1. Se dice que una oración está en VOZ ACTIVA cuando la significación del verbo es producida por la persona gramatical a quien aquél se refiere:
Shakespeare wrote Hamlet.
(Shakespeare escribió Hamlet).

2. Se dice que una oración está en VOZ PASIVA cuando la significación del verbo es recibida por la persona gramatical a quien aquél se refiere:
Hamlet was written by Shakespeare.
(Hamlet fue escrito por Shakespeare).

3. Se forma con el auxiliar del verbo to be y el participio pasado del verbo que se conjuga, si el verbo es irregular estamos hablando de la 3ª columna.

4. El complemento de la oración activa pasa a sujeto de la pasiva. Como en castellano, el sujeto de la activa se puede conservar como sujeto agente.

5. Cuando un verbo tiene dos complementos se pueden hacer dos estructuras de pasiva:
a) A book was sent to Tom by Mr. Smith, Un libro fue enviado a Tom por Mr. Smith.
b) Tom was sent a book by Mr. Smith (pasiva idiomática). Esta estructura no es posible en castellano.

VOZ ACTIVA Y PASIVA: REGLAS PRACTICAS

1. La voz pasiva se forma con el verbo to be conjugado más el participio del verbo principal. En inglés es mucho más frecuente que en español y, normalmente, aparece cuando no es importante quien realiza una acción sino el hecho en sí. Por eso, no siempre que veamos una pasiva, tenemos que traducirlo literalmente, puesto que en español suena más forzado. Sólo es posible el uso de la voz pasiva con verbos transitivos (verbos que llevan complemento directo).

2. El sujeto agente se expresa con by. Sin embargo, en la mayoría de las ocasiones se prescinde del sujeto ya que no nos interesa saber quién exactamente ejecuta la acción. Si una oración activa tiene complemento directo e indirecto, cualquiera de los dos complementos puede ser sujeto paciente de la pasiva:

ACTIVE: Someone gives me a dog
PASSIVE 1: A dog is given to me
PASSIVE 2: I am given a dog (forma pasiva idiomática)

PASSIVE VOICE

Use of Passive

Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing the action.

Example: My bike was stolen.

In the example above, the focus is on the fact that my bike was stolen. I do not know, however, who did it.

Sometimes a statement in passive is more polite than active voice, as the following example shows:

Example: A mistake was made.

In this case, I focus on the fact that a mistake was made, but I do not blame anyone (e.g. You have made a mistake.).

Form of Passive

Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle (3rd column of irregular verbs)

Example: A letter was written.

When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the following:

the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence
the finite form of the verb is changed (to be + past participle)
the subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence (or is dropped)

MACBETH

The play opens with Macbeth and Banquo, two of the Scottish King Duncan's generals returning from battle when they encounter three witches in the woods. The witches tell Macbeth of how he will become the Thane of Cawdor and then the King of Scotland. For Banquo, they prophesize that he will beget the line of Scottish Kings, though he will never become king himself. The two are sufficiently skeptical and continue their journey home. The play opens with Macbeth and Banquo, two of the Scottish King Duncan's generals returning from battle when they encounter three witches in the woods. The witches tell Macbeth of how he will become the Thane of Cawdor and then the King of Scotland. For Banquo, they prophesize that he will beget the line of Scottish Kings, though he will never become king himself. The two are sufficiently skeptical and continue their journey home.

However, when the two come closer to the encampment, they are presented with a messenger from King Duncan who announces that Macbeth has been made the Thane of Cawdor, immediately putting the prophecy into perspective, making Macbeth wonder how he might become king. He invites Duncan to dine at his castle that evening and goes ahead to tell his wife of the day's events.

Unlike Macbeth, Lady Macbeth is very sure of her husband's future, desiring the throne and telling him that they must murder Duncan to ensure his ascension. Immediately upon returning to his castle, Lady Macbeth is able to convince her husband to take initiative and murder Duncan that very night.

The two plan to get Duncan's chamberlains drunk enough that they will not remember the evening and blame them for the murder. When the body of Duncan is discovered in the morning, Macbeth quickly kills the "culprits" and assumes the kingship. All the while, Duncan's sons flee the country, afraid for their own lives.

