Paul Curreri.

Paul is one of my all-time favs AND he happens to be a friend. I love him and his music. He manages to write beautiful songs that can still make you giggle every once in a while. And still to this day, one of my favorite evenings was spent with my friend Amanda and Paul. Listening to his then new and unreleased record, The Velvet Rut, drinking wine and raspberry beer, and Paul yelling at Amanda not to use her old "collectable quarters" to buy more cigarettes. According to him... "they'd be worth money someday!"...heh! Still makes me laugh. Best night in EVER!

He also happens to be married to another one of my favorite's, Devon Sproule. I love to see them together, which is rare. I love that you can see how much they love each other when they sing together and that makes my heart happy. They just moved to Berlin, and that makes my heart a little sad. But I'm so excited that they are both doing so well over there!! But friends, please don't stay over there all the time, America loves you too!

I love that they are some serious musicians but they don't take themselves too seriously!

I'm always on the lookout for cute iPhone cases. Well, let me tell you...I found the mother load!! This website called Society 6 has all sorts of awesome images that you can order in print form, t-shirt, or iPhone case. It's so fun! The one I ended up getting makes me smile (and sometimes giggle) and I like that! Not everyone gets it, and I'm okay with that. And some people get it and still don't think it's funny, it's soft humor...BUT...it makes ME happy and that's all that matters. It's from a company called Indie Cases and they are now only selling through Everlane. These also make me giggle, and why shouldn't we laugh at our iPhone everyday;)

Champagne, you desperately need #4. Who cares if you don't have an iPhone...you NEED it;)

Auction Adventure

During my short little vacation from teaching, I went to my first "real"auction. I sorta grew up in one but I was a kid and it wasn't an antique auction. My dad used to teach a class at a local college on making furniture for the One Special Christmas Auction. So every year we would be at the auction all day long. I also have very vivid memories of Dad bringing my brother and I to the class some nights and making us stay in the "office" part of the wood shop. In case you have never been in a wood shop...the "office", of a wood shop, is not at all what you are picturing. It's a smallish room with concrete floors, a few old discarded office chairs, tables, clip boards with orders or plans nailed to the wall, photographs roughly taped to the wall, a radio, a phone and most likely a first aid kit. All of this is also completely covered in dust, wood dust - the best smelling kind! So, my memories of those nights include my brother pushing me around on the office chairs, dancing to Michael Jackson, and trying to hold the rabbit ears just right so my brother could watch tv. Good memories.

Anyway, Mom and I went to an antique furniture auction at Belk Auction Company. We really had no idea what to expect but ended up having a great time and walking away with a few things...all of which were wickedly cheap! Mom had a ton of fun bidding, so much fun that I had to hold her arm down a few times.

What we went home with...

I'm pretty sure we over paid on this one.

But it was mom's first time bidding and she was a little excited.

I've been looking for one of these forever!

I've even been thinking about making one.

But I don't think I could make one for $5

A few things I learned...

bring cash - Cause they only take cash

only bring the amount of cash you are willing to spend - this will help you not overspend

have a list of things you are looking for or collecting

make sure you are all checked in before the auction starts - If you have a card with a number on it that the auction company gave you - then you are all set

make sure you know all the rules etc.

pay for your item right after you win it because there is a buyer's premium that will be added to your cost and you don't want to run out of cash when you go up to pay

go early and look at everything before hand

bring a notepad or keep track on your phone what items you are interested in and write down their lot number

If you can, look up on the internet what the going rate is of the item you are interested in - that way you can know how much you are willing to spend - write that number next to the item

Bring a friend or family member that will help you stick to budget for each item

bring boxes and newspaper to protect your items that you win

If you plan on bidding on a larger item...make sure it will fit in your car

Bring a cushion to sit on incase the ones they have are gone...cause the metal chairs are awful

be prepared to be there awhile

don't make any sudden movements

have fun

Monkey Puppet

My friend Karrie (who just started her own blog...yay!)got a very, very special hand-knit Christmas gift. We have an inside joke about monkey puppets so I decided that I would make her one. I picked a finger pepper, although mine is more like a two-finger puppet:( I didn't think I needed to check gauge on a finger puppet, oh well, now I know.

Isn't he sweet?! Almost as sweet at Karrie!! You can make your own monkey puppet too!! It's a free pattern I found HERE!

Herringbone Neck Warmer

I knit this one for my friend Greta for Christmas. The yarn is hand-dyed from The Fibre Studio. I saw it...and just had to have it. And ut's super, super soft. The PATTERN is a free one from Loop Knits.

I loved learning the herringbone stitch and love the result. It might be my absolute favorite. You will definitely be seeing more of it from me :)

Jake's Good Eats

My folks have been dying to take me to Jake's Good Eats. So during the Christmas Holiday we all went. I couldn't believe how fun the place was. So many great old things. I had spent the day playing on my new iPad and watching American Pickers so it seemed fitting to end my day at Jake's with all their "picked" items. It was packed thanks to their groupon and their spot on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives ...BUT... that gave me time to walk around and snag some photos of some of their great stuff.

The food was really yummy and the service was great. The peach cobbler was definetly my favorite though...yum yum!!

I don't think I put my iPad down the whole time I was there;) I'm pretty sure that's what I'm doing in the shot below...I'm officially addicted!

