So what really is aromatherapy? Why do we use it and where does it come from......
Definition
Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of plant-derived, aromatic essential oils to promote physical and psychological well-being. It is sometimes used in combination with massage and other therapeutic techniques as part of a holistic treatment approach.
Purpose
Aromatherapy offers diverse physical and psychological benefits, depending on the essential oil or oil combination and method of application used. Some common medicinal properties of essential oils used in aromatherapy include: analgesic, antimicrobial, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, astringent, sedative, antispasmodic, expectorant, diuretic, and sedative. Essential oils are used to treat a wide range of symptoms and conditions, including, but not limited to, gastrointestinal discomfort, skin conditions, menstrual pain and irregularities, stress-related conditions, mood disorders, circulatory problems, respiratory infections, and wounds.
Origins
Aromatic plants have been employed for their healing, preservative, and pleasurable qualities throughout recorded history in both the East and West. As early as 1500 B.C. the ancient Egyptians used waters, oils, incense, resins, and ointments scented with botanicals for their religious ceremonies.

There is evidence that the Chinese may have recognized the benefits of herbal and aromatic remedies much earlier than this. The oldest known herbal text, Shen Nung's Pen Ts'ao (c. 2700-3000 B.C.) catalogs over 200 botanicals. Ayurveda, a practice of traditional Indian medicine that dates back over 2,500 years, also used aromatic herbs for treatment.

The Romans were well-known for their use of fragrances. They bathed with botanicals and integrated them into their state and religious rituals. So did the Greeks, with a growing awareness of the medicinal properties of herbs, as well. Greek physician and surgeon Pedanios Dioscorides, whose renown herbal text De Materia Medica (60 A.D.) was the standard textbook for Western medicine for 1,500 years, wrote extensively on the medicinal value of botanical aromatics. The Medica contained detailed information on over 500 plants and 4,740 separate medicinal uses for them, including an entire section on aromatics.

Written records of herbal distillation are found as early as the first century A.D., and around 1000 A.D., the noted Arab physician and naturalist Avicenna described the distillation of rose oil from rose petals, and the medicinal properties of essential oils in his writings. However, it wasn't until 1937, when French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé published Aromatherapie: Les Huiles essentielles, hormones végé tales, that aromatherapie, or aromatherapy, was introduced in Europe as a medical discipline. Gattefossé, who was employed by a French perfumeur, discovered the healing properties of lavender oil quite by accident when he suffered a severe burn while working and used the closest available liquid, lavender oil, to soak it in.
In the late 20th century, French physician Jean Valnet used botanical aromatics as a front line treatment for wounded soldiers in World War II. He wrote about his use of essential oils and their healing and antiseptic properties, in his 1964 book Aromatherapie, traitement des maladies par les essences des plantes, which popularized the use of essential oils for medical and psychiatric treatment throughout France. Later, French biochemist Mauguerite Maury popularized the cosmetic benefits of essential oils, and in 1977 Robert Tisserand wrote the first English language book on the subject, The Art of Aromatherapy, which introduced massage as an adjunct treatment to aromatherapy and sparked its popularity in the United Kingdom.
In aromatherapy, essential oils are carefully selected for their medicinal properties. As essential oils are absorbed into the bloodstream through application to the skin or inhalation, their active components trigger certain pharmalogical effects (e.g., pain relief).

In addition to physical benefits, aromatherapy has strong psychological benefits. The volatility of an oil, or the speed at which it evaporates in open air, is thought to be linked to the specific psychological effect of an oil. As a rule of thumb, oils that evaporate quickly are considered emotionally uplifting, while slowly-evaporating oils are thought to have a calming effect.

What a great idea for the college students in your life. These warmers are perfect for college students because they work great in dorm rooms as most dorms do not allow flames for safety reasons. Holiday Scents 2012

Having had the opportunity to try most of these Scentsy Scents in the new 2012 Fall/Winter catalog, I wanted to provide you with some favorites. If you are trying to find some great candle scents for the upcoming holidays you will find them right here!

