Welcome to my update on training. I have been super busy and gave up a lot of facebook time for Lent. This has been a blessing and has allowed me to focus on training, reading, cleaning, and everything else that I do on a daily basis. I am now entering Week 12 as of today and refer to this portion of training as being in the trenches or the uphill battle (take your pick). These weeks tend to make someone do a little bit of questioning as to why they are running 26.2. Well, let me rephrase. This last week or so has made ME question why I am running as it now has become a chore to don on the shoes 4 days a week and go running. But once I get out there and hit the pavement, I instantly remember why I do this to myself. I LOVE TO RUN!!

There was a moment last week that I felt like running away after a difficult day with the kids. I thought 'Just. Keep. Going. Don't stop'!! Life with 4 kiddos can do that to you but somehow everyday, I live to fight another day and press on. Seriously, how do others with kids do it and NOT work out?! I think I would have had a lovely cream colored straight jacket picked out by now if it wasn't for running. I continually owe all this to God and his sense of humor. His belief that I could run and train for a marathon starting just 4 weeks postpartum while nursing. Yep, not medically indicated but sometimes you have to go with what the higher power is telling you to do.

Here is the update since my last blog.

Week 9
Activity Log (2/13-2/19)

Monday--Rest

Tuesday--4 Miles outside. (9:43 pace, interval workout
with strides/jogging)

Wednesday--HIIT Class (0.5 miles during warmup) + 3.5
Mile Run (10:35 pace)

Thursday--7 Miles (Outside, 9:56 pace).

Friday--REST
Saturday--13.1 Miles. Pace 11:04. WINDY!!

Sunday-- 60 minutes of walking, running, light circuits (tricep dips, pushups, plank holds, box jumps). Outside with the family = beautiful!!

Week
9 Mileage Completed...28.1 miles

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Week 10 Activity Log (2/20-2/26)
Monday--Rest
Tuesday--4 Miles Outside. (9:18 Pace fartlek at night). Good weather. By the way, fartlek is swiss for Speed Play. For me that means picking light poles and doing various sprints, strides, jogs, etc during the run).
Wednesday--4 Miles outside. (10:03 pace, windy).
I also played volleyball for a couple of hours that night. Probably burned 500+ calories but didn't wear my watch so I did not record it. I did record quite a bit of soreness the days after. The mind still thinks that I am 16 while the body says, "I don't think so!"
Thursday--8 Miles. (10:42 pace, great weather). Wore shorts for the first time this year!!
Friday--REST
Saturday--17 Miles outside. (10:57 pace + 2476 calories burned). Tough run probably due to over exertion from volleyball and ALL THESE CRAZY MILES. I also found time to do some Pole Fitness that night (first time experimenting with this activity) and went out after to dance my butt off in a club for the first time in years. I probably burned over 3500 calories on this day. Somehow I had energy to stay awake from 4 AM Saturday morning till 2 AM Sunday morning. Thank God for making good food choices.
Sunday--REST, REST, AND MORE REST.
Monday--REST. Well, I did do 30 minutes of yoga and 75 burpees for time. I was bored.
Thursday--8 Miles outside. (10:09 pace, 1157 calories burned, great weather). Felt great during this run.
Saturday--18 Miles outside. (10:30 pace, 2636 calories burned). Great run and lots of energy before, during, and after. Must repeat this week over and over again. Also found a liking for Stinger Waffles. Bicyclists really need to share their secrets with running. Yummy!!
Sunday--REST. This is suppose to be my cross training day but I often switch my Sunday's and Monday's around due to scholarly obligations. Had fun watching the rain and snow though. lol.
This next week will be exciting as I will be running my first half-marathon...the Cambridge Marathon. I will be working through this week and using the Half as a test of my potential times for the Marathon. I am hoping to run a sub-2:15 time for this event but honestly will be happy just to finish. Either way it will be a PR so that will be awesome!!
Weight Loss Notes: Since giving birth to my 4th child nearly 4 months ago I have lost 34 lbs!! I am about 4 lbs away from pre-preggo weight and closing in fast.
Nursing Notes: Since the last blog or two, I have run out of my fenugreek that I was taking as a preventative measure. As a result, my supply continues to go strong without it and I am doing wonderfully with nursing, pumping, and all that jazz. I have been exclusively breastfeeding (feeding and pumping for when I am running) for nearly 4 months. It can be a pain to have this extra stress with training but I am in a pretty good rhythm right now and it doesn't bother me as much as it did when I trained and nursed last time.
I often wonder what it must be like to train without having to nurse or pump prior to running or have to think about how many bottles are available for my little guy while I am out for a run. One day I will get to experience training without nursing.
For those of you wondering how I can do this with no issues with supply...I attribute this to GOOD DIET. I have focused this year to eating better and avoiding processed foods. I also eat MORE PROTEIN. Seeing that I have more muscle mass I decided to increase my protein. This also is due to nursing. Current day research shows that breastfeeding women need higher protein levels to maintain supply and proper nutrition. My daily goal is to get at least 20 grams of protein with each meal if not higher. For example, my breakfast usually consists of a breakfast wrap with egg whites, salsa, and small amount of shredded cheese. I also include a fruit. This usually is around 25+ grams of protein and one of the reasons that I sustain my energy level throughout the days.
