Who said belts and hats were the only ways to accessorize? A new piercing can also be a hot commodity. Earrings, either the traditional or gauges or plugs, are a great way to express your individuality and update you style. Plus, if you’re really looking to make a statement, why not make it with a piercing?. Like regular fashion, piercings too range from subtle to extreme, and there’s definitely something out there just for you!

In the past, piercings have been viewed as eccentric and even a little taboo, a definite staple of the subculture. And while they’re still not mainstream, they are currently on the rise again and popping up in interesting and unusual places. Ear lobe piercings are old news. These days people are finding all new nooks and crannies to decorate and accessorize.

Getting “daith,” “rook” and “tragus” piercings is a great way to step outside of the box. All of these can be described as interior piercings, since they are found on the inner parts of the ear. They are all cartilage piercings, which means the actual piercing may be a little more painful and the healing process may take longer.

Nose piercings are also a great way to add a little more to your look. You can get one nostril, two nostrils, your septum, or even your nose bridge pierced. Your septum is the piece of flesh that separates your nostrils. An experienced professional will not pierce the cartilage, which means this piercing is not as painful as it looks or as damaging.

Nose bridges fall into another cool category of corporal decoration or surface piercings. A surface piercing is one that doesn’t go through any specific body part such as an ear or nose. They are piercings in the skin where it lays flat against the body. Surface piercings also include Monroe’s, the back of the neck, chest and arms. Since surface piercings have a high rejection rate, make sure you first seek a certified and experienced professional. You want to seek quality when doing anything that could affect your health.

Katy Perry a True Trendsetter

Lets face it: Katy Perry's fifteen minutes of fame are over. I apologize to any die-hard fans out there, but come on, we all know that her lasting musical legacy will be slightly offensive, slightly exploitative, slightly catchy song that's sure to appear on every "Best of the 00's" nostalgia album. Her make on fashion, however, will survive much longer.

Her look has been described with such contradictory terms as "thrift-store-bombshell," (BLENDER 54), "retro 50's glamour," (SUGARSCAPE), and "Varga Girl meets Joan Jett," (LA TIMES). In truth, it's difficult to pin down Katy Perry's style. While she does mix ideas- retro with modern, highbrow with lowbrow, cheap with chic- she's less like anybody else but, well, Katy Perry.

While we're at it, though, we might as well talk about some of her less obvious influences. Some of her staples, like gigantic, neon-colored boots and exaggerated make-up, are inspired by power metal bands like KISS and Twisted Sister, groups which blurred gender lines the same way Perry seeks to create sexual confusion with "I Kissed a Girl." Similarly, her hot pants and leopard-print skirts are borrowed from androgynous 1970s glam rock transgender trends.
It's Perry's inventive, original clothing choices that really make her stand out. She mixes bold reds, yellows and greens with animal patterns and kitschy, plastic accessories. One can find both Chanel bags and kids' roller skates in her closet, next to such items as a black evening gown and a stitched plaid swimsuit.
The big question is, of course, how can you look like Perry? My advice: look in some less obvious places. Children's clothing stores, garage sales, or your grandmother's attic are great resources for rare, unique and relatively low-cost items. Hold on to everything you find, too; you never know when that over-sized belt could come in handy. Sometimes there's only one white ribbon, jelly bracelet, or watermelon-shaped earring between tacky and Katy Perry perfect.

Have A Blue Crush

I've been told my whole life by fashion mavens that blue eyeshadow is so passe. It died with shoulder pads, 8-tracks and Molly Ringwald's career. I sadly gave up my dream of pretty aquas and turquoises painted on my eyelids, and resigned myself to colors that were “mature” and “appropriate.”

But now I'm ready to smash out of this dull shell! Here are some easy tips for wearing blue eyeshadow day or night without looking like a 6-year-old who got into Mommy's makeup box.

Blending and Placement: To start off for wearing any color eyeshadow, put primer on your eyelids to eliminate fading and smudging after hours of wear. To create one consistent palette, apply one shade of light beige over the eye lid all the way up to the brow bone. This light neutral color is also helpful for blending the blues together. Put the darkest indigo or navy shade as eyeliner closest to the top lash line and also on the crease. Use your brighter color, an iridescent and soft shade with a little metallic tint on yo

ur entire eye area and apply conservatively to the brow bone. Use a blending brush to make the progression of blues look natural without any clear lines of distinction.

Compliment Don't Combat: Keep the rest of your makeup neutral and natural. Skip the blush and lipstick that tend to compete for attention on the face and instead apply a clear lip gloss; it works just as well to accent your features.

