Life/Head

I recently found a tv show, documentary really, called My 600 lb. Life. It's about people over 600 lbs. who decide to have gastric bypass surgery. The show follows them for 7 years and is really inspiring. I look at these people and think "if they can go through that and stick to a weight loss/fitness program, then so can I"! They lose in the hundreds!! Ruby is another show I really like. It's supposed to come back on for another season soon, but I haven't heard when.

Have you seen either of these shows?

I LOVE books, but the massive amount of them out there can be overwhelming. I have so many books that I'm having to go through them and weed some out. But how do you do that? How do you choose which ones to keep on the shelf and which ones to giveaway or box up? It's hard, but I'll keep the ones I really love, ones that are autographed, and ones in a series, on my shelves and box up or giveaway the rest.

How do you decide which books to keep and which ones to giveaway/box up?

This is <s>Fart</s> Bart

My youngest son bought him for me in North Carolina when he was getting out the Marines. He saw him listed for sale in the paper and went to check him out. He thought I'd like him as a mate to my baby, Patches. He was underfed and had been abused. His hip was out of joint from being kicked and his ribs were showing from lack of food. My son decided to buy him, even if I didn't want him, just to get him out of that house. He gave them 1/2 down and told them he'd be back the next Sat. and pay the other half and pick him up. He wasn't being discharged for another week and couldn't keep him in the barracks. We were going up the next weekend to help him move back. Poor dog was so scared of everyone and everything when we picked him up. When we were on the road and stayed overnight in a hotel, Patches and Bart got along fine. But when we got to the house, Patches territorial instincts kicked in and she was having no part in another dog being in HER house. So, I asked my daughter to take him for a while, hoping Patches would mellow before long. But as you know, people can get attached to dogs very quickly. And they did. In fact the whole side of my son in law's family did. And it's been about 8 years and they still have him. First Kilah had him, then her husband's grandmother who lives next door to them dognapped him. Then an aunt who lived behind them did the same. So... we will probably never get him back. Which is ok, he has a whole dead end street to roam since the son in law's whole family all live on it.

Have you ever rescued a mistreated animal?

I've been seriously been thinking about switching to a Wordpress blog. I keep going back and forth, weighing the pro's and con's. Decisions have never come easy to me. I think and think and then think some more. It's hard for me to decide what to eat at a restaurant. Yeah...it's bad! So anyway, I emailed my friend Cheryl from CMash Loves To Read because she recently moved to WP, and she said she'd help me make the move, and would talk to some other bloggers who helped her switch. So now I've almost decided to go ahead and take the leap. Still, I'd like to know what those of you who have switched from Blogger to Wordpress think.

Are you happy you switched?

Tell me why you're glad you did, and/or why you aren't.

Wishing you all a great week!!

Crater Lake by Steve Westover

Now Ethan must rally his new friends and decipher the legends of Crater Lake to find the key to rescuing his parents from their earthen prison before he s captured too and their captivity becomes permanent.

This was one of those books that you're not sure if you'll like or not, but you're curious enough about it that you want to read it.

It took me a few chapters to get really interested, but once I hit that spot, I was hooked. I wanted to find out what else was going to happen, and I wanted to know now. I didn't want to do anything else but read. But, as we all know, ya have to eat and sleep sometimes. Even still, I think I read it in just a few hours.

There was adventure, bonding, mystery, adventure and more. And... very good writing. I really enjoyed This book, and loved how the story wrapped up!

This isn't my usual genre (YA/teens), but I'm finding I do like this type of book, and would definitely recommend it.

About The Author:
My wife and I have lived in small town, rural Missouri for 12 years and have 4 entertaining and wonderful children, but I never expected to be living on a farm with chickens, cows, kittens and a dog. I don’t particularly enjoy animals, but I do appreciate them for their utility… and the kids love ‘em.
I’m a banker by trade, but my life revolves around spending time with my family and serving in our church. Being a father and a husband are the most important things I can concentrate my time on and I enjoy it.

I have always enjoyed writing, but I had never even considered writing a novel until one morning I woke up with the idea for some characters in my mind. I was curious if I could write a book so I thought I’d give it a shot as an experiment.

