I Am Still Here!

It has been much too long and for those of you who are still subscribed, I know you're quite suprised to see me in your inbox. Gosh, so much has happened since the last time I posted here. I and my family are well and thriving! You know that saying, "Life is what happens while we're making plans"? Well, that definitely applies here.

Let's see, hmmm...I won't bore you with trying to catch up with all that has gone on in the months since my last post, but to bring you up to speed with what's currently going on--I've begun accepting new interior design clients. I had taken a bit of a hiatus, even before COVID-19. I needed to get my bearings and focusing on Gillian and GiGi and Rho was an excellent way to do it. I never lost the desire to design interiors; just as I've never lost the desire for fashion. Of course, the latter being my first and always true love!

Last month, I was featured in Voyage Atlanta, where I shared a little more of my journey with their readers. I thought this was a great opportunity to share more of myself with those who probably didn't know very much about me or know anything about me at all. You can click here to read the article. I'm feeling a lot more inspired these days; although, I must admit it sometimes goes and comes. I think this is due in large part to a wicked thing called perimenopause! She can be pretty cruel on some days and then on others, kind enough to allow a reprieve.

A Model Home Tour of Eleven Homes

On this past Saturday, I toured eleven model homes in the Cresswind community in Peachtree City, Georgia. The community is an active adult community for those homeowners who are 55+. All of the floor plans are quite nice with an extensive selection of design elements to create a home specifice to ones aesthetic and lifestyle. The community also boasts ammenities that are not to be rivaled. With a large community center, that hosts culinary classes, swimming, fitness center, and much more. It really does have something for everyone. The residents also have a number of clubs in which they can participate. One of the clubs that piqued my interest is the travel club. The members have already traveled to some pretty amazing destinations. All floor plans can be built to include a basement or a loft. It took a bit of time to tour all eleven models, but I can honestly say, it was well worth the time.

Take a look at a few images of one home I was able to capture. What I loved about this open living space is that five individual living areas were created for different activities; and yet still be apart of the entire room. Talk about a wonderful space to entertain in, with more than enough room for everyone to move about freely.

A New Feature That I Am So Excited About

There are many things I have to be thankful and grateful for and I make sure to express my gratitude daily, by taking a moment to pause, reflect, and write at least five of them in my gratitude journal. I think I've shared here that Gillian, my daughter, and I began a blog almost three years ago, GiGi and Rho, where we share our thoughts, ideas, adventures, misadventures, etc. We also started a YouTube channel a year ago this month where we do pretty much the same in video, that we like to call episodes. Last month she and I celebrated one year of having the GiGi and Rho book club, that now boasts nine incredible books, by just as many talented, award winning female authors of color. So, to say I am proud of our efforts is really an understatement. Doing all of this with a teenage daughter is quite the feat...for both of us, as she is a challenge for me and I for her; but we, somehow, have figured out a way to make it work. Somehow.

This month, on the "My Style" page of the August, 2021, issue of Atlanta Magazine, we can now say we have our first print publication feature! And it feels amazing! Gillian and I don't sell anything. We don't make anything. We don't offer a service. What we do offer is insight into how we make our relationship work. We spend a lot of time together. That's what solid, strong relationships take--time, effort, respect, and trust. We commit to doing things together and follow through on each and every one of them. So, to see our smiling faces staring back at us from that page in Atlanta magazine, makes us feel seen; recognized, and honored that the team there felt there was something there, with us; something enough for them to place us in their magazine, to share with their readers. We are grateful.

My Favorite Looks from the Dior Autumn-Winter 2021-2022 Collection

Well, hello there and welcome back! I have not done a fashion post in quite some time, so I thought since I am head over heels with what Dior sent down the runway for it's Autumn-Winter 2021-2022 Collection, on July 5, 2021, in the garden of the Musè Rodin, in Paris, France.

I would share some of my favorite looks with you. To be honest, I loved all of the pieces, of course some more so than others. Christian Dior, with Maria Grazia Chiuri at the helm (July, 2016), has been on fire. There has not been a collection she has done, since her appointment, that I've not dreamed of wearing. I think her designs strike just the right balance between being strong, feminine, and sexy. The fabrics used to create the designs for Autumn-Winter 2021-2022, exudes all three of the aforementioned in a very luxe, polished, and well-executed way; leaving no detail undone.