Immediately, Macbeth's misgivings and trust in the prophecies force his hand in the murder of Banquo and his son Fleance as well, afraid that his heirs will seize the throne. Successfully killing Banquo, the murderers fail to kill Fleance.

The night of his murder, Banquo's ghost appears to Macbeth and sends him into hysteria, scaring his guests and angering his wife. His very presence as the king of Scotland has angered the other nobles and further incites Macbeth's misgivings and paranoia.

To ease his fears, he visits the witches again and they offer to him more prophecies. He must beware ofMacduff, a chief opponent to Macbeth taking the throne. He cannot be harmed by any man born of woman and he is safe until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane Castle. He returns home and finds that Macduff has fled to England to join Malcolm. In fear, Macbeth seizes Macduff's castle and orders the murder of his wife and children, inciting Macduff to further rage. With Malcolm, the two raise an army and ride to Scotland to take on Macbeth with the support of the Scottish nobles who fear Macbeth's tyranny and murderous ways.

While Macbeth awaits his opponents, Lady Macbeth is in the process of going mad, unable to wash the blood from her hands. The news of her suicide reaches Macbeth directly before the arrival of the English forces and sends him into an even deeper despair. He awaits confidently as the prophecy foretold his invulnerability. However, Macduff's forces arrive under the cover of boughs cut from Birnam wood. When Macbeth is finally confronted by Macduff after his forces have been overwhelmed, Macduff announces that he was "ripped from his mother's womb" not born and ultimately defeats and beheads Macbeth, handing the crown back to Malcolm, the rightful heir.

The first conditional has the present simple after 'if', then the future simple in the other clause:

if + present simple, ... will + infinitive

It's used to talk about things which might happen in the future. Of course, we can't know what will happen in the future, but this describes possible things, which could easily come true.

If it rains, I won't go to the park.
If I study today, I'll go to the party tonight.
If I have enough money, I'll buy some new shoes.
She'll be late if the train is delayed.
She'll miss the bus if she doesn't leave soon.

Rachel es una de las mejores Youtubers que existen hoy en día para mejorar la pronunciación en inglés americano.

Tiene una web súper bien organizada por categorías de sonidos vocálicos, consonánticos, ritmo, entonación, etc.

Sus más de 400 vídeos gratuitos sin duda alguna te ayudarán a pronunciar muchísimo mejor en inglés americano, sin dejar de lado los conceptos básicos de la pronunciación y la fonética inglesa.

2. BBC Learning English

Una web muy clara y pulida con un montón de recursos interesantes que incluyen audio.

Ofrecen un montón de quizzes para repasar todo lo aprendido.

Es sin duda una website fundamental para aprender inglés como lengua extranjera.

3. Spoken Skills

Una de las webs más completas para mejorar la pronunciación en inglés.

Cuenta con cientos de recursos tanto para el estudiante de inglés como para el profe, pero en a lo que a pronunciación se refiere, destacan sobre todo en el hecho de que tú mismo te puedes grabar y oírte, por lo que puedes comparar tu pronunciación con la de la frase original.

También cuentan con ejercicios y quizzes varios sobre entonación y pronunciación de vocales y consonantes.

4. Cambridge English Online

La sección de fonética de Cambridge English, es una de las más eficaces e interesantes del mercado. Con un diseño súper dinámico y divertido, consiguen que el alumno se sienta “atraído” por la fonética del inglés…sí, ya sé que parece raro, pero esta gente sabe lo que hace

Tienen un montón de recursos en plan juegos que te guiarán para aprenderte el “phonemic chart” de una manera muy amena.

Casi sin darte cuenta serás capaz de descifrar los símbolos fonéticos bien jugando al “colgado” o con una tabla fonémica interactiva.

5. EslPod

Este es una web de Podcasts súper popular y útil para todos los que estudiantes que tienen la intención de mejorar la pronunciación en inglés.

La verdad es que el diseño de la web no es de los más bonitas que he visto, pero ¿qué importa eso realmente si lo que nos interesa es que los podcasts sean interesante y que nos enseñen a pronunciar mejor?

El éxito de estos podcasts radica en la claridad y “lentitud” con al que pronuncian las palabras, con una vocalización especialmente adaptada a estudiantes de un nivel no demasiado avanzado de inglés.

