Verbs are of two kinds

1.Transitive Verb.
2.Intransitive Verb.

1. Transitive Verb

A Verb that has an object is called a Transitive Verb.
example:
Suriyaa wrote a letter.

2.Intransitive Verb

A Verb that does not have an object is called an Intransitive Verb.
example:
Suriyaa ran quickly.

Brief Explain :

Read these sentences:
1. The boy kicks the football.
2. The boy laughs loudly.

In sentence 1, the action denoted by the verb 'kicks' passes over from the doer or subject 'boy' to some object football. The verb kicks is, therefore, called a Transitive verb.

In sentence 2, the action denoted by the verb, 'laughs' stops with the doer or subject 'boy' and does not pass over to an object. The verb 'laugh' is, therefore called a Intransitive verb.

(Transitive means - passive over)
(Intransitive means - not passing over)

A Transitive verb is a verb that denotes an action which passes over from the doer or subject to an object.
An Intransitive verb is a verb that denotes an action which does not pass over to an object, or which expresses a state or being.

The baby sleeps. (State)
She ran a long distance.(Action)
There is a flaw in this diamond.(Being)

Intonation systems in languages are very complicated and difficult to analyze. and linguists disagree about how english intonation works.

English Manor Home

One was in which Intonation seems to be used is to snow how apiece of information fits in with what comes before and after . For instance, a speaker may raise his or her voice when taking over the conversation from-somebody else, or to indicate a change of subject. A rise or fall on a particular word may show that this is the 'centre' of the message -the place where the new information is being given; or it may signal a contrast or a special emphasis. When a speaker ends-on a falling tone, this often expresses some kind of conclusion or certainty: a rising tone at the end of a sentence may express uncertainty , suggest that there is more to be said, or invite another speaker to take over.

Intonation (together with speed, voice quality and loudness) can also say things about the speaker's attitude. For instance, when people are excited or angry they often raise and lower their voices more.

Free Software for Learning English

Free Software for Learning English

There are several reasons to find out about free software for learning English.

Online learning has a number of benefits, and learning English online is no exception. The immediately obvious benefits of learning English online are apparent:

- Flexibility of time,

- Ability to learn material where you are located

- Learn at your own pace

English is spoken worldwide and having a grasp of the language is extremely important to conduct business, communicate with others and get around. Having a firm understanding of the English language will help in both travel and business areas. Learning English online is one of the best methods for quickly getting up to speed with the language. In addition to lessons, there are also a ton of free resources to support language learning.

There are still a lot of countries that lack a high English literacy rate which causes problems in the new, global economy. Many people have come to realize the importance of learning English as a second language, and the lack of time constraints with online learning makes this ideal.

Location is also not a problem with online learning. You can take practice your English lessons if you live in South America or the south Bronx. It doesn't make a difference. If you have a good Internet connection, mail delivery for getting your books, a printer to download your lessons and the web to listen to native speakers, you can master the English language. If you don't have a personal computer in your home, libraries make computers and Internet access easily available.

Learn English online in your pajamas, after work, at 2 a.m. if that's the only time you have free to work. It doesn't matter when you study, and if you need to repeat a lesson, the computer doesn't mind. You can repeat material, re-read, listen to it more than once or watch a video of your lesson as many times as you need in order to understand it. This puts the power of learning in your hands. You can tailor your lessons to your needs.

Another big advantage to learning English online is that most lessons are free. While you don't have to leave your house to learn, you can also access lessons, resource materials and links for free. The quality of the lessons is excellent, and if you went to a language school, you would have to pay for travel costs, hardcover books and the actual cost of the school. Online English lessons are generally free, and you can download all the materials you need.

Learning English online is one of the best ways to learn nowadays. It's quick, easy and cost you nothing. You may decide after taking the English courses online that the best and only way to get an education is via the Internet. Online learning is easy, fun and there when you need it.

As technology advances, it infiltrates itself even further into education and modifies the classroom dynamic. The following are some important educational trends to watch out for in 2012:

More Homeschooling: Historically, homeschooling was seen as a rare phenomenon; however, lately, the concept of homeschooling has become more popular. This individualized, self-directed learning environment is gaining traction which means more resources and support for parents that choose this route. Technology and the internet has assisted with the growth of home school and makes it easier for parents and students to engage with others and learn.