My New SMEG 50's Style Kettle

I have wanted a SMEG kettle for the longest! I love the retro look of all of their products and how beautiful they look on any kitchen counter. So, while out one day after visiting the dentist for my bi-annual check-up, I stopped into my local Williams Sonoma and had a look around. Williams Sonoma is my favorite store for the kitchen. They always have a nice selection of...well everything, you could want and need, to make your time in the kitchen an enjoyable experience. It's the little things that can change the whole experience. And if this is not your first time here, then you know my motto of "Make it AMAZING!" That is precisely what SMEG products do, for not only your kitchen, but your everyday experiences in your kitchen.

There are thirteen colors to choose from and one designer collaboration with Dolce and Gabanna. There are also three different kettle styles; kettles, variable temperature kettles, and mini kettles. I am always thinking of ways to elevate my daily routines, and my new kettle does just that! It quickly makes boiling hot water for my tea, for my French press coffee maker, and even for my instant grits when I'm feeling lazy. Yes, I know, instant grits? Although, I've come a very long way in the kitchen, over the past year, baby steps with the grits and a few other things!

I felt a little bad when I asked my son if he wanted me to open a package he had received from Amazon. I had no idea what was in the box and neither did he. So once I opened the outer box and unwrapped one side of the bubble wrap, I say the SMEG name on the box. I immediately began to squeal with delight and my son knew then what was inside. I apologized...I mean, I had no idea! I had forgotten that my birthday was the next week and just didn't think of the possibility of it being a gift for me. Oopsie! So, finally on my birthday, when I officially opened the entire package; there were three boxes in total to open, I was just as elated as if I had no clue what the contents of the box were. Sheer joy and excitement!

I wonder if I manifested the kettle when I admired and touched it in the Williams Sonoma store that day? I do believe in manifestation, folks. Well, let me say this, since there are other SMEG products I wish to add to my pretty kettle, I am going back to Williams Sonoma and touching the four-slice toaster, the blender, and the mixer! I would also like the milk frother and possibly the drip filter coffee machine. The coffee machine can be the last purchase since I am still pretty happy with my Keurig; which is seeing less and less action since acquiring my new French press coffee maker and of course my new cream SMEG kettle!

Here she is. The sunshine in my kitchen! Each time I look over at her, I get all warm inside; which is probably because I've just enjoyed a hot cup of tea. As always, my Friends...

Design Inspiration: DESIGNERS TODAY Magazine

Designers Today; May/June 2021

Can we talk about this cover? WOW!!! Just WOW!!! I first saw her, Eden, in my feed on Instagram. Totally stopped me in my tracks. As a person, who is moved by how leaves rest after being swept up in a swirling wind; it was not at all, a stretch for me to be captivated by this extraordinary piece, Eden, by Kabriah Asha. Did I tell you her name is Eden? The name, of course, is mentioned in the Bible where the story of Adam and Eve began. Eden is thought to be a place of paradise; a garden of luxury, pleasure, and delight. In my mind, it had to be a place of unrivaled beauty; where the landscape and all that it held was the original creation of art. Look at her. I think she is perfectly the embodiment of the name. The tilt of her head and fixating gaze exude strength and resilience. Her cloak of butterflies and flowers, symbolic of the metamorphosis of life. Beauty is not fragile. Beauty endures. Beauty is Eden.

When I finally received my copy of Designers Today magazine in the mail, I breathed a sigh of relief because I could gaze upon the striking work of art for as long as I wanted. I'm even considering framing it. Jane Dagmi, editor in chief of the magazine, does it again; selecting yet another moving and thoughtful work of art for the magazines cover. Bravo all the way around. Bravo!

Ms. Asha was asked by Florida based interior designer, Nicole White, to create a large portrait to be featured in her closet design for the Kips Bay Show House. I would be remiss, if I did not mention that Ms. White is an award winning, steller interior designer, who was one of four Black interior designers to participate in this springs, 2021, Kips Bay Show House. Kabriah Asha is an exceptionally talented artist, who is no stranger to the power of creativity. Her mother is interior designer Kesha Franklin and her grandfather and uncle were also creatives. Ms. Asha has been drawing since she was a little girl and found that it came quite naturally to her. She studied illustration at the Fashion Institute of Technology; a school that has quite the lengthy list of successful and uber-talented designers and creatives to their credit. HAPPY JUNE!

