วันนี้มีโอกาสเรียนเดี่ยวกับเซนเซหลายชม. หลายวิชา หลายอาวุธด้วยกัน
ซึ่งล้วนแล้วเป็นวิชาของซามูไรโบราณ ที่ไม่ใช่ contact sports ที่สู้กันแบบปะทะตัวต่อตัวเหมือน spochan

แต่เซนเซก็ให้เอาดาบสั้นของ spochan มาด้วย เพื่อจะสอน kata ของสำนักให้
เลยถือโอกาสกึ่งถามกึ่งบอกเซนเซว่า ปีนี้ไม่มีโอกาสฝึกสู้กับใครเลย

คือจริง ๆ แล้วอยากจะไปเอาหน้ากากมาขอให้เซนเซฝึกให้ แต่ก็เกรงใจ
เพราะตามหลักแล้วลูกศิษย์จะไม่ขอ ต้องแล้วแต่อาจารย์ แต่เซนเซก็ดูเหมือนจะรู้

ที่น่าสนใจก็คือ เซนเซบอกว่าไม่ต้องไปเอาหน้ากาก ให้ฝึกแค่ภายในก้าวขาก้าวเดียวนี่แหละ เริ่มจากท่ายกดาบเหนือหัว แค่พยายามตีข้อมือข้างที่ถือดาบเซนเซให้ได้ก็พอ ไม่ต้องตีที่อื่น

เป็นการฝึกที่น่าสนใจและไม่เคยคิดมาก่อน ว่าเพียงแค่นี้ก็จะทำได้มากมาย
แต่เป็นเพราะว่าเป็นเซนเซ ถึงทำได้ ผลลัพธ์ก็คงไม่ต้องพูดถึง เพราะไม่สามารถ
ตีถูกเซนเซได้เลย แต่ในขณะเดียวกัน ก็โดนตีสวนกลับมาเสียไม่เป็นผู้เป็นคนหลายจุด แถมเซนเซยังสอนให้เห็นโดยไม่ต้องพูดอีกว่า เราเปิดจุดว่างตรงไหนอีกบ้าง มีแกล้งตีเฉี่ยวหน้าด้วย หวาดเสียวดีมาก เพราะไม่มีหน้ากากคอยกัน เสียงลมจากดาบเซนเซวืดผ่านหน้าผากไปลมแทบใส่ ต้องกลืนน้ำลายเอื๊อก เพราะจริง ๆ ถ้าเซนเซจะฟาดให้โดนจริง ๆ ก็ได้ แต่นั่นทำท่าจะตีเฉย ๆ แบบสั่งสอน เพื่อให้รู้ว่าไม่มีสติอีกแล้ว

จากนั้นเซนเซก็บอกว่าให้หัดฝึกเองคนเดียว คราวนี้งงเลย ฝึกสู้กับใครล่ะนี่คนเดียว สักพักถึงเข้าใจว่า เซนเซหมายถึงให้ลองคิดสถานการณ์ดูเองคนเดียวนั่นเอง จริง ๆ แล้วคิดไปคิดมามันก็เหมือนหนังจีนกำลังภายใน ที่คนฝึกวิทยายุทธฝึกเองคนเดียวในท่าต่าง ๆ แต่เซนเซดูเหมือนจะอ่านใจเราออกตอนบอกว่า ไม่ใช่ทำแค่ท่าเฉย ๆ เป็นใคร ๆ ก็ทำได้ แต่ฝึกคนเดียวนั้นใช้ใจ คือสมมติว่าเขาตีมาอย่างนี้จะทำอย่างไร อย่างนี้เป็นต้นนั่นเอง

จะว่าไปแล้วนั่นคือจุดอ่อนของเรา จริง ๆ อยากจะโทษว่าเป็นเพราะไม่ค่อยจะมีประสบการณ์การเรียนแบบมีคู่ต่อสู้ แต่จริง ๆ แล้วเราก็เคยไปอยู่ญี่ปุ่นมาแล้ว ๓ เดือนนี่นา ตอนนั้นก็มีุรุ่นพี่ร่วมสำนักมากมาย ไหนจะทาบูจิเซนเซอีก นั่นคือระดับปรมาจารย์แล้ว และภรรยาท่านก็แชมป์โลกด้วย จุดอ่อนของเราคือไม่มีจิีนตนาการในการฝึกคนเดียวนั่นเอง คือไม่สามารถมองคู่ต่อสู้มาจากอีกมุมหนึ่งได้แบบ ๓๖๐ องศา ซึ่งเรารู้สึกว่าเซนเซทำตรงนี้ได้ คล้าย ๆ กับว่าจะรู้ว่า คนเรามักจะบุกมาลักษณะไหน ๆ บ้าง ตีมาแนวไหน และลักษณะการโต้ตอบแบบฉับพลันทันที เหมือนกับไม่ต้องมอง ไม่ต้องคิดนั้น ทำยังไง อารมณ์คล้าย ๆ เวลาเฟเดอเรอร์รับลูกเสิร์ฟรอดดิคที่เร็วจนมองไม่ทัน แต่ใช้สัญชาตญาณและฝีมือรับ

ที่แน่ ๆ เรายังไม่เคยพัฒนาไปจนถึงขั้นตีเซนเซในการฝึกแบบนี้ได้เลย ถ้าแบบสู้ครบยก ครบสูตร อาจมีลูกฟลุคบ้าง เซนเซบอกว่าแล้วแต่โชค (ใจร้าย)
แต่ถ้าฝึกแบบวัดใจ วัดฝึมือล้วน ๆ แบบยืนห่างกันหนึ่งช่วงดาบแล้วกำหนดจุดตีอย่างนี้ ยิ่งแถมไม่มีหน้ากากด้วย เราไม่มีทางตีถูกเลยสักครั้ง เซนเซหลบได้หมด แถมเราโดนตีกลับน่วมอีก ไม่คุ้มเลยจริง ๆ แฮะ

สรุปสิ่งที่เรียนรู้วันนี้คือ กลับไปฝึกคนเดียวเพิ่มใหม่อีกอย่าง คือ ไม่ใช่ฝึกเทคนิคท่าทางอย่างเดียวแล้ว แต่ต้องฝึกนึกภาพคู่ต่อสู้ในจินตนาการด้วย ไม่ว่าเขาจะมาท่าไหนในจินตนาการต้องรับได้หมด หรือ หลบได้หมด
และสวนกลับได้หมดด้วย

Well, I tried to use all the Japanese knowledge I have (which is not much) to locate this jisei no ku that I need for my dissertation. Here it is:

徳川家康 75歳 1616
嬉しやと　二度さめて　一眠り　うき世の夢は　暁の空

And this is my humble attempt at translating it. Many dictionaries were used,
both real dictionary, electronic dictionary and online dictionary. But, mind you,
I'm just a novice student of Japanese language. So, there could be many mistakes.

I just go with my guts feeling and my understanding of Dhamma and my
familiarity of other warrior's death poem, that's all!

“Twice awakened, how pleasant it is.
A dream in the world of impermanence is like a dawning sky.”

That reminds me that I haven't composed my death poem yet!

But I sort of like what I used to read from one warrior, whose quote I must
track down one day. He said, "A death is a death. One should not make too much fuss
over it." I think he was referring to the over-emphasis on the death poem during Tokugawa Period where everything sort of went out of context and sometimes lost its original meaning.