Interactive Classroom: Education programs nationwide are beginning to see more acceptance of interactive tools such as the iPad. The students of today are already proficient with technology and can use it to engage and learn both at home and school. To get the digital generation better involved, teachers are incorporating interactive textbooks, educational games and collaborative projects into their lesson plans.

Visual Learning Techniques: The z generation of students are different from their parents and grandparents in the fact that their visual ability is more developed. Thanks to web browsing and information overloading, visual forms of learning are more effective and gratifying. Curricula is adapting to these changes by focusing more on looking rather than listening.

Online Projects and Collaboration: More and more teachers are beginning to embrace web-based programs to engage students with their classmates and children around the world. They do this through blogging, podcasting, digital media and a variety of other online collaborative projects.

Learning through Games: Instant gratification is a huge need for students these days, which makes learning via games not only more fun, but also more effective. Educational games motivate children to step out of their comfort zone to reach higher levels of knowledge- challenge themselves even further. While these games won't substitute lesson plans, they are a great supplemental resource.

Focus on Critical Thinking: Memorization is always inevitable, but the focus should be more on problem solving and critical thinking. The ability to recall memorized pieces of material have its place in the classroom, but critical thinking is more important for creating students that are ready to take on innovation and entrepreneurship once they get out of school.

Occupation-based Training: Higher educational costs coupled with the fact that many young people are already technically savvy enough to start a career that doesn't require a college degree, may cause many students to join the workforce right out of high school. More students are seeking out entrepreneurial opportunities at a younger age.

Learning in Small Bites: Teachers find that the newer generations of students are harder to teach due to their short attention span caused by the generation y's constant multitasking influence. Educators must now tailor their lesson plans into more manageable, bite-size segments.

In sentences, we usually give more stress to nouns, ordinary verbs, adjectives and adverbs, and less stress-to pronouns, determiners, prepositions, conjunctions and auxiliary verbs.

She was SURE that the BACK of the CAR had been DAMaged.

Many linguists feel that the rhythm of spoken English is based on a regular pattern of stressed syllables. These follow each other at roughly regular intervals. and are pronounced more slowly and clearly. Unstressed syllables are pronounced more quickly and less clearly, and are fitted in between the regular stressed syllables. If several unstressed syllables come together , these are pronounced even more quikly so as not to disturb the rythm. Compare the following two sentences. The second does not take much longer to say than the first although it has three more unstressed syllables , it has the same number of stressed syllables.

There are not many rules to show which syllable of a word will be stressed, one usually has to learn the stress pattern of a word along with its meaning , spelling and pronunciation.

Examples

Stressed on first syllable

AFter, CApital, HAPpen, EXercise, EAsy.

Stressed on Second syllable

inSTEAD, proNOUNCE, aGREEment, parTIcularly.

Stressed on third syllable

enterTAIN, underSTAND, concernTRAtion.

The stressed syllable of a word is the one that can carry an intonation movement

Many short phrases also have a fixed stress pattern. frontDOOR (not FRONTdoor)

LIVing room (not living ROOM)

Related words can have different stress patterns.

to inCREASE an INcrease PHOtograph pho TOgrapher photGRAphic

Stress is the word for the 'Strength' with which syllables are pronounced. In speech, some parts of English words and sentences sound much louder than others. For example, the first syllable of CARpet, the second syllable of inSPECtion or the last syllable of conFUSE are, usually stressed, while the others syllables in these words are not. In the sentence, Don't look at HIM. HE didn't do it, the words him and he are stressed in order to emphasize them. Stressed syllables are not only louder, they may also have longer vowels, and they may be pronounced on a higher pitch

SINGULAR & PLURAL

SINGULAR

English idioms are the everyday common usage of English words and phrases. Textbook English is often cut and dry, it is not the actual way native speaker of English talk. Every language has two parts, that which is written and that which is spoken.

The written form, often referred to as textbook English, contains proper grammar, word usage, and punctuation. It adheres strictly to language rules and often sounds strange when read aloud. It is important to learn this type of English as it follows all the rules and is grammatically correct. Anytime a student will need to read from a textbook or write English on paper they will need to know this proper form of English.