Can you believe we are already in the month of June? Time waits for no one, that's for sure! June is my birth month, so I intend to make the most of it. Not that I don't make the most of all months before and after, but there is something about my birth month that gives me this renewed sense of purpose and energy. I feel like the moon is positioned just right for me to make even the most seemingly impossible project, task, dream possible! Now that I think of it, isn't the moon a huge factor for the month of June? I'm not up on astrology, however I will need to research this a little more!

A couple of things...

(2) Many of you know that my daughter, Gillian and I, have an adventure that we began two years ago, GiGi and Rho; which you can visit the website by clicking here. In those couple of years, we have created a Facebook page, Instagram profile, Pinterest account, Twitter, and YouTube; all of which can be found on each platform as GiGi and Rho. We didn't just stop there either; there's one more. Last July we began a book club so that she and I could expand our library with female authors of color, who write about characters of color. It is so very important for us all to see ourselves in all things we enjoy, books included.

We have just introduced the first of three books in our GiGi and Rho Book Club Summer Series, Girl In Translation by Jean Kwok. We both are very excited to dive into what will be a wonderful read about Asian culture and the experiences of a young Asian girl named Kimberly Chang. We would love to have you join us! Contemplating an Exterior Refresh

I don't know about you, but I am not one to wait until spring to do some deep cleaning and organizing around the house. Once the Christmas decorations come down, the Fabuloso, Windex, and a few other cleaning products come out. Hmmm, just typing that, I thought to myself, "I'm not being very green." I try. I am going to have to do better with that, for sure. I actually enjoy cleaning. I find it somewhat...cathartic. I do some of my best thinking while cleaning, honestly. The same applies for organizing and oh, let me not forget doing laundry. The end result is so rewarding. I just wish I could get my family onboard with my way of thinking. Keep hope alive!

It is also during this time that I think about how to refresh my home. It's still winter and will continue to be so for weeks; however, the thought of walls freshly painted or wall papered, new pillow covers, new draperies, and accessories...ahhhh, it makes my heart flutter and I become a little giddy with excitement. I have really been contemplating painting the exterior of my home a warm white with putty colored trim. I am totally vibing on the neutral colors right now; even in my interiors. Having said that, Pinterest will once again see a lot of action from me as I pin all images that inspire my desire to update my home. Below are some images of homes that have me contemplating a change in my exterior color palette.

I think when considering white exteriors, one must also think about the surrounding landscape. It doesn't have to be anything over-the-top, but it does need to be well thought out and executed. White is a clean canvas from which to create a simple, yet beautiful landscape, filled with natural wood elements, patinaed brass, striking iron, greenery and color. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

HAPPY NEW YEAR, my longtime friends! I pray that you all made it through 2020 healthy, happy, and hopeful. My family and I did, and so it is with a grateful heart that I give all the glory and praise to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. No matter your religious beliefs, or if you have any at all, having a higher power to trust and believe in when that trust and faith has been compromised by imperfect humans, is oftentimes the comfort that is needed to get up each day and behave in a manner that suggests EVERYTHING IS GONNA BE ALRIGHT! Do I believe everything is going to be all right? Absolutely, I do, with every fiber of my being and I pray you do as well.

While grocery shopping the other day, the clerk asked me if I was excited about the new year. Contemplating my answer and doing my best to answer with as much authenticity and truthfulness as I could; my answer went a little something like this. I am hopeful, with little expectation of change, in the immediate future.

(1) I practice gratitude daily. I will continue doing this.

(2) My prayer time will increase, as this is the time when I share with God all that I am encouraged by, discouraged about, and asking for his assistance with (the healing of those in need, the strength to continue, and a willing heart to do what He has asked of me to do).

I don't (3) meditate quite as much as I think I should; however, a remedy to this is forthcoming. If you still have yet to try meditation, guided or otherwise, I encourage you to begin. It is a daily practice, just like making your bed each morning, after rising. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! I've asked my family to practice eradicating the word "try" from their vocabulary, as it relates to things they want and need to do. I feel the word (try) allows us an escape when things don't go as we wanted them to go. "Well, I tried," so now I can quit and give up. "Practice" indicates that you are continually doing a thing to achieve better results.