After a long process of writing, nearly giving up mid-way through, editing, shopping for a publisher, changing the title and editing some more, my first book, Defensive Tactics, is being published through Cedar Fort on the Bonneville Books imprint, and will be in stores in August 2010.
My second book, Crater Lake: Battle for Wizard Island is a youth/fantasy book written with my oldest daughter and son in mind. They are avid readers who turned me on to books like Fablehaven and Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which I really enjoy. So, as a father trying to pleasehis children, I wrote Crater Lake for them.
When I was a child, the only pets we ever had were dogs, one cat and a bunny. When my kids were little we had a few dogs, one cat, some birds, hamsters and lots of fish. For the past 13 years we've only had one dog and 2 cats. Within the last month we've gotten some aquariums and started having fish again. We also have a pond behind the house with about 5 HUGE goldfish and 2 really ugly Plecostomus.

As sleepiness pulsed through my veins, I thought of Tom. My closest friend on tour. Like a big brother. Everyone liked him. Who would want him dead?
Tom, I miss you so much. I will find out who did this to you.

Take a trip to the bayou with author Eric Wilder. Hear some of his favorite family stories and try twenty recipes from possibly the greatest Cajun-Creole cook on earth: his former mother-in-law.

Reading and food, what could be better? Well, I got this book free for my Kindle at Amazon, that's pretty cool! This is not only a great little cookbook, it's also a look at the life of the author, his ex-wife and her family. His ex-mother in law is Lily, the best Cajun cook he's ever known.

I loved all the stories about the family, they sure are an interesting bunch! I don't know if I loved the stories or the recipes the most. It's a close race! There were lots of recipes that sounded really good, and most sounded simple to make. I'd definitely recommend this book everyone who likes this type of book.

About The Book:
Here is the story of an unforgettable summer. Set in Plymouth, MA in the late seventies, Little Did I Know is the tale of a young man with an outsized dream – to refurbish a dilapidated but historic theater and produce a season's worth of vibrant musicals. A recent college graduate, he fills his cast and crew with people he has come to love and trust in his university life, and with others whose talents and personalities prove undeniable. Yet, while the productions drive his ambitions, a local woman drives his passions, and their romance is fateful, star-crossed, and ultimately more than either of them expected. Told with with, compassion, and the kind of insider's access to the theater that only someone like Mitchell Maxwell can provide, Little Did I Know is a novel about coming of age in the spotlight and embracing one's entire future in a single season.

My Thoughts:
This book transports you to another time. 1976. A time when things were less hectic. People were more laid back.
It's the story about a young man who knows what he wants to do with his life (direct musicals) and will do just about anything to make it happen. And happen it does.

I've never really thought about what all goes into making a broadway show a success, but this book lets you know it is HARD work for everyone involved. But it's also a lot of fun and the cast and crew become a family.

My one complaint is that the author felt the need to describe the "Dolly's" of just about every woman in the book. Many times. Since probably 99.9% of his readers are women, I don't know why he felt the need to do this. It's not something I care about. In fact, I cared less about the book because of it. For that reason I give the book 3 ★'s. Without it, I would have given it at least 4 ★'s, maybe even 5.

