Al-Baqarah verse (verse) 256 is a verse of the Islamic scripture, the Quran.
The verse includes the phrase "there is no compulsion in religion".
Immediately after this statement, the Qur'an offers an argument for it: since it clearly distinguishes the path of guidance from the path of error through revelation, explanation, clarity and repetition, it is now up to the people. Either they choose it or the other way around.
This verse comes right after the Throne verse.

Worship and Parent's Rights in Islam

Parents are the couple after they had been endowed with children and became responsible for children and offspring for whose sake they sacrifice, spend long nights for their comfort and fulfill their rights as we have mentioned in previous articles.

Parents' Rights on Children in Islam

In the form of reciprocation, showing gratitude to the good things parents have done and treating them as kindly and mercifully as they deserve, Islam put duties on children toward their parents, particularly when parents grow old and become weaker. Allah commands people to be compassionate toward their parents, treat them kindly and mercifully and obey them exactly the same way the parents used to treat their little kids.

On top of parents’ rights is obeying the parents and being compassionate toward the parents. Behind Allah, nobody else except the parents seems to be more compassionate and kind. Due to its importance, Allah when enjoins the duty of being kind and compassionate to their parents in the Quran, this injunction always appears soon after the injunction to worship only one God. Allah exalted He is says in the Quran what means: {Thy Lord hath decreed that ye worship none but Him, and that ye be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in thy life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor. And, out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility, and say: "My Lord! bestow on them thy Mercy even as they cherished me in childhood} [The Night Journey: 23,24]

Muslims are ordered to show kindness and compassion to their parents and banned from making even the smallest gesture or uttering even the smallest word of reproach to them. No impatience, disrespect, or contempt may be shown to parents. Allah praised humility only when it comes from children to their parents, but never praises humility among people one another. Allah exalted He is says in the Quran what means: { And, out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility}.

However, filial obedience becomes greater when the parents grow old, either one of them, and when the parents become physically and mentally weaker, which may lead to disability. Allah commands Muslims to address their parents in terms of honor and use a highly respectful and soft language as a sign of showing mercy and compassion to the parents, in addition to praying for the parents when they grow old and become weaker and expressing thanksgiving to the parents again and again, which Allah exalted He is connects to His thanksgiving in several Quranic verses. Allah exalted He is says in the Quran what means: {And We have enjoined on man (to be good) to his parents: in travail upon travail did his mother bear him, and in years twain was his weaning: (hear the command), "Show gratitude to Me and to thy parents: to Me is (thy final) Goal} [Luqman: 14]

Filial obedience is one of the greatest gates for good. This came in a hadith said by the Prophet, peace be on him, when Abdullah Ibn Masud asked the Prophet: “Which deed is loved most by Allah?"?" The Prophet replied, "To offer prayers at their early (very first) stated times”. Abdullah asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" The Prophet said: “To be good and dutiful to one's parents”. Abdullah asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" The Prophet said: “To participate in Jihad for Allah's Cause”.[1]

Abdullah Ibn Amr Ibn Al Aas said: A man said to the Prophet, "Shall I participate in Jihad?" The Prophet said, "Are your parents living?" The man said, "Yes." the Prophet said, "Go back to your parents and give them good company"[2], and in another version, the Prophet said: “Do Jihad for their benefit”[3]

One of the greatest duties set by Islam in the context of its tackling of the parents’ rights that stated in a hadith narrated by Jabir Ibn Abdullah: A man said: O, Messenger of God, I have property and children and my father wants to take part of my property. The Prophet said: “You and your property belong to your father.”[4]

Abu Hatim Ibn Hibban[5] says:

“It means one should not treat his father the way he treats other people. One is commanded to show compassion to his father and be kind to him in what he is saying and what he is doing to the degree that the father becomes able to access his son’s money. The Prophet said: “You and your property belong to your father”, but this does not mean that fathers own their sons’ property without sons’ consent.”[6].

Hadiths and prophetic traditions on the importance of filial obedience, showing kindness and compassion to parents and warning against disobeying the parents are too many to be counted, and they show the Islamic Sharia’s super-high level of preserving the pristine values of the society and protecting them from being violated or destroyed.

Quranic Exegesis

The Surah can be divided into the following six paragraphs.

قرآنی تفسیر

سورۃ کو مندرجہ ذیل چھ پیراگراف میں تقسیم کیا جاسکتا ہے۔

Verse 1-10

The surah begins with the assertion that the Day of Judgement is certain to come. The Day shall evaluate a person according to his faith and deeds; it shall upgrade many a people and downgrade many of them. As a result of this assessment people shall be divided into three categories: the ashaab-ul-yameen, the ashaab-us-shimaal and the saabiqoon-ul-awwaloon.

آیت 1-10

سورۃ اس دعوے کے ساتھ شروع ہوتا ہے کہ قیامت آنے کو یقینی ہے۔ یہ دن کسی شخص کے ایمان اور اعمال کے مطابق جانچ کرے گا۔ یہ بہت سارے لوگوں کو اپ گریڈ کرے گا اور ان میں سے بہت سے لوگوں کو نیچے لے جائے گا۔ اس تشخیص کے نتیجے میں لوگوں کو تین اقسام میں تقسیم کیا جائے گا: اصحاب ال یامین ، اشعب ہم شمال اور صبیقون الاولون۔

Verse 11-26

Those nearest to the Almighty will be the saabiqoon-ul-awwaloon. The details of the gifts and favours of their Lord which they shall receive in paradise are recounted together with the qualities of the saabiqoon-ul-awwaloon which actually entitled them to these favours.

آیت 11-26

قادر مطلق کے نزدیک سبیقون الاولون ہوں گے۔ ان کے پروردگار کے تحفوں اور احسانات کی تفصیلات جو انہیں جنت میں ملیں گی ، سبیقون الاولون کی خصوصیات کے ساتھ مل کر بیان کیا گیا ہے جو درحقیقت انہیں ان احسانات کا حقدار ہے۔

Verse 27-40

The second place shall be occupied by the ashaab-ul-yameen. A dilineation is made of the bounties and rewards which they shall be blessed with in parardise and their personal high character which made them worthy of this life of bliss.

دوسری جگہ پر اصحاب الثمین کا قبضہ ہوگا۔ ایک بے حرمتی انعامات اور انعامات سے بنی ہے جس کی بدولت انہیں جزائے خیر اور ان کے ذاتی اعلٰی کردار سے نوازا جائے گا جس کی وجہ سے وہ نعمتوں کی زندگی کے قابل بن گئے۔

Verse 41-48

The horrible fate of the ashaab-us-shimaal is depicted and a reference is made to a few of their grave sins which led them to this terrible punishment.

اشعب us-شمال کی خوفناک انجام کو پیش کیا گیا ہے اور ان کے چند سنگین گناہوں کا حوالہ دیا گیا ہے جس کی وجہ سے وہ اس خوفناک عذاب کا باعث بنے۔

Verse 49-74

The Quraish are directly addressed and warned that they shall end up with the same fate as that of the ashaab-us-shimaal if they persist in their attitude of denying the Prophet (sws). In this regard, a reference is made to certain self-evident arguments which bear evidence to the Day of Reward and Punishment. Such is the nature of these arguments that no excuse but stubborness on their part can deny them.