The natural form of English, often referred to as spoken English, is full of color, humor, idioms, slang, jargon, and an often relaxed form of grammar and word usage. Run on sentences, incomplete sentences, little use of grammar and inflection often makes spoken English entertaining and definitely easier on the ears. ESL students will also need to learn this form of English so that they can speak to native speakers of English with confidence and ease.

Spoken English is naturally spoken in informal settings. The idioms, jargon, and other differentiations give it flow, movement, and a conversational tone. When native speakers use natural spoken English they can feel freely creative to use improper forms of word usage and grammar. Those who wish to sound more like native speakers need to make an important habit of learning the local spoken language of the English culture they wish to move into or interact with.

Before you attempt to learn English idioms through regular lesson plans and it is important to consider one important thing, it does not sound right on paper. For instance:

"If ya' really wanna" learn spoken English you've "got no other go" than idioms. when it comes to natural spoken English resources. This website really makes learning English "a piece of cake" when compared to other "not so snazzy" websites. When your there you'll "get a hand up" and really learn English at "a fast clip."

The phrases above which contain the quotation marks were idioms as they would be heard by a native speaker. When written on paper and read they really wouldn't make much sense. In fact, they would look more like a riddle or prose. But when spoken, they take on different meanings and create a sense of color and magic between those who converse. The use of idioms in natural spoken English makes it informal, easy, and interesting.

What are Idioms?

Idioms are word clusters and phrases that only have meaning to their particular language and the local culture that speaks it. One prime example is the phrase "piece of cake." On paper and quite literally it is something we would eat. But when spoken in the right context and in the right locality it takes on the meaning "easy." However, idioms are only understood by certain cultures who speak that language. If, for instance, one would go to a tropical island or to South America and visit and English culture, that idiom may not be readily understood and might even be offensive.

Idioms are simply expressions used when spoken that convey a different meaning that their original one depending on the context they are used in. they may be completely against the rules in formal English, but they are indispensable in spoken English. They are what create local language culture. Some idioms have been used so long by their particular culture that their original meanings have sometimes been lost and their contextual meanings are now engraved in the current user's dialogues.

Over decades and even centuries grow, change, mutate, and take on new meanings. They become deeply rooted into cultures and even become part of advertising and film dialogues.

If you really want to know English "Like the back of your hand" and you want to sound "like common folk," you simply need to learn the idioms of the local native speakers. You can "breathe easy" now that you have such lessons at your fingertips. The website mentioned above provides a comprehensive list of resources that will prove invaluable to you and powerful to your ability to absorb the spoken form of English.
It is the hope of many people, whether for personal or professional reasons, that they will be able to learn English easily. The very idea of learning a new language can often make even the most capable learners nervous. Fortunately, there are people who learn English well every single day, and with the right planning and work, you can be one of those people

Make a Plan

Although no one can guarantee that you will be able to learn English easily with any one particular method, it can definitely be guaranteed that without planning in advance, you will not learn English very easily at all. Whether you plan to learn English by natural methods such as watching English television, listening to English radio, and conversing with people in English as much as possible, or you prefer a more study oriented approach such as taking an English course, or perhaps a combination of the two methods, if you don't have a clear plan and goals, learning English will not come easily.

Organic Language Acquisition

Organic language acquisition is a natural method of learning a language the way a child might learn to speak his or her native tongue. This is a very natural language learning method, and if you are able to totally immerse yourself in the English world, you will certainly be able to learn English easily. Immersion in the language requires that you do not speak any language other than English. To practice this method, watching television, listening to the radio, reading magazines and newspapers, cooking from recipes, and following various verbal and written instructions, should all be in English. This is particularly effective for non-English speakers who have recently moved to an English country.