6. Forvo

Esta web es realmente interesante y práctica para escuchar y aprender a distinguir los diferentes sonidos del inglés pronunciados en diferentes acentos.

Es muy importante observar los diferentes acentos porque no sólo existen diferencias entre el acento americano, británico o australiano, etc…en cada país también hay diferencias regionales: en EEUU nos encontramos con el acento californiano, o el de Boston, de la misma manera que en el Reino Unido puedes encontrar el acento Cockney, el de Manchester, el de Glasgow, etc…

Con esta web/diccionario solo tienes que escribir la palabra que quieres escuchar, buscar el acento que más te interese y darle al play, easy peasy

7. English Pronunciation Lab

Heather Hansen propone un montón de vídeos interesantes para aprender a pronunciar en inglés correctamente. Me encanta sobre todo su sección “How to Pronounce…”.

En esa sección te ofrece un montón de truquillos de cómo pronunciar ciertas palabras que suelen crear más confusión a los que queremos mejorar nuestra pronunciación.

Por ejemplo, tiene vídeos cortos del estilo “How to Pronounce: “interesting”, “refrigerator”.

También podemos encontrar un montón de tácticas y estrategias para aprender a hablar más clara y fluidamente.

8. Sounds of English

Esta web proporciona una guía genial en cómo pronunciar diferentes sonidos del inglés.

Los sonidos están presentados en parejas de palabras ‘contrastivas’ (minimal pairs) tipo heat vs hito hoot vs hood.

Cuando pinchas en cada pareja de palabras, encuentras una súper descripción de cómo se produce ese sonido en particular además de un vídeo y archivos de sonido para cada uno.

9. Lyrics Training

Esta es una página web absolutamente genial para aprender inglés a través de la música y de tus canciones favoritas.

Si estás empecinado en aprender inglés y te apasiona la música, esta página te va a encantar. ya que te ayuda a aprender inglés a través de las letras (lyrics) de canciones.

Podrás elegir entre miles de canciones, antiguas o modernas, heavy, rock o melódicas, baladas o ‘bailonas’…whatever you like!

Solo tienes que elegir la canción que te interese y, una vez seleccionada, te piden que elijas en qué nivel quieres “jugar”: principiante, intermedio, avanzado o experto.

El grado de dificultad radica en el número de palabras a rellenar al azar. Por ejemplo, en el principiante debes rellenar un 10% de las palabras de la canción, es decir 32 palabras de 318 de, por ejemplo, la canción Hello de Adele. Si optaras por el nivel avanzado de esa misma canción, deberías rellenar 159 palabras de un total de 318.

10. Italki

Qué mejor manera de mejorar la pronunciación en inglés que tener un profe que te corrija esos pequeños fallos. No solo es importante escuchar la pronunciación en vivo (con el connected speech en directo). sino también practicar las palabras pronunciándolas tú mismo.

En este contexto también es más fácil recordar el significado de las palabras, cómo y en qué situaciones/frase usarlas y al mismo tiempo, a pronunciarlas correctamente.

SANFERMIN GIANTS AND BIGHEADS

HISTORY

According to a rather obscure tradition, during the procession of San Fermín in 1276, three Giants, called, Peru Suziales, Mari Suziales, his wife, and one called Jusef Lukurari (" The Usurer") - a personification of the popular repulsion against the Jews at that time, - were paraded dancing through the streets.

But the first authentic references to The Giants in San Fermin date from the beginning of the XVII century; in 1607 one Joanes de Azcona is named as being responsible for bringing out the assemblage of Giants along with a minstrel who was responsible for providing the accompanying music. In 1620 it is recorded that a carpenter, Joan de Torrobas, was paid 88 "reales" to mend four Giants.

It was the custom around that time to parade Giants in the evenings, after the bullfights, which were adorned with crackers and fireworks,(not unlike the present-day mechanical contrivance of the "Torch Bull" borne by a human) and which were frolicked around the square, before eventually ending up on the bonfire.