قریش کو براہ راست خطاب کیا گیا ہے اور انہیں تنبیہ کی گئی ہے کہ اگر وہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی تکذیب کرنے کے اپنے رویے پر قائم رہیں تو وہ اسی صورت حال کا خاتمہ کریں گے جو اصحاب-شم-شمال کی طرح ہیں۔ اس سلسلے میں ، کچھ خودبخود دلائل کا حوالہ دیا جاتا ہے جو جزا اور سزا کے دن کے ثبوت ہیں۔ ان دلائل کی نوعیت ایسی ہے کہ ان کی طرف سے کوئی عذر نہیں لیکن ضد ان کا انکار نہیں کرسکتی۔

Verse 75-96

An indication is made to the exalted status of the Quran and the fact that it is above and beyond the reach of Satan and his agents. The Quraish are again cautioned not to turn a deaf ear towards this sublime message and invite their doom. The fate which this Book is informing them about is a reality. Fortunate are they who will today strive to attain a place among the ashaab-ul-yameen and the saabiqoon-ul-awwaloon; those who will not do so, shall end up among the ashaab-us-shimaal and shall face a grievous penalty.

Philosophy of life in Islam | Muslims believe that Almighty Allah is the only creator of this world and all other things which are present in this world. Acknowledging the existence of a creator is the first step in understanding our true purpose in life. There are many logical and rational reasons for believing in a creator. Allah says:

مسلمان یہ مانتے ہیں کہ اللہ تعالی ہی اس دنیا اور دیگر تمام چیزوں کا خالق ہے جو اس دنیا میں موجود ہے۔ کسی تخلیق کار کے وجود کا اعتراف کرنا زندگی میں ہمارے حقیقی مقصد کو سمجھنے کا پہلا قدم ہے۔ ایک تخلیق کار پر یقین کرنے کی بہت ساری منطقی اور عقلی وجوہات ہیں۔ اللہ کا ارشاد ہے:

الَّذِينَ يَسْتَحِبُّونَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا عَلَى الْآخِرَةِ وَيَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَيَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًا أُولَٰئِكَ فِي ضَلَالٍ بَعِيدٍ

“Those who love more the life (of) the world than the Hereafter, and hinder from (the) Path (of) Allah, and seek in it crookedness, those [in] (are) far astray".(Surah Ibrahim 14:3)

"جو لوگ آخرت سے زیادہ دنیا کی زندگی کو پسند کرتے ہیں اور اللہ کی راہ (کی راہ) میں رکاوٹ ڈالتے ہیں اور اس میں ٹیڑھا پن تلاش کرتے ہیں ، وہ لوگ جو گمراہ ہیں"۔ (سور Ibrahim ابراہیم 14: 3)

The present society has evolved so drastically around money-oriented expansions that its values and norms of morality have also tarnished. People have almost ceased to differentiate between the right and wrong and think of living this life to the fullest in every respect. The Islamic way of life is thus based on a unique concept of man’s place in the universe. We can thus lead to fulfilling lives by bringing more Islam into our lives. Allah says:

موجودہ معاشرہ پیسہ پر مبنی توسیع کے آس پاس اتنا تیزی سے تیار ہوا ہے کہ اس کی اقدار اور اخلاقیات کے اصول بھی داغدار ہوگئے ہیں۔ لوگ قریب قریب ہی صحیح اور غلط کے درمیان فرق کرنا چھوڑ چکے ہیں اور اس زندگی کو ہر لحاظ سے پوری زندگی گزارنے کے بارے میں سوچتے ہیں۔ اسلامی طرز زندگی اس طرح کائنات میں انسان کے مقام کے انوکھے تصور پر مبنی ہے۔ اس طرح ہم اپنی زندگیوں میں مزید اسلام لا کر زندگی کی تکمیل کا باعث بن سکتے ہیں۔ اللہ کا ارشاد ہے:

مَنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحًا مِّن ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَلَنُحْيِيَنَّهُ حَيَاةً طَيِّبَةً وَلَنَجْزِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْرَهُم بِأَحْسَنِ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ

“Whoever does righteous deeds whether male or female while he (is) a believer, then surely We will give him l a life good, and We will pay them their reward to (the) best of what they used (to) do.” (Surah An-Nahl 16:97)

"جو شخص نیک عمل کرے خواہ مرد ہو یا مادہ جبکہ وہ (مومن) ہے ، پھر ہم اسے اچھی زندگی عطا کریں گے ، اور ہم ان کو ان کا بدلہ بہترین کاموں میں دیں گے۔" (سور Surah النحل 16:97)

We believe that there is only One Creator Who created us and we acknowledged Him, we all know that He created us (humankind) to serve Him. Now the question comes to mind that How we can serve Him? There is a reason behind the creation of this world and humankind.

ہم یقین رکھتے ہیں کہ صرف ایک خالق ہی ہے جس نے ہمیں پیدا کیا اور ہم نے اسے تسلیم کیا ، ہم سب جانتے ہیں کہ اس نے ہمیں (انسانیت) اس کی خدمت کے لئے پیدا کیا ہے۔ اب سوال ذہن میں آتا ہے کہ ہم اس کی خدمت کیسے کر سکتے ہیں؟ اس دنیا اور انسانیت کی تخلیق کے پیچھے ایک وجہ ہے۔

Islam has a certain Philosophy of like and man's existence in this universe:

Islam is a way of life that transcends race and ethnicity
Islam’s teaching shows that all innocent life is sacred
Islam has no schisms between human beings
Islam enjoins upon its believers in purifying
Islam establish peace and justice in society
Islam forbids to hateful words and actions
Islam encourages people to be generous
Islam commands love, mercy, and peace
Islam has the dignity of all human being
Islam considers all life forms as sacred
Islam has the infinite value for all
Islam has the sanctity of human life
Always be grateful that you have less
All happens, occurs with the divine decree
Never spread rumours and do not listen to them
Never let trivialities be the cause of your destruction
Never lose heart by a lack of any other material thing
Allah the Exalted created humanity to carry His trusts

اسلام کو اس کائنات میں پسند اور انسان کے وجود کا ایک خاص فلسفہ ہے:

اسلام زندگی کا ایک ایسا طریقہ ہے جو نسل اور نسل سے بالاتر ہے

اسلام کی تعلیم سے پتہ چلتا ہے کہ ساری معصوم زندگی مقدس ہے

اسلام کا انسانوں کے مابین کوئی فرق نہیں ہے

اسلام اپنے ایمان والوں کو پاکیزگی میں مبتلا ہے

Islam is a religion which balances the worldly life and the life to come. According to Islam, the worldly life is like a farm in which a Muslim sows the seeds of good deeds in all aspects of life to reap the rewards of his hard work both in this life and the hereafter. Allah says:

اسلام ایک ایسا مذہب ہے جو دنیاوی زندگی اور آنے والی زندگی میں توازن رکھتا ہے۔ اسلام کے مطابق ، دنیاوی زندگی ایک کھیت کی مانند ہے جس میں ایک مسلمان اپنی زندگی کی زندگی اور آخرت دونوں میں اپنی محنت کا صلہ اٹھانے کے لئے زندگی کے تمام پہلوؤں میں نیک اعمال کا بیج بوتا ہے۔ اللہ کا ارشاد ہے:

الَّذِينَ ضَلَّ سَعْيُهُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ يَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمْ يُحْسِنُونَ صُنْعًا

“Those – is lost their effort in the life (of) the world, while they think that they (were) acquiring good (in) work". (Surah Al-Kahf 18:104)

"وہ لوگ دنیا کی زندگی میں اپنی کوششیں گنوا بیٹھے ہیں ، جبکہ ان کے خیال میں وہ (اچھے) کام حاصل کر رہے ہیں۔" (سور Surah الکحف 18: 104)

But the reality is that the attractions of this life do blind us from seeing the big picture that includes our impending departure from this life and then resurrected in the next eternal life. Fearing that our means of sustenance in this life are indispensable, we make the mistake of turning means into goals. We run after wealth believing it to buy and secure our present and the future.