I think he is right. But, well, I might try mine any way Wouldn't hurt, would it? Would serve as a good Morananussati for me everyday! At least until I could come up with the version that I like, provided that I don't die first!

Family Ties to Japan

From Funeral Book ...

It's been a while since I last blogged here. Today I went to Japanese class. Despite being an evening class, I always feel recharged after class. There is always something special about the Japanese is very inspiring. That's why I like to use that energy momentum I gain from the class in my other assignments, such as my dissertation project, etc.

Today, I uploaded photos from my great-grandpa's funeral book on to Picasa Web Album. And that's why I feel like blogging here. Personally I like this photo very much because it reminds me of my family tie to Japan.

If you have followed this blog over the years, you would perhaps have marvelled with me how I came to be so fascinated with all Japanese tradition and stuff. My passion seems to be fixated only in the Japan of the old, and never the contemporary.

Until the answer came one day, when I finally won my latest scholarship to Japan, my 3rd, and hopefully not my last. It was then when I accidentally discovered my root, that I actually had ancestors who had very close ties to Japan of the old before.

It took more than a year before I could trace down the funeral book of my great-grandfather, seen in this photo with his father. I believe this is the photo they took not long before they took off to Japan, where my great-great-grandfather became Thai Ambassador to Japan and my great-grandfather grew up and went on to be the first Thai cadet to graduate from not only one but two Japanese elite Army and Imperial War Colleges.

And that is how amazing life is. I embarked unknowingly on a journey to study about the samurai of the old Japan, only to discover my own family, long-forgotten deep in Japan's past. My great-grandfather, it turned out, was trained to be Japan's finest samurai.

Japan, Thank you for these beautiful memories.

In an almost dreamlike set of nostalgic Japan's photos, circa the time my great grandpa was there, I like the ones showing Dai Butsu the most.

The way the sunlight gently falls on Daibutsu is really special. I simply do not have words proper enough to describe it.

I wonder whether the weather would look fine like this, too, the day my great-grandpa went to Kamakura in his days. I'm sure he must have been there more than once because he spent around 20 years altogether in Japan!

I've just located another book I'd like to read.....in Flickr!

See, this is the beauty of Flickr, you'll never know what you're going to find.

I know I'm a visually-stimulated person a.k.a. I learn by seeing. And if I need to get intellectualy stimulated, I need to look at something that stirs up my imagination.

So I boldly type "Tokugawa Samurai" in the Flickr Search box!

And look what I found! Voila! A book!

Well, like it or not, I HAVE to read it. Because if I'm going to do a study on Bushido literature from the Tokugawa era, this fits right in.

Unless I'd like to narrow my study on the early Tokugawa years, that's another issue. hmm.....

We'll see.

Surviving My First Quake in Japan

Well, I've been to Japan for my 3-month research grant since Oct 9 but was too busy to blog.

Now it seems an auspicious day to start because I was officially welcome by Japan's famous earthquake! :)

Well, it was very early in the morning and I was still fast asleep when I felt my stomach churning as if I was lying in my sea cot in a cruise line. It was more like a motion sickness than a quake.

I guess I was too far from the center of the quake so I did not feel it as the powerful 5 on the Richter Scale. It was not powerful enough to wake me up, so to speak. So I continued to sleep. It is a weekend morning, after all!

Here is the report about the quake in the news today.

Thank you, Mother Nature, for a earth-shattering welcome! ;-) It reminds me again of the law of impermanence. Nothing in life is permanent. One moment it's there. The other it's gone.

And on we go with our lives.

A quake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 quake shook Tokyo and its vicinity Saturday morning, the Meteorological Agency said.

There have been many causes for celebrations lately, ne?

First, there was the Imperial Birth of HRH Prince Hisahito (悠仁様のご出産）。

Then, my LASIK was a success despite some postoperative pain. Now I have a super clear vision with no need for glasses or contact lenses. Well, at least until I get old enough to need a reading glass, that is!

And now, today, Thursday, September 14, 2006, I passed my blackbelt exam in Spochan! 　いよいよ一段になりました。　すごい！　 I got both my First Dan certificate and Class A Instructor's certificate in Kodachi (小太刀) or short sword today from sensei after performing Kihon Dosa Kata twice and surviving the grueling 30 rounds of fight non-stop with an upper-class First Dan who happened to hold be the 2005 Asian Champion!

At the moment of this writing, the knuckles on both my hands are still hurting royally, if I may use the expression. But I put on sensei's pain-relieving cream from Japan already tonight. He gave me several months ago after I was nursing an injury from Kenjutsu during a bokuto (木刀) or wooden sword practice with the hard-hitting guys.

Actually I noticed my pain right after the fight and went to look for the mircle cure in Sensei's gym bag. But as Murphy's Law would have it (if things could go wrong, they would go wrong), today, of all those days, sensei forgot to bring his wonder spray from Japan that he normally brings to help alleviate pain from fighting injury. But I'm not complaining. My adrenaline (and perhaps Cortisol too) was running high at that time! But now, ....ouch! hee hee hee

My Instructor's License says I'm number 4629 in the world who are qualified to teach the Kodachi or short sword. In the solemn awarding ceremony that followed the exam, sensei also bestowed on me a short wooden sword together with the instructor's license. I was, in fact, more proud of the instructor's license than the First Dan's Black Belt (the belt was put neatly on the framed certificate) because I felt I earned it through my year of diligent work with sensei and the kids. It was fun being with them and watched them grow and learning together with them and from them. They taught me a lot, actually, the kids.

If there is anything I could wish for today, I wish my Great Grandpa, Major Luang Charoonridhikrai would be with me today. He would be very proud of me, I think. For he, a graduate of 2 Japanese military colleges, were known to love Budo or Japanese martial arts. Oh, how I would like to run to him and say, "Great Grandpa, Great Grandpa, look what I earned today!" I don't know what his reaction would be.

Being a stern man, may be he would not show any feelings, like a good samurai should be. May be he would just tell me to try to compose myself and stop jumping up and down! hee hee hee Or may be he would give me tips on how to be a good fighter and how to tolerate pain. I don't know. I only know I miss him today.

Well, Great Grandpa, no matter where you are today. Please know that you are being thought of fondly and with respect. You are and always will be my hero, my link to the distant past of our family history. My reference point. And my continuous awe at how destiny has somehow bonded us together in more ways than one.

And, Great Grandpa, I know I just started to follow your footstep and this is just a First Dan and I'm nowhere as good as you once were. But, from the bottom of my heart, this one is for you!

Yasukuni: Remember Those Souls

Today the following news makes headlines around the world.

Asahi.com: Koizumi goes ahead with controversial shrine visit on war anniversary

The world views his visit in a negative light. I view it otherwise. I think it is a personal choice and people should stop bringing politics into this private, domestic matter. Let bygone be bygone. We have learned enough from war. Nobody wants war again.

This is the day to remember and pay respect to the people who bravely sacrificed their life to their beloved country. There are many courageous souls in there. I suggest people who make loud protest to take a 1-day tour in the museum next to the shrine.

People who protest should take a Japanese history lesson and learn that the shrine was set up first for people who perished in the Boshin Civil War in 1869. It has then been the place for people who sacrificed their life for the country in various incidents, not just the wars, let alone WWs.