How to Work with Hair Color and Skin Tone: Good news tow-headed beauties: you too can work this style. Just stick with blue-green hues and use an espresso-shade of mascara to keep your eyes looking fresh instead of severe with black eyeliner and mascara accents. Brunettes with fair skin look stunning with a more violet-blue shade that has a slight shimmer. Olive skin tones work best with icy blues and redheads look great with blues that have a pearly, creamy finish.

No matter how you decide to wear this taboo shade, you can never go wrong if you just remember to keep it simple and classy.

Do Fashionable Guys Make Good Boyfriends?

Everyday I am surrounded by fashionable guys and it got me thinking, “are these guys boyfriend material?”

From my own experience dating a fashion conscious male, I must admit it was less than a perfect fairytale. When we went out to dinner, he took longer than me to get ready, and don’t even get me started with the shopping. Usually when a guy goes shopping with a girl, they are going for the woman’s enjoyment. Lets just say there was no enjoyment on my end when it came to going on long, expensive shopping outings in stuffy stores I didn’t even like.

My experience prompted me to interview some Emerson women and ask them about there experiences and thoughts on fashionable guys.

I got a variety of responses as I asked questions like “Have you ever gone out with a fashionable guy?” “What do they provide?” and “What turns you away from fashionable guys?” Some women responded that they liked having a good-looking guy wrapped around them; to have a good looking guy next to you was showing the world that you are amazing because you can get very well groomed men to date you, and that you have high standards.

Women also mentioned the spectrum that men fit into when it comes to fashion. There are those who just wear whatever is on the floor of their dirty dorm rooms, and there are those who spend two hours grooming themselves till they are camera ready. Many women prefer a man to be in the middle, meaning, if it is time to go out for a nice dinner, the girl expects her date to dress well out of respect for her.

What can women expect if they are dating a fashion forward guy? Basically, expect conversations to revolve less around you, and more on him. If a man is already concerned about his looks, it is likely that he cares a lot about himself. “They’re a bit pretentious,” said Marie Scarfo.

Men out there that are reading this and thinking I am a total male fashion hater, let me say my peace. I love a man that carries himself well, and that is aware of what he is wearing on his back, but if that is all he cares about, then I get bored. After all, according to Emerson student Emi Saza, “Clothes don’t make the man.”

Fashion may seem somewhat constricted when it comes to men's apparel; pants, shorts, shirts and jackets can only go so far without creating a ridiculous look. It can sometimes be difficult to find an outlet that can give an extra push to the well-dressed male, and for those who are looking for another piece to add to their wardrobe, they only need to look down. Shoes are often avoided or overlooked in male attire; most boys will resort to wearing their favorite pair of sneakers or converse, with the occasional sandal thrown in. An easy and simple way to instantly increase sex appeal, stand out and add a new addition to the male wardrobe is to invest in boots. Boots are a timeless type of footwear that can be seen on famous sex icons such as James Dean, The Beatles, and John Wayne. There are many different options for the boot bound boy, motorcycle, cowboy, and Beatle boots are just some of the great footwear options available to men. For those who shrug away from boots on account of their pricey nature it is important to remember that boots are a great investment that will last. A good pair of boots can stand up to the test of the time much better then a pair of sneakers. Thrift stores also often have great boots for inexpensive prices. Interested? There are some great stores in Boston that will offer several different varieties of the classic shoe; all that is required is a bit of searching. Bring on the boys in boots!

Not Just Newbury: Shops You Should Know

To be completely honest, when I first discovered Bobby From Boston, I didn’t want anyone else to find about it. It even hurts me a little bit writing this now. It’s one of those stores: the kind of store you walk in and wonder, “How did I not know about this place?” A short, ten-minute walk from Emerson, Bobby From Boston can be found at 19 Thayer Street in the South End.

The store’s owner, Bobby Garnett- who is, in fact, originally from Boston- has been in the vintage business for over 23 years. His vintage expertise and collection are frequently called upon by film directors shooting movies set in the past, as well as fashion labels from local designers to Ralph Lauren.

The clothes are gorgeous, in great condition and most items are still affordable, no more than you’d expect at your average department store. But what makes Bobby From Boston so amazing is the store itself. Hardwood floors and cabinets, a pool table and even an old shoe-shining station evoke a rustic, Ivy-league feel. Every nook and cranny has been filled with some sort of antique whether it be stacks of old battered suitcases or glass cases of gleaming pocket watches. Even if you don’t have much to spend, it’s worth a trip just for a look around.

The bottom line: for vintage lovers, Bobby From Boston may as well be Mecca. To everyone else, it’s still a kick-ass store.