Welcome to my blog and long overdue update on my training for the 2012 London Marathon. I am currently in Week 9 with 9 weeks remaining till race day. YIKES!!  3 Weeks ago I got to visit London and went on a city sightseeing tour to see London in all of its glory. I had been there 2 other times before but didn't see the entire city and all the key landmarks in those visits. During my tour, it was amazing to see the amount of runners who I assume were 'in training'. It was quite cold that day, but that didn't stop my mom and I from sitting in the top of a open double decker bus and snapping pictures of all the great landmarks. One landmark that I absolutely love is Big Ben. Named for the bell inside rather than the actual clock, Big Ben represents endurance and strength. During WWII, Big Ben stood tall and didn't falter. I think this is even more rewarding to hear this story as I work towards completing my second Marathon. I imagine that I will be near tears the next time I see Big Ben as it is near the end of the marathon where emotions run high.
Notes on training:  Feeling great up to this point. Still not getting lots of sleep with a 3 month old but I can't complain. Breastfeeding is going good and no issues with nursing supply with the increased mileage as of today. I am keeping a close eye on this since I have dropped 4 pounds in the last 16 or so days. I am trying to stick to 1 pound per week but according to sources I can safely lose up to 6 pounds per month. Week 9 is a cut-back week so that should help with things. It is a fine line with training and nursing and I have been working hard at eating well (and tracking calorie intake along with carb/protein levels). I use Lose It for all my tracking and currently maintain a 60-65% carb intake, 15-20% protein intake, and 15-20% fat intake). That is consistent with a typical runner's diet and my body responds pretty well when carbohydrate levels are above 60%.
Since last update I switched training programs and went to the Novice 2 plan for Hal Hidgon's marathon training. Here is what that looks like:
Week 1 & 2 of Marathon training was a success!! Here is a recap of my activity. Sorry I have been away so long! Hard to juggle everything and find time to blog!!
Week 1 Activity Log
Monday--Rest
Tuesday--3.5 (Treadmill)
Wednesday--5 miles (+ 2 mile walk--not counted with mileage)
Thursday--Rest
Friday--Rest
Saturday--7.1 mile Group Run.
Sunday--3.5 mile run while the kids rode bikes.
Week 1 Total Mileage Ran = 19.1 Miles
Week 1 Training Plan Goal = 15 Miles (+ 4.1 Miles).
Week 1 Notes--Felt great. I was a little disappointed that I had to take extra rest days and not get in more crosstraining but that is life with 4 kids and a husband that works (did I mention that I have a 7 week old and teach online classes from home part time?). lol. I am just grateful that my husband is here and such a great support. I don't know how I would overcome that obstacle of being a single mom and still make it to race day with my sanity in tact. Somehow there are women that do this and still race the 26.2. God bless them and their resilience.
Breastfeeding/Body Analysis: No issues with nursing except not being able to stockpile my milk like last pregnancies. This makes me worry a little so I started on Fenugreek (at a low dose) and also started eating more oatmeal to boost supply. In addition, I am also keeping track of fluid intake to make sure I am properly if not overly hydrated. Hoping to nurse as long as possible and no other significant issues or pain (except that from looking in the mirror and seeing the extra weight leftover from the pregnancy). When I look in the mirror I need a tattoo on my forehead that reads "Rome wasn't built in a day..." to remind me to keep focused. Just like the Brits say...KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON. (not yelling at you but for emphasis). Sounds like a great 2012 Resolution if you ask me.
Week 2 Activity Log
Monday--5 miles (Outside)
Tuesday--Rest
Wednesday--3.5 miles (Outside)
Thursday--3.5 miles (Outside)
Friday--Rest (no activity)
Saturday--8 mile group run.
Sunday--6.2 miles (outdoors with company).
Week 2 Total Mileage Ran = 26.2 Miles
Week 2 Training Plan Goal = 16 Miles (+ 10.2 Miles).
Week 2 Notes:  I was feeling pretty good after the first week and decided to add more miles. Hopefully I don't pay for that later in training. My legs felt good even though I ran all my miles outside. In the past I have typically hit the treadmill during the week to help my joints and save on some of the pounding. The weather was cooler in Week 2 and I did notice some slight knee twitching on Wednesday's run which went away on Thursday. Felt like absolute crap on Saturday's run (probably a sign that I shouldn't have run so much this week) but went back out on New Years Day and felt wonderful. Who says that runners have to always be smart in training? I love to run and I have no regrets so insert any addict comments here! BTW, how many miles are you running? If you aren't then don't judge because I wear earplugs to all those that like to arm-chair quarterback.
Pace Notes: Not really sure about the pace. Let me rephrase...I don't really care about my pace. It is not my goal or focus to track my pace but it is steadily improving. I 'think' my first runs were 11 min/mile + but at last check they are consistently getting faster as my legs adapt and adjust to running AND as the weight slowly starts to come off. I think my runs are around 1030-1100 min/mile without too much strain or effort. I am trying to figure out my anticipated half marathon and marathon times and would be happy with a 11 min/mile pace for the half and sub 1130 min/mile pace for the full. My goal for the marathon is sub-5 hours. We will see. I have the Garmin Forerunner 305 which I have had for over 2 years and it is an excellent tracking tool and my best friend. It has way more gadgets and gizmos than I use it for but it gets the job done, is easy to use, and is Ol' Faithful.
Here is a motivating picture from 1 year ago. 8 months of training after having my 3rd child. Pictured here is my running partner and friend (who also had a baby and trained in 7 months). Together we ran our first marathon together and it will always be the most awesome experience to date!! You can train alone but it is so much better and way more fun to recruit some friends. Misery loves company, right? lol. Training partners really get in sync and we both spent time pregnant this year. She is due very soon and will be right behind me with her training. Look forward to running another marathon with her someday since continents can't separate true friends!!
