And they come in all different yummy flavors! Love!

Baby moccasins!! Are you kidding me!? I absolutely ADORE these! These bad boys are by Freshly Picked and will set you back 60 bones! But they are so stinkin’ cute! I’m thinking when I go back to work {and can potentially justify these}, I’ll snag a pair for Miss Reese!

How fun are these confetti dot stemless wine glasses!?! These would be so perfect for a Holiday party! I’m pretty sure they come in gold dot too, which would be the ones I buy! These little nuggets, by Threshold at Target, are only $2.99 each! Score!

I saved the best for last, you guys!!! I am absolutely OBSESSED with Bourbon & Boweties! Haven’t heard of it? I’ll let the pictures do the talkin’!

Is that not the best arm party you have ever seen in your life!?! I just love, love, love these bracelets!

Still Alive!

Hi sweet friends!!

Man, it has been a year since I have touched this good 'ole blog of mine! Are you guys still out there?

When I went back to work, I just simply did not have time to blog. A lot has happened since I blogged last.

We'll start with the biggest thing:

Baby Reese was born on August 19th at 9:45am! She is such a sweet angel and we couldn't be more smitten with her! Her big sister Emily has been absolutely amazing!! I never could've imagined that she would be such a great big sister, but she has been just perfect!

I am blogging from an app right now and I have a feeling this will be how I blog most of the time (if I can keep up with it)! It's so hard for me to sit down for 10 minutes at a computer right now. Reese is refusing to take a bottle so I feel like I'm nursing all. the. time!

Life is good, loves! Life is good.

Emily’s Minnie Mouse 2nd Birthday Party

Yes I did just post twice in two days!!!! Holy bananas!!!!!

Well ya’ll know I just couldn’t wait to share with you my sweet baby girl’s 2nd birthday party!!!!

I had so much fun planning this party! Although I have to admit, I was pretty stressed out about the whole thing. That whole “full time job” thing will really put a damper in your party planning ventures!

Anyway, when Em voted for a Minnie Mouse party over pink ruffles & roses, my heart nearly shattered into a million pieces. I mean…..Minnie Mouse is cute and all, but I’m not a huge fan of character parties.

So what’s a girl to do? Well, I started planning a non-character character party! And here’s how it turned out. Are you ready for picture overload!?!?

Like I mentioned in my last post, Lauren from Simply Inspired Mama is amazing and she took all of the gorgeous pictures!

I started by creating an invitation that would set the tone for the party. Still TONS of pink, polka dots, and a little Minnie here & there!

Despite being a little under the weather and having a fever the night before her party, Emily had a BLAST!

And Heaven forbid…..I touched her cupcake!

What a little diva! It literally was just a little itty bitty scoop of frosting!

All in all we had a blast and it was worth all the stressing!

And might I add…..my house still hasn’t recovered from the party! I better get it together before Thanksgiving so I can bring in all the Christmas stuff!!!

Emily’s 2nd Birthday Photo Shoot

Hi sweet friends!!! Long time no talk! I’m still alive!! Waahoooo!

I just got the pictures back from Emily’s 2nd birthday party and got SO EXCITED! Lauren from Simply Inspired Mama was amazing enough to shoot Emily a few weeks before her birthday and also at her birthday party!

Since I just got the party pictures back today (and was beyond stoked), I immediately wanted to do a blog post showing them off!

But then I remembered I never did a post showing her country/woodsy/shabby chic photo shoot she did a few weeks before the party! So let me back track a little and show you the AMAZING pictures Lauren took!

This one is by far my favorite! I used it on Emily’s 2nd birthday party invitations!

Then Lauren gave her a lollipop to keep her “calm” and sitting! And it was pink so it ended up being a super cute prop!

Then we switched from “birthday” mode to just fun/girly/2 year old mode!

And of course we had to try to get some family shots!

It was so much fun shooting with Lauren! She is a blast! If you’re local and looking for a great photographer….give her a shout!

I’m Still Alive

Hi, friends!

Man, LONG time no talk! This is crazy! It has seriously been forever since I have posted. I am so sorry and I miss you guys terribly! I literally just cannot seem to find the time to sit down and blog anymore. That whole “full time job” thing will really put a kink in things!

I’ve been spending my days (and some of my nights) here……

Yup…..my classroom and my job as a second grade teacher has completely taken over my life. I guess I kind of knew that would happen, but man! I had no idea it would consume every minute of everyday until I go to bed at night. I spend about 2 hours with my child at night before she goes to bed and that’s about it.

But….I love it. It’s been an eye opening experience (going back to work after having taken off for 2 years).