Leanne Marshall Breaks Project Runway’s Mold

Project Runway recently concluded it’s fifth season. This was lackluster all around compared to the other seasons, but especially with the designers. I’m not saying that the designers were not talented, they absolutely were. Leanne Marshall was the clear winner. But if the winner of each season were in a competition, Leanne would probably be the first auf’d (eliminated from the competition).

The difference between the seasons is the level of personality and pizzazz. Usually by the middle of the season, I can tell which designer will win or at least who the final three will be. But this time, episodes passed by and I didn’t even notice the shrinking contestant pool. The challenges were unoriginal, the designs fell just short of innovative and it shows how NBC has overtaken Bravo. This season was boring. I wouldn’t be disappointed if this was their last season and that makes me very, very sad.

All Punked Up and Nowhere to Go

A few years ago, I went to see one of my favorite bands play at a club in my home state of Connecticut. As my friend and I pulled into the parking lot, I saw a bunch of kids sitting outside. I complemented them on their hairstyles and band t-shirts as we approached the line. When the show finally started, the kids that I had talked to earlier, took the stage and delivered an energetic performance.

These kids who were my age were members of an increasingly popular band called All Time Low. The band members were the same age as me and reflected a similar ideology: to not take themselves too seriously and to have fun. They have fun, especially, with what they wear and do not care that they may look ridiculous. Pop punk is not just a style of music but also a fashion statement. When a band isn't writing songs about how love stinks or living it up, they are consciously picking clothes that could potentially refine the pop punk scene, from band t-shirts to high top shoes and baseball caps to tight jeans. These clothing accessories are all staples for pop-punk bands that have sprung up within the last few years.

Band members from such bands as All Time Low and The Maine often wear band t-shirts to support the bands that they like. After all, they are fans of the music. The logos on the t-shirts are written in bright colors, which compliment the energetic sound of their music. Many bands mimic retro fashions of the ‘80s with big sweatshirts and high top sneakers.

There are many reasons why pop-punk fashion has taken this fashion turn. The consistent upbeat tone to their music may reflect what they wear. Songs like, "Let It Roll," by All Time Low proclaim, "Let it roll, our time is fleeting so we take control." The band Hit The Lights sings, "And we'll stay out all night, 'cause rest is for the dead," in their song "Stay Out." The music emphasizes living for the moment and enjoying life. Their clothing colors reflect the growing optimism of their music.

The next time someone says that pop-punk music is about how girls are mean, just remember that not only the music but the clothes present a new message: to live life and just have fun.

Renewable Fashion

Sheets of fabric and a needle and thread may bring the image of Project Runway to mind - that is until the letters D.I.Y. come into the picture, then one may be haunted by images of the craft section at Walmart and ugly prints made into ill fitting clothes. It seems that many object to the idea of creating clothes, and would rather run into the nearest Urban or H&M for the next fashionable look. Clothes from these stores may have become staples in our closet collections and may provide all the essentials to dressing well, but they have also taken out some of the creativity and personalized feel of clothing. However, there are still small outlets of uniqueness hidden if you know where to look.

Any avid Urban shopper will be familiar with the concept of renewable fashion. They recently introduced a new collection made up of one-of-a-kind pieces. Each is handcrafted from vintage, deadstock, and surplus materials sourced from rag mills around the world. The idea behind this “green look” is creating new pieces out of old fabrics, something that we can all do ourselves with a little practice.

Mari Santos is an amateur designer that was hoping to be a part of the Urban Renewal Team. She has a web page that shows off her “redesigns” while explaining her approach to urban renewal.

“To me, urban renewal is all about creating a fresh and unique style out of whatever you’re given; taking something old, frumpy and ill fitting and making it into something new.” With big t-shirts as her “old, frumpy and ill fitting” something, she created a series of cute jumpers, dresses, baby doll shirts and purses. Looking at her end products, you would never guess that they were once giant, simple t-shirts.

She uses her excess fabric to makes cloth roses and straps and adds simple extras like buttons and lace to further progress her looks. T-shirt reconstruction is something you may have done at camp, but Santos pushes beyond the cut and tie method and looks at a t-shirt as a canvas of possibilities. While the average person doesn’t necessarily have the skill to come up with the reconstructed looks of Mari Santos, we can use her as a muse for our own hand crafted looks. These interesting, original ideas and designs can do more then add a little extra uniqueness to our lives, they can serve as a reminder that we are allowed to look beyond our “safe” stores and into the world of renewable. It is a step beyond thrift stores that allows us to imagine and create, and who knows, maybe it will even inspire us to make something completely new… like a jumper out of an oversized t-shirt. Dragtoberfest

Fall is the season for bright colors and fanatical costumes. However, this year the exciting costumes were not found on children going door-to-door asking for candy, but on men and women dressed in drag in the Cabaret of the Little Building. There is always something exciting occurring on Emerson’s campus, and this week it was Dragtoberfest. Every year Emerson’s club EAGLE (Emerson’s Alliance of Gays, Lesbians, and Everyone) sponsored the event, which is a competition between students to win the best drag show.

