Real Weddings: Christine & Dan

I had so much fun working with Christine and Dan on their dream wedding. What a lovely couple they are. They have such a wonderful support system and their family and friends really reflect who they are...plus they really knew how to party!

Christine gave me creative freedom in designing her wedding. During our first meeting I told her that her colors would be black, light gray, and pale pink and that we would have floating black crystal chandeliers on the rooftop and she said, Okay. Everything else developed from there. All she wanted to do was approve everything and see samples before she committed to them. I really appreciated that she trusted me in capturing who she and Dan are and reflecting that in one of the most special days in their lives.

Their wedding took place in Santa Barbara on a beautiful August day. Let's just say the Khardashians' may have been partying on the same day, but they had nothing on this couple! The ceremony was held in the Mural Room at the Santa Barbara Courthouse and their wedding reception was held at the beautiful rooftop of the Canary Hotel.

I had such a great time creating this wedding and even had a better time celebrating with Christine and Dan. Thank you both for letting me be a part of your wedding day!

I had the wonderful opportunity to plan and design Racquel and Lynn's destination wedding in Riviera Maya Mexico!

On the day of their engagement, year to date of their actual wedding, the bride called me up to book me and start the planning of her destination wedding. She told me she wanted it to be a unique destination, but also somewhere they love. As fate may have it, the week after she called I was going to Riviera Maya Mexico for a wedding conference...so I doubled up and did site visits for her while I was down there. One of the places that I visited was Xcaret and once I was on the grounds and saw the venues I knew this place was it. I sent pictures via text while I was there and within a day we had a signed contract and started planning the destination wedding of her dreams!

Racquel and Lynn's wedding took place on September 27, 2011 at sunset in the gorgeous St. Francis of Assisi church that overlooks the Caribbean Ocean in Xcaret followed by a reception at La Isla an underground cave venue with a river running through it...also located at Xcaret. Their guests dined on a gourmet four course meal (don't think your typical banquet food) that was one of the BEST meals I have had in a long time. The presentation, the flavors, everything was perfect. When the entrees were served, we surprised their guests with a full 30-minute Mayan stage show that brought the region we were in alive. Their guests partied well past midnight....and they didn't let the humidity stop them from enjoying themselves. We were all soaked at the end of the evening from dancing, but it truly was a memorable experience for all.

The staff at Xcaret, especially Gabriella and Graciela in the events department, were so dedicated and truly loved what they do that they executed my vision to the book and for the first time...in a long time, I actually got to enjoy and be part of the wedding festivities. I loved all the vendors that I worked with in Riviera Maya Mexico and also glad that I have formed a great working relationship with some new US vendors too. I can't wait to work with them all again!

we had such a great time during hair and makeup at the Occidental Grand Xcaret. Lots of laughs with Racquel and her siblings as well as their mom.

Racquel went from the Occidental Grand Xcaret hotel to Xcaret via a traditional "trajinera." It really added to the feel of the event.

I absolutely love this photo. I remember this vividly as we were about to open the church doors for Racquel and her parents to walk in, Racquel got teary eyed...as her parents joyfully anticipated the walk down the aisle. This picture captures that moment perfectly!

What a fantastic time I had planning Maya and Eric's wedding! Their wedding was truly significant and had so many personal touches that you couldn't help but cry on their wedding day...pure love! Everything from walking in to an acoustic version of Sea of Love played by a guitarist to walking out as husband and wife to a full on mariachi band was just magical.

This is the second wedding I have done for this family and the great thing about working with them is that they are all really passionate about the process of being wed. It makes it so much easier for me when you can throw out an idea to the couple and they can vision it either working for them or not. Working with Maya and Eric and their families was filled with lots of laughs, conversations, and passion. I can't wait to plan the next one.

Maya and Eric were truly unique. The road to matrimony for them was a journey so "the journey" was reflected in every aspect of the wedding. From their invitations that included a cd of their favorite road tunes, to vintage postcards for their escort cards reflected that journey. The floral were a mix of of wild flowers and sunflowers, just like it was picked on the side of the road, were placed in mismatched jars, vases, and other vessels found in the home of Eric's mom. We also infused Maya's Mexican culture in the venue and added custom papel picados and luminarias. All in all it was M&E throughout the evening!

Maya had three dresses to wear for her wedding day, but opted for two. She wore a fabulous high low cut gown for the ceremony and than changed to a simple white summer dress for the reception. They walked from the church to the reception venue just so they can have some "alone" time together...of course they had a photographer there too!

