Springs coming and we hope very soon !

I had read on Facebook it is predicted that spring will be arriving early this year but they didn't say what date to plan it. But whatever the date we will embrace it! It's been an odd winter when it's been good it's been really nice but the when it hasn't been good we have endured . Those days we just wanted to hibernate .

Many people took hard tumbles on the ice me a included in fact in fell twice in one day . The first call to my daughter was "you need to be so careful "the second call was silence . I can now say I've experienced a fat lip for the first time. I will not be getting lip plumpers !

On the good days it got warm and we played outside while the next day we confused the children making them bundle up tight. Lol when we told them noooo boots or heavy coats they were all smiles "what?!" When we told them bundle up we got "you've gotta be kidding what?!"

It's been fun but it's gotta be done !

The other day I went in search of water....the lake kind :-)

I usually go to Webster Park but during the winter they close the gates so you can't go down by the water. I did notice some people were not deterred by this and parked next to the gate. I was not so brave and there was no spot for me anyway, sooooooo

I thought do I really wanna go to the water over the little bridge in Irondequoit? At first I thought nah I can wait . Then I thought wait?! I'd be waiting till spring, can't wait that long and I do enjoy going over the little bridge that goes into Irondequoit over by Seabreeze. The little bridge is only accessible from November till April then it is closed so the boats can go back and forth from the bay into the lake. So with camera phone in the cup holder of the car , thought I was gonna say in my hand didn't you, that would be illegal :-) I went over the little bridge to find water.. The sun was shining and it was 50 something degrees a day you just can't let go by, A tad cold to go to the beach , I don't fish but I do enjoy taking lots of pics.

I found other people with the same idea.

this one was taken at Sandbar Park just before the bridge , I came down the hill thought I would gracefully (I'm not graceful, I just think it might happen) there was a truck parked in the parking lot and I went to skip over a patch of mud. Landed my right foot straight into it slid , caught myself and pretended it didn't really happen. The whole time thinking wow I must have looked stupid. Got back into my car the guy was on his cell phone, he didn't notice or care. I probably could have been laying on the ground in the middle of the mud and he wouldn't even have noticed. It's fun though to spin a yarn, make up your own stories as life happens.,

this one I thought would be prettier then it was, in real life it was pretty but maybe in comparison to the bright , sunny ones it's a winter shot.

I did enjoy myself , good thing I took them when I did though, the weather turned much colder after that day. I may have to wait a few months for it to be warm enough to take some pics without freezing while I'm out there.

I always get excited about the new year, but for some reason for 2016 I just wasn't as prepared as I should have been. I think because I was scrambling more, trying to spiral from the money issues I had I was trying to survive more then welcoming the new year. I had a pretty good year in 2016 had it's ups and downs a great new budding relationship , and a year of figuring things out,

But this year I am ready! I'm going to make up my bucket list and cross off things as I go . My daughter and I went to Barnes and Nobel yesterday got our new calendars and planners so we can plan plan plan.... Last year I tried to use a notebook as a journal, for me that just doesn't work I need an official book type of journal to record all of the things I intend to do on my bucket list and actually remember how much I had while doing things as I check them off.

I have big hopes for this year, write down my list of goals not resolutions, seems as though resolutions are meant to be broken... my goals which I will write down in the front of my journal to remind me . My bucket list will be in there as well.

How do you plan for your exciting new year? What kinds of things will you add to your bucket list and your goals? we can all learn from each other.

I am taking down all of the Santa decorations that I have around my apartment, in their places I am adding beachy things......I'm thinking since my tree is not large and its artificial I may keep it up since I enjoy it being there with the lights go to a craft store and find hearts to hang on it... then shamrocks ..easter eggs ,......star fish and shells ...... in the fall leaves and ring me back to Christmas again, whatcha think...

I am making my first spinach ..mushroom quiche of the new year..... paying my rent soon and early...dropping off books at the library early.....I'm going to try to pay things early when I can , save some money for emergencies and have fun this year...