The Japanese has the strong sense of "On" and "Ho-On" or gratefulness and return of gratefulness since the ancient time. That must have been more than a thousand years ago. To protest them from paying respect to these people who sacrificed their life so that the future generation would live strong and free is like to tell them to stop being Japanese. If you read the letters those brave soldiers left behind, you'll find something in common--their caring concern for the future generation, their hope that there will be no more war, and their utmost love for the country and family.

Most of them wrote to their mother before they went out in their last mission. One sentence was very similar among those letters. It is the apology for not being able to go home and take care of them, or the apology that, as a child, they have to die first before the parents. But none of the letters, not even one, shows any sign of despair. It was in fact full of hope, of good will and love for their family behind and their country and the future generation. The message went right from their heart and into yours and, for a moment, you could feel the vibrant energy of their youth. An despite their age, they were all so selfless and sacrficing.

In the museum, you would also see women, nurses who willingly, deliberately sacrificed their life for the country in various capacity, be it in civil or otherwise. You would hear countless stories about mother and son who, despite their heart-breaking sitution, understood and wholeheartedly embraced their duty to the country, etc. You would even see actual quotes how the late Emperor Showa responded to people's concern regarding his surrender of Japan in WWII. "Too many of our people have lost their life already. It does not matter anymore what might happen to me." Walking through the museum is very moving.

When you have walked through the tour, seen the movie, looked into the faces of millions people enshrined there, you would also come to understand the purpose of Yasukuni. It is for peace, not war.

Of course I think one would want to know why the so-called Class-A criminals were also there. Many would also want them removed. I do not think much about those 14 men as I do about 2.5 million others in there. Is there any society or country that are 100% free of criminals? Are we going to ask for the impossible here in this world? And history is normally written by those who won the war, isn't it?

I have my long explanation on this which I may explain on later, if I have time or bother. It was a world-wide joint-Karma period that we all had to go to war. It was situational. We should not blame it especially on anyone. Otherwise it would be endless.

For example, Japan was closing its country fo 400 years during Tokugawa period. Then it was the American by Commodore Perry who forced it to open by a fleet of warship. (Does anyone call him Class-A criminal? He threatened to shoot, you know.) Then the western power sort of brought this idea of "you must westernize and embrace western idea to be considered a civilized people" to the Japanese who in fact preferred to stay a closed, self-sufficient country at that time.

Changing from agricultural country to industrial country, the country could not survive. GATT and WTO was not in place at that time. So what to do when you can't feed your own people or there was an influx of certain resources. The West's idea at that time was to expan your territory. To get a colony. To go to war. Life was certainly easy then, wasn't it?

So, from my personal point of view, do not blame the Japanese for World Wars. Blame the western colonization and the export of so-called political ideology. But then again, like I said, blaming is a useless and endless game.

If they are protesting the 14 men enterred at Yasukuni, then I think they should protest the U.S. President that ordered the atomic bomb on hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians also. If he is in the grave at Arlington National Cemetery, do you think the American would remove him because of Japanese protest? Well, I know he is in his own Truman Library's grave. But, then, again, has the world heard similar protest from Atomic bomb victims?

I read somewhere today that someone suggested that if China and Korea are asking for Japan's apologies, then President Bush should come to apologize at Hiroshima and Nagasaki also. Do you think he could look into the eyes of survivors who still bear horrible scars? See, this is nonsense, childlike stuff. It is endless and useless. I have proved my point. Let bygone be bygone. We have to live in the present and do our best not to make the same mistakes again, that's all.

I don't intend this post to be political. It is just a personal point of view of someone who was brave enough to actually walk the tour of Yasukuni Museum. I think people who protest do it out of fear. Human mind has this fear of the unknown. If they know, they would not protest.

There was a phrase that was repeated over and over again at the end of the movie shown at the beginning of the tour. I cried. Not because of the phrase itself, but because of with everything i saw in the movie. Together with the phrase, it summarizes what Yasukuni stands for very well.

It was an older woman's voice. Could have been a mother of the dead young soldier.

"Watashi tachi wa wasurenai.
Watashi tachi wa wasurenai.
Watashi tachi wa wasurenai...."

("....We would never forget (you)....")

I heard sobs all over the theatre. Rest in peace, brave soldiers who loved their country so much. I have heard your story. I have read your last letter to your beloved mother. I saw your blood-stained uniforms. I understand your devotion, your honor and your selfless sacrifice.

Today, I remember you.

Well, I know I sound a bit philosophical today. But this is exactly how I felt after practicing Chanbara duel session with my sensei without having my contact lenses or glasses on!

When putting on a mask, sensei motioned to me to take out my glasses. Normally I wear my contact lenses, see. But my eyes got painful a few days ago and doc wanted me to have on my glasses for a few more days. I also take this opportunity to prep my eyes for the pre-laser surgery eye-exam.

However, what I did not prepare for at all was the unexpected insight that would occur to me today. At first I was afraid (yeah, like the song "I will survive"!) how I would make it during the duel sesssion because I knew I would have to take off my glasses to put on the protection head gear.

Without my glasses, I would be virtually blinded! I am 450+ shortsighted! Anyway, sensei did not seem to worry. He said it is not important because we use the mind to fight, not the eyes.

Half-believing, fully-scared, I entered the ring to face him.

I have valid reason to be scared. Even with perfect eyesight rendered by my contact lenses, I always got beaten up badly. Last week some knuckles on my left hand was swollen so bad that I had to ask myself many times whether this was just a normal practice-induced injury or am i on my way to be permanently disabled? Many questions came up in my mind, in fact, and for the first time the thought of quitting came up!

But, fortunately, that thought was followed immediately by my determined resolution to try even harder! I'm not going to be a quitter, disabled or otherwise! I must learn how to dodge sensei's formiddable attack and stop being an easy target, once and for all!

Back to the moment of duel yesterday again, with me virtually blinded...

To my amazement, the ultra-blurred vision turned out to work to my advantage! Blimey! (I guess that's what Harry Potte would have exclaimed!) By striving to look beyond my headmask, I discovered something valuable within my mind. I found that I did not have as much fear as I used to have!

I thought it must be something with me taking out the pre-concocted lebel I used to have with the word "Sensei" or the thought of fighting with him. To my blurry eyes, he became just a moving target! Almost like a soft-focus duel sequel in movie, even! I found my mind was at peace easily and that I could proceed to do more things with that peace fo mind.

That meant I dared to attack more, and I could hit sensei more than I have ever done. Not a good hit, but at least I could make bold moves with no fear in my mind. That was one big progress, I think. But that did not mean I would not get hit myself. I still got my regular beaten-up, thanks to my usual mindlessness. I was able to dodge some big blows, but mostly I still got hit. Not brutally, but sensei made sure he showed me every opening I mindlessly left opened. Darned!

I still could not get over my usual problem. I could not think and fight at the same time. And more than that, I could not figure out how to do defense and offense at the same time. Just when I was about to do one thing right, sensei hit me again! For sensei, everything looks so natural. He didn't seem to need to think. And his offense and defense blends into one. I could not figure that one out yet.

Hey, sensei is the grand master. So who am I to complain. I was savoring every minute and was wishing my brain could record sensei's moves into DVD so that i could study again, in slow motion and pause, late.

Well, it's getting late now. May be I'll write more tomorrow. Sensei did train me very hard today in our one-on-one class that I am totally exhausted by now. To tell the truth, today's training was so thorough and intensive as I was the only one and sensei taught me several new things that when I got home tonight I threw up! Just like a first day in cadet school, I read somewhere, where they train you until you throw up. But this is not the only time it happened to me.

