At the end of last golf season, I was playing good golf (for me). I was particularly pleased with my drive at the end of the year. I was consistently driving the ball a straight 260-300 yards. My first golf outing of the this year reminded me why consistency is the key to this game. I was hitting a terrible slice the first 9 holes of the round. As a matter of fact, I sliced one ball severely to the right and heard a loud crash. As I approached the area where my ball had sliced, I noticed an elderly gentleman standing in his backyard with a less than pleasant look on his face.

The guy playing with me had to hit before we arrived to this spot so I had a moment to decide whether I should face the conflict or flee to the other side of the fairway. I opted for facing the conflict knowing I should not run from the consequences of my flagrant shot. What I did not know until I arrived on the scene was that my ball had actually gone through a double pain glass window in their house and landed on their kitchen table.

What I also did not know until my arrival was that is was a 90+ year old couple. They were visibly upset and did not have the energy or strength to deal with this mess. They asked me to clean up the glass in their house and I begrudgingly obliged. In my mind, I was having the "you live on a golf course for crying out loud" struggle but I tried to be nice in the moment and do the right thing.

When all was said and done, I spent about 20 minutes getting it all worked out and provided my fellow golfers a few good laughs before I kicked their butt and went home with the lowest score. I also avoided losing a golf ball - although the elderly couple would not let me hit the ball out of their kitchen to avoid the penalty stroke.

Still not sure who is responsible to pay for the window. My insurance insists their home owner's should take care of it. They insist mine should. May have to come out of my own pocket. Another reason golf can be an expensive hobby.

Well at least it was a beautiful day!

Post-weekend

Beautiful weekend in Vegas. 70 degrees and gorgeous. Here are some random thoughts from the weekend...

- Had lunch with my two youngest at school on Friday. Fun time hanging with about 20 second graders from all walks of life.
- Zac and I stopped by the pet store after lunch and picked up 5 feeders for Surge. He devoured them in about 5 seconds. He is vicious.
- Friday night we hung out with some of our remaining launch team. A couple of us went to the movies. The men saw Rambo and the women saw the Matthew McConaughey chic flick.
- Rambo is one of the bloodiest movies I have ever seen. I have never seen so many people die in so many different ways. Wow.
- If you are a man, you have to love the Rambo movies at some level. Seeing Rambo shoot an arrow through someone's skull is exhilarating in some weird way. A lot of incredible CGs for a single movie.
- Saturday a group cleaned out our church storage units. I stopped by for a few moments. Tons of memories in that unit. It was cool to see how far we have come and a little sad to throw out some set design stuff that generate memories of our early years.
- Took our kids to the park on Saturday afternoon. Slammed with people. 70 degrees and beautiful brings the people out in a city with incredible parks and no yards.
- Gotta love living in Vegas this time of the year.
- Practiced some Guitar Hero on Saturday evening and then just hung out and watched a movie with my wife.
- Sunday was another great day at Grace Point. We continued our series on spiritual development. This has been a good series for us and a good reminder to our Christians that spiritual growth and development is about serving and giving as well as getting.
- We are consistently around 750 now which is cool.
- We have been doing some stupid games at the beginning of our service to illustrate the growth stage we are talking about. Yesterday we were focusing on adolescence so we had a cheeseburger eating contest. It was fun.
- Our band was off the hook yesterday.
- New favorite worship song at GP: Hillsong United's From the Inside Out. Incredible song.
- I had some soapbox moments yesterday talking about the tendency of Christians to focus on "being fed" instead of learning to feed themselves and feed others.
- Five20 is going well. We are about to do some major marketing which should take us to a new level. Both the bartender and sound guy are asking a ton of spiritual questions. I have my God sites on them.
- My Heels pulled one out yesterday. Undeserving of the win but we will take it.
- Leave for Evolve next Sunday where I will lead a breakout on bringing the gospel to a culture like Vegas. I have most of the talk finished. It should be a fun breakout for those interested.

Out. I am actually taking an afternoon off and playing golf. First non-Saturday off in a long time. I could not pass up on the opportunity.

Googling

I still get amused on occasion at some of the word searches that point people to my blog. What stands out to me in this verse is the concept that we are "being" saved. I think primarily in black & white terms. I am a rational, logical thinker. There is not much middle ground for me. Add to this reality the fact that I grew up in church circles that talked exclusively in terms of saved & lost and this verse throws me for a bit of a loop. What does it mean that we are "being" saved? Paul seems to speak in terms of a process and not in black & white terms.

At the same time, this verse makes absolute sense to me in light of my experiences following Christ. I have said before that the longer I am a follower of Jesus the deeper I recognize my own depravity. I became a believer as a child. There is no way I recognized or acknowledged the depth of my depravity at that stage in my life. As I grew in my faith and became older, I began to realize a couple of things: 1) Salvation is so about God and not about me & 2) I really am a depraved person who depends 100% on grace.

