"It wasn't about the money. It was about the job," Holmgren said by telephone from his Arizona home Sunday. "It was about what I wanted to do with the last years of my football life and [the Hawks' offer] wasn't what I wanted to do."

That basically sums it all.

Oh yeah, Mike Holmgren is now President and "Czar" of the Cleveland Browns.

In the Seahawks' offer, Holmgren would have to answer to the whole Vulcan Sports and Entertainment, including current CEO Tod Leiweke. The Browns offered ultimate authority and the Seahawks did not, they gave him crap. The Seahawks wanted him "to jump" and "ask how high"...

Vulcan wanted to change the team, but did not want to change the infrastructure of the team (aka themselves). That's half-ass. The statement given by the team before Sunday's game (regarding Holmgren's decision) against the Tampa Bay Bucs was even more half-ass. Don't get me started about the game itself. They could have signed Holmgren, right off the bat, when Tim Ruskell was canned. They waited too long.

Holmgren takes you guys to the Super Bowl and then you guys low-ball his ass in return. Our Xmas present was not ever going to come. It wasn't going to happen, especially with Paul Allen & Vulcan. And therefore the bitterness and spurn feels even worse than the Steelers loss in Super Bowl XL, or even yesterday's P.O.S. game.

Simply unacceptable.

Sincerely,
"I'll take your POS for my POS..."

"Uhhhh...deal!"

Another Christmas present has arrived in the form of flea-market swap, if you really think about it.

The M's swapped pitcher Carlos Silva for Chicago Cubs outfielder Milton Bradley. In internet-speak, my first reaction was ROFL, sans the 'ROF' part...

Then I sat down and thought about it some more. We just replaced an ineffective and injury-prone pitcher with a productive hitter who could, at any minute, blow up his top.

What? You say MB is a cancer? I don't care...

This is a STEAL! MAJOR WIN!

Uhhh...I mean EPIC WIN!

SCS will have like 315,236,432 more things to talk about thanks to MB and only MB.

Oh yeah, since baseball is also a profitable business, the Mariners also just saved themselves a cool $2 million dollars for 2010.

Maybe Silva will start in Chicagoland because there was no way he was going to start here. He was in a position to receive Miguel Batista's old role: mop-up long relief, by default.

On the other hand, Bradley lovers say that he will stay straight because Grandpa Griffey & Wak will set him in line...

Yeah right...

P.S. Does Silva's pic look like a mug shot? MB would smile for a mug shot but that's a completely different story.

Yesterday's announcement of the three-team trade (now turned four-team) has to be one of the most unforgettable MLB trade in years. Two teams sends Cy Young winners to different teams and involves Future Stars prospects. We will see how this deal pans out now but for the immediate future, Phillies wins, M's steal, and Blue Jays fans should be pissed, (I like Toronto, T-dots...don't hate on the truth of this deal), and A's fan don't give a F....because they swapped minor leaguers.

Phils get...
RHP Roy Halladay (from Toronto)
*RHP Phillippe Aumont (from Seattle)
*OF Tyson Gillies (from Seattle)

Some exciting news for today, if you are a Mariners or Phillies fan. The Seattle Mariners are close to getting Cliff Lee from the Philadelphia Phillies in a three-team trade. Sources says the Mariners are sending their top pitching prospect Phillippe Aumont to the Phillies and the Blue Jays will send their Cy Young pitcher Roy Halladay to the Phillies. Halladay has a no-trade clause and it is understood he did not want to be traded to Seattle.

The Phils get a better pitcher in Halladay (2009 stats-wise). The Mariners will have a deadly 1-2 starting pitchers with Felix Hernandez and Cliff Lee. The Blue Jays get two pitching prospects, but let's be honest, they're not the main point of the story here.

There are other players that will be included since the trade has not been considered an official deal as of 8 PST.

John Lackey would be = moot for M's after this deal. Now if Lee would sign a long-term deal with us.