(4) Exercise and physical activity are a must; not just for my physical health, but my emotional health as well. I know that when I have gotten in some physical activity, I am better able to handle those inconveniences that may happen during my day.

Everything I listed is an exercise in self-care, however, there is one thing that I may add to this that I have not been practicing, and that is (5) rewarding myself with a treat; some small little something that I find pleasure in. I need to compose a list of those things to have at the ready because I plan to use this list quite a bit in the upcoming year.

What are some things you will be practicing in 2021, to ensure your year yields positive results? Remember PRACTICE. When you fall short, and you very may will, this way of thinking allows you the grace you will need in order to begin again.

Let's Catch Up!

Since it's been months since I last made an appearance here, I would love it if you would afford me the opportunity to catch you up a bit, and then practice resuming some sort of routine, from this point going forward. I hope that is okay. First, I'd like to say, "Thank you!" Always, thank you for opening my posts and reading what I have to say. I appreciate it more than I can express in writing. Second, how are you holding up? It's been a pretty rough year for many; some more so than others. I hope we all have been checking in with family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues to see if there is anything we can do to be of help and/or assistance. I also hope we are all continuing to practice social distancing and wearing masks while out in public.

I celebrated my 51st birthday in June! It was a lovely day out with the family that I thoroughly enjoyed. I have to be honest, with only a couple of months of being 51 under my belt, I can already feel the difference; pysically that is! I am by no means complaining. Thank God for the blessing of seeing another year and allowing me more time to make an impact. I am grateful beyond measure. Life really is good!

Gillian, my daughter, and I have worked diligently to accomplish a few goals we had set for GiGi + Rho at the beginning of the year. We hosted two giveaways; one for Mother's Day and one for her 15th birthday. They left us walking on clouds. You know how something seems so out of reach and difficult, until you do it and then you realize it was nothing to fret about afterall. We're seeing this happen over and over again with some of the things we're doing, and I have to tell ya, it feels really good! We just recently began posting on our YouTube channel, that we created in October 2018, but finally, put the time and effort into it, and now feeling pretty good about it. We now have three videos to amuse viewers. Click here to have a look! We are hoping to continue to grow in our relationship with one another, as well as what GiGi + Rho can offer other mom's and daughter's, and other female relationships.

In June, I participated in a movement called "Share The Mic Home Edition" that was planned and executed by Albie Buabeng of "Albie Knows". Albie paired Black interior designers and creatives in the home sector with white counterparts to share the mic and be exposed to an audience that may not otherwise have the opportunity to meet or get to know us. I "shared the mic' on the Instagram page of Charlotte Martin Smith for the entire day of Thursday, June 18th. I shared, with Charlottes audience, who I am as a Black woman, wife, mom, interior designer, and content creator; emphasizing that we are more alike than different and that our differences are the very thing that gives us the advantage, instead of being a disadvantage. It was a very exciting movement to be apart of and the reception was quite inspiring. After this initial Share The Mic Home Edition, there were two others to follow.

Also in June, I had the pleasure of being featured on Kandid Konversations with Kymberlyn Lacy; a fellow interior designer, entrepreneur, and budding author, who hosts her own Facebook Live show every Monday evening at 7pm (CT), where she interviews amazing talent with very diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise. In our segment, Gillian joined us, as we discussed all things, mom and daughter. A real eye-opening chat! Kymberlyn did a fantastic job, asking thoughtful and probing questions. I even learned things I did not already know about Gillian's thoughts on a couple of topics. She remained poised, yet moved when the conversation took a bit of an emotional turn. I expect to see more of Kymberlyn hosting on other platforms, bringing her charm and interview style to a larger audience.

In July, I got to talk fashion with Tahana Massey; Wardrobe and Closet Curator, on her first Facebook Live broadcast. It was a lively conversation as we discussed essential wardrobe pieces such as the blazer, the button-down shirt, denim, the LBD, the T-shirt, and a few others. The chat was well attended and the audience participation was energizing and could have gone on for hours! I'm excited about an upcoming fashion chat with Tahana where I think this time we will be discussing fall transitional pieces. She is one to watch, as she has a love for fashion, a penchant for style, and a discerning eye for putting it all together.

