In-spite of high intrinsic value of sciences, arts are more popular for sensory gratification they provide.

Comparative Roles of Art and Science

Interrelation between Prosperity, Health and Lifestyle

In my childhood with a frail body, I used to envy and wonder why children of my age belonging to a family working as casual laborers in our agricultural fields were so healthy. Actually, those children used to provide full-time support to their parents in the work while me with my siblings used to be busy in our studies. We were not very rich but for owning agricultural land were better off than the laborers in the village.

Children of poor families live in dirty environment and develop dirty habits in themselves. Their immune systems respond and adapt to their environment and provide them with protection from getting sick. Since they work hard, their digestion system digests whatever edible reaches their respective bellies making them healthy.

Conversely, children who keep busy with education and live in clean environment, have less of physical activities making their respective digestive systems weak. Their immune systems through adapting to their clean environment remain unable to fight any adversities in the environment. Therefore, such children stay normal in their preset conditions only, else they fall sick with minor changes.

With a similar observation, an author preached to live with dirty habits for the immune system to work better and hence stay healthy.

Incidentally, the poor family I said about in my opening paragraph of this write-up, out of three siblings of nearly my age, two have died and the third is incurably sick of asthma, while I, at 63, still feel to be at midway of my life. They are still poor as before, and me in a comfortable state of work of income. What has changed through the age factor of the poor family, I wonder.

As age advances, the immune system fails to provide protection against dirty environment as is the case in childhood. Therefore, health of poor persons gradually decays with advancement of age. For those getting education and living comfortably in clean environment, they become more conscious about their health and include adequate precautions in their respective lifestyles to stay healthy and have longevity.

There is a third scenario for consideration with respect to prosperity and health. My 10 years younger brother is richer than me, had a two-wheeler since his youthful days and now has a car for mobility. When on official duties, official car was available to me else, I always preferred to use a bicycle for my local mobility. Now, my said brother is unable to walk even a 1 km distance, and has many diseases in his body and worries in his mind. I can comfortably walk for about 5/6 km without feeling exhausted for my walks in routine life.

This third factor, I have added here, is to underline effect of prosperity on health through lifestyle. Through all the three cases above, it becomes clear that it is not the prosperity that matters for health, but it is the lifestyle that determines your health in the long run.

Here are a few minimal and simple clues about having a healthy lifestyle -

Include Physical Activities in Routines

When I was working as a guest faculty at an Engineering College at Jaipur in 90s, a retired Chief Engineer used to insist on me for a morning walk along with him, but I could never make it. I had enough walking included in my routines of going to theaters, college and market and visiting friends, etc. I discovered that the same friend had hired a boy for delivering milk at his doorstep to avoid collecting it from the dairy about a half kilometer away from his home. This was also an early morning job. I advised my friend instead of going for a morning walk with friends, he should walk for picking up milk from the dairy.

When you have fixed something out of your routine engagements, chances are high of missing it. But, if the exercise in clubbed with some routine activity chances of missing it are rare.

Take Things Lightly

The world is too big to be turned upside down if you miss some of your important activity or achievement. With a substitute often available for everything missed, you miss nothing important. Therefore, take things lightly, not to create anxieties in your mind. A person fails physically only once or twice, but does that mentally hundreds of times. Don’t buy mental tensions for yourself for any reason.

Wait, let Reasoning regulate your Emotions

The worst blunders, like suicides, revenge, etc, are committed under emotional frenzies which are always transient. The transiency of an emotional jerk in itself is an indication that it is against wisdom. So, when under emotional pressure, cool down and wait for some time to let the storm pass. Soon, your reasoning power shall appear to take you on the right path.

As a person matures, he/she appears to be less emotional while, in fact, he/she relies more on reasoning and let it regulate the emotions. For the same reasons, crimes like suicides are often committed by youths. So, give yourself some maturity of thinking even at the young age.

Live by your own Convictions

Most of the persons commit mistake of living to please others rather than themselves, thus killing their spirit of individuality in thoughts, words and conduct. This weakens a person mentally through developing a hidden inferiority complex of inability to do what he/she wanted to do. A mentally weak person has a high tendency to suffer depression, affecting his/her overall performance leading to more problems before him/her. Kill this enemy at the genesis itself.