---

Update 8:25 PST:

It seems like the reports have changed and Aumont will most likely go to the Phillies while the Blue Jays will get nothing from the M's.
Head coach Jim Mora was asked by the media again for the second week in a row and he replied that it would depend what personnel group [the team] is in.

All the coach is willing to tell the media is Forsett will get more opportunities which may have been last week but unfortunately he suffered an quadriceps injury during practice, which limited his opportunities to five carries during the 49ers game.

Justin Forsett and Julius Jones will most likely split carries this weekend.

If you have either player on your fantasy football team, I would not start any of them...well maybe flex.

---

Back to Rookie Deon Butler's fresh diary entry for today.

Thought I liked to share a little excerpt with Deon & TJ talking about 'separation'...

"Yeah, I've heard that (San Francisco coach) Mike Singletary was talking about me. He thought I pushed off. (Looks over at T.J. Houshmandzadeh) See, T.J., I told you, man!"

Houshmandzadeh chimes in: "Singletary knows he ain't push off! It's called separation."

Butler: "It's that good technique, man. I'm learning from guys like T.J. We call it stacking people. You stack a guy. You know, you get even with him and then run a straight line. Some cornerbacks want to push you to the sideline, and you run straight and cut them off. The way Matt (Hasselbeck) threw the ball, I saw it and he never saw it, so when I faded to the ball, maybe to him it was like, 'Aww, how'd he get so much separation?' I was running a straight line and just faded to it, and that's what creates the separation. That's part of being a deep threat or even a good wide receiver, period. You've got to learn how to create separation."

To make this short and sweet: Safeco Field is a place where right-handed power hitters come to die.
You've seen what happen to Sexson and Beltre!
As much as Mariners fan love Jason Bay, he will become a Sexson within TWO years or less playing at the Safe.

Sincerely,

Seattle City Sports

---

Okay, with more details...

In 2003, which was Ritchie Sexson's last season playing all 162 games with the Milwaukee Brewers, he hit .272/45/124. The following season in 2004, he had an injury-plaque season with only 23 game appeared.

Then came the 4 years $50 million contract from Bill Bavasi.

The first season (2005) he did alright, .263/39/121, and the following year (2006) his power numbers declined and everyone knows what happened in 2007.

He batted .205 and the next season he was released....

---

In 2003, Adrian Beltre stats were .240/23/80
In 2004, Adrian Beltre stats were .334/48/121 in his contract year.
Either he was hungry for the potential fat paycheck or he took steroids *blinks eyes*.

At the end of the 2004 season, Seattle quickly swooped him up for 5 years and $64 million. In the five years since, he has been a sub 20 HR hitter and never reached 100 RBIs and is not the same player the front office envisioned hitting .300 and 40+ HRs with 100+ RBIs on a yearly bases.

The newest name coming up during baseball winter meeting is Mike Cameron, the man who replaced Ken Griffey Jr. in center field back in 2000.

Could we see Hammerin' Cameron back in Seattle Blue?

A reunion with the Mariners would make some sense, Cameron would contribute and be another addition to one of the best outfield defenses in the majors.

Mike would give the team a good clubhouse guy and a great presence in the greater-Seattle community, a .250 batting average, a .340 on base percentage and of course...a bunch of strikeouts.

Last year he averaged .250 avg, .342 obp%, and a .452 slg% with 24 HRs and 70 RBIs.

The most ideal situation for Mike would be moving from center to left field. He has publicly said he would not mind doing so.

"Mike loved playing in Seattle,'' says Mike Cameron's agent, Mike Nicotera. "He loved the city, and felt like he grew up there as a player. It's where he became the guy he is now. Seattle is a very special place to him, whether it's baseball memories, family memories, or a combination of the two.''

Mariners offer Figgins a four-year $36 million deal, and the Los Angeles Angels have counter with a three-year deal. Sources say it's looking "very favorable" for Figgins to sign the deal since his camp wants to get things done quickly.

SCS predicts Adrian Beltre will definitely decline arbitration and sign somewhere else with another team. So long Adrian! We will miss your glove and...that's pretty much it.

