Anyway, this is the script I have to read on the TV show I’m on. I’m the Michael guy. –doc.write (like the new nick? :p)&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;James: Hello, I’m James Gilbert-&lt;br/&gt;Michael: and I’m Michael Rowen. Today we’re going to be talking about the differences and similarities of the two main types of computers, desktops and laptops.&lt;br/&gt;James: To begin, let’s talk about the desktop, currently the most popular type of computer. The desktop is a non-portable computer which allows it to weigh more and contain more.&lt;br/&gt;Michael: Yes, the better hardware a system is loaded with, the heavier it most likely is. With the desktop this doesn’t matter since it sits in one place all the time. These computers are also easier to build, and are cheaper than laptops.&lt;br/&gt;James: When choosing a desktop computer, you need to determine what you will be using it for. Most people, run few programs, and don’t require an amazing computer. However, people who play games or use image, video, or sound editing software will need a better computer than the average person.&lt;br/&gt;Michael: When you wish to play games with high minimum specs, you can’t be too picky about prices. Dell’s XPS is a great computer for gamers, but the price is very expensive. If you wish to save a few hundred bucks on your next desktop though, building it yourself shouldn’t be put out of the question.&lt;br/&gt;James: Building your own computer means that it can be completely customizable, and surprisingly, it’s not as hard as it sounds. If you have basic computer knowledge you can most likely do it. Computer parts aren’t expensive, but when added together it may seem like a lot. But if you compare the price of a Dell XPS to the same thing, just built yourself you will be very surprised.&lt;br/&gt;Michael: When looking for parts to build your own desktop, check out newegg.com and pricewatch.com. Try to avoid eBay and other places like that since computer parts can easily be broken and sometimes people rip you off. Desktops, in all, are a lot cheaper than laptops and come with their own set of great qualities.&lt;br/&gt;James: Now, to talk about the laptop. Laptops are neat since they are portable and can be taken anywhere. What most people don’t realize though is that the internet doesn’t work anywhere. A wi-fi, wireless fidelity, connection must be present and working for a connection to the internet to work.&lt;br/&gt;Michael: So, though laptops may be portable, getting them to use the internet isn’t the easiest thing. Also, laptops are like diamond rings to thieves. Laptops are stolen regularly, and easily used. When taking your laptop on vacation or away from home, put passwords on all your accounts so if someone steals it, they’ll have to figure out the password or install a new operating system.&lt;br/&gt;James: Now, let’s talk about the laptop’s hardware vs. the desktops. The laptop has decent hardware, enough to run games such as starsiege tribes, but don’t even think about trying games like halo, bf2, or metal of honor. The laptop version of the xps is extremely expensive and will still have a few problems playing these high-spec games. &lt;br/&gt;Michael: The desktop on the other hand works great with most games, as long as you buy one with decent RAM (1 gig should be good) a good size hard drive (a minimum of 100 gigs) and a video card with 128 or 256 mb on it. For the video card, you can get 512mb but 256mb should be good. &lt;br/&gt;James: Overall, if you travel a lot, defiantly get a laptop while non-traveling geeks should stick to their good old desktops as their hardware is much more advanced and they come a lot cheaper. They’re also easier to build, if you’d like to save a few hundred bucks. &lt;br/&gt;Michael: Well that’s about it for today, don’t forget to tune in next week and join us for a discussion about game distribution systems. &lt;br/&gt;James: This has been James and Michael on the BBN.</description><thr:total xmlns:thr="http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0">0</thr:total></item><item><title>I'm stuck....</title><link>http://geekgalaxy.blogspot.com/2005/09/im-stuck.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)</author><pubDate>Sun, 4 Sep 2005 09:03:00 -0700</pubDate><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13950040.post-112585112300699316</guid><description>Alright, i'm a stranded blogger with a computer. And, most importantly bf2. Well, i haven't been blogging much lately due to bf2 and a lack of blog ideas. Well, basically i'm $tuck. Alright, well, aha! I've got it...let's talk about voip. Google has come out with it's next-gen messenger hence the name google talk. It's a voip based messenger that has it's good and bads. It also has something very weird called "wumpus game" which i have yet to figure out. Well, first off google is now entering the world of voip with a client better than skype or even gizmo. The quality is amazing, Lag= 0 and it has a sleek mac-like interface. Also, much like xfire it has a little status message that is customizable. Then say under my status i put "at meeting". This will now appear under my name on everyones buddy list.