Neil Young proved that he’s still got it last night in Denmark, as he headlined the main stage at Roskilde Festival. Tens of thousands of festival punters gathered to hear the aging rock legend perform a set that included classic tracks such as ‘The Needle and the Damage Done’ and ‘Cinnamon Girl’. There was also a surprise rendition of Bob Dylan’s ‘All Along The Watchtower’. Young closed the set with a cover of The Beatles ‘A Day In The Life’, paying homage to other musicians of his generation. [...more...]

Ringo’s birthplace faces demolition

The childhood home of Beatle Ringo Starr is set to be demolished after English Heritage rejected calls to preserve it. The famous drummer was born in the modest terrace home at No 9 Madryn St, Liverpool, and lived there for the first four years of his life before he and his mother moved. Many locals have urged English Heritage to step in and stop plans for the house to be demolished. The former childhood homes of fellow Beatles Sir Paul McCartney and John Lennon are now owned by the National Trust and visited by thousands of fans every year. [...more...]

Cheeky Girls "flattered" by McCartney

The Cheeky Girls have admitted that they are "flattered" that Sir Paul McCartney knows who they are. It was reported earlier this month that the former Beatle was friends with the pop duo and shared the same gym as them. Monica and Gabriela Irimia confirmed the rumours, claiming that they were shocked when the veteran musician recognised them. "We were so flattered that he actually knew and he said 'hi'," Gabriela told DS. "We had a small chat every time about life, our health, the gym and things like that." BEATLES DAY COMES TO THE HARD DAYS NIGHT HOTEL

Hard Days Night Hotel will host an exclusive day packed with “fab four” musical entertainment for hotel guests and visitors to commemorate Liverpool ’s first ever Beatles Day. This will take place on Thursday July 10th from midday. The Hard Days Night Hotel’s Zygmant Suite will be specially transformed to showcase a diverse range of musicians from the ‘Mersey Beatles’ to Chris Finlay of ‘Gerry and the Pacemakers’ all of whom will perform at the event. Entry to Beatles Day is free up until 4pm and £10 per ticket after this time. Julia Baird, half sister of John Lennon will be attending the Beatles Day at the hotel.

Limited tickets are on sale to the public and are available on the door on the day. For those wishing to stay at the hotel they can take advantage of a special preferential rate of £150 bed and breakfast that includes two tickets to the event. Beatles Day is the first of what is hoping to be an annual event and takes place on 10 July; the anniversary of the day that the Beatles returned to Liverpool after conquering America .

After 43 Years, Israel Welcomes Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney is no longer a threat to Israeli youth. More than four decades after the Beatle and his famous band mates were told they couldn’t perform in Israel for fear that they would corrupt the country’s young people, the “Let It Be” singer has signed on for a September concert in either Tel Aviv or Ramat Gan. The big-budget show, first reported by Yediot Aharonot, will follow McCartney concerts in Georgia and Turkey. The show, likely to be the largest and most expensive of the summer, is being organized by David Zarzevski, a promoter behind the Eilat Jazz Festival and recent Tel Aviv-area concerts by Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu. This song was said to be written after a conversation Billy Joel had with Sean Lennon (John Lennon's son), who complained he was growing up in troubled times. Well, that much can be said by anybody. Everyone can say that they grew/are growing up in troubled times. But if everyone were, as Billy Joel did, to list out all the good AND bad, then I think that they would balance out nicely. We need to look at the big picture. History is happening all around us. Every day something is happening that will be remembered by someone. 'All You Need Is Love' finally arrives in U.S.

British documentary maker Tony Palmer called his 17-hour TV series exploring the origins of American popular music “All You Need Is Love,” because John Lennon told him it would make a great title. But in the three decades since he made it, it's become evident to Palmer that he could justifiably have named it "Nick of Time." The series will be shown in its entirety for the first time in the U.S. this weekend, marathon style, at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood as part of the Mods & Rockers Film Festival. It's broken down into chapters on various facets of popular music, such as jazz, blues, swing, Tin Pan Alley, country, the Beatles and music that was fresh when Palmer was filming it in 1975 and 1976, glitter and progressive rock. SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY will appear in a British TV campaign for Paralympic athletes, urging the public to donate to the cause. The former Beatle has joined forces with fundraising appeal Paralympics GB, which aims to send disabled athletes to the Paralympic Games in Beijing this year (08). And he will make a direct plea in a televised clip set to air on 7 July (08), asking for British viewers' support in reaching the charity's goal of $4 million (GBP2 million). MCCartney says, "I met Paralympic dressage rider Sophie Christiansen and was blown away by her skill, dedication and the fact she had won a gold medal for Britain, so I felt I had to do something. "My suggestion was simple. Why not create an ad to highlight the work of ParalympicsGB and ask the public to give much-needed money." MCCartney's advert will premiere next week (07Jul08). The former Beatle's £84,000 Lexus hybrid vehicle was jetted 7,000 miles to the UK. The LS600H was a gift from Lexus to the 65-year-old, who helped promote the hybrid vehicle. But instead of arriving by boat as expected, the car was flown to Britain on a Korean Air flight, creating a carbon footprint almost 100 times bigger than if it had come by sea. Sir Paul was photographed in the maroon saloon for the first time as he was driven to his London recording studio yesterday. Tribute bands to play from Liverpool rooftops on Beatles Day

