To designate or set to serve a specific purpose (To assign), design is a better version of its own aspect which serves the society at maximum efficiency. Designs made our life easier over a period of time, design is systematically planned input to get as close as to the desired output. Getting the desired output essentially mean that it is an ideal design, and humans have worked 8000 years to acquire that idealness.

Design is a graph of inputs and outputs of different levels of social indices. Predicting the graph beforehand is a factor of success behind the design thinking. This seems invalid on a small scale, but on a larger social scale it is an essential to predict the outputs. Design thinking is applied by the people who are trying to solve a social issue or sell a product or create something new in the market. The market is decided upon the type of project, in architecture the market is the users and its surroundings. Larger the market, complex the design thinking would be. If a project is done without considering the users, most of the part of the design becomes invalid and only nonliving part is remaining to be designed.

Design thinking majorly depends upon two facts, designer’s mind and the society. Society impairs the design thinking if not studied properly. Designer’s behavior and attitude decide the design thinking and its impact. Conditional working and situational responses are the major factors in design thinking as it requires the steady mind and conscious sensible behavior of the designer.

Design thinking is also important in daily life to acquire the state of mind to tackle the problems fairly in relation to the society. The routine of the designer is the driving force for him to go through the journey of ideal designs. The continuous process of positivedesign thinking and positive design approach make a designer to follow an ideal path towards design. It creates empathy for our self and help in understanding the design and people from inside. Empathetic design thinking is also important in some cases to emotionally solve the problem to connect it better to society.

Daily one hour of positive thinking towards design process would dramatically increase the chances of being a good designer. For the designer daily Design thinking routine is more important than his daily routine. Design a game of gamblers, they risk their thoughts on society. One who learns the gambling in social dimension, is the one who can lead the idealness more accurately. This gambling needs the great skills of observation, cognition, analysis and tactics. In the competitive world of gamblers to be a good gambler three O’s are important:

OUTWIT

Deceive by greater ingenuity, to learn from people's mistakes and come up with the new idea that will beat the race of humans and compete with the environment.

OUTPLAY

Play better than the opponent (nature). Playing better than the opponent is only possible if we study and practice opponent.

OUTLAST

Sustain or last longer in the process. Playing extraordinary is ok, but maintaining the performance is most important in the game of design.

The designer is an important factor of society, so the responsibility of the designer. Maintaing the relations with the environment is the duty of a designer. Understanding the responsibility and acting accordingly is the need for a better future. The earth is a great teacher, all it needs is a great student!

The most talked thing in designing-world is concept. Concept could be considered as most diverse aspect in designing, as every designer has their own definition about the concept.

What is the concrete definition of concept? What is the ideal definition of concept?

What should represent the concept?

The concept is like a wine, it gets better as it gets older. It is consistently referred to an ideology behind the design, but the fact is that, ‘it is a user who proves the ideology to be correct’ and that is the key point behind every successful design. Theoretically, concepts are defined as an abstract idea or general notions that occurs in the mind, the concept is way beyond individual's perception. It is visible through every social dimension and every possible way. The concept challenges the cognitive ability of an individual and demands analytical mind to imagine beyond the applications. It delivers lots of applications in architectural designing, concept not only forms a foundation for the design but in addition gives significant meaning to the building.

The concept is directly proportional to the desired output. Execution of the concept is majorly in relation with the user experience. Philosophically concept is defined as, it is a reverse process of identifying the reasons for the positive or negative experience of a user through a built space. The concept defines the quality of a space, so it is important to think of any concept considering the users at the top priority.

Ideally a concept is related to the users mind, and mind is known as consciousness in architecture. So we can relate a concept and consciousness of a user to dive into the analysis of the concept. User comfort is an ultimate aim for any architect, comfort is related to the chemical in body called DOPAMINE. It is the feel good neurotransmitter in the human brain, which is the reason for our anticipation of pleasure, increases the drive for doing something, it controls the movement, it awakens the consciousness, and it processes the pain in human’s body. Examining the human brain’s working can assist us to the ideal conceptual definition.

Further, the dopamine designing could open up into the new dimension where the definition of a concept would be an ideal definition. Dopamine designing is necessity of today’s world. This designs could give us more efficient ways of designing. Adding on, combination of science with dopamine designing could be a revolution in today’s crises.