لیکن حقیقت یہ ہے کہ اس زندگی کی کشش ہمیں اس بڑی تصویر کو دیکھنے سے اندھا کردیتی ہے جس میں اس زندگی سے ہماری آنے والی روانگی بھی شامل ہے اور پھر اگلی ابدی زندگی میں دوبارہ زندہ ہوجائے گی۔ اس خوف سے کہ اس زندگی میں ہمارے رزق کے حصول ناگزیر ہیں ، ہم اسباب کو اہداف میں بدلنے کی غلطی کرتے ہیں۔ ہم دولت کو اپنے حال اور مستقبل کو خریدنے اور محفوظ رکھنے کے لئے اس پر یقین رکھتے ہوئے بھاگتے ہیں۔

Purpose of Life according to Quaranic Verses:

“I have created the jinn and humankind only for My worship.” (Quran, 51:56)
“Did you think that We had created you in play (without any purpose) and that you would not be brought back to Us?” (Quran 23:115)
“And among the people there is he who sells himself for the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is Kind to His worshippers.” (Quran 2:207)
“Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were (once) a joined entity, then We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?” (Quran, 21:30)
“Satan plans to incite enmity and hatred among you with intoxicants and gambling and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and regular prayer. Will you not then abstain?” (Quran, 5:91)
“Did you then think that We created you in vain and that you would not be returned to us?” (Quran 23:115)
” …Who has created life and death so that He may try you which of you are best in deeds…” (Quran 67:2)
“And I created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone).” (Quran 51:56)

The purpose of our life is the worship of our Creator in the many ways there are to worship Him (prayer, helping others, seeking knowledge, etc.).

The Basic Values of Islam, about the value of “Purpose”:

The believers will not face the same afterlife as the corrupters.
The pious will not be treated the same as sinners.
The purpose of our life is the worship of our Creator.
Do the best works for the sake of God.
The pleasure of Allah should be our goal.
Beginning of the Universe: The first evidence that points to the existence of God relates to understanding the origin of the universe.
God Sends Guidance: The Quran is a book of guidance and explains many concepts such as the purpose of our existence; who God is; the actions liked and disliked by God.”It is not befitting for Allah to take a son; He is perfect and flawless!” (Quran 19:35)

Islam even honours those who teach people and impart knowledge to them, holding them in high esteem and promising them abundant rewards. Knowing the limited time that we have in this life, giving it anything more than its due proportion, therefore, wouldn’t be prudent. Allah says:

Revelation from God

The existence of God is the actual revelation that God has sent to humankind as a sign of His existence. There are clear signs that the book of Islam, the Quran, is the word of God. Below is a summary of the reasons that support this claim. The Quran:

Is over 1400 years old and contains many scientific facts that were unknown to people of that time and which have only been discovered recently by science. Examples include: water being the origin of all living things (Quran 21:30); the expanding universe (Quran 51:47); and the individual orbits of the sun and moon (Quran 21:33).
Contains many historical facts that were unknown to the people of that time as well as numerous predictions which have proven to be correct.
Is free from any errors or contradictions despite gradual revelation over 23 years and covering a wide variety of topics.

Has a simple, pure and universal message which appeals to Man’s intellect and inherent beliefs about Almighty God.
Has a deep and moving effect on people.
Was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who was known to be illiterate, yet contains a unique style of language that is universally known as the pinnacle of Arabic eloquence and linguistic beauty.

“The life of this world is merely the enjoyment of delusion". (Quran 3:185)

The most rational explanation for the many unique and miraculous aspects of the Quran is that it is from God. Allah Almighty created man to serve Him, meaning that men should believe in the One Lord and do well. This is the main objective of human life. Allah says:

"اس دنیا کی زندگی محض فریب کا لطف ہے"۔ (قرآن 3: 185)

قرآن مجید کے بہت سے انوکھے اور معجزاتی پہلوؤں کی سب سے عقلی وضاحت یہ ہے کہ یہ خدا کی طرف سے ہے۔ اللہ تعالٰی نے انسان کو اس کی خدمت کے ل created پیدا کیا ، اس کا مطلب یہ ہے کہ مرد ایک ہی رب پر یقین کریں اور نیک عمل کریں۔ یہ انسانی زندگی کا بنیادی مقصد ہے۔ اللہ کا ارشاد ہے:

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

“Our Lord, give us goodness in this life and goodness in the Hereafter and save us from the punishment of the Hellfire". (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:201)

This life is a preparation for the Hereafter the ‘Eternal Home’ that will not be going to an end to which all human beings ultimately go. Allah has guided people to the purpose of life that is worshipping Him and seeking His pleasure. The Holy Quran in this regard is one of the best ways of knowing how a person can fulfil this purpose of pleasing Almighty Allah and give meaning to his or her life. The main reason for our creation is worship. We should fulfil this purpose of our life by following Allah’s commands given in the Quran.

"ہمارے پروردگار ، ہمیں آخرت میں بھلائی عطا فرما اور ہمیں جہنم کے عذاب سے بچا"۔ (سور Surah البقر 2 2: 201)

یہ زندگی آخرت کے لئے تیاری ہے ’’ ابدی گھر ‘‘ جس کا خاتمہ نہیں ہوگا جس کا خاتمہ تمام انسان بالآخر کریں گے۔ اللہ نے لوگوں کو زندگی کے اس مقصد کی طرف رہنمائی کی ہے جو اس کی عبادت اور اس کی خوشنودی کے حصول کے لئے ہے۔ اس سلسلے میں قرآن مجید یہ جاننے کا ایک بہترین طریقہ ہے کہ کوئی شخص کس طرح اللہ تعالٰی کو خوش کرنے اور اس کی زندگی کو معنی بخشنے کے اس مقصد کو پورا کرسکتا ہے۔ ہماری تخلیق کی سب سے بڑی وجہ عبادت ہے۔ ہمیں اپنی زندگی کا یہ مقصد قرآن مجید میں اللہ کے احکامات پر عمل کرتے ہوئے پورا کرنا چاہئے۔

9 الْجَبَّارُ AL-JABBAR The Compeller, The Restorer Al-Jabbaar is the Compeller, whatever He will is what happens. He is the One who is Exalted, High above His creation and He is the One who Reforms, the One who fixes the situation for His creation.
10 الْمُتَكَبِّرُ AL-MUTAKABBIR The Supreme, The Majestic Al-Mutakabbir is the Supreme, He reveals His Greatness and Power at every moment and in every incident. Al-Mutakabbir use His rights, privileges and attributes that are above and beyond the rights of everyone else.
11 الْخَالِقُ AL-KHAALIQ The Creator, The Maker The One Who brings things into existence after their non-existence. Who invents and innovates without a prior model. And then bestows upon them their characteristics of movement and other qualities. He is the One Who invents whatever the eyes can see and perfects their creation.
12 الْبَارِئُ AL-BAARI’ The Originator The One who is the Originator of everything. He is the Creator and The One who gives distinguished characteristics to all of His Creation. Al-Bari’ knows His creation best.
13 الْمُصَوِّرُ AL-MUSAWWIR The Fashioner The One who is the Fashioner and Former of each and every thing in all of creation. It is the One who has given everything in creation a special inclination of desire and a special form and a special manner whereby it is.
14 الْغَفَّارُ AL-GHAFFAR The All- and Oft-Forgiving The One who is forgiving and looking over our faults over and over again. He also protects us from the effects of our mistakes, in this life and the next so we may go on without shame or guilt. He is the One who can change our wrong deeds into good deeds.
15 الْقَهَّارُ AL-QAHHAR The Subduer, The Ever-Dominating The One Who dominates everything in His kingdom. He is the One before whom the whole creation has humbled itself, and submitted before His Grandeur, power and perfect strength. He is the Vanquisher without ever being unfair.
16 الْوَهَّابُ AL-WAHHAAB The Giver of Gifts The One who continually bestows gifts, favors and blessings upon all of creation. It means He not only gives gifts once or twice, but He constantly does so. He is the One who gives freely and endlessly, without expectation of any return.
17 الرَّزَّاقُ AR-RAZZAAQ The Provider The One who creates all means of nourishment and sustenance. He is The One who provides everything that is needed (rizq). It means that He bestows all means of support and growth, for the body, the mind and the spiritual life.
18 الْفَتَّاحُ AL-FATTAAH The Opener, The Judge The One who opens all the doors of mercy, profit and sustenance to His slaves. The gate of the solution of every difficut can be easily opened by Him. He makes clear what is unclear. Al-Fattaah is the One who judges between His slaves with perfect justice.
19 اَلْعَلِيْمُ AL-‘ALEEM The All-Knowing, The Omniscient The One whose knowledge (ilm) is neither acquired through learning nor preceded by ignorance, nor followed by forgetfulness. He is aware of all things, even before they happen!
20 الْقَابِضُ AL-QAABID The Withholder Al-Qaabid, Al-Baasit is the One who withholds and extends. He contracts when it is good and He expands when it is good. At time He withholds and at other times He gives. This goes for provisions (rizq), life and death.