I drove south on route 3 toward Plymouth. It was yet another perfect New England evening, more midsummer than late spring. I was headed to the theater compound, knowing it would be my home for the next hundred days. The past week had been an all-out sprint, and I thought about how my life had changed in just seven days. I would be sleeping at PBT tonight for the first time. It would be a sign that this was real, authentic, and tangible, no matter how wildly insane, no matter how circuitous the path to its front door had been. As I drove through downtown Plymouth, I felt as if I were part of the community. I held a certain fellowship with all these other vendors who were now my neighbors.
It was May 10th. The company would be arriving in two weeks and the first rehearsal was a few days thereafter. On Monday, I was heading to New York City to “steal” a press rep. Secunda would travel with me and we’d secure the band.
Veronica had agreed to meet me for a casual dinner. I had promised to proffer no expectation; tonight we’d be just an old couple visiting and catching up on the events of the day, sharing a burger and a bottle of red. As I parked my car down by the wharf, I saw her waiting for me on a bench overlooking the bay. I realized that, although I had only been away for two days, I felt as if it had been a long, long time since I had seen her smile.
Veronica didn’t appear as pleased to see me as I had hoped. She was awkward and her eyes looked everywhere but at me. She gave me a quick hello and darted to the railing that overlooked the bay, doing anything, it seemed, to avoid connection.
It was early evening and the sun was setting behind the dozens of boats that danced gently in the bay. The wind off the sea was refreshing and pungent. They say that sometimes feelings lie, but often so does the weather.
Atop the knoll sat the stoic Barrows Building, which watched over the bay with disdain. I found it telling that whenever the sun disappeared and the air chilled, it was because it was blocked by the Barrows fortress rather than by a cloud moving within a sweet summer breeze. I sat on a bench and waited to see when Veronica would finally turn and address me. Sensing bad news, I was anxious, but in no rush to see how this would play out.
The harbor bell clanged long and strong. It was seven o’clock. She turned, but stayed by the railing. She leaned against it as if needing support. I would have moved to her, but her energy was that of a force field keeping me at a distance. Her face was drawn and she looked tired and deeply sad.
“Hi,” she said in a whisper. “Hello. It’s nice to see you.” “I’ve been thinking about you a lot,” she offered, still barely audible and still not moving.
“Okay then. And what were you thinking?” I asked, more afraid than curious. “That I will miss you and . . .” Her words hung in the air like poison.
Breathing was hard. “That I will miss you, and that I am so sorry and sad, because I think you are so special and I want to know you, to . . . but I can’t.”
“Can’t what Veronica?”
“I can’t see you, Sam. I’m not brave enough. I said you’d break my heart, but that’s not what I’m afraid of. It’s that I will disappoint you, and that would stay with me forever.”
She had turned back toward the sea and away from me. I could no longer read her eyes. The ambient happy sounds of the village mocked me. “Veronica, what are you talking about? What happened? Are you fucking Sybil, for Christ’s sake?”
She turned to me, and with contempt overtaking any kindness she said, “While you were gone, I thought about it all again. Us.” Her voice cracked with emotion. “I spoke with some people . . . some friends . . . and they told me to stay away . . . that I should stay away, that I had better stay away.” Her last words were caught in the wind and stolen before I could be sure she had actually spoken them.
Frustration got the best of me. “Okay, Veronica,” I shouted across the distance, “play the part of some freak in a bad melodrama. Bravery and courage go hand and hand and you have neither. Disappoint me? You already have.”
She looked at me as if for the last time, wiping away tears that covered her cheeks. “You are so stupid, Sam! Pay attention. You think I work at that shithouse motel because it’s the best I can do? Someone like me?”
She didn’t wait for an answer. Instead she shouted, “goodbye!” and ran down the shore.
The sun disappeared behind the Barrows Building, and the warm, late spring evening suddenly turned cold. I remained still for a long time. I had nowhere to go and no inclination to seek company or solace.
What had happened, really? A girl I had known for a week had dumped me without explanation or reason. I was momentarily stunned. It would pass. I hadn’t come to Plymouth to meet Veronica Chapman. I had come here to work, to find my way. If I let this girl distract me from that task, I was a fraud. I would have convinced my friends and my investors to participate in a charade. I would have lied to those who believed in me and, worse yet, deceived myself.
Yet I did meet her and that reality held on long after the sun was gone and the midnight blue waters of Plymouth Harbor reflected the glow from shore. Finally, at way past nine, I stood and examined my surroundings. I walked slowly to the large granite mausoleum that housed the famous rock. I walked aboard the Mayflower and looked out toward England. I looked up at the sky to find a star to wish upon, but the options were far too many and I could not choose one that promised hope. Then I wondered what I was actually hoping for.
I wasn’t ready to return to PBT. I thought I’d sit and think some more, try to put the thoughts of lost possibilities behind me. I saw that the bench was occupied by an elderly gentleman wearing a Red Sox cap and an oversized Sox sweatshirt. He seemed relaxed, at peace and happy. He was enjoying an ice cream cone, savoring each lick as if it would be his last. On second look, I realized that I knew this man. After a moment’s hesitation, I elected to sit down next to Dr. Anderson Barrows.

If you haven't read my other posts about my camera, my hubby bought me a Cannon last year that cost beaucoup dollars. Plus he bought extra lenses, a hard case, a soft case, and a lot more accessories. I LOVE taking photos and always have a small Kodak with me, but haven't really used my big camera. Why? Because we live out in the country and there are only so many things out there to take photos of...the same ol' trees, the same grass/sand, the same fences etc. I want to go to the Botanical Garden, the Aquarium or a theme park. I did take it to the zoo and got a lot of great pictures. But I'd like to go back and get more.

What expensive thing do you own that you should use more ofen?