Congratulations Maya and Eric! Thank you for letting me become part of your family!

Real Weddings: Mina & Chris

I had the wonderful privilege of planning and designing Mina & Chris' intimate, but fabulous 2011 Fourth of July nuptials. Their wedding was suppose to occur in May 2012...but with a quick change of plans, I had to plan their dream destination wedding in just three weeks! Funny how things fall into place.

This wedding was pretty unique for me, and it seems to be the trend with other couples I am working with as well. I never met the Chris and Mina until, literally, two days before their wedding day. I didn't even know what they looked like...but I did take a peek at their Facebook pages, just so I would have a clue and get a sense of their style. We did not friend each other until after the wedding. Let's just say I had some anxiety at some of my choices for them, especially the estate they were having their wedding and staying at, which was booked solely on my recommendations!

I picked up Mina on the curb near Nordstroms in Santa Barbara to get her dress pressed...she had literally just gotten off the plane and was walking around downtown SB with luggage and dress in hand! Mina and Chris lives in VA. The planning and design was all done through email...literally! I think we spoke once on the phone and that was before they hired me! Everything from the estate to all the selections were done with the email approval process...some things they just left up to me to do and trusted my judgement...scary considering I've never met them as a couple...but I was also confident in my ability to create a fabulous event. I am just happy they loved their wedding and was pleased with the outcome.

Their wedding was held on a beautiful Fourth of July Day, clear in Santa Barbara, with beautiful 360 degree views all the way to the ocean from the estate. The wedding took place during the early evening just in time for them to sit down and enjoy a sunset dinner! The party ended with two firework shows which the family enjoyed while having s'mores at a firepit on the estate.

Their wedding was surrounded by immediate family only and it made such a touching moment throughout the day. It was great to be part of their family for the day and to see the love they have surrounding them! Congratulations Mina and Chris!

Songs You Will be Hearing at 2011 Summer Weddings!

We all know how music can make or break a wedding...better yet the party...but how do we know what songs are going to make your guests BUST A MOVE? Well it's hard to say, really, as every wedding/party/event has it's own vibe and guests. But choosing the type of music you want your DJ or band to play is an important detail as you have a better insight on what your guests like to party too.

Most DJ's and bands also have a great way of feeling out the crowd and finding ways to keep the dance floor packed and moving. Personally, I have worked with fantastic DJs that really know how to make a party a party and keeps the tunes coming and the dance floor hopping! But it is important to give your DJ or band some background on what your guests are like and what they may be in to music wise! I realize you can't make everyone happy with your music choices, but I guarantee you will help elevate the party to the atmosphere you are hoping to achieve by giving some background on your peeps.

Real Weddings: Leilani & Josh - TLC's Battle of The Wedding Designers - Aloha Wedding Bells

That's right...I won TLC's Battle of the Wedding Designers Aloha Wedding Bells Episode (Season 1 Episode 4)! I had the pleasure of competing with two of America's Best Designers and my friends and colleagues, Steve Kemble and Michelle Buckley. I am happy to have beaten the two of them and have the opportunity to design and plan Leilani and Josh's dream wedding!

I wanted to send a special thank you to the vendors who helped me out on TLC's Battle of the Wedding Designers. I appreciate all your help and for being there to make sure that I came in budget for Leilani and Josh's wedding. You are all incredible people and I could have not done this without your support and friendship. Here's to many years of working together and giving all our clients what we do best...quality service with a smile!

The Battle of the Wedding Designers journey was such a great experience and I met some wonderful people along the way. I hope that I can do more of the shows in the future, because I would really love to show more of what I am capable of doing. Plus the challenges are fun. There's a lot of design in me that's wanting to come out and be seen.

What I am most thankful for though is meeting Leilani and Josh and having the opportunity to design their dream wedding with an incredible group of vendors that I love working with! Here's a few photos of some of the details, taken by the incredible Vanessa Honda and Sheena Sales (yes my cousin) of Vanessa Honda Photography, on Leilani and Josh's wedding day.

This was the final product for the floral. Leilani and Josh wanted the pink and green concept. The original plan was to do really plain (black and white with a splash of color - yellow was the original splash for my pitch) which is below.

For the guest book, I opted to do a painted guest book that is now a piece of art that hangs in Leilani and Josh's home. Additionally, I used Capiz shells for both the escort cards and for the wish tree. The wish tree was shells were later transformed into wind chimes for Leilani and Josh's home.