Go for what you like to look, say or do. Once, people around you recognize you as a person of own convictions, they would begin appreciating you for whatever you do, even if it is an odd thing not to be expected in your society. I preach atheism to others coming in my contact. But at times, I too feel there were a God existing somewhere and doing his job. Here, I narrate some such situations.

Helplessness

When I find myself in a tight spot with unscrupulous elements in the society harming me with my inability to take revenge or punishing them for their misdeeds, many popular concepts like those of God, fate, Karma, etc come to my mind with a wish of real materialization of these concepts so that the unscrupulous elements get perished under burdens of their misdeeds.

My life, now-a-days, is mine only when I am online, with all the rest being superfluous to me. For this, I have a broadband connectivity from a government of India undertaking, BSNL (M/s Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) which remains often out of order with no official doing anything about attending the problems except directing temporarily employed unskilled and untrained laborers to attend to the problems. As a result, even a minor problem takes weeks for resolution. Under such a circumstance, I really with that there were a God to punish these high-salaried, high-profile officials of government undertakings without any sense of their responsibilities and duties.

Miracles and Ignorance

All miracles are considered to be of Divine origin, while in fact, these are products of human ignorance. The ocean of knowledge is infinite and can’t be commanded by any person, putting humans under shades of ignorance to differing degrees with respect to each other. This ignorance gives rise to miracles of different kinds to different persons. This is the greatest cause of existence of concept of God.

When a person realizes the vastness of knowledge and limitations of individual human mind and exposures, all miracles disappear giving rise to curiosity to understand the secret behind the miracles. Whole of human progress and evolution of human intellect are products of this curiosity to unfold secrets of miracles.

Persons with not recognizing this limitation of humans against vastness of knowledge, consider every phenomenon unknown to them as a Divine miracle with no curiosity to unfold the secret. Thus, these persons are stumbling blocks of human progress and its intellectual evolution.

Fear of the unknown

Future is always a dark horse for everybody while it is also a great concern to everybody. This creates a fear psychosis in a great majority of persons. To circumvent this fear, people need some support. This support was provided to them in the name of God and people agreed to this phantom. They were further terrorized by anger of God if He was not remembered and prayed by anybody. This terror further strengthened the fake existence of God in human minds.

Differentiating between Culture and Civilization

The word ‘culture’ is derived from ‘cult’ meaning thereby adhering to some new concept of living as preached by someone being or posing to be the pioneer of the society. A culture may have a multitude of followers but it is always a product of minds of few individuals. After choosing a cult, masses just follow the dictum without giving a thought, rather they are not free for a reasoning out of the cult. Therefore, a culture may be a trap to which a society is pushed into under its composition of conformists, by and large. Cultures take root and grow under shade of conformism only. Free thought always remains beyond its reach.

A civilization, there is no dictum or adherence but a collaborative endeavor of the society to improve quality of life with newer adjustments with the natural circumstances, and forming and defining social circumstances called norms of the society to which everyone is free to adhere or not. Thus, a civilization essentially involves a two-pronged strategy of adapting to natural circumstance and forming social norms of living.

Life and Conduct

Civilization is the way of life, while culture is the way of conduct. This brings us to point of understanding difference between life and conduct. Life is the Highest Common Factor (HCF) while conduct is the Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) where HCF and LCM have same connotations as in Arithmetic – science of numbers. Thus, all the common elements in lives of individuals in a society form civilization. None in the society can afford to live without these common factors without getting isolated from the society. For this reason, elements of civilization are considered as social norms.

Conduct of an individual, or a group thereof, may be different from that of others in the society. It is an artificial insertion of something into social norms or the civilization which may or may not succeed. Thus, a culture may be part of civilization but incapable of containing in itself the whole of civilization.

Those conversant with LCM and HCF, must be knowing that LCM of some numbers is always higher than HCF of these numbers. So, a culture of a society is more visible than the civilization of the humanity. Another reason for more visibility of culture is that the culture is meant for outer display while the civilization is for inner subscription by the people. A culture is an individualistic matter while the civilization encompasses the whole society. Parameter of a culture is number of its subscribers, while that of a civilization is number of norms to be adhered to by all.

Imposition and Subscription

Culture is created by imposing artificially preached beliefs by few individuals to begin with while the civilization gets developed by absorbing scientifically established facts of life and the Universe without any artificial imposition of these but their natural influence on the humanity. Thus, basic nature of civilization is of absorption of facts for devising better ways of living for people while that of a culture is of infusion of presumptions into conduct of its followers.