Speaking of theme parks, we had annual passes to Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, Busch Gardens, and SeaWorld for many many years. I loved going to see all the shows, concerts, parades and riding the rides. But one by one we didn't re-new. Now, I'm really wanting to get passes again, especially for Lowry Park Zoo and Bush Gardens since they're closest. I love animals and I love rides, especially roller coasters. Wheeeee!
What's your favorite theme park ride?

Did you know that you can find free ebooks on GoodReads? I didn't either until I saw a post on Gina's Library about it. Here's the link. How cool is that?

Where to you find most of your free ebooks?

If you've been reading my reviews, you must have noticed that I give most books at least a 3 star rating. Why? Because I truly love books and am not that hard to please. And unless the book is just awful, or full of sexual content or potty words, I'm most likely going to like it because I don't tend to read books that don't sound interesting to me. I have so many books on my shelves that are screaming "Read Me!!", and I want to get to them but choosing what to read next can truly be daunting. It would be so much easier to just cover my eyes, turn around 3 times and point. Yes, I might just give that a try. Less stress!
How do you choose what to read next?

My youngest granddaughter's 9th birthday was Feb. 15th, and her brother will be 2 on March 11th, so the other grandparents threw them both a party yesterday. I can't believe how fast time goes by. I LOVE my grandbabies!! I thought I'd share a few photos.

My granddaughter is crazy about Twilight, and LOVES Jacob!

It was an ice cream cake...yum

Harley is crazy about SpongeBob!!!

Alecia's favorite gift was a laptop and mouse!

Yes, she's 9 and she got a laptop!! Spoiled much?

Harley got lots of great gifts, but his favorite was a set of keys with a fob!!

He LOVES keys and always wants to put the key in the ignition!

Tomorrow the hubs and I are taking Alecia and Harley to the Florida State Fair as part of their birthday present. We wanted to go Monday but had other plans we couldn't get out of. I guess it's all for the better as now our daughter is going and our son may decide to go too. I'm going to take photos (of course) and will post some next Sunday.

I've been a movie lover for as long as I can remember. I like most genres, with a few exceptions. It's been a while since I've been to see one, and I'm going through withdrawal (it's not the same as seeing one at home). I really want to see the movie Extremely Loud And Incredible Close.

So my question for you this week is:

If you've seen this movie, did you like it, love it, or didn't care much for it.

If you haven't seen it, what was the last movie you saw that you LOVED?

There was pride, fear, joy, and a great deal of anger. A palpable "what now, what next?" danced in the air. Etched on the faces of many of my peers it was clear that their next steps had yet to be choreographed. Everyone squinted under a blazing, perfect mid-May New England sun. Eyes half-closed were a metaphor for the day: there was something special down the road, though non of us could see it clearly and more importantly, none of us knew how to get there.
</fieldset>

Would you leave everything behind to know who you are?
Sara Beth Riley never dreamt she'd walk straight out of her life. Actually she'd never dreamt a lot of things that had happened this year ... From being kidnapped by her own best friend, to throwing her wedding rings into the Hudson River, to calling an old love in France, to getting inked with said best friend, painting the passionate constellation of these choices into permanence. But mostly, she could never have dreamt what started it all. How could it be that her mother's unexpected death, and the grief which lingered painfully long, turned her into the woman she was finally meant to become?
Sara Beth's escape begins a summer of change - of herself, of marriage, of the lives of those around her. In a story that moves from Manhattan to the sea to a quaint New England town, Whole Latte Life looks at friends we never forget, at decisions we linger with, at our attempts to live the lives we love.
Then something happens Apron's broken teenage heart blinks on for the first time since she's been adrift. Mike and his boyfriend, Chad, offer her a summer job in their flower store, and Apron's world seems to calm. But when she uncovers Chad's secret, stormy seas return. Apron starts to see things the adults around her fail to—like what love really means, and who is paying too much for it. Apron has come unmoored, but now she'll need to take the helm if she's to get herself and those she loves to safe harbor.
I've tried to post randomly about stuff going on in my life, but for one reason or another haven't been so good at it. I'm more of a follow a schedule type of person. So, I figured I'd follow the lead of those bloggers out there who do a weekly "my life" update type of post and do a Sunday's Stuff Going On In My Life post. I know, that's a long name, but all the cutsie names were taken.</fieldset>
Wow! If I didn't know better I'd think I was living up north. It is cold!!! You'd think if it got this cold, it would snow too. But no, we just got the cold and bone cutting wind. And it doesn't look like it's going to get better tonight. It's supposed to get down to 25°. Brrrrrr.......