Week 3 Activity Log...so far
Tuesday--3 miles (Treadmill) + strength training (Upper Body/Abs)
Wednesday--Rest (Not planned)
Thursday--Kickboxing Class followed by 3 slow Miles (Treadmill)
Saturday--[goal = 6.2 mile group run]
Sunday--[goal = 3-5 miles]
Week 3 Mileage...tbd
Week 3 Training Plan Goal = 15 Miles
Week 3 Notes...Having a great week. Feeling great and starting to get more sleep. Yay!! Started keeping a food journal and eating a lot better than previous weeks. Marathon training really forces you to pay close attention to your food choices or suffer the consequences! More notes on  Week 3 to come.
Thanks for reading!! This is the year for NO EXCUSES!! If you hit a road block, climb over it or tear it down. Either way, get on the other side and press on!!
Formula for success...
Exercise + Proper diet + Consistency = success!
Blessings to you in the new year.
Busy times having a baby, moving, getting ready for the holidays, etc. As of Monday I am officially off the reserve as I have taken on 2 new goals. Earlier this year I blogged about goal planning and mentioned that you should push yourself. These goals are both going to push the envelope and test me like never before. I have started training for the Cambridge Half Marathon in March of 2012 and for the London Marathon in April of 2012.
So you are probably wondering how I got into London....
True story...back in May of this year I found out about the open ballot to apply for the London Marathon in April 2012. At that time I was 3 months pregnant and thought it would be fun to say that I applied. If you have ever applied or heard about the ballot system for this event, it is about a 20% chance or less of getting a place in the marathon. If you don't get a place this route then you can run for a charity and raise the minimum of 2000 pounds or however much they require for the various charities. At the time of applying I decided to donate my registration money to charity since I usually give money each year to various charities. I had decided to roll the dice and let the powers that be decide my fate for this race. If I got lucky then I would train (less than 5 months after giving birth to my 4th child) and if not then no hard feelings. In October I received a magazine and letter saying that I didn't get in via the ballot system BUT did gain entry via a Bequest Draw. The Bequest Draw was a special drawing where 1000 people from those donating money to charity were accepted into the marathon. I take this as a sign from God since my charitable nature gained me entry into this race.
So here I am at Day 3 of training. I gave birth to my son 5 weeks ago and am feeling pretty good (besides from the sleep deprivation). I am currently nursing and hope to blog about that aspect during the training to give people some perspective on the effects of running while nursing. I would like to breastfeed at least 6 months but at this point I am not sure if this is realistic given that my son has a healthy appetite and was 10 lbs 11 oz at birth. Last year I made it 7.5 months nursing my 3rd son while marathon training. I have been carefully watching my fluid and food intake to make sure I am staying properly hydrated and getting in enough nutrients to support breastfeeding. I am also tracking my weight loss as it is recommended that nursing moms lose no more than 1 pound a week. So far so good and as of this post I have had no issues with milk supply. I have lost about 28 pounds since giving birth and hope to lose a pound a week through training. Long term goals include losing 30 pounds during the next year so I can reach the middle BMI range for my height.
What does Half Marathon and Marathon Training Look Like?
I am using Hal Higdon's Marathon Training Plan. He is one of many experienced marathoners and coaches. His attritbutes include running over 110 marathons and his work with training people for the Chicago Marathon. I had success with his program last year and had no injuries when training for my first marathon. He has many different programs that include everything from walk to run programs to advanced programs. This includes many distances from 5K to full marathons. I also like that this 'guide' can be tailored based on my fitness goals and schedule. The Half Marathon falls perfectly into this 18 week plan and will be a tune up for my marathon.
Marathon Training Schedule: Novice 1
Week
Mon
Tue
Wed
Thur
Fri
Sat
Sun
This week I took Monday as a rest day and ran Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday I ran 3.5 miles and Wednesday I ran 5 miles. This is a little above the recommendations but my paces have been slow and steady. After having one marathon under my belt I find it hard to run 3 miles. If you have ever run a half or full marathon then you know what I am talking about. I will also say that your body does recall these miles and the training does get easier with time and experience.
I have 2 more runs to complete this week and am mentally prepared for the training at this point. Physically I have a long way to go but I am taking it one day at a time as I get stronger and fitter.
Stay tuned for more blogs about my training and 2012 goals.
One final note....
For this marathon training I have identified weak areas and am committed on working on those weaknesses. After doing HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) classes during the pregnancy I have discovered that I need more core and upper body work. For 2012 I am focused on developing the complete package and making sure that I don't ignore these areas (something that runners can easily forget).
The other day, I was checking myself out in the window. As a woman, its hard not to stare at imperfections. Being pregnant, its even harder and may induce tears. While I am not concerned about my big belly as it expands to ginormous proportions, I do worry about the other areas. I look at my calves, my thighs, my arms, my neck, and my expanding nose. I may not be able to control my belly, but I do feel like I have control over some of these other areas that don't need to grow. Areas that don't need the extra fat deposits since they have little to do with helping me push my baby out in a few months. I wonder what I can do to make these areas shine bright and if I will ever reach my former glory days as a hot speedster racing around the track.
As I was staring at my reflection in the window, I was using laserbeams to mark areas that pass or fail. I kept trying to get up on my toes so I could see my favorite part, my calves. Then I started with 'The Gun Show'. I seriously hate when I have poor definition especially when this results in flabby triceps. I will do just about anything to keep my arms from jiggling. All of the sudden as I am analyzing all of this, my husband screams out to me from the kitchen and says, "Quit staring at yourself. You look beautiful. Your only gaining weight in your belly". This melts my heart. Having my soulmate love me even when I feel 'fat' makes me smile. Who cares if he is grossed out by the belly. Who cares if he gets squimish when he sees the baby move inside of me. He is the only mirror I really need to reflect on in times of crisis. His opinion matters and counts, even over my own during these hormonal times.