Acquiring Figgins would potentially brings the Mariners walks and a top-5 OBS of .395. SCS assumes Figgins would bat second behind lead-off man Ichiro. He also brings versatility as fantasy baseball players know, he also is capable of playing in the outfield and second base, giving the team flexibility to rotate their LF spot.

Figgins is a Type A free agent, meaning the Mariners would have to give up their 18th pick in the draft for taking him away from the Angels.

Mariners are also looking to obtain left fielder Jason Bay from the Boston Red Sox.

It is always good to steal talent from division rivals...
The ball is in his glove right now. Beltre is a Type B free agent, which means the team would receive a compensatory draft pick from another team if Beltre declines the arbitration offer and signs somewhere else.

Beltre is seeking a multi-year offer and has offers from numerous teams wanting his services, making the M's offer less attractive.

If "Yo Adrian" does decided to accept the offer, the Mariners would have one of the games best defensive 3B for another year and he would be paid around 12 million dollars. The team would also have more time to negotiate a deal with Beltre.

On the other hand, pitcher Erik Bedard is not receiving arbitration because he is coming off of shoulder surgery and is expected not to start the 2010 baseball season. Other MLB teams would tend to give him a incentive-laden contracts. Bedard's position would suggest to come back to the Mariners for another year.

If the Mariners gave arbitration to Bedard, he would make at least $8 millions dollars. It is believed the Mariners are not willing to give Bedard a raise or match last year's salary (due to arbitration).

A little classroom lesson about arbitration: (from wiki)

If a player is drafted and is offered a contract by his drafting team (or any team he is traded to) each year, he may not become a free agent until he has been on a major league 25-man roster or disabled list for at least six years. Otherwise, any player without a contract may become a free agent and sign with any team.

A player is eligible for salary arbitration if he:

is ineligible for free agency

is without a contract

cannot agree with his current team on a new contract

has been on a major league roster or disabled list for at least three years

Hawks fan rejoice!

SCS would like to compare the two GMs: former-GM Mike Holmgren, and current GM Tim Ruskell drafting and free agent signings.

Good Holmgren:
Shawn "Power of Prayer" Alexander
Steve Hutchinson
Darryl Jackson
Ken Lucas
Robbie Tobeck

Bad Holmgren:
Koren Robinson
Jerramy Stevens
Lamar King
Brock Huard

Good Ruskell:
Lofa Tatupu
Leroy Hill
Leonard Weaver
John Carlson
Justin Forsett
David Hawthorne

Bad Ruskell:
Kelly Jennings
Josh Wilson
Lawrence Jackson
Chris Spencer
David Greene
Steve Hutchinson transition tagging
Brian Russell
Edgerrin James
TJ Duckett

So who was the worst Seahawks GM in the 2000s?

The Sounders FC's first OG has become an OG...for another team.

Today Sebastien Le Toux was selected in the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft for the Philadelphia Union (the league's 16th team).

Seba will officially wear this uniform...

Not that SCS supports the kit or anything...

Interesting Note: Sounders FC's defender James Riley was not selected (their lost). No other Sounders FC unprotected players were also selected.

Here are some kind words of farewell from Sigi:

"With expansion comes the unfortunate consequence that you're likely going to lose someone," said Sigi Schmid. "Seba is a quality player, and it's understandable that Philadelphia valued his abilities and brought him aboard. "We're sad to see him go," added Schmid, "but we wish him the best with this opportunity in Philadelphia."