August is a month for the Las Vegas Furniture Market and I was thrilled to take part in two panel discussions. The first was sponsored by Furniture, Lighting, and Decor magazine and moderated by business coach and author (and the great-granddaughter of Frank Lloyd Wright) Melissa Galt. I was joined by interior design talent Eneia White of Eneia White Interiors and Michel Smith Boyd of Smith Boyd Interiors. Erika Ward of Erika Ward Interiors was scheduled to join us, but a family emergency kept her away. Thank goodness all went well and everything and everyone is doing fantastic! We discussed what we can expect in 2021 regarding furnishings, lighting, and decor. This panel was full of opinions, sass, and laughter! Don't believe me; click here to watch for yourself!

The second panel discussions was about the "Build The Room" Virtual Showhouse I participated in, along with eleven other interior designers from different markets in the United States. It was moderated by Cindy Hobnett, Creative Market Director for Las Vegas Market. All of the designers were all charged with building a room that would make us want to live in and enjoy, with no expense spared. Ha! It is virtual, remember! That's the beauty of doing a showhouse; you can create the client you would like to design for and the creative (and financial) sky is the limit! There is nothing to hinder your creative imaginings, and the best part of all, it's virtual so you don't have to deal with timelines, schedules, and house rules of doing a real showhouse. I designed a teen bedroom with Gillian and her friends in mind. Our teens are sometimes forgotten when we think about our living spaces, and with all of our lives being turned upside down with the latest world crisis, they need a place that speaks to who they are, supports their dreams, and replenishes their spirits. Their own personal retreat and safe haven from the ills of the world; their world. Even if a room is shared with another sibling, there are still design savvy ways for each to have their own slice of "my space." As of the writing of this article, the recording of my panel had not yet been published. Lastly, but certainly not least; I was featured in Designers Today magazine, along with four other interior design talents, who have gained quite the client following for holiday design and decorating. I adore the holiday season and try to carry the spirit of it with me long after it's over. HAPPY APRIL! Sometimes You Have To Make Your Own Sunshine

Hi there! I feel like today. I know...what a way to begin a post!  Well, sometimes I just do.  I have an autoimmune thyroid disease (Graves), I’ve been told I’m perimenopausal (this should be considered a disability), have seasonal allergies (just popped up in the last couple of years), feeling a bit of restlessness, and somewhat emotionally drained by all we’re going through as a global community. Dangit, that just exhausted me even more!  I have been resting in my home, on my sofa, and praying whenever my spirit says, “PRAY.”

My family is accustomed to me being ENERGETIC, TALKATIVE, and ENGAGING. Sorry folks, I just don’t really have that in me right now.  Out of nowhere, I thought, “Go get that pretty yellow jacket from the closet that you’ve not worn yet.” And so I do! I yank it off the hanger, throw it on, and wear it while I rest in my home, on my sofa, while I pray.

Well, wouldn’t you know it, I began to feel better and my family (who were all in separate rooms) began to come around and be CHATTY, FUNNY, and VISIBLY HAPPY! Wow! Hmmm, “DO WHAT YOU CAN, WHERE YOU ARE, WITH WHAT YOU HAVE.” (Teddy Roosevelt)

HAPPY MARCH, 2020!

I know! I know! Bad Girl! BADDDDDD Girl! It has been far too long and I should be ashamed of myself! Can I be honest? Although I still love everything about blogging, as I love to chat; I have not been so inspired to talk about much. No, seriously! I've felt like I've been in such a rut, but not to worry, I think the fog is lifting.

HAPPY MARCH! I am looking so forward to this month with great expectations of amazing happenings, beginnings, new discoveries, and new adventures! Yes! Let all the awesomeness begin! What are you expecting this month? Do you have any plans? Are you looking forward to spring? What about daylight savings? I would have liked more of a winter season here in Atlanta; especially since I purchased three new coats and one fabulous capelet! Deep breath...long sigh. Oh well, let the spring shopping season begin!

Designer Experience Atlanta...