Have you heard of the 2012 Get Moving Fitness Challenge? The current round is for Jan. 1st - March 31st. I joined and pledged to get 45 hours of cardio/strength training for this quarter. So far I've only gotten 6 hrs. but hopefully next week will be the turning point and I'll start racking up hours.

I'm as much a movie lover as I am a book lover. I'm always looking for the next good movie. Has anyone seen Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close? I want to see this so much! I love Tom Hanks. I also want to see The Descendants. They both look really good. I love George Clooney too.

My youngest 2 grandkids both have birthday's coming up, so next Saturday is a birthday party for both of them. Man, I can't believe Alecia is going to 9 yrs. old. And little Harley will be 2. Two!! I'll post pictures next Sunday.

I'm trying to break out of my 1 book at a time mode and go for 2 and an audio. It all started when my book club at SparkPeople chose my suggestion of Always Watching by Brandilyn & Amberly Collins. Then I saw the ebook Lily's Little Cajun Cookbook by Eric Wilder. And of course, since I'm feeling somewhat better, I had to find one to listen to while I walk on the treadmill, cook and clean. So I'm listening to Love In A Nutshell by Janet Evanovich and a few others. I haven't really gotten going on them except for the one I'm reading for tour which is Little Did I Know by Mitchell Maxwell. It took a while to grow on me, but I'm liking it more now that I'm a little way through it. Anyway, I'll see how I handle 4 at a time. Quite a big jump for someone who only would listen or read one at a time, huh?

I've been trying to get my book room reorganized since before the first of the year, but I was hit with the flu the first week of 2012. Then, before I was over that, I got food poisoning. Then, still suffering from both (at least it felt like it) my hubby had to go to the hospital and there was very little sleep to be had for the 5 days he was there. (He's home now and much better thank God. It was touch and go there for a few days). I've been sick, lightheaded and weak, so very weak, for almost 6 weeks. So...when we got back home from the hospital, I slept for 2 days, only getting up to take make soup, take care of my hubby and go potty. Thankfully, it did me a world of good and I started feeling a little more human on Thursday. I spent most of the day cleaning and catching up on laundry, having to sit down and recoup every hour or so. But it felt SO GOOD to be able to get up and move without being dizzy and feeling like my legs were going to give out. It also felt really good to clean. Yes, I said it felt good to clean. I'm weird like that!

In other bookish news, I have been doing really good about cutting back on books accepted for review/tours. I really want to finish up the commitments I've made and cut back even more so I can concentrate on my list of books for challenges. I joined 16 this year. Yep...wow!! Next year I don't plan on joining so many, but then, I think that every year. I can't resist, I just love books and I love challenges. LOVE THEM! But still, I seriously need to cut back. Hopefully next year I'll have the will power to join only my very favorites. Yea, we'll see how that goes.

Anyway, my book room is still a mess. This photo shows only a small bit of the mess. And I don't like mess. At. All. I want it cleaned up and done NOW. It will probably take me another few days to a week to get it finished. Then I have to go pick out a recliner to replace my computer stand because I'm going laptop. I'm not sure how I'll like switching, I'm so used to my computer, but I'm going to give it a shot.

When I went to middle school, I started buying lunch in the cafeteria, and only ate it when mom would make potato or vegetable soup for supper. Her potato soup was the best I've ever ate!!

Nationally bestselling author James LePore has established a reputation as a writer whose vividly drawn characters and morally complex plots have kept readers up to all hours turning pages. His new novel promises more sleepless nights and more nonstop thrills.
Matt DeMarco is an accomplished Manhattan attorney with more than his share of emotional baggage. His marriage ended disastrously, his ex-wife has pulled their son away from him, and her remarriage to a hugely successful Arab businessman has created complications for Matt on multiple levels. However, his life shifts from troubled to imperiled when two cops – men he’s known for a long time – come into his home and arrest his son as the prime suspect in the murder of the boy’s girlfriend.
Suddenly, the enmity between Matt and his only child is no longer relevant. Matt must do everything he can to clear his son, who he fully believes is innocent. Doing so will require him to quit his job and make enemies of former friends – and it will throw him up against forces he barely knew existed and can only begin to comprehend how to battle.
GODS AND FATHERS is at once a powerful mystery and a provocative international thriller, all of it presented with LePore’s signature fascinating characters placed in dire circumstances where every choice poses new and potentially fatal challenges.