I also just got back from an amazing weekend in Palm Coast, Florida. A bunch of my girlfriends from high school & college are all turning 30 this year (myself included), so we decided to take a big trip with our hubbies to celebrate. We left the kiddos at home and had an epic weekend! Here’s a sneak peek from that…..

It was so much fun! And I finally have a little tan! Yesssss!

Hi, friends!! I'm at a technology training today so I thought what a better way to integrate and practice technology than to whip up a blog post! LOL :)

I wanted to share with you my latest obsession. Instagram. Nothing new, but it has really become my most favorite thing within the past several months! I've been on Instagram for ages, but used to never post pictures and would only check in and look at others' pictures maybe once every couple of weeks.

Now, I'm looking on there once every couple of hours!!! I'm obsessed!

So, are you on Instagram? If you are....let's be friends!! I love checking out everyone's photos. It's like Facebook without all the "I'm wiping, then doing laundry, and my dog just sneezed" updates! Man, today was a crazy day! I am starting to feel very behind with work. I had a huge headache all day today, my back has been hurting me pretty bad, and Emily didn’t nap. I’ll be glad when my head hits my pillow tonight!

I wanted to drop in to apologize for my absence and let you know it’s for a good reason! I have been so busy in my classroom! I want to share my classroom journey in a different place from here so I created a new blog for my classroom/teaching stuff. It’s called The Polka Dot Apple!

Countdown To Blissdom, A New Bag, and A Big Move

I am so excited!!! In 15 days I will be hoppin’ on a plane and headed to Nashville to attend my very first blog conference, Blissdom! To say I’m excited is an understatement. I just can’t wait to learn more about this little hobby I’ve created for myself!

To prepare myself for Blissdom, I’ve done lots of searching on Polyvore for the perfect outfits, I ordered some business cards, and I got myself a new bag!

I kind of panicked about the business cards. I procrastinated a bit and was afraid I might not have them in time so I wasn’t able to order the snazzy die cut cards like I had hoped, but that’s ok! I designed my cards and ordered them through Vistaprint.

I also decided that I needed a snazzy new bag! My first thought was to turn to Kellie @ Nest of Posies. But, I was in a bit of a time crunch and a little bit of a $$ crunch. I just couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger and purchase the bag from her (although I am totally about supporting fellow bloggers). I thought maybe I could DIY a tote bag like Lara @ Less Cake More Frosting did and save some money!

So I set off to Hobby Lobby and purchased a cute jute tote. It was the perfect size for carrying my laptop, iPad, blog binder, and pens! I got some paint and fabric medium and had full intentions of DIYing my tote bag!

Then the light bulb went off! I remembered that I had won free monogramming from a local shop here in town! DUH! I could take my bag to them and have them embroider my blog name on the bag. They were able to create EXACTLY what I wanted. I was afraid they might not be able to do the frame around my blog name, but they nailed it! I love it! I got it home and quickly got busy adding some cute felt flowers to it!

I love, love, love it!!! I have it hanging on our entry shelf and I just smile every time I walk by it!

In other news, I am making a big move. I am in the process of moving my blog over to Wordpress. Crazy, I know! Even crazier….I’m attempting to do the move ALL BY MYSELF. So far I am about to pull my hair out (Thank you, Maryann for putting up with my 50 million questions)!!! It’s not as easy as all the tutorials I read make it seem! Haha. But, I’m going to stick with it and figure it out because I think it will be better in the long run for me and for my blog.

As you guys have probably heard, Google Friends Connect is going bye-bye on all non-blogger blogs. Which means, when I’m all done with the switch, GFC will pretty much be obsolete. I might get a week or so where it’s still active on my Wordpress site. I will continue to keep you updated on ways you can follow my blog when I’m all done switching it over.

In the meantime, if things look wonky….don’t think too much of it. Hopefully I’ll have it all fixed soon! If you notice that links aren’t working properly, please do me a favor and send me an email and let me know. That’s the part I’m struggling with most…..getting all the links to transfer, etc.

I really appreciate you guys sticking with me. This blog really gives me a place to go and be ME. Not mom, not wife, not daughter…..just ME! Don’t get me wrong, I love being all those things. But this blog really gives me the chance to get in the zone, be creative, and do things I really love. I’m glad you’re by my side on this little journey!! I wouldn’t have it any other way!

New Family Room Curtains

You guys may or may not remember in my Home Goals post, I mentioned that one of my goals for our family room was to buy/make new curtains. You know, ones that weren’t high waters.