A couple of weeks ago I attended the Designer Experience, a three-day "experience" exclusively for design trade professionals, organized by Designers Today magazine and held at The W Midtown Atlanta. This was the third gathering, with the inaugural Designer Experience launch held in North Carolina last spring. It was my first time attending and I must say, it exceeded every expectation. Thank you Jane Dagmi, the editor in chief of Designers Today magazine, and the rest of the amazing team for creating an incredible experience for us all. One filled with memories that will inspire leaps of faith in our businesses, a new way of thinking about collaborations, a reminder to keep a sense of adventure and exploring our own backyards, and the importance of strengthening relationships with new friends and old.

We kicked off the first day listening to speakers Kristin Drohan (Building a Furniture Business + The Sit Test for Clients), Melissa Galt (Planning Your Best Year Yet by Looking at Where You Are), Stephanie V. (New Beginnings by Design), and Kandrac & Kole (Staying Flexible in the Face of Change). The keynote speaker was Shelly Rosenberg of Acorn & Oak. The cocktail and dinner party were sponsored by Jaipur Living. A wonderful beginning to what would culminate into an epic experience.

The second day was filled with field trips to ADAC (Atlanta Decorative Arts Center) and AmericasMart. At ADAC we were delighted with a question and answer session with Alexa Hampton. She is a gem who doesn't mind sharing the highs and lows of her business, as well as amusing tidbits about her life. A lively reception followed at the Theodore Alexander showroom also sponsored by Theodore Alexander. At the Strathmore showroom, we were further enlightened about designing with the right hardwood floors; sponsored by Emily Morrow Home. While at AmericasMart we were treated to a personal account of what it's like to work on a design television show and the process to having licensed products by Michel Smith Boyd; which also included lunch sponsored by Leftbank Art. The day at AmericasMart concluded with a panel discussion about branding for "2020 & Beyond" with John Lineweaver of Lineweaver Design, Angela Pickens of Develop, and Nakita Pope of Branding Chicks.

We wrapped the designer experience on the third day with a two-hour drive to Sparta (Georgia), where we visited Elm Street Farms, owned and operated by the founders of Currey & Co. This truly was the highlight for myself and many of my colleagues. I'm certain very few of us knew that the company we've all sourced lighting, furnishings, and accessories from were also making an impact in the community in which their farms are located and have made a lasting impression upon the residents...and now all of us. Robert Currey, the founder of Currey & Co., was such an indulgence to listen to. His recount of how it all began for him and his family when they moved to Sparta was powerfully candid and honestly, quite refreshing to hear. I could have listened to him speak for hours. He was the most intriguing host as he led us through the building where they grow mushrooms. I never knew how interesting the farming of mushrooms could be! It really is quite fascinating.

Before my group's tour of the farm, we were wowed with a lecture and demonstration about the growth of bonsai and how to use them in our design projects to create authentic Japanese design tablescapes. Adam Jones, who led this presentation, was flown in from Japan (a small town near Tokyo) and is originally from Connecticut. Talk about traveling a long way to find your dream job! His part of the "experience" was exceptional. Afterward, Leland Warren walked us through a small bit of the farm showing us where different varieties of vegetables are grown and explained the complexities of no-till organic agriculture. I know, trust me, it was more exciting and informative than I just made it sound. The tour of the farm and property was a nostalgic trip back to when I was a child growing up in Arkansas and running through the rows of planted carrots, tomatoes, peas, cabbage, greens...you name it! Oh, how I miss those times and that incredibly healthy food! Long sigh...missing my grandparents.

Kitchen Wanderlust...

When I was growing up, I don't remember kitchens being as stunning as they are today. What I remember is kitchens were yellow, green, or brown, or some combination of all three; oh and even orange. We had a yellow kitchen with yellow appliances. It was cozy, functional, and I enjoyed it. We didn't have a dishwasher, though. Hmmm, that's not entirely true! We had me.

My maternal grandmothers kitchen had green appliances, wood paneled walls, oak cabinetry, a bar (not island), linoleum tiled floors, and a border of vegetables that outlined the perimeter of the kitchen near the ceiling. My paternal grandmother had brown appliances with the same oak cabinetry, but this really cool bar that had two levels where I enjoyed sitting and eating her mouthwatering pork chops, and linoleum flooring. Oh, and back then, the deep freezer had a place in the kitchen, not in the garage, as they were always going to it to take out the frozen hunk of meat that was going to be cooked for dinner that evening; which of course, they began cooking mid morning so that it would be ready by the time we got in from school later that afternoon. I guess I'm rambling on a bit. My apologies!