This was an awesome book! I loved that Matt would stop at nothing to prove his son was innocent of the crime he was accused of. I also love that Michael finally realized how much he needed and loved his dad.

There were so many things going on that the book never got boring, and I read it in just a few hours because I was so engrossed in the story. This book has it all...good guys, bad guys, twists, surprises and a great ending! I'd definitely recommend it to lovers of mystery/suspense.

“Why can’t you stay at your mother’s when they’re away?” “I told you, Basil’s worried about security.” Though this statement was challengeable on several levels, Matt let it pass. The marriage six years ago of Debra DeMarco, nee Rusillo, and Basil al-Hassan, a rich and handsome Syrian businessman, had marked the beginning of the end of Matt’s long and tortured fight for a place in his son’s heart. Armed with the ultimate weapon—-her new husband’s money—-Debra had made quick work of destroying the last vestiges of Matt’s hopes. A penthouse on Park Avenue, a beach house in Easthampton, a flat in Paris, a “cottage” in Bermuda, clothes and cars virtually on demand, Matt had no way of competing with all this, and no way of expressing his anger—-until tonight. “What about Mina?” Matt asked. “What about her?” “Why aren’t you seeing her?” “She’s studying.” “Studying?” “Yes, studying. You keep repeating what I say. She’s a student. Students study.” This statement was delivered dismissively, not sarcastically. You’re stupid, Dad. I’m tired of you. Why am I bothering with you? are what Matt heard, and it occurred to him, with a clarity that shocked him after all these muddled and painful years of effort and rejection, effort and rejection, ad nauseum, that he could not hurt Michael, that his own son was indifferent to him, and this was a blow, and strangely a release. “Well, your friends are assholes, and you are too, Michael. You’re an arrogant, shallow asshole. Where you came from, I don’t know. But not from me.” “That could be. Maybe Mom had an affair–like you did--and I’m not your son. Do I care? No, I don’t. Can I go upstairs now? I’ll leave in the morning.” In the kitchen, Matt poured himself another scotch. He took the pizza out of the refrigerator and sat down to eat it, surprised to find that he actually had an appetite. Until tonight, despite the bad cards he had drawn, he had never stopped trying to break through to his son. It’s over, he said to himself, over and done. He’s not your son. He’s Debra’s son, Basil’s son. You lost him a long time ago. He finished the pizza and was wrapping the garbage to take out in the morning when the doorbell rang. Looking out the kitchen window he saw that it was snowing heavily. Those idiots, he thought, they’re probably stuck someplace. No choice but to let them in. But when he swung open the front door, it wasn’t Adnan and Ali, but his friends Jack McCann and Clarke Goode, homicide detectives who he had worked with for many years, standing facing him. He could see their unmarked car at the curb, and behind it, blocking his driveway, a Pound Ridge patrol car, its engine running and headlights on, two uniformed officers in the front seat. McCann, a florid Irishman whose blue eyes were usually lit by some inner secret joke, looked grim; and Goode, a gnarled black man who never failed to greet Matt with a big smile, was not smiling. Far from it. “Come in. What’s up?” Matt said. Then, nodding toward the street where the patrol car sat: “What’s with the uniforms?” The two detectives stepped into the foyer. “Take your coats off,” Matt said. He could see they were dressed for work, sport jackets and ties on under their trench coats. “Matt...,” McCann said. “Talk, Jack,” Matt said. “Is somebody dead?” “Is Michael home?” Goode asked. He had not taken off his coat, and neither had McCann. “That’s his car out there,” Matt said. “You know that.” “Where is he?” “He’s upstairs.” Matt looked from McCann to Goode, then back to McCann; looked in the eyes of each, and did not like what he saw. “What about Michael?” he asked. “We’re here to arrest him,” McCann replied. “For what?” Drugs, Matt thought, good, let the kid get a taste of the pain he’s always inflicting on others. Him and his two Arab suppliers. “For murder, Matt,” Goode said.

by Sharon Fox

Paperback: 308 pages
Publisher: Southern Hospitality Books (April 8, 2011)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0615453724
ISBN-13: 978-0615453729

Comfort Food for the Mind, Body, and Soul is the first of a series of unique cookbooks by Sharon Fox. Not only will you find fabulous recipes made simple, but you'll also find many words of encouragement, life lessons, stories of faith, and inspirations.