These curtains used to be 96”. Then they got washed and they shrunk to 88”. We have super tall windows so 96” barely sweeps the ground. After the wash, they shrunk up about 8”. Gross. I was really missing those 8”. Highwater curtains don’t really tickle my pickle, ya know?
I lived with it for a long time though. I guess I was just waiting for the right “deal” on curtain panels to pop up or for me to find the right fabric. But let’s face it, curtain panels are ridiculously expensive and fabric can be too. Especially when I needed about 12 yards of fabric.
Enter Black Friday.
My cousin and I decided to brave some of the Black Friday sales. There was something at Sears that she wanted to buy for her son. While there, some sheets caught my eye! I liked the design and they were gray so they would match our décor. They were on sale for $10 (for the whole set). So, I bought 2 sets of sheets. They sat in a closet since then. Until yesterday.
I finally busted these bad boys out and sewed them up. I just cut the flat sheets in half to create my 4 panels.

I really love that they were super cheap sheets (like 100 count kinda cheap) so they are nice and flowy and sheer. They let in tons of light! But best of all……THEY’RE NOT HIGH WATERS!!

Oh….and I moved that bookshelf into the family room. I’m not sure if I love it there. I think I might slap some white DIY chalk paint on that bad boy (everything’s a “bad boy” today. weird.) and see if it makes a difference.
Anyway, I’m not totally in love with these curtains but they are LOADS better than the high waters. So I’m happy….for now. And you can’t really beat 4 new curtain panels for $20!
So that’s that! New curtains. $20. Happy mama!

Weekend Recap {Baby Shower Bliss}

Hi friends! Happy Monday (is it even appropriate to say Happy Monday??) I hope you all had a fabulous weekend! I sure did!

On Sunday we had a baby shower for my girlfriend, Betsy. She is having her 2nd baby boy! I know people don’t usually do showers for the 2nd baby, especially if it’s the same sex. But, Betsy had her first 4 years ago and she ended up giving everything away. So she was in need of some new baby gear!

It was a small get together at a local bistro. We had a great brunch and all you can drink mimosas!

Our friend Lindsey did a wonderful job of coordinating it all.

How cute is that cake!?! Lindsey wears many hats and cake baking and decorating is just one of them. She did an awesome job with this “belly” cake!

I made the diaper cake. This was only the 2nd cake I’ve ever made and I love how it turned out! For the center I used a glass vase and I stuffed it with a few goodies. It’s a great way to hide presents inside the cake! My good bloggy friend Karen has a great post up today about how to make a diaper cake! Go check it out!

Playroom Update {Pt. 2}

Hi friends and HAPPY FRIDAY!!

What are you up to this weekend? Any big plans for the Super Bowl? We usually have a BIG party at our house each year for the Super Bowl, but I just really did not feel up to it this year. We usually go all out and I make tons of appetizers and desserts and we have food catered in and there’s usually about 40-45 people here. I just didn’t want to deal with it this year so we’re not having the party. Which, I guess is a good thing since the Giants are playing. That’s Scott’s team so he’ll be glad he gets to actually watch the game!

Anyway….on to the reason for today’s post!

As you know, most of the rooms in our house are a constant work in progress (isn’t that how it is for everybody?!?). I made a tiny little update to the playroom. The last time I showed you guys the playroom, I had just painted it and we installed rain gutter bookshelves and set up a little desk/art area for Emily.

The wall above Emily’s little desk (which also used to be mine when I was a baby) was blank and needed something. I thought since the space was right above her art area, it would be a perfect place to display some of her ~~scribble scrabble~~ art.

A while back I was browsing in a thrift store that is right down the street and I found this HUGE gold mirror. It actually used to be the front of a fancy medicine cabinet. It was super heavy but there was no way to hang it up, since it was just the “face” to the medicine cabinet. Weird. Anyway….I snagged it for $10 and brought it home simply because I loved the frame.

And here is where I’m kicking myself……

I cannot find my before pictures of this mirror!!! ARGH! They must’ve somehow gotten deleted off my camera. Just picture a huge, gold framed mirror. Got it?

I had to unscrew about 25 screws from the back of the frame in order to get the mirror out. But I popped it out and was left with just the frame. I cleaned it up and went to town on it with some white spray paint. It took a ton of coats (about 4) to get the coverage I needed.

I needed something for the middle. Hhhhmm…..styrofoam!! Yes! I had a huge sheet out in the garage so I simply cut out an oval to fit inside the frame.

I then used some spray adhesive and fabric I already had on hand to cover the piece of styrofoam.

Then I just hot glued the styrofoam to the inside of the frame.

{See the back of the frame in all it’s gold glory? And all those dadgum screw holes??}

I was stumped as to how to hang it up for a few minutes. Then the lightbulb went off and I simply took a piece of sisal rope and tied it to 2 of the screws that I had taken out and then just screwed the screws right back into the frame.

And here she is all hung up in the playroom:

There’s no art on it yet, but we’ll get there! It really makes a big statement in the playroom and I love that the fabric matches some of the fabric in the bunting on the wall to the left!