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Playdough

One of my favorite things to do as a child was creating with playdough. Now that I have kids I’ve noticed the quality of store bought playdough is decreasing while the price is increasing. I did some experimenting to find the perfect recipe and wanted to share this homemade playdough with you!

Since pumpkin is extremely popular this fall I thought I would incorporate that into the recipe! This workable edible pumpkin spice playdough will keep the kidlets busy for hours! Have fun creating.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Playdough

Ingredients

1 cup all purpose flour
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice (I used McCormick brand)
orange soft gel food coloring paste (you can also use food coloring)
1 cup water
1 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar (this helps keep your play-doh from going rancid)
2 tablespoons cooking oil (I used vegetable oil)

Instructions

Add flour, pumpkin spice, cinnamon, salt, cram of tartar, and oil into a medium sauce pan. In a bowl add the water and orange soft gel food coloring (or regular food coloring) and mix well.
In a small bowl (I used my large measuring cup) mix water with food coloring paste (or regular food coloring if that is what you are using).
Slowly add colored water into the sauce pan with the other ingredients and mix well. Cook on medium heat for 3-4 minutes. It will begin to pull away from the sides of the pan and form a ball in the center of your pan. Remove from pot and cool. Once your dough is cool knead it all up and smell!!! The aroma is wonderful.....if you want the smell stronger just add more pumpkin spice or cinnamon and knead it again.
Grab your rolling pin, cookie cutters, pie pan or anything else you can think of and sit down with your kids and have a great time playing with your own Edible pumpkin Spice Play-dough and don't forget to sniff!!

I first went into the store found the size and style I like so now I can shop online for them. The sale ends on Monday so hurry in today or pop online to chose your seven , always fun to have a new pair to wear . Out with the old in with the new!

Good Morning :-) Fall is coming can you feel it? Lets make it fun

Since the end of summer is coming no we wish it weren't true but since we can't stop falls arrival we can embrace it. Take it by surprise and welcome it , fall won't know what to do. Of course welcoming winter is a completely different situation which we will have to work on ....much later one change at a time. :-)

How will we welcome fall, we've got to come up with something quickly since there is only one more week of August and it's only three days. Many towns are saying goodbye to summer by having fun events ,yesterday Casey Park had a bouncy house, food trucks and events during the day then a movie at the end of the celebration and of course you can't have a celebration without fireworks.

Casey Park is a very pretty park so you could add it to your welcoming fall schedule. The weather will begin getting cooler , if you enjoy kayaking you can rent them and paddle up the water and enjoy nature, very relaxing. There is a trail into the woods that is very pretty and will be awesome in the fall to experience.. If you have children they can play on the swings, there is a large play area and playing on the beach is always fun until the snow covers it up.

Fall is nice because it's more relaxing, summer comes and we all start racing to do everything we haven't done in the winter months. Everyone has weddings and picnics , family events, we all feel we have to race to amusement parks and festivals every weekend. Which of course if you are going to do them you really only have a few short months to go so yes we are in a hurry to do everything. For some reason families don't plan picnics in the fall, it could be done and it's not so hot possibly could be more enjoyable. Lets add that to our list of things to do during the fall. Take the family on a picnic in the park in September , dress more warmly instead of sitting on the ground put a table cloth on the picnic table and enjoy the changing leaves . Parks are usually open till it snows and sometimes even then if the snow isn't to deep. Perhaps that is our rush we are afraid everything is going to end on August 30th, nah there's plenty of time to keep having fun. Just bring a jacket or a sweater.

Going for walks in the woods will be more enjoyable, not so hot and hopefully less buggy. If you live in the Rochester area Greece has a nice park with a pretty trail that goes thru the woods, there is an entrance on Fetzner and English has another one. Webster Park has many trails to enjoy some more challenging then others so everyone can go.

