Using This Review Package for Preparing for Nursing Exams We suggest that you begin your review by using the practice exams in the book to identify areas of strength and areas in which you need further study. Each exam contains specific questions written in the style of the NCLEX-RN. Answers include rationales for both correct and incorrect answer options to reinforce learning. You may wish to score the results of each practice test and identify areas in which you need further review. To evaluate your results after completing each exam, divide the number of your correct responses by the total number of questions in the test and multiply by 100. For example, if you answered 72 of 90 items correctly, you would divide 72 by 90 and multiply by 100, for a result of 80%. If you answered more than 75% of the items in an area correctly, you are most likely prepared to answer questions in that area on the NCLEX-RN. If you answered fewer than 75% of the questions correctly, you need to determine why. Did you answer incorrectly because of lack of content knowledge or because you did not read carefully? Use this information to guide your study. After reviewing the specific content areas in the practice exams, take the comprehensive exams. These exams more realistically reflect the
NCLEX-RN because each test presents a variety of situations commonly encountered in nursing practice and across all clinical disciplines. Underlying knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the basic sciences, fundamentals of nursing, pharmacology and other therapeutic measures, communicable diseases, legal and ethical considerations, and nutrition are included in items as needed to plan nursing care for individual clients or groups of clients. A systematic research approach includes a step-by-step process of identifying a problem or question, selecting the relevant variables, and then using the most appropriate statistical method. This process can overwhelm beginners, but approaching a research project in an organized way with the knowledge of the basic statistics provided in this text can lead to a new and exciting understanding of how powerful statistics can be. The choice of a particular statistical method depends on the type of question asked (e.g., Are two or more things being compared?), the variables selected (e.g., What are the important components of the problem?), the level of measurement of the variables (e.g., What types of instruments will be used?), and the level of certainty that is required. This text takes the reader through this process. Readers will learn the language of statistics, how to organize the data, and how to describe the data with simple statistics. In my 32 years as a nurse, I have been involved with direct patient care as well as taught a variety of students in nursing, medical assisting, surgical technology, and respiratory therapy. I have also taught those who may not deliver direct patient care, such as students of psychology and clinical lab science.

There is always one constant challenge: to provide students with enough pharmacology knowledge

so that they feel confident as they embark on their health profession careers but not so much that

they are overwhelmed. For those students who will administer medication, pharmacology is critical; for others, it is a subject that will aid their understanding of the patient care relationship, although they may not be directly involved with the patient.
