MWC is the biggest mobile technology exhibition in the world. Starting on February 25^th, more than 65 thousand people visited the fair to find out what surprises the giants have got for them this year. And yes, they were not disappointed. MWC showed off some jaw dropping technologies that the enthusiastic will love.

Mobile phones are the hot cakes these days, so definitely this fair stays at everyone’s spotlight. Most companies that manufacture such technologies use this platform to exhibit what surprises they have, and now there’s a brutal fight going on between the smartphone and the tablet makers. Let’s see what technologies were showed in the MWC 2013.

Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra:

Who knew Alcatel would come up with an Android smartphone that actually deserves praise. The phone is oddly named, ‘One Touch Idol Ultra’. We couldn’t figure out what that actually means, because there was no ‘one touch’ deal. This phone was released slightly before the MWC but was showed for the first time in the MWC. This phone is a mid-range handset but we were stunning to see what it brings to us in that price. It’s the slimmest phone we have ever seen. Alcatel featured an AMOLED 4.7 inch display with resolution 1280x720 pixels. The phone has a 1.2 GHz Quad Core processor and a 1GB RAM.

Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra

This phone is even thinner than the Xperia Z or iPhone 5. Alcatel should claim their ‘rights’ for the slimmest phone. The phone is only 6.45mm; sometimes you may even forget that you have a smartphone in your pocket.

Everything was good; we just expected that the battery life would be a little better. The battery is 1820 mAh which is pretty decent.

HP Slate 7:

The Android tablet by HP. Surprisingly, this is not one of those high priced out of reach tablets. The configuration is moderate and the price is low, this tablet will be sold at only 169$. This tablet was first released in US, and the UK release will follow shortly.

The HP Slate 7 sports a 7 inch display that is understandable by the name, and the display resolution is 1024x700 pixels; shares the same resolution with Kindle Fire. The bezel is very wide, not pleasant to see. The overall build is good though.

And what we liked that this HP Slate 7 uses a less modified version of Android. The Android version is 4.1 Jelly Bean, and still priced lot less than the Nexus 7. It has a 1.6 GHz Dual Core Cortex A9 processor and 1GB of RAM. Another advantage of this is the expandable memory option, which you don’t get with the Nexus 7.

Overall justification of the tablet – it’s good. Just the display is dull.

ZTE Grand Memo:

This phone seems like competing with the Samsung Galaxy Note II in its own ways. It’s a 5.7 inch device, pretty huge like the Note II. Some people call these devices ‘phablet’, so we would be referring the Grand Memo as a phablet. This MWC, these phablets are the ones to steal all spotlights onto them for being extra ordinarily awesome, and Chinese manufacturer ZTE gets a part of that limelight too. This phone is a rival against the Huawei Ascend Mate as well, but the Ascend Mate was released on the CES, not this MWC.

ZTE Grand Memo

However, the display resolution is 1280x700 pixels. The pixel count is only 258 ppi, which is pretty good for a smartphone but not a phablet of this size. Although when the brightness is turned up to the full, the display looks perfectly ok.

This is a big device and it will definitely fill up your palm, you won’t even be use it with one hand. The glossy plastic shell somehow doesn’t look good. The phone runs by a quad core Snapdragon 800 processor having a clock speed of 1.7 GHz and a 1 GB RAM, good configuration for a device like this.

The 13 Megapixel camera captures good quality photos. The battery is big, 3200 mAh. And the Android Jelly Bean 4.1 is highly modified, not everyone is going to like it.

Asus PadFone Infinity:

This MWC 2013, two PadFones were announced by Asus. Asus PadFone is unique, one of its type. It’s a 5 inch smartphone that docks into a 10 inch tablet. Surprising huh? Yes it is, Asus always surprises us with their innovativeness. It is priced at 999 euros, little pricey even more than the iPhone 5, but this price is worth it because you are getting two devices at the same time. The first PadFone was released in last year’s MWC, and the new two is released in this MWC.

The phone is gorgeous. The aluminum brushed architectures gives a premium feel and the front part is built of flat scratch proof HD display. This phone is so appealing that you can’t resist picking it up and touching. The rounded builds will just slide into your pocket without any trouble, and all it brings to you is impressiveness.

Turn on the display and get mesmerized. The display is brilliant, the colors are so vivid. This 5 inch phone’s display resolution is extremely high, 1920x1080 pixels. This display even beats retina; the pixel density is 441 ppi while the iPhone display density is only 326 ppi.

And to dock the phone into the tablet station, just slide it in and the phone will lock up into position and you are done. The 10 inch tablet dock has the same screen resolution and even in this 10 inch display, the resolution is good.

The phone has 1.7 GHz quad core Snapdragon 600 processor and a 2GB RAM for faster processing. The internal memory storage is 32/64 GB; the camera is 13 megapixels with an aperture of f/2.0.

This device is an utmost luxury in smart device arena, but we doubt how many people will buy this for the high price.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8:

Another Note phablet from Samsung Galaxy line up. This is bigger than the 7 inch tablet, smaller than the 10 inch one but yet called a phablet. Maybe because this slate like device makes calls? We don’t really need to talk much about Samsung devices as most of the techie people now know what Samsung has to offer.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8

It has an 8 inch 1280x700 pixels PLS display. It comes with a 1.6 GHz quad core processor and 2GB of RAM. The battery is enormous, 4600 mAh battery will keep your device alive without draining out the juice.

The configuration is good and we loved it. The only question that we have had is ‘does it makes sense to talk in an 8 inch phablet?’ We don’t think it does, talking in a slate only makes you looks stupid.

Acer Iconia B1-A71 is a 7-inch tablet. Apparently it’s made of plastic. It’s light in weight but feels fragile. The hardware does not exude the feeling of resilience. Application of pressure on its screen shows creaks and pushes through.

Regarding the design and structure, the front of the tablet has a big black bezel. Its screen peeps through it in a manner similar to a digital photo-frame. Its VGA camera is at the right side. It’s Acer branding being in the middle. The blue colored frame doesn’t do much to compliment the gadget.

The back has been done in black colored plastic. A Micro USB port is located at the bottom with a slot for a micro-SD card that is covered with an insert.