&lt;br /&gt;But of couse, google talk isn't perfect. One annoying feature is its abillity to save a conversation. It saves every text conversation and next time you start talking to someone it will show your last conversation with your new one. Also, something discovered my mant people is that in google talk, there's a hidden message. It's a bunch of numbers but when you replace them with their letter ("a" would be 1 "b" , 2 etc...) it spells "Play the wampus game". However, when you click it doesn't load any game. Some other blogger did research it though and found out there is a such thing as a wampus game. They found a entry in wikipedia and it was some weird game. It's kinda like pong i think.&lt;br /&gt;Not too many other things happened this week as far as computers go though. But how would i know, i've been playing battlefield 2 all week. I think i'm going to go download a mod for it in a few minutes. In case any of you don't know what battlefield 2 (also called bf2) is, it's a awesome first person shooter with a lot of action. The games homepage is located at http://www.eagames.com/official/battlefield/battlefield2/us/home.jsp?ncc=1 . Oh, bf2 brings up another story. A few weeks ago i bought the game at best buy for $50 and when i got home it didn't work. It turned out i didn't meet the min specs so i had to make some upgrades. So, before you buy it make sure you meet the min specs as for low-end users it probably won't work. MAKE SURE you have at least 128mb of ram on your video card.&lt;br /&gt;Ahh, now i remember one more thing i wanted to talk about. The other day my friend told me that opera was giving away free paid versions. He got his hands on one, but i failed to get there fast enough and i'm wondering if anyone knows if they'll ever do it again. Does anyone know? I'd really like to get my hands on the paid version. Post in the chat box if you know.&lt;br /&gt;Well, don't expect another post for a while, i've gotta get some stuff done. If you've got any questions about bf2 or something, just post em' in the chat box.</description><thr:total xmlns:thr="http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0">0</thr:total></item><item><title>Give them a break....</title><link>http://geekgalaxy.blogspot.com/2005/08/give-them-break.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)</author><pubDate>Sun, 21 Aug 2005 17:06:00 -0700</pubDate><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13950040.post-112466972657861094</guid><description>So...I just read a article on Slashdot, and I believe as another user said that this guy is going a little overboard here. He claims that for 10 days he's going to run on a Linux system. Now here's Linux; a open-source OS that is nice to use every once and while but doesn't support most software. But it doesn't get that nasty malware that windows does. Ok, now here's windows; a completely customizable OS that can do many things but also gets stuck every once and a while. Linux, though I haven't used it before, looks like it just can't do the things windows can. Most programs don't work so your stuck with basic programs. And usually most distros are uglier than the windows interface. In other words, microsoft isn't THAT bad and if you wana go with Linux for 10 days too...Go right ahead, but after a while I imagine you'll get very bored with the basic software available.</description><thr:total xmlns:thr="http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0">0</thr:total></item><item><title>Windows...Vista???</title><link>http://geekgalaxy.blogspot.com/2005/08/windowsvista.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)</author><pubDate>Fri, 5 Aug 2005 06:58:00 -0700</pubDate><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13950040.post-112325335554144869</guid><description>Well, as most of you have probably heard, windows vista-previously known as longhorn will be the next windows operating system. However, from what i've heard from cnet and other tech news sites, is that longhorn will just be a tweaked xp. I've already found a article that told me one of the registry edits that makes longhorn slightly faster. I've given it a try....and haven't noticed a large difference. That doesn't mean i'm not considering longhorn, but it's not what i thought it would be. Microsoft made it sound way better than i believe it's going to be. And the name...vista, i'm not too fond of either. I know that the name doesn't matter much but couldn't they have thought of something better than vista? Well, looking over some other tech stories at the inquirer..this one was very interesting. It turns out that the new planet that was discovered...now the 10th planet, was discovered two years ago by a hacker..well..i'll let you read this one over at &lt;a href="http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=25031"&gt;the inquirer&lt;/a&gt;</description><thr:total xmlns:thr="http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0">0</thr:total></item><item><title>clav's firefox extensions</title><link>http://geekgalaxy.blogspot.com/2005/07/clavs-firefox-extensions.