We had two types of cake due to Leilani's food allergies. The smaller of the two cakes was vegan and gluten free. The cake was designed after my overall inspiration of a Hawaiian Quilt.

The Plumeria wedding ring was made to reflect Leilani's favorite flower which was used throughout the wedding space as well as accent flowers.

Thank you to the following individuals and companies for bringing my design and concepts for Leilani and Josh's wedding come true! For TV purposes we had to produce this wedding for $12,500 and we could not have done it without the help of some of my wonderful friends. These are the individuals I have to thank with all my heart! Real Weddings: Elaine & Stephen

I am really excited to share these photos with you all. I had the pleasure of helping design and plan Elaine & Stephen's 10-10-10 wedding in Palm Springs at the incredible Elrod House, the epitome of Palm Springs Modernism! Elaine and Stephen are not your typical couple and while they got opted for an iconic location, they kept the overall feel and tone...simple.

Decked out in vintage attire, Elaine found her perfect wedding gown and Stephen's jacket at a vintage store in Los Angeles. Perfectly fit for this offbeat couple and a definite throwback to the Mad Men era of the early 1960s. Additionally, they down played everything else...what more do you need when you are in one of the most recognizable architectural homes in the world, surrounded by Chihuly Glass, and have one of the best views in Palm Springs. You can't really go over the top or you just really mess up the environment. So using what you have to be the wow is exactly what they did.

Breaking with other traditions, this couple also opted to do some really cool touches for their wedding day. First off they served their guests dessert first! Following their ceremony the couple opted for a cupcake reception before bringing their guests to a local restaurant for a nice sit down dinner. They served each of their guests cupcakes in a bowl with a red Chinese soup spoon - infusing part of their culture into their quirky dessert hour. Additionally, with the cupcakes, Elaine and Stephen scoured LA flea markets to get enough glass milk bottles to serve milk to their guests with the cupcakes. it was a great way to end the evening at Elrod House before heading to downtown Palm Springs.

In Chinese culture, the tea ceremony is part of the wedding ceremony and it's when the bride and groom prepare and offer grandparents and parents a cup of tea...a sign of respect and acceptance by the families. Elaine and Stephen put their own twist to this ceremony and offered green tea cupcakes to their elders and parents. It was a great spin on a tradition!

I love quirky weddings when the bride and groom put who they are into their day. Showing who you are on one of the most important days of your life is something truly magical.

Icon Bride: Kate Middleton aka HRH The Duchess of Cambridge and HRH Princess William of Wales

Kate Middleton just got married a few hours ago, but I know there are brides clamoring to get her wedding day look. The new Duchess of Cambridge/Princess William of Wales wore a beautiful A-line ball gown designed by Sarah Burton, creative director of Alexander McQueen had signature McQueen all over it with it's contrast of traditional and modern and stunning beauty. Duchess Silk mixed with Lace and hand embroidery on the skirt transformed a simple gown to a gown fit for the future Queen of England! This is the look of the modern bride - simple elegance, understated beauty, timeless styling, couture, and beaming with joy. HRH The Duchess of Cambridge topped off the ensemble with a Chantilly Lace veil, diamond earrings given to her by her parents, and a borrowed Cartier tiara halo from the Queen.

In capturing this look for the non-royals'...here's my suggestion for getting the "Kate" feel for your own wedding.

For her second gown, for the black tie evening celebration, the Duchess of Cambridge donned another Sarah Burton designed gown, this time, a strapless A-line dress with a diamante waist line and a white angora bolero. She kept it simple and elegant all day long.

The Royal Wedding of Prince William & Catherine Middleton

Congratulations William and Kate!

For many of us, we have since Prince William literally grow up before our eyes...he's sorta like the true child of the world! On this momentous day, when the Prince marries his Princess, we celebrate with Will and Kate as they share their devotion of love and commitment for one another to the world.

The wedding itself was every brides dream come true. This kind of fanfare and the frenzy doesn't come around too often. I don't remember anticipating a wedding like this since Princess Diana wed Prince Charles...and I am a wedding planner!

From the time that Catherine arrived to Westminster Abbey in the Queen's 1950s Roll Royce...the world waited with bated breath on what she looked like and more importantly what her wedding dress looked like and let me tell you the wait was well worth it!