Now I need to make some cutesy, bling-y pins so I can pin Em’s artwork to the board.

White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookies

I posted ages ago about these white chocolate macadamia nut cookies.

I made them again last week for a dinner party we hosted and I seriously forgot how darn good these cookies are!! So I thought it deserved another blog post! I like to share the yumminess! And I kind of like to feel like I’m not the only one breaking “resolutions” and abandoning “goals” if ya catch my drift!

Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 well beaten egg
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 pkg. white chocolate chips
chopped macadamia nuts

Directions:

Soften the butter slightly
Cream the sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, & butter
Add the egg & mix thoroughly
Add flour & baking soda & mix
Add white chocolate chips & chopped nuts. Mix well.
Roll into 1” balls and place on a nonstick cookie sheet.
Bake at 350 degrees for 9-10 minutes.
Cool on a cooling rack.

Um….seriously so yummy!

And just for fun, I whipped up a little 4x6 recipe card for ya! Just right click & save!

Now, go forth & bake some epic cookies!

A Small Dining Room Update

Our dining room is still a work in progress. We still need to add the faux wainscoting to the bottom part of the wall and paint it white.

But, I just can’t imagine starting another big project right now. I mean, not that adding faux wainscoting is a huge ordeal, but it will be time consuming and involve more paint and paint brushes and after painting the whole playroom by myself…..I’m just not interested in that right now. At least not for another week or two! Hehehe!

Anyway, I did make a couple minor updates since you saw it last.

#1. I added some décor to top of the buffet table and hung a mirror (and of course I hung it too high and have been too lazy to move it down some).

Nothing crazy and the vignette is still a work in progress too, but it’s a start. I need to find something to fill the tall vase on the left and I’d like to replace the lamp. I also STILL need to slipcover those dadgum zebra chairs. It’s on the list.

The update I’m most thrilled with is the addition of some simple wall art.

You’ll see in the very first picture that the wall to the left of the doorway was blank. I had to big empty wall spaces to fill on either side of the window.

I found these gorgeous distressed white iron scroll-y doom-a-jigs at Hobby Lobby! And they were 40% off (which made it about $25 for both of them)! I knew they would be perfect for the space! And they are! I think they were the perfect addition.

Love, love, love them!

Now if we can just ever get the rest of the room finished. One day motivation will strike, I just know it!

DIY Mini Pallet Valentines Art

Hey, hey, hey!! Happy Monday!!
I hope you all had a fabulous weekend! Our weekend was great! We just hung out a lot as a family, grilled steaks, tried new recipes, played at the park and on the golf course, and just enjoyed time together as a family. That’s what it’s all about, right?!?
I also made this super easy and super cute Valentines Day art! I don’t really get all crazy with my Valentines decorations. I hang a wreath and a flag on our porch and I put one or two things on the mantel. But definitely nothing extravagant. I love how this sign is so simple and subtle and that it doesn’t look too “Valentine-y”!

I love, love, love the look of pallets in the home. Pinterest is full of yummy ideas for using pallets in your home from restructuring them to be coffee tables, to beautiful art! My recent favorite is Jen’s Valentines Pallet Art! So pretty!
Although I love the look of pallet art, let’s face it…..I don’t have the time or patience to hunt down a pallet, clean it, sand it, paint it, blah…blah….blah! If you’re new here (hi! and welcome!! and thank you so, so, so much for following along!!), you’ll soon come to realize that I love projects that are 3 things: quick, easy, and cheap! Oh and it’s gotta be pretty! Ok, so 4 things!
So while browsing in Hobby Lobby one day, I found these pretty little packages of wood pieces. They were just wood strips and there were 4 in a package for $2. I bought 3 packages, came home, and got to work!
Here are the supplies:

packages of wood strips from craft store
white paint & foam brush
vinyl
wood glue

I was a little impatient and didn’t get a picture of the wood strips in the actual package, but you can at least see what the package looks like.
So I just laid out all my wood strips to get the size “pallet” that I wanted. I saved 2 of the wood strips for the back.

Then I just used the wood glue to glue all the horizontal strips to the 2 vertical strips. Can you see the “mini pallet” coming together?!
Once they were all glued on, I let it dry for about an hour while I did other things. I came back and got busy painting with some plain white acrylic paint.
It took a few coats to get the coverage I wanted.

I don’t have pictures of this step, but I created my saying in Silhouette Studio and cut it out with vinyl on my Silhouette. Nothing better than a little Jason Mraz lyrics for V-day!

I used transfer paper to transfer my vinyl onto the “mini pallet”. And here’s the end result:

I love how it looks on my console table and is just the perfect touch of Valentine’s!