Norms of civilization are open to all for acceptance or not while those of a culture are imposed on the subscribers. Norms of civilization may be unacceptable for some but can’t be rejected by any, while those of a culture are open for acceptance or rejection.

Civilization is a global phenomenon while a culture may be a localized matter to begin with that may or may not encompass the global population in its fold. A culture binds the followers to certain dictums while the civilization allows the humanity to get free from binding notions of cultures, religions, faiths, sects, etc

During winters, many cooked food items don’t stale for three-four days. Normally, nobody in the backwards and poor village of mine takes such a food. A person visited me at that time for some help in recovering his money from an anti-social element. On seeing my food and pleasure I was getting by eating that, he was shocked for I am the highest educated person in the village and considered to be a fairly rich person by the villagers. He mentioned this thing to many others to shock them too. But for me, there was nothing for wondering, and I enjoy my own circumstances.

Circumstantial Factor

I live in the village alone and cook my own food for which there is no fixed schedule. So, I take whatever is readily available to me without any consideration of warmth, freshness or fineness. A majority of other men in the village have their families with them, get food freshly cooked by their wives and tend to reject any food even on a small pretext to show their superiority to their respective wives. I don’t have such a privilege of rejecting any food that comes my way. As a matter of habit since my childhood, I have never been particular about food and relish whatever comes my way. But for about two decades, I have become more health conscious than before, so take only nutrition of the food I get into consideration. Raw, rough foods suit me more than the modern superfine food items prevalent in the society.

Under these circumstances of mine, I am happily living and enjoying myself without looking at what others are doing or how they are living.

A Love Story

I have regained a loving relationship with one of my old online friend from America. We have never seen each other face-to-face and our contact is through some social networking sites only. We can’t afford to travel to meet each other and may be that we never meet in life. This may be a good reason for leaving the relationship or for being sad for our inability to meet. Still, we continue to have sweetness in the bond and joy of loving each other. This is all the more a great reason for us to be happy about without any sadness.

Factors for Feeling Good

I have given a thorough thinking and analysis on what may make me in particular, or any other in general, to feel good even under apparently adverse situations.

The first factor is the concept of not worrying about things impossible to achieve, with the conviction that we all have limitations, so can’t achieve everything we may desire. Of course, a still better option is not to have the desire itself but if it has raised its head, look at possibility of achieving under prevailing circumstances and eliminate it from the mind if it appears impossible to achieve. A great plus point of this philosophy of life is that if at some later time, the circumstances change and the desired thing is achieved, the pleasure of achieving would be manifold as compared to that with achieving with a hope.

Second factor that comes to my mind is to take a realistic view of things without being optimistic or pessimistic. Pleasure of being optimistic may prove to be short-lived leading to sorrows, and sadness of being pessimistic is bad even at its genesis. With a realistic view, you neither chase a mirage of optimism nor dip in sorrows of your inabilities. Here again, it is important for the person to understand his/her limitations and live accordingly with what comes under parameters of his/her own affordability.

The factor of feeling good is non-comparison with others realizing the fact of life and nature that each individual is uniquely created and no two match with each other. This concept makes the person independent of what others are doing or achieving or aspiring to be. Set your goals in accordance with yourself and pursue them by yourself for yourself.

The next factor of feeling good is not to bother what others would say or feel about you when you behave in your own way. Be a unique model for yourself in accordance with your convictions and have courage to be on your own. It comes to my general observation that a great majority of persons keep their lifestyles to please, impress and influence others rather than pleasing, impressing and influencing themselves.

. A thing needed much becomes a source of great pleasure when available. So, have a thing only when you badly need it. It makes the difference just like eating a food when you are hungry and eating the same food when your belly is full. For deriving maximum joy out of a thing, let your need of thing be immense. Or alternately, know what you need the most and have it. This way, your desires for many possessions get eliminated and you may have what you need and enjoy that.

The ultimate level of the organism is what is visible from outside and it only interacts with the external world. Here, I intend to discuss some issues relevant to human body, hence in the discussion that follows, the whole system is meant to be the human body.

These sub-systems have tissues which, in turn, are composed of cells. Substances keep on flowing in these levels from cellular to subsystem levels, as essential to and indicative of their working. These substances work as nutrients for different levels of the constitution. All the conveyances of nutrients and products made from them by cells are in fluid form, making the life an intricate composition of fluid flows from cellular to sub-system levels.