I must be going through a kitchen wanderlust phase because this area of the home has really been on my mind here as of late. The posting prior to this one is about kitchen appliances and boy do I love those! GE's Cafe Appliance line to be more specific. Ugh, I love the finishes, but then I also love the custom colors of a few more higher end brands as well. Those prices can soar (right out of my price range), but I love to look and lust! The biggest difference between the kitchens of my childhood and the kitchens now, I think, is that we make more of an effort to make them feel like rooms instead of being so utilitarian. Now don't get me wrong, the kitchens back then were decorated, but I guess they were more inclined to be their own separate area, with possibly the exception of an opening to see into the dining room, yet still very separate. Well, now with our homes having more of an open footprint, we must think of our kitchens in a very different way and include them in our design.

Like many of you, I follow various accounts on Instagram and Pinterest who solely feature all things kitchen. From appliances to cabinetry to countertops to backsplashes to sinks to flooring to lighting, and furnishing elements...it's all so exciting and beautiful to lose yourself in the pages and pages of eye candy and that's exactly what happened when I came across this kitchen on the Instagram profile of Blakes London. Gorgeous! The floors had me at HELLO!

Guys, every since GE released their Cafe (Distinct By Design) appliances collection, I have been completely smitten. The collection offers three base color finishes; stainless, matte white, and matte black in ranges, cooktops, refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, microwaves, and hoods. After selecting a base color, you are able to customize your hardware; selecting brushed stainless, brushed black, brushed bronze, or brushed copper. I think this is a wonderful idea and cannot wait to specifiy this collection for my next interior design project. The kitchen is one of the most used rooms in the home, why not customize it to be more stylish and statement making? I'm Thinking I Want To Live In A White House...

I don't know what in the world has come over me, but here lately I've been thinking about painting my home white with a dark charcoal, brown, taupe, or navy trim. Hmmm...I haven't quite worked it all out yet; meaning I've not done a design board with potential white paint color swatches. I'm almost afraid to go down that rabbit hole, as there are so many shades of white to choose from. Ughhh!!! Now the trim; well, that will be easier to pick. I actually have it all worked out in my head, including the landscaping. I think I will do a color sketch of what I am envisioning since I'm feeling so creative right now. Anyhoo, while I continue to get my thoughts (and day dreams) together, you can follow along on my new Pinterest board, The White House.

I really quite like this dark color for the entire home, but I am leaning more towards the reverse. You know, white with dark trim.

Again, another dark home I love, but again the reverse for me!

HAPPY belated BIRTHDAY TO ME!

I've been FIFTY for three weeks now and I'm just as giddy about it today as I was on Saturday, June 22nd. I celebrated the big day in Little Rock, as you may have read in the post before this one. When we returned home, I had this colorful, inflated reminder along with my favorite cake, waiting for me. I think Gillian has a picture of the cake on her phone, as all of this was her idea. My favorite cake ever is the Chantilly cake from the Publix Supermarket bakery. It is so light, fresh, and fruity. I just love it! I'm not big on sweets; only eating cakes, pies, and pastries as rare indulgences rather than frequent treats. I'm not big into icing either, (at all) and this one doesn't have much. I hate those cakes where most of it is icing...ewww!

They sang "Happy Birthday" again, and we toasted once more with another glass of champagne; of which Gillian wanted no parts of, having already had a taste when we celebrated in Little Rock. She discovered the bubbly alcholic beverage will not be her drink of choice for a long time!

I'm so glad Gillian and Noah reminded me to get these images, so I can have them for as long as I want to look at them. Life is good and I am blessed, why not keep the celebration going for another week?!? Cheers to another awesome adventure journey around the sun!

A Well Overdue Re-Cap...

Waiting for the trolley...

Okay, where should I begin? Hmmm...well, last month on June 22nd, I turned FIFTY! What the what? Yeah, my thoughts exactly! Where did all of that time go? Simply put...AWAY; never to return again. But it's all good, because never before have I looked forward with such excitement and anticipation to any other age or time in my life! As with the beginning of anything; be it a new year, new month, career, business, relationship...I can't help but be filled with the hope that new beginnings bring. I'm more grounded in self awareness and my vision is clear. I am ready for the epic adventures this new trip around the sun will bring!