25 ٱلْمُذِلُّ AL-MUZIL The Dishonourer, The Humiliator Al-Mu’izz, Al-Muzil is the One who gives esteem to whoever He willed, hence there is no one to degrade Him; And He degrades whoever He willed, hence there is no one to give Him esteem.
26 السَّمِيعُ AS-SAMEE’ The All-Hearing The One Who hears all sounds and voices, in all of their different languages and all their many and various needs. He is the All-Hearing, the The Ever-Listening.
27 الْبَصِيرُ AL-BASEER The All-Seeing The One Whose insight sees all things clearly, even the smallest act and both the apparent and the hidden. He is the One who sees and understands all that has been, and all that will be.
28 الْحَكَمُ AL-HAKAM The Judge, The Giver of Justice The One and Only true Judge and always delivers justice in every situation. He is the One whose judgments and decrees are never over-turned and He Who makes the final decision of the nature of all matters. He is the One who arbitrates all disputes.
29 الْعَدْلُ AL-‘ADL The Utterly Just The One who is entitled to do what He does.
30 اللَّطِيفُ AL-LATEEF The Subtle One, The Most Gentle The One who is Most knowledgeable of the most subtle details. His actions are so fine and subtle that they may be beyond our comprehension. He bestows gifts that are finely suited to the needs of His creation. He is extraordinarily gracious and understanding. He guides us and treats us with a kindness without us perceiving it.
31 الْخَبِيرُ AL-KHABEER The Acquainted, the All-Aware The One who is acquainted with everything, inner and outer. He is the One who has perfect knowledge and understanding of the real condition, internal qualities and meanings of all that is created.
32 الْحَلِيمُ AL-HALEEM The Most Forbearing The One Who keeps bestowing blessings, both visible and hidden, on His creation, even though they disobey Him and make many mistakes. So He forgives and does not give the sinners the punishment they deserve; He encourages them to repent and gives them time to turn to Him.
33 الْعَظِيمُ AL-‘ATHEEM The Magnificent, The Supreme The One Who is greatest, mightiest, grandest and above all He has absolute greatness in both his attributes and self. All His actions are Perfect. He is the one deserving the attributes of exaltment, glory and purity from all imperfection. His Might and Grandeur is surely beyond our grasp.
34 الْغَفُورُ AL-GHAFOOR The Forgiving, The Exceedingly Forgiving The One Who forgives beyond expectation, accepts repentance and pardons our faults. He is the One who veils our sins end protects us from their effects, so we may go on without shame or guilt. No matter, how many or how huge the sin, Al-Ghafoor can cover it up.
35 الشَّكُورُ ASH-SHAKOOR The Most Appreciative The One Who gives abundantly in return for what was little. He is the One Who is the Most Appreciative because He appreciates even the smallest of deeds, all the time. And His appreciation is unlimited; for there is no end to the happiness of Paradise.
36 الْعَلِيُّ AL-‘ALEE The Most High, The Exalted The One Who is above and exceeds all others, there is nothing and no-one above Him. His Loftiness is absolutely perfect. He is the Highest. AI-‘Alee is above and surpasses all that has ever been, all that there now is, and all that shall ever be.
37 الْكَبِيرُ AL-KABEER The Greatest, The Most Grand The One Who is incomparably great. His Essence is unimaginably great Perfection, in might, power, wisdom and mercy in all His Attributes. He is the Most Great. He is far too great to be compared to any of His creatures; His creatures can never be like Him.
38 الْحَفِيظُ AL-HAFEEDH The Preserver, The All-Heedful and All-Protecting The One Whose power preserves the heavens and the earth. He is the Guardian and Preserver of all the worlds. Al-Hafeedh is heedful of all the actions that we perform by His Knowledge and He protects His slaves from all kinds of hardship and evil.
39 المُقيِت AL-MUQEET The Sustainer Al-Muqeet overwhelms everything with His power and is responsible for all things with His comprehensive and all-inclusive knowledge. He is the Powerful Maintainer and oversees all that exists, sending down provision to His creatures and sharing it out among them, taking care of all living beings.
40 الْحسِيبُ AL-HASEEB The Reckoner, The Sufficient Al-Haseeb is the Bringer to account of His slaves; He knows their deeds, their lifespans and all their affairs. He is the One Who is sufficient; He takes care of all His slaves. Al-Haseeb keeps record of all actions and then He will requite them according to His wisdom.
41 الْجَلِيلُ AL-JALEEL The Majestic The One who is attributed with Greatness of Power and Glory of Status.
42 الْكَرِيمُ AL-KAREEM The Most Generous, The Most Esteemed The One Who is the Most Generous, continually giving forth the most precious bounties to His creation. He is Al-Kareem in His essence, He is the most esteemed and honored because of His Perfection and Oneness. He is Al-Kareem in His dealings with His creation. He forgives, He follows through and His giving exceeds all expectations.
43 الرَّقِيبُ AR-RAQEEB The Watchful The One Who is closely watching over His creation, hearing, seeing and knowing everything. He is the Observer and Witness who is never absent from the scene. Ar-Raqeeb watches you wherever you are, whatever you do, and whenever you do it and He even knows your unspoken intentions.
44 الْمُجِيبُ AL-MUJEEB The Responsive One The One Who answers prayers end responds to requests of those who ask and to the call of those who call upon Him by helping them according to His Wisdom in dealing with their affairs. Al-Mujeeb will often give you more than what you ask for, because He will respond to you with what you need and what is best for you.
45 الْوَاسِعُ AL-WAASI’ The All-Encompassing, the Boundless The One Whose expansive essence encompasses the whole creation. His capacities and the meanings of His Attributes are without limit and in abundance. The power, mercy, generosity and knowledge of Al-Waasi’ are boundless. His authority never ends and His domain is endless.
46 الْحَكِيمُ AL-HAKEEM The All-Wise The One Whose wisdom is perfect, free from any error or misunderstanding. His divine will is executed with His divine wisdom, which means He does everything in the most appropriate way in the best place and time.
47 الْوَدُودُ AL-WADOOD The Most Loving The One Who is the source of all love and affection. His Love is intense, constant and lasting. Al-Wadood is the One Who is deserving of all love and affection! Al-Wadood loves the believers and the believers love Him more than anything.
48 الْمَجِيدُ AL-MAJEED The Glorious, The Most Honorable The One Whose essence is the perfection of majesty and glory. He is dignified, glorious end exceedingly generous. Al-Majeed is the only One Who deserves all praise and honor due to His excellence in both His Being and Actions.
49 الْبَاعِثُ AL-BA’ITH The Resurrector, The Raiser of the Dead The One who resurrects His slaves after death for reward and/or punishment.
50 الشَّهِيدُ ASH-SHAHEED The All- and Ever Witnessing The One Who is ever observing everything and everyone He created. The One Who witnesses the seen and the unseen, all actions and even thoughts and intentions and He is the ultimate Witness on the Day of Judgement.
51 الْحَقُّ AL-HAQQ The Absolute Truth The One Who is the the and truly-existing. His essence is the only reality and He is the One through whom the truth, all righteousness and justice are revealed. His Word, Actions, Reward, Punishment and Promise are the truth.
52 الْوَكِيلُ AL-WAKEEL The Trustee, The Disposer of Affairs The One who can be entrusted with all affairs. He is the ultimate Trustee, guardian and administrator of all things and we can trust in the fact that Al-Wakeel will provide the perfect resolution for every matter.
53 الْقَوِيُّ AL-QAWIYY The All-Strong The One Who is beyond all weakness. His strength is supreme. unlimited and inexhaustible. Before Him the strength of anything or any one is insignificant and so does the greatness of any one held as great.
54 الْمَتِينُ AL-MATEEN The Firm, The Steadfast The One with great firmness. He is the owner of all strength and His nature is the utmost firmness and steadfastness. He is the One who can easily overcome anything through supreme firmness and strength of determination.
55 الْوَلِيُّ AL-WALIYY The Protecting Associate The Protecting Friend, Patron, and Supporter.
56 الْحَمِيدُ AL-HAMEED The Praiseworthy The One who is praised and is praiseworthy. He is the only One who deserves each manner of praise, honour and thanks for His inherent qualities and not only for specific favours.
57 الْمُحْصِي AL-MUHSEE The All-Enumerating, The Counter The One who the count of things are known to Him.
58 الْمُبْدِئُ AL-MUBDI The Originator, The Initiator The One who started the human being.
59 الْمُعِيدُ AL-MU’ID The Restorer, The Reinstater The One who brings back the creatures after death.
60 الْمُحْيِي AL-MUHYEE The Giver of Life Al-Muhyee is the only One who can bring something to life. He creates from nothing and surrounds all with the right conditions to survive until He decrees life to end. Then He resurrects life on the Day of Judgement and all of this is easy for Him.
61 اَلْمُمِيتُ AL-MUMEET The Bringer of Death, the Destroyer The One who renders the living dead.
62 الْحَيُّ AL-HAYY The Ever-Living The One who has a continuous life with no beginning or end. His Life with all His Attributes are perfect end there is no end to His existence. He was before all else, so shall He remain throughout endless time.
63 الْقَيُّومُ AL-QAYYOOM The Sustainer, The Self-Subsisting The One who is established on His Own and by Whom all things subsist. He sustains, protects and oversees. He provides, preserves, watches and manages all that exists. He needs no food nor drink, for He is the One who feeds but is not fed. He is absolutely free of any need from all of the creation.

