A brand we are very fond of in this house is HUGO LOVES TIKI - the graphic funfilled universe created by designer Cheyenne Couch. Her aesthetic includes bold graphics, European language print and unique child-like drawings.

Hugo Loves Tiki is based in Indiana, in the Midwestern United States and began with DIY screen-printed t-shirts that resembled foreign language flash cards. These prints have become part of Cheyenne’s signature style.It is her hope that children who wear these flash card shirts become more interested in other languages and traveling outside of their own country to see how the rest of the world lives.

We also adore the quirky style of Hugo loves Tiki, and the new summer collection is simply to die for. The only thing we could dream about is that the collection came in bigger sizes, for bigger growing kids - but the great thing is that they have the adult collection, featuring styles from xs and up - which is perfect for growing girls.

We have picked our favorites from the collection - trust me you'd be spoiled for choice here.

Summer is getting nearer - all we need in this country is for the sun to come along as well, as it is still a little bit chilly up north, to say the least. But we are still very positive and truly believe the sun will come out to play soon enough.

In the meantime, I have had some fun - with a little help from my tweenies, and we have found some must-have accessories for summertime fun in the sun.

A donut float - I mean what is NOT to love. I only wish I had me one of these when I was small. They are very cool indeed. Donut float.

Simply Hygge Magazine

Today I have launched the first of many free HYGGE magazines I am going to share with you all.

Hygge is a word and concept that means a great deal to me, and most Danes out there, a concept I have grown up with, and one that I love to do with my children.

Hygge is all about living in the moment, being present, finding pleasures and joy from the simpler things in life. Autumn is my favourite season for hygge. It is now we need to get our cozy kit out, stock up on woolly socks, jumpers, cushy throws, and create hygge, warmth and coziness inside.

So here it is my friends - the one and the first free online magazine - all about hygge. Hope you love it as much as I do, and that I can get you as hooked on hygge as I have been for many years. So take a seat in your best hyggelige armchair, with a hot drink and a warm blanket and have a good old read on how you - with a few - but elaborate changes, can bring some much-needed hygge into your own life.

Even though the girls are growing up and are getting bigger, they still have their hearts set on many things from the Ferm Living repertoire. The new Ferm Living AW 2016 collection, have some stunning elements and we have all picked a firm favourite.

Audrey loves the House Wall Storage unit in grey, so she can keep all of her belongings in check.

Holly fell head over heels in love with the Funkis Doll house - a lovely Doll house with a Scandinavian twist.

I am crazy about the kids' aprons -it comes in many different colours, but I adore the grey version.

Cisternerne - the underground caves of Copenhagen

The Cisterns are the long forgotten water reservoirs deep under the streets of Copenhagen, that once upon a time, supplied the Danish capital with drinking water, and could hold as much as 16 million litres of clean water. The Cisterns were supplying Copenhagen for more than 70 years but were finally drained in 1981. In 1996 - where Copenhagen was the European city of culture, - the underground water reservoir was put to use as an exhibition space. The Cisterns are used today to host art exhibitions and other events, where the stunning architecture takes centre stage. The Cisterns are the only dripstone caves in Denmark and they are located in the area of Frederiksberg, under the park 'Søndermarken' directly opposite the Copenhagen Zoo.

I had seen many of my favourite Instagrammers posting stunning pictures from the Cisterns, so I knew I had to 'drag' the girls with me, so we could see it with our own eyes. When you enter the caves, the damp smell, and the humidity hits you as your eyes adjust. The entrance was candlelit, giving the place a stunning but ghostly look. It reminded me of ancient castles and parties from the olden days. The further you got in, the wetter, and darker it became.

The exhibition 'That dream of Peace' was made specifically for The Cisterns by the Artist Eva Koch, and she was inspired by the belief in life and growth, despite the terror, wars and destruction of Today's World. The installation was the perfect fit for The Cisterns, but I will say that if you bring smaller children, the sounds and images can be rather frightening in the dark rooms.