I had never taken the trolley before. It was a beautiful, educational way of seeing a little bit of Little Rock and North Little Rock; which used to be named Argenta.

My family and I spent the last two weeks in Little Rock with parents and grandparents, doing nothing more than whatever it was we wanted to do. We celebrated, laughed, played, hangout, lounged about, shopped, ate, and celebrated some more! My kids got to spend that ever important and impactful time with their grandparents that become memories of a lifetime. They'll forever remember the conversations, the discoveries, and the intimacy that only comes from being in the presence of those who bore your parents, raised them, and are now able to bask in the joy of having them. Seeing them interact with my mom and dad made me miss my grandparents even more and even more grateful for those amazing relationships.

It's really odd to think of summer coming to an end in July, but here in the South (Georgia at least), the end of summer is marked by the preparation for the beginning of school; which occurs in most counties right around the first week of August! Ugh!!! Growing up, I didn't return to school until after Labor Day. That's just not so now, which raises a few questions for me regarding our education system and what our children are learning, and of course, not learning. It's all pretty suspect to me. We do have a month or so left to do as we choose without care for much else other than what to do next.

I hope your summer has been a fun one filled with laughter, family, dear friends, and good food! Until next time...

Summer Kick Off!

My first read for summer 2019, "The Book of Summer." I hope it's a good one!

I suppose I should have posted this on Memorial Day...yeah, probably; but I was busy enjoying the day, as I hope you were as well! The entire Memorial Day weekend was one spent with Pete and the kids, enjoying time that seems to be quickly evaporating the older they get! Noah will be nineteen in eleven days and Gillian turned fourteen on May 15th! Oh my gosh, did I just totally forget to do a post about it? She also graduated from eighth grade in what her school calls a "Moving On" ceremony; which I actually quite like the concept!

I'm enjoying watching my family have a great time at the pool!

With all of that being said...HAPPY JUNE, 2019! Can you believe we are almost half way through the year? I'm pretty pleased with how my year has progressed. I do however, feel much like a farmer, in that I have spent the year thus far, planting seeds and cultivating ideas; honing my writing skills; and nurturing old and new relationships. As I continue to tend the garden, watering and pruning; I fully anticipate a bountiful harvest.

Forties in the Rear View; Fifty Fast Approaching!

I had a doctor's appointment today, as I do every six months with my endocrinologist, to monitor my graves' disease. We've become quite the duo, he and I, as he has been treating me for almost twenty years.

He walks into the room and greets me with the biggest, warmest smile and says, "There she is!" as he has done every visit since the second one (twenty years ago). We begin to discuss my most recent health adventures and I tell him, "Well, I'm growing a couple of whiskers under my chin that enjoy playing peek-a-boo from time to time (so they keep me on my toes), I finally got that muffin top that Pete seems incapable of keeping his hands off (come on mannn!), my thighs have decided it's time for me to work harder NOT smarter, and oh yeah...I have acid reflux and indigestion!"

We both chuckle a bit and he shares his professional opinion laced with human experience; and then says, "Sounds like you're going to bring 50 in with a BANG!"

Pete, Noah, and Gillian had better watch out! I don't know what 50 is suppose to look like or act like, but boy oh boy, I feel the best is yet to come! #june22 #primetime50

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending a book signing, held at Bloomingdale's at Lenox Square here in Atlanta, of a lovely dear friend, Shayla Copas. Shayla's new book Four Season's of Entertaining, just released on Amazon earlier this month, is one that you will want to display on your coffee table and refer to it as inspiration for your very own soiree's! If the cover is any indication, the inside is full of beautiful, vibrant, full-color images that so wonderfully capture each season in entertaining from cinco de mayo to Christmas, Shayla covers it all.

In my opinion, there are no better days than Sundays and rainy days, of which I have the fortune to experience both today. I am sitting in my living room chair, as I type this, gazing out the window at the rain making its decent from heaven. I like to think of rain as Gods way of not only quenching the thirst of much of his creation, but also his way of washing away all things that do not benefit us so that we may start anew. I just love Him, not just because of what He's done for me, but who He is and who I've learned Him to be in the time I've known Him...every since I can remember.

Whether you're a believer or not, take time to reflect on the goodness of your life and those who are in it, because if you are reading this...you are blessed beyond measure!