67 اَلاَحَدُ AL-AHAD The Unique, The Only One The One who is unique in both His essence and attributes. There is no one or nothing like Him and He was, is and will forever be the unequaled amid indivisible Only One.
68 الصَّمَدُ AS-SAMAD The Eternal, Satisfier of Needs The One who is eternal, unaffected and unchanged. He is the One who can satisfy each need in a way He knows is best, while He is without any needs. He is the One upon who all of the creation depends, while He depends on no one.
69 الْقَادِرُ AL-QADEER The Capable, The Powerful The One who has perfect, complete Power and Ability. By the Power of Al-Qadeer the creation is brought into being, life and death is given and by His power the resurrection and recompense will be established.
70 الْمُقْتَدِرُ AL-MUQTADIR The Omnipotent The One whose Might is Great and through His overwhelming Power Al-Muqtadir controls all His creatures. He subdues everyone and everything in His domain. His decree prevails in every situation.
71 الْمُقَدِّمُ AL-MUQADDIM The Expediter, The Promoter Al-Muqaddim, Al-Mu’akhkhir is the One who puts things in their right places. He makes ahead what He wills and delays what He wills.
72 الْمُؤَخِّرُ AL-MU’AKHKHIR The Delayer, the Retarder Al-Muqaddim, Al-Mu’akhkhir is the One who puts things in their right places. He makes ahead what He wills and delays what He wills.

75 الظَّاهِرُ AZ-DHAAHIR The Manifest The One that nothing is above Him and nothing is underneath Him, hence He exists without a place. He, The Exalted, His Existence is obvious by proofs and He is clear from the delusions of attributes of bodies.
76 الْبَاطِنُ AL-BAATIN The Hidden One, Knower of the Hidden The One who cannot be seen in the way the creation can be seen. He is the One from whom nothing is hidden and who surrounds all things. He knows even the inner states, yet He is veiled from the creation’s perception.
77 الْوَالِي AL-WAALI The Governor, The Patron The One who owns things and manages them.
78 الْمُتَعَالِي AL-MUTA’ALI The Self Exalted The One who is clear from the attributes of the creation.
79 الْبَرُّ AL-BARR The Source of Goodness, the Kind Benefactor The One whose kind and gracious goodness is bestowed on the creation. He is the doer of all good and all good deeds come from Him.
80 التَّوَابُ AT-TAWWAB The Ever-Pardoning, The Relenting The One who grants repentance to whoever He willed among His creatures and accepts their repentance.

81 الْمُنْتَقِمُ AL-MUNTAQIM The Avenger The One who victoriously prevails over His enemies and punishes them for their sins. The One who destroys them.

82 العَفُوُّ AL-‘AFUWW The Pardoner The One who eliminates sins and faults. He is the One who not only forgives sins, but can completely blot out and make any mistake, error or sin disappear whenever He wishes.
83 الرَّؤُوفُ AR-RA’OOF The Most Kind The One who bestows utmost tender mercy on the creation. He is the One whose compassion, affection, kindness and tenderness are beyond understanding.
84 مَالِكُ الْمُلْكِ MAALIK-UL-MULK Master of the Kingdom, Owner of the Dominion The One who owns and rules all of the creation. He is the One who has the authority and power to rule, command and decide for the worlds and everything they contain.
85 ذُوالْجَلاَلِ وَالإكْرَامِ DHUL-JALAALI WAL-IKRAAM Possessor of Glory and Honour, Lord of Majesty and Generosity The One who is the majestic Possessor and Lord of all generosity. He is the One who is the owner of every attribute of glory, honour and bounty.

87 الْجَامِعُ AL-JAAMI’ The Gatherer, the Uniter The One who unites and gathers together. He is the One who assembles together which had been dispersed, composes and connects similar things and opposites and gathers together mankind on the Day of Judgement.
88 الْغَنِيُّ AL-GHANIYY The Self-Sufficient, The Wealthy The One who is without need of anything. He is the One who is completely independent and the whole creation depends on His wealth. He is in no need of any help or aid of anything or anyone, yet all are in need of Him.
89 الْمُغْنِي AL-MUGHNI The Enricher The One who satisfies the necessities of the creatures.
90 اَلْمَانِعُ AL-MANI’ The Withholder The Shielder, the Defender.
91 الضَّارَّ AD-DHARR The Distresser Ad-Dharr, An-Nafi’ is the One who makes harm reach to whoever He willed and benefit to whoever He willed.
92 النَّافِعُ AN-NAFI’ The Propitious, the Benefactor Ad-Dharr, An-Nafi’ is the One who makes harm reach to whoever He willed and benefit to whoever He willed.
93 النُّورُ AN-NUR The Light, The Illuminator The One who is Light and has created light He placed in the heavens and earth to lighten them. An-Nur is also the One who illuminates the hearts of the believers with knowledge, faith and guidance.
94 الْهَادِي AL-HAADI The Guide The One who is the source of guidance. He is the One who sent prophets and messengers to guide mankind, guides the senses and hearts and directs His servants to the Straight Path.
95 الْبَدِيعُ AL-BADEE’ The Incomparable Originator Al-Badee’ is the unique Originator. He is the One whose incomparable power originates, invents and brings into existence all of the unique creation without following any prior model or unlike any similarity to anything that ever existed.
96 اَلْبَاقِي AL-BAAQI The Ever-Surviving, The Everlasting The One that the state of non-existence is impossible for Him.
97 الْوَارِثُ AL-WAARITH The Inheritor, The Heir Al-Waarith is the supreme Heir. He is the One to whom all creatures return. All possessions return to Him when their possessor is gone and it is He who remains after the whole creation has perished.
98 الرَّشِيدُ AR-RASHEED The Guide, Infallible Teacher The Guide to the Right Path, The One who guides.
99 الصَّبُورُ AS-SABOOR The Forbearing, The Patient The One who does not quickly punish the sinners.