Where to begin? My thoughts on this book are running around in my head, but I'll do my best to make my thoughts as clear as I can, and not just a jumbled mess.

Ok...when I read what the book was about:
fabulous recipes made simple, but you'll also find many words of encouragement, life lessons, stories of faith, and inspirations, I thought I'd LOVE this cookbook. And I do... sort of.

I loved all the recipes, inspirational quotes and verses from the Bible. What I didn't love was that the author included that she was sexually abused as a small child. That would have been semi ok, but we don't just read that she was abused, we learn exactly what was done to her, as well as what she saw others doing. I just think it would have been better if the author would have written two separate books, one a cookbook and another about what she had gone through as a child. Am I seriously the only person who feels this way? I doubt it, but there aren't enough reviews on this book to know for sure. I'v only seen two other reviews so far and neither one of the reviewers mentioned anything about the odd feel of the cookbook because of the vivid abuse stories.

What she went through was a horrible thing that no person, especially a child, should every have to go through. I just don't think she should have told the story in a cookbook.

Now, back to the recipes. All the recipes sound easy enough and yummy! I haven't made any of them yet, but here's one that Henry (hubby) will probably love, because he loves both biscuits and sweet potatoes.

Sweet Potato Biscuits
2 1/2 c. Bisquick
1 c. mashed sweet potato
1/3 c softened butter
1/2 c milk

Preheat oven to 400
Mix ingredients to for a soft dough
Turn onto floured surface
Knead just enough to bring it all together
Roll out to 1/2" thick.
Cut with biscuit cutter
Place on ungreased cookie sheet with sides touching
Bake 12-15 min. or until golden brown

Makes 12

As for recommending this book, if after reading my thoughts you think you still would want to read it, I say go for it. The recipes are great and I'm sure you'll find many that your family will love.

<georss:box>32.7119341 -85.3373137 32.925547099999996 -85.0214567</georss:box>

The Taba Convention by Stephen W. The Taba Convention The Jordan Kline Series – Book One:
Two deadly adversaries, one horrific conspiracy against Middle East peace. Disillusioned with the continued killing in the agency, Jordan Kline resigns to take up hotel management studies. Now the General Manager of the Sands Eilat hotel, Jordan enjoys life with his girlfriend Irit in the Red Sea resort town. An ex colleague is taken out on the Arava road, the long desert road leading from the Dead Sea to Eilat. On his way back from Tel Aviv, Jordan witnesses the dying man’s last words. They are words that will push Jordan reluctantly back into the world he had turned his back on. Jordan unravels a deadly conspiracy that threatens to engulf the Middle East in war. He becomes the most hunted man in Israel. Forced to use all his cunning, Jordan must stay one step ahead of men that kill to fulfill their deadly ambitions. The only problem is that Jordan does not know who they are, and time is running out as the historic date of The Taba Convention approaches. The Taba Convention is filled with surprising twists and turns, and interesting insights into the world of hotels interspersed in the suspenseful action. The future of the Middle East is in doubt right up until the climax at the Taba Hilton Hotel in Taba Egypt. The Taba Convention is a political action adventure thriller that will keep you turning the pages faster and faster.

When the author asked if I would like a copy of this book for review, my first thought was to decline his offer, because I'm not a fan of political books. But I am a huge fan of thrillers, so I decided to read out of my comfort zone and give it a try. I'm so glad I did!

The book is centered around Jordan Kline, who is thrust back into the life he so desperately wanted to leave behind. He knows he can't stop the enemy from what they are determined to do by himself, so he looks to those he thinks he can trust the most to help him.

There are many surprises and roadblocks, lots of white knuckle moments and twists, and they all will keep you glued to the pages.

I loved that the author added so much description of the area, it helped me "see" where they were.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves lots of action and suspense.

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://ratb2.blogspot.com/2012/01/taba-convention-by-stephen-w-ayers.html" title="The Taba Convention by Stephen W.
How far along are you in your current read before you start thinking about what you’ll read next?

I usually know what the next 2-3 books I'm going to read are. That way I'm sure to get the books I've agreed to do a tour/review of read in time. If I don't have anything scheduled for a few days, I'll pick a book from my TBR shelf of from the books I have set aside for a challenge.

</fieldset>