I am in the process of being saved because the gospel continues to work on me daily. I need the gospel now more than ever. I depend on it now more than ever. It is shaping me now more than ever. At times I question whether God could use some one like me. I question why God chooses the foolish things (and people) to proclaim his message. I question why God uses a cracked and broken vessel like me to tell others about the gospel. I know my flaws. I know my weaknesses. I know my sinfulness. I know my tendencies. I know my Romans 7 ways. I know my sins. I know how depraved I can be. I know how my heart is prone to wander - how I am prone to leave the God I love. And yet God uses me in spite of me.

Being Saved? You better believe it. It is a continual process instigated by the God of grace who will one day complete what He has begun.

Heels lose

Tyler Hansbrough's 28 points and 18 rebounds were not enough for the Tarheels last night. We proved once again that we MUST have Ty Lawson to win. Losing Bobby Frasor, our backup point guard, for the year does not give us the luxury of missing Lawson for even one game. I am not one to make excuses but his absence was definitely the deciding factor in the game - that and the fact Duke could not miss a three all night. Hansbrough was basically our only threat the entire night. He is a great player but we can't depend solely on him to win games.

Look forward to the rematch when Lawson is back and healthy.

I HATE losing to Duke! I live with the weight that the guarantee of our "facilities" is always in the hands of someone else - someone who usually has no buy-in to what you are doing. You live with the constant "what if" pressure - what if they simply don't want us in their facility any longer. One disgruntled teacher, a change in administration (which seems to happen every year in Vegas), a principal who wants to protect their facility, a costly mistake by a volunteer ~ any of these scenarios can alter your security as a church using someone else's facilities.

Add to this dilemma the fact that you are in a brand new community that has limited facilities to begin with and you live with the constant pressure of "having your own place" and yet the reality that it is virtually impossible to do so at this time.

What do you do when you are a church of 750 people and yet you are totally dependent on the willingness of someone who has no vested interest in your church? You depend on God like crazy. You do everything in your power to maintain a healthy relationship with the administration and school. You constantly look and pray and think. And at the end of the day, you trust that God will provide what you need when you need it.

Being portable is a challenge. It stretches your faith. It frustrates the life out of you at times. And yet it is another way that God has opened the door for his gospel to be advanced.

Post-weekend Purge

- Friday we went to scout a location for an upcoming video shoot we are having at Lake Mead. In the process of trying to decide if a certain part of the ground was secure, I totally fell in the lake. It was funny for all those there to see the fiasco.
- Our Easter series video is going to be great. More to come.
- Saturday I hung out with my buddy Zac. We spent an ungodly amount of time playing Mario Galaxy. He is as competitive as his dad.
- My girls and their mom, along with a billion other little girls, went to see the Hannah Montana concert "movie". They loved it. Billy Ray has hit the jackpot.
- It is okay for me to say I want to strangle the Jonas Brothers? Sorry.
- For some reason, I was dog tired this weekend. I am glad I got to crash on Saturday.
- We started a new series on Sunday called Arrested Development. It is on spiritual growth. I am really looking forward to teaching this series and stretching our people on what spiritual growth is and is not.
- We were a bit down yesterday. Rainy in Vegas for a second weekend in a row.
- Hung out at the Ice House last night for the Super Bowl. What a game!
- As a die-hard Cowboys fan, I had a hard time pulling for the Giants but I did not want to see the Patriots go undefeated. Way to go Giants. At least I can say my Boys beat the Super Bowl champs more than they beat us this year.
- For those who saw the game, only three words: what a catch!
- The only bad thing about the Pats losing is we still have to hear about the stupid Dolphins who played in an era where going undefeated was a lot less of an accomplishment (in my opinion). The Patriots loss proves again that pro sports is at a whole new level in this era.

Enough for now...

Lost does it again

Lost started the new season with a bang. I love Monty Python type humor so it was my speed.
- Tourists get a puzzled look on their face when you tell them you are a pastor in Las Vegas.
- The Wynn is an incredibly nice resort/casino. It is amazing how much money they spend on those places. Definitely not built on winners.
- On Saturday I spent the morning with our small group leaders delivering food boxes to needy families through one of or partners - City Mission of Las Vegas. Great organization. Great day.
- Serving is a part of our DNA as a church. I love it.
- Saturday afternoon we went to my oldest daughter's music/acting recital. Her part was good but the 2+ hours of other performances got a little long. In the process, I wore out my phone texting and joking like a teenager. Not sure it was proper but it kept my mind occupied.
- I can not sit still if I am not speaking or on stage.
- Our big Easter plans have taken a slight hit this weekend but that's okay - we will make it happen effectively even if it is not the level of our original plan.
- Sunday was another big day at Grace Point with over 820 people in our weekend gatherings. Our band was blowing it up on Sunday.
- We finished Fight Club. Definitely one of the most impacting series we have done.
- New series next Sunday - Arrested Development.
- Five20 went well last night. We are still trying to find our groove. Our Five20 band is unbelievable. They have a freedom to play that is missing from normal church services and they are just letting it rip. I love it.
- I think Five20 could really make a huge impact.
- I have just settled in my mind that most of my life will be lived under a certain amount of pressure and stress. I am too driven to live any other way.
- In case you did not know, the Cowboys are NOT in the Super Bowl.