What do you look at in the mirror? What are you telling yourself everyday? Do you see your imperfections or do you focus on the good stuff? Or, Do you think you are Hot Stuff?
For me, it takes daily effort to love myself for who I am at the moment, not who I was or who I may become. Many of my younger years were spent with little worth and very low self-esteem and self-confidence. Spending my younger years feeling like 'the ugly duck', it really has been a challenge to overcome since it is so deeply rooted. To overcome some of this self doubt and criticism I focus on how beautiful and unique God has made me. Different from all others, even if I am told that I have twins around the world. I also put the effort in everyday to make improvements. Having this power and knowing that I can change things that I don't like about myself, gives me daily comfort and peace. A reason to fight another day and keep going.
I love to learn about myself and love exploring my limits as a human. I also love learning about other people. What makes people tick? What do they think about themselves? How did they become the person that they are today? Sometimes I think we all are too quick to judge others based on events, attitudes, and personalities. Sometimes we have greater understanding and respect for people if we know where they are coming from. I try to love people for who they are. Sometimes its not easy, but at least I make the effort. I also can see the beauty in others, even though they may not see it in themselves.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. No matter where you come from or where you are going, today is the only day that matters. Make goals, work on imperfections, and try to love the person staring back at you in the mirror. Remove negativity from your personal space and choose to be around positivity. This includes friends, family, events, and how you talk to and about others. Focus on your attributes and side note the weaknesses. Put them aside for later or mark as 'WORK IN PROGRESS'. If you have children, note how they see you. They don't see flaws, only the person that nurtures them and loves them. Help to build that confidence in your kids too so they don't have problems down the road. No sense in passing negativity on to them. Especially since they will be caring for you in later years!
"Yesterday is History. Tomorrow is a Mystery. But Today is a Gift. That is why it is called The Present".
Till next time.
Anyone that knows me, knows that I LOVE TO WORKOUT.  I often fantasize about running all day long and wonder how far I could go before my legs would give out. While I enjoy exercise and staying fit, I am in maintenance mode while I protect my most treasured gift, my growing baby. The idea behind prenatal fitness is an easy concept to understand.
                          HEALTHY MOM = HEALTHY BABY.
Now that I am getting ready to have my 4th child, I have learned a lot of lessons along the way. Carrying around extra pounds in past pregnancies has taught me and my body some hard truths.
1. Being overweight can make for a bumpy 9 months. Some of you may be lucky and not have any issues, but others can relate. I reached my highest weight at the end of my 2nd pregnancy and had complications with pre-eclampsia. With my first 3 pregnancies I had high blood pressure and back pain throughout. I attribute these problems to excess weight. If you are reading this and not pregnant yet, get started on reaching your ideal weight. If you are pregnant & overweight, read on. You are not a lost cause just yet!
2. Being overweight and/or gaining too much = difficult recovery! Lack of fitness is the main problem here. Often we work so hard at preparing the nursery, but we fail to prepare ourselves for the BIG DAY. The fun exercise of childbirth is often compared to running a marathon. How many of us train for this extreme event?
3. If you thought losing weight before pregnancy was hard, try losing weight with a newborn! The extra weight gained during pregnancy seems twice as hard to lose as it did before. No sleep makes for a crabby unmotivated mommy. If you are nursing, it is even harder to lose weight because you have to maintain your calorie intake to support your hungry baby. It is not advised to start insane high-intensity workouts while breastfeeding. You will quickly find that if you workout too hard or too much, your supply will be in danger. But, I do encourage breastfeeding. Its free and the long list of benefits include those for both you and the baby.
4. PREGNANCY IS NOT A DISEASE!! The older I get, the more I stand by this statement. It's a state of mind that we should all reflect on. We all have symptoms during pregnancy, some of us more than others. While we may FEEL like it is a disease, we need to ask ourselves: "Is the pregnancy causing these issues or is it because we aren't as healthy as we should be?"  Chew on that for awhile!
5. YOU ARE NOT REALLY SUPPOSE TO EAT FOR TWO! Most nutritionists agree that you should really only consume 300 extra calories a day. If we ate for two, we would be consuming 1200-2000 extra calories a day. YIKES!! Step away from the twinkies, cupcakes, and sodas. Tell your hormones that this is not an all-you-can-see and eat buffet. Better yet, lock your kitchen. Seriously! After having an 11 pound baby and wondering if he would actually fit via natural methods, I really have to warn you (and remind myself) to watch your intake carefully.
WHY EXERCISE?
"Maintaining a regular exercise routine throughout your pregnancy can help you stay healthy and feel your best. Regular exercise during pregnancy can improve your posture and decrease some common discomforts such as backaches and fatigue. There is evidence that physical activity may prevent gestational diabetes, relieve stress, and build more stamina needed for labor and delivery" (WebMD, 2009).
Before embarking on exercise during pregnancy, talk to your provider first. Ask them what they recommend, especially if you are considering a new exercise program. Whether you start the pregnancy as a fitness guru or with no clue what a kegel is, you should be able to workout. Follow your provider's advice and do your own research as to what will work for you!
What should you be aiming for while working out?
"The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends 30 minutes or more of moderate exercise per day on most if not all days of the week, unless you have a medical or pregnancy complication" (WebMD, 2009). So with all that said, time to get busy!
Exercise Tips
1. Heart Rate--Gauge your exercise by how well you can talk. This will indicate how hard your heart is working during exercise. For example, if you can have a full conversation and still have plenty of energy to stop a stray cat from running into the road while facebooking about it, then you probably need to amp it up a bit. But, if you can't even breath, let alone talk, then SLOW DOWN. Do what feels right without going crazy.
Does your heart rate need to be a certain rate when working out?