The show opened up with a spectacular lip-synched dance performed by one of the judges, Landa Plenty. The evening’s host, Becca D’Bus, started the competition off with an energized greeting and a wardrobe to match. Her spunky, loud, and fantastic personality excited the crowd for the upcoming performances.

Her outfit changed at least five times and was always as bright and creative as herself. After the opening act, the competition began. Both men and women dressed the part, and the performances ranged widely from Aretha Franklin to R. Kelly. Each group was themed differently depending on their music choice, and by the end of the night it was hard to tell who were men and who were women. In fact, one group had a woman dressed as a man, pretending to be a woman. Follow?

Throughout the night, the audience showed no favoritism and cheered loudly every time a new act appeared on stage. By the end of the evening, no one knew who would win but, after the judges’ decision, the audience seemed pleased. It was clear that everyone was there to have fun and after all, as clichÈ as it may sound, in Dragtoberfest, every drag is a winner.

This season, leather is no longer just another accessory, it’s a staple. Leather jackets are everywhere you turn, and whether you decide to go real or faux, short or long, you can’t miss the mark. Overall, the looks range from classy to edgy, but the most popular style, the “Bomber,” falls somewhere in between.

In recent years, the Edge has become more preferable. Looking tough implies boldness and assertiveness. When you want to stand out, the last thing you need lacking is confidence; you will just end up looking like you tried too hard. Leather jackets are a good way to abandon the ordinary.

The great thing is that they are available in a multitude of styles and colors, with prices to fit every budget. When selecting your leather jacket, first decide if you are going faux or looking for real leather. That will give you a perspective on price range and locations to shop. Second, know the look you want. The Bomber style keeps things casual, trendy, and comfortable. The motorcycle style is edgier, and a little more chic than the Bomber because the lines are cleaner, and it creates less bulk.

If you choose faux-leather, you can expect it to be less expensive than a real leather jacket. H&M offers a Bomber style in three different shades for only $49. If you choose to go with real leather, expect to pay at least $300 (especially if you are not shopping sale or thrift). A cute hooded Motorcycle style is available at Adriano Goldschmied (AG Jeans) on Newbury Street; the cost is around $700.

Fortunately for all of us college students, Urban Outfitters offers the option of leather or faux in both Motorcycle and Bomber styles, in an affordable price range for the student budget. Regardless, if you are looking for a fashionable, reliable Fall jacket, take leather as a suggestion. Don’t miss out on this cool trend!

Monopolies Cause Repeats in Fashion Capitals

There are many fashion capitals in this world, but if you have seen one, then you have seen them all. The original capitals include Paris, London, Milan, and New York City. Now there are about 30 other capitals including but not limited to Tokyo, Beijing, Prague, Melbourne, Beunos Aires, and many more in very different locations. Due to the current cost of airfare, you might not be able to travel to the more distant locations anytime soon, but be assured that you are not missing much.

Big designers and high fashion companies belong to large conglomerate companies. These large companies are therefore monopolizing the fashion industry globally. Companies like Pinault-Printemps-Redoute (PPR) own large names including Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Stella McCartney, and just under a hundred other subsidiaries. The other conglomerates, Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH) and Richmond, own all of the other brands out there.

All three of these great companies deal with distributing American and European designers. High fashion mostly remained in these continents, but in recent years it is becoming more prominent in other major cities in Asia, South America, and Australia.

In order to catch up in this field, major cities created fashion districts and invested in these giant conglomerates. Buying into a conglomerate is like buying fifty high fashion designers at one time. Cities like Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Melbourne were able to develop their fashion districts almost instantly after investing. They ultimately rose to earn a fashion capital title like the original four.

Unfortunately, this quick rise to power has created all fashion capitals equal. They all carry the same names, brands, and designers. It is hard to find a high fashion designer that is native to any of the Asian or South American cities. In Tokyo, you would go to Ginza for high fashion, but all you see are the European-American conglomerate stores. There are some moderately popular brands, but none of them are distributed worldwide.

The giant conglomerate companies are monopolizing the fashion industry around the globe. Keep in mind that everything that you find in a foreign fashion capital can be found closer than you think. Walking into a Saks Fifth Avenue or taking a stroll down Newbury Street costs a lot less than a plane ticket. No offense to the giants in fashion, but it is just not worth it to travel to foreign and exotic countries for a new wardrobe.