It's a never ending process of building

Today we study architecture, but when did it start back then? Who was the first architect? What did he design first? Imhotep, who lived around 2600 BCE and served the Egyptian Pharaoh Djoser, as the first identified architect in history. He designed first Egyptian pyramid complex, the world's first known extensive stone structure, inspired the later more extravagant pyramids. Is it?

The first architect ever known to humankind dates back to 4.5 billion years, the greatest architect of all time. It worked along one principle and evolved over a million years, BALANCE between all the elements and energies. Over the years, it learned to adopt surrounding conditions and maintain balanced relation among all of them. Created spectacular structures which are out of range for human kind. From the Mariana trench to the Everest lies the creations of greatest architect, master of every aspect it carries. THE EARTH (nature).

First human appeared on earth 66 million years ago, while the anatomically modern humans appeared 8000 years ago and started making unbalanced elements from balanced once i.e. concrete, plastic. This interference in extremely balanced process of nature steered us where we are standing now. Even though we have mastered many things, we lags in very important rule of balance, efficiency and sustainability. Architecture gave new dimension to the human life, but on the graph of efficiency vs time period we are way beyond the nature. Each Step taken by early humans impacted the society very much. It took earth 4.5 billion years to evolve, humans made a significant impact on nature in very short period of time. Humans impacted on the environment in several ways, some are overpopulation, pollution, burning fossil fuels, and deforestation. Changes like these have triggered climate change, soil erosion, poor air quality, and undrinkable water.

Major part affecting the environment is construction. We have excelled in many construction techniques, but why can’t a human see the drawbacks at the same time? WE are pushing ourselves into the locus of compulsions. Buildings account for around 35% of resources, 40% of energy use, consume 12% of the world’s drinkable water and produce almost 40% of global carbon emissions. It is a fact of realization that we should take some serious steps toward global issue. We have experienced during a world pandemic situation, how nature heals with only small relief from human interaction.

Humans are excellent observers and learners, ability to process information stands out the humans from rest. Humans have developed such a methods that earth took many years to create. Humans are best in creating and worst is destroying. We are in the era, where we require severe actions on the issues of tomorrow. It is the time to observe right things and take actions accordingly. It is the responsibility of every designer/architect to work on efficiency as major concern. The design process should start with the concern of efficiency, sustainability and balance.

Here is the method that every designer should take in account while designing:

OBSERVE- Observe that feelings of site

INDENTIFY- Get to know its feelings

IMPROVE- Try to improve their condition

RESOLVE- Solve the unknown

SUSTAIN- Sustain it through lows and highs

Architecture is not about building, it’s about your responsibility towards the society, it’s your gratitude towards the earth, it’s your duty towards future.

OBSERVE

Context is very important aspect of any project, retaining the goods and improving the odds is the duty of designer. Context should not be limited to the site only, but how the surrounding would be impacted by the design is also needed to take in account. Todays practices are limited to, how the context is used to make design batter. The fact is, design can be replicated anywhere, but the context is unique for each location. Contextualization is very important in design. Context is the joining line between design and nature.

IDENTIFY

After observing the context, identify the problem on site or off site related to human interference and try to address it through design positively. It need not to be the visible problem only, but the psychological problems could also be addressed. Main moto behind making out the problem is to take the design as near to the nature.

IMPROVE

Identified problem needs to be improved other than architectural design. Making environment better is the foremost duty of an architect, as we design for better conditions inside the building, outside environment is also important to make design better to great.

RESOLVE

Take one issue on a larger scale, maybe related to materials or living conditions, and try to improve the conditions on that level. This practice will lead us to a better future where we will be out of compulsive orders.

SUSTAIN

Identification to execution is ok for one project, but sustaining the process is important to think of a better tomorrow. If we are creating one green building in 1000 buildings the impact of the green building is negligible, so sustaining the process and method is crucial if we think on larger scale.

Architects are blessed with a natural power to serve a society and nature. Using the powers on the correct path and serve the future with maximum efficiency and consciousness is the duty of an architect. No one can predict the future, but architects can design the future.

Design is an art of making nothing!