According to Dr. Roger W. Harms, "Years ago, some experts recommended a heart rate of no more than 140 beats a minute for exercise during pregnancy. Today, however, heart rate limits aren't typically imposed during pregnancy. For healthy women, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity — preferably spread throughout the week — without any specific heart rate limits" (Mayo Clinic, n.d.).
2.  Track your exercise using internet software. There are tons of free apps on the internet. My personal favorites include LoseIt, MyFitnessPal, Livestrong.com, and MapMyFitness. These apps also help you track your diet too so you can see what nutrients and calories you are actually eating.
3. Find other preggo moms to workout with. This helps to hold you accountable.
3. Stay Hydrated and make sure you are eating healthy. Notice the difference in how you feel when you eat foods loaded with good nutrients versus foods with lots of fat, sugar, and calories.
4.  Listen to your body. Sleep when needed, Rest when needed, and try your best to be consistent.
Forms of Exercise
Pregnancy causes many changes in the female body, thanks to hormones. I highly recommend doing a good warm-up and cool-down to avoid injury. Taking these gradual steps will allow you to have a safe workout, day-in and day-out.
1.  Running/Walking--If you are a runner or walker, continue doing these things throughout pregnancy. How do you know when you should cut back? Listen to your body! It will tell you. With any of these exercises, don't be afraid to sweat during pregnancy. Well, don't be afraid to sweat a little MORE during pregnancy. In this pregnancy, I have perfected the Run/Waddle. I am late in my 2nd trimester and try to run at least 1-2x per week. Unfortunately, my body sometimes thinks differently. Whatever happens on the trail or treadmill, give it your best and be prepared to make adjustments as needed.
2. Yoga--I love yoga and wish I could do this more often. Yoga has many benefits during pregnancy. For example, it helps to improve your circulation, reduce swelling. removes toxins, and strengthens muscles and joints. I enjoy yoga because it helps with back pain and is a great breathing exercise. Its also nice because the music reminds me of getting a massage so I can quickly find my happy place. If you have kids, invite them to do yoga with you. My kids enjoy yoga and get pretty serious when the mats come out.
3. Strength Training--If you haven't been using weights prior to pregnancy, then I would limit what you do during pregnancy. Otherwise, keep lifting weights. Focus on performing more reps and less intensity in your exercises. Watch for form and limit exercises that may place too much pressure on the abdominal and pelvic muscles.
4. Cardio--One of my favorite cardio workouts is the Elliptical machine. I really think that this was made for pregnant mommies. With any cardio, watch your heart rate and your ability to talk. If it is too painful or too intense, back off and take it easy. Another great cardio workout is ZUMBA. Zumba is not only fun, but a great way to workout the entire body. You can tailor moves to make them easier or more comfortable too. Again, if anything hurts or looks dangerous, don't do it.
6. Cardio/Toning Mix--I have quite a few DVD's that I enjoy. Most of these combine cardio with sculpting. If you go this route, find DVD's that have different degrees of difficulty (beginner, moderate, advanced). Also, find ones that are customized to your trimester. A few that I enjoy include:
Summer Sanders Prenatal Workout--this combines cardio with toning. You need bands for this workout and some pillows. This one is great because it has different workouts for each trimester. You can also choose a quick workout versus the full length workout.
The Perfect Pregnancy Workout Vol. 1--another great workout from a former Circue-du-Soleil performer. This workout is more sculpting than cardio, but your heart does get a workout. The exercises are grouped by fitness level and you can easily modify all exercises.
7. CrossFit--For those of you CrossFit ladies out there, there are great resources for you to continue your CrossFit journey. Check out CrossFit Moms on facebook for the WOD and other support. I have never done CrossFit but I am a fan of this intense workout/diet and the results speak for themselves.
8. Swimming--Many fitness centers have swimming workouts designed for Pregnancy. This is another great exercise that takes pressure off the back and joints while allowing you to get a great workout.
Happy exercising and thanks for reading my blog. If you like what you read, please invite others to my site. Don't forget to leave feedback!
For all those that are passionate about running, I thought I would share some inspiring words from a new facebook page that I adore! Its a Love/Hate relationship for sure, but I am definitely glad that I found my LOVE of running again. While I may never be as fast as I use to be, I will always LOVE getting out there and staying in shape. Its been a rough time lately since I am preggerz. Can't run as much as I would like, but I still walk quite a bit and race the kids from time to time. Funny to look at but I don't care. I LOVE to run!!
<img border="0" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK_e_Oz4cV26bCRe9cELugnJ95w1aseUokXvzuBx8wIba41OBsfC-KoMQngu_uty6Vt0fHKGOQE-dqvsbffb5VEi7C3sg5xNb9uwr2a3yz19d8jbr0Y_gJDN_v21v-3WSvhLZIlePvc40/s320/run+blog+2.jpg" t$="true" width="320" />
I LOVE this picture. I have run across many different runners in my life, but the ones most inspiring are amputees that are out there with me getting it done. In my final miles of my first marathon, I ran across one such person. Perfect timing and brings tears to my eyes just thinking about that person accomplishing their goals despite setbacks.
                     PICTURES SAY 1000 WORDS.
I just saw this picture and started cracking up. What a great motivating sign to have in a Marathon!! BTW, fellow marathoners, what mile marker would you like to see this at? lol.
Namaste to my fellow runners and those that LOVE THE RUN!!
Recently, I read a post on facebook that really annoyed me. Wait, not really annoyed me---PISSED ME OFF! I was reading about someone who had lost confidence in themselves and pretty much already decided that it was time to buy that shovel to start digging their grave. Tragic right?