Kate's dress was designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen and it perfectly reflected the brides style. It was a modern interpretation of Princess Grace's wedding gown. This gown though is 100% Kate! Nothing over the top but absolutely stunning! The ivory and white Duchess satin A-line ball gown with full skirt and and 8' 10" train, highlighted Kate's look rather than distract from it. The hand-embroidery on the skirt was equally understated but made a beautiful impact. The lace bodice with a v-neck, long sleeves, and collar really made the dress. She topped off the look with a Chantilly Lace veil. Kate's 1936 Cartier halo tiara is borrowed from the Queen. This particular tiara was given to the Queen on her 18th birthday by her mother. The brides diamond pear-shaped drop earrings are a gift from Kate's parents and the only piece of jewelry that adorned her body, besides her engagement ring and later, the Welsh gold wedding band.

Kate carried a simple, yet beautiful bouquet that had Myrtle, a royal tradition, Ivy, Sweet William, Lily-of-the-valley, and Hyacinth.

Pippa, Kate's sister and maid of honor, wore a simple ivory column gown with a cowl neck, cap sleeves, and button detailing on the back, also designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.

The bridesmaids wore pleated tea length gowns with puffy capped sleeves. Perfectly appropriate for the royal wedding...very simple. The page boys reflected the look of Prince William/little drummer boys.

The Queen wore yellow! A bright and cheery outfit with matching hat designed by Angela Kelly. She looks great.

The brides mother, Carolyn, wore a simple white dress with a pale blue coat over it and matching pale blue hat by Catherine Walker, a favorite of the late Princess Di...very simple and almost ordinary...though it gave us great insight to the understated elegance we would see in the brides gown as well.

Westminster Abbey was decorated very simply with the additions of trees that brought the outside in...continuing the view that Catherine had on her ride to Westminster Abbey

Prince William was stunning in his red military outfit. What a perfect looking groom! Prince Harry is just as stunning and debonair as his groom brother.

William and Kate, the future King and Queen of England, will now be known to the world as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and will also be known as Prince and Princess William of Wales. Though I am sure the media will still call her Princess Catherine or Princess Kate...but officially she is HRH Princess William of Wales.

For the black tie evening festivities with a guest list of over 300 of their closest friends and family, the Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge donned more manageable attire, that was still stunning. The Duchess wore another Sarah Burton designed gown. This time a strapless A-line white satin gazar gown with circle skirt and diamante embroidered detailing around the waist. She topped it off with a white angora bolero...which again was simple yet elegant and stunning. The Duke stayed with the standard double breasted black tuxedo.

William and Catherine...may your marriage be everlasting and full of joy. Congratulations and many blessings!

Icon Bride: Elizabeth Taylor

In memoriam of Elizabeth Taylor's passing (February 27, 1932 - March 23, 2011) I thought I would re-start my Icon Bride postings with one on Dame Elizabeth Taylor.

Elizabeth Taylor the iconic movie star and philanthropist sure had a knack for making a memorable moment even more so! On her first marriage to Richard Burton held at the Ritz Carlton in Montreal, Canada on March 15, 1964. The wedding was attended only by nine people. The gorgeous movie star and now bride opted for a nontraditional wedding gown in daffodil yellow. The knee length empire-style chiffon gown, designed by academy award winning designer Irene Sharaff, was a defining moment for the 60s bride. Her hair adorned with lilies of the valley and white hyacinth made a bold impact. Known for her jewelry, the newly married Mrs. Burton, topped off her wedding look with a diamond and emerald brooch given to her by her husband.

In modernizing this iconic bride, this is how I see the Elizabeth Taylor bride of today.

I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Dara and Jorge, as well as Dara's mom Teresa, on their February 19, 2011 wedding at El Presidio Chapel and Hotel Mar Monte in Santa Barbara. Oscars 2011 Academy Awards: Red Carpet Winners and Not So Bad Losers

Jennifer Hudson was stunning in Versace

The Oscars, Hollywood's most GLAMOROUS EVENING, has once again come and gone. We congratulate all the winners of the coveted golden man statuette and we look forward to another year of magical movie making!

There were a lot of Highs on the red carpet and even the lows were not so bad. There really weren't many fashion tragedies. So I would have to say that they ladies really took their time to make sure they all looked fabulous on the red carpet this year, which was a little surprising.

