His daughter relates the price paid by the family during the years after.
About the book:
Because American troops are in far off places in this world, fighting for causes that sometimes cost them their lives, and because our veterans from World War II are a dying breed, it is entirely fitting that we save the stories of our veterans so that their experiences and their voices will never be forgotten and so that current generations might learn about the horrors of war and how the impact of battle never really goes away. One such story is about a Maine man who spent World War II as a member of the Texan 36th Infantry Division. In the Shadow of a Mountain tells the life story of one of Maine's Medal of Honor recipients, Edward C. Dahlgren. It is a timely manuscript in that it details Dahlgren's struggles with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, a condition affecting many of our military veterans returning from war zones today. It is a book that will help readers to know about the devastation of war and how we must always provide care and comfort for our returning veterans.

When Lieutenant Edward C. Dahlgren stepped off the train that brought him home from a combat experience that should have killed him but didn't, he wore a chest full of medals, carried a heart full of sorrow for his men who never came home, and was faced with the daunting task of finding a way to live a life worthy of his survival. In November 1945 the guns of World War II were silenced but the battles continued for Lieutenant Dahlgren and many other soldiers who were haunted by the gruesome events of their war. He had lost 40 pounds from his slight frame and suffered from jaundice. He stammered when he tried to talk and his hands shook so badly that he couldn't hold a cup of coffee without spilling most of it on the counter or in his lap. He suffered night terrors in which German soldiers came back from the dead and pointed their rifles at him. For decades, he suffered in silence until another war erupted and a name was given to his troubles: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

Once described as "Maine's very own Sergeant York", a reference to the movie about World War I Medal of Honor recipient Alvin York, Edward Dahlgren received his own Congressional Medal of Honor from President Harry Truman at a White House ceremony in the East Room in August of 1945. Following the ceremony, Dahlgren returned home to Maine's northern most county to live a life of quiet dignity and amass a legacy of public service. Because of his service to his country in the time of war and his subsequent service to his community and his state in a time of peace, the flags of our country flew at half staff on the day of his funeral and when his passing was announced, The Bangor Daily News honored him with front page coverage.

The book, In the Shadow of a Mountain, is the story of this unassuming hero who grew up without a father in the Swedish colony of Northern Maine, who went to war shortly after his mother's untimely death, who returned home so poor that he wore his army uniform pants until they wore out, who raised a family of four on a paycheck that sometimes didn't stretch quite far enough, who instilled a passion for fairness, honesty, hard work, and a love for learning in his children, who gave generously of his time to help establish a veteran's clinic and nursing home in Northern Maine, and who all the while suffered with PTSD. In the end, the way he lived his life was most definitely worthy of his having survived the horrors of his war. And, the way he lived his life provides lessons for all of us on how to live well even while struggling to do so.

Reviews:
“Sue Daigneault honors her father, the war hero, her father the anguished soldier, her father the man. She writes with passion and unflinching honesty. This book about an embattled World War Two Congressional Medal of Honor recipient could be read by every family of a returning soldier today with a knowing nod. Ed Dahlgren’s life in rural Maine deserves to be remembered.
– Mel Allen, Editor,Yankee Magazine

We all owe Ed Dahlgren a huge debt. At the point of decision, in the midst of ferocious fighting that defined the start of the demise of the Nazis, he demonstrated that rare heroism that changes the course of battle. This book gives us a chance to see what people can do when they know that everything depends on them. Outstanding reading.
-- Colonel Jack Jacobs, Medal of Honor recipient, author of “If Not Now, When?”

Edward C. Dahlgren, a Medal of Honor recipient, was a quiet, competent man who stayed off of the skyline, except in firefights on the battlefield. While the majority of the Medal of Honor Society members meet annually, I never met Ed until a deer hunting trip in Maine. He would not attend big events or tell his story; that was not his personality. Our armed forces personnel know their leaders and their true warriors, but no one knows an individual better than a daughter. Sue has done an outstanding job in writing her father's story, the life of a true American warrior. This is a "must read" for all Americans who appreciate our freedom and love our great country.
-- Colonel Wesley Lee Fox USMC (Ret), Medal of Honor recipient, author of "Marine Rifleman: Forty-three Years in the Corps", "Courage and Fear", and "Six Essential Elements of Leadership".

In the Shadow of a Mountain: A Soldier's Struggle with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Authored by Susan Dahlgren Daigneault
List Price: $16.95
5.5" x 8.5" (13.97 x 21.59 cm)
Black & White on White paper
240 pages
Sunbury Press, Inc.
ISBN-13: 978-1620061497
ISBN-10: 162006149X
BISAC: History / Military / World War II
Also available on Nook and Kindle

For more information, please see:
http://www.sunburypressstore.com/In-the-Shadow-of-a-Mount...

Photo:
http://www.prlog.org/12025499/1

View the original article here
Emmanuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02260668932833423173noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1956940695220642783.post-5147130695890544652012-11-19T20:10:00.000-08:002012-11-19T20:10:00.456-08:00 Revealing My Insides, Life and LovePRLog (Press Release) - Nov 17, 2012 -
. . .I am just being bluntly and brutally honest about my life and my experiences...” Lisa Nicole’s collection of poetry, prose and diary entries are a compelling narrative describing a slice of real life, an intimate view into her loves, friendships, disappointments and belief in the listening ear “above”.
Some snippets from Lisa Nicole’s mind...