Why did the comment bother me so much? Well, the person was honestly happy with the STATUS QUO and lacked any motivation to do anything. BTW, status quo people really get under my skin and make me cringe with every fiber of my being. I have always told my husband over the years to please pull the plug if I can no longer function as the motivated, energetic, and happy person that I have always been. In the same respect, he knows to kick my ass if I lose hope or lose the drive that defines who I am as a person. And I don't mean a love tap, an actual ass-kicking, because he knows me and what it would take to get to me. I am not motivated 24/7, in case you think I am some kind of robot or superhuman. There are days that I lack motivation, but I am a visionary and always seem to look forward to the next big goal or milestone.
Since I am dedicated to health and helping those around me through service, I feel like a failure when I can't reach people, especially those closest to me. I realize that I can't motivate someone, but to see that someone has given up seriously makes me cry for them. During my lifetime, I have come to realize that we are HUMAN. Our hearts pump to supply nourishment to our bodies for a reason. THAT REASON IS TO LIVE.  Not just sit there everyday and enjoy a sedentary life while those around you work, but so that you can do something too. I think its a waste of human life to see someone that doesn't want more for themselves or someone that has no goal whatsoever. Sometimes, when I read or see negativity around me, I feel like buying a bunch of shovels and giving them to people that have truly given up the desire to live. Taking life for granted is a pretty pathetic thing.
I learned some of the best things about living from family members. I remember my grandmother always full of life and energy. She enjoyed her life to the end, although she spent quite a bit of time telling people that it was her time to go be with her husband. I know she would always laugh at me in my youth, especially when I told her that I had goals of her being on the Today Show celebrating her 100 years of life. While she fell short of that, I will always celebrate her life and her legacy.
   Why are some people motivated while others have no drive?
If you take two people of the same age, what makes one person different from the other?
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiITX5-O1OSqzU3RKfIJdEmr3-BUY9-RQsvrhqurIC2sm2nng3IliYVMIYffQQ3vgv9vmvBWoqWFbg-3SdFaVA_cGL2xF7zo1AfqOSGO_sle8QrPu1Ds1zRTwZIWAEpvreJ3XlqVWiXlko/s1600/PEOPLE.bmp" t$="true" />
Life experiences?
Jobs?
Family upbringing?
Accomplishments?
Failures?
While I may not know the answer, I believe that we all can GET MOTIVATED. We all can get inspired by those around us that are doing positive things and going places. I didn't come from the best background. My parents divorced at an early age and I had to learn how to sink or swim. I could give 1000 reasons why I shouldn't be successful, motivated, determined, inspired, and/or driven. For example, I could say that I am
not thin enough,
tall enough,
black enough,
white enough,
pretty enough,
rich enough,
athletic enough...
the list can go on and on and on! But yet, I refuse to make excuses for myself. Everyday I work on ME and try to improve with age, just like a fine wine. No one will ever be perfect, yet we shouldn't settle for imperfection, if that makes any sense. Why let the past define who we are? Long ago, I decided that the past is the past. All the good, bad, and indifferent really doesn't mean ANYTHING except some pictures in a scrapbook and faded memories. Now the future is different. It holds possibility and promise. I dream of doing lots of things. I set goals for these things, even if some of them are crazy and ridiculous.
Why should you be any different?
So I say STEP AWAY FROM THE SHOVEL. Don't make someone feel that they have to start making "preparations" and writing your eulogy because you have given up. Whether you are going on 20 or far past retirement, sit down and think about what is most important to you. Write down some goals or things you have always wanted to do. Share those goals with others especially those that are inspiring and positive.
Whether you die tomorrow or in 50 years, what do you want your legacy to be? What will your tombstone read? Rather than watching life pass you by, take life by the balls and make it yours. Take everything in the past, especially the GARBAGE and throw it to the wind. Each day is a new day and a gift from God! A day that you can do ANYTHING you set your mind to do.
In the end, it comes down to a simple decision.
Take the first step and decide to LIVE!
<img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieAQgYPqumyqB2cxmwzdeIPPYNlHkp0OrijS9WxvxTonqf7eXWeSH71bNu1wKlnKXip-WjEymL8R3kKxkfjr8i8cHDFBoDSp0o3SJiSDAtk9hkTKZ-vx8Tt-F4JBPJpzUyFGPdPvyiXDE/s400/MOTIVATION.jpg" t$="true" width="400" />
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoeTHk-nDAVnEIvD-avwxgWzyUP46bQDJebxCEIyMwOTPznqqN7lqD1wlOG0Tp6VdmnDf0Q8hUtye5eeEmMx4g6cR8zqOg_y8hgfrTqw-wR154BpGbSGK8is2NhYJ5w3DPHcwBWFR8IuM/s1600/evil+face.jpg" t$="true" />
Is this wrong to get your sweat on when you are emotional?
I don't think so!!  In fact, I think that you burn more calories and push yourself harder when you have something bothering you. I call it the Jillian Effect (named for my favorite trainer—Jillian Michaels). In this episode, she is in your face making you confront your fears and making you mad for not manning up to your potential. You workout with something to prove and won't let anything get in your way.
There are plenty of days that I exercise like this. Usually it’s because I have let the day get by me without getting my burn on. By the time my husband gets in the door, he can tell that I need to workout. In man terms, it’s the equivalent to pumping iron. I assume that is what men do when they are frustrated. Whatever the workout, it becomes the focus of sheer anger-tude and RAGE!  If I am lucky enough to run when this happens, I take off like a bat out of hell and don't look back. With each passing stride and foot strike, the anger slowly drains out of me, bringing me back to reality and back to MY HAPPY PLACE.
Why do we have to be mad to work out this way?
Why can't we CONSISTENTLY hit it up with a focused, centered, and determined mentality? It’s not that we are SCARED to sweat or exercise, OR ARE WE?