But I love my training. I love the way sensei teaches me. He hardly uses his words. But the way he could communicate with me is amazing! In Japanese there is a phrase which expresses this. It is from Buddhism Philosophy. The phrase is "ishindenshin" 以心伝心 or the ability to communicate thoughts or teachings from master to student. It is hard to explain in words here (obviously!), but it sort of feel nice when it happens. To say that I feel "heart-warming" would not be an understatement. My sensei, despite his hard-hitting, is very, very kind and always considerate and thoughtful.

At the end, both the content and the approach of what I learned today from sensei in battou jutsu, jujutsu, and chanbara happens to be the core of Zen Buddhism. This is what I like about sensei. In everything he does or say, we students can always pick up something deep and meaningful to use in our life.

「夢」 Yume - - Dream

I've been postponing handing in my 1st Dan essay for a long time. And so far sensei did not push me. He acknowledged it is difficult.

However, last week he handed me paper with clear instruction on it. So, now it's official. He really wants me to hand in my essay at last.

Here is something similar to what I finally handed over to sensei today. The last question was the most difficult. He simply asked me to describe the present state of mind of someone entering 1st Dan.

So, combing the web, I found what I need, a calligraphy of the character that means "Dream" (Yume).

After placing it strategically in the middle of an empty page, I wrote a simple explanation below. I know it was probably much less than he might have expected. But I was being honest and right to the point.

So, here it is, my answer to sensei.

This is my present state of mind.

まるで夢を見ているみたいです。
(It feels as if I am in the middle of a dream.)

Since childhood, I have always dreamed of getting a black-belt in martial arts, but my mother did not allow me to follow those dreams, fearing that I would get hurt. I accepted that as my Karma.

Now, my life-long dream is in front of me. But instead of grabbing it, I start to have self-doubt.

Self-evaluating, I feel I do not deserve it--yet.

How long does one need to train to be good enough? I don’t know. May be a life time.

Life is like a dream. Nothing is permanent. Nothing.

The best we can do is to try to learn as much as possible from every experience, good or bad, including our mistakes.

Learning Mindfulness the Zen Way

This title may sound misleading, but it's how I feel today.

I just came back from another gruel sword session with sensei. Today was extremely special. Unexpectedly special because I didn't know beforehand that the kids' session would be cancelled. This means I had the 2 hours and a half to myself!

This in turn tranlated to be one of the heaviest training I ever had with sensei. Oh, but how I LOVED it! I got to learn to be mindful of my own body and mind constantly. Both during the battou jutsu session and the intimidating chanbara duel with sensei afterwards.

I started to get used to the sound of my own panting inside the head gear by now. It was not as scary as in the beginning. But one thing remains the same, both my hands are heavily brusies. Well, I just have to put ice packs over them tonight and tomorrow all day again!

Progress? Well, I got to hit sensei several times today. But I think he sort of deliberately made an easy opening for me to try to hit him. Otherwise it would be a sad one-sided affair for the whole session. And I think sensei sensed that I badly wanted to score at least a point to gain some self-confidence after all these bruises.

I mean, I couldn't protect myself against him at all! I couldn't see where his sword was coming from! I got hit all over, my headgear, my arms, my legs, but mostly both my hands. Although sensei made us changed the hand that we hold the sword once or twice during the rounds that we did the duel, it didn't help.

I found out something new about myself, though, that I could handle the sword in my left hand, too. Somewhat faster than my right, even, although not as fast. Interesting. Something I could develop on, I guess. And also I found that the dodging skills I tried to imitate from NHK's boxing training TV show also helped me escape sensei's formiddable head-hit several times! I think the technique is call V-ping or something. Definitely not Weeping! Should practice more on that, too.

Oh, my knuckles hurt! Time to put my hands in the ice bucket! Sigh...now, I really can't see myself going for World Championship, frankly. I was well aware of the fear in my mind during the duel with sensei. And I made a note of that. I must try to go over that mental barrier if I want to make progress. I was afraid of the pain, most of all. But, hey, you can't blame me for that! If you used to duel with the grand master and got injured before, your subconscious mind sort of hold you back, you know.

I must overcome that fear somehow. I was telling myself to think like samurai, using Zen technique, or vipassana technique, they are all the same. That is, only focus on the present. Samurai has no past, no future, only the present. And the present has no pain (yet). So, with that thought, I moved ahead and made daring attacks and was able to score some points against sensei, at last.
So much more to learn. So little time.

At long last, this is the moment I've always been waiting for.

It is the moment of truth.

If you have been following this blog, you would probably know why. I have been musing why my destiny has always brought me back to Japan, my mysterious childhood bonding with ancient Japan and stuff. It always baffled me.

Then out of the blue, I knew.

It was him.

Would he still be waiting for me, smiling as he is in his garden, looking ever so relaxed?

One thing I know for sure, his spirit would still be there. Because it is the very soul of his that has been the driving force of my relentless pursuit of everything that has been precious to him during his life time.

I am going back to finish what he has left. One hundred and three years later, I, one of his perhaps close to hundred great-grandchildren, receive a scholarship to study basically the same thing he had his passion on--Bushido.

Great-Grandpa, one of the first things I would do this time is to this time is to hit Japan's national library to look up your record. I'm going to bring you back to our Kingdom. It has been way long overdue.

Wait for me, great-grandpa. I'm coming over! Thank you for keep smiling. You are my great inspiration!

Would I make it to the World Championship?

This year my life is a little bit weird. I mean, on the positive side! I get to do many things I never, ever dreamed of! Now, as we are approaching mid-year, it gets even more interesting. In fact, it couldn't even get any more interesting when my Sensei casually mentioned to me recently that he actually registered me for the upcoming World Championship Tournament of Channbara in Japan this November!!

Me?? A life-long geek? Going for a World championship title of one of the fastest-paced, weaponed martial arts? You've gotta be kidding!

But sensei was not kidding. In fact, he even told me to prepare a thesis on "Why I Practice Chanbara" and "The State of Mind of the 1st Dan," and submit it to him in a few days' time. But wait a minute, 1st Dan is a...Black Belt!?!

Yes, sensei wants me to try not only for the black belt exam, but for the instructor's exam. And his school is probably the strictest of all sects. This is the first time in my whole life that I hear that you have to write a thesis as a part of black belt exam! And the topic is even more difficult than my Ph.D. dissertation! The State of Mind of someone entering the 1st Dan? Gee, just to think how I would start is sort of difficult already. This ain't gonna be your typical term-paper, believe me!

Today we had a group of visitors from a local school. After session, we wiped the floor of our Dojo together. It was fun but very tiring. But what we got was the feeling of togetherness and unity! And good training for our body, too! It is also a very good way to let off your steam. I also think it trains you well to take care of your home and not minding tedious job. I lost counts how many time I actually fell flat on the floor next to the kindergarten kids because the floor was very slippery. But I simply got up to continue what I had to do. This is a very good training for me!

I'm going to Japan very soon for this Samurai festival before going into Tokyo. And I'm also going to see my advisor at Waseda for the first time! Very excited! He is going to represent Japan in the upcoming World Congress of Sociology in South Africa to present a paper on Social Inequality in Asia.

That's about it for today. I love the day I have my samurai sword training. I wish I could do it everyday. Hey, may be I should consider doing it for a living after I graduate! My dissertation is related to that anyway. Not bad. hmmm.