We were there for about 40 minutes. I could probably have spent some more time there taking photos, but the kids wanted daylight and ice-cream. I thoroughly recommend visiting The Cisterns for an interesting insight into the history of Copenhagen, and a look into a stunning Universe underground. I will be back for sure!

Back to school

The kids are returning to school next week - and even though we have enjoyed a lovely long summer holiday, the kids are ready to go back, get a bit of structure into their lives again, hang out with their friends and get back to learning.

One of the things they always look forward to is getting their school bags and pencil-cases stocked so they are ready for set off. This year we have shopped soo much; and have soo many different options available - that if you need to shop for stationary - you have come to the right place! One of the brands I have gone a little bit potty about this season is KIDS ON THE MOON. They have the coolest and cutest SS'16 collection, and also a fab range for women.

I immediately noticed their twilight Tutu and had to have it for the girls - just have a look here and also here. Their summer collection revolves around the sun, and it makes you dream away to white sandy beaches, saltwater in the air, and sunshine in you hair. I adore every single bit of the collection, and my girls are over the moon too :-)

The summer picnic

Every year our extended family meet for the annual summer picnic at the FRILANDS MUSEUM - 'The Open Air Museum', just outside Copenhagen. It is a stunning place, and it feels like you enter a different world of rural architecture, buildings, artifacts and farm animals, which gives you a good get a good insight as to how the Danish people lived more the 100 years ago.

The place is vast, and many people bring a picnic. There is a large cafe area in the middle with benches and a cafe and a place for the little ones to splash around in the small fountain. The whole place oozes HYGGE, so you get a bit of everything if you take the family here. Did I mention that the entrance is free. You can rent small carts (if you come in good time) and even go by horse and carriage around the museum.

I would recommend it for anyone visiting Copenhagen. Happy Monday everyone.

Something for the weekend

Fridays are the most hyggelige days all week in our house. It is the day where most Danish parents rush home from work, so they can pick the kids up early, and come home together. Most of the people I know, all eat dinner together at the dinner table, and it is common practice for the kids to help out preparing the food. We like to get the kids involved.

Friday is also the day for hygge. We all love spending some time together on Fridays, and look forward to the weekend, and most families stock up on tasty and yummy treats.

Today I have chosen to share a dish, that we are all familiar with because most people eat it during the Summer months. To call it a dish is actually not entirely true because there is no cooking involved; I am speaking of the humble 'Strawberries and cream'.

We LOVE Strawberries and cream in this house, and in my family we have a way we always serve it: Fresh, clean Strawberries, lashings of full fat cream, and a rather generous sprinkle of sugar. The simplicity of this dessert is what makes it so perfect.

My Mr. likes to be the odd one out (being British ha ha) - and he likes to add whipped cream or even vanilla ice cream and sometimes syrup. To me it is almost ludicrous, but all to their own :-)

The truth is - sitting in the sunshine, with a bowl of strawberries and cream, almost feels like my childhood, with long summer days, wind in my hair, fun, laughter, and good wholesome food - all in that one little mouthful. Simplicity my friends, is the heart of hygge. Happy weekend everyone. We have a busy weekend ahead and I can't wait to share it all with you soon.

The things that really matter

When I was younger, I had the travelling bug and couldn't get out of here fast enough. I finished school, and off I went to London - and ended up staying for 11 years, travelling all over the world, seeing everything. But every year I also loved coming back home, to the familiarity of everything, and to be with the people I loved the most.

I often received parcels from my mother - with favourite snacks and treats, and it made me happy, but also melancholic at the same time, and made me miss my family at home.
I lived in London for 11 years, and I loved it. The fast pace, and the many exciting things to see and do worked well for me and my outgoing persona.

But things change, and when I became ready to have my own children, I wanted to go home. Home where my heart lived. After being an expat for more than 11 years, it was a bit of a shock to move back to "Little Old Denmark". Everything seemed so provincial, and the Mr. and I had to learn to live in a 'new' country with a brand new baby.

We have been here for more than 10 years now, and to be honest, I don't miss living in London anymore. We go back a lot to see family and friends, and there we get a taste of the life we once had, but a slower, simpler life is what we want now. For ourselves and our daughters.

