Rankin once again hits the big time, with this Jeremy Scott for Swatch video. Throwing some electrical staccato shapes, with a few pastel geometrics in between, and some groovy vortex eyes. This is the next step in conceptual fashion photography. Will the shoot pages of future 'zines be a flip book - hint hint pretty please this would be awesome - and does Hunger magazine represent a new conceptual creative hub... perhaps the cross pollination of magazine, photographic studio and conceptual consultancy?

Dear Rankin,

Thank you for an awesome shindig last night. Most of all thank you for this magazine; for creating it and bringing it into our lives. It is EPIC. What can I say? The photography, the styling, the personality, it's all immense - the font, the gold, the portrayal of celebrity in a very real and raw way. It is beautifully visceral and equally aspirational. Not only are Rankin and the creatives which he works with absolute talents, but also legends of our time.

When I begin to digest this more, I am sure there will be a lot more to say, it's such a feast of wilder beast for the eyes. Hopefully when the film roll I shot last night is developed, there will be at least one good shot to tell the tale of the Hunger launch party; which will probably be the one Rankin took using my camera. For this, I am most of all thankful, and a little bit giddy.

For now though. Wow.

The American Dream

It does not get more bleary eyed than this for me. I was compelled, not by a musical killer whale jumping and splashing in the water in time to contemporary pop and retro rock, but by these magnificent digital print skin suits. The ultimate second skin contouring across the body; I was fascinated and pointed the camera at whoever I could find wearing these epic feats of visual skins with a new environment specific consideration. Up until now, wetsuit prints have been limiting and lacking in full printed design potential.

At first, I thought they were full on Neoprene wetsuits, and fully considered the methodology of how this is possible (since I spent so much time pondering this and trying to find answer on my degree, why not continue contemplating this in the Floridian sunshine with a whale intermittently flying into the air in my peripheral vision?) Well it was not long before questions were posed and indeed answered. As I wandered off to photograph the alluring reflections of the water in the glass at the Tank's edge, a woman appeared before my very eyes with a techno skin in hues of digital blue. Click. Friendly as ever, she told me it is a skin - simply a thin layer fabric skin - with a wetsuit underneath. How exciting! One door closes on this question which has intrigued me endlessly, while many more questions arise about the possibilities to come; the pursuit and a whole new market, the promise of a new world where exciting wetsuits will grace the bodies of all mankind.

Well, one day.

Sea world, I love you, I do.

(Shamu does rock too but I am not sure where I stand with a captive whale made to perform daily, not living life to it's full potential out in the great Oceans of Planet Earth. So no comment on that side of it.)

This exhibition is absolutely mind blowing

Plus how can anyone resist the overpowering sense of love for an exhibition which includes such articles as costumes from Blade Runner, an Andy Warhol canvas which subverts everything to which it first symbolised, walls plastered in Las Vegas in the sixties, crazy Memphis prints, Neon lights, Post-Apocolyptia, and concludes with a New Order video?! It makes me want to do some clashing colour blocking, throw some multi-directional shapes onto fabric, and wholeheartedly embrace the postmodernist ways which manifest themselves within very single one of us.

Thank you V&A for once again delivering the goods to this here material world.

Tribe Heterogeneous

Autumnal layering in soft neutral shades, co-ordinating animal print in two scales, a touch of fur, a long length sleeveless camel coat, and some lace-up functional flats; now that is a recipe for success if ever it was standing right next to me at a subway station in the heart of NYC!

She is one of those heterogeneous individuals which dresses by the fashion code of cut and texture, rather than by the code of global uniformity (aka the logo brand) and she even takes her socks seriously; that bare bit between the bottom of the leggings and the shoes does matter.

Very inspiring.

Not only because it will be starring one of fashion's finest fresh-faced beauty's, Gemma Ward, (among other incredible actors including Leo di Caprio and directed by the amazing, the genious, that is my absolute favourite director of all times, Baz Lurhmann) but also because it is so relevent to right here and now, and the future and the past, all at the same time. The roots of my favourite trend Sport Lux (second only to Tribal/Nomadic) can be traced back to F.Scott Fitzgerald's, The Great Gatsby, noteably referencing the rise of a leisure class where Sportswear became a symbol of wealth and ranking in high society; they had time to spare, crochet to pursuit, and money existed for these people back in 1930s America - that denim blue collar was just a means for survival and hard work never really paid off for the labourours of low society - but sportswear meant quite the contrary.

In contemporary society, can we interpret the sport lux trend differently? Casual sportswear readily available in mass culture via the high street and global brands, means anyone can look like they have time to spare. Sport Lux (the high end version of casual gear) therefore becomes somewhat the flip of nearly a century ago; if you wear it now, chances are you are a professional fashion grafter with the look but not the luxury of a lifestyle with time to spare. Juxtapositional sportswear, and a 1930's classic... I can't wait to read more into this.