Another Dream Comes True: So Fast

This must be one of my golden years. I start to lose counts of the blessings I have been receiving this year already. I should remind myself of Lord Buddha's teaching about impermanence. I should also remind myself of my true goal in life, to attain Enlightenment and to get away from it all. Once and for all, and not to return ever again.

Not even it means to enjoy myself and have so much fun as I'm having right now!

Anyway, my next dream that's about to take place in less than two weeks is to go back to 15th century Japan to be part of the samurai army taking part in a battle rehearsal! How awesome! I could not have wanted a better preparation for my upcoming 3-month visit in October for my Ph.D. research on Tokugawa samurai than this. Finally, after training in different type of sword techniques and sword fights for a year and a half, I'll get to be a real samurai!

Now if I could i only find time to brush up on my horse-riding skills before going to Japan this time it would be really perfect.... But, hey, you'd never know. It has been my golden year so far. Anything is possible. And even if i don't get to practice at all, I have a feeling I would be able to communicate with the horse to some degree while i'm there. The usual prayer of giving the loving-kindness (metta) to all creatures always works. I have no doubt about that.

Sensei did not say much about the detail about this visit. But I know he has planned to take us for a duel at our Dojo over there. And many more. I'm really looking forward to that! Oh, living a life of a young samurai in training following a sword teacher around is so much fun! We would also visit the castle of the general whose life inspired the movie, "The Last Samurai." Like I said, what could i ask for more? It's almost i am seeing my dissertation unveiling itself right in front of my eyes! Isn't it nice to be able to literally walk through each chapter and breath in, drinking in everything around you?

However, I couldn't help but taking a sneak preview of what might be on offer there. On the Japanese local government web site, this is what i found.

103 years later, I repeated the task in your honor! The topic of my speech was our destiny--how you and I never met but yet we walked on the same path towards the same dream.

Kissing the Trophy

I guess we all seem to think nothing of it when we see athletes kissing their trophy after winning a tournament. In fact, I would say that we all assume that it is even expected. A rule rather than an exception. A mandatory pose for the press? May be.

I was one of those who used to think like that too, until today, when I lifted up my own trophy to kiss. No, I'm not an athlete and it was not a grand slam tournament I was winning. But, for that very moment, I thought I finally got to understand why those athletes act the way they do.

It was the moment of total exhiliration. I felt so happy beyond words. I could not remember the last time I felt like that. Must be more than 20 years ago when I was in high school when we were winning the national championship quiz? Well, but at that time, I did not get to receive the trophy myself, my school principal did. I only got some kind of pin. But I think the happiness was similar.

And may be that makes today's event even more special. Not that I've never won anything. With other scholarship or student exchange program, you don't get into this kind of competitive environment, and, of course, there was no trophy.

So, after the formalities were done and I was alone on the stage, I must admit that I could not resist the urge of lifting up my trophy to kiss it a la French Open! That drew some laughs from the crowd who did not expect such a scene at the end of a Japanese speech contest!

Now they are having the Trophy engraved with my name and they will let me know later when it is ready. I don't know if anyone caught the moment I was kissing the trophy on camera. Will have to ask them later.

Today's total exhiliration reminds me of two similar lessons. First, from my mother. She told me today after congratulating me on the phone that I should not let success carrying me away, and that I should always remain humbled and grateful to everyone who has helped me come this far, such as the kind teachers who have corrected my speech.

Second, I think about what I used to read while doing literature review for my dissertation. Somewhere I read that a good samurai should always remain humbled and strive to do better all the time and never let the praise carried him away. I must tell my mom some day that she sounds like a samurai's mother all right! hee hee hee Anyway, what i means is that virtues are the same everywhere, the very essence of it.

I will go to meditate in Chiangmai tomorrow for a week. Meanwhile, I will give all my prize money to my mother as I planned earlier. After all, I have come this far in life because of her! And of course, I will dedicate the merit from this meditation retreat in Chiangmai to HM the King also.

Last, but not at all least, I am sure both my great-grandpa and great-great grandpa would be happy today if they were here. I will also dedicate my merit from this meditation retreat to them. I thought a lot about them today. Not only because my speech was about them, but also because I silently asked for their mental support! They were my inspiration related to going to Japan this time, actually. And I guess my prayer was heard...somehow.

Jaa, mina-sama. Go-seichoo, doomo arigatoo gozaimashita!

เมื่อวานนี้ ก็เป็นอีกหนึ่งวันที่ได้ไปเรียน เล่น ซ้อม (และโดนซ้อม) กับเด็ก ๆ โดยหนนี้เซนเซให้เราฝึกคุมเด็ก ออกคำสั่งมากขึ้น พักหลังเซนเซ ซ้อมให้เราหนักดีมาก วันนี้ก็ล่อมาอย่างอ่วม ไม่น่าเอานิ้วก้อยไปอวดตอนก่อนเรียนเลยว่า ของอาทิตย์ที่แล้วยังไม่หายเขียวเลยเซนเซ ปรากฏว่า เลยได้มาอีกสองช้ำใหญ่ หนนี้สองมือเลย คงหายซ่าไปอีกนาน

แต่ก็เป็นอย่างที่เดาเอาไว้นั่นแหละว่า เขาจงใจโหด เพราะวันนี้มีเลคเชอร์ปากเปล่าหลังเรียนจบอีกว่า นี่จะสอบขึ้นสายดำดั้ง ๑ แล้วนะ เพราะฉะนั้น จะออกอาวุธแต่ละครั้ง ต้องเล็งผลให้โดนเป้า ห้ามออกมั่ว เพราะเราเล่นออกแบบหมัดแย็บเก็บคะแนนไง และกะใช้ดาบกวนสายตาเซนเซก่อนตีด้วย ซึ่งเซนเซห้ามใช้วิธีนี้ บอกว่าเป็นวิธีเด็ก ๆ ต้องให้เล่นแบบผู้ใหญ่อย่างเดียว คือนิ่ง ๆ แต่ถ้าจะออกอาวุธเมื่อไหร่ ต้องออกสุดแรงเกิดและต้องตีเข้าเป้าเสียงดังถล่มทลายให้พิการไปข้างนึง อะไรทำนองนั้น แบบให้คู่ต่อสู้ตายในดาบเดียว หรือแขนขาด ขาขาด ตาบอด อะไรเทือกนั้น ในการฟาดไปทีเดียว

ทำให้นึกถึงว่าเคยอ่านเจอในหนังสือที่ค้น ๆ ทำวิทยานิพนธ์นี่แหละ เป็นคำพูดเกี่ยวกับปรัชญาการใช้ดาบของญี่ปุ่น(ที่ต่างกับของจีน) ว่า หนึ่งดาบตัดขาดออกเป็นสองส่วนหรือสามส่วนนี่แหละ ความหมายนัยยะที่ซ่อนไว้ก็คือ การออกดาบแม้นเพียงครั้งเดียวก็ต้องให้ได้ประโยชน์ ไม่งั้นเสียพลังงาน ว่างั้น ทีเดียวต้องให้ได้ตามจุดประสงค์ คือหยุดคู่ต่อสู้ได้สำเร็จ ถ้าไม่ตาย ก็ต้องพิการ ไม่สามารถสู้กับเราได้ต่อไป นั่นคือสถานการณ์ในสนามรบสมัยก่อนน่ะนะ เดาเอา ต้องไปค้นดูใหม่แล้ว เอ...อยู่เล่มไหนนะ รู้สึกจะเล่มของ มูเนโนริ ที่เป็นอาจารย์ดาบของโชกุนโตกุกาว่า คนที่สาม