Playroom Progress

Hi, friends!! Man, I just realized I’ve been pretty MIA this week!! Yikes! Sorry about that. I literally cannot believe it’s already Friday!! Where did the week go??

Well, my week started off pretty hectic. I had made up my mind Sunday night that I was going to start painting the playroom on Monday (more on that in a minute). Well, Monday morning the hubs tells me that he would like to invite some coworkers over for dinner on Wednesday night. No biggie. I probably shouldn’t have started painting the playroom and focused on cleaning and getting ready for guests on Wednesday, but I had already made up my mind that I was going to paint. You know how when you decide to do something, it kind of can’t wait (please tell me you guys are like that too)? Well, I was in full-on playroom project mode and there was no stopping me. So I spent Monday and Tuesday painting the playroom and Wednesday cleaning and cooking. Naturally on Thursday, I crashed! I napped when Em napped which I NEVER do!

But, it’s FRIDAY and no one can complain about that! Whoop!

So….back to the playroom (that is what this post is about, right?)

Earlier this month when I was thinking about my home goals for 2012, I knew the playroom was one area I really wanted to tackle. It’s one of the first rooms people potentially see (depending on if they look left or look right) when they first walk in the front door. Although this room is usually a disaster thanks to my busy little 15 month old, I would feel better if it were a cute, decorated disaster. Wouldn’t you feel better??

First things first…..PAINT! I mean, painting really is the worst. Some people love it and find it so relaxing. I can’t stand it. But I do it because the end result just tickles me pink for months on end. So I knew I had to paint this room.

I’ve mentioned before that the playroom and dining room are like one giant room (they are totally open to each other). So, the paint color I chose for the playroom was close to the same color as the stencil in the dining room. I say that it’s “close” to the color because when I went to Lowes to get the paint for the playroom, the color match machine was broken. Not to mention, there were dried up paint drips that ran right over the label that had the numbers of the formula for the paint color. DOH! So I took the paint swatch to Home Depot and crossed my fingers. And I’m happy to say it’s pretty darn close. It didn’t have to be perfect anyway. By the way, the paint color is Benjamin Moore’s Crystalline but I had them take a little bit of the blue out.

On Monday as soon as I got Em down for her nap, I set off to paint!

I’m not labeling that last picture as “after” because I still have a lot to do in here. First off, I need to hide those ugly cords coming from behind the TV. I guess my method of sticking them to the back of the TV with blue painter’s tape was a major fail (as evidenced by the above picture). Plan B. I’d also like to add labels to the black storage bins. I’m also still thinking about adding some stripes to the curtains in here like the ones in the dining room. I just LOVE the curtains in the dining room and I think they’d be fun over on this side of the room too!

We hung some rain gutter bookshelves that I just adore!! It’s another one of those projects that makes me wonder why we didn’t do it sooner!

I made the fabric bunting with some scrap fabric I had in my stash and some white grosgrain ribbon. Easy peasy and it looks so cute! I’m really trying to “de-stash” so this was a good little project for that!
See that little wooden desk and chair? It is a handmade piece that I got that from my aunt and uncle for MY 1st birthday!! It is such a great piece and is still kickin’ and quite sturdy 29 years later!! It is sooooo incredibly special to now have this in my daughter’s playroom. I plan on painting it with some white DIY chalk paint and doing some chalkboard paint on top! The little tin bucket hanger came from Ikea. I would like to put some frames above it on that blank wall to hold Emily’s art! Picture a gallery wall of scribble scrabble.

So, this room is still a work in progress but I’m excited about the progress I made this week. The paint is just perfect and it really makes the white trim just pop! Oh….and I love the way the framed pattern pieces look against the blue paint!

So fun!

So that’s what has been going on in our crazy house this week. Painting and dinner parties. Good times.

Baked Sweet and Sour Chicken

I have been pinning some really great recipes lately, but haven’t really been trying any of them out! I finally decided to pick one and try it out for dinner!

I chose this recipe of baked sweet and sour chicken. I love me some sweet and sour chicken so I thought this would be the perfect dinner!

I have to say…..it was quite tasty!! It turned out great and was really yummy!

Here’s how you make it:

For the chicken coating:

2-4 boneless chicken breasts
salt + pepper
1 cup cornstarch
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup canola oil

For the sweet and sour sauce:

3/4 cup sugar
4 tbs ketchup
1/2 cup vinegar
1 tbs soy sauce
1 tsp garlic salt

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Wash your chicken breasts and pat dry. Cut the breasts into cubes. Season with some salt and pepper. Dip the chicken in the cornstarch, then in the eggs. Heat the oil in a large skillet. Once the oil is hot, place your chicken in the skillet and cook until browned, but not cooked all the way through. Place the chicken in a greased 9x13 baking dish. Mix all of the ingredients for the sweet and sour sauce and pour evenly over the chicken. Bake for about an hour, turning the chicken every 15-20 minutes.