January 1, 2001 1:00am

Revealing My Insides, Life and Love
The heart and mind are gone, they have dissipated, and the soul has taken over,
It is the soul who is everything. [http://www.stillpointartgallery.com] This exhibition examines the sacred through visual art. Christine Cote, director of Still Point Art Gallery, offers these words to describe the exhibition: “The sacred manifests itself in time and space. Feasts, festivals, ceremonies, and rituals mark a return to sacred time, a separation from ordinary time, a time generally filled with excitement, significance, and transition. Temples, churches, shrines, and special areas in the natural world are sacred spaces, removed from our ordinary everyday environment, thus allowing us to focus on spirit—that which gives meaning to our lives.”
About one hundred images are included in the online exhibition. They represent the work of over forty painters, photographers, and mixed-media artists. It is very important that you hire a company that is fully lisenced, insured and has no prior complaints from previous customers. Most people do not realize that a lot can go wrong if you hire a contractor that is not reputable. It can cost a lot more money to fix problems caused by an inexperienced contractor.
The best way to find a good contractor is to have a family member or friend refer you to one that they have used. If you can not get a referral from someone you know then the next best thing is to have ServiceBro refer you to a home improvement contractor. ServiceBro has narrowed down the competition to the best contractors on Long Island. They only refer companies that have been prescreened and have no prior complaints. You can save a lot of time by using ServiceBro's referral service.

Recently ServiceBro has expanded their referral service to include tile installers. Now you can hire local tile installers and know you are getting the job done right. They are constantly expanding their referral service to include more Long Island contractors. Does consciousness continue? The second film, Beyond the Physical is meant to pick up where The Afterlife left off and begin to explore the non-physical realms in which the human soul can tap into at any given point. The scope of BTP, is a lot larger than we had originally anticipated. Our original outline of the film was all over the place and would have been very confusing to the viewer. Christmas tree on Saturday, December 1.
Sponsored by the Perkasie Olde Towne Association, the traditional ceremony is the oldest of its kind in the United States, beating Philadelphia, New York City and Washington, D.C. by at least a year. Since 1909, Perkasie residents have gathered in the town square to celebrate the holiday season with an outdoor tree lighting ceremony that typically draws thousands of people.

“We’re proud of the fact that we’ve been doing this longer than any other community in the country,” said POTA President Cathy Weierbach. “It’s just another thing that makes Perkasie special.”

This year’s ceremony will feature several activities for the whole family, including a live performance by Mike Greer and Co. Most activities will take place under a huge heated tent next to the tree at 7th and Market streets. Starting at 5 p.m., visitors will find a wide variety of attractions leading up to the arrival of Santa Claus to light the tree at 7 p.m.

The belief that Perkasie began the tradition of a community Christmas Tree stems for a book published in 1954 to celebrate the borough’s 75th anniversary. Under the headline "Perkasie Firsts," the book says:

"From reliable information, one finds that the idea of a Community Christmas Tree, which is a feature of many towns and cities all over the United States, appears to have originated in Perkasie. The idea was formed in the minds of members of the Order of Owls and put into effect in Perkasie and Sellersville in 1909. In 1914, this feature was taken over by the Chamber of Commerce and is to this date a fixed event improved upon each year."

Colonial Williamsburg had its first community Christmas tree in 1915, according to www.history.org, the official site of Colonial Williamsburg. This was just three years after the first community Christmas tree was lit in Madison Square Park in New York City in 1912, according to www.madisonsquarepark.org.

The tradition also seems to have fallen by the wayside for some years in some communities after the start of World War I, only picking back up at a later date.

An article in the Community Christmas section, published Dec. 5, 2001, in the Perkasie News-Herald, explains the history of the first tree lighting through the words of Samuel R. Kramer, an early owner of the Perkasie Central News — the News-Herald's predecessor in the borough.

In the article, correspondence previously published in the paper from Kramer explains that he got the idea after visiting a neighbor to see their tree, which started him wondering why the beautifully decorated trees were hidden inside homes.

The tradition started the following year in 1909, and was improved with the erection of a large tree in 1910, in front of the J.G. Moyer Building, which once sat at Seventh and Market streets. The building was burned in the 1988 fire, but was on the same site as Shelly's sits today, where the current community Christmas tree is planted.

This year’s schedule:

? 5 p.m. - Streets closed, stores and restaurants open, vendors in place.
? 5:30 p.m. - Perkasie Mayor John Hollenbach Recites “The Night Before Christmas”
? 5:45 p.m. - Performance by the Pennridge School District Faculty and Staff Choir
? 6:30 p.m. – Mike Greer & Co.
? 7 p.m. - Tree Lighting
? 7:15 p.m. - More music by Mike Greer & Co.