This practice of having Giants in the celebrations continued through the greater part of the XVIII century, until in 1780, The King, Carlos III, banned " the use of dancing Giants for leading any religious processions inside or outside all churches within this Kingdom" (by Royal Decree of tenth of July, 1780) which put a stop to the use of any Giants during the San Fermin celebrations. The Giants which had belonged to the Town Hall disappeared without any further trace while the Giants which belonged to the Cathedral were stored away and forgotten about, until 1813 when they were discovered by a carpenter who revived the old tradition by bringing them out once again into the streets. The response was so enthusiastic that The Town Hall gradually built up their own collection of Giants, along with accompanying figures such as the Zaldikos, Kilikis, and Cabezudos.

The Giants that are presently in use date from 1860 and were made by one Tadeo Amorena, a local painter from Pamplona. He presented a scheme to the Town Hall in March of that year to built four new Giants which would represent the "four corners of the world" and which would be more durable and yet lighter than the old ones. A local poet- one Ignacio Baleztena- couldn't help but write some caustic lines on the fact that :

"It seems poor Tadeo had never heard tell of The Oceanic Continent".

The present cabezudos in use were built in 1890 by one Félix Flores. Some of kilikis and zaldikos are from the last century while the rest date from this century.

SAN FERMIN 6th - 14th JULY

Sanfermin

The festival of Sanfermín (or Sanfermines) in the city of Pamplona (Navarre, Spain), is a deeply rooted celebration held annually from 12:00, 6 July, when the opening of the fiesta is marked by setting off the pyrotechnic txupinazo, to midnight 14 July, with the singing of the Pobre de Mí.

Sanfermin is internationally known for the event of the running of the bulls, where the bulls are let loose through some of the streets of the old part of the city. The runnings of the bulls take place from the 7th of July to the 14th of July inclusive at 8.00 am in the morning. At midday on the 6th of July the fiestas open with the txupinazo rocket. That day there is no running of the bulls but there sure is a lot of partying. It was thanks to the writing of American writer Ernest Hemingway that San Fermin developed the notoriety of today. The publication of his novel "The Sun Also Rises" in 1926 told the world about the Pamplona bull running festival which attracted people from all over the world to this annual festival.

The fiestas are celebrated in honor of Saint Fermin, patron of Navarra, and both the religious elements and the wild partying elements live out the fiestas in good harmony.

The Txupinazo VIDEO 2014

The explosion of the fireworks rocket at midday on the 6th of July is the signal for the start of nine days of non-stop partying. This moment is marked by a rocket - the "Txupinazo" - which is set off to announce the start of the Fiesta.

Riau Riau

On the 6th of July, at 4.30 in the afternoon, Sanfermin tradition dictates that everyone should gather for the riau-riau. Nowadays, the motivation is rather different to the original reason.

The municipal band, "La Pamplonesa" played a set piece of music "el Valls de Astráin" and the people danced, sang, drank and blocked the route for as long as possible.

Procession

The 7th of July, at 10.00 am on the day, the procession of Saint Fermin leaves from the church of San Lorenzo. The route is jam-packed with crowds who want to see the image of the saint and the entourage that accompany the figure of the saint.

The corrida or bullfight during San Fermin is very different to bullfights in any other big bullring in Spain or anywhere else. For the simple reason that it is something more than just a bullfight.

At midnight on the 14 th July the fiesta formally closes with the ceremony called the "Pobre de Mí."

Independence Day in the United States is also known as the Fourth of July. It is a national holiday that commemorates the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. This was the day the USA was born and became independent from Great Britain. The terms “Independence Day” and the “Fourth of July” are a well-known part of the USA’s cultural language. People celebrate with national pride. There are fireworks, parades, sporting events and lots more. It is one of the biggest days on America’s holiday calendar. Politicians make speeches celebrating America’s history and traditions. In particular, attention turns to Thomas Jefferson’s speech that declared the United States of America as an independent nation.

Independence Day is a red, white and blue affair. The whole of the country displays American flags and banners. There are many festivals that enact famous events from America’s history. It is also a day when the nation gets outdoors. Picnics and barbecues with family and friends are the most popular ways to celebrate. In the evening, there are thousands of fireworks displays across the country. One of the most popular is the Macy’s department store show on New York’s East River. This is televised nationwide by the NBC TV channel. Also in New York, you can witness the Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island. Indeed, American food is of course a big part of the day and millions of hot dogs, burgers and pizzas are eaten.