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)</author><pubDate>Sun, 31 Jul 2005 06:01:00 -0700</pubDate><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13950040.post-112281491929301863</guid><description>&lt;a href="http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/clav/"&gt;clav's firefox extensions&lt;/a&gt;

We've been working on setting up our own phpBB forums and well, it hasn't gone so good. We've got them hosted on a phpbbweb server so of course it's on a sub-domain. The phpbbweb server isn't very good since our forums are very slow and crash often. Also, they didn't update our forums from 2.0.15 to 16 until about a month after we created the forums. So, I went and downloaded the new version and figured I'd put it on our domain. Simple, right? Not exactly. After properly FTP'ing the folder, the subdirectory that the install.php file was in, I couldn't find. Of course in my FTP client it told I'm where that was located, but when I went to that URL, it wasn't there. I'm going to try again today, since I found out some new info from godaddy's tech support that may help solve the problem. Anyway, if anyone who's reading this has x-fire, can they please explain how I'm supposed to get that thing to work in a full-screen game. I think I see why it doesn't work for me but I'm not sure. I believe I didn't install the game properly. Otherwise it would be under the "up for a game" section, and it's not. And if anyone has a non-fileplanet URL to download the new version of starsiege tribes, please send me an email with the URL in it.</description><thr:total xmlns:thr="http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0">0</thr:total></item><item><title>Same blog, different look.</title><link>http://geekgalaxy.blogspot.com/2005/07/same-blog-different-look.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)</author><pubDate>Wed, 20 Jul 2005 14:21:00 -0700</pubDate><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13950040.post-112189466531852337</guid><description>Well, since i believe there are too many IE users out there i found this template, which i'm going to edit a little. Of course this was a phishing message becuase of the fact that i don't own a paypal account. It's a fairly short and rather official looking email. It basically says someone has tried several times to access your paypal account and have entered the wrong pass. It then says to click a link to verify it was you who was trying to log in. It then says if you don't click the link by some date, your account will be temporarily suspended. So, i call paypal and i learned that any email without your name at the top of it is a phishing message. The weird part about it was that the message came from the official paypal service email account. However, i was told by some tech support guys over at geekstogo.com that with php knowledge you can make a message appear to have come from anyone. I never used to get phishing messages or any spam at all with gmail but all the sudden, it's coming like crazy. I get messages from banks saying the same thing as that paypal scammmer did. It's just plain ridiculous. I almost feel like creating a different email account and never opening that one again. Well, i guess that'll have to wait considering all the newsletters i subscribe to go to that email. Speaking of newsletters, i wonder if one of the newsletter owners sold my email to a third party and that's where all this spam is coming from. Well, i guess i'll just have to live with it....</description><thr:total xmlns:thr="http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0">0</thr:total></item><item><title>apple, are you with em'?</title><link>http://geekgalaxy.blogspot.com/2005/07/apple-are-you-with-em.