An absolute favorite Scentsy scent this fall is Mandarin Moon. Mandarin Moon screams fall with its cinnamon, ginger, and orange. You can not go wrong with this Fall candle scent. Every time you put Mandarin Moon into a warmer you get a sense of comfort and familiarness that I can not quite put my finger on. This should be your go to Scentsy scent these days.

Another favorite is Apple Press. Apple Press is the ultimate Apple candle scent! If you love the scent of Apples you will love this Scentsy scent. It has a hint of pear in it as well, which just enhances the aroma of the apples.

Make Apple Press even better ( if that is possible) by mixing it with Mandarin Moon (1/2 cube of each), and this Scentsy recipe is amazing! An ultimate Christmas candle scent from Scentsy is Christmas Cottage .It is still a bit too early to warm a scent for Christmas. . Christmas Cottage makes me want to drag the Christmas tree out and turn on It's a Wonderful Life and decorate the tree.

5 Tips For Successful Direct Sales Expo Booths

Let's talk a little bit about using expos, trade shows, and fairs to build your direct sales/home party plan business today. First of all, I'll tell you up front that I am not an expert on this topic and I didn't use this model to build either my home party plan business or my multi level marketing business to a great extent. I have done a few trade shows, however, and I picked up some great tips from other direct sellers over the years.
The reason I wanted to write about this topic is because so many of you are using this model to increase your client base and grow your team and there are, in my opinion, some definite dos and don'ts to the whole process. Here are a few tips I think you might find useful:
1. Keep It Simple

Keep your display simple and eye catching. If you overload your space with too much stuff, it's overwhelming to passers by and they may keep walking. What I've noticed when I attend these events is that the booth's that have a crowd of people are generally the ones with virtually no clutter, that compel the passer by to stop and ask more about the product or service.

2. Draw People In

Make sure there's a reason for people to stop by, and more importantly stay, at your booth. People tend to have short attention spans and there is a ton of stimulation at these events. You're basically competing for people's attention. Post a huge question prominently in your booth that compels people to stop and chat. I'll give you an example. When I was an image consultant years ago I did a booth at a women's fair and put the question, "Do You Have A Closet Full Of Clothes And Nothing To Wear?" in huge letters front and center. Every women who passed by wanted to stop and tell me how that described her and her closet. It was a great way to engage my target market in conversation.

3. Stay Front and Center

Never sit or stand behind your booth. I can't tell you how amazed I am every year at our local county fair when I see direct sellers whom I know have paid handsomely for their booths sitting behind messy displays of their products chatting with each other or reading a book, waiting for me to step up and see if I can get their attention to ask them about their product or opportunity. Just FYI, I've never asked and I've rarely seen anyone else do it either.
You invest good money and serious time into a fair, expo, or trade show booth. So work it! If there's a chair behind your booth when you arrive to set up, move it to the booth next to you and once you've gotten everything set up and stored away, don't walk to the back of your booth again until the end of the day. You want to be out front, chatting, connecting, and working with the participants at the show.
4. Be Smart About Your Drawings

Just about every single week on the Fan Page I have someone ask about how to follow up with the hundreds of leads they've gotten the weekend before at a trade show or expo. I can almost guarantee that a huge percentage of those leads aren't quality, interested people. You're not there at that event to collect names. You're there to collect quality leads. There's a difference. I didn't allow just anyone to stop by with their return address stamp, grab a handful of free candy (and while popular, this is not the smartest way to draw people into your booth), and enter my drawing.
I would engage someone in conversation, find out a little about them and their needs and whether or not my products or opportunity might be a good fit for them, and if they were, I offered to enter them into my drawing. That way, you're sure that every lead you put into your drawing is at least mildly interested in learning more about what you have to offer (and not just the chance of getting something for free). I also made notes on those drawing slips so when I did follow up, I could have an intelligent conversation about our booth conversation and experience. You'll meet lots of people during that event and believe me, you'll be happy to have those notes after the fact.
5. Stay Curious in Your Conversations