เซนเซอธิบายหลักการตรงนี้ว่า เขาสอนวิชาการใช้ดาบซามูไร คือ Batttou Jutsu 抜刀術　เป็นหลัก เพราะฉะนั้น เขาต้องการให้เรานำหลักการนั้นมาใช้ตรงนี้ด้วย นั่นก็คือ ทุกสิ่งเกี่ยวกับจิตใจ ขรึม ขลัง หนักแน่น จริงจัง มีปรัชญาแฝง ไม่ใช่อะไรเล่น ๆ ไร้สาระเย้ว ๆ แบบศิลปะป้องกันตัวทั่วไปที่เป็นเรื่องของแพ้ชนะ เพราะวันแรกที่เซนเซใส่หน้ากากมาประลองกับเรานั้น เราบอกเซนเซทีหลังจบคลาสว่า มีอยู่ตอนนึงที่เราอยากทำอย่างในหนังซามูไรที่เซนเซให้เรายืมมาดู นั่นก็คือ ทิ้งดาบลงกับพื้น คุกเข่า แล้วก็บอกว่า ข้าขอยอมแพ้แล้ว อะไรประมาณนัน เพราะตอนที่จรดดาบจะเริ่มต้นยกนั้น เราหาจุดเปิดที่จะโจมตีเซนเซไม่ได้เลย อะไรนั่น เป็นไปได้ไง เขาก็ยืนอยู่เฉย ๆ นิ่ง ๆ แต่ไม่ว่าเราจะพยายามมองตรงไหน เหมือนมันปิดไปหมด จนใจจริง ๆ มันดูเป็นภาพที่หลอนมากเลยน่ะ เราจำความรู้สึกนั้นได้แม่นมากเลย ถ้าใครไม่เคยดวลกับปรมาจารย์ดาบซามูไรที่สามารถทำสภาวะจิตใจระดับนี้ได้ คงยากที่จะเข้าใจว่า เขาปิดจุดโจมตีของเขาด้วย "ใจ" ได้อย่างไร

ตอนหลังเราถามว่าเซนเซทำยังไง เซนเซบอกว่า นั่นแหละ คือ จิตใจที่ไม่ได้อยากจะเอาชนะ เรายกมือเกาหัวแกรก ๆ เลย คือเรารู้ในหลักการน่ะนะ แต่ว่ามันทำยังไงน่ะ เพราะว่าให้ไม่ไปสู้ก็ได้ เราไม่ได้เป็นคนที่ชอบสู้กับใครในชีวิตจริงอยู่แล้ว เราเป็นนักประนีประนอม แต่พอเข้าสังเวียน แล้วบอกให้ไม่อยากเอาชนะนี่น่ะนะ แค่ทำใจให้ฮึกเหิมจะต้องเอาดาบไปตีหัวกบาลใครก็ยากจะตายอยู่แล้ว แถมต้องไปตีหัวครูบาอาจารย์อีก สำหรับคนไทยนิสัย(ค่อนข้าง)สุภาพอย่างเราแล้วทำลำบากมาก แต่พอจะฝึกให้กล้า ๆ หน่อย ก็บอกว่าให้ทำใจให้ไม่อยากชนะอีกแล้ว

ความจริงเราก็เคยอ่านเรื่องนี้มานานแล้ว ในมูซาชิ และอื่น ๆ แต่ว่ามันทำไม่เป็นน่ะ เซนเซบอกว่า ฝึกสมาธิไปนาน ๆ แล้วก็จะเป็นเอง เพราะเซนเซรู้ว่าเราไปเข้าคอร์สวิปัสสนาบ่อย ซึ่งมันก็เหมือนเซนนี่แหละ เซนเซเป็นคนไม่ค่อยสอนมากเป็นคำพูด แต่ชอบให้ลงมือทำ แล้วเข้าใจเอง เป็นอะไรที่ เซ้น เซน และถ้าจะพูด จะไม่พูดเกี่ยวกับร่างกายเลย ซึ่งจะผิดกับการสอนศิลปะป้องกันตัวอื่น ๆ มาก จะพูดเกี่ยวกับสภาวะของจิตใจ และปรัชญาเซนเท่านั้น เช่น การออกดาบในแต่ละช่วง จะทำให้ถูก ต้องทำใจให้เป็นเหมือนทะเลแบบไหน ตอนแรกเป็นทะเลสงบ ตอนฟันเป็นทะเลที่มีสึนามิ ตอนเก็บดาบให้เป็นทะเลสงบอีกครั้ง โห...อย่างนี้จำแม่นเลย ชอบ ๆ (แต่ยังทำไม่ได้ แหะ ๆ)

ทีนี้ กลับมาเรื่องซ้อมคู่กับเซนเซใหม่

เมื่อวาน มันเป็นการเล่นแบบทั้งยก ซึ่งเหนื่อยมากกว่าจะครบยก ทั้ง ๆ ที่ถ้าเป็นดาบจริง ถูกฟาดมาเสียงดังสนั่นหวั่นไหวขนาดนั้น (ขนาดดาบผ้านะนั่น คิดเอาเองว่าการตีแรงขนาดช้ำห้อเลือดได้เป็นอาทิตย์ ๆ แล้วยังไม่หายนี่แรงขนาดไหน) เราคงตายไปแล้วทันที ไม่หัวแบะ ก็แขนขาด แต่เนื่องจากมันไม่ตายทันทีไง มันตายแล้วเกิดใหม่อยู่นั่นแหละ เลยเข้าใจทุกข์ของการเวียนว่ายตายเกิดไปอีกแบบนะ ได้ยินเสียงตัวเองหอบหายใจแรงมากอยู่ในหน้ากากหมวกกันน็อคนั่นแหละ เป็นเสียงที่น่ากลัวนะ เหมือนปฏิบัติธรรมเหมือนกัน ตอนนั่งสมาธิบางทีแล้วสมาธิยิ่งเกินบางทีจะได้ยินเสียงความเงียบ เหมือนวิปัสสนูปกิเลสตัวปัสสธินะ คิดว่า เป็นความสงบ แล้วในความสงบนั้นเราก็ได้ยินเสียงของความเงียบนะ แต่เป็นเสียงที่อยู่ในความสงบ อธิบายไม่ถูก ชอบด้วย ต้องกำหนดว่าชอบหนอ ๆ ไม่เที่ยงหนอ อะไรทำนองนี้ เพราะบางทีติดสุข ติดกับความสงบไปมันจะไม่สามารถก้าวข้ามพ้นไปขั้นปัญญาได้ สมาธิมันจะดึงไปดิ่งลึกเกิน