What we noticed on the red carpet. Lots of red and oranges. Navy and tones of Purple were also big. Nudes, golds, silvers and sparkle were also a hit. Hair do's ranged from high glam to tossled mess. But all in all it worked. The men - you can't really go wrong with a classic tux - though Russel Brand needs some styling help.

So for this years Oscars Red Carpet I would give it an A-. Lots of great looks with just some misses.

Maybe in a different color I would have loved it more).

Busy Philipps in Douglas Hannant (it was just a tad to busy on Busy. If you lost the bow it might have made a bigger impact. The dress just made her look larger than she really is), Sharon Stone in Christian Dior (not so bad - it's the overall styling - she looked like a hybrid mix of Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous and Cruella de Ville - all she was missing was a vodka bottle and a cigarette holder), Helena Bonham Carter in Colleen Atwood (Oh Helena at least this was not such a wreck but again I think less is more), and Nicole Kidman in Christian Dior (usually one of my red carpet favs, but this frock made her look large through the hips and it was just and just way too much going on).

Cate Blanchett in Givenchy Couture (Cate another one of my red carpet favs - FAILED with this number. The chest part look like its framed by that circular number or it's a puppet show theater she is wearing. And the chartreuse beading - what is up with that?), Virginia Madsen in Romona Kevesa (So wrong in so many ways), Florence Welch in Valentino (I get it...but still it's just not flattering on you darlin'), and Jacie Weaver in Collette Dinnigan (just not flattering to your top half or the overall look - but congrats on the Nom).

I can see how some of these gowns can easily translate to the wedding aisle as well as for bridesmaids!

Rocks and Wrecks at the 2011 Grammys

Best Performance of the evening. Cee Lo Green and Gwyneth Paltrow

The Grammys are all about Rock 'N Roll Style...the time for celebrities to pump up their red carpet style with some edge! We saw some ROCK it out, while others were just a total WRECK! The overall show was a little drab, but for the most part I enjoyed the performances!

Cee Lo Green and Gwyneth Paltrow blew it out of the park with their collaboration on F$@* You - otherwise known as the song Forget You. Cee Lo, dressed like a cross between Elton John and the NBC Peacock, made the performance. He was backed by some Muppets - a memorable throw back to Elton John on The Muppet Show. Ms. Paltrow, in a plunging neckline cat suite, showcased her voice and made the song truly a Grammy favorite - I HATE YOU TOO!

Lady Gaga's performance was also memorable, though not the best that I have seen from her. The latex outfits a little odd, but what do you expect from Gaga. The number by Bruno Mars, B.O. B, and Jenelle Monae was also memorable and great to see these relatively new artists showcase their talents! Eminem was also wonderful...that's one angry white boy...but the emotions and performance electrifying!

Worst moments included Christina Aguilera doing her over the top vocal mishmash. Thank goodness Jennifer Hudson, Yolanda Adams, Martina McBride and Florence Welch were there to save the tribute to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. RiRi had a bad night vocally but her second performance with Drake was far better than her collaboration with Eminem. Bieber, Usher, Jaden Smith...odd performance, but I guess I just may be too old to get Bieber (even though he is talented, Smith not so, and Usher - stick to dancing though I live the song OMG).

Nicki Minaj in Givenchy - BAPs revisited WTF?, Rhianna in Jean Paul Gaultier - looks like you took the fur trim off Mrs. Claus' dress and sewed them together - not flattering, Haley Williams in Jeremy Scott - so wrong in so many ways - looks like you took it out of a dress up box of a 6 year old, Katy Perry in Armani - the disco ball bra is so 1990 and the skirt looks like curtains from a funeral home.

Ultimate Wreck Lady Gaga. I get it you are an original, but can you do something normal for once. I realize that you were born this way, but we didn't need to see you in your egg.

Now for the men...just a mashup of what they were wearing.

Ricky Martin - love the silver jeans and combat boots - now that's coming out, Lenny Kravitz - rocker chic and he can pull it off, Adam Lambert - safe and hip with a little bit of glam, Justin Bieber - age appropriate and stylish.

Wreckin' It

Usher - homeless chic never chic unless your homeless, DJ David Guetta - did you and Usher shop at the same thrift store?, Sean "Diddy" Combs - is 90s revival in style? Lose the outfit, the grills, and the sunglasses!, John Mayer or is it Johnny Depp - John or Johnny? Mayer you don't look cool.