In my first blog, I talked about marathon training. It’s a good exercise to understand where this fear comes from. Training for a marathon WAS pretty scary for me at first. My FEAR was always that I would die if I pushed myself too far. I was afraid in the early training that my heart would reach a point, that it no longer wanted to continue and just quit. I WAS AFRAID OF DEATH. I even saw a Cardiologist, only to find nothing wrong and get a clean bill of health. I found out through training, that my brain would always get in the way and try to sabotage my efforts. I had to train my brain that I would survive each new distance. This took a lot of work and something that I still will need to conquer with each new goal. During the course of training and running my first marathon, I learned to LET GO! It would be better to workout, improve my health, AND add years to my life, then risk dying young from Diabetes, Heart Disease, or anything else that might be waiting to attack me from my gene pool.
<img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoq2O5j5Snz3B0KYY6Lh8AF7mSp-lCI0h34irx7LcJ9MnsgZFnvTf-yWVEi6KagkN4X3CgRM9XzMAHmzFZjUAgeUOcvpqMkhRBbB5Lqy22Z2mq02aQDU_YOj7NNpCcGzU6UGg6lAsarfE/s320/marathon+pic.jpg" t$="true" width="213" />
So ask yourself, what is HOLDING you back? What is stopping you from unleashing your beast and going full steam?
STOP BEING AFRAID.  WORKOUT & FACE THE FEAR.
Look at those around you that you LOVE. Look at your life and all of it's POTENTIAL. Decide that you want to stick around for awhile to see how the story ends. When the pain comes, and it WILL come, just SMILE. Acknowledge that you are feeling pain because you are ALIVE and push through it till the end. What you will learn will take you farther than you could ever imagine.
Till next time!
Cindy
A year ago, I joined the Green Monster Movement and commited to make my own smoothies without using the kits you find in the store. These kits are usually loaded with sugar on top of the fruit. I think it defeats the purpose to make a smoothie then load it up with lots of sugar. Plus, if you share this with kids, they really don't need any extra sugar. As part of the movement, I make my own Green Monster smoothie. Here is the recipe:
2 cups Spinach
1 cup Almond Milk (or any other milk you like)
1 banana
1/2-1 cup strawberries
Ice
Directions:
Place the ingredients into the blender in the following order: 1) spinach, 2) banana, 3) strawberries, 4) milk. The reason for this order is so the heavier ingredients weigh down the spinach and keep it from flying up around the blender and sticking to the side. Blend everything on the highest setting for 1 minute or so. Finally, add ice and blend on the ice setting. Enjoy!
Side note: For my sugar-lovers--add a little honey or vanilla extract if you like it sweeter. Even with the extra honey, its still better than ice cream or many other 'treats'. Also, you can add frozen fruit versus the fresh fruit for an easier mix.
Why do I drink these smoothies?
1) They are filling and I don't have that need to eat for several hours after having one.
2) So healthy and good for you. This is loaded with all the 'good' stuff. This is great to make after a strenous workout to aid in muscle recovery and repair.
3) Endless supply of energy. This is loaded with protein and will help you stay productive during the day or at night. Make this as a dessert and rest assured that you won't be looking for a snack the rest of the night.
4) The kids will love it. Build up how cool it is because it is green. Even my son loves it and he is not a big veggie lover.
Seems to be the question of the hour. I love when people ask me how I manage to do things. First of all, I am one of those 'all-or-nothing' types that either has to be insanely busy or I shut down and am completely useless. Wish I wasn't that way, but its just a fact of life for me.
I like to STAY active. I do this by working out every day. Even if I can't get a workout in, I try to get outside and play with the kids. I think this is most important for women, especially after having a baby. One of the best ways to ward off problems with Postpartum Depression is by ACTIVITY such as exercise, getting outside, and being around people.
Alicia Miller, a social worker and psychotherapist, comments on why exercise helps with various forms of depression.
"Regular physical activity promotes the production of the same mood-regulating neurotransmitters that are also increased by antidepressant medications. Additionally, exercise reduces certain immune system chemicals that can make depression worse. Exercise tends to increase your sense of self-esteem, promotes a positive mood and encourages restful sleep" (LiveStrong.com, 2011).
So based on these findings, why not help your body out by improving your mood and getting sleep, when and if you can. I know that when I workout, I feel like I can conquer anything. Every day I get to experience this feeling by simply sweating and working out. Why deprive yourself of this natural high?
How to workout with small children?
Sometimes this can be easier said than done. As moms, we have to be creative and resourceful. I will blog on this later, but include your children as much as possible. My kids love to do zumba, yoga, aerobics, and run. As parents, my hubby and I set the bar and include them on our journey of health and well-being. Just be careful when you workout with them because one day they will ask you to do exercise X, Y, or Z. Don't you dare tell them no! Stop whatever you are doing and exercise with them, even if for only a few minutes. You build strong relationships but also encourage them to stay healthy. With the terrible childhood obesity rates in the world, they need reinforcement more than ever.
The other way that I workout is by losing sleep. Get up 30 minutes early and do some yoga, aerobics, or anything that gets your heart pumping. Wait--did I just tell you to lose sleep to workout? I sure did! I think working out is worth losing sleep for. Personally I function better throughout the day when I workout versus when I get more sleep. I know I just lost a few of you, but TRY it and see if my method helps you function better throughout the day. If you do try it, leave some feedback for me. You won't hurt my feelings.
Another key to staying sane while raising a family is to have your own IDENTITY. What do I mean by this? No, don't go and get another personality or anything. If your like me, its hard enough remembering things with one identity. I can't imagine being responsible for more!
