Tethered Cord

Tethered Cord Syndrome can be difficult to diagnose in babies and children since the symptoms may be subtle and insidious over time. The most common symptoms of tethered cord, such as back pain, abnormal gait and urinary accidents are frequently attributed to other causes during childhood. “Tethered spinal cord is frequently misdiagnosed, or identified after symptoms have been long-standing, but proper treatment can lead to a full recovery,” says Holly Gilmer, M.D., Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak.

Tethered Cord (TC) is a disorder in which the spinal cord is “stuck” to a structure within the spine such as dura, scar tissue from a previous operation, a bony spicule or even a tumor. Although most cases are congenital, the condition may not become symptomatic until later in life as the cord continues to grow

and lengthen. TC most often occurs in patients with spina bifida, although it is frequently seen with Chiari malformation. TC can affect people of all ages, but it is most often found in people ranging from infancy to teen. Symptoms of tethered cord become more pronounced during periods of rapid growth due to increased stretching of the spinal cord.

I have to say that I'm disappointed that I didn't receive more of a response to help Amy but I do want to add that I'm thankful for the help that was provided. With Amy's surgery looming ahead, I am motivated to fight that much harder for my friend. God will provide but I can't just sit back and do nothing, even though my last effort was a disappointment. I will keep the donate button on my blog and pray that someone will help. I have some ideas and will post them as they come. God bless to those of you that helped.

Amy Brunning had brain surgery in July 2011 with Dr. Dan Heffez at the Chiari Center in Milwaukee, WI. She had to go all the way to Wisconsin because no one here knew much about Chiari Malformation. Every time she was referred to a Neurologist or Neurosurgeon she always received the same answer. No one had a clue how to help her. It’s been almost 2 years since her surgery and she’s ecstatic to say that she doesn’t have those problems anymore. Now she has a condition called Tethered Cord Syndrome. She is in desperate need of the release surgery. Amy is having seizures and small strokes. She has difficulty walking at times. she looses her memory for short periods of time. This is a degenerative condition. The only treatment is surgery. However, again, no one seems to know what they are dealing with. This is the reason she is trying to get back to Wisconsin.
She is married with two children. Her husband works on a tugboat so he is only with her for about 10 days a month. She has no family here either. She has stated that it is extremely difficult to be a mother of two and hold down a steady job and keep some bit of normalcy to her children’s lives when she is unable to function normally.
She is currently not supposed to be driving at all because she can have a seizure or stroke at any moment. When home she spend a majority of her time in bed because she is usually in so much pain. Amy does continue to work because she has no other choice. Her husband’s work on the tugboat is new employment so he is not making much at this time. When he advances they will be in much better financial shape. But the longer she waits to get this procedure done the more permanent damage there will be.

Last night I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning working on my book. I've got 1,500 words done and counting. The words are flowing smoothly for the most part. Writing about myself is a little different than I thought it would be, I might have to change the names to protect the innocent though.

A new life

The book I had published almost two years ago has found new life in Monroe, Louisiana. With the help of one of my co-workers at Chase bank, Ashley Tyson, I was able to sell some copies of Bedtime Stories. Ashley found out that I had written a book so she asked to see it. I still had some copies that I had dragged with me from Decatur, Illinois. When I brought it in the next day she was fascinated with the prospect of knowing an author. Without realizing what she had done, she started walking around the department with my book showing everyone, those that saw it wanted a copy and she started taking orders. The next day I lugged the stack of books with me to work and ended up selling most of them. Ashley was nice enough to pose with my book, doing her best "Price is Right" pose.

A new job and a new book

I have a new job that I start on the 26th I also have a new book about to be published. My cup overflowith!!!
The new job is at Chase bank, I'll be working in Document Processing, the late shift. It has been challenging for me to get on a new schedule of the night shift but all is going okay.
The new book is called, The Forgiving Heart. It will be available soon according to the publisher. I went with a different publisher this time, the cost was nothing for me to get it done, and the process didn't take nearly the time for the other book. The proofs for the book look great and the cover was done by Bonnie's daughter, Chelsea. She did a great job!!
God has been real good to me and he has opened doors that I never even thought of trying to go through. It is true that He always knows what you need and is always on time!!!

It almost seemed like it would never happen but I got a job and start on the 22nd. I'm glad that wait is over. I'll be working at Chase, in the document processing department. I'm still working on my book, it's coming along fine.

Waiting to be hired

I have been trying to get a job and I'm finding out that that is easier said than done. I have begun to work on my latest book to get me through. This has been very therapeutic for me since it takes up most of my time. It's going to be about Bonnie and me. She has been awesome since I've been here and has acceded all of my expectations. I love her very much and know that we were meant to be together. God was a big part in our coming together and I can't believe that he would drag me all the way from Decatur, Illinois and not provide for us. We have to put our trust in Him.

I will be working on my next book soon. It will be about Bonnie and me. She has a very interesting story and so do I. With the combination of both stories it will make a great book. She is into it and is willing to help put all of the facts in order. I will be working on it soon, right now I'm looking for a job. Let me get that done, then I will be able to concentrate.

After a fifteen year absence I have decided to return to my home town of West Monroe, Louisiana. It is all because of a woman. She is special to me and I have to say that my love for her is so deep that my heart hurts to be away from her. I'm still in Decatur, Illinois until the end of next week, taking care of loose ends. We get to talk every day but it isn't the same as that look or that the touch we can share when we are together. I have not been able to concentrate on any writing for the time being, I'm hopefull that when I get settled with her that the writing bug will bite me again. Until then I will just have to trust that it will return.

I had not realized it had been a few days since I had been on my blog but I've been busy building a relationship with a woman. She's been a welcome diversion but has kept my mind focused on her. She didn't demand my attention my mind drifted willingly toward her. Bonnie and I knew each other as kids and had shared a bond that seemed to connect us spiritually. We shared a connection that followed us even as we parted on seperate journeys in our lives. We recently found each other again on Facebook and found out that the bond that we shared as children was still there. It will be my goal to see her again and make her my wife. There couldn't have been written a more fantastic love story. I can't wait to begin this new chapter in my life. Hurry and turn the page!!!