In Webster Park there are:

Hojack Trail which seems very long probably for the more advanced hiker
Vosburg Hollow Nature Trail
Gosnell Woods Preserve
Whiting Road Nature Preserve
and all thru the park itself you would park at the main entrance on Holt road or if you wanted to sit by the water afterward you would park in the parking lot by the water then go across the little and the path that goes under the underpass odd to have cars over the top of you. :-) and you get to the woody meat of the park itself, paths are everywhere. You can enjoy the trees which in the fall will be gorgeous the sound of leaves crunching under your feet just feels like fall and the woods go together.. If you are very clever take an apple to much on while you sit down and enjoy the nature that is surrounding you. Fall is a time where we get to still have fun but slow down.

We can celebrate fall by going on the leaf peeping boat tours that are sprinkled around Rochester, now is the time of everything pumpkin! Pumpkin bread, pumpkin pancakes, drinks, ice cream , frozen custard with chocolate sprinkles if a big favorite of my daughter and I. Pick up some custard at Abbotts on Empire then head to Webster park, enjoy the view , the company and the great taste of pumpkin.

Also North Ponds in Webster is an awesome place to go for a mile walk on a paved path. The water is always pretty but in the fall with the reflection of the colored leaves, spectacular! Very close to North Ponds which is on 104 but can be reached by going down North Ave or 250 is the Bird Sanctuary Trail . There are also the Webster Recreation Center and Chiyoda Trails. Off Schlegal Road you will find Kent Park and the Arboretum Trails which are very pretty as well.

The farmers markets are awesome all kinds of fresh fruits and veggies which end in October, I will miss them a lot . I have decided to buy as many as my budget and freezer can allow. I've washed blueberries and popped them into containers to freeze it'll be awesome to have fresh blueberries in the middle of January. Cut up zucchini , yellow squash, all kinds of squash have a variety . You can buy fresh corn on the cob cook it cut it off the cob and freeze that too. Why I say as much as my freezer can take. With the apples make home made applesauce , you'll know what's going into it. Even pumpkin, when the pumpkins come out buy the pie pumpkins take the insides out roast the seeds mmm, then cut up the pumpkin into small pieces pop into a pan cook take the outside off and freeze pumpkin is very good for you and your dog. Then when you want to make a pie or bread you have fresh ingredients in your freezer just waiting for you. Obviously I need a bigger freezer.

A gorgeous hot weekend filled with time at the lake

It was a great weekend filled with time at the lake. After work in the morning I went to the lake just to enjoy it not as many people so it was easier for me to take lots of pics.

My daughter came over later in the day and wanted to spend time at the lake but this time we had stopped at Wendy's so we had food to go along with our visit.

Sunday came along , another very hot day I decided to take Oscar my little maltese with me thinking he would enjoy being out of the apartment. I took a book and biscuits and a toy for him so we could sit by the water a while and enjoy the sounds of the water coming to shore. The visit was a little different then expected. Oscar thought he was going to die because he felt a little warm so he spent his visit up and down from the seat to the floor then to the seat and to sitting on my lap. Panting the whole time. A car with an older couple pulled up next to me while I had my book out, of course she was not a pleasant sort of lady and pulled in fighting with whomever was on the other side of the car. Videos of the water were of course out of the question. We were surrounded by lots of people and because I had Oscar with me and he's not fond of being out at the lake I had to take pics from inside the car. Of course this meant I had a lot of pics of people I don't know in my pics with pics of Oscar. Not sure if he enjoyed his time by the lake but I know I certainly did just had to adjust to all the other people who were enjoying it with me.

Happy June the nice weather has finally come

After work Saturday morning I headed down to the lake at the park, and had lots of company who

also enjoyed the water and the nice weather. I enjoy walking along the water for exercise and taking

pictures because it's fun. A couple of very wet retrievers wanted to be friendly, normal sure I'll pet

the dog but there were two and soaking wet. I saw a black animal that looked like a weasel but I

have learned it's the cousin it lives in between the rocks builds a nest and likes to eat fish. Always

fun to learn new things. There were the usual people skipping rocks some better then others, a lady

laying on rocks sunning herself perhaps a chair would have been more comfy, an idea for next time.