Have a great one...

Hook me up

I have talked about this concept for a long time and finally it has happened. Here are some general happenings:

- Spent time with some GP people on both Friday and Saturday nights. Always fun to get to know the people God sends to Grace Point at a deeper level.
- Took my oldest Kayleigh on a daddy-daughter outing on Saturday morning. She is a sweetheart. I can't believe she is 10.
- The Heels lost their first game on Saturday afternoon. Not surprised based on their previous games.
- For a creative element on Sunday, we had a couple have a Guitar Hero battle on stage. We projected the game onto the big screens. Really neat creative addition.
- I spoke on marriage on Sunday. A lot of positive feedback.
- Giants-Patriots Super Bowl ... does anyone outside Boston & NY care about this game?
- Five20 went well last night. We are still refining some things for sure.
- Hard to believe that Easter is about 8 weeks away.
- Major brainstorming for Easter this week. Hope to have a lot done by Friday.
- Our Easter creative is going to be awesome.
- We have grown almost 100 people in January!
- Surge committed his first homicide this weekend - he killed one of my other fish - a fairy fish - ironic name for the first victim.

Back to work...

Vegas Baby!

There are a lot of reasons that church planters refuse to come to a place like Las Vegas but let me share a positive reason with you: we never have to worry about canceling our services due to weather! I have been reading how a lot of churches all over the Southeast are canceling their church services due to the snowy/icy weather. Today in Las Vegas it will be about 60 degrees and we will have an awesome day at church.

I can't wait for today. I woke up at 2 and finally just got up at 3. I never sleep on Saturday nights but I am especially excited about today for some reason. Great message topic. Introducing a new song today that is one of my faves at the moment. New areas for our kids and youth. Five20 tonight. Awesome week of planning ahead for Easter. And now you know why I can't sleep!

On a sad note, my Heels suffered their first loss of the season. Not surprised. It has been coming for a couple of weeks.

Have a great Sunday - hope all you cancelers enjoy your day off.

Surge Feast

Just finished feeding four feeder fish to my fish Surge. It is a western that stars Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. Very good movie. Crowe plays a vicious outlaw known for robbing stages and murdering innocent people. As the movie progresses, he is captured in a small town and is to be taken to Yuma where he will board a 3:10 train to prison. Bale plays a rancher who joins the group who is escorting Crowe to Yuma in order to make some much needed money. The movie is basically the events that transpire on the journey to Yuma as Crowe's posse of bandits try and set him free before he makes it to Yuma to board the train that will take their leader to lockup. Along the way, Crowe earns a deep respect for Christian Bale's character and in the end helps Bale get him to the train before Bale is shot and killed by Crowe's posse. What happens next in the movie blew my mind as a leader.

After Crowe's posse traveled many miles and risked their lives (some of them giving their lives) to save their leader, he turns on them and shoots them down in the street. They only did what they thought he wanted them to do - set him free at whatever cost necessary - and yet he turns on his own men and kills them. One primary character in the posse who defended Crowe on more than one occasion and prevented the gang from turning on Crowe is shot point blank in the chest by Crowe for only doing what he believed his leader wanted him to do.

When the movie ended, I was ticked. I know it is only a movie but there is something in me that gets disturbed by this type of disloyalty and betrayal. If you ask my staff what is the primary thing I expect from them, I guarantee you they will say loyalty. I preach it. I expect it. I live it. My staff is loyal to me and I am loyal to them. We have each other's backs. We don't allow things to divide us. We stick together. We defend each other. We watch out for one another. We protect one another. The idea that Crowe, as the leader, turned on his own men troubled me. For me, it was like a pastor turning on his staff and shooting them down in cold blood.

If we have a problem arise among our staff, guess what we do? We take care of it in house. We don't shoot each other down in the street. We don't criticize each other to other people. We don't gossip about each other or complain about other staff members outside of our internal meetings. We don't allow problems to fester. We don't allow issues to go unchecked. We are a united front. We believe and practice loyalty.

Why is this so important? Because too much is at stake. We are loyal to each other because the kingdom is too important. No house divided against itself will stand. We do not practice blind loyalty without accountability. But we do practice informed loyalty - meaning if there is a question or issue, we will seek information from the right party and resolve it.