(of course these are initial thoughts and personal views, seeds of a process of cultural fashion anthropology planted in my head and left to grow in thought with time and the food of societies interesting ways)

Guaranteed - after the release of this film, 2012 will see a full on revival of polo necks, v-neck sweaters draped over the shoulders, little tennis skirts for chicks and and golfing trousers for the blokes. That will be the East London crew who will probably throw it all together with an enigmatic Mad Max raw punky edge. Nike will go slick with foot hugging sneaks too, and the high top will be only be available in Nike Town. Now i am double/triple mega excited.

Antiform Remade in Leeds comes to London

And, we are back on the street.

Green Lens Studio hosted another fabulous ethical fashion feat on a sunshiney summers day in North London at the beginning of August. Liz of Antiform (www.antiformonline.com) journeyed down south to London from up north in Leeds, to photograph the Autumn/Winter 2011 collection in an ethical editorial shoot styled by the one and only Ethical Queen Lucy Harvey. Antiform garments were teamed with other affordable ethical branded items including Komodo, and From Somewhere. This was a true ethical creative collaboration which included photographer Sally Cole, and model Kimika; everyone involved is truly passionate about creating a new image around ethical fashion, again removing the idea of ethical fashion from traditional connotations of hemp and beige.

What it is that is so unique and exciting about Antiform, is that creative director Liz, gets into her grubby clothes, and hits the fabric warehouses and old factories where she salvadges reems of fabric cast off by the fashion industry. Then she makes them into awesome clothes which we all desperately want to wear; and we can wear them guiltlessly because they are sourced entirely ethically. Furthermore, Liz enlists local old ladies to crochet, and even gives them freedom to come forward with ideas for how the crochet might be incorporated into the garment, thus keeping traditional textile craft alive in the locality. This chica truly thinks outside the industry box, yet creates absolute corkers.

Thank you Liz for taking the time to scout and source cast-off fabrics, keeping craft alive in the form of totally fierce garments, and of course, thank you so much for the amazing printed leggings in all the jazzy colour and pattern ways.X

It would seem collaboration in the air right now... Check out this soon to be released collaboration between ethical label From Somewhere, and the sporty speedo. The collaborative process is so exciting, especially when it involves a sports / swimwear brand and green ethos. These dresses are made from the Speedo full body LZR racer suit; the company was left with heaps of these when Swimming's governing body banned full body suits in performance swimming back in January 2010.

A big thank you to From Somewhere for recycling those sporty bits that never even had the chance to hit the shelves.

As you may remember, I have a lot of thanks to owe Matuse for their support by sending Geoprene samples halfway accross the globe for me to use in my graduate textile collection. Now, I want to thank Matuse for introducing me to swim and surfwear brand, Alexandra Cassaniti, via thier latest collaboration named Geometry. Matuse, who have pioneered wetsuit design - through their unique use of eco-friendly, limestone based Geoprene - have joined forces with Alexandra Cassaniti (new to me but already I am falling in love...) to create a range of women's surfwear. This collaboration of strong design, ethical ethos, and the ultimate consideration of both art and function, really hits the spot in the contemporary sportswear world.

So, once again, big shout out Matuse... Please may you collaborate forever and make lots of wonderful Earth loving Geoprene leggings?

From urban ethics and the art of the street, it is now time to travel to the epic ocean (in cyber world of course). I cannot get enough of the latest cover of Carve Magazine, in all of it's neon haze and polka dot glory; it seriously highlights the fresh acidic colours erupting in visual culture right now, particularly in the street, up the mountain, and in the surf. Board graphics, swimwear prints, and now zine graphics are ripping up the scene with their punchy colours, and I love it. Maururu Carve Mag, I look forward to seeing the photos from Teahupoo, and eagerly await forthcoming covers.

Ok, so I have a few major passions in life; of course the new-found love of Ethical fashion (sprouting from a natural affiliation with fashion, style, and fabric), but as you may also have noticed, I am very into Art; Modern Art, Postmodern Art, Alter-modern art, and the one that hits the spot the most - Stree Art. I love it. Cannot get enough of those soft sprayed edges and sharp geometric words. Maybe it is because it is so accessible, all over the world, with location specific motives and messages. All I know is that when I see it, whatever form it may appear in, I cannot help but remove the lens cap, point, and click.

In my recent urban explorations, I have noticed a trend emerging which seems to indicate a new era of art on the street in London. It is what I shall call Urban Quirk. The word 'quirky' is not often a word we would associate with the hard edged, bad boy image of street art, but it appears that these days there is a new air of humourous expression - fairly important I think we would all agree in the current political and financial climate accross the globe. It would seem that Give Peas a Chance is a play on 'Give Peace a Chance', so could merely be viewed as hippy activism, but I prefer to take it more literally - particularly when viewed with the Tripe which feels as though it is like the worst word a really polite kid can come up with. Then there is the 3D Brick Sticker, popping up in the East End; really solidifying, and bringing a new dimension (wink) to
this emerging feel within street art in 2011.

Perhaps Shakespearean and Chaucer quotes will be next, with some urban holographics?