Mara Shawl

I knit this with FREE yarn given to me by my good friend Angela (from Button Bird Designs). She is continually giving me this beautiful gifts. So I decided that I would use some of the yarn she gave me and make her something.

The pattern is The Mara Shawl by Madelinetosh. You can download it for free on ravelry. It went eally quickly until the last few rows. It would be a great newbie knit!! I used Noro Silk Garden yarn which again, was free!!

I couldn't wait to give it to her...so I visited her at work;) and hand delivered it. The look on her face was so woeful. Angela, you are so beautiful - inside AND out!!

Never-Ending Etsy Love {party time}

We are back at Amelies this month! I looked into reserving us a space in the back...but that would cost $ and I can't do that right now. So, it will be the same as usual...but just maybe the big table will be open again.

Oh and don't forget to grab a carmel salted brownie too:) ALSO - don't feel like you have to knit hexipuffs to come. If you just aren't quite at that level, that's okay. I've pretty much been listening to Mumford and Sons nonstop, all month long. Sorry, downstairs neighbor, hope you like them. This one is my favorite and gets played the most...

I know I've posted this exact video before...but I just love it, and needed to do it again. At the bottom of this post I'll post some of my other favorite's from their record, Sigh No More.

Do you remember me telling you about my friend Rodney, who passed? Well he was the doorman/bartender/personality at The Evening Muse in NoDa. About 8 or so years ago I worked there and that's how I got to know him. I've talked with so many folks from all around the country who have been touched by Rodney's life. Singer-songwriter, Eliot Broson is one of those folks. Although I don't know him personally, I feel like we are bonded by our love for Rodney. He wrote this beautiful song about Rodney and I'd really love for you to give it a listen...

Also here is a quick look at the beautiful memorial we had for Rodney in NoDa. It ends with a very special New Orleans style Funeral March - Rodney would have loved it.

Gift Wrap DIY

I had some friends ask about my gift wrap this year. So I thought I'd write up a little DIY about it. Cause it was so so simple...

You will need...

brown box or lunch sack or craft paper

double sided tape

glitter

baker's twine

{I might have to keep this guy out, I love looking at him}

Letter Stamps

Packaging Tape

#1 Wrap your gift in a brown box or brown craft paper or brown lunch sack. I used packaging tape - it seems to work the best on the brown paper products.

#2 Then take your double sided tape and make a design on the wrapped gift. If you are worried about doing a design or a letter just start with a straight line. They look good too!

{I know it's hard to see, but it's clear!}
{I made a snowflake or star}

#3 Once your design is finished, sprinkle your glitter over the tape. You will want to do this over a tray or paper plate or something.

Make sure the whole area is completely covered.

#4 Turn your work so that glitter side is standing up on your tray and give your gift a good tap or two or three. You can reuse the glitter that comes off on the next gift.

{if you use tinsel glitter like I did...some of the pieces will stand straight up. I think it really makes it POP!}

#5 Then tape (packaging tape again) one end of your bakers twine to the back. Wrap the twine around the box as many times as you want. Then cut and tape the other end on the back as well.

# 6 Next, stamp your letters onto your gift. If you don't have a letter stamp set and you don't want to purchase one...just write on the gift or tape a gift tag.

#7 Look at your gift and smile - because, trust me, the receiver smile too :) But be aware...they will have glitter everywhere when they open it:)

It's a free app for your iPhone that turns your photos into postcards that you can either have printed and mailed for you (all for $1.99) or you can email, text, Facebook, and tweet them for free. Pretty stinking awesome! So, while we were spending all day and night in the nursing home with the wonderful hospice folks...I mailed all my Christmas Cards through my iPhone with just a few clicks. Distractions are wonderful things...but if they can also help you get things done...Brilliant! Here's what it looked like...

Rags to Stitches

The day after Christmas I was playing on my new iPad and got freaked out that someone (definitely not me!) had got something sticky on the cover. Yes, I know that's what the cover is for...to protect the iPad from stickiness. BUT, I wasn't having it! I quickly ordered a cozy for it. I had been eyeing this one for as long as I've been wanting an iPad.

I can't believe how fast it got here! I picked it up from the Post Office YESTERDAY! Pretty impressive. It's from this cute little company called Rags to Stitches. Check them out HERE. They also have a blog you can follow HERE. They call them "snuggies"... heh! You can get them for your iPad, Laptop, and Tablet. I love handmade and I love pretty...so this little guy is a winner in my book!

Christmas Day was a refreshing day for our family. We seem to becoming a smaller and smaller family unit as the years pass. This year was especially hard for us - first holiday without Grannie and Grandpa and then my brother was staying in California. So, it was just Grandma, Mom, Dad, and me. Too small! At least we had Bodhi too:)

Anyway, we went to Grandma's for Christmas eve dinner and for Christmas. It was refreshing for us because Mom and Dad didn't have to deal with decorating and cleaning and stressing out. We got to be together and just celebrate Christmas and not see all of the other tasks we needed to do, like plan a funeral:(

I was so excited for everyone to see their wrapped gifts that I had put so much time and love into! And they were my needed distraction from all of the sadness. So I made my family pose with each gift. Yes, I know I'm a dork. But I LOVED the wrapping this year and wanted to remember it forever :) And now you get to see them all too...if you don't care just scroll down and check out with Bodhi and Wilbur got for Christmas...