As I watch debates and read the papers feverishly, my political awareness is slowly gaining strength, and so is my awareness of political style. Every time a big political player steps to the podium to begin a debate or deliver a speech, everything is carefully crafted to say something to the American people. Not a detail goes unnoticed or neglected; the candidate must exude their positions and values in every word they say and everything they wear, or else, prepare for relentless scrutiny. Now let’s analyze the debate (or debatable) fashions presented by the four possible ascendants to the White House.

A note to Hillary-ists: No, I have not forsaken your number one girl. I appreciate all that she has done for the campaign, the country, and pastel-colored pantsuits. She deserves a post all her own.

Sarah Palin: Oh, Sarah. As the female representative in this famed race, you've taken the brunt of the abuse. Not only for the things you may say or do, but also for your never-changing style. She was an '80's beauty queen, and she still has the hair to prove it. The bouffant looks like it could house several small sparrows but, boy does it make an appearance on camera. But I have to admit that the "Tina Fey" hipster glasses give her some smart-girl cred, and a tone of seriousness to offset that very silly hair and bright red lipstick. Although, I must say that there is something charming about her hyper ladylike heels and statement power suits. It is the mixture of tough "pitbull" and motherly conservative that attracts the Chico's crowd who are desperate to have a woman's say on 16 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Her message: I am woman, hear me roar. Now where's my hairspray?

John McCain: Also known on the campaign trail as Grandpa, because he's…well…he's older than dirt. In this case, age is his advantage because he is able to channel the snappy dressers he used to hob-knob with in the 1950's. In this photo, he has that cuddly sweater and those extremely sharp tailored suit pants. He looks good for a 72 year-old gentleman, no?
His message: Did I ever tell you about that time I walked up hill both ways in the snow as a POW?

Joe Biden: There have been rumors recently of Senator Biden dabbling in a case of camera vanity as well, with whispers of Botox injections. Well, whether that is true or false, the man is one of the best dressed men on Capitol Hill. His suits are impeccably fit. Props to him for not being afraid to wear a little bit of a snug fit in the jacket. Also, may I mention how psyched I am that Biden is single-handedly bringing back the pocket square. Hmm, I thought it was lost with chivalry. Classy.

Shake the Tree (67 Salem Street) embodies everything that we here at LBD love and cherish about that hidden gem of shopping: the boutique. There’s just something about stepping into a boutique that you can’t capture anywhere else: that small, cozy atmosphere, those things that would make such a great gift for so-and-so, and those adorable knick knacks that you just can’t put your finger on what you would do with them. Nestled between Laundromats and Italian restaurants in the North End, Shake the Tree is literally the cute girl next door.

Stepping into the store, the first thing that caught our attention was Shake the Tree’s jewelry. Cases are filled with dazzling rings, earrings, and necklaces, all handmade by a variety of local designers. Unfortunately, it is a tad on the expensive side: most pieces price upwards of $85. The clothing and purses also generally run on the more pricey side of the spectrum- though you can bet none of your girl friends will be able to find the same looks at H&M.

But not to be discouraged, my fellow shoppers. At boutiques, this is merely the risk that we run: because for every potential splurge, the unexpected bargain will also be found.

We couldn’t get enough of Shake the Tree’s inexpensive notebooks, stationery, and wrapping paper adorned with fun designs, even the occasional glitter splash. Adorable and affordable winter hats, gloves, and scarves can also be found, along with fun lamps and ceramic bowls. Soft jersey t-shirts emblazoned with horse sketches or the word ‘VOTE’ begged to be adopted into our closets. But what was our ultimate find at Shake the Tree? Their perfumes and soaps. Smelling good never seemed so fun (and so affordable)! Those one-of-a-kind perfumes you just can’t match in department stores line the store’s shelves, varying in size, with prices ranging from $19 to $52. With names like Let Them Eat Cake, Mexican Cocoa, Flowering Willow and Lotus, and French Kiss, we just had to test out every vial! The soaps were even better, the most expensive just hitting ten bucks.

The bottom line: with something for everyone and every pocketbook, you won’t be able to resist Shake the Tree’s dazzling array of gifts and goodies।

What's the Deal with Mineral?

What's the newest trend in makeup? Mineral, of course। It's everywhere you look these days. There are celebrities pedaling it in commercials during daytime television, well-known brands have turned in their liquid foundations for the mineral powder, and Sephora has dedicated an entire section of its Prudential store to a Bare Escentuals display.

You're probably wondering what the big deal is about mineral make up। According to WebMD, mineral makeup began in the mid-1970s when manufacturers decided to create makeup products "made of all natural, finely ground minerals from the earth." There are no chemicals, dyes, or preservatives like those found in traditional makeup. The rumor going around is that mineral is actually better for your skin, nourishing it with minerals like mica and zinc oxide.