Marriage of Hazart Ali (R.A) AND Fatima (R.A) |In the year 623, the Holy Prophet (SAW) told Ali (AS) that Allah had commanded him to give his daughter Fatima in marriage to him. Muhammad (peace be upon him) said to Fatima: "I have married you to the dearest member of my family." This family is often glorified by Muhammad, and he called them his Ahl al-Bayt in events such as al-Mubarak about events such as the Mubahila and the Hadith. In the Holy Qur'an, he also glorified in many matters such as the verse of purification.
Ali's four children were born to Fatima, Muhammad's only child. They are Hassan, Hussain, Zainab and Umm Kulthum bint Ali.
Muhammad referred to his two sons (Hassan and Hussein) as his own sons, won honors several times in his life and was entitled "Leaders of the Soldiers" (Paradise, Hereafter).
Their marriage lasted eight years until Fatima's death. Although marriage was allowed, Ali did not marry another woman during Fatima's lifetime, and her marriage to him has a special spiritual significance for all Muslims because it is the two great personalities around Muhammad. Is seen as a marriage between. After Fatima's death, Ali married other wives and had many children.

Incident of Martyrdom of Ali (RA) | Ali ibn Abi Talib, the fourth Rashidun Caliph (خلیفہ) and first Shia Imam (شعیہ امام) was assassinated by a Kharijite (خارجی) called Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Amr ibn Muljam al-Muradi on 26 January 661, at the Great Mosque of Kufah in present-day Iraq. Ali, who was then 62 or 63 years of age, died due to his injuries two days after Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Amr ibn Muljam al-Muradi struck him on his head by a poison-coated sword, on the 21 (or 19) Ramadan 40 AH (28 January 661 CE). He was the third successive Caliph (خلیفہ), after Umar and Uthman, to be assassinated.

علی رضی اللہ عنہ کی شہادت کا واقعہ | علی ابن ابی طالب ، چوتھے راشدین خلیفہ اور پہلے شیعہ امام کو 26 جنوری 661 کو موجودہ عراق کی عظیم الشان مسجد کوفہ میں عبد الرحمٰن ابن عمرو بن المجمع مرادی نامی ایک خارجی نے قتل کیا۔ علی ، جس کی عمر اس وقت 62 یا 63 سال تھی ، 21 دن (یا 19) کو عبدالرحمٰن ابن عمرو بن ملجم المرادی کے ہاتھوں زہریلی تلوار سے اس کے سر پر مارنے کے دو دن بعد اس کی چوٹوں کی وجہ سے اس کی موت ہوگئی۔ ) رمضان 40 ہجری (28 جنوری 661 عیسوی)۔ وہ عمر اور عثمان کے بعد قتل ہونے والا تیسرا مسلسل خلیفہ تھا۔

Meeting between Allah and his beloved Prophet (PBUH) |

Glory be to Him, who carried His servant by night from the Holy Mosque to the Further Mosque the precincts of which We have blessed, that We might show him some of Our signs. He is the All-hearing, the All-seeing [Quran 17:1]

Every year on 27th Rajab, Muslims around the world commemorate one of the most significant and unique events in Islamic history, known as Al-Isra` and al-Mi’raj, the Prophet’s night journey from Mecca to al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem from where he embarked on the second leg of the journey heavenwards. Muslims in general consider this journey a miracle from Allah conferred exclusively upon Prophet Muhammad. It represents the climax of his spiritual journey that culminated in the ultimate gift, meeting and conversing with Allah the Almighty.

Background |As with all the other Prophets who were sent before him, Prophet Muhammad was severely tested. Throughout the majority of his mission, he was met with great opposition and enmity, vilified and attacked by proud disbelievers. Prophet Muhammad’s relentless preaching to the people to abandon idol worship and turn to the One True God, and the growing number of those who believed with him despite the persecution and pitiless torture meted out against them, so alarmed the idolaters of Quraysh and their allies that they sought out a new strategy to persecute the Muslims. They drew up a pact to boycott and sever all social and commercial relations with the Muslims and the Banu Hashim and Banu Abdul Muttalib who refused to abandon their tradition of protection of one of their own. But the three-year-long blockade against the Muslims proved to be counterproductive to the efforts of the Quraysh and its allies for it only strengthened the Prophet’s faith and made his followers even more determined to protect him against attack.

A few months after the boycott was lifted, two tragedies occurred that were to add to Muhammad’s troubles and test his faith and patience even more severely. Khadijah, Muhammad’s loyal wife who supported him with her love, goodness, and strong faith, passed away. With her death, Prophet Muhammad lost his sole source of comfort and reassurance against the heavy burdens of his cause. Shortly before this sad incident, his uncle, Abu Talib, who had so lovingly raised him and protected him throughout his mission, died. It was reported that he said of this time, “Quraysh never harmed me so much as after the death of Abu Talib.” With Abu Talib gone, it was an opportune time for the Quraysh to intensify their attacks against the Prophet and his followers. But his faith was unshaken and his conviction that Allah would give him the final victory never wavered. Whenever he saw his daughter, Fatima, cry at the insults and harm he endured, he would tell her, “Do not cry, O Fatima! Your father has Allah for his protector.”

Crushed under the malevolent conduct of the Quraysh against him and despairing of all hope to turn them around, the Prophet decided to solicit the support of other tribes and preach his faith elsewhere. Without divine commission, he traveled alone to the city of Ta`if where, he hoped, Islam would be accepted. There, he approached the tribal elders who not only rejected him but incited the people and servants to pelt him with stones and hoot him out of the city. Disgraced, exhausted, and bleeding, Prophet Muhammad left the city and took shelter near a wall. He raised his hands to heaven and prayed to Allah, saying, “O Allah! To You I complain of my weakness and of my lack of resources and the humiliation I have received. O, Most Merciful and Compassionate! You are the Lord of the oppressed and You are my Lord … I do not care for anything except Your pleasure. I seek refuge in Your light which illuminates all darkness … I pray that I should never incur Your wrath and displeasure … There is no strength or power except through You.”

It seemed that all doors were closed before him. But the Prophet displayed unshakable faith in Allah, patience, and perseverance in the face of insolent abuse and oppression. He was the living embodiment of the words of Allah the Almighty Who says, “And be steadfast in patience; for verily Allah will not suffer the reward of the righteous to perish” [Quran 11: 115]. And what better way to reward His servant than to confer upon him the miracle of the Isra` and al-Mi’raj? What better reward than to carry him to where no other prophet before him was taken, before the divine presence of Allah Himself?