Here is the complete list of who the Union selected:
Philadelphia Union 2009 Expansion Draft Selections
(listed in alphabetical order)

Player (Pos.) Former Club
Jordan Harvey (D) Colorado Rapids
Andrew Jacobsen (M) D.C. United
Brad Knighton (G) New England Revolution
Sebastien Le Toux (F) Seattle Sounders FC
Stefani Miglioranzi (M) LA Galaxy
Alejandro Moreno (F) Columbus Crew
Dave Myrie (D) Chicago Fire
Shea Salinas (M) San Jose Earthquakes
Shavar Thomas (D) Chivas USA
Nick Zimmerman (M) New York Red Bulls

It is a bittersweet day, since Seba is a SCS fan-favorite. Even though he did squat-jack during the MLS regular season but tore up second stringers during the US Open Cup tournament. The results did not translate directly to the field. There was just something about him that most soccer/football fans liked about him. I believe it was his never ending motor and work-rate.

SCS remembers fondly of "The French Connection" play during the Open Cup Final.

Le Toux to Levesque for Le Goal!

Here is Le Toux giving away his shoes after a game.

SCS would like to say that Seattle will miss you, and best of luck in Philly! Your squad is going down when we play in 2010 MLS opener at Qwest this coming new year!

In other Sounders FC news today, they have waived midfielder Michael Fucito and defenders Evan Brown and Lamar Neagle. Three rookies who didn't get playing time. Hopefully they will have job somewhere else, or else, RL.

P.S. SCS will be on Thanksgiving vacation and won't be back on until the following Monday.
If I ever wakes up from his induced food coma...
See you all on the flip side and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

There is a really good in-depth article/blog posted today about the possibility of 2B Jose Lopez getting shipped or dropped from Geoff Baker from the Seattle Times.

The Quick Version:
- Lopez is "a lousy on-base guy" ~.300 OBP
- Mediocre/Bad fielder
- Matt Tuiasosopo & Bill Hall could take over 2B

The University of Washington men's basketball team have received a verbal commitment from Turkish star Enes Kanter as of yesterday. The 17 year old has flown under scouts' radar and may be considered one of the best big men in the Class of 2010.

Kanter is a 6-foot-10, 240-pound center from Stoneridge Prep School in Simi Valley, Calif. He is one of seven centers in the country that received five out of five stars by Scout.com. He chose Washington over Indiana, USC, UCLA, and UNLV.

He was born in Zurich, Switzerland and has Turkish citizenship. Last autumn he made his pro debut in the Turkish Basketball League and later played in the Euroleague (which is considered equivalent to the NCAA).

Kanter seems like the real deal. He was named the MVP of the 2009 U18 Euro Championship in France. He averaged 18.6 ppg and 16.4 rebs. Look at them biceps!

"Enes is just a very dominant big man," his prep school coach Derryck Thornton said. "We just played four games out in Vegas and he probably averaged 34, 35 [points] and about 19, 20 rebounds. He's amazing. He shoots the three. He's got NBA range. He's strong. He will finish around the rim and just knows how to play."

Tornton said that Kanter had spurned a multi-million dollar offers with Greek giant Olympiacos and a pro team in Turkey to attend school in America.

SCS can't wait to see what Enes Kanter can do with a Huskies uniform on. I currently have a wait-and-see approach, but I cannot help have visions of Vladimir Stepania.

Dear God, please don't let Enes Kanter turn into Vladimir Stepania!

Alonso, Osvaldo
Evans, Brad
Gonzalez, Leo
Hurtado, Jhon Kennedy
Jaqua, Nate
Marshall, Tyrone
Zakuani, Steve

That means the Philadelphia Union cannot select these guys for their team.

According to sources, former Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren is interested in working for the Browns. Interviewed on Seattle sports radio, he had indicated that he would accept a chance to rebuild the struggling Browns who yesterday were beat at home by the also struggling Detroit Lions (in a shootout).

Last year, Hall of Famer Jim Brown said the Brown's GM has met "one of the great football minds in this country," appearing to hint at the coach without a job, Holmgren.

It would interesting to see how the development of this news will occur throughout the rest of the season, with the Browns and the Seahawks continuing to suck.

Hawks' fans have been calling for Hawks GM Tim Ruskell's head (which began with the transitional tagging of left guard Steve Hutchinson in 2006) and ESPN's John Clayton has recently reported Mike Holmgren could be the Seahawks' next general manager.