“The modern art of making nothing out of everything is an architectural design”. A space making process which suites the user most efficiently and marks a tangible impact on users and society. On fundamental level it deals with dividing the area to achieve certain requirements, following certain rules and regulations. The design process is not a linear path, it is an art of intersecting various aspects while staying on a balanced path to avoid an unbalanced outcome. Various aspects and assets are to be assessed first and then finding an intersection between every asset, which ultimately steer us to an efficient pathway of designing.

Firstly the design should follow an uncertain path, then follows a certain and focused path. Designing demands command over various aspects which is to be used while designing. Designing includes majorly 5 major parts:

It evolved to nurture babies outside of the womb, as our upright position forced babies to be born before full gestation. Babies continue to develop through skin to skin contact with their mothers. Without this babies fail to thrive and suffer irreparable physical and psychological damage, and sometimes death.' said mette aamodt.

DESIGNING WITH EMPATHY

Now, we will take a look at each of the 5 key parts briefly to understand its position and importance in architecture design.

1. EMPATHY

Understanding the user/client with requirements, emotions and need. This user centric approach is the most important step in architecture design. According to Juhani Pallasmaa, empathy in architecture is when “The designer places him/herself in the role of the future dweller and tests the validity of the ideas through this imaginative exchange of roles and personalities.”

Empathy requires conscious mind and awareness of the designer. Understanding the user/client is one step in empathy, analyzing, and studying the requirements takes up the major part. Analysis challenges the cognitive power of the designer and makes a huge impact on design. It includes, making out the important problems in relation to user and society. Proper problems are to be identified to deliver an exceptional design.

Talking to the client is the best thing in the world.

Empathy also includes the major part of architectural research on the requirements, problems and solutions related to the project. Research is majorly done in two parts,

ON SITE RESEARCH

Include the study of contours, climate, surroundings, drawbacks, strong points, services, access, measurement and site conditions. Also called as ‘SITE ANALYSIS’, keen observations are the key point to reduce the chances of a design from bouncing back. The designer should keep in mind that 'Reading between the lines and making more than just lines' is important while creating an impact-full design.

OFF-SITE RESEARCH

It includes the study of observations came through on site research. Studying the different assets required for design and finding the interconnections of that asset. Analyzing the project type and understanding the existing designs, i.e. Case studies. Off-site research plays important role in the next part of architecture design.

Empathy is very important to make user-centric design which will perform greatly in post occupancy evaluation (POE). The building is in a continuous process of organic evolution even after is constructed.
Empathy mainly includes the scratch designs and sketch to start off with the problem.

2. DEFINITION

After perceiving the user/client from their perspective, from their shoe the very next important step is defining the problem carried from empathy. It is said that, “Answering to a wrong question is more dangerous than answering a wrong answer.” As a designer one need to validate the questions and start defining each and every aspect.

Assessing all the factors and defining all the assets are an invariable step in architecture design. Definition process is done in three parts:

Problem identification
It is a process of creating valid questions which are to be answered in further steps of designing. Proper problems identification makes design lot easier as it gives some hints in designing.
Problem analysis
Identified questions are to be carefully analyzed for its validation, solution and their major impact.
Problem definition
Identified analyzed problems are precisely defined as a firm statement which develops the core of the design.

'Definition' is the salient feature of architecture design, which reflects the designer and his attitude towards design. Defining every problem carefully and responsibly is crucial for the designer and the society.
It commonly includes the analytic study, area programs, final requirements and initial solutions.

3. IDEOLOGY

In simple words, it is the way to put in all the aspects noted before in Empathy and Definition. The actual designing process starts from an ideology and end with an ideology. It is the backbone of the whole design. Understanding the term ideology is very important, Ideology is IDEAL+LOGIC w.r.t. All the parts of architecture design.

Ideally, it is to be applied everywhere in design, but mainly it is perceived as a concept.

Psychological considerations

How the user going to experience is important to specifically define beforehand to ensure the efficient working of the design. The study of consciousness plays a major part in psychological considerations.

Contextualization

How the site is considered to design certain typology is also an important part in efficiency of design w.r.t. Surroundings. Design without context is like a body without a heart.

Conceptualization

Having an answer to the question WHY? For every part of the design falls under conceptualization. Essentially, it is the reason for every action taken during designing.

Ideology is considered as a supreme quality that a designer should have, it is purely based on experiences and cognitive power of the designer. It is the perception of the designer towards the environment and society. Sometimes design may fail, but the 'IDEOLOGY' never fails.