Copenhagen and Denmark have soo much to offer in terms of the 'great outdoors' sustainable living, and taking care of each other, the animals and the planet. As you know I am a big advocate of the Danish concept of HYGGE, and will try and teach you how small but deliberate changes can make the ordinary simple day pleasures seem extraordinary. I am working very hard on a new project and I can't wait to share it with you. So please watch this space - and take care of each other.

Koldskål - a Danish summer dessert

Today I wanted to share one of the most loved summer desserts from Denmark. It is called Koldskål, and translated it means Coldbowl. I would call it a chilled vanilla milky cold dessert (some people call it soup, but it isn't cooked so I don't :) Koldskål is served chilled, and with small vanilla biscuits. Some people love to smash up their biscuits, whilst others prefer theirs whole.

The concoction is usually a dessert, but on a hot summers day, it is bliss and many Danes will eat this during the hot months instead of dinner. I still remember the evenings where my Mother would get the mixer out and make Koldksål. I loved it, it tasted like summer. It's very easy to make yourself, and we love ours with raspberries as well as Kammerjunker.

INGREDIENTS - KOLDSKÅL

4 Egg yolks

100 g sugar

Buttermilk - 1 l

Vanilla sugar

Organic lemon to taste

METHOD

Get the egg yolks in a bowl and mix it together with the sugar until fluffy and pale yellow. Add vanilla sugar and whisk again.
Slowly pour in the buttermilk into the bowl, and with a spoon, gently stir until the egg mix has dissolved.
If you prefer your Koldskål slightly less sweet, add a bit of organic lemon juice to taste, or even better a bit of the lemon zest
Leave in the fridge and keep cold - it will last for 2 days in the refrigerator.

INGREDIENTS - Twice baked Vanilla biscuits

250 g all purpose flour

2 tsp baking powder

100 g sugar

100 g butter - diced

1/2 cup of milk

1 1/2 tsp vanilla sugar

1 egg

METHOD

In a large bowl, mix with flour, vanilla sugar, baking powder, and sugar. Crumble the butter into the mix and stir to connect. Add the egg and the milk and knead until smooth.
Place the dough in the fridge to chill for 30 mins.
Roll into sausages, and cut into 2 cm balls, leave on the baking tray and flatten slightly with a finger.
Bake on baking paper for 10 minutes at 175 degrees celsius.
Remove from the oven, and leave to cool for a few minutes, and with a serrated knife - cut through the cookie to get 2 halves. Place onto the baking sheet with the cut-side down.
Lower the heat in the oven til 125 degrees and bake for 45 minuttes - or until golden brown.
Leave to cool, and store in an airtight container.
Add your vanilla biscuits to your dish of Koldskål, and ENJOY.

DIY Floral crown

We spent the entire weekend outside, being busy and basking in the sunshine. In a country like Denmark, that has very little sunshine, people literally flock outside as soon as we have a few sun rays, and we all love it. It is hyggeligt. This country is cold for more that 7 months a year, and many people wonder how we get by, but it is the fact that when we have so little of something, we appreciate it soo much more.

Everything is in full bloom now, and being the lucky Mother of 2 girls, I am the happy receiver of many small bouquets on a weekly basis. We also love making florals crowns. Yesterday, we started by making the classic dandelion crown, but I had my eyes on some stunning florals from a bush, and I decided to turn them into a crown. Making a floral crown or even a wreath is actually quite straight forward.

All you need is:

Scissors - that can cut through small branches

Small sharp knife

Flower wire (it is wire, but green, so it is almost invisible in-between thefoliage)

Patience, and a cup of tea.

Method:

Cut some branches of the bush - you need the branches to be quite long as they form the base of the crown.

Starting on one side, take one of the longest branches, and start slowly adding smaller branches so the form a half circle

Tie together with flower wire - I cut about 10 - 20 pieces around 10 cm each and leave to one side.

Keep going until you have most of the branch covered. Do the same for the other side.

Shape the branches into a circle, creating a crown.

I left the 'naked' branches on the back and in the end tied them together forming a circle.