TRIBUTE bands will pay homage to the Fab Four from Liverpool’s rooftops during this month’s Beatles Day. They will recreate the famous January 1969 Savile Row rooftop appearance by singing some of the band’s most famous songs on top of city buildings, including the ECHO Arena. All-girl Beatle band The Beatelles will perform on the roof of BBC Radio Merseyside. SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY will help Quebec City celebrate its 400th birthday this summer (08) with a "big, big" concert. The former Beatle will take to the stage on the Plains of Abraham on 20 July (08), the first time he has performed in the city. He reveals to Musimax TV presenter Mike Gauthier, "I am doing a gig, a big gig, in Quebec City on July 20 to help Quebec celebrate their 400th anniversary. That (400 years) is a long time. "We're coming to Quebec for the first time. We're going to have a great time and I would love to see you there." SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY almost scrapped THE BEATLE's hit HEY JUDE - because he and GEORGE HARRISON couldn't agree on the track's arrangement. The legendary musician remembers how recording for the beloved anthem was thrown into chaos when he clashed with late bandmate Harrison over whose version of the song was better. He says, "What started happening, I think, was that I'd started getting on George's nerves. One prime example was when we were doing Hey Jude. "George started answering my vocals on his guitar. He was filling in all the gaps. Now, what do you say? 'Er, look, man, do you mind?' You've got to put it diplomatically. But you've got to say, 'I don't want that in the arrangement'. I sat with him for a few hours when he was in treatment about 10 days from his death," McCartney says of Harrison, who died in 2001, at the age of 58. "We joked about things – just amusing, nutty stuff. It was good. It was like we were dreaming." It was late in the day at Abbey Road Studios on February 11, 1963. The Beatles were wrapping up the recording of their LP "Please Please Me" for release a few weeks later. The final song was to be a cover of the Isley Brothers' "Twist and Shout," a high-energy number.
"(Abbey Road producer) George Martin always liked to end each side of an album with a rousing rocker," said Jeremy Yudkin, a lecturer at yesterday's Beatles Day in Lenox. "But Martin was a little concerned, because the band had been recording all day and John Lennon's voice was tired." But the Beatles, with Lennon belting out the lyrics in a near-howl, "stunned the technicians that day," said Yudkin. "They went all out, and nailed the song on the first take. A MOVE to have Ringo Starr’s birthplace given listed status has failed. English Heritage said “the criteria for listing” had not been met by 9 Madryn Street in Toxteth. An application to list the redbrick terraced house was made by a member of the public last year after concerns over the home being demolished as part of the New Heartlands scheme. Madryn Street was built in the mid-19th century and stands in the “Welsh Streets” area. [...more...]

Brian Wilson has also been linked with the new Warchild covers project, which will be the follow up to the 1995 'Help Album'. According to the Sun, the artists will cover a number of contemporary songs, including one by Beck. "They're really, really good songs. I was amazed," says Campbell. "There was a song in there that John Lennon and Yoko Ono had recorded but they never released it. It's called 'Grow Old With Me,' it's just a fabulous song. I get chills just thinking about it." The song was written in 1980 after a Robert Browning poem, Rabbi Ben Ezra, but didn't make the cut for Lennon's last Double Fantasy album. Amazingly, Campbell's own recording career precedes the Beatles' by a year when he released a hard pickin' album as part of the Green River Boys bluegrass outfit. That year he moved to Los Angeles, a long way from Delight, Ark. (pop: 311), where he grew up playing in country bands and figuring out Django Reinhardt licks. There he got to work in the busy studio scene and before long Campbell was a member of the Wrecking Crew, the elite cadre of first-call players on all the Phil Spector "Wall of Sound" records, plus everybody from Sinatra ("Strangers in the Night") to the Monkees ("I'm a Believer") and the Beach Boys ("Good Vibrations").