4. PROTOTYPING

A prototype is an early sample, model, or release of a product built to test a concept or process.

The art of putting all the elements or aspects together to form a balanced intersected figurative which represent the best combination of all the assets together, while keeping all the elements connected.

Prototyping is an important step to dive into actual physical design, while creating the prototype principle points to be considered are:

Dimension

The building is beyond 3-dimensions, after the 3rd dimension real work of being the designer starts. The Designer should know every dimension of building that it’s going to impact on society.

Reaction

User experience is foremost part in architecture design, considering the users and their experience, are playing an important role in prototyping. Reaction is the result of consciousness, that designer needs to understand very deeply.

Scale

The scale of the prototype decides the behavior of the user through the spaces. Scale decides the consciousness factor. Consciousness is followed by reaction and is reflected in its dimension.

Long-term effects

After being constructed it is still in the process of being building which decides its long-term effects on the society/user.

Context

Design should be rooted into the context in order to work in any conditions for a particular context. Considering context drives us to one step closer to a great design.

Efficiency

Nature tops in efficiency to efficiently design would mean in fewer resources, creating a design which is most impact-full under particular circumstances.

Prototyping essentially does mean, an option of combination of all the elements that come out of previous studies. More the options, more combinations are needed to be analyzed and ultimately it leads us to the most interesting and feasible option.

It mainly includes all conceptual drawings showing the whole idea of design. Conceptual modelling is also a part of prototyping.

5. EXECUTION

It is the most crucial part of any design process to be validated by the user/client, but it is the curtain raiser that how the designer and the client would think of any idea. Analyzing the execution actually pushes the designer out of comfort of being designer. This may lead designer to prototyping the design again, if taken positively it helps the designer in understanding the human even better.

After the approval neat planning for execution on paper and on site is important. It mainly comprises of final drawings and technical drawings. It includes many details that one needs to understand about joineries, materials, construction techniques, technical information etc.

All the processes are defined on personal experiences and perception, it may change person to person as of their thinking, but the main idea would remain same. Someone can define their own design process, but the efficiency is the ultimate key point in the design of any structure.

CONCLUSION

Designing is not hard, we make it. Design process evolves as required by the recent times. Every design process if studied carefully one can notice very similarities between all. All the processes revolve around one factor, USER!

It was no where for the comfort of user at the very initial stage of architecture, so when did this change came is is interesting to study. Everyone should understand that Design is not just about lines, but there lies our future.

It is great if you understand consciousness

Deep down in history, the basic aim for the communities was to save the community from invaders and make life easier, is it the same in recent time? As life moved ahead, meaning of community changed. We are concentrating to very nuclear communities, because the ability of a person to choose and criticize has improved over a period of time. Today everyone has their opinions, solutions and answer to every question/situation. This individual Activeness towards society led us to the prison of mind and this prison is called as consciousness of understanding the surrounding.

Consciousness is action and reaction process, in which we experience something and we react to it according to our perception and cognition. Reaction is the result of individual's perception, cognition, attention, emotion, intelligence, subjective experience, brain functioning and personality. If we go in depth of every aspect again we could end up in the prison.

Though we stand supreme in consciousness ladder, are the most vulnerable to the risk. Consciousness ladder is “Each organism on this planet have some level of understanding and reactions to its surroundings, and if these levels are mapped on a graph we find humans at the top.” This ladder is inversely proportional to the efficiency, in which nature tops the position. If we study consciousness carefully, a complex human can be interpreted through simple architecture.

Emotions are fundamental!

Consciousness can be the cause to the stimulation of feelings and assessment i.e. Thoughts. If moving through a designed space, it stimulates feelings and thoughts in the user then that space is said to be having some transitional value (TV). Transitional value is the combination of transitional feeling index (TFI) and transitional thought index (TTI). TFI and TTI are both subjective components based upon user experience and social validation. To understand TFI and TTI, we need to realize the territory of our mind:

1) External consciousness- It is the instant reactive responsive system (IRRS) responsible for this type of consciousness

2) Internal consciousness- It is the fractional responsive system (FSS) responsible for this type of consciousness.