I am so excited to have the save the date cards (STDs) for my client's Riviera Maya wedding in September complete and out the door! Jocelyn Chan-Style, the paper stylist, is INCREDIBLE. She really took the concept of this destination wedding and blew it out of the park. My clients are ecstatic beyond believe on the outcome.

Her passport inspired save the date cards came out incredible and the details are mind-blowing. Everything from the Manila paper envelopes to the coding on the bottom of the passports is pitch perfect. She incorporated the wedding colors perfectly too! Jocelyn hand assembled and finished all the detailing, such as the rhinestones, herself.

This is the first time I have worked with Jocelyn and I have to say it won't be the last. The amazing part of this is that, Jocelyn, is not doing this work professionally; she actually has a different career...that I think she needs to reconsider PRONTO. From the start, she had a vision of what the concept should look like and the end product not only captured all that but she also executed it flawlessly. She is really flexible to work with and easy going, so the experience of designing this custom invitation was a treat. In the end, she produced one of the loveliest STD cards I have seen in a long time. I think that any bride or couple looking for an inspired, custom, tailored, and hand made invitations should contact Jocelyn NOW before she becomes big time...that won't be too long judging from this gem!

She is currently working on the bride and grooms' boxed wedding invitations that will include original watercolor artwork. From the prototypes I have seen...they will be MIND BLOWING! I can't wait to see the final version.

After we received the news about The Knot, I had a little tasting session in the office to try these new cake balls from a company out of Dallas called Zen Baking Company. The little balls of heaven were pretty amazing but not at all what I was expecting. From the get go, I had in my mind that these little sweet balls were going to be mini circular, ball like, cakes that were iced and decorated...a cake ball. What we got was something more surprising and something that I love! You know you all love to lick the left over batter off the bowls when you are baking right? Well, these "cake" balls are more of the like the uncooked batter, just a little more dense (truffle like consistency)...not sure how they do it actually...but I think they should be renamed as Cake Batter Balls. But at any rate, these cake balls by Zen Baking Company would make nice favors or an addition to your dessert table at your event.

Our favorite cake ball flavors that we tried today were:
Ode to NOLA a pecan praline concoction
Mocha Toffee Crunch
Pastilla de Yummy (a sugar candy sorta bite - for Filipinos it tastes like the pastilla sugar candies)
Choco-choco-choco-late a chocoholics best friend!
Purplelicious is a made from purple yams or Ube and is a throwback to a traditional Filipino dessert, really delicious

The other item we tried and absolutely loved from Zen Baking Company was their Cookie Dough Whoa balls! I absolutely enjoyed these...the grainy raw cookie dough presented in an upscale way and covered in either white chocolate or dark chocolate...what else can you ask for! The Snickerdoodle was pretty awesome and was a hit amongst those tasting them. All in all these were probably our most favorite and people were fighting for the leftovers.

In addition to their core flavors, they also offer seasonal and specialty flavors! I am sure if there is something you are wanting they can probably come up with a cake ball to match it. A bit of warning - these cake balls are not for the faint of heart. These are pretty intense in taste and it definitely gives you a sugar rush. Think truffles only cakier.

They have many options for presentation packaging and they ship their products pretty meticulously. So ordering them for shipping is no problem at all. The samples arrived at my house as beautiful as they packaged them up. These will definitely be a hit and a conversation piece at your next event. Golden Globes 2011 - WOW Gowns Galore

I love watching the parade of gowns at the Golden Globes, because it gives a view of what we may expect at the Oscars. A lot of the gowns I saw Sunday evening could easily translate into wedding gowns as well as formal bridesmaid gowns. I was really surprised to see some trends continue, one shoulder gowns, while new ones begin, SLEEVES! I loved that many of the gorgeous ladies were wearing gowns with sleeves (full, long, cap). I predicted that the sleeves trend would happen back in 2009 in the wedding industry as well - so I was a couple years early, see my post here.

In addition to the sleeves, we saw lots of pinks in all kinds of hues. Emerald tones also seem to continue to be in fashion - though I think not everyone can carry this color. Other trends I saw last night halter gowns and not overdone hair. Lots of loose dos and ponytails...very charming I thought.

Princess Bride - Designers Design Gowns for Kate Middleton

When you are a princess...well...soon to be princess in this case, everyone wants to dress you for your fairytale wedding. Why wouldn't they since the world, will literally, have their eyes on her when she makes her way down the aisle.

Ever since the royal engagement of HRH Prince William to Kate Middleton was announced, the world has been speculating on what the wedding will look like and most importantly what the soon-to-be princess and future Queen of England would wear on her wedding day.