As you step into conversation with passers by, start by asking, not telling. Yes, I know you're excited about all that you have to share with them and of course, they're curious about it or they wouldn't be stopping by. But if you start out by barfing a bunch of information all over them about how great your product is or how much money they could make with your opportunity, you're getting off on the wrong foot. Instead, start by asking them a question about their life ("So, where are you from?" "Are you a mom?" "What do you do for a living?") so that you can share your information in a manner that's relevant for them. I promise, you'll have much more productive and meaningful conversations with people if you take this approach.
The key when you're doing a booth at one of these events is to remember that you need to find a way to stand out. You're there in a sea of other direct sellers and retailers and you've got to give people a reason to want to stop and learn more about you. Use these tips and get creative about what else you could do to make your booth and yourself stand out, and please post your ideas below. What is stress? What can we do about it?

Stress is the psychological and physical expression of a long-term build-up of pressure. Of course, we will all come across stressful situations, and we are well-equipped to deal with this in a physical and mental way.
When that pressure fails to subside then the survival mode that serves us well in the short term begins to break us down. First your enthusiasm and creativity begin to wane, then you find you are staying more contained, interacting with people less. In its extreme cases the body's immune system begins to tire and regular sickness, headaches and overall wellbeing are compromised.
Here are a few tips on how to cope:
1. Don't bottle up feelings that cause stress.
That burning feeling in the stomach, or the frustrated outbursts that happen when it all gets too much, are signs that you are holding onto feelings that cause stress. The common mistake is that people feel as though they should always be smiling and agreeable in the office, but it can be a damaging assumption. If you don't air your concerns or disagreements (in a constructive way) you will create a pressure build-up that has to be released somehow. It is a much better idea for you to determine what those outlets are rather than a bad mood or external event causing you to overreact.
2. Don't get upset and angry when overloaded. Find someone – a friend or a professional, with whom you can discuss your concerns constructively.
The first point here is that you need to become aware of what causes you to shift from a state of high tension to one of relaxation. You may have a friend or family member that is a good listener, and will allow you to talk through the entire situation. Other people will remain in a state of stress until they problem-solve and make a decision on how to act. If that is you, find a person who is a great problem-solver to help you through. Some people continue to suffer under the pretext of not wanting to 'unload' on those around them. In these cases, professional help may be best.
3. Be aware of anxiety in others. Maybe someone needs your care, your sensitivity or even your help.
Most people struggle with admitting to themselves or others that they are not coping well with a situation. If you see someone who is stressed or anxious it can make a huge difference to their life if you extend a hand of understanding and give them an avenue to talk about it. Sure, you may come across a defensive individual that is aggressive in their refusal of help, but even in this instance your approach can make a difference by making them more aware of how they are being perceived.
4. Learn to share and vent in a constructive manner.
Being stressed doesn't give you the automatic right to bring down the tone of the entire office. Storming around with a head full of thunder because you're under pressure just isn't acceptable – it makes others walk on eggshells. It is a common coping mechanism but it is so unfair on those around you. There are constructive ways of sharing and reducing the pressure – always seek these out if you feel things are getting on top of you.
All around us are people that are willing to help, talk and discuss. We are all social animals and usually quite unaware of just how many people are willing to help us if we give them a chance. Nobody is an island, and distancing yourself emotionally will result in inadvertent outbursts that will disrupt the relationships you are trying not to disrupt by keeping your feelings to yourself.
Stress has a big impact on us at work and in our personal lives – we must find the best ways to manage our own stress so we feel better and we do not damage ourselves further and do not impact those around us. Stress requires making some changes.

Hearty Minestrone Soup

The Good News This satisfying soup from David Bull is an excellent source of fiber.