Being aware of surroundings by critical thoughts is in disfavor of an architect, as it involves critics and cognition of the user. On the other hand being aware of surroundings by FSS is in favor of an architect, as it does no bias the original meaning. In a standard situation, emotions are primary over thoughts. For ex. If a small baby is being put into a situation, what would be the scenario, what would baby experience first? If we understand this phenomenon carefully, we can understand the transitional value (TV), enhancing the user experience.

If we think humanity as a whole, feelings are one of the aspect which are in the same basket for most of the people. So simplifying the steps of human behavior towards surroundings, we can make out some general points for most of the people which is the key point for GLOBAL PSYCHOLOGY. Studying global psychology, heads us to the future where we need fewer solutions for a significant number of problems, there we can start competing with nature in efficiency.

Architecturally TRANSITIONAL VALUE of a space is as important as its design. A space with less TV would fail in post occupancy evaluation, and leads to a whole lot of problems. Consciousness and TV runs parallel and have lots of connecting sleepers which represent the different aspects. To design a space, efficient psychology of human behavior is an important part in achieving desired goals.

Designing is not hard, we make it!

It is a fact that everyone is a designer. Essentially a designer does not mean to design something, but it does mean that you are the one who make designer a designer by designing a society after being designed by a designer. It’s always been a topic of fascination that how a designer’s products shall work in society after a certain period of time. In most of the regions designing is taken granted as a means of earning, resulting in the concrete jungles.

Design is not a design, it is the way of living!

Being a designer, you should know and understand some things-

1) Keeping mind ready:

We don’t know when we encounter any problem, so to be ready at any point of time and keeping your mind creative is the foremost part. Keeping mind creative does mean that thinking expressively and resourcefully in every aspect. Being a good critic as said in ‘Designer being critic’ is equally important to keep the mind physically and mentally healthy. We know that the mind controls the body, but what if we dominate the mind and execute the decisions?

2) Ensuring the outcomes:

We should be capable to understand our design well that the designer can guess the outcomes of design after being executed. It does not mean predicting the things randomly, but exploring the design thoroughly and calculating firm outcomes. Knowing the possible outcomes are not easy in any way, it needs ready mind and excellent observations.

3) Creative stress:

Always being in creative stress gives mind a good exercise to work in crucial moments. Stress is everywhere, but to find a healthy outcome from that stress leads you to the creative stress. Designers will face challenges, so the designer needs to be ready at any point of time, even if it is in dreams. Creative stress is good for health if taken positively.

4) Being jealous of great works:

Controlled jealousy is good for your successful designs. Jealousy develops passion and passion drives through the situation, but understanding the fallbacks of jealousy is also important that it effects on design very badly. Jealousy is a thing that decides your final outcome as a designer.

5) Narrative and stories

You are the narrator of immense responsibility so making stories are fundamental on first hand to be understood by the user as well. As said by Travis dykes ‘as you grow, stories will become fundamental in your designs.’ So narration is the important part as designer to understand.

6) Continuously learning:

This process doesn’t score any grades, any direction, but you are the one who is forging that path for others to follow. The learning process is endless unless and until we stop learning and accepting. Society is the supreme professor that grades our design so be considerate.

7) Be a human:

It is the greatest power we have got, to sustain for a longer period of time at top position is now a necessity. Humanity teaches us lot many things, but can we learn humanity from another organism? This question opens up in the lot may dimensions, but important one is 'even if we learn how it is applicable in a designer's life?'

Criticism is expressed to represent a profession of analyzing and assessing the merits and faults of a literary or creative work, is it really! Apart from the profession how is it perceived in day to day life of a designer, how it could affect designer’s life, how it could affect designing process?

Criticism lies within you

As a human being, the greatest power we have got over any other organism is the ‘Power to Choose’. Many theories are there on science behind choosing, but the fundamental meaning of choosing mean, criticizing between someone or something and relatively go for the best one, But if it is seen from the eyes of the designer it could be a reason for many chronic problems. Sometimes critics results in compromising many things. On the other hand criticism represent a field of extensive studies and research, but fundamentally it inherits within as a unique behavior of every individual. It refers to a whole new dimension and needs to be controlled as of situations, if not it results in the formation of designs which are self-concerned, soul-stirring and which is also dangerous for the society.