Curriculum Based Language Acquisition

For those who prefer a more structured environment when learning English, curriculum based language acquisition might be a good choice. Many people are able to learn English easily by enrolling in an English class, using at-home English learning computer software, or listening to an English language instructional course on CD while driving in their cars. There are also many workbooks, flashcards, and self-tests that can be used to support this method of learning English

Combination Approach

For most people a combination of the above two approaches is the fastest and best way to learn English easily. If a person only goes to classes but never engages in real-life conversations, they will have a very difficult time becoming totally fluent, and a person who is immersed in a language verbally but never learns the specific grammatical rules will not be able to use his or her English in a professional setting very effectively. Therefore, if possible, the English learner should engage in a curriculum based approach to learning English, but should also be sure to engage in conversation with and listen to native English speakers as much as he or she can manage in order to facilitate the quickest learning possible.

Quick Tips

If a person is determined to learn English easily, he or she should also be sure to adhere to certain guidelines that will help them in their mission. First, be certain that your family, friends, and colleagues all know that you are trying to learn English, and that whenever possible, they should speak to you in English rather than your native tongue. Secondly, do not focus on just a single element of language acquisition at the expense of others. For example, it is not advisable to only attempt to speak the language but neglect to read it, write it, or listen to it being spoken. In order to be successful at obtaining fluency, a person should be attentive to all the different language elements.

Because English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the entire world and can be instrumental to a person's personal and professional success, it is no wonder that there are so many people intent on learning to speak it with fluency. With the right planning and a lot of determination, anyone can learn to speak English quickly and easily. Combining an immersion approach with a curriculum based program will afford almost anyone the right foundation for a lifetime of speaking English. As long as the English makes a concrete plan with a set goal and adheres to it, he or she will be speaking English in a very short amount of time.
One of the main advantages of a free English learning course is that it doesn't cost you any money. As long as you have access to the Internet on your computer, you can take such a course from anywhere in the world and become fluent in the English language.

There are lessons for beginners and those who have some knowledge of English. If you can speak the language, but you are not so good at writing or spelling, then you can gain valuable knowledge from taking such a course. The courses have resources for learners of all ages, so that a whole family can learn at the same time. You can still continue to live and work in your home country and set a schedule for your studies at any time of the day or night.

There is no doubt that parts of the course will prove difficult for you. Even native speakers have problems with some aspects of

English grammar and often have to use a dictionary to help them with meanings and spellings of words. You should not let yourself become frustrated when you hit a difficult point in your learning. It should be something that you enjoy. For this reason, there are games you can play to help relieve the monotony and help you increase your vocabulary at the same time. All learners can enjoy and benefit from playing word games, such as Memory and Hangman and in completing word search puzzles.

When you have a buddy to study with, such as a friend or family member, you can help each other. When one person has difficulty with some aspect, the other person may understand it and be able to offer assistance or an explanation. If you are studying alone, you should set a time when you are going to access the online site and inform others in your household that you can't be disturbed for that period of time.

Don't set a few hours for each study time because it will make the time seem longer and you may get bored easily. Short study periods are best, so if you set 30 minutes a day, you will not have any problems with completing the course. You will certainly find some lessons easier than others and be able to accomplish more on some days than others. Set goals for yourself that are achievable and then celebrate your successes.

The best thing about taking online courses to help you learn English is that you can review the lessons as many times as you feel it is necessary. Complete the practice exercises and when you have some of the answers wrong, go back and find where you made a mistake. Even if you do not do well on a quiz, review the lesson and retake the quiz. Take advantage of the listening and reading activities to improve your own speech and comprehension. Even though these lessons are free, there is no limit on the number of times you can review the material.

Even if you are trying to learn English online, you need to surround yourself with people who not only speak English, but also speak English well. If you know people that live near you who are native English speakers, spend time with them, and ask them to speak English when you do. If this is not possible, use your online English school as a place to go to surround yourself with English speakers and text written in English. Listen to recordings of people speaking English or talk to English speakers on the phone. This will help you learn not only proper grammar, but also correct pronunciation.

Learn a Variety of Words

If you want to be a good English speaker who can speak like a native when needed, you need to learn to speak using a variety of terms and vocabulary words. The more limited your vocabulary is, the more like a foreigner you will sound when you speak. Focus on the traditional vocabulary found in your English lessons, but also learn from native speakers. Learn how to use slang terms properly, as this is a key aspect of speaking like a native speaker. Avoid using too much slang, though, as this is tacky and can make it look as though you are trying too hard.

