Teen Tuesday - Fat Cat

Her idea - live the diet and lifestyle of early humans. That means no processed food, no electronics, no makeup or hair care products, and no rides to school!

Catherine hopes a nice side benefit of the project will be to lose some unwanted pounds!

Going without processed food, technology and motorized transportation isn't easy, but Cat learns much about herself as she observes changes in her body, while noting how others - mainly boys - react to her metamorphosis.

Thunder Dog

Well, the title Thunder Dog could make you think of a comic book hero.

But in this case, Thunder Dog, is the story of a real life hero - a guide dog named Roselle. The story starts with Roselle waking up and being afraid of the noise from a thunderstorm. She is so afraid that her owner Michael Hingson, has to get out of bed in the middle of the night and go with the dog into the basement so she will feel more comforted. Michael is worried that he won't be getting enough sleep, because he has a big day at the office tomorrow, with an important meeting to be at bright and early! Little does he know how his day will turn out.

The next day is September 11, 2001. It will not be the day that Michael Hingson was planning on. Michael reports to work with Roselle, his guide dog for the blind. Michael's office is on the 78th floor of Tower One of the World Trade Center.

After the first hijacked jetliner hits the Tower, Michael, Roselle, and his office mates begin the long walk down 78 flights of stairs. They are actually unaware that a plane has hit the building. All they know is that there was a huge sound of explosion and the building tilted and swayed as if it was in an earthquake.

The story of their walk down the many stairs, their meeting with firefighters on the way up the stairs, and the help and togetherness that all the evacuees shared is an engrossing story.

Teen Tuesday - iBoy

iBoy by Kevin Brooks is both an amazing romance and an adventure story rolled into one. Both guys and girls will enjoy this unusual story.

Tom Harvey, just an average teenager, was walking to visit his friend Lucy, when he hears his name called. Looking up to a high-rise apartment building, Tom is hit in the head by an iPhone. Fragments of a shattered iPhone are embedded in his skull, and he awakes in the hospital after 17 days in a coma.

Aside from his injury, Tom awakens to the news that the friend he was on his way to visit was raped that same day. Gang activity in their neighborhood will keep anyone from coming forward and sharing any details about the crime. Lucy's attackers will probably go unpunished. How will Tom approach Lucy after this horrible event ?

Tom begins to realize that perhaps the doctors were not able to remove all of the phone pieces. His brain seems to have melded with the fragments, turning itself into an amazing search engine. All of the information available on the web and through cell phones, seems to also be available to Tom - just by thinking about it.

Tom begins to see that he may be able to avenge Lucy by gathering information from his head. Her attackers will never know where the information is coming from!

The New, New Rules

The subtitle of this book really says it all! (See the picture to the left). This laugh out loud collection of essays and anecdotes has something to offend almost everyone! And when I say offend, I mean that in a good way!

The points that Maher makes are good to make us stop and think - perhaps in a comical way, perhaps in a "why don't we do something about that" way.

Enjoy this fast read!

Fifteen year old Carly has returned from a summer away at a work camp, filled with a passion for the outdoors, and a passion for being real. Real about what you think, real about the clothes you wear, and real about the things that matter.

It shouldn't matter that her little sister Anna has matured quite a bit over the summer. In fact, Carly should be happy for Anna. As they start the new school year, Anna starts to turn heads and receive more attention from boys than a freshman is ready to handle. Carly, her older and wiser sister, should be able to help her out.

But is Carly too jealous to help her sister?

Another Piece of my Heart

Jane Green's newest novel is a slight departure from her more familiar light-hearted romantic comedy titles. Another Piece of my Heart examines family and the definition of motherhood with some very likable characters.

Andi has finally found the man of her dreams at the age of 37. Ethan, divorced with partial custody of two young daughters, couldn't be more perfect. Andi is thrilled to have a loving husband, and a ready made family of two daughters is even better! 8 year old Sophie is ready and willing to accept Andi as her stepmom, while teen-aged Emily is a tougher case. Emily hates Andi, or at least hates the fact that Andi is the living evidence that her biological parents are no longer together. Add to that the fact that Emily is a normal teenager, and you get the idea that Emily makes nothing easy for Andi.

While struggling to create a happy blended family, Andi still hopes to someday have children of her own. But month after month, her hopes are smashed. Stress with Emily's rebellions lead Andi to wonder if it is all just "not worth it".

Finally, the straw that may break the camel's back, Emily is pregnant. Will she keep the child or allow the baby to be adopted? Could this finally be the child that Andi has hoped for? Does Ethan share Andi's hope for another child - after all, he has already gone through this process.

Teen Tuesday - Fracture

The frigid temperatures probably saved her life. Delaney wakes from a coma, as the doctors and medical students are discussing her case in the hospital.

But her survival has come with a price: she now has the ability to sense when another person is near death. She is drawn to Troy Varga, another accident survivor, who has her same ability, but while he tries to shorten the suffering of the dying and help them towards death, Delaney is determined to save them.