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)</author><pubDate>Wed, 13 Jul 2005 13:25:00 -0700</pubDate><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13950040.post-112128749972168629</guid><description>With all the new things coming out from apple, do you support em? I've never been a apple fan. In fact, i've only had one apple in my life and from the day i got it...i hated it. I never liked apple, but this year has been a big year for them. The computers have gotten better and they've introduced podcasting (my personal favorite thing apple has done). They also introduced intel to the apple world, or should i say intel introduced them to the world of a decent computer. And they're having that 500,000,000 song competition. Plus, they're considering making 2 and 4 gig shuffles. Not a bad year, huh? I'm liking apple better every day, because the services they provide are getting better. That's can't be a bad thing, can it? By the end of this year who knows i might even own a apple (though i told one of my friends if i ever get a mac, to slap me). I think i'll stick with windows though. Windows is more capatable and customizable. It's new X-2. It's going to be the fastest of it's kind according to the many articles and podcasts that are talking about it across the net. Intel hasn't made the move to 64 yet as far as I know. I've also heard that Dell is considering switching to AMD. All of my computers are Dell's and I would possibly get more if they switched to AMD. My next computer will definatly have the new X-2 in it..that is if it is affordable. You can buy them now, but i'm assuming they're very expensive. Anyway, i'm wondering what the heck apple means by the statment they made about "itunes supporting podcasts". They must mean podcast production since listening to podcasts can already be done itunes. Everyone thinks of this differently, since they didn't say what they meant. All they said was that it would "support" podcasting. I'm not quite sure what they mean, but i'm very excited and i'll download the next itunes immediatly. Anyway, are there any CastBlaster beta 15 testers out there? That thing sounds awesome and I'm wondering when it'll come out for the public. Adam Curry has it and there are some awesome sound fx in that thing....i'm really excited to give it a try. Right now, i have made audio with a free trial of "propaganda" which is working just great. You can even create a info page for your podcast. It's really good and i'd recommend picking it up at C-Net's download.com . Check it out.....</description><thr:total xmlns:thr="http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0">0</thr:total></item><item><title>new idea for YOU to get YOUR site some publicity...</title><link>http://geekgalaxy.blogspot.com/2005/06/new-idea-for-you-to-get-your-site-some.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)</author><pubDate>Mon, 27 Jun 2005 14:37:00 -0700</pubDate><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13950040.post-111990837529925803</guid><description>You see those links on the right? The ones that say "edit-me". Well, if you put one link up on your site, to mine, then one of those links will become yours. And there's more than two "edit-me's" there. Once those two are filled up i'll add more. In fact, i'll go edit the html to add more now......</description><thr:total xmlns:thr="http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0">0</thr:total></item><item><title>How's it lookin'?</title><link>http://geekgalaxy.blogspot.com/2005/06/hows-it-lookin.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)</author><pubDate>Mon, 27 Jun 2005 14:24:00 -0700</pubDate><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13950040.post-111990811046677612</guid><description>Hey, how's the new template lookin'? Not to mention the new podcast and smartfeed enabled feed thanks to feedburner.com :). I'm having some trouble with audio hosting but those problems should be resolved soon. For some reason, I plug in the html to play sound in a quicktime plug in and it just won't play. I've tried javascript codes too. I've even tried changing the file format to mp3 and wav. Still won't work. I'm trying to host this sound on another site so I have somewhere to link to when I create the podcast. Once I can get that working, i'll put up the testing podcast right away. The test podcast is just a bunch of clicking for about 15 seconds. But download it anyway to make sure everything is working ok. So, blogger has gone mobile with it's new phone service, which impressed me a lot. I happened to be at home when I discovered it so there wasn't a use to use the phone but I tested it out anyway. The only negitive part about it is that it takes forever to write a decent size post (that's why I only wrote "hi"!). I could use shorthand or whatever they call it but that looks really......it just doesn't look good! I would rather hold my posts till' i get near a computer and then just type the out which would take much shorter. However, there is a posidive part to the service. It's instant-meaning once you submit your post, it ends up right away on your blog. It's also very easy to switch blogs. When you write your first post you're givin a code. then you go to the blogger website and enter that code there. Once you have done that it asks if you would like to keep the blog it made for you or make it so that when you submit a post from your phone, it goes to another blog. Anyway, i've gotta go work on getting that sound hosted.