While we cannot speculate on what Kate (Catherine) will wear on her wedding day, we can only wonder if it's an established designer with a name people recognize or some unknown up and comer. Royal correspondent Yvonne Yorke recently told Vogue UK, "When the name is officially announced, it will come as a surprise to many, and catapult the designer to worldwide fame. For clues on the identity, I suggest looking at those who have made dresses for Catherine, her sister Pippa, and her mother Carole." The anticipation! How lovely would it be for her to walk down the aisle in a gown designed by her sister or mother?

AMA - Red Carpet looks more WTF than OMG.

I love award shows and seeing all the glamor and gowns and bling and fabulousness. But it seems last night's AMA (American Music Awards) were more about trying to out do Gaga's outfits (she wasn't even there) - which can't be done or trying too hard to make a statement - whatever statement they were trying to make. I thought most of the outfits were a big fail and quite disappointing. Here's a look at the parade of HORRIFIC outfits that came down the red carpet last night. Just seemed like an off year.

I get it, less is more, but it was a just a bit off Rhi Rhi. Maybe you should have taken a cue from Hallie Berry's 2002 Oscar Gown by Elie Saab - the same designer that did this number. Your asymmetrical green draped dress by Elie would have made a better impact on the red carpet.

Ke$ha, maybe you should replace the $ with a ¢ because this entire look likes like one HEFTY mess. It looks like a PR garbage bag challenge and you oddly are reminding me of the female version of Syndrome on The Incredibles. I hope this was not the junk junk you were talking about that boys wanted to touch.

Miley Miley Miley - maybe we should just change your name to Charmin because it looks like you forgot to check your behind before you left the restroom in this Marchesa gown. I think chopping off the train would have made this couture look much better.

Willow - you've got my hair whipping but fire your stylist now. This concoction that they assembled is a hot mess and has me shaking my head NO NO NO. Overworked couture on a preteen just looks odd and the fit not too flattering...if you were older people would be saying what's up with the CT.

Nicki Minaj there is so many things wrong with this. Let's just say, maybe you should get your money back from the metal yard - they'll buy back by the pound. Manish Arora the designer of this number just did too much - way too much. If he wanted his couture to be recognized in The States maybe he should of put her in one of his other and absolutely stunning colored frocks. Plus wasn't the skeleton thing already done by Lady Gaga last year on stage? A rehash of his (Manish Arora) carousel dress that Katy Perry wore to the European Music Awards would have been a welcomed site too.

Regardless of the train wrecks - and there were more of those than just the ones above, a few of the celebs were right on the mark. Here are three of my favorites from the evening.

So that is my recap for this years AMA Red Carpet looks. Quite disappointing year - lets hope the couture for the awards season are better than these frocks.

Destination Weddings - The New "IT" Thing

Destination weddings have been around forever, but more and more couples are finding that these weddings are more attainable and affordable than having one in their hometown. About Wish Upon a Wedding

Founded in January of 2010 by CA wedding planner, Liz Guthrie of San Jose Wedding Consultants, Wish Upon a Wedding was created to help couples who did not have the time, money, resources or strength to plan a wedding on their own, because of terminal illness or other serious life-altering circumstances. The organization now celebrates the courage, determination and spirit of these couples by granting their dream wedding wishes. After producing the San Francisco Dream Wedding Giveaway in 2009, a contest in which only one couple would be granted a dream wedding, Liz came up with a way to merge her two passions. While going through the process of giving the wedding "prize" to a woman suffering from stage IV Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Liz created Wish Upon a Wedding. Overnight, Liz decided to change wedding history, and the way we give, by launching a nonprofit organization that was totally unique and had never existed before.

Supported by industry leaders such as Sasha Souza, David Beahm, Stella Inserra, Jenny Orsini, Kevin Covey, Stacie Francombe, Sylvia Weinstock, Steve Kemble, Mindy Weiss, Mary Dann, and Ivy Robinson (to name just a few), the organization has experienced rapid growth and seen voracious acceptance throughout the country.

To date, eight couples have benefited from the generous work of Wish Upon a Wedding. Over 4,000 volunteers have signed up to become Wish Granters. Their facebook page has attracted over 10,000 fans. None of this would be possible without public support.

In Loving Memory of Wish Recipients who have Passed On

Dani and Tony married in St Louis on September 1. She passed away September 30th. Dani had suffered from Cystic Fibrosis since age 3, and had recently received a double lung transplant.