There are just a couple things I would do differently next time I make it. First, I would add about a 1/4 cup of brown sugar to the sauce mixture to give it a little bit extra “sweetness”. I would also make a little extra sauce to pour over the chicken at the end after it is done cooking!

So that’s it! Pretty easy peasy!

OH…..I also made a pecan pie for dessert. This is like my 4th or 5th attempt at making a pecan pie. I keep doing something wrong. I’ve used different recipes and everything. It always turns out really soupy in the middle!! The filling doesn’t ever “gel”. Does that make sense? What am I doing wrong? This time I followed this recipe. HELP!!!

A Valentine’s Shirt For My Valentine

Ok, well I guess she’s my 2nd Valentine since I think Scott has to technically be my first Valentine!
It’s FRIDAAAAAYYY!!!! I wanted to share with you a cute (and easy) shirt I made for Emily for Valentine’s Day!

Here’s how I did it!
Supplies:

Craft cutter (I used my Silhouette)
Heat ‘N Bond (or other fabric interfacing)
Fabric of choice
Iron
Shirt (I got mine at Hobby Lobby for $3)
Scrap paper (optional)

I started by ironing some plain pink fabric to some Heat ‘N Bond (man, I love that stuff!!!).

Then in Silhouette Studio I created my design. It looked a little something like this:

I cut out the L, V, and E on the pink fabric using my Silhouette! I cut the heart separately on some pink polka dot fabric, using the same method.

I still use the cutting mat just for extra “security” even when I’m cutting vinyl and fabric even though I don’t think you have to.
Wait…..let me back up! Of course, before I ever even cut the fabric I did a test cut with some scrap paper and placed it on my shirt to make sure I liked the size, spacing, etc.

Looks good to me! Ok, now back to the fabric…..
So after I cut the fabric, I peeled the paper backing from the Heat ‘N Bond off the back of the fabric letters and ironed them down to my shirt. I tilted the heart a little bit. I kinda like it that way!

Now, Heat ‘N Bond is great and I love it dearly. However, it has been known to peel up on projects I’ve done in the past (hhmmm….could be user error?? Naaahhh…we’ll blame it on the Heat N Bond). So, I stitched along the outsides of the letters with some light pink thread just to make sure they stuck!

And here’s my little model sportin’ her new duds…..

Love it! I can’t wait for her to wear it on Valentine’s Day!

Teal & Chevron Kitchen Towels {DIY}

So I was in Target a couple weeks ago and saw some cute black and white chevron kitchen towels. I snagged 2 of them up! If you follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter then you got a glimpse at the new towels!
So I ran home all excited about my new goodies! I barely got my foot through the door before I was tearing into the Target bag and pulling out the pretty, new towels to hang them on my stove handle. I stood back and looked at them and I didn’t love them. {Enter sad face here}. Boo! So they hung there for a week or so kinda plain and boring.
Then, a couple days ago I ran to Dollar Tree to pick up something real quick. I was walking to the checkout register when I saw these fun, bright colored terry kitchen towels! They had a bright green, yellow, orange (I think), and teal. They were so fun! So I snagged 3 teal ones. I knew immediately what I was going to do!

Yup! The chevron towels took one look at the teal towels and they immediately fell in love. They got married. Mr. Brother married them in a very quaint ceremony. Ok…..enough with the dorky wedding talk! How do you guys even stick around here??
So my initial thought was to just sew a piece of one of the chevron towels to the teal towel and sew some ribbon on (you know I’ve gotta tie it to the oven so Lil Mama won’t constantly yank them down).
So I cut the chevron towel in a wide strip to go at the bottom of the teal towel.

I sewed about a 1/4 inch seam at the top so it would look finished.

Then I sewed it to the teal towel and sewed the ribbon on.

Yay! I loved it. But I thought this little towel looked a little lonely. I decided my kitchen needs something more than just teal and chevron. How about ruffles, teal, and chevron!! Oh yes ma’am!

Much better!!
I basically just cut the 2nd chevron towel into 3.5 inch strips. I set my sewing machine to the longest stitch length and set the tension to the tightest setting. Another little trick I use when sewing ruffles is to hold the top thread between my pointer finger and thumb as I sew. This adds a little extra tension and causes it to ruffle a little more.
It took 3 ruffle strips to go across the teal towel and I did two rows.

Love, love, love! It was just the pop of color I needed in my kitchen. And I love that they are the same, but not matchy matchy!
What do you think? These fun, bright towels kind of have me itching for Spring (even though we’ve been having Spring-like weather here in Florida).