This speaks for itself...

Like a couple of seasons ago, with Zach Randolph...

and last season

Overall, Nate's shot wasn't that bad, since the red light and horn already went off. Maybe I'm not getting it?

On the other hand, what Zach did was pretty funny. He ain't no Antoine Walker!

Mariners first round pick Dustin Ackley who played both first base and outfield (@ North Carolina) will begin working out at second base for the upcoming season in the minors and if everything goes right then it will be a permanent move.

General manager Jack Zduriencik is quoted to say this is an experimental process and they usually let newly drafted players play multiple positions in order to give the ball club some flexibility going forward into the future.

Scouts have frequently compared Ackley to Phillies' Chase Utley, an all-natural second baseman. Rumors say that Zduriencik will either attempt to adjust current Mariners second baseman Jose Lopez to either 1B or 3B or trade him altogether. Trade winds also reveal Tigers' OF Curtis Granderson could be arriving in Seattle in the possible future.

To be quite honest, all that matters for me is that Ackley hit the ball hard and not into an fielder's glove.

During the offseason, TJ Houshmandzadeh (aka, Long Name) visited two teams, the Seahawks and the Vikings. At the end of the day, he decided to sign with the Seahawks because Coach Jim Mora stole his watch and kept it as collateral (half-truth). He was quoted to say that he chose the Hawks over the Vikings (at the time) because he saw Seattle had a more stable quarterback situation.

aka, Matt Hasselbeck is better than Tavaris Jackson.

And then Brett Favre signs a couple of weeks later...and we go into the present.

SCS: ANY REGRETS, TJ?

"I don't know," Long Name said. "It's hard to say, 'What if, what if?' So you make the decision at the time that was best."

"I tried to look at everything and I talked to a lot of people and the process, different coaches throughout the NFL, and got advice what they thought was best for me. People that I really trust. And I would say it was split even with him not there and so I just had to do what I thought was best."

My man did not seem happy with his stay in Seattle so far. With the 3-6 record, the terrible offensive line, mounting injuries, concussions (as of last week). Let's look over at Minnesota: All Day Adrian Peterson, 8-1 record and Favre claims its the best team he had ever played with (insert here: Packer die-heart fans hiss with anger).

Long Name had also said that right now the situation does not look good BUT it is "very early in the process" and he feels he play for more years since he did not play much early in his NFL career. Basically...he's saying, he ain't no Larry Johnson! (burnnnn)

Speaking of Larry Johnson (Bengals Signing), I quickly snatched him off of the FA list in my FFB League today.

I have no shame...
So do what I always do, Craigslist (I searched it for you)!

Are Seattlites going to watch the match wearing Sounders' Rave Green? I'm willing to beat quarters the Sounders Faithful are willing to root for RSL. I have this gut feeling we do not like LAG very much...

Even though we are out of the playoffs, I encourage everyone who went to Sounders games to attend the MLS Cup and REPRESENT!

If you looked at Felix Hernandez's stats today, they would scream for and make a strong candidate to push for Cy Young. Any year, except for this year. Kansas City Royals Zach Greinke wins that recognition this time around.

STATS
Greinke: 16-8 record & 2.16 ERA & 242 SOs
King Felix: 19-5 record & 2.49 ERA & 217 SOs

Hernandez's ERA is lower than the previous EIGHT Cy Young winners, but Greinke was much lower.

In a surprising outcome, Greinke received 25 1st place votes, while Felix received ONLY 2 1st place votes. Out of the total votes, the Kansas City ace ran away from his competitor by 54 votes.

At the end of the day, Greinke started the MLB season with a fast start, by winning his first 6 decisions. By the fourth of June he was 8-1. Felix Hernandez had pitched into mediocre results before being called out by Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu for his inconsistent preparation after a loss to the Angels in May.
What seemed like overnight, King Felix turned things around and was lights-out in the final four months of the season.

The Royals went 65-97 last season, and they have the worst winning percentage of an AL team with a Cy Young winner.