If you see small areas where the crown is uneven, add some more flowers, tied together with flower wire.

Trim the crown, and get rid of any leaves, wire, or flowers sticking out.

My girls love a floral crown. They think it makes them look pretty and romantic. Like they were from the 'olden days' like my youngest said. Happy Monday everyone!!

Springtime in the woods

After a slow start to Spring here in Denmark; the sunshine returned with a vengeance and we have been basking in it for the long weekend. This Thursday, we went on a picnic with our fab friends and their daughters, and we walked through a pale green haven of baby leaves and found a secluded spot for a picnic. It reminded me of my childhood, where we were roaming the fields around our home, until the late evenings, heads tender from the basking sunshine, but happy.

We were out for hours, and walked for more than 15 km, even though it felt like a lot less. The children were tired but content, and we ended the day with ice-cream by the lakeside.

People always wonder what this Hygge thing is, and what the concept entails. That day was the epitome of hygge, because it was all about being togther, being in nature, and enjoying the simplest of things.

The cost was minimal, and we all shared our packed lunches. We all walked away with a sense of freedom, and a feeling of having been away for the day. I think that is what life is all about. Have a wonderful weekend everybody.

We went to Frederiksdal forest, just outside Copenhagen. The area is absolutely stunning, and perfect for a long walk. Do be aware, however, that the terrain is very steep, so you have to hold on to the kids. In Frederiksdal & Nybro you can also rent canoes for the day and sail on Furesøen or Bagsværd sø, something I thoroughly enjoyed doing as a child. Copenhagen and the surrounding areas are perfect for nature walks, horse riding, canoeing and being in nature. Many parks have areas where you can bbq.

May is a month of parties for us. It seems that all of our family birthdays come in clusters and May is one of the busiest months, with more than 5 people celebrating theirs.

My oldest daughter is turning 10 soon, and I cannot stop being a little melancholic about how fast life passes by, blink and you'll miss it, so it's best to hold on and enjoy the ride.

I almost can't fathom she is getting so big now, and clever, and beautiful. She has her own opinions, she knows exactly what she wants to wear, and her wish-list is somewhat grown up. I guess children grow up faster today, with all of the things they see on TV, Youtube, and Instagram, they are bound to be influenced much more than we were.

I have compiled a small wishlist for a tween girl - but quite frankly I'd gladly have some of these myself ;-)

Photography tips and ideas for beginners 1 - Interior

Ever since my parents bought me one of the old flat Kodak cameras from the late 80's, I have been a huge fan of photography and visual art. I photographed everything, and I still remember the anticipation of having to wait for the pictures to be sent away and developed. It was soo exciting picking up the photographs and quickly sifting through to see if there were any good (or perhaps more importantly) bad ones!

My first digital camera was bought when I lived in London, and from that moment onwards I was hooked. I loved the idea of the instant knowledge of having taken a GOD or BAD picture, and the fact that you could almost see what you did wrong.

All of my learning has been trial and error based, and I have made many rookie mistakes ~~(still do)~~ so today I have collected a few tips I wish I had when I started out. As far as I am concerned - it hasn't got much to do with equipment, but it is all about trying until you get it right! I am still not a very technical person, but I always have the whole idea visualized in my head, and then work my way to get there.

TIPS I wish I knew when I started out - Interior photography & styling:

If you can, always shoot your images in RAW not JPG. The picture is 'not developed (like the old days where you had to have them developed at the shop) so you can change many errors in a raw image file. I always work on my photos in Lightroom or Photoshop afterwards, but you can use some of the many free programmes out there. Just remember RAW files will take up a lot of disc space on your computer, so make sure you discard the ones you do not need, and save the good ones to a portable hard-drive, or even iCloud or Dropbox and delete them from your computer.

Always use natural light (the trick is to avoid harsh sunlight, shade is best as it diffuses the light and makes the shadows subdued). So make sure to turn off all the lights, as they may cause a yellowish ghastly tinge. Built in camera flash is also no no - it takes the soul out of the picture I think. Be sure to photograph when there is enough light, otherwise, the image will quickly become grainy. You can always play with the ISO (low in sunshine - higher in shade). If it is very dark - use a tripod.

