Gamer++ Has a New Template

I decided I'd update the blog's template. The new template has issues with the older posts. There are pictures and videos popping out of their proper places and theGAMER++ graphic at the top of the blog can't be centered in the new template and the template editor won't allow me to use two text colors the way I just did in this blog post. I'll be looking for a fix for that problem.

Cheating at Wizards & Warriors

Several days ago I started playing Wizards & Warriors for NES. First I got tired of dying and restarting and then I got tired of scrounging for Gems. So I decided I'd cheat. Although the LIFE and Gems cheats are the only cheats you should need, I found a few more. In the picture above you can see I have equipped Kuros from the very beginning of his journey.

I have tried these cheats on FCEU and FCEUX. I recommend you use FCEU. If you use FCEUX instead, expect the game to glitch beyond playability.

ADDRESS	VALUE	ITEM	DESCRIPTION
0076	012	LIFE	You want a strong Kuros, right? Use this cheat and Kuros doesn't take damage. You will want to toggle this off once you defeated a boss and then toggle it back on when you start the next level.
0077	003	LIVES	If you still want your Kuros to take damage and die, but you don't want to see the continue screen, I've got just the thing for you! Use this code to start with 3 lives and keep three lives.
0078	005	Wand of Wonder	This wand can freeze enemies for a couple seconds. I recommend using the boots of force or staff of power instead.
0078	006	Cloak of Darkness	It turns Kuros invisible! Scratch that, it makes Kuros pitch black with little sparkles around the blackness. You may have trouble seeing Kuros against a black background, but the enemies have no trouble finding him. This is a novelty at best.
0078	007	Boots of Force	I love these boots! They let you kick open even the toughest treasure chests.
0078	008 or 009	Boots of Lava Walk	You'd think that with a name like "Boots of Lava Walk" that you could use them to walk on lava without damage. Instead of that, they allow Kuros to ride around on that crazy pillar of flame in the fire cave. I forget the exact value for this item, but if you're using the invincible cheat above, you don't really need these silly boots anyway.
0078	010	Horn	Use the horn to find hidden rooms. The horn comes in handy in the purple caves.
0078	011	Map	You read about it in the instruction book and now you can use it at last! Use the map to see where in the world Kuros is.
0078	012	Staff of Power	This is a mighty blasting rod indeed!
006B	001	Knife of Throwing	OK projectile, but I like the axe myself.
006B + 062F	001 + 001	Axe of Agor	My favorite projectile weapon!
062C	001	Shield	The shield deflects projectiles.
062D	001	Feather	Press up when Kuros falls and he will fall slower. Handy for reaching platforms that are far away.
062E	001	Potion of Levitation	Press up and Kuros floats up in the air a little bit. Kuros can jump while levitating, allowing him to reach platforms he couldn't get to before.
0630	001	Blue Key	Blue Key allows Kuros to open blue chests and doors. As with the LIFE cheat and the other keys, this should be toggled off for boss battles
0631	001	Red Key
0632	002	Pink Key
0658	006	Damsels	I have really filtered out a lot of cheats and this one should probably be left off the list, but here it is anyway. Use this cheat and the game ends when you save the first damsel. Want to know what happens if you set the value to 007? Find out!

If I didn't cover the cheat you were looking for, you might have to find it yourself. I'm done with Wizards & Warriors for a while.

Stopped by Goodwill and found a cartridge with Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, and World Class Track Meet. There was a short stack of carts with SMB or SMB/Duck Hunt, but this is the only one with three games. I know it isn't worth the $2.99 I spent for it, but it was so shiny, and it's the only NES cart I have with 3 games on it, so I bought it.

I was just googling for pictures of The Sega Control Stick (it's come to me looking at pics of other people's consoles and controllers, folks) when I came across Ninjabearhug's Big Games Hunt. This is the most complete Sega collection I have seen. Everything from the Master System to Dreamcast. I'm now going back to look at his pics.

Another Goodwill visit today. I found Vindicators for NES and Tell Me Why One for CD-i.

I also found two Sega Control Sticks. The sticks are for the Sega Master System, but the boxes (both are in their boxes with polystyrene) say they are also compatible with Commodore VIC-20, C-64, Atari 400, 800, and 2600.

I made a random run to Goodwill today. I was just in time to see a man walk away from the shelf with a handful of NES cartridges (one of them gold), saying emphatically to his wife, "No, I NEED these. I NEED them..." Man, I know that conversation from somewhere. Left behind were a half dozen SMB and SMB/Duck Hunt cartridges, some aerobics game requiring a dance pad (the thing looked untouched after all of these years).