A man fishing with his family , kids were a little noisy didn't see anything in his bucket :-) sea gulls

were gorgeous flying in the air then swooping down to get a fish and flying straight up in the air

again. A man calmly put his kayak in the water and gently paddled across the water , not to far from

shore you could hear the sound of a jet ski and a speed boat slamming against the water. I took lots

of pictures and videos to share then it was back home to actually get somethings accomplished.

I always enjoy my time at the lake, I've got some things to share with you...enjoy :-)

I am so done with winter and it's been a good winter or it had been until it threw a lot of scary snow at us. As much as I had myself totally believing yesterday was the 29th of February and I was just that much closer to March spring and daylights saving time I am relieved there is still another week to February... Another paycheck with which to pay the rent that I have been worrying about paying and how to time it perfectly because I needed that first paycheck of March to pay it and it's due the 5th lol which is the day after my payday. March will come in another week and we will be sooooo happy that spring is finally on the way .We will again feel warm sunshine on our faces, and eventually the huge bulky coats and boots can be put away... goodbye to hibernating tendencies that we can't have and hello to fun .. and sun.

Santa came to work the other day some of the kids loved Santa while some just didn't want anything to do with him

at work they give me a hard time about glitter, they have obviously been to New York City

I took Christmas Eve Day off , got away from the kids and the glitter which is on every project that we do . I must say I couldn't have taken a better day off, the weather was 68 and totally awesome, the sales were also awesome 70% off everything in Old Navy. I spent the day shopping and just chilling out, it was really nice.

Oscar relaxed and just waited for me to do whatever I was gonna do next.

The presentation at the church was beautiful a nice way to spend Christmas Eve.

The big day finally arrived, Oscar opened his presents

He liked the dental greenies the best :-)

Then off to my daughters for a few hours then of course back to the lake to enjoy the wonderful weather.

A trip to the Sterling Renaissance Festival

A couple of weekends ago I went to the Sterling Renaissance Festival with my son Michael. This weekend is the last weekend for it but next year and at Halloween plan to make a trip out to Sterling and experience what many have for years.

You arrive in a whimsical land that takes you away from the hustle and bustle of your daily world. The festival is nestled in a forest with trees and paths everywhere .There are things happening everywhere so you will never get bored, there are shows, people dressed up in the time of the Renaissance .

I was amazed at the village, the houses fit the people who do their crafts in them.

There was a girl who made candles little mushrooms with sweet faces and elves just to mention a few. Her talent was amazing.

There was a glass blower who made glass animals I really liked the turtles.

The buildings were so quaint it was like walking thru the pages in a history book

There were competitions some I didn't understand but it was a different time.

There were beautiful horses of war

and of course the people from another time riding them. Our time in history old meets new.

There were many shows

man power chair swings , kids yelled like it was Darien Lake.

The whip master

girls on ribbons

and even someone I know..

A man who told stories backwards and or sideways.. and I kept up..I work with kids..

It was a great way to spend an afternoon..

In the middle of summer the last thing we want to think about is winter, but many of us have a difficult time getting thru the longest cold season of the year. Better to be prepared and have the things you need to help you get by then enjoy the sun surf and seaside.

FEELING S.A.D.? 5 NATURAL REMEDIES FOR THE WINTER BLUES

Soon after the excitement of the holidays is over I often find myself facing the rest of the winter with a feeling of dread and a bit of melancholy. Although I’ve never actually been diagnosed with SAD, or Seasonal Affective Disorder, sometimes I feel like I might suffer from a touch of it.

Feelings of sadness, lack of focus, fatigue, and moodiness around this time of year are all common symptoms of SAD. Mild forms of SAD are believed to affect as many as 20% of people in the United States.