Florence and Micheal married near Sacramento on March 13. She passed away on September 28. Florence battled stage IV breast cancer, and was diagnosed with six months to live at the time of her wedding.

Shelly and Jay married in Seattle on May 2. Shelly passed away three weeks later. She had been battling a rare type of cancerous lymphoma, and Jay suffered from Multiple Sclerosis.

Destination Wedding Location Love: Xcaret (Riviera Maya, Mexico)

I recently went to the Riviera Maya to do a site visit at Xcaret (pronounced esh-caret) for a client who is interested in getting married there next September.

Upon arrival it just seemed like any other theme park - the entrance was nothing to write home about and I kinda got worried about the location and what potential it really had. Well let me tell you...once I walked through those gates - all my expectations from photos I have seen were met and than some! It was kinda mind blowing actually and a little overwhelming. Pictures does not do this venue justice - trust me on this, I've seen many pics of the venue and I was still in awe.

Graciela, one of the in-house wedding planners, walked us through the entire wedding guest experience. From entering through a special gate, to the walk up to St. Francis of Assisi Chapel (which by the way is officially sanctioned as a Catholic Church), to the journey guests will take en-route to reception site including a spiral descent (called the snail path) to a reception cave that has a river running through, it's called La Isla - which serves as one of the parks restaurants as well.

Additionally, we got to see other locations, like The Ponds, an area on the Caribbean Ocean that serves as a ceremony and reception location. We also got to see the Crypt of Souls a humongous dome like cave with an opening on top that houses a large crucifix and crypts (not real) filled with LED candles (pictured above). There's also a walk around the Crypt of Souls that is filled with Santos or figures of Saints. The floor is a huge spiral labyrinth and has water running in between the paved areas. The sound of the trickling water vibrates throughout this experience. It's an awesome location for photos or even an intimate small wedding for say 10 people.

Xcaret was designed as a "majestic park by the sea that features unique activities, where you can have fun while discovering the natural and cultural richness of Mexico. Among its great treasures, in Xcaret, you can find underground rivers, cenotes, a Butterfly Pavilion, recreated Mayan ruins, a beach, inlets and Xcaret’s one of a kind celebration “Xcaret Mexico Espectacular,” an absolutely wonderful show. At Xcaret you can also enjoy the most amazing water activities such as swimming with dolphins, scuba, Sea Trek and snorkeling."

For the destination wedding, Xcaret offers an experience your guests will remember forever! It's the location that destination dreams are made of. Guests will experience so much beauty, history, and see things such as the Bridge of Paradise, which is a representation of a traditional Mexican cemetery. This cemetery is made of 365 tombs that represents a day of the year and the 52 steps leading to it represents the 52 weeks in the year. I am telling you every corner has something amazing at Xcaret. Oh and I almost forgot THE VIEWS are amazing from St. Francis of Assisi Chapel as well as The Ponds. The location is very accommodating to all guests including individuals who may need special assistance.

The entertainers at the park can be hired to perform at your wedding or ceremony. All of them amazing musicians and artists. From conch blowing Mayan natives to an eight-piece Mariachi band - you can get the best of the best from Xcaret's extensive list of live musicians and performers. The parks in-house caterer can also customize your menus or you can select from menu's that already have conceived. They will also work with you to make sure that it fits within your budget! The staff is also wonderful to work with.

Location Love: El Paseo Restaurant, Santa Barbara, CA

I had the pleasure of working with the historic and world famous El Paseo Restaurant this past weekend for a client's wedding. This place is incredible and I forgot how magical this location can be for weddings and events.

El Paseo Restaurant is under new management/ownership (Paul Jakubowski and John Scott co-owners) and has an incredible new chef, Alex Castillo. The food is superb and the service that my clients received were top notch. Guests were raving how accommodating and genuinely nice Paul's staff were throughout the event. Paul, who is also the general manager, has transformed El Paseo Restaurant to its original glory (cuisine and service) and re-establishing it as the place to be in Santa Barbara.

El Paseo Restaurant is set in a Hacienda style courtyard that has a retractable roof, balcony's, and central fountain. The tables and booths are set around the courtyard. There is a large bar area that can accommodate the cocktail hour and the restaurant itself can easily seat 150 people. They have kept the styling true to it's original roots and it really makes this location a gem in Santa Barbara.