Life As Of Late

So last week I took a couple days off from my cleaning and organizing madness. I spent those days with my sweet baby girl. So many days I get so caught up with cleaning, projects, organizing and making sure things are “just so” that I forget to stop and really treasure the time I have with sweet Emily.
So we took a few days last week to just chill and do fun stuff together. One day we went to our very first “Mommy & Me” class! It was so cute and I think Em had a lot of fun.

We also went on a picnic! Emily loves spending time with her B.B.F (baby best friend) down the street! And I gotta say…..I really love spending time with her B.B.F’s mom! It’s so nice to get together with other moms and have some adult interaction!

Emily didn’t even want to eat! She just wanted to run and play! And her B.B.F. quickly joined in!

And we went on lots and lots of walks!

Emily found a leaf! She wasn’t sure what to think of it. She saved it for later in her little storage compartment in the front of her car! So cute. Sometimes I just wish I could get inside that little brain of hers and see what she’s thinking!

We had such a great few days last week!

Thanks to my parents watching Emily, I was able to sneak out for a couple hours one night last week. I went to a cake class called “Corks & Cakes”. My neighbor is actually the instructor and she was the one who made Emily’s smash cake for her 1st birthday! When she posted Em’s owl smash cake on her Facebook page, she had a huge response and people wanted that cake to be one of the classes! So, she made last week’s class the “owl cake” theme! I just had to do it! Here’s how mine turned out:

Not too shabby! And it was yummy too! Next month we’re making a ruffle cake! I can’t wait to learn how to do that!

So….that’s what has been going on with us ‘round here! Well, that and of course I had to squeeze in a few projects and a little organizing. I’ll share some of that with you later this week!

My Favorite Organizational Tools

Well, it’s still January and we are still organizing away over here! Actually, I’ve taken the past couple days off. I’ve really just been enjoying my days with Emily. We’ve been going on lots of walks, playing with all those Christmas toys, and even went on a picnic! The weather here in Florida has been incredible. Low to mid 70’s everyday! I love it!

Anyway….I need to get back into the swing of things with my organizing! I was thinking about some of the things I use to organize and some of the things I wish I had to organize with! So, I thought I’d put together a list of some of my favorite tools for organizing!

#1. Becky Higgins Project Life Kit

I don’t have this kit yet, but I am just itching to get one! I am horrible at scrapbooking and I think this would be the perfect thing to help me get all my photos organized and documented!

#2. Wire baskets

I just love these wire baskets! They easily contain clutter, but still allow you to see what’s inside. I actually just found a couple of these on clearance at Target for under $3!! Score!

#3. White Decorative File Holder

I just love, love, love this little guy. So pretty! I will own this one day. Soon. I hope. Drooooollll!!!

#4. Dymo Letra Tag Label Maker

Let me just tell you….I love this little guy!! It’s small footprint is perfect for storing. I label just about everything with this bad boy!

#5. Over The Door Shoe Organizers

I have one of these strapped to the back of just about every door in my house!! Ok, not every door, but at least 3 of them! One actually holds shoes, one holds scarves, hats, mittens, etc, and the other holds cleaning supplies! They’re relatively cheap and pack a big storage punch!

#6. Storage Ottomans

Our ottomans don’t look like this, but they do provide a lot of storage! We have 2 storage ottomans pushed together in our family room so it looks like one big coffee table/ottoman! We love it. These ottomans hold everything from favorite magazines, to the Wii Fit board, remote controls, etc. These would even be great to throw some toys in for the little ones!

#7. '>Totes, totes, and more totes

These little guys are so inexpensive and really are great for carrying around cleaners from room to room. I also use one of these to put all the craft supplies that I need for a project in. Unfortunately, I don’t have a room or even so much as a corner for my crafts so I keep a tote by where I store my craft stuff and I just throw all my project supplies in there.

#8. Baskets!

I mean, this should almost go without saying, right?? Baskets are so key to organizing!! I literally have multiple baskets in just about every room to hide our ~~junk~~ precious treasures! I also keep a basket at the bottom of the stairs to collect things that need to go upstairs!

Home Goals 2012

Last year I didn’t make any home goals. I figured I’d just do what I could when I could. Well, we did a lot, but I still think we could have made much more progress if we would’ve had a clear set of defined goals!

So this year, I’m making some goals gosh darn it!

I have a lot of things I would like to do around here so let’s take a look, shall we?

Goals for Dining Room:

Add faux wainscoting under chair rail
Find or sew slipcovers for zebra chairs
Make a burlap pendant light to replace fixture
Remove or find new cushions for chairs
Figure out wall art

Goals for Family Room:

Make new curtains that aren’t high-waters! This has been driving me crazy for ages!
Disguise dog cage a little better or find it a new home. We love having the dogs in the family room with us (and they love it too), but the cage is such an eye sore. I need to figure something out.
Change out the Christmas art on the canvas board.
Find new end tables since we sold our old ones on Craigslist last week.

