Tourism Australia expects industry to double by 2020 to $140 billion

Tourism Australia has launched a new strategic approach which Managing Director, Andrew McEvoy believes will double the value of Australia’s tourism industry to $140 billion by 2020.

Announcing the new strategic approach at the Australian Tourism Directions Conference in Canberra, Tourism Australia Managing Director, Andrew McEvoy revealed the details of the 2020 Tourism Industry Potential.

“Over the past decade global tourism has become much more competitive and this is affecting Australia’s share of the worldwide tourism market,” Mr McEvoy said.

“For Australian tourism to remain competitive we need to take a big picture approach that sees the industry focus on where it wants to be in the next decade.

“The 2020 Tourism Industry Potential is a rallying call to the Australian tourism industry and all levels of government to focus on increasing the returns generated by tourism.

“Through a shared common goal for Australian tourism we aim to grow overnight expenditure to as much as $140 billion by 2020, and with domestic day trips included to as much as $160 billion,” Mr McEvoy said.

Mr McEvoy said the 2020 Tourism Australia Potential strategy involves targeting higher net worth tourists who are willing to spend more in Australia, pushing the total value of tourism up in the country.

“Our focus will be to continue to build demand for Australia’s tourism experience by focussing on a global consumer who is predisposed to Australia and spends more, and also working with industry to ensure investment and quality in products and experiences to meet their needs,” Mr McEvoy said.

Next year's royal wedding will boost UK tourism, VisitEngland has claimed, which could be of interest to those seeking hospitality jobs.

It was announced this morning that Prince William has proposed to long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton and that the couple are to wed next year.

VisitEngland chief executive James Berresford said that he was "absolutely thrilled" for the pair, but was equally as pleased for the nation's tourism sector.

"The wedding announcement today is great news and is a real shot in the arm for tourism," he added.

Mr Berresford went on to say that tourism will be increased even more in 2012, when the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games take place.

Last month, the British Hospitality Association's chief executive Ufi Ibrahim said that the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will have an immediate positive effect on many sectors of the UK hospitality industry, thanks to all of the tourism the events will bring to the nation.

According to an IANS report, the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) has announced that Medical Tourism has now been included under the Marketing Development Assistance (MDA) scheme, under which Medical Tourism service providers will be given financial assistance. MoT has

sanctioned Rs 12.47 lakh as MDA to ten Medical Tourism service providers for the current year.

Medical Tourism service providers include representatives of hospitals accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI) and National Accreditation Board of Hospitals (NABH), travel agents and tour operators approved by MoT.

Singapore visitor arrivals in September 2010 registered a growth of 18.4% to reach 947,000, the highest number of arrivals received in the month of September and the tenth consecutive month of record visitor arrivals for Singapore.

September’s visitor arrivals can be partly attributed to the hosting of the Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix, the world’s only F1 night race and the draw of the many leisure and entertainment events under the Grand Prix Season Singapore 2010. Visitor days were estimated at 3.8 million days, a year-on-year growth of 17.5% in comparison with September 2009.

Indonesia (244,000), Malaysia (95,000), Australia (80,000), P.R. China (74,000) and India (55,000) were Singapore's top five visitor-generating markets in September 2010. These markets accounted for 58% of total visitor arrivals for the month.

12 out of the top 15 markets registered positive year-on-year growth in September this year. In September 2010, South Korea (+63.2%), Malaysia (+40.2%), and Vietnam (+38.9%) registered their highest growth out of the top 15 markets.

AOR posted a 5.2 percentage point increase over September 2009 to reach 82% in September 2010, while ARR increased by 13.1% over September 2009 to reach an estimate of Sin$233.