Added to the mix is Decker, Hazel's best friend. Decker saved her from the icy water of the pond, and has been at the hospital through the long week of Delaney's coma. Will Decker become more than a friend? Will Troy convince Delaney that his way is right?

John Green has another winner in his newest novel, The Fault in Our Stars.

Hazel has suffered from cancer for many years, and was quite near death at one point in time. Her life has been extended through the use of an experimental drug, and she is going to class at the local community college. Her small world revolves around her parents, her college class, and the Cancer Kid Support Group. I like Hazel - she is tough, funny, and good at not feeling sorry for herself. Hazel knows she is dying; it's just a matter of when.

There's a new kid, a guest, at the Cancer support group one evening. Isaac has brought a friend, Augustus Waters, known as Gus. Gus is a heartthrob, a cute hot guy that Hazel is determined not to like. Hazel describes herself as a grenade - she is bound to hurt anyone who gets too close to her.

Hazel and Gus fall in like, have an adventure, and then fall in love. Sometimes true love can fix any number of problems , and sometimes not.

When She Woke

Newish author Hillary Jordan should have another best seller on her hands with her current novel, When She Woke.

In a not-too-distant future America, Hannah Payne's abortion leads her to be convicted of murder. Her sentence - to be Chromed.

Chroming is the process of genetically manipulating the skin color to brand criminals for their crimes.

Hannah awakes with a red color to her skin. Less expensive than prison care, chroming warns people about Hannah and her crime, and ensures that she will be excluded from any contact with friends and family. Hannah's refusal to name the father of her child leads to even more ostracism.

This was a gripping story, somewhat reminiscent of The Scarlet Letter, but with a Dystopian future that is a story all on its own.

The Journal of Best Practices

Marriage can be difficult enough, but when one of the partners suffers from (previously) undiagnosed Asperger's Syndrome, the difficulties can become almost insurmountable.

In The Journal of Best Practices, by David Finch, the author tells his story.
Five years after David marries Kristen, the love of his life, they learn that he has Asperger Syndrome. The diagnosis explains David's long list of quirks, his social difficulties, and his inflexibility. In many cases, David's behavior mimics his toddlers in the midst of a meltdown!

David is determined to change and improve, and does this through excessive note-taking. The note-taking eventually evolves into The Journal of Best Practices. David has taken some business savvy and applied it to his marriage - or at least he tries!

Some of the notes seem simple. "Don't change the radio station when she's singing along" may seem obvious to many of us, but not to someone who lacks empathy - a common trait of those suffering with Asperger's.

Author Dave Barry praises this book with the quote: "His often hilarious efforts to understand and cope with his condition will resonate with every guy whose wife has ever asked him, 'What the hell were you thinking?' "

This was an enjoyable read that also provided a lot of insight into an often misunderstood condition.

Teen Tuesday - It's a Mall World After All

Charlotte works at the mall, a job which allows her to observe a lot of people as they go about their daily business. Why do skinny people work at Cinnabon? There are some people that she sees every day - don't they have homework to do?

Charlotte is doing her sample perfume spritzing on one particular day when she sees two guys from her school - Bryant and Colton. They take a seat on the bench by the mall fountain, within easy sight of Charlotte. After a few moments, they are joined by two unknown girls - blond, pretty, and with great accessories! The four teens are talking and flirting, and soon walk off paired up two by two.

What's the big deal? Well the big deal is that Bryant is supposedly the boyfriend of Charlotte's best friend Brianna! Has he forgotten that he has a girlfriend waiting for him at school?

Charlotte does what she thinks is the right thing, and tells Brianna what she's seen. But the story backfires on Charlotte as she is accused of making up stories because of jealousy!

Will Brianna eventually believe Charlotte? Will Colton continue to cover for Bryant? Will Bryant get what he deserves for being a two-timer?

A Perfect Blood

Fans of witch turned demon, Rachel Morgan, will not be disappointed in the newest entry to this series. A Perfect Blood brings Rachel the demon/witch, Jinks the Pixie, and Ivy the vampire back into their crime solving business.

Ritually murdered corpses are being found across Cleveland, and the I.S. and the FIB are both stumped. Its always an easy solution to blame the killings on a demon, but this time the killers appear to be human.

These novels are a mix of mystery, suspense, and humor. Enjoy!

Ken Keseys One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, the classic novel inspired by the author's own observations of mental ward patients, was first published on February 1, 1962. Fifty years later, the issues presented in the book have proven timeless. Set in an Oregon asylum, it tells the story of Randle Patrick McMurphy, sent to the ward in lieu of prison camp, who rallies the other patients and rattles those in charge. The book did plenty of rattling back in 1962, when it became a defining text in the 1960s rebellion against authority. An anniversary edition of Kesey's novel has been released, but the best way to honor One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is simply by rereading it, or reading it for the first time if you've only seen the movie.