Ummm….this room is a hot mess and I have some big plans for it! I’m just keepin’ it real with these pictures, people! I’m actually ok with this room being a hot mess because it’s Emily’s space to play and be creative.

Goals for Play Room:

Paint. I’m probably going to use the stencil color from the dining room since they are adjoining and wide open to each other.
Hang rain gutters for book shelves. We’ve already purchased the gutter, we just need to cut it and hang it.
Get a small table and chairs for an art station. I’m thinking this option from IKEA. But, I would like to paint the table and chairs white and paint the top with chalkboard paint.

I want to take that shelf out of the corner and possibly make that the “art corner”. That is where I’d put the table above and come up with a creative way to display her artwork in that corner.
I also want to get rid of the red couch. I would like to replace it with 2 little lounge chairs. These are some good options:

I’d also like to add some fun stripes to the curtains in here as well!

I ~~have~~ had some big plans for this room. I was super stoked about painting some pretty gray stripes on these walls until I looked at these pictures just now and realized those darn boxes are a little bit of a problem. Hhmm…..let’s see how creative I can get because I really want those stripes!!

Goals For The Laundry Room:

Paint stripes (or just paint the walls plain if the stripes won’t work)
Add some storage with cabinets above washer & dryer
Slide washer and dryer down closer to doorway
Build a make-shift folding table against the far wall
Add shelving and cute baskets for gift wrapping supplies
Add clear containers and jars for laundry detergent, etc.
Get it to look as much like Jen’s laundry room as humanly possible.

This room makes me want to vom in my mouth a little bit. We literally NEVER use it (guests very rarely stay with us and when they do, we give them our bedroom since the guest room is adjacent to Emily’s room). I hate, hate, hate this room.

Goals For The Guest Room:

Get new bedding. Literally, anything but this brown and blue will do!! Bleh. I’m looking for light and bright in this room!
Change out artwork.
Find a different place for the ridiculously large highboy. This room is FAR too small for a huge highboy and a huge desk. And we need our desk. So it’s stayin’. Not really sure what to do with the highboy.
Hang new curtains.
Maybe paint. I really don’t like painting at all so painting this room will be one of those things that happens if I have time and if I get really bored.

Do I even need to say anything?? This room is such a disaster. Again, just keeping it real! There is so much I want to do in here.

Goals for the Master Bedroom:

Make it more of a relaxing, peaceful place (this might require actually folding the laundry and putting it away).
Possibly close off that window to the right of the bed. I’ve always hated this window because it’s placement makes zero sense to me. It’s a random window on a random wall and I’m not a fan. I was totally justified this morning when I read that Chris from Just A Girl is having the same problem in her bedroom! Random window with no purpose = hate! If I can’t get rid of the window, then this is my inspiration photo:

This is a wall almost just like ours. Random one window. I love the wall color and the bed too. This is what I’m aiming for! So to achieve this I need to:

paint
get more pillows
find artwork/mirror for over bed
DIY a bed/headboard
redo the nightstands so they’re not so matchy matchy
find a huge fabulous mirror to hang over the dresser instead of the mirror that came with the dresser

And that’s about it! Considering these are my home goals for 2012, I have a whole entire year to get this stuff done!! Now if I can teach my impatient self to pace these projects out and not start too many things at once, we’ll be good to go!

I can’t wait to share my progress with you! I’m so glad I made these goals this year and that I have shared them with you. This way I can actually be held accountable!

DIY Quatrefoil Wood Tray

Hi friends!
Happy Hump Day!
Yesterday I shared with you my organized family command center! I’m proud to report it still looks like that! Haha. That’s saying something for us!
You might have noticed the cute little tray that is holding the pen cup and “mail box”.

It’s a super cute little addition to our newly organized space!

It started out as a plain little $3 wooden tray from Hobby Lobby.

I gave it a few light coats of Krylon’s Pebble spray paint. Then, I opened up my Silhouette software and used the “geometric background (lg)” pattern to cut my white vinyl.

I weeded my vinyl (the absolute WORST part of vinyl projects) and used the negative space of the vinyl so it would look like my tray was stenciled. I used transfer paper to transfer my vinyl to my tray. Note: vinyl doesn’t like to stick to spray paint that well. Boo! Try acrylic next time.

Here’s what I ended up with:

Yay! I love it! Super simple (I’m not a fan of complicated). Super quick (seriously….nap time only lasts so long). And super cheap (well….because I’m just a cheap-o).
So there ya have it! Now…..go forth and make a cutesy tray!