เรียนสมาธิเคลื่อนไหวแบบเซนมันก็เจ็บปวดอย่างนี้เอง แต่ตอนเอานิ้วก้อยไปอวดเซนเซ ก็รีบบอกว่า ไม่เป็นไรนะ ชอบ เนื่องจากทำให้จำ และเรียนรู้ เซนเซก็ดูจะยิ้ม ๆ ก็เลยสนองนโยบายเสียอ่วม วันนี้ตอนสู้กับเซนเซจิตใจว้าวุ่นกว่าอาทิตย์ที่แล้ว ไม่สามารถตีเซนเซได้เกินหนนึง และไม่แรงด้วย อาทิตย์ที่แล้วยังโดนสองที โดนหน้ากากเซนเซหนึ่งที ดีใจแทบแย่ ยังนึกว่าเซนเซยอมให้เลย คิดว่าน่าจะยอมให้ เพื่อเป็นกำลังใจ และคงให้เด็กอนุบาลญี่ปุ่นที่เซนเซให้เราฝึกสอนอยู่กลัวเรา

วันนี้เราสู้ด้วยใจที่ไม่ฮึกเหิมเท่าหนที่แล้วเพราะจิตใต้สำนึกมันคงกลัวเจ็บ และเซนเซเล่นเอาเบาะมากั้นเป็นแนวเวทีเหมือนเวทีมวยแต่เล็กกว่ามากเพื่อไม่ให้เราเต้นฟุตเวิร์คหนีไปได้ไกลด้วย สงสัยกลัวเราใช้ลูกเล่นแบบนักมวยไทยคือเอะอะก็ตีกรรเชียงหนีไว้ก่อน หนีก็ไม่ได้ ตีก็ไม่โดนเซนเซ แล้วเซนเซก็สืบเท้าต้อนเราเข้ามุมอย่างเดียว จะเหลือเหรอ ตอนหลังเซนเซเห็นมือขวาที่ถือดาบเราท่าทางจะแย่แล้ว ก็เลยออกคำสั่งให้เปลี่ยนมือถือดาบเป็นมือซ้ายแทน คือสำนักเราก็สืบมาจากมูซาชิเหมือนกันนั่นแหละ คือเป็นดาบสองมือก็ได้

แต่ปรากฏว่า พอถือมือซ้าย ก็ใช่ว่าจะรอด มือซ้ายกลับโดนเต็ม ๆ กว่ามือขวา ดาบกระเด็นหลุดจากมือออกนอกเวทีไปเลย ถ้ามีปี๊บก็คงขอยืมมาคลุมหัวเดินออกไปเก็บดาบแล้วล่ะ แต่เซนเซก็ดีนะ ไม่เข้ามาตีซ้ำ ทั้ง ๆ ที่กติกาการแข่งจริงให้เข้ามาตีซ้ำได้ ยังให้เรารีบเก็บดาบกลับมาก่อน แล้วค่อยสู้ต่อ ไม่งั้นมันจะดูเป็นฉากยากูซ่าซ้อมตัวประกันอ้วน ๆ จนเกินไป แล้วเดี๋ยวตัวประกันกระอักเลือดตายก่อนหนังจบไปเสียก่อน

นอกจากนี้ ก็มีช่วงที่อีนุงตุงนังที่เซนเซให้เราฝึกทำทุกอย่างทั้งถือดาบเป็นคู่ซ้อมกับเด็ก ๆ และออกคำสั่งไปด้วย โห...ยังกับจะจำได้หมดน่ะ เซนเซไม่ช่วยด้วย แต่ให้เราถือโพยที่สั่งพิมพ์ไปจากบ้านอ่านได้ เซนเซส่งมาให้เป็นตัวฮิรากานะน่ะ แต่อ่านไปผิดไปอยู่นั่นน่ะ คือไม่มั่นใจเรื่องสำเนียงน่ะหนึ่ง แต่ตัวฮิรากานะจะทำให้เรางงมากกว่าคันจิ เพราะมันเหมือนเป็นโฟเนติกส์ สู้ส่งคันจิมาเลยดีกว่าเซนเซ (แน่ะ ทำซ่าอีกแล้ว) จนน้องหมี(เขาชื่อ คุมะ แปลว่า หมี) ตัวอ้วนแน่น ตากลมโต สูงแค่เอวเรา ที่ซ้อมคู่กับเราในแถว แอบเหลือบตามองขึ้นมาแล้วคอยกระซิบบอกบทเราเป็นระยะ ๆ น่ารักมาก ดีที่เซนเซจับเขาคู่กับเรา เพราะเขาเก่งกว่าคนอื่น และเรื่ยนมานานแล้ว ถ้าเราออกคำสั่งผิด เขาก็จะทำตาโตแล้วสั่นหัวดิ๊ก ๆ ถ้าเราพูดถูกแล้ว เขาก็จะพยักหน้าหงึก ๆ เป็นภาพที่ดูไม่จืดเลย นักศึกษาปริญญาเอกต้องให้เด็กอนุบาล ๕ ขวบสอนบอกว่าต้องพูดยังไงถึงจะถูก เป็นการลดอัตตาตัวตนที่ดีมาก

แต่ลองทำดูบ้างไหมล่ะ มือนึงถือกระดาษเป็นปึ๊งที่เย็บแม็กมาแล้วหลุดออกจากกัน มือนึงถือดาบแล้วต้องคอยตีไปด้วย ตาก็คอยมองว่าเด็กคนอื่นพร้อมหรือยัง แล้วคอยออกเสียงภาษาญี่ปุ่นที่เพิ่งเรียนมาได้ไม่ถึงสองปีดีในคอร์สภาคค่ำให้ถูกตอน แล้วต้องคอยมองน้องหมีคุมะไปด้วย ว่าเขาตีถูกไหม หรือเราตีพลาดไปถูกหัวเขาหรือเปล่า แทนที่จะต้องเป็นการตีดาบเขาที่ยกขึ้นมาเป็นเป้าให้ แล้วมีตอนนึงโพยหลุดจากมือกระจาย น้องคุมะก็วิ่งไปเก็บมาให้อีก โอ๊ย วุ่นวายไปหมด sumimasen เราต้องบอกน้องหมีอ้วนเขา

สรุปว่าวันนี้ตอนเรียนดาบซามูไรเดี่ยว ๆ กับเซนเซทุกอย่างก็สงบเรียบร้อยดี ดูเคร่งขรึมในชุดซามูไร เสื้อขาว กางเกงฮากามะสีดำ คาดดาบที่เอวข้างซ้าย แต่พอเปลี่ยนชุดเป็นชุดเหมือนยูโดแต่สีดำมาเล่นกับเด็ก ๆ เท่านั้น ไหนจะโดนเซนเซซ้อม ไหนจะต้องวิ่งซ้อมกับเด็กปุเลง ๆ ดูแล้วเหมือนอยู่กันคนละโลกเลยแฮะ แต่ก็นั่นแหละนะ ชีวิตคือการเรียนรู้ไม่ใช่หรือ? ne?