</description><thr:total xmlns:thr="http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0">1</thr:total></item><item><title>Last post...</title><link>http://geekgalaxy.blogspot.com/2005/06/last-post.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)</author><pubDate>Sat, 25 Jun 2005 19:19:00 -0700</pubDate><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13950040.post-111975243136720980</guid><description>Oh...that post did work. Most people think it has to do with the ipod, but that's only part of it. Podcasting is taking over the web with it's great content-all available for free. If you are able to surf the net which you are doing now with your PC, then you can listen to podcasts. If you don't like the radio due to it's not-so-good stations then welocome to the world of podcasting. Podcasts are easy (if you know what you're doin') fast, and result in great audio. The reason they call it podcasts, is because of the ipod's capability to play podcasts and all audio content. Ipod's are most commonly used by podcaster's to listen to podcaster's. This all may sound a little strange, and difficult to listen to them on your ipod but it's quite easy once you have the right software. All you need is something like&lt;a href="http://ipodder.sourceforge.net/download/index.php"&gt; ipodder&lt;/a&gt; or &lt;a href="http://www.snapfiles.com/get/doppler.html"&gt;doppler&lt;/a&gt; just download those and plug in the URL to the RSS feed's you want to listen to. You know that guy who I was talking about in my last post named David Lawrence? He has a podcast. And so does Adam Curry. And so does Leo Laporte. There are not too many podcasts but more and more are coming out every month. To get you started off with one to plug into your podcast reciever or aggrogator that is appropriate for all ages, the family tech show podcast which actually is a regular radio show if you live in LA but anyway, &lt;a href="http://www.familytechshow.com/audiocast.xml"&gt;click here to go to the family tech show feed&lt;/a&gt; . Then just plug that into your podcast receiver and the podcasts will automatically download. I am working on my own podcast and once I figure out how to do it I will post back with some &lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;clear &lt;/span&gt;instructions on how to make your own podcast. &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;</description><thr:total xmlns:thr="http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0">0</thr:total></item><item><title>All about Geek Galaxy</title><link>http://geekgalaxy.blogspot.com/2005/06/all-about-geek-galaxy.html</link><author>noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)</author><pubDate>Sat, 25 Jun 2005 08:03:00 -0700</pubDate><guid isPermaLink="false">tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13950040.post-111971243128221830</guid><description>Are you a techno-geek? If so, you have found the right webblog. This blog is all about new things happening in the world of computers and technology. Soon, there will also be a podcast for the blog. I'll try to post a couple times a week but I'm working on a another site that you can soon check out too at www.compuker.net . That will be my computer tech support site. I also have a more personal blog at www.slyswhy.blogspot.com . I used to have a xanga too but I switched to xanga for the great capabilities it has. Xanga won't even let you thoroughly edit your html. It lets you edit certain parts but not the whole thing. That was a huge problem for me because I love to add more to the html of my pages than what they come with. I'm no JavaScript master yet but i'm learning it....so i'll add some cool touches to this site with some scripts. Uhhh...anyway, in case you've been grounded from the computer for the past month you probably don't know about Steve Job's decision to switch from IBM processors to Intel processors. I've heard good and bad about this. Good from David Lawrence on his podcast which you can check out over at www.onlinetonight.com and bad from the source code mini podcast in which Leo Laporte was on. It is going to make them more expensive claims laporte but Lawrence made it sound great....I think it's going to be great-after the prices settle down. I'm not a big apple fan, and I've always said I'd never buy a Mac but now i'm not sure. I used to own a old Mac and it ran so-o-o-o-o-o slow so I gave it away. I couldn't even load a site in less then about 1 minute. Part of this was because of my ISP and part was because of my computer. My ISP was AOL which I can't stand. If any of you are from wambooli then you probably hate them too. Anyway, I'll post back tomorrow....or today...lol.</description><thr:total xmlns:thr="http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0">0</thr:total></item></channel></rss>