Al-Isra` wal Mi’raj

The great journey of al-Isra` and Mi’raj took place around one year before the Prophet’s migration to Medina. Within the Quran, the event is mentioned only briefly. The first verse of chapter 17 references the first phase of the journey; Allah the Almighty says, “Glory be to Him, who carried His servant by night from the Holy Mosque to the Further Mosque the precincts of which We have blessed, that We might show him some of Our signs. He is the All-hearing, the All-seeing” [Quran 17: 1]. Scholars agree that the Mi’raj, the second phase of the journey, is the subject of the following verses of Chapter Al-Najm, “By the star when it sets! Your companion has not strayed; he is not deluded; he does not speak from his own desire. The Quran is nothing less than a revelation that is sent to him. It was taught to him by [an angel] with mighty powers and great strength, who stood on the highest horizon and then approached—coming down until he was two bow-lenghts away or even closer—and revealed to God’s servant what He revealed. [The Prophet’s] own heart did not distort what he saw. Are you going to dispute with him what he saw with his own eyes? A second time he saw him: by the lote-tree beyond which none may pass near the Garden of Restfulness, when the tree was covered in nameless [splendor]. His sight never wavered, nor was it too bold, and he saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord” [Quran 53: 1-18].

Details of the Prophet’s journey is found in the vast body of hadith and sirah literature. The exact details however fluctuate from one text to another. There is a difference of opinion among scholars on several points of the story such as for instance where the Prophet was staying when he was visited by the archangel Jibril, where he was offered the cups of milk and wine, and where the splitting of the chest took place. All narratives however agree that Jibril wakes Muhammad from his sleep and leads him to the Buraq — a white mount, smaller than a mule and larger than a donkey — which takes him off to his journey. The Buraq carries the Prophet to the ‘Farthest Mosque’, the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. At some point, Jibril splits open the Prophet’s chest, removes his heart, and washes it with Zamzam water. He then brings a vessel made of gold containing wisdom and faith which he empties into the Prophet’s heart and then closes up his chest. The Prophet is offered two cups from which to drink, one containing milk and the other containing wine. The Prophet chooses to drink the milk. Jibril tells him, “Praise be to Allah Who guided you to the fitrah (right path)” [Bukhari].

With Jibril as his companion, the Prophet sets off on the Buraq at phenomenal speed to Al-Aqsa Mosque where he finds Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, among a company of the prophets assembled and waiting for him. The call to prayer is then made and the Prophet is invited to lead them in prayer. This part of the journey, the Isra`, represents the Prophet’s horizontal journey across the visible physical world. It is distinct from the Mi’raj and serves as a prelude to it.

The Isra` contains initiation features. The sanctification and purification of the Prophet, represented by the splitting of his chest is a necessary preliminary to his ascension to the heavens. It prepares him for the journey to another dimension beyond time and space and opens up his heart to what he is about to see and experience. More important, it prepares him for the splendid culmination of his journey, the meeting with his Lord.

The Isra` is also paramount in that it is symbolic of two things; first it shows Allah’s grace and favor upon the Prophet. Allah chooses none but him to lead all other prophets and messengers in prayer thereby consolidating his superior status. Second, it declares the universality of Islam and signifies that it is the seal of all other messages and laws.

The next part of the journey is marked by Prophet Muhammad’s ascension to the heavens. Here, all the laws of nature and the concepts of time and space as we know cease to apply and everything the Prophet experiences and sees is beyond human comprehension. At each of the seven heavens, the Prophet accompanied by Jibril, encounters a gate and a watcher. At the gate of the lowest heaven, Jibril asks the gate-keeper to open the gate.

The gate-keeper asks, “Who is it?”

“It is Jibril,” he answers.

The gate-keeper says, “Who is accompanying you?”

Jibril says, “It is Muhammad.”

The gate-keeper then says, “Has he been called?”

Jibril says, “Yes.”

The gate-keeper says, “He is welcomed. What a wonderful visit this is!”

As the Prophet and his companion continue to travel upward to the other levels of heaven, the same questions are asked by the gate-keeper of each heaven and the same responses are given.

At every heaven, the Prophet encounters a prophet. In the first heaven, he meets Adam, the father of mankind. The Prophet greets Adam with the greetings of peace. Delighted to see the greatest of his descendants, Adam, replies, “Welcome my son, welcome O Prophet of Allah!” Gabriel then takes the Prophet up to the other heavens where he encounters Jesus and Yehya in the second heaven; Yusuf in the third heaven; Idris in the fourth heaven; Harun in the fifth heaven; Musa in the sixth heaven; and finally Ibrahim, the father of prophets in the seventh heaven. In each heaven, Prophet Muhammad greets the prophet residing in it with greetings of peace and he is greeted back with, “Welcome dear brother, and welcome O Prophet of Allah!”

During this heavenly journey, Prophet Muhammad sees several signs of Allah. He is shown Bayt al-Ma’moor (the qiblah of the angels) that sits above the Ka’bah, and scenes from paradise and hell. In hell, he sees people being tortured for sins such as fornication, usury, backbiting, and misappropriating the property of orphans. In paradise, the Prophet sees people enjoying the wondrous rewards promised to them by Allah in recompense for their faith and good deeds.The wonders he sees in paradise go beyond “what the eye has ever seen, what the ear has ever heard, and what the mind has ever conceived.”

Jibril then escorts the Prophet to his next destination through the seventh heaven to the uppermost boundary, Sidrat al-Muntaha (the Lote-tree) whose fruits are as big as jugs and its leaves as big as elephant ears. He sees four rivers flowing out from beneath the tree, two visible ones and two hidden ones. The Prophet asks, "What are these, O Jibril? He replies, "As for the hidden ones, they are two rivers of Paradise. The visible ones are the Nile and the Euphrates."

At Sidrat al-Muntaha, Jibril asks Mohammed to proceed alone. No one from among all of Allah’s creation has ever gone beyond Sidrat al-Muntaha for beyond it lies the throne of Allah the Almighty. Prophet Muhammad proceeds alone and reaches the climax of his journey. He stands in the presence of Allah the Almighty at a distance of “two bow-lengths away or even closer.”

We do not have the details of the exchange that went on between Allah and His beloved Prophet. What we do know however, is that during this meeting Allah commissioned Prophet Muhammad and his community with prayer, the cornerstone of Islam after monotheism. Allah tells him, “I have placed a religious duty on you and your community of fifty prayers every day and every night.”

On his descent through the heavens, Prophet Muhammad meets Musa once more who asks him about the commission he received from his Lord. When Musa learns about the number of prayers enjoined upon the community of Muhammad, he advises him to go back and implore Allah to reduce the number. The Prophet hurries back until he reaches the Tree and asks Allah to lighten the burden of his community. Allah agrees and reduces the number of prayers. When the Prophet returns to Musa and informs him of what has transpired, he is again advised to return to his Lord and ask for a further reduction. The Prophet continues to go back and forth between Musa and his Lord until Allah reduces the number to five daily prayers with each one counting as ten.

Prophet Muhammad’s journey through the heavens comes to an end. He descends from the heavens to Jerusalem, unthethers the Buraq, mounts the saddle and goes back to Mecca. The Prophet wastes no time to inform the people of his journey and encounter with Allah in the hope of winning the hearts of the idolaters over to Allah. The very next morning, he recounts his journey to the people of Mecca. He is at once ridiculed and accused of lying. To test the veracity of his wondrous claims, the people ask him to describe Al-Aqsa Mosque which he does in detail. They ask him to describe the caravans he saw en route, and he says, “I saw the caravan of so-and-so. They had lost one of their camels and were searching for it.” In spite of all the details attesting to his truthfulness, the idolaters continue to mock him for his story and accuse him of lying and insanity.

The Prophet’s Isra` and Mi’raj was indeed wonderful. The passage from Mecca to Jerusalem and then up to the heavens, the communication between the natural and the spiritual order, and coming in the presence of the Divine was the greatest and most singular event in the Prophet’s mission and in the entire history of Islam. It was an exclusive gift from Allah to His beloved Prophet to support him at a time when he was overwhelmed by disappointments and to show him his lofty status. It served to remind him that not only has Allah not forsaken him, but that He chose him alone from among all creation to reveal to him the heavenly and divine mysteries.