The most popular form of mineral makeup, and the one that I have personally tried, is the foundation। When I decided it was time to start wearing cover-up, I went to Sephora, where I purchased a Bare Escentuals starter set which included an all-over face color, a mineral veil (to set the all-over color), a multitude of brushes to get just the right coverage for all kinds of skin problems, and a handy-dandy instructional DVD.

The first time I used it, I thought it was amazing. My skin really looked different, better, and had one even tone. But as I continued to use it, I realized that it wasn't really doing much for my complexion. It's true that it doesn't feel like you're wearing makeup and it doesn't clog pores or create break-outs, which no doubt is a plus.

One problem to consider is that mineral makeup, and Bare Escentuals in particular, is really made for older women. It creates a complexion for women who want their skin to be like it was when they were in college. This has been my experience, but you can also tell by going into any Sephora yourself. There, you’ll find so much excess stuff to cover wrinkles, fine lines and crow's feet. In college, all you really want is for your complexion to stay clear. We don't have wrinkles!

Coast to Coast

Depending on where you live, styles differ for everyone। Traveling from the west coast to the east coast, you can notice many major style changes. Being from L.A., I am most familiar with the west coast style. When I asked 19-year-old sophomore from Santa Monica College, Marissa Littell, to describe the style there she mentioned "Nikes, sandals all year round, skinny jeans, and the newest trend, colored jeans."

^She said that many people are also into moccasins, flannels, crazy colored tights and headbands. In my own opinion, a lot of the style in L.A. is modeled after it's endless graffiti and street art. There is a funky feel to the style on the west coast, and lose shirts with sunglasses are always in because it is hot almost all year round. When I decided to come to the east coast for school, I was interested in seeing the style over here, as well as bringing my own style from California.
Molly Hubley, a 19 year old freshman at Parsons College in New York, described her view of style in the big apple। She said it was hard to put a name on what style is in New York because it is so diverse। She said there is everything from "the bum, grunge look, to the most elite dressed people. Some people wear knock offs that they find on the millions of stands around the city, and some people wear only designer brands."
^As you can see in the picture of a girl who lives in New York, heels with skinny jeans, a nice shirt and a warmer, slimming, sophisticated jacket go well together to give off a classy, stylish city girl look। Since it gets colder on the east coast, Molly mentioned "heavy pea coats for winter, scarves, boots, gloves and hats" will be seen when fall and winter come around.

^Boston is a city where most people have different opinions as far as style goes। It isn't as big or noisy of a city as New York, but has a laid back, chill vibe to it. Lindsey Alston, a 21 year old junior at Emerson College, described Boston's style as "metro and grungy." She said things such as "boots, leggings, skinny jeans, longer shirts and jackets" are often seen around Boston. Since it gets freezing in Boston as well, "trench coats, rain boots and longer jackets to the knees" come in handy for the cold season. There are many different opinions on what style is in these different areas, and these are just some of the numerous types that exist coast to coast.

Chloe on a Budget

Fact: If you're a young, budding ingenue in Hollywood, you own a Chloe mini-dress.

Fact: You have probably been photographed in it flouncing down Robertson Boulevard with man-candy in tow.

Fact: Poor fashionistas would give their left pinky for an original Chloe mini-dress without having to take out a loan.

Well, LBD readers, I'm here to save your left pinkies. Sure, Chloe mini-dresses look fabulous in the summertime paired with flat sandals, but how can we translate bright prints and patterns into the fall/winter seasons without looking like we're headed to Miami Beach?

Accessories, accessories, and then some more accessories. Scarves, deep-hued tights, and prim blazers.

We took a fabulous, put-together look from Chloe's Pre-Fall 2008 collection that cost more than all of our left pinkies combined, and hit up some near-by Boston shopping locales to find this look for less.

The grand total for five different pieces was: $149.99 Which is amazing for a complete outfit! A huge plus side is that your can save the flowery frock for Spring Break, and all of the other pieces are so neutral and simple that they can be easily worked into your wardrobe and lifestyle.

Pushing Daisies and Mad Men : TV Goes Back To Its Roots With Retro Fashion

In the 1950s, as a result of the United States growing consumerism, families were introduced to the television. By 1955, relatively 64.5% of families owned a TV set. While TV did not broadcast 24 hours a day, certain shows became very popular. Variety shows and sitcoms dominated prime-time slot, with shows such as Father Knows Best and I Love Lucy expressing stereotypical gender roles where the wife cooks and cleans and the father brings home the bacon. These gender roles were emphasized through the character's clothing; donning conservative dresses and dress suits. Classic 50s and early 60s fashions included calf length dresses with short sleeves and the occasional apron. Moving toward the late 60s, dresses took a turn for the mod. Dresses became shorter with no sleeves.