Move around the room, and have a look at which angle works best. Usually shooting the room/product 'straight on' (you can use the built-in grids in the camera) works best. Sometimes it is advisable to walk out of the door and stand in the hallway so you can get more in the picture. Other times you could stand on a chair, as long as it looks natural and not "birds eye view"!

If you shoot small 'vignettes' then you could take the picture from the top down, it's also good for Instagram. These images are called flatlays, and I will do a post on these soon too.

Clean up, dust, get rid of the remote, give the pillows a little shake, move the unsightly children's toys, put a few flowers in a vase. Think about what you think is beautiful to look at in interior magazines, and do the same at home. The key is to make the room look beautiful but lived-in, so leave some personal items out, to make the place look warm and inviting.

Aperture is important. You see that is the thing that controls what is in focus and what not. If you like a lovely blurry background you need to have the smallest F-stop available. If you want things to be sharp and in Focus - and larger F-stop is required. I have linked to one of my Pinterest boards here that will tell you more about Aperture.

Have fun with it and keep on practicing. Especially if you are styling. Find some inspirational pictures on Pinterest and work towards that, adding your own style as you go along. Practice makes perfect.

Indoor Greenhouse

It appears that Winter has returned with a vengeance here in Denmark; sleet, hailstones and a lot of wind, has forced me to turn the heating back on, and dress the children in their winter woollies again. It is hyggeligt though, which is nice, but I must admit I long for spring, sunny skies, and that warmth in the air.

Today I fell head over heels in love with this little indoor greenhouse from Design House Stockholm. Designed by Atelier 2+. The greenhouse is small enough for indoor use, but big enough to house a miniature garden. I adore this, and this could be the perfect solution for these cold spring days. because if you put your plants outside too early, the frost might kill them. So I have my eyes on this beauty.

Worapong Manupipatpong and Ada Chirakranont originally created the greenhouse for the magazine Wallpaper's annual Handmade exhibition. The Atelier 2+ Greenhouse is made from lacquered solid ash timber with panes of toughened glass and a planting tray made of galvanized metal. Visit their website here - Atelier 2 +

Cherry Blossom on Bispebjerg Kirkegård

Remember this post a few weeks ago when I told you about my tips if you were to go and take some pictures of the coveted Cherry Blossom alley on Bispebjerg Kirkegård.

I have been seeing images on Instagram and Facebook literally filled with people, and even though I tried to go by my own advice and arrive early (.7.30) there were still a lot of people around.

But nevertheless, we managed to get some amazing pictures of the girls. They wanted to wear their favourite dresses, and I let them. It was absolutely freezing, so I applaud them for doing their camera work like mini pros.

I love results, they are whimsical, beautiful and dreamy, anything a Cherry Blossom photoshoot should be. Happy Earth day yesterday.

Remember - as far as we are concerned, the best things in life are free, so pay attention to the small things in life, because - as we know, they might actually be the big things...

I have amazing stuff lined up for you soon, so remember to watch this space - it will be epic :)

Ikea does it again

Here I go again admiring yet another Ikea collection. This time, it is for kids. And this time, I think you might be a bit envious. You see, they have managed to bring their Scandinavian cool vibe right into the kids room. The new FLISAT series, was specifically designed with 3- to 12-year-olds in mind. The whole collection is made of simple pine- wood but also includes colour here and there to make the kids happy.

And as you'd expect from Ikea, the price is right and affordable for everyone. I mean who wouldn't be happy to have the amazing Dollhouse shelf on the wall, the stylish desk, or the cute rack for coats. So I think I am going to Ikea today... What about you? Do you like pinewood for decoration in your home, or do you find it too simplistic and minimal? I think it is the perfect 'blank slate' and with minimal colour on the furniture, you can go mad elsewhere, if that tickles your fancy.

I am still working on finding my blogging DNA again and it is a long ongoing process. I really like researching and picking my own brain, but it is also sometimes difficult sitting here on my own, with all of these ideas flying around in my head, but no-one to confer with.