As you learn the language, focus not only on the words and their meanings, but also the way the words come together to make phrases. For instance, the word "kick" can mean many different things depending on how it is used in a phrase. When you say, "He kicked the ball," you are using the word as a verb that means to strike the ball with the foot. On the other hand, you could say, "I get a kick out of that T.V. show." This means that you enjoy the T.V. show, and has nothing to do with striking something with a foot. Learning how phrases come together in English will come with continued submersion in the language.

Start Thinking in English

Thinking in a language is the only way to truly learn it. When you can start thinking in English, you will start getting a true grasp of the language. If you have to take every English phrase you hear and translate it mentally into your native tongue, or if you must take your native tongue and translate it into English in your mind before you speak, you will find it difficult to truly grasp the language's grammar.

Devote Enough Time to Immersion

The more time you can spend immersed in English, either through spending time with native speakers, listening to recordings of English being spoken, or reading the language, the faster you will successfully learn it. Every chance you get, interact with the language. If you are on the Internet, search English sites. If you are reading the newspaper, choose an English publication. Simply logging in to your online English school or heading to your daily English lesson is not sufficient. You must learn to think in English, and that only happens by spending quality time with the language every single day.

1. Use A Language Learning Software. More interactive than your typical language courses and cheaper than taking a real class, language learning software offers the most cost-effective medium of instruction for anyone studying English as a second language. The participatory nature of a software course coupled with the flexibility it offers in scheduling and time makes it an obvious choice for anyone serious about learning new languages.

2. Talk to yourself. There's no faster way to learn English than to speak it and you can do it even when there's no one around by practicing with yourself. Take a phone book and read the numbers aloud using the new language, watch TV and make comments in English or pick random words out of a dictionary and translate them.

3. Talk to English speakers. Spend time with English speakers and communicate with them using the vernacular. Not only will you be practicing your own speaking skills but you'll be picking up nuances they might have learned along the way.

4. Listen to English songs. Listening to songs are a great way to improve upon your English, allowing you to hear the language used in both a specific context along with helpful demonstrations of proper delivery. Just make sure to exercise discretion when trying to copy the language used in rap songs and you should be fine. A'ight?

5. Unleash your English skills to the world. When someone converses with you in English, don't hesitate to respond in kind. Start a free blog and write posts in the English language. You'll make mistakes but that will only help accelerate your development. Use the language freely and watch yourself improve by leaps and bounds.

Why is English so important?

Humans were not meant to spend our life alone. Our experiences, abilities to learn from those experiences, and our capacity to share the lessons learned are part of what fuels human progress. Think about it: today, the development of technology is accelerating. This is mainly because our ability to communicate has also received a huge boost, thanks to the development of mobile phones and the Internet.

Of course, the technology to communicate would be useless without a shared language. People actually use many different languages in order to communicate. There are two methods that people use to communicate today. They are:

1) Non-verbal - This is communication without the use of words. Although people immediately think of body language when they encounter the term "non-verbal" communication, there are actually other means that people use to express their ideas and share their experiences without using words. Take music and painting, for example. People create art and music in order to share their vision of the world with others. This is communication. Another common way that people communicate non-verbally is through their appearance - what you wear and how you present yourself depends on how you wish to be perceived by others. Non-verbal communication is important in that it allows people to communicate instantly and unconsciously. As they say: a picture is worth a thousand words.

2) Verbal - Of course, words form a very important part of communication today. It is through words that people best explain their ideas and share knowledge. It is through the use of words that people are able to clearly communicate concepts that lead to progress and development.

In order to truly be a part of the world and its progress, you need to learn how to effectively communicate verbally, and today this requires learning English.

Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns. There are various ways they can be used depending on whether the pronoun is the subject or object or is reflexive. For example:

Subject pronouns are: I, you, he, she, it, we, they.

Object pronouns are: me, you, him, her, it, us, them.

Reflexive pronouns: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves.

Now we have split the pronouns into groups, we can look at the rules of use.