Recently, such television programs as Pushing Daisies use fashion to add to the appeal of the show. Pushing Daisies follows the story of Ned The Pie maker (played by Lee Pace) who can bring people back to life. He brings back his childhood sweetheart, named Chuck (played by Anna Friel). Chuck's clothing contributes to the cinematography of the show. The show uses a bright color palette and crazy patterns to offer a fairytale look.

Chuck’s style is similar to those leading ladies that came before her, including Lucille Ball. A twist is put on the traditional "housewife" dress to give it a modern feel. The waitress named Olive (played by Kristen Chenowith) that works at Ned's restaurant "The Pie-Hole" wears dresses that resemble clothing from the 60s. She wears brightly colored, mini-dresses that look like costumes from such shows as I Dream of Jeannie and Lost In Space. The clothes that both Olive and Chuck wear are modern interpretations of past designs. These fashions add to the authenticity of a futuristic fairytale show equipped with classic costumes.

On another note, Mad Men is a show that takes place in the early 1960s. The story involves Don Draper (played by Jon Hamm), who is the junior partner of the Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency. The agency creates advertisements evoking societal norms such as traditional gender roles, even though life isn't really like that. The show covers infidelity, divorce, and religious and racial prejudices among other things.

The clothing worn by all the characters helps convey the setting of show. The women wear rather conservative clothing, often donning dresses. However, some characters such as Joan, (played by Christina Hendricks) continuously push the envelope by wearing shorter (around knee length) dresses and more low cut tops. Peggy (played by Elisebeth Moss) often wears the customary sweater and high-waisted skirt to compliment her character's naïveté. Even the kid's clothes in the show reflect the fashion of the decade.

Catch an all new season of Pushing Daisies starting in October on ABC and the rest of Mad Men's second season on A&E. I'm sure the clothes will be even more fantastic!

Flattering Your Bod

The fashion world is constantly creating new looks and revamping timeless trends to keep us fashion-forward kids fresh. But let’s be real for a minute; every look is not suited for every body. Nothing sucks more than wanting to pull something off and feeling like you can’t. The truth is, you can. There are times when it feels like your body is your biggest fashion obstacle, but it can only be that if you let it. A big part of fashion is knowing what to wear to flatter your figure. Bodies come in all different shapes and sizes: some of us are short, some tall, some full-figured, and some of us nearly shapeless. Many of the styles most difficult to wear well are skinny jeans, high-waisted jeans, and tunics.

For guys and girls, skinny jeans pose problems for those of us who weren’t blessed with long, lean legs. If you are short or have bigger legs, it can be difficult to pull this look off in a flattering way. If you are short, try your skinny jeans with heeled boots or pumps to lengthen your legs, or look for ‘skinnies’ that are meant to stop at the ankle (on a longer leg).

If you have stockier legs (or if you feel that yours do not taper like the skinny jeans), try tight straight leg jeans. They will give you the look while skimming over things, not suffocating them. Another concern in the jeans department is high-waisted jeans. An undefined waist or tummy bulge make this trend tough to pull off. Instead of tucking in a tank or tee, try a billowy blouse with a bold print to focus the attention on your top half and not your middle.

Tunics are another hot item these days; they go great with tights, leggings, and jeans. There are multiple styles, but that means it can be difficult to pick out the one that’s right for you. A general rule: the tunic should cover the bottom of your butt. If it doesn’t, it’s not a tunic, it’s a shirt. The baby-doll style is great for girls with a small bust and/or straight hips; it will create curves. On girls with a larger bust, the baby-doll tops makes you look larger than you are (a.k.a pregnant). Go for a something with more of a straight cut. That way, it won’t look like you’re hiding anything.

Now what you need are a few good shopping suggestions. Citizens of Humanity makes a great straight-legged jean (Ava). They run around $160 and can be found at Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue in Boston. Urban outfitters (especially online) is a great place to look for flattering blouses. They offer a copious selection in multiple styles and patterns. For tunics galore, check out Forever 21. The selection is practically endless, and the cost is low. You can visit Forever 21 online or at their store in Natick, Mass.

Keep it fresh! And remember, flattering your bod’ is only a way to flaunt it.

In Defense of Spandex as Pants

Leggings were a quintessential fashion staple in the 90s. I’m sure we’ve all seen embarrassing pictures of ourselves as children dressed in stirrup leggings with an over-sized sweater. But as much as we’ve criticized our mothers for dressing us like this, leggings, (or what we sometimes call “spandex,” thought not usually containing any), have made a triumphant return to our closets. We pair them under skirts or dresses, instantly turning any item into an outfit appropriate for wear in any season. They keep us warm, they make us look cute—admit it; you can’t have a complete wardrobe without a few pairs of spandex!