(A day in the life of an Ethical Stylist doing Ethical Styling)

On Tuesday Green Lens Studio (London's first sustainable photography studio) hosted the first in a series of ethical styling events, where ethically minded and passionate creatives came together to commence a project which will exhibit the accessibility of ethical fashion to the mass market. The brain child of ethical stylist Lucy Harvey (http://www.ethicalstylist.com/), and Alice from online magazine Future Frock (http://www.futurefrock.com/), this style project is set to erase the hemp and tree hugging connotations traditionally attached to ethical fashion, and will conclude in an exhibition showing just how fashion forward ethical fashion is. We will see portraiture photographs in the style of humble oil paintings of a plethora of talented and uniquely beautiful women spanning from the ages of 21 into their 50s. Every lovely lady was dressed to suit their individual style by Lucy Harvey, where the air oozed with elegence, beauty, and creativity. Every item of clothing, every accessory, and even the photography studio was entirely ethical.

This is Caravaggio meets the Future of Fashion, and I cannot wait to see the outcome of this epic ethical feat.

Today, I met the one and only Maria Papadimitriou of Plastic Seconds. Wearing pleated palazzo pants and radiating an overwhelming positive and creative energy, I immediately decided I liked her just as much as want to wear her jewellery. In the world of Plastic Seconds, it feels as though western society is slowly returning to a Tribal existence, scavenging from mass culture to make beautiful things; now we are wearing biro lids, and snack size soy sauce bottles. And I love it.

This is a true ethical fashion brand which addresses the issue new deisgners face, where we must reclaim and see the potential in a material, rather than destroy, cast off, bury and dismiss as we seem to have become accustomed to do with such ease since the rise and rise of mass culture, and the ultimate introduction of throwaway culture. Maria at Plastic Seconds, has a pure talent for taking society's cast off bits and bobs, and making them fit for a Western Warrior King. Thanks to the nature of how Maria works, every piece will be entirely unique, and there is no danger that it has a clone floating around on thousands of other peoples necks, ears, wrists, and fingers. This notion of mass cloned jewellery is so apparent in popular high street chains, that the pieces lose emotional value and become purely a symbol of capitalism. Whereas, I eagerly await to see the next mundane item which Maria has hoarded, and transformed into a wearable and guilt free commodity which holds value more than the worth of money. Ranting over. Basically, this stuff is awesome.

Four fierce kids. Lots of crazy geos playing off against soft ethereal blurs. And logo-loving. Welcome to the fashion shoot for Colder Shoulder, a fairly new Unisex tee brand which is totally Ethical, and that's the main reason why we heart it. This is the story of the new cool, where eclection comes together in sweet urban punk harmony.

We headed down East to a building site where these grimey ravers showed us their true colours and gave us all the colder shoulder. Under the direction of the Brand's Brains Cath, Lucy Harvey once again worked her styling magic creating these alter-egotistical characters. As the shoot evolved from lookbook to editorial and film, Harvey created entirely ethical ensembles with a razor sharp edge, setting the kebab-loving kids free to roam the urban wilderness. In collaboration with a photographer, and film-makers, this was an epic feat of creation and I cannot wait to see the campaign erupt. And remember, this is ENTIRELY ETHICAL> and looks ENTIRELY FIERCE!

Upon first sight, I thought this is RAD. Upon further inspection I made the informed decision this is DEFINITELY RAD...

The Artist: Barry McGee

The Gallery: Modern Art, Eastcastle Street, London

What it all means: Not only is this a playground of neon blocky graphicness, but it is entirely relevent to the explosion of anarchy in the streets of England; wherein McGee's work is influenced by tagging, vandalism, and 'Mission School' abstraction. It's totally awesome, and a fresh take on the graphic street art style (although somewhat ironic being showcased within a Gallery... think of that what you will - it is inspiring nonetheless).

It is innevitable, of course what I will talk about is the state of sheer carnage accross London, which is now spreading throughout the United Kingdom; the first words out of people's mouths as they commence their lunchtime liasons with friends being riot related. This state which has been slowly simmering away throughout the recession, the constant issue of our youth's future, has now erupted into a mild resembelence of gang warfare. Visually, it is like Kidulthood meets 28 Days. Realistically though, this is a large pocket of society which obviously feels very passionately for their cause and are going about proving it via the only medium they seem to know; blatent criminality and violence. This anarchy is awful, and I feel for the innocent people who have had to watch their livelihoods going up in flames, shattered to pieces, and the intimidating criminality which has amounted even to breaking into people's houses, unable to feel safe in their one place of security, with all this debauchery in the streets of their city.

We are amidst a revolution, hopefully with some positive change on the cards. However, with the dire state of the world as it is, do we really think a lot will be achieved through riotous and costly behaviour?

Welcome to England.

Now, I rant. I don't rant often. But now I rant.
So, I am walking down Great Eastern Road, London, and I see this. Quite obviously and blatently, a direct visual reference to the Coming Soon film 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes'. In fact it made me think, 'how bizarre, graffiti artists that are thinking about Apes, just like Planet of the Apes... Crazy'.

Ok, so advertising has stepped up to the next level. Using street art as a medium to tap into culture. Clever. The rebellious nature of street art is taking off along with that rocket to the future where man kneels before a Statue of Liberty half buried in sand... Good or Bad? I am cynical about it. Are you?