Next to the cartridges was a stack of shovelware, card games, and encyclopedias on disc. I was about to leave when I saw the CD-i logo. Pulling the game out I saw it was Link: The Faces of Evil. For just $3.99, I couldn't resist.

Before leaving I also found Cityfight for Warhammer 40,000. Cityfight is what you might think, it shows how to play Warhammer 40,000 centered around city fights. It gives new rules and shows how to modify core rules for Cityfight. There are also instructions for cityscaping (bust out the polystyrene and model paint).

I just went to google to sign in and found what looked like another google doodle. It looks like Pac-Man with the word Google spelled out in the maze. Then the doodle starts moving and making sound. I press the arrow keys... It's Pac-Man on Google. What a great surprise.

Turns out Pac-Man is on google to celebrate 30 years of Pac-Man. Wait, that can't be! I remember when Pac-Man came out! And I got the little Chomp-Man mini arcade game. What awesome times.

Good Day at Goodwill

It's Sunday. I usually don't do anything on Sundays, but today I stopped by Goodwill. It was freaky. There was hardly anything on the shelves. Huge empty spaces between busted toasters. It's not at all like the usual precariously stacked mixture of telephones, drills, and appliances without cords. But over with the VHS tapes there were stacks of cool old PC and Dreamcast games.

I picked through and decided on just three Dreamcast games: Crazy Taxi, Crazy Taxi 2, and Star Wars Episode 1 Racer ($1.99 each).
There were also some Sega Genesis and SNES games. I only chose to buy Scooby Doo Mystery and Bill Walsh College Football '95 (99 cents each).

Checking the wall they normally hang the power cords on I found a PlayStation PiranhaPad ($2.99) and a NES RF switch ($1.99).
On the way out I found something really cool. Autodesk 3D Studio release 4. It's complete with all the books, disks, and even the hardware lock. Looks like they didn't even touch the books. Only $12.99. This is the version I used in college. I still have the text books to go with the software.

There was so much good stuff at Goodwill today that I put back more than half of what I had originally grabbed. Maybe I should visit on Sundays more often.

Zelda Dungeon has started (actually re-doing) their video walkthrough of Adventure of Link on NES. The walkthrough with text and pictures can be found HERE. I'm looking forward to this new walkthrough. Adventure of Link is one of those games I really wanted to complete, but I never could.

Goodwill Thursday 02/04/2010: C64 Batman the Caped Crusader, HardBall, and Top Gun

After a long break from the thrift stores I decided to hit Goodwill again today. I found some C64 games.

The first thing that caught my eye was Batman the Caped Crusader. It's brand new and in its box. There's a tiny nick in the plastic wrap, but other than that it's just like it came off the rack in '88.

Next I found Top Gun. The box is a bit squished and the plastic wrap is really damaged.

The third C64 game I found is HardBall! by Accolade. The top of the box is a bit crushed, but still acceptable and the plastic wrap is still in perfect shape.

Each game cost 99 cents.

I also got a NES controller for $1.99. It looks unused.

In the Mail: Ultima: Exodus (NES)

On December 19 I asked a seller if it would be OK if I paid for a game and they could wait for ten days or so to send it so that the people at the UPS store don't send it to the post office who keep it for a couple days and then send it back (it's happened before). The seller actually said to press the "Buy it Now" button and then just pay when I'm ready to have the game shipped. So I did just that.

On the morning of the 29th I finally paid for the game while I was in Rochester. A few hours ago I arrived back home and checked the UPS store. The game got in this morning! It arrived in a sturdy box.
Inside... Ultima: Exodus!
This was the first game I ever bought with my own money. I had just gotten my first paycheck and it was just enough for one awesome game and lunch at A&W. Money well spent. I don't know what ever happened to that game, but now I have it again. OK, I have two other copies of the game, but this one has the box, dust sleeve... everything.

The Ultima games on the NES are among my favorite games ever. Playing and beating Ultima: Exodus was one of the most satisfying gaming experiences of my high school years.

In the Mail: Shadowrun for SNES

Recently I ordered Shadowrun (for SNES) from a seller on eBay (heswall2) for the price of $22.95 and no shipping fee! It only took two or three days to arrive. That was earlier today. Or maybe it's yesterday... I don't know how long I've been up.

Anyway, here's the packaging it was shipped in. Manilla envelope with clear tape:

Overall I am happy with this transaction. I'm not sure if the bends in the box were there before shipping or occurred during shipping, but right now this is the star of my SNES collection.