Society forms a vital part of most of the studies, definition of society changes from person to person and depends on which domain it is considered. In designer domain, ideally society should be considered from the micro level to as large as we can think of feasibly. It means designer needs to understand the micro, meso, micro and global levels of society. Micro level structures the most significant part of society in which we human mostly interact. To be a competent critic, societal studies become imperative and demands active control over emotions and thoughts. Being a critic does not mean finding only faults, but also to find the merits in proper segments that will help in elevating designs from good to great, and will interact anti-verbally with society.

As society is moving ahead in time, we are excelling in many fields, but lacking in fundamentals, as people are becoming nuclear and self-centered we are falling short in mutual understanding on a bigger scale. Fundamental issues regarding societal understanding are very much neglected in front of more crucial political and non-architectural issues, but the fact that we are leading towards the critical modern world can’t be denied. Apart from psychological understanding about surroundings, it is essential to understand the surrounding from within us. As said, we owe nothing from society, but the society owes everything from us. So it should be understood and applied to the self, more than anywhere else.

At the present moment, for being a critic, the designer needs to understand, how the criticism works and how it is important in recollecting your experiences and memories. Majorly it depends on the mentality and individual’s problem processing skills (PPS), the mentality is inherited or developed gradually over a period of time and PPS is totally dependent on the individual's understanding and processing. Being a good critical designer means a finding balanced working system between cognition, recognition and rendered output. Harmony with self is the key point for any critical designer, self is your inner consciousness which keeps you reminding about every bit of your memories and experiences on the other hand your inner sub-consciousness makes you to take decisions which are habitually from your reactive experiences and are on winner’s hand.

But the making decisions or opinions are should be from your conscious inner to control your reactive critics and prepare them to be a responsive critic. Therefore, becoming an excellent critic is a necessity of the designer and need of society…

CONSCIOUS MIND and DESIGN

THOUGHT IS A FUNCTION OF EMOTION

As a second supreme, Designer needs to understand the psychological abilities of mind and the power of criticism. His/her control over emotions and thoughts that leads a designer to a state where criticism is in control, thoughts are controlled according to the scenario and emotions are output of response rather than instant reaction.

Designing is not only an output of your 5 year undergraduate program or any part-time course, but it evolves right from your birth to the last sleep you took. Designing imparts huge impact on society that even the architect or designer would not think of. Designing is not a profession but shows your attitude, your concern, your thoughts, your state of mind, your power of being designer towards Unconscious Self-centered Society (USS). To be a designer it takes more than just experience.

What if a saint asked to be a designer, what would be the scenario, what would be his state of mind during designing, what would be his attitude towards society, what would be his concerns and most important what would be his priorities during designing other than fundamentals? Saint is said to be a very virtuous, kind, and patient person, aren’t they should also be the qualities of a designer! The designer is said to be the second supreme who shaped society in its all visible forms and helped in a certain way to reach the place where we are standing now.

The designer is working consciously for an unconscious society to bring up some consciousness, by unconsciously gaining every aspect of the surroundings, and internal mind. Taking over the mind is a step towards a society which will work on Mutual Understanding rather than Language as a tool of communication.

Ideally a designer should be an organism who consciously communicates with society by mutual understanding at its max. Being Designer is a state of mind where you carry all the emotions and consciousness without being critic. The designer’s mind works on three principles while he encounters any situation,

First is an emotion, which has a huge impact on the designer. In an ideal situation, one encounter emotions first and followed by thoughts and critics. To understand the importance of emotions one should be able to control the same, and can be able to understand the origin, formation and the impact of emotions.

Second is Consciousness, understanding and awareness of surroundings, even being unconscious is a sign of the true designer's mind, being said that consciousness is awareness of environment, it’s still unknown where it comes from. So to understand the surrounding/society, one should understand the consciousness and subconsciousness.

Third is the Critic, is the most important part as a designer to understand how we criticize everything and make out the conclusions out of something which is the part of nothing. So being a critic it is duty of a designer to train his/her mind to control Emotions and consciousness to get control over critics.

Humans, being on the top of consciousness ladder, are most vulnerable to risk of downfall with no competitors but the humans themselves. As consciousness increases responsibilities being designer also elevates rapidly. The designer's mind is a transitional index between emotions and thoughts, depends on the control over critics. Designer owes nothing from society, but the society owes everything from the designer that he/she have to bring consciousness to society through mutual understanding.