The Isra` and Mi’raj, though an exclusive physical experience for Prophet Muhammad, prefigures in many aspects of Islam. It is possible therefore for Muslims to experience the journey and partake of its spiritual blessings and bounties. The journey may be viewed symbolically to represent our own journey in this world towards resurrection.

Our own spiritual journey in this world to the next, may be seen as reflective of the Prophet’s Isra` and Mi’raj. However, we do not have to travel through space and time to attain the divine presence of Allah or to see His signs. His signs are everywhere for those who reflect. He says, “And He shows you (always) His signs” [Quran 40: 81], and “And say, “Praise be to Allah Who will soon show you His signs” [Quran 27: 93]. In many places in the Quran, Allah invites us to ponder His signs. Only those who observe and reflect can see that the universe is entirely composed of the signs of Allah and attest to His truth. Some of the signs of Allah which we experience everyday are enumerated in the words of Allah, “It is He who sends down rain from the sky: from it you drink, and out of it (grows) the vegetation on which you feed your cattle. With it He produces for you corn, olives, date-palms, grapes and every kind of fruit: verily in this is a sign for those who give thought. He has made subject to you the Night and the Day; the sun and the moon; and the stars are in subjection by His Command: verily in this are Signs for men who are wise. And the things on this earth which He has multiplied in varying colors (and qualities): verily in this is a sign for men who celebrate the praises of Allah (in gratitude). It is He Who has made the sea subject, that you may eat thereof flesh that is fresh and tender, and that ye may extract therefrom ornaments to wear; and you see the ships that plough the waves, that you may seek (thus) of the bounty of Allah and that you may be grateful. And He has set up on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you; and rivers and roads; that you may guide yourselves; And marks and sign-posts; and by the stars (men) guide themselves. Is then He Who creates like one that creates not? Will you not receive admonition? If you would count up the favors of Allah, never would you be able to number them: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Quran 16: 10-18].

The Isra` started from the Holy Mosque with certain initiation features. Prophet Muhammad’s heart is washed and purified and filled with wisdom and faith in preparation for his divine meeting with Allah the Almighty. Similarly, Muslims who wish to attain the divine presence of Allah must purify their hearts, strive in the cause of Allah against all temptations, stand firm in the face of suffering, and demonstrate steadfastness of faith. Allah the Almighty says, “And their Lord has accepted of them, and answered them: "Never will I suffer to be lost the work of any of you, be he male or female: Ye are members, one of another: Those who have left their homes, or been driven out therefrom, or suffered harm in My Cause, or fought or been slain,- verily, I will blot out from them their iniquities, and admit them into Gardens with rivers flowing beneath;- A reward from the presence of Allah, and from His presence is the best of rewards" [Quran 3: 195]. It is these servants of Allah who will reside in paradise, their faces bright “looking towards their Lord” [Quran 75: 23]. Jarir Ibn Abdullah narrated, “The Prophet came out to us on a night of full moon and said, ‘You will see your Lord on the Day of Resurrection as you see this (full moon)” [Bukhari]. Purity of heart and steadfastness of faith therefore represent our own Mi’raj towards our Lord, the Creator.

This does not however mean that a Muslim who truly wishes to come in the presence of his Lord and commune with Him, must await this splendid reward in the hereafter. Every Muslims can attain divine presence through ritual prayer. Allah the Almighty says, ““And when my servants ask you concerning me, tell them I am near” [Quran 2: 186]. And the Prophet said, “When any of you stands in prayer, he is in communication with his Lord, so let him pay attention to how he speaks to Him” [Bukhari].

The fact that Prophet Muhammad led the prophets and messengers of Allah in prayer, demonstrates two things. First, that all the prophets and messengers were sent from Allah. We must therefore believe in all of them and respect them. Second, the message with which the Prophet came, Islam, is the last of all heavenly religions and, as such, is the universal religion to which all the people must submit until the Day of Resurrection.

The Isra` and Mi’raj carry many great and noble meanings. Those meanings are not only relevant to the Prophet but to all Muslims and believers. At the Prophet’s time, the journey brought glad tidings to the believers and strengthened their faith. Similarly, when commemorating this occasion, Muslims are instructed to remember that for us, the Isra` and Mi’raj represents an inward journey towards the depths of our hearts, in search of Allah the Almighty, by which we will be able to realize our ultimate journey towards the eternal bliss of coming in His presence.

The Battle of Badr |The Battle of Badr , fought on Tuesday 13 March 624 CE (17 Ramadan, 2 AH in the Islamic calendar) in the Hejaz region of western Arabia (present-day Saudi Arabia), was a key battle in the early days of Islam and a turning point in Muhammad's (PBUH) struggle with his opponents among the Quraish in Mecca. The battle has been passed down in Islamic history as a decisive victory attributable to divine intervention, or by secular sources to the strategic genius of Muhammad. It is one of the few battles specifically mentioned in the Quran. All knowledge of the battle at Badr comes from traditional Islamic accounts, both hadiths and biographies of Muhammad (PBUH).

The surah can be divided into the following eight sections.

Section I (1-5)

A close scrutiny of the universe reveals that its sovereign is a Blessed and Powerful Being. He has created this world with a purpose: it has been created as a trial and test for man as to who adopts the right path and who the wrong one. A necessary outcome of this trial is that a Day should come wherein the righteous be rewarded and the rebellious be punished. If this universe is carefully observed, not even a minor flaw can be pointed out in its great expanse. Repeated observations will only second this inference. The nearest of the seven skies has been adorned with stars by the Almighty; they serve the dual purpose of guiding people in their journeys and pelting Satan and his army if they try to overhear something.

Section II (6-11)

The power and sustenance of the Almighty so evident in this universe bears evidence that those who deny the Day of Reward and Punishment will have to face the torment of hell. It will roar and shriek like a hungry lion when it sees them. Whenever a group of these rebellious people will be flung in hell, its gate-keepers will ask them whether a warner had ever warned them of this punishment. They would admit that a warner did come to them but they rejected him and had replied that the Almighty had revealed nothing and that whoever believe that the Almighty has revealed anything have, in fact, deviated from the right path. They would also confess that they had never tried to listen to and understand what had been said to them, otherwise they would not have met this fate.

Section III (12-14)

People who remain fearful of their Lord in this world shall be rewarded. All their virtuous deeds are in the knowledge of Allah and He shall duly honour them. He is the Creator of all and nothing is hidden from Him.

Section IV (15-18)

This earth has been created by the Almighty as very obedient and submissive to man. It is a source of reminder for man of a great reality: he should fully benefit from all its pleasures and facilities but should always keep in mind that these privileges entail a day of accountability before the Almighty; not even for a moment should a person become unmindful of his Lord's grasp and should always remember that whenever the Almighty intends, He can destroy him by sending on him a natural calamity. History also bears example to this.

Section V (19-21)

Whatever is suspended in the unfathomable skies is held by the Almighty. He is watching everything. If someone is deprived of His assistance and support, no one will be able to help him. If He deprives someone of sustenance, no one will be able to sustain him.

Section VI (22-23)

Those who lead their lives while remaining a slave to their desires will never reach the real goal. Only they will reach this goal who remain on the right path. The Almighty has endowed people with the faculties of sight, hearing and reasoning so that people can remain on the right path by using them. But alas! very few people understand the worth of such favours.

Section VII (24-27)

The Almighty has spread man in this earth and He Himself shall definitely gather him one day. The Prophet (sws) is told to inform the disbelievers that only Allah knows when the Day of Judgement will come and that he himelf has no knowledge of its time of arrival; he has only been sent to warn them about it and not to inform them about its time of arrival. However, when the Day does arrive, the faces of the disbelievers will turn black with gloom.

Section VIII (28-30)

If these disbelievers are awaiting the change of fortunes for the Prophet (sws) and his Companions, and suppose that this change does happen, then why should they themselves rest assured? They shall certainly meet the dreadful fate they have been informed of.