Develop a way of having time to yourself. I don't get much of this time away from my kids, but I make the most of it when I do. Again, be resourceful and call on family and friends to help watch the kids or call on friends to help you have a little adult-time. This could be going out to dinner and a movie with your significant other, having a GNO (Girl's Night Out), or just getting away from the kids and doing some therapeutic shopping without being pulled/nagged by your children. Our sanity definitely depends on our ability to separate our mommy life from our adult life.
I know some of you have issues with leaving the kids, but JUST LET GO!! I promise you will function better if you can get your own free-time or 'Get Out of Jail' pass.
Stay active and stay happy until next time!
If you have ever tried to lose weight, build muscle, increase energy, or tackle Mt Everest, you know that it doesn't come easy.
What is the magic secret?
Surprise!!!  The secret is that there is no secret. It takes consistent effort every day to get the job done. Yes, people take short-cuts, and by short-cuts I mean surgery and crazy fad diets. What is learned by these short-cuts? I am not an advocate of surgery unless it is to remove leftover skin or for something that is needed. And just to set the record straight, I don't think that breast implants are 'needed'! Sorry guys!
How do we get from point A to point B?
Define Point A and Point B: Where are you currently and what is your desired end result?
Time Frame: How quickly are you wanting to get your desired result?
Set Benchmark Goals: Space out your goals during this time frame. Set realistic goals that are achievable. We can't all be rocket scientists and work for NASA, but we all can get through a 5K in a few weeks with very little training.
Accountability: Tell the world what you are planning to do. If this is a weight loss or a get fit goal, consider using software linked with Facebook. Nothing says I am dead serious than posting it on your facebook wall for everyone to scrutinize.
Expect Adversity: Anticipate naysayers and watch how quickly people build obstacles for you. Get ready to jump over hurdles and karate chop some bricks along the way.
Ready, Set, Action: Now that you defined your goal and set mini-goals along the way, get moving.
Surround yourself with people that have similar interests and similar goals: Talk and hang around people that support and lift you up. Find a partner in crime that wants the same thing and see how much faster you get there.
So with all that said, GET 'ER DONE and don't look back. YOU CAN DO IT!! I KNOW YOU CAN!
I have been encouraged to blog for the longest time and finally decided that it's time to share my knowledge, experience, and love of all things related to health.
Let me share a little about me as I begin on this new journey. I am a mom of 3 with a baby in the oven. As far as my education, I have been working in health care for many years, many as an EMT-Paramedic. I always knew I wanted to help others in the medical arena. I owe a lot of this to my mom, a nurse of 40+ years who also spent quite a few years as an EMT herself. I first became CPR certified at the age of 10 and knew how to take a blood pressure shortly after that. I was also blessed to go on my first EMS call around that time with my mom and stepdad. I have my Bachelors in Biomedical Science and a Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration. After working in Healthcare Administration for a few years, I fell in love with teaching and am currently pursuing my Ph.D in Public Health. I definitely agree that education is important and love learning about health through research.
As far as experience is concerned, I have always been athletic. Part of that is genetics. My mom thought I was going to be a boy and so she got a very competitive and determined baby girl. The other part is my love of sports. I played basketball for MANY years. Since I wasn't very tall at 5'8, I decided to skip college hoops and focus on running instead. I was a sprinter for a Division 1 school in the midwest. This is where I learned many tough lessons as I decided to train for the Heptathalon my Sophomore year. After that experience I learned a few things about myself. First, I can definitely heal fast after wiping out on the track learning to hurdle. Second, I don't give up easily and thirdly, I LOVE proving to myself that I can do things that I thought were never possible! After 4 years of running at the college level, I smashed ever record that I set for myself and realized that this goes for life goals as well.
I am most proud of my current achievements. I fell in love with running after being away from competition for several years. This time it was with running LONG distances. After I had my 2nd baby, I started going for runs to get out of the house. I would run 3 miles at a time usually and one day wanted to run more. Then I would start running 5 miles and still wanted to run more. Next thing I knew, I was running 8-10 miles and LOVED it. Not sure why or what switch went off but I loved being free. I loved running outside. I also loved being able to think without any child, baby, husband, friend, or co-worker bothering me.
Shortly after this love of running, I took a leap of faith and decided to train for a marathon. For me, it was a CRAZY idea. I blame God for planting the seed to run this absurd distance. Who really runs 26.2 miles. Maybe old people with nothing better to do, right? I decided to take one day at a time (my motto for everything) and just get 'er done. Three weeks before my first anticipated marathon, I discovered I was pregnant with my 3rd child. Oops! Especially since I was also training with my baby sister at the time. At this time I decided to back away since I had a bad history with getting sick early in pregnancy. BUT, I was determined to train again after the baby and owed my sister a marathon. Paybacks are a bitch!
Less than 9 months after giving birth, I crossed the finish line of my first marathon. I have to give special props to a dear friend that decided to run with me after also having a baby that same year. We trained together and just did it. If you know anything about training for this, it takes lots of time. Time that most new moms don't have. Luckily I had quite a few hours of sleep that I donated to the cause. We all know that it's overrated anyway!
So here I am, pregnant with number 4. Later this year, I will have 4 kids under 4. [Insert your own crazy/insane comment here]. I am very excited to run another marathon again. These events are highly addictive. I am also trying my best to stay in shape throughout this pregnancy. A couple of things about me. I LOVE working out. I LOVE to sweat. I try to eat healthy but as many women know, (especially while pregnant) it can be a challenge. I hope to inspire you through my motivation, stories, knowledge, and encouragement. I am living testament that if I can get it done with all the obstacles in my way, so can you. Just make a decision and step out on faith. Thanks for reading my blog and I look forward to sharing more in the future.
God bless,