วันอาทิตย์ไปเรียน Kenjutsu กับ Jujutsu มา ความจริงยังเจ็บมืออยู่เลยน่ะจากอาทิตย์ที่แล้ว เพราะเป็นการเรียนดาบไม้แบบฟาดกันอย่างแรง ปกติเรียนเดือนละหน แต่เดือนนี้เซนเซมีแถมอีกหน ก็เลยไปเรียน เลยช้ำมากกว่าเก่า แต่เป็นช้ำใน เพราะมองข้างนอกไม่เห็นอะไร แต่แตะไม่ได้เลย สะดุ้งโหยง โห...เลยถึงกับต้องถ่ายรูปมือที่เจ็บแล้วไฮไลท์บริเวณที่ปวดมาก ๆ ส่งอีเมล์ไปถามเซนเซว่าทำไงดี เซนเซก็ดีใจหาย ตอบกลับมาทันทีว่าให้แช่น้ำแข็งทั้งวัน หรือให้นั่งถือไอซ์แพ็ค แล้วถ่ายรูปส่งมาด้วย เป็นไอซ์แพ็คสีเขียวอ่อนดูดีไซน์ขนาดเล็กน่ารักน่าเอ็นดูของญี่ปุ่น สงสัยเซนเซเอาไว้เวลาสอนพวกเด็ก ๆ อนุบาลญี่ปุ่นที่เล่นกับเราวันพฤหัสแน่เลย เออเนอะ คนญี่ปุ่นเขามีอะไรเขาก็อุดหนุนพวกเดียวกันเสมอ ประเทศถึงเจริญ

แต่เมื่อวานเราต้องเตรียมสอนลูกศิษย์เราเหมือนกัน (สอนกม. ไม่ได้สอนดาบ!) เลยไม่ได้นั่งเอามือจุ่มถังน้ำแข็งเป็นหมีขั้วโลกอย่างที่เซนเซสั่ง วันนี้ว่าจะต้องเอาไอซ์แพคมานั่งถือหน่อยแล้ว กลัวเดี๋ยววันพฤหัสเจอเซนเซอีกเปรี้ยงเดี๋ยวมือหักแน่ คราวนี้ไม่ต้องจับดาบกันอีกเป็นเดือน!

รูปมือแสดงบริเวณบาดเจ็บที่ส่งไปให้เซนเซดู จริง ๆ แล้วก็คือบริเวณที่จับด้ามดาบนั่นเอง เป็นความผิดพลาดทางเทคนิคของเราเอง และเซนเซบอกว่าเป็นเรื่องของ consciousness & purpose ตอนจังหวะที่เข้าปะทะด้วย ไม่ใช่แค่เทคนิคการจับด้ามดาบเท่านั้น ดาบไม้ที่เราใช้ซ้อมต่อสู้นั้นจะว่าไปแล้วไม่ใหญ่และหนักเท่าดาบที่ใช้ฝึกสมาธิด้วยซ้ำไป อันนั้นขนาดเท่าใบพายเรือเห็นจะได้ เราแอบเรียกในใจว่า ไซส์มูซาชิ ถ้าใครเคยอ่านเรื่องมูซาชิตอนที่ดวลครั้งสุดท้ายก็คงจะทราบ เพราะว่าพายที่เขามาเหลาใช้แทนดาบนั้นยาวกว่าดาบคู่แข่งที่ได้ชื่อว่ายาวที่สุดในวงการตอนนั้นอีกด้วยซ้ำ คิดเอาเองว่าจะหนักขนาดไหน!

แต่เราว่าเป็นเพราะดาบเบาและเล็กนี่แหละ เลยทำให้แรงปะทะมาเข้ามือเราเต็ม ๆ เลย เนื้อไม้ไม่สามารถ absorb แรงเอาไว้ได้ นี่แหละที่จะทำให้กระดูกมือหักเอา เพราะนี่หลายวันแล้วยังเจ็บอยู่เลย ถ้าพรุ่งนี้ไม่หายสงสัยต้องไปเอ๊กซเรย์ เพราะกดแล้วเจ็บ แต่มองด้วยตาเปล่าไม่เห็น หรือจะต้องไปหาน้ำใบบัวบกมากินเนี่ย?

นี่คือรูปเจลไอซ์แพคของญี่ปุ่นที่เซนเซส่งมาให้ดู บอกว่าให้ไปนั่งถือทั้งวันจนกว่ามือจะหายเจ็บ ซึ่งความจริงแล้วเจ็บทั้งสองมือ เพราะดาบซามูไรจังหวะที่หวดมือที่ออกแรงจริง ๆ จะเป็นมือซ้ายในขณะที่มือขวาแค่บังคับทิศทาง คล้าย ๆ กับไดรฟ์กอล์ฟ (มิน่าคนญี่ปุ่นถึงชอบตีกอล์ฟ เกี่ยวไหมเนี่ย) แต่ที่ถูกที่สุดคือไม่ใช่แรงจากมือหรือแขนเลย แต่ต้องใช้กำลังภายในจากร่างกาย และจิตใจเท่านั้น ซึ่งเซนเซสอนกี่ทีเราก็ยังทำไม่ได้ ว่าแต่ว่า ไอซ์แพคอันเนี้ย....เวลาไปสอนกม.นิสิตจะให้ถือเจลนี่ไปกำสองมือแบบถือดาบด้วยเนี่ยนะเซนเซ แหะ ๆ

My Great, Great-Grandpa!

Not long ago, I wrote about destiny.

Well, rather, I mused about it.

I wonder what made me keep going back to Japan.

Now I know (more).

It is him. :)

In this picture is my great, great grand father, Phya Visutsakorndit (Sai Jotikasthira). In one of his various posts during his service to King Rama the V, he was sent as a Royal Envoy of Siam Court to Imperial Japan. In the year Meiji 36, my great, great grand pa set sail with his son, my future great grand pa, Major Luang Jarunrittikrai, then probably a young teenager, to Japan.

This link would lead you to the news about both of them that I found two nights ago from the web site of Japanese Embassy in Thailand. Imagine the pleasant surprise (and shock!) to find out about your ancestors this way! Luang Jarunrittikrai is the father of my paternal grandmother. But she never talked much about her father or her grand father. And I grew up more with my mother's side of family, so I never knew.

But, now, I know why I enjoyed studying diplomacy as a master's degree! And now I know I always fond of the old Japan. Moreover, now I know why my Ph.D. is gearing more and more towards Bushido! It is because my great grandpa used to graduate from both the cadet school and the army college (sort of their graduate degree)!

I only found all these out recently, well after my dissertation is already in progress and I already got the scholarship to go to Japan myself.

Now, ladies and gentlemen, if this is not destiny, then, what is? If you think this kind of things do not run in the blood, well, I invite you to think again. It is truly amazing that I find out about them this way. But what a moral boost for a tiring graduate student! :)

And what a benchmark, too! Now I would have to give all my best not to disappoint them. But with his smiling to me like that, I know I could do it! Right, Great, Great-Grandpa? :)

Isn't it fitting that the nickname my mother gave me is "baby bear" and finally I'm going to school with a bear as a mascot? hee hee hee Go Go Waseda! :)

WASEDA UNIVERSITY -Waseda Episodes: "WASEDA BEAR"

Waseda University wanted to select a new mascot, a character that could gain the affection and attachment of people of every generation. It would replace 'Fuku-chan', symbolize our 'second century' and stand for the appeal of a newly-born Waseda both inside and outside of the University. We approached professionals such as designers and cartoonists, mainly from our alumni and received about 60 candidate works.

A 14-member selection committee selected a final three candidates. We then conducted a survey on these three candidates among students, alumni, staff and others using postcards and e-mails. Our Executive Board finally selected the work of comic book writer Kenshi Hirokane (Graduate of the School of Law 1970) together with the name 'WASEDA BEAR'.

The new mascot 'WASEDA BEAR' was official unveiled at the Homecoming Ceremony on October 22, 2000. By courtesy of Mr. Hirokane, all rights relating to the mascot character 'WASEDA BEAR' belong to the University. Going forward, we expect 'WASEDA BEAR' to be used widely in the University's various advertising media and web pages, in commemorative events and in the form of branded merchandise"
