Bleecker Bob's is one of the oldest record stores in New York City dating from 1968. But Bob's is going down, due to a rent hike or perhaps just bad business (even while most vinyl LP stores are thriving). And as reported here first, Bob's is becoming yet another STARBUCKS. A story in the NY Times confirmed it today.

Freedom Tower Rises

At night from my Village perch the Freedom Tower looks like a jeweled Christmas tree. But up close at Ground Zero, it leaps to the sky and stirs the heart. Ground Zero at the World Trade Center has been a dead zone for years, so, though I hate the blue glass building style which permeates every skyline in the US, this is a welcome sight.

Just south of downtown Cold Spring is a placid wooded area that was once the site of the "deep breathing ... furnaces, and the sullen, monotonous pulsations of trip hammers"* of the well-known West Point Foundry. The foundry, which began operations in 1817 and continued through the 1880s (other industrial firms occupied the premises through the mid-20th century), was the "most extensive and complete of the iron works of the United States."* The site was chosen as one of four federally-subsidized foundry sites by President Madison in 1812 and the first director was Gouverneur Kemble, a resident of Cold Spring.