There is one thing about our modern spandex that not everyone agrees about. While no one will complain about keeping your legs warm under a skirt (not to mention acting as extra security making it so you never have to worry about catching an unfortunate gust of wind), some may complain if you adopt the increasingly popular “spandex as pants” trend. While I’ll admit, there are limits to what your outfit can entail while substituting spandex, I will wholeheartedly defend not wearing pants.

Here’s the thing: spandex pants are way more comfortable than jeans! As long as your ass is covered, how can anyone complain? If you have a long shirt, some people might criticize you and say, “That’s not a dress.” Well, that’s why you’re wearing spandex! There’s a line, though—tights are not spandex. While you can go ahead and wear spandex with a long shirt without being hidden under a dress or skirt, tights simply do not work this way! Tights are thin and typically sheer, and just look silly without anything covering up your crotch.

To sum up—spandex alone is completely okay! We all know they’re way more comfortable and easier to wear. As long as you don’t cross the line and wear tights as pants, you’re fine!

Fit For a Duke

Rain boots, wellies, or galoshes, whatever you want to call them, it's the time of year again when they start popping up all over campus. We see them in plain colors, fun patterns, even sporting designer (or "designer") logos. They're paired with jeans, tights and even leggings. They're used to make an outfit stand out or just thrown on to protect the feet from the growing puddles on the sidewalk. With such a myriad usage for them today, Wellies are sure to have an interesting history.

The story of rain boots begins with the Duke of Wellington in the early nineteenth century. He called upon his favorite shoemaker to reinvent the Hessian boot into a simpler version that was more practical than its heavily detailed influence. The new style quickly became a craze among English gentlemen. With the invention of rubber came the version we associate with the name today, which was first introduced to the public in 1853. Now, with the added allure of waterproof footwear, the popularity of Wellington boots soared. This was also the quality that attracted the attention of the Army in both World Wars. Many soldiers' feet had been suffering from lack of protection, and this waterproof alternative saved many a life.

Rain boots were never really used for fashion until the twenties when a wave of rebellious young girls wore them to protect their newly exposed legs. They wore them loose and unbuttoned and the sound of the rubber flapping against their ankles announced their arrival minutes before they came into sight. Hence the term "flapper" was born. After this brief venture into the fashion forefront, Wellies faded back into the background for a number of decades.

It wasn't until the uber-icon Princess Di was spotted wearing a pair of green Wellies that the trend burst on the scene again. However, this was again fairly short-lived. The recent surge of Wellie interest began back in 2005 when designers included them in their Spring collections. Perhaps the introduction of funky-patterned rain boots in Europe was deemed too bold by civilians, because it took them years to catch on. Now, not a rainy day goes by without seeing hundreds of different varieties just walking the block of Emerson's campus, all thanks to some Duke with a shoe fetish.

Montreal Style

As the junior class council begins organizing its annual trip to Montreal, we here at Little Black Dress thought we might make our own preparations, by doing our part to ensure Emerson students are in the know when it comes to traveling fashionably. After all, it might be a mere four hours away, but Montreal is a European city at heart, so being comfortable is never an excuse for dressing like a schmuck.

The trip is tentatively set for the weekend of November 7-9, and with temperatures averaging in the low 40s, the weekend getaway might be the perfect time to debut your new winter wear. And lucky for us, chunky knits, military jackets, and menswear patterns like tweed and plaid are all in season. It's on the runways in New York, so you can be sure its on the minds of fashionable Montrealers.

If you are wondering where you'll have the room to pack that chunky, knit sweater, you're on to the number one rule of traveling: pack light. We'll be traveling by bus, which is cramped enough without your fifty-pound rolling luggage. Instead, try a loosely knit scarf in a bright color to make you stand out.

Montreal is perhaps best experienced by foot, so remember your fashionable footwear. Try riding boots as a great alternative to sneakers. Really attached to those rubber soles? Canadian fashion magazines are talking about "posh grunge" so go ahead and bring those ruddy, worn converses, but leave the running shoes and hiking boots at home.

Something else to keep in mind: Montreal is a party city for anyone over eighteen, and the tour guides know all the hottest clubs, so bring a couple going-out looks. Roughed up lace is a big for fall, and all the dancing, drinking, and you-know-what will keep you warm while wearing this otherwise weather-inappropriate look. Keep your eyes open for upcoming information on trip sign-ups, get that application for your passport filled out, and when the time comes to pack those bags, remember to leave room: those with an eye for fashion will certainly be making many a purchase in Montreal's stylish boutiques.