I have talked about 3:10 to Yuma for 2 days. I told a hundred people how Crowe's character turned on his own men. It irked me. You know why? Because loyalty is a must. Without it, we are nothing more than gang members shooting each other down in the street.

Five20 Pix

Here are a few pictures from Five20 - our newest venue which meets in a bar.

I love this shot ... our Five20 logo right over the bar.

Five20 invite cards fill the tables at the Ice House.

Ice House Lounge - our newest venue location in Las Vegas

My beautiful bride Starla came out for the launch

Side view of inside the Ice House. I love it. I love the fact I was able to stand up last night in a bar and say "we are not ashamed of the gospel. We believe it can change your life and change our city." I have also been asked the normal "watering down the gospel" type questions which trips me out. I am more reliant upon the gospel than ever and have no desire to water it down. We are straightforward with it. It is not a cool new venue that will transform lives. It is only the gospel. I would be a fool to try and water it down. I will let it stand on its own. It is the power of God unto salvation.

Post-weekend Purge

A lot of mind dump stuff about this weekend...

- The staff shot pictures for our soon coming website on Friday night. It was fun.
- Friday night Starla and I watched 3:10 to Yuma. Good movie. Ending drove me nuts. I am going to blog about it later.
- Our kids were watching Herbie Fully Loaded upstairs while we were watching a movie downstairs. The cute and innocent Lindsay Lohan was in that movie. Wow has her life taken a turn.
- Zac has a little 2 cylinder motorcycle that the kids rode on Saturday. It is a blast.
- I got my new fish on Saturday. He is a Surge Wrasse and he is awesome. He is a spaz and terrorizes the other fish. I have to feed him "feeder" fish once a week. He comes to me via the Mirage where he was expelled for his troubles.
- Sunday was another great day at GP. High attendance. Smooth set-up. Awesome music. Message that connected on all cylinders. Overall great day.
- Five20 launched Sunday night with about 75 in attendance. We were thrilled considering we have done basically no advertising and UNLV is not even in session yet and we were in a bar. There were many there that were new and I had never seen before. I truly think Five20 is going to blow up.
- Our Five20 band is off the hook. I was shocked.
- The Cowboys are OUT of the playoffs. Unbelievable. Don't get me started on the many reasons why they stunk so severely yesterday. I was afraid of playing the Giants for a 3rd time and how horrible we played our last few games. It all caught up to us and now we will be sitting home while the NYGiants advance to Green Bay.
- At this point my only desire is for anyone to win the Super Bowl except the Patriots.
- The Green Bay game on Saturday was awesome. Football in the blinding snow. That was cool.
- Preaching 3 times on Sunday is exhausting.
- I am going to thrive on adrenaline for a while on Sundays.
- It seems my life is basically meetings and preparing to teach.
- Still eating sunflower seeds. My addiction might last longer than I wanted.

Five20 pictures to come...

Five20

Until recently, I didn't realize Five+20=No Sleep.

It all starts this Sunday night.

Sunflower seeds

For a time in my life, I ate sunflower seeds like crazy. Not in recent years. However for Christmas someone gave me a bag of David's. I brought them to the office today and cannot keep them out of my mouth. I have no idea if they are good or bad for you or if having a bunch of sunflower seeds in your mouth does anything other than make you look like a redneck. Either way, I have been addicted again today. Hopefully this one bag will suffice and I can go back to my real fix - coffee.

Eat. Spit. It is the only time in his life he will sit still for more than 10 seconds.
- Zac and I have been re-watching the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Great movies.
- Spent some much needed hubby-wife time this weekend as well.
- I have felt like I am drowning for a few weeks now. Feel better today.
- We started a new series called Fight Club on Sunday. It went awesome.
- Our set design is incredible.
- I spoke from the heart on Sunday as God has recently taught me what I taught our people. It is always those messages that seem to connect the clearest and deepest.
- I talked about fighting for your faith on Sunday from Mark 9 and the story of the father who cried out "Lord I want to believe. Help my unbelief."
- Five20 Launch Team meeting last night. It went great. We had about 20 or so there. It all starts next Sunday night!
- We had a bit of a scare last night with the bar we are using. They are now closed on Sundays which affects us some. But the good news is that we will be able to take over the entire downstairs - which has a huge stage, cool vibe, etc. It is going to take us to a new level instantly.
- God is so in control.
- This is the first week I feel like we are "back in the saddle" from the holidays.
- Giants vs Cowboys: round 3. Scares me a little.
- Tarheels survived - my TiVo cut off with 13 seconds left in OT so I missed the final shot.
- Thank God for Sportscenter.
- Busy week ahead. 2 messages to prepare!
- The Evolve conference is quickly approaching. I am looking forward to it and am preparing a great talk. I am taking 3 of my staff with me.
- My schedule is going to have to get TIGHT! Focus is essential.
- New website is about to be up. It is going to be sharp.

That's all for now...