Ingredients

1 1/4 cup(s) dried white beans d, 8 ounces soaked overnight and draine
3 tablespoon(s) extra-virgin olive oil
2 ounce(s) pancetta, finely diced
2 medium shallots, minced
2 large celery ribs, finely diced
1 medium onion, finely diced
1 large carrot, finely diced
1/2 fennel bulb, cored and diced
4 clove(s) garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon(s) crushed red pepper
2 bay leaves
2 tablespoon(s) tomato paste
1 14-ounce can plum tomatoes, chopped juices reserved
1 quart(s) low-sodium chicken broth
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1 cup(s) baby arugula
1/2 cup(s) flat-leaf parsley leaves
1 tablespoon(s) fresh lemon juice

Directions

1. In a pot, cover the beans with 2 inches of water and bring to a boil. Simmer over low heat until tender, about 2 hours; add water to keep the beans covered. Drain the beans and reserve the cooking liquid.
2. Meanwhile, in another pot, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil. Add the pancetta and cook over moderate heat until crisp, 4 minutes. Add the shallots, celery, onion, carrot and fennel, and cook until softened. Add the garlic, crushed pepper and bay leaves and cook, stirring, until fragrant. Add the tomato paste and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Stir in the tomatoes and broth; bring to a boil. Simmer over low heat for 1 hour. Add the beans and enough cooking liquid to thin out the soup. Discard the bay leaves; season with salt and pepper.
3. In a bowl, toss the arugula and parsley with the lemon juice and remaining 1 tablespoon of oil. Season with salt and pepper. Serve the soup in bowls; top with the salad.

It's a fact that our sense of smell triggers emotional responses. Just yesterday at work someone heated something in the microwave for lunch and I instantly thought of the canned dog food that we feed our dog. When I smell coffee, my mind wanders back to childhood summers spent with my Aunt Nora and Uncle Jim, and their warm kitchen filled with the strong aroma of fresh ground coffee beans and warm toast ready for butter and jam. The smell of fresh-baked banana bread makes me think of grandma, while the subtle bouquet of Heaven Sent perfume has me thinking of my mother.
I use aromatherapy not only at home, but also at work. My office desk has a tart burner and each morning when I arrive, I light a tart to evoke a feeling of wellbeing. Sometimes the scent might be that of warm apple pie. Other times, a slight floral scent lingers in the air. At home, I often burn cinnamon candles in the living room and study, while infused oil sticks of vanilla in the bathrooms lends a calming and pleasant air.
Here are some specific scents that you can use to alter your mood within your home decor, using aromatherapy:

Energy. If you've had a long day, but you've miles to go before you sleep, then use mandarin oil to energize a room. Find a mandarin orange candle, tart, or spray and allow the revitalizing scent to energize you to conquer the next hurdle of the day.
Stress. To relieve stress, use spearmint-scented products to envelope a room. Bedrooms and a home office or study will benefit from the smell of spearmint to help allay stress, as will the scent of eucalyptus.
Sleep. Vanilla and lavender are two of the best scents to make a room conducive to sleep. Place a bamboo diffuser of vanilla infused oil into your bedroom and allow the stresses of the day to melt away as you fall into a restful sleep.
Sensual. If you want to spice things up in the bedroom with your partner, light a candle or tart of jasmine. The heavy scent of jasmine will lift your mood and turn an otherwise boring evening into a memorable one.

Play around with different scents in different rooms, and use several types of vehicles for the scents. Use candles that match the decor of your living room, tart burners in your kitchen and dining room, and bamboo oil diffusers in your bathrooms and bedrooms. Choose containers that match the colors and themes of each room.

Scentsy Basket Parties. What are they? I get this question a lot. In a nut shell they are a great way to share Scentsy with folks who are unable to hold a house party, or live out of town. Most, know about home parties where you invite over some friends and the Scentsy consultant presents the items. The products are there to see, smell, sample and purchase, if they wish.

It all starts with a container of some sort. This could be a tote, a basket, or some small type of carrying case. Then you fill it with Scentsy products. You definitely want to include the scent testers. The mini ones are less expensive to mail and replace, if something happens to them. A few from each category should be fine. Include order forms and catalogs, and don't forget some Join brochures.

If the baskets are hand delivered, pack your basket with other goodies, like scent paks, samples of a Layers product, maybe a plug in, travel tin and room spray. Anything you think that the hostess may want to see. Keep the ones you mail away basic. Catalogs, order forms and join brochures, with some mini testers. It's always a good idea to inventory what you send and make sure you and the hostess each have a copy.
