I am starting a new blog that is completely devoted to photography. It will mostly be explaining how images were made, but also gear reviews, tutorials, etc. It is called Beyond Exif and I am looking forward to it helping improve my images as well as trying to help others with photography.

Jennifer and I got married a week ago. I feel like that is a pretty good excuse for the lack of posting. After the wedding we went up to Zion for a honeymoon. Here are some shots of our hike of the Subway.

Lions and Tigers, but no Bears

We made it over to the Wild Animal Park here in California the other day. We got pretty lucky with how active the animals were. The tigers were jumping on each other and playing. The lions were awake, they had to get up to eat.

The red river hogs had just had babies that were always pushing each other around.

There were also some great flowers around the park

May All of Your Dreams Come True

So I'm a little late and I haven't posted for a while. Sorry. I've been slightly busy trying to finish the semester and get things all set for my upcoming wedding. Before our Easter egg hunt we picked some dandelions and made a wish. Clearly, I can't tell you what my wish was but my advice for you is to go out find a dandelion, shooting star, birthday cake, etc. make a wish and go for it.

Holbrook Canyon

Jennifer and I got up early on Saturday and went up to Holbrook Canyon so I could shoot some early morning pictures. I thought they turned out pretty well. It is always a nice place to go shoot when I'm in Bountiful because I have shot there a lot so I can see how my photography has evolved. I was shooting from the bank with the tripod center column rotated so the camera was over the water.

Instead of Hunger Games...

Instead of being like the Hunger Games fanatics who were probably waiting in line all day, we just enjoyed Spring. After class Jennifer and I went to the park. I experimented with with some lighting options for afternoon portraits so I could get ready for a shoot I'm doing on Saturday. This shot was taken using a reflector to the right of the camera to fill the shadows on the face. The sun was also right of the camera and behind the subject creating the nice hair light.

Post-picture taking we commenced to bask in the superb spring sun for a bit. All that basking worked up quite an appetite, so we made some good Japanese curry for dinner. Jennifer put apples in the curry. Apples in curry, who knew? Certainly not I. In order to help the digestive process and because it was so nice outside it would be a crime to stay inside, we took a walk through the quaint neighborhoods of Provo. All in all way better than any movie.

So I've been asked what's with the mustache? Well, why not grow a mustache? Sure, you might call it the least culturally acceptable facial hair. The truth is when you grow a mustache you are in good company.

Some say why grow a mustache? Why not? Ok it also helps if your fiance likes it.

My first use of the new tripod. The tripod is great, I was a little rushed taking the picture because it started snowing pretty hard, but the snow did make the light from the lamps pretty cool.

The Dream is Still Alive

First of all check out my cool new tripod.

It is super solid and has a sweet rotating center column. Oh and it's made in Italy (automatic style bonus).

In other news I got a pretty exciting phone call yesterday. I was in the math lab, and I got a phone call from Waterloo, WI. For those of you that don't know anything about Waterloo it's where Trek headquarters are. No job offer but I do have another interview on Friday.

From the 12th floor of the SWKT at BYU

I spent some of Friday night helping Jennifer put together some kits for brain awareness week. That may sound very boring, but I got to cut a sheep brain in half, so actually pretty cool. Well it was cool except the smell of formaldehyde, that part was actually pretty awful. I now have a greater appreciation for my brain.

I've decided to sell my GoPro. I just don't get enough use out of it. The times that I have used it have been pretty cool. Maybe I'm not extreme enough. So here is it is

Experimenting With Water

I was reading about water droplet pictures on Digital Photography School today and thought I would try it out. Not the best but I didn't have a lot of time. I'll try again later.

South Fork

I got off to an early start this morning. Since I've kicked mono in the nucleosis, I've been wanting to get out and shoot at dawn. There is a park up South Fork that I wanted to shoot at. Water is one of my favorite things to shoot, especially in winter when you get these cool ice formations. Getting a polarizing filter really helps around water. It will minimize the reflections off the water and make the color stand out more. The North Face saved me this morning. If I didn't have those waterproof boots all that creek hopping would've have gotten me cold and wet.

After I got all the shots I wanted, well there were a few more I wanted but they would be too dangerous to get to, I packed up my gear. When I got back to the car my tripod wouldn't collapse because it had ice all over it. Definitely a great morning to shoot.

Beauty and Belief

Jennifer and I went to see the exhibit Beauty and Belief tonight at the BYU Museum of Art. The exhibit showcases Islamic art. As you turned a corner this sculpture was lit beautifully and was framed by two arches as you looked down the gallery toward it. The exhibit is quite impressive. One of the most impressive things that was featured in much of the art was how intricate the designs were. Take the bronze sculpture in the picture above, from afar it was beautiful, but as you moved closer you saw intricate designs in it. Some of the pieces were amazingly detailed.

One of the other things that struck me was how their faith was put into their lives. Messages from the Qur'an were inscribed in shields and helmets for battle. Throughout the exhibit there were Qu'rans on display, the intricate designs that were put on each page showed that they wanted the pages to be worthy of the word of God.

The exhibit was fascinating and it gave me a chance to reflect on my own faith.

Getting Closer

I was wanting to get some close up shots today. I was lucky enough to find this feather. Simplicity is almost always a good way to go in composition, so I put in on the table and shot away.

Its been a pretty big week. The blog just passed 10,000 views and I interviewed for my dream summer job. So I figure it's time to celebrate. I have also been looking to shoot more pictures with people for this whole Project 365. It Just Might Happen

Yeah I know not a great picture, but it has some news behind it.

Today I received an email that I will have an interview with Trek in the next week for a summer internship. I don't know how it will work out. We will just have to see if I get an offer and if it will be feasible to move to Wisconsin. I've thought about designing bikes for years and now I might just have the opportunity to do the kind of work I've thought about for years.

Golden Hour

So great day, I got my favorite seat in the testing center. My seat is up in the music room (it's like having a soundtrack for your test taking experience), front row so you have lots of legroom and next to the window so when you get stuck you can gaze longingly outside. As I was working away at my math test I looked outside and saw the beautiful Mt. Timpanogos. Its peak was shrouded in dark storm clouds, but the rest of the snowy mountain was bathed in a beautiful gold light. I wanted so badly to take a picture of it but alas I was taking a test. Luckily I came out of the testing center, the tv with the scores told me how awesome I am and there was still great light on the mountains.