Not much at Goodwill this week. Looks like someone else is hitting the store and collecting just about everything. I suspect it's the guys at the new/retro gaming store. The mint gameboy colors didn't even make it a day on the shelves and all the playstation games are gone. Even the bad ones.

It wasn't a complete loss though. I walked away with a Tekken 4 Fighting Stick (ST-607) and a PlayStation RFU adaptor.

All I Really Need to Know I Learned From Playing Video Games

A long while back there was this book called All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. When I saw the book I thought "That's silly, I learn valuable lessons all the time in video games." I decided to make my own book called "All I Really Need to Know I Learned From Playing Video Games". Every now and then I'd play a game and write down another important lesson.

I lost the list a few years ago and haven't thought about it in a long time. But a few minutes ago I stumbled upon Gaming After 40. The article I just linked to is called "Video Game Life Lessons" and is very similar to what I had in mind. Of course he's got some different lessons, like

Shoot zombies in the head when possible, stab them if they get too close.

But I see one lesson that looks familiar:

Talk to everyone you meet. They might know something you don't.

I worked at a coffee shop for a few years. Each day a couple ladies came through about lunch time and one of them ordered an iced cafe mocha. As the person behind the counter was saying "hello" she would make a point of plowing right on over them in a condescending tone with a long list of demands about her "cafe mocha" including how she wanted "four shots of espresso and NOT that premixed crap in the refrigerator!". Most days an attempt was made to explain the difference between a cafe mocha and an espresso mocha... always rudely dismissed mid-sentence with a snotty tone.

Things went on like this, with slight variations and occasional outbursts for more than two years. Then one day these fine, sophisticated ladies had just finished making their order and stepped in front of everyone at the pickup site. Luckily I had heard them in line and was bringing their drinks right to them (after a few hundred visits you learn what works best). As I was setting the drinks down someone at the order board leaned toward the counter and asked politely, "Excuse me, I'm new to this stuff. What's the difference between an iced cafe mocha and an iced espresso mocha."

A smile came over my face as I responded, " I'm very glad you asked. An iced espresso mocha is milk, chocolate, and hot espresso. An iced cafe mocha is chocolate milk made with Guittard Old Dutch chocolate and an amazing cold pressed coffee that takes almost two weeks to make."

Immediately I hear a shrill voice. "Why didn't you tell me that?"

I calmly answered, "Because, in more than two years this is the most you've allowed me to speak and possibly the only time you've shown the ability to listen. I did make several hundred prior attempts though, if that helps my case any."

I swear there was dead silence in the mall for the few seconds it took the ladies to pick up their drinks and leave, never to be seen again.

Anyway, the ladies in my story could have avoided what was likely a lifetime of uncomfortable situations, struggle, and strife if they were only given a few wholesome games as a child and carried away two lessons:

Read all signs. Someone took the time to make and erect a sign so they would not have to answer the same questions over and over again.

Talk to AND listen to everyone. Your life will be richer, easier, and more enjoyable if you simply converse with other people respectfully. Repeat often.

More Goodwill Goodness

I went back to Goodwill and bought three more SNES games. I now have Spawn, Dr. Franken, and Madden '96. I also bought a nice steampunk anthology called "Extraordinary Engines". This all set me back $3.48.

Hit Goodwill today. On the shelf where I previously found an abused PlayStation I discovered a Super Nintendo. Nearby, jumbled up in random power adapters I found a controller. On the back wall with all the cords and connectors I found an RF switch and SNES adapter. All together this console cost me $15. It still needs to be cleaned and tested, but I have high hopes. The cord to the controller looks like it was once caught in a drawer, but even if it's damaged I'm confident I can fix it.

Believe it or not, this is my first SNES. Of course I've played Super Nintendos before, but they weren't MINE. Friends, family, room-mates, video store rental... all that SNES gameplay and never on a system of my own. I'll say it again, I love Goodwill.

Over with the VHS tapes I found a stack of about 15 games for $1.99 each. Since I have limited resources right now I only picked out 4 games. Now my SNES game collection is Jurassic Park, Mortal Kombat (just had to get this), Tin Star, and F-Zero. Of course, Mortal Kombat is looking especially krusty. I'm going to give it a serious cleaning before I try playing it. I also found the Shadowrun Street Samurai Catalog (Shadowrun 7104).

Back on the wall with all the cords and connectors I also found 3 PlayStation power cords, another SNES adaptor, a Sega Genesis adaptor, and get this... An Atari 2600 adaptor! I scoured the store looking for the 2600 that must have been there in week 47, but to no avail. I thought I had found it in the answering machines, but I was mistaken.

I got everything for $30.87 after tax. I'm definitely going back next week.