Experts aren’t sure what causes SAD, but they think it may be caused by a lack of sunlight. Lack of light may upset your sleep-wake cycle and other circadian rhythms, and it may cause problems with a brain chemical called serotonin that affects mood.

Fortunately, some SAD symptoms can be minimized by doing a few simple things.

1. Get your daily dose of sunlight.

Get as much natural light as possible between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Get outside and go for a walk, or at least sit by a window. Open the curtains, pull up the shades, and spend time in the sunniest room in the house.

Some people might be helped by special “light therapy boxes.” Talk with your doctor about whether you should try one of these devices.

2. Eat foods containing tryptophan.

Many who suffer from seasonal depression may experience decreased levels of serotonin, the brain’s neurotransmitter. Tryptophan is an amino acid known to be a precursor of serotonin, so eating foods that contain it may increase your body’s production of serotonin, thus making you feel better. Foods rich in tryptophan include turkey, spinach, bananas, seafood, milk, and egg whites.

3. Limit alcohol and caffeine.

Alcohol is a depressant that can lower your mood, and caffeine usually leaves you anxious. They might make you feel better short-term but these can lead to mood swings that can deepen your depression.

4. Get moving.

Getting your heart rate up and breaking a sweat is a sure way to raise serotonin and endorphin levels – this is especially beneficial if you do it in the morning. Even better, exercise in the sun or near a sunny window.

You can also keep your body’s clock in sync by rising and retiring at the same time each day, even on weekends or days off from work.

5. Use essential oils.

Essential oils can be powerful mood-lifters and are perfect to help combat the winter blues and re-energize you, especially when combined with the above treatments.

This is the time of year to use your citrus essential oils.

Wild Orange, Tangerine, Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, and Bergamot are all energizing and mood elevating oils that help uplift the spirits when the winter blues set in.

Here are some of the ways I like to use these uplifting oils:

Diffuse them in the air.
Add them to my bath water.
Rub them on the bottom of my feet.
Put 2-3 drops in my hands and rub them together, cup my hands over my nose and b r e a t h e d e e p l y!
Put 3-4 drops in my water bottle.

Other easy ways to add citrus oils to your daily routine are adding a drop or two to your dish water when you are washing dishes, keeping a citrus oil in your purse to use as a hand-sanitizer (they are powerful natural germ killers), mixing a few drops of lemon, lime,grapefruit or wild orange with water in a glass spray bottle and using it to clean and sanitize surfaces or spray in the air to neutralize odors.

Be sure to seek guidance from a professional if the feelings of depression become overwhelming. If they are not severe, however, some of the natural home remedies listed above may provide some welcome relief over the next couple of months!

After some research, we found a simple vinegar rinse recipe from our friend The Krazy Coupon Lady that seems to improve the life of strawberries by a few days. Plus, one of my favorite gadgets are the great OXO GreenSaver Produce Keepers that use charcoal packets and a lifted inside container to ensure produce freshness. We also reached out to readers on Reality Checker Central to get their ideas. Here are a few of their smart strategies to keep berries fresh:

1. Freshen with the power of citrus. “Spray berries with lemon juice—the citrus kills the mold and the berries will retain their flavor. I also freeze them in small batches for use later. Lie them flat, not touching to freeze, then when frozen place in a Ziploc bag in freezer.” —Claudia M.

2. Make sure they’re super-dry. “Put them in a Debbie Meyer Green Container. After they have been washed and are bone dry, they last a long time. You could freeze them in that container, too, but mine last two weeks just in the container.” —Becky C.

3. Use the right container. “I put them in a Tupperware Green container made for keeping fruit fresher. I do not rinse them until ready to eat.” —Janie M.

4. Prevent mold. “I have a berry keeper and I wait to wash just before eating, to keep them drier and to keep away mold and fungus.” —Cheryl B.