Nutrients, absorbed from the food we eat by our intestines, reach liver to get mixed up with the blood for being reached to cellular levels throughout the body. It depends on the nutrients quality, quantity and type how these nutrients are shared by various sub-system cells.

At cellular level, these processed nutrients manufacture new cells for growth and replacement of the damaged cells in tissues and for forming new tissues for growth. Some nutrients are further processed to be sent to tissue level to strengthen them. Here again, some nutrients are further processed and conveyed to sub-system level to provide immunity to the subsystem. Thus, at sub-system levels in the body, we have the finest of the nutrients pre-processed and pre-refined at cellular and tissue levels, while those at tissue levels are of medium quality and those at cellular levels are just raw. Thus, nutrients have three major roles in the body – growth, strengthening and immunity.

These multi-level processes are there in all living organisms including plants and trees and their produces – the seeds, which too are complete living organisms in their own rights, having all the four levels of their existence - cellular, tissue, sub-system and the whole. Similarly, human sperm and ovum too are complete living organisms.

Foods and Supplements

Some living organisms, such as food-grains, fruits, vegetables, animals, etc are used as foods by some other living organisms such as humans and wild animals, and also as raw materials for manufacturing food supplements, drugs and medicines for curing diseases in humans and pet animals. These raw materials too have four level constitutions as discussed above with storages of nutrients at the cell, tissue and subsystem levels. It is these nutrients that serve as foods and drugs.

When we try to extract oils from oilseeds, at the first and the easiest way, we get the nutrients from the sub-system level, the finest of nutrients contained in the seed. Next, with more efforts and processes, we get the medium quality of oil from the tissue level, leaving behind the raw nutrients at cellular level. The whole residual produce is often called pomace. Nutrients contained in pomace may be obtained through further processing of it. The same concept is applicable to getting other extracts from living organisms.

Various nutrients extracted from living organisms, such as food-grains, fruits, vegetables, animal fleshes, etc, too have three qualities as discussed above and they provide the same services to the consumer for which they were meant in the living organism – growth, strength and immunity. Thus, a nutrient affects the consumer depending on which level of constitution it has been taken from. The first extractions work for providing immunity, the second provide strength while the third obtained from cells contribute to growth of the consumer. This is how drugs are made from nutrients for various treatments.

Since, every living-being needs all the three attributes – growth, strength and immunity in differing proportions depending on the stage of growth, foods need to have all the three types of constituents to be full-fledged. This underlines importance of whole grains, fruits, etc in human foods.

Roles of Parents in a Person's Life

Jealousy and envy are two mean-alike words in general, but have quite different senses and influences on persons with these human traits. Each of us seems to be a victim of being jealous of others on some pretext or other. Most interestingly, one often become jealous with a person of his close acquaintance.

What is Jealousy
Jealousy is getting a heartburn when somebody else appears to be better off than you. It may be better treatment in the society, more wealth, or more beauty in the other person. When you are jealous, you don't try to analyze the realities of yourself and the other person, but get worried for harming the other in order to bring him/her down below your level. Indeed, this is a highly negative approach to things of competing negatively.

What is Envy
When you are envious of some one appearing to be better than you in social respect, wealth, health or beauty, etc., you try to find out why he/she is better placed than you. Instead of harming him/her, you try to make yourself better than him/her so that you are more respected in the society, or have more wealth, or look more beautiful, etc. than the other person.

This sets in a positive competition between the two of you to better than the other without harming each other, but by improving yourself. In the process, both of you improve your own characteristics. Thus, envy improves the whole society while the jealousy degrades it.

What to do to in an Jealous/Envious Situation
Firstly, if you are jealous of someone, replace your jealousy with envy. This is felt to be difficult when you find that the other person's capabilities are unsurpassable by you for your circumstantial limitations. this makes you helpless and you feel there is no way except to have jealousy and harm the other person to downgrade him/her to a level below that of yours. My advice is never do that.

There is always a better and positive solution to each and every problem faced by us. When you are jealous, find out the area in which the other person is superior to you as the cause of your jealousy. Then, look at your own situation. Instead of competing with the other person in the field of his/her superiority, find a field in yourself, where you would be superior to him/her and project this field of yours to the society to prove your worth better than the other person.

This way, you would easily become superior to him in your own field without disturbing his/her superiority in his/her own field. For each of us, there is always a field where one can be superior to others.