When you use a subject pronoun (which is also known as nominative case), it can be the subject of a sentence, for example, "I am a student", "Jane and he are colleagues" but when the pronoun is used after the verb "to be", the pronoun renames the subject. The "to be" verbs are as follows: is, are, was, were, will be, may be, may have been. Here is an example of a pronoun used after a "to be" verb:

"It is I who wrote the letter." Here, "I" comes after the "to be" verb "is" and the subject is renamed "it". So, the subject pronoun needs to be used instead of the object pronoun.

We use an object pronoun (also known as objective case) when the pronoun is the direct object (not the subject), the indirect object or the object of the preposition.

Here are some examples:

"John met her at the library." Here, "her" is the direct object.

"Sue will give him his book back." In this example, "him" is an indirect object because you can, in your mind, put the word "to" in front of "him" (Sue will give to him). In this case, "book" is the direct object. Let's look at other examples:

"Between you and me, this book is terrible." In this case, "you" and "me" are the objects of a preposition (between).

Lastly, we shall turn to reflexive pronouns. For example, you can write "She did it herself" but you would never write or say "Give the book back to John or myself". In this last sentence, "myself" does not refer back to another pronoun or noun - the correct pronoun is "me" (an object pronoun).

As you can, there are lots of different ways to use pronouns and it is important to use them correctly when speaking or writing.

How to enlarge one's Vocabulary

It is easy to say, 'Enlarge your vocabulary, first that you may enter upon the privileges of a cultivated women: and secondly, that you may be able to tell the truth easily and accurately'. But it is another and more difficult matter to prescribe the means by which this is to be done.

Every girl must, to a large degree, work out her own method. The reading of the best books and conversation with cultivated fold both which help to the free use of words. The dictionary is the best friend for your task. Never allow a strange word to pass unchallenged.

Usually, it is wise to look it up at the moment. If that is impossible, it must be written firmly on the memory and traced at the first opportunity. It is good to encourage in yourself the habit of drawdling reaps a harvest.
If you look out the window and say, "There are men in the garden," anyone who hears you gets a certain idea of what you see. If you said, "There are three men in the garden," he would get a better idea. If you say, "There are three tall young men in the garden," he gets a still better idea. Three, tall, and young are all adjectives. They are said to "modify" the word men, which is a noun, because they give a clearer picture of what the noun means. A part of speech is a kind of word that has a particular duty when you say it or write it. Noun is a part of speech; the duty of a noun is to tell what a thing is.

Verb is a part of speech; the duty of a verb is to tell what something does. Adjective is a part of speech; the duty of an adjective is to tell what a thing is like. An adjective is used to modify a noun, which is, to describe it, to tell how it is different from other things that might be thought of when that particular noun is used. Sometimes a noun does not mean anything at all unless there is an adjective to describe it or limit it. If you say, "It is a day," it means nothing. If you say, "It is a cold day," the adjective cold gives your words meaning. the kinds of adjective An adjective is said to be attributive when it comes before the noun it modifies. If you speak of "a sweet apple," sweet is an attributive adjective modifying the noun apple.

An adjective is said to be predicative when it comes after the noun it modifies. If you say, "The apple is sweet," sweet is a predicative adjective modifying the noun apple. A predicative adjective can be used only after the verb to be in one of its forms (am, is, are, was, were, been); or a word that might be replaced by a form of the verb to be, for example seem or become; or after a verb that expresses one of our senses: feel, look, sound, taste, smell. You can say, He is healthy, He looks healthy, He seems healthy. Or, The cloth feels smooth, The apple tastes sweet, The music sounds good, The perfume smells good. Healthy and smooth and sweet and good are predicative adjectives. In the English language, adjectives often appear in other kinds of sentence, different from these, because a word or words that would make it clear that they are adjectives have been dropped out-- being "understood," as it is said-because the sentence is perfectly clear without them.

Sometimes it is a certain noun that is dropped, as in the sentence, for instance, "The blind read with their fingers." If you put the word "people" after blind, you can see that blind is an adjective. In cases like this, the adjective is always preceded by the word the, and its use is called substantive. This is only one of many technical terms in grammar. You do not have to know them all to recognize adjectives and use them properly. comparison of adjectives Often it is desirable for an adjective to show not only what a noun is like, but also to show how it compares with other things of the same kind.