Special Holiday Events

¦ All-Day Food and Shopping Specials
¦ FREE Perkasie Carousel Rides, noon - 5 p.m.
¦ FREE Old-Fashioned Horse and Carriage Rides, 5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.
¦ Doug Kramer's Nostalgic Holiday Train Display at the Perkasie Electric Building (101 N. 7th Street), Friday from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, noon - 8 p.m.
¦ Photos with Santa after the tree lighting at Re/Max440 (7th and Market)

Children who bring a non-perishable food item for Pennridge FISH will be entered in a drawing to help flip the switch to light the tree!

POTA’s popular Collectible Holiday Ornament is on sale at many area businesses. The 2012 ornament is $5. Buy early…supplies are limited! Recording artist Cynthia Renee is one such artist.
For Renee, the idea of hitting the pavement and knocking on the doors of record executives day after day is just not feasible. In fact that concept is nearly impossible living in a world in which we pack ten or more hours of work into an eight hour day and spend countless hours raising children, paying bills and doing everything it takes just to make ends meet.

A career legal professional that is a native of Laguna Beach, California and who now resides in Folsom, California with an impressive education in law behind her, Renee reached a crossroads in her life this past year. At a time she witnessed the once lucrative field of law begin to dwindle in a down turned economy she found herself taking a step back to follow what was always her true passion in life; singing and recording music.

Without the ability to travel across the nation and hound big name record labels to listen to her work, Renee has taken the newest approach to getting her name out there, by developing her very own record label and working with a private producer to record her original songs one step and one dollar at a time. Renee is one of thousands of recording artists following this trend of independent record labels. With hard work, determination and the right people on their team, such artists are finding success in the music business at a time when big businesses are seeing tough times, corporations are closing and even the world famous Twinkie is seeing its last day.

"Of course every artist dreams of being picked up by one of the four big record labels, I won't deny that," said Renee, who recently released her original song "Where Are You Now" that is now being sold on itunes, Amazon and is being played across the nation in various forms of internet radio. "But being an independent has its benefits and the concept is growing in popularity these days with technology on our side."

While being an independent artist requires a great deal of homework and funding, it also provides an artist with a flexible schedule to fit their writing and recording needs around other employment, raising children and everyday life. It does, however, require funding which even Renee finds challenging at times as she funds much of the costs herself and is supplemented by that of friends and family and those who donate through her website at www.cynsinger.com.

"I work with a great producer who is talented and reasonable, I was fortunate to connect with him through a series of events and I'm thankful for the partnership," said Renee,, who has been recording with Bill Bentley Studios in Concord, California. "But that doesn't mean it isn't costly, studio time is valuable. Travel to and from the studio is expensive and the costs of getting your name out there do add up."

Getting known on the World Wide Web as an artist isn't as easy as one may think. The process extends far beyond the use of keywords in search engines, building a website or simply putting your product on You Tube. Internet radio is a great platform for independent artists, especially in the Christian Market, however that does not come without a cost . Many require registration fees and funding for additional playtime.

When one first hears the word "independent" when it comes to recording artists, often times they view that word in the same context they would as an independent film or a "B" movie. However, today many artists have found their way to the top on the wings of an independent record label.

Once such artist is Taylor Swift who debuted "Red" at a rate of 1.21 million. Yes, the ever popular country singer has found her way to success by means of an independent record label, The Big Machine. In this scenario, the artist walked away from a development deal through RCA records to work with an independent for the freedom to be herself in her writings and productions. Obviously, the concept is working well.

Additional independent labels that have had recent success include Jason Aldean who debuted at a rate of 409,000 with "Night Train" under his independent label, Broken Bow according to the American Association of Independent Music. Mumford and Sons are the third contributing artists that put independent artists at the top of the Billboard charts for the last five consecutive weeks with their "Babel" album.

Looking at the success of Taylor Swift alone, Renee is humbled by the simple fact that an artist does not have to have a big label to become successful. Witnessing the success of independent labels provides a great amount of inspiration and hope for Renee as she continues to follow her passion by continuing to write and record to complete her own solo album in the early part of 2013.

"Its hard work and it takes a lot of energy, prayers and hope," said Renee. "I pray everyday for this dream to become successful and that my music will be enjoyed by many. I'm thankful to the many people that are helping me follow my dream. My family, my friends and those who have donated funds, downloaded by song on itunes, it all helps."

Cynthia Renee has been singing since she was a child. Performing in various churches, local venues and singing the National Anthem at various events both regionally and nationally while recording her solo album. She believes in continuing to donate her talents at such venues as he way of giving back to those communities that have shown great support for her music.

"I'm not doing this to make tons of money," said Renee. "I love to perform and I believe it is my true calling. The songs I write are from my heart and inspired by true life experiences and most importantly by my faith. I want to share my music with others as I feel it will inspire them and give them hope."

To learn more about Cynthia Renee and her new original song visit her website. Renee's website has audio samples of her music and a link to download her song from iTunes. You can also find her video on You Tube. She welcomes everyone to become one of her fans on her website to receive updates on her music and more at www.cynsinger.com.

http://youtu.be/9yrgdkHM6kA

Photo:
http://www.prlog.org/12025572/1

View the original article here
Emmanuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02260668932833423173noreply@blogger.